The Bureau of Mines has monitored structural responses to airblast overpressure produced by munitions disposal at the McAlester Army Ammunition Plant. The Purpose of this study was to determine if the blasting caused vibrations, airblasts or structural responses that could possibly be responsible for cracking or other damage observed in nearby residences. Monitoring took place during a 3-month period at 10 selected residences surrounding the plant. By the end of the monitoring period, nearly 2300 blast-related events had been recorded.

The scope of this paper is to examine the growth of safety in an individual and offer new goals in that development. The paper will examine the individual's natural growth and show how it parallels the individual in a safety environment. An individual's new goals for safety include more than the standard accident-free conditions. The new goal strives for a safer working environment where unsafe acts are eliminated through independent knowledge and an individual's growth of interdependency in safety related areas of concern. It will explain how this goal cannot be reached unless driven from the top down in an organization but empowered from the bottom up. Various reference or support organizations will be covered. These organizations deal with safety in mining and explosive use of manufacturing. Other support organizations exist but since this paper is "Back to Basics" only a few major groups will be covered.

Minimum safe distance (MSD) calculations are used widely in military applications to determine safe standoff distances for breaching personnel. Accurate safe distances and an understanding of blast wave propagation are critical to preventing traumatic brain injury. These calculations are often based on spherical charges in open air. However, applications including explosive breaching use planar charges rather than spherical. Previous studies analyzed the shock propagation of a square planar charge of sheet explosive and concluded the anisotropic pattern conflicted with the Kingery Bulmash (KB) and MSD spherical models. It has been determined that these predictions do not adequately predict the realistic pressures in all directions and the trend has shown to be consistent across multiple charge geometries. In this series of experiments, pressures were collected from reference spheres and rectangular geometries of detonating cord and sheet explosive commonly used in breaching and improvised demolition for this comparison. This common configuration showed pressure differences at varying angles to the charge with the highest pressures measured at the 90° position perpendicular to the “door” to be breached. Lower pressures were found at the 0° and 15° positions where the breachers would normally be standing. The reflected shock from a surface such as a door was incorporated in a semi-confined situation and added to the shock observed by the breachers. Urban environments include many surrounding structures for these reflections to occur and further testing is necessary in such an environment to determine the full-scale impact. These findings may be useful to develop improved MSD calculations for breaching applications based on charge geometry, orientation to the blast, and nearby structures.

With the continuing rise in the cost of petroleum products and the focus on the increasing use of renewable resources, a readily available, economical replacement for fuel oil in ANFO is the logical next step, and has finally come to realization. This “green” fuel is plentiful, derived from renewable resources, more cost effective and reduces CO emissions. It also increases product density and bulk strength performance. As this unique fuel replaces some of the mass of ammonium nitrate prill, increased savings will be realized proportionally with the increasing cost of ammonium nitrate. Minimal changes are necessary, as this renewable fuel is designed for use and handling with current, commonly used ANFO blending and loading equipment. This proven technology is now in use by commercial operations in the Southwest, providing significant economic benefit with reduced cost per hundred weight of ANFO consumed.

Placer Dome, US operates the Bald Mountain Mine. The Bald Mountain Mine is a surface operation located in remote northwestern White Pine County in east-central Nevada, approximately midway between Elko and Ely. The mine is in the Newark Valley along the southwestern flank of Bald Mountain a part of the Ruby Mountain range, at an approximate elevation of 7,500 ft (2,286 m). The geology at the Bald Mountain Mine is highly altered, both mineralogically, and structurally. Highwall stability and control have long been an issue at the operation, due largely to the varying geologic conditions. In some blasts as many as seven distinct geologic unconformities exist. These unconformities affect both final high wall integrities, as well as blast fragmentation characteristics. A 60 million ton (54.5 million tonnes) layback expansion of the existing “Top Pit” as well as development of a new satellite pit, “Sage Flats”, is being undertaken. Design final highwall pit slopes have been steepened from the traditional 47º to 55º in order to reduce overall ore-to-waste ratios, thereby improving economic viability for the expansion over the 4.5 year life of the project. With the increased usage of electronic detonators throughout the mining industry, mine operations staff, as well as representatives from the mines explosive supplier felt that an evaluation program incorporating electronic detonators would be warranted. The areas of focus for this evaluation would be resultant highwall pre-split integrities, peak particle velocity measurements (both near field and far field), frequency measurements, loader productivity, and visual interpretation of the results. The mine incorporates 25 ft (7.6 m) benches and uses separate trim blasts in conjunction with production blasts in order to reduce blast effects along final highwalls. Hole diameters in production blasts are 7? ” (200 mm). Typical production blast patterns are 18 ft x 18 ft (5.5 m x 5.5 m), drilled in a square pattern configuration. Shot sizes vary greatly, ranging from 200 holes to as many as 800. Bulk low percentage ANFO/emulsion blends are utilized as the redominant blasting agent. The mechanism of crack formation in two target rocks (Kuru granite and Flamboro Limestone) is studied experimentally by simulating the impact action of a percussive drilling bit. Rock samples are dynamically loaded using a custom made impacting bit (8 mm, 12 mm and 15 mm diameter bits). The target rocks are impacted at velocities 8, 10, and 12 m/s. The resulting crack patterns are visualized by three techniques, Dye penetration, CAT scans and Optical scans. Mapping of the crack patterns is manually done with Photoshop. For 3D damage visualization, the crack patterns are mapped in two planes (impact surface and longitudinal sections). The three techniques are compared to determine an optimum technique for better damage visualization. The evolution of crack pattern with impact velocity and bit diameter is discussed.

In contrast to global trends, African, especially South African, surface mining operations have shown a significant rate of adoption of Electronic Detonators (ED’s) over the last few years. Proven benefits of converting to ED’s from pyrotechnic initiation systems have aided this market conversion. These benefits are experienced throughout the mining operation. Benchmarking exercises, prior to the introduction of ED’s, form part of the conversion process and allow for quantifying improvements. Extensive work has been done on quantifying the benefits of converting to ED’s and have shown that results can be reproducible. Improvements have been experienced in many applications and include environmental impact control, improved mining efficiencies, increased cast benefit and improved size distribution. These step changes in blasting results, in conjunction with the adoption of ED technology have aided the rapid conversion of the African surface market.

The use of water stemming with small explosive charges has been successfully developed at the University of Missouri-Rolla. Further study has been started to explore additional applications and uses for water stemming. Work has been focused in the areas of rock excavation and perimeter blasting techniques. This ongoing work is being conducted internally as graduate and undergraduate level research. A paper describing the general technique for use with boulder fragmentation was published in last year’s proceedings. The excavation work took place in the form of both small bench and trench shots while pre-split and trim shots comprised the perimeter-blasting portion. The excavation work was located in both the Roubidoux sandstone formation and the Jefferson City dolomite formation. Hole diameters ranged in size from 1.5” to 3” diameter and powder factors ranged from l/l 0 to l/3 of the conventional charge weight. The water was used to both couple the explosive charge with the surrounding borehole, as well as stemming. No other stemming material or products were used. The method of using water stemming in perimeter blasting was found to work well. However, when used for excavation purposes, adequate rock movement was not obtained. The rock was often split, but not fragmented. The airblast was surprisingly low, but the ground vibrations were excessive. This is not the case with trim shots, and therefore this method appears ideal for splitting purposes, especially in areas where people do not like to stem the tops of the holes, and where airblast and vibrations are of concern. Water coupling dramatically increases splitting and fracturing. However, fragmentation is not only fracturing but also the movement and swelling of the material. As the charge weights are reduced with this method, sufficient gas volume is not created to cause this necessary movement and swell, which is critical in rock excavation. This explains why its successful application was limited to perimeter blasting applications.

Description of Project: Tamar Group’s civil division was awarded a contract to implode the Sun Hotel, an abandoned 14-story building located along Bat Yam’s coastline, roughly two kilometers south of Tel Aviv, Israel. On Nov. 6, 2012, Tamar Group’s experts positioned explosives in strategic locations of the building, targeting its central pillars, which then caused the building to collapse within seconds. Tamar Group used a relatively small amount of explosives in order to generate a well-controlled blast. This is the largest scale demolition carried out in Israel to date.

Generally, the drilling and blasting operation are managed independently to the processing plant outcomes. Therefore, the technical segmentation to determinate the ore drill and blast designs do not include processing plant rock properties such as Bond Work Index, Axb, Drop Weight Index or other. This work describes the case study of a copper mine in Peru, which, together with its strategic partner ORICA, have implemented projects focused on optimizing mine fragmentation. The year 2021, mine operation according to its mine plan would have a significantly increased SAG mill hardness, which would impact directly on copper concentrated production. An integrated strategy from mine to plant has become necessary to maintain the production levels.

The use of angled shot holes can be extremely effective in blasting faces that either have a great deal of toe burden or where it is difficult to give a drill access to a face due to backbreak and face erosion. However many quarry operators are wary of using angled holes because of the perceived possibility of increased flyrock and uncertainty of the driller's abilities to drill at the designed angle.

Over the past two years a research project has been performed on reactive and hot ground. A key finding is that host materials including carbonates and coal are inhibitors to the reaction of sulphide and nitrates. The mechanism of this inhibition is pH buffering and isolating the surface of sulphide from reactants. It has been identified that acidity is a key driver of the reaction with a pH of 2 required for a reactivity event. A series of decomposition experiments confirmed that reactive and hot ground are essentially the same phenomenon with the heating produced either by the reaction of sulphide with nitrates or an external heat source. The results indicate that the key driver of detonation in reactive ground is energy and heat released from the acid induced reaction of sulphide and nitrate with no indications of sulphide being a catalyst or contributor to detonation apart from being a heat source. There must be sufficient sulphide and thermal insulation to provide and retain enough heat for detonation to occur. A pathway to detonation is postulated whereby the heat travels upwards and results in evaporation of water in the explosive. When the temperature reaches approximately 200°C (400°F) the ammonium nitrate starts to decompose, decreasing the mass of the reacting species. The material in the top layers has reduced density and specific heat hence the temperature of the top region rapidly increases up to >1000°C (1800°F) and may initiate detonation. Field tests on loaded blast holes support this proposed mechanism. Case studies are presented whereby the research findings are used to provide an analysis of historical reactive ground events.
