Minerals processing organisations will be more and more under intense competitive pressure. Major changes are being experienced with intense respect to resources, processes, production strategies and markets. As result of international competition, only the most productive and cost-effective operations will survive. That is why operators in the minerals industry have always aimed to obtain better performance from their processes along the mineral extraction cycle starting from exploration up to the smelting step if any. A principal ingredient and perhaps the most important one in the process of evolution toward improved productivity is the achievement and implementation of an error-free production synonym of an ignorance-free operation. This is, at the same time, a guarantee for quality, a minimising factor for waste materials production, handling and disposal, and a maximising factor for labour utilisation. The notion of ?error or ignorance-free? -usually identified as a ?made in Japan? manufacturing mythology, will sound, at first impression, like a pious ideal, to be striven for but impossible to attain. Nevertheless, the introduction of measurement and detection technology in the minerals industry along the last century should benefit from the today?s sensors and control systems that explosively expanded beyond their traditional production base into far-ranging commercial ventures. The fastness and spread of those technologies will play an important role in the survival of innovative plants. Their role in information assimilation, and control of operations to maintain an error-free production environment, will help many plants to stay effective on their competitive course. In this paper the feasibility of the zero process ignorance concept as applied to the comminution circuits will be discussed and the challenge behind this ambitious move toward improved productivity will be outlined. Examples of pre-competitive R&D projects started at COREM in order to fulfil this prerogative will be presented.

The conventional jarosite precipitation process with neutralization by zinc calcine is widely utilized in the zinc industry. However, it has a significant drawback of causing losses of valuable metals like zinc, lead and silver to the jarosite. This comes mainly from the content of these metals in the calcine used for neutralization. As the zinc plants today want to maximize metal recoveries and minimize the amount of residues, this matter has become more and more relevant for zinc producers. Outotec developed and patented in early 2000 an improved version of the jarosite precipitation process in which the need for neutralization can be minimized, thus the metal losses to the jarosite also can be minimized. At the same time, the iron content of the jarosite increases and the amount of produced jarosite is smaller. The main feature of this process is to start the precipitation from ferrous iron after having reduced all the iron by zinc concentrate in a separate step before jarosite precipitation. Iron is then oxidised back to the ferric form simultaneously with jarosite precipitation. By this method, the formation of sulphuric acid is only half that compared to the conventional method and the need for calcine for neutralization can be avoided. High mixing and oxygen dispersion capability are needed in this jarosite precipitation process. Such capabilities are found in the Outotec OKTOP® reactor series. High performance reactors are not only needed to generate high quality precipitates, but also to maximize oxygen utilization; i.e., to minimize operation costs. LEAD poisoning is perhaps the oldest and, until recent years, the most misunderstood of all industrial diseases. Hippocrates appears to have recognized a relationship in the colic experienced by a patient who worked with metals, and the ancient literature is filled with references to the colics and 'dry bellyaches'. The colic and other sequalæ following drinking of lead-bearing waters and, particularly, wines has excited possibly more comment in the older medical literature than any other ætological factor. It was not until1656, when Stockhusen definitely connected the colic of the workmen with the fumes given off in the process, that the true danger to those working with lead was recognized. Unfortunately, something over 200 years elapsed before industry took any note of Stockhusen's discovery; it remained for Legge and Goodly and investigators of the early 1900's to forcibly educate their profession and industry to the manner in which lead gained entrance to the body. The work of Legge and Goodly was published in 1912 and the clearness with which these investigators presented the scientific data which they had accumulated will mark this volume as perhaps the first and most important contribution to our modern knowledge of the subject. It also ushered in a period when, in the short space of thirty years, lead poisoning has been reduced from one of the most baffiing and widespread o industrial diseases to one which can be anticipated and controlled. The next great contribution came in 1926 with the publication of the work of the Harvard group. Here, for the first time, was the physiological behaviour of lead laid bare, and it is to the discoveries of these authors that we owe our modern treatment of lead poisoning.

"The electrodissolution of nickel pellets with different controlled electrical variables was investigated in an effort to mitigate plating residue in Watts bath based electroplating cells. During galvanostatic dissolution at 0.4 A dm-2, the anode potential was seen to oscillate between passive and pitting potentials. In-situ microscopy and ex-situ characterization has shown that lacy-pit formation and large, partially perforated, pit covers form during the potential decay from pitting potentials. In general, covered pitting at low current density shows increased plating residue. Using potential pulses is one way to maintain greater control over surface pitting by creating a higher density of pit nuclei while at the same time controlling their growth. Pits generated from a series potential pulses were examined ex situ for a range of pulse times and stages of pit growth were identified. An alternative method of anode dissolution was devised using potential pulses and duty cycles that allowed average current densities comparable to industrial plating conditions to be achieved. By restricting the time at pitting potentials to 0.05 s, plating residue was reduced more than six-fold in comparison to an equivalent galvanostatic experiment run at a comparable current density.INTRODUCTIONIn typical galvanostatic (direct current) nickel electroplating cells employing soluble anodes, some amount of plating residue is produced which consists of metallic nickel and impurities that detach from the bulk in the form of small fines. Significant buildup of residue requires plating operations be halted and the anode assembly cleaned of residue before operation can resume. While variables in the refining process have been shown to affect plating residue, more precise control of electrochemical variables may provide an attractive route to mitigation of residue."

"The Hollinger gold mine is in the Porcupine area, Cochrane district, in northern Ontario. The adjacent town of Timmins, which has a population of 25,856, lies 490 miles by railway north of the city of Toronto.The property was staked in the late summer of 1909. The original four claims were staked by Benjamin Hollinger, after whom the mine was named. Development commenced in the autumn of 1909 and mill construction in the winter of 1910. A catastrophic forest fire swept the district in 19ll, destroying the surface plant, so that the original 300-ton mill was not completed until June 1912. From that date up to December 31, 1945, 44,280,750 tons of ore have yielded 13,636,796 oz. gold and 2,613,354 oz. silver. The total value of the production has been $363,638,315.0REBODIES AND MINERALIZATIONThe orebodies consist of quartz veins, stringer lodes, and scockworks, with associated pyritized wall-rocks. The width of individual orebodies, as exposed by mining operations, ranges from 1 to 70 feet and averaged approximately 10 feet in 1942. The vein system forms a complex pattern in a favourable zone, which in places is 6,000 feet long and 4,000 feet wide. The deepest level being developed is 5,150 feet below the surface. Few veins are persistent for long distances, although some are continuous for more than 1,000 feet longitudinally and vertically.The host rocks consist of a closely folded series of Precambrian lava flows of Keewatin age. These are schistose and hydrothermally altered, but are believed to have originally been of intermediate to basic composition. The schistosity strikes N.70°E. and dips to the south at 75° to 80°. The structure of the formations is complex, but in the principal ore-bearing zone the general dip of the flows is to the south at a slightly flatter attitude than the schistosity."

"The estimation of recoverable ore reserves for feasibility in precious metal deposits such as Pine Creek must account not only f or the extreme variability of the ore grade but also for the complexity of the geology. Compatible models f or both must be adopted. Further, very selective mining demands reserve estimates be based on small selection units whose individual grades cannot be estimated reliably from the exploration drilling data.Multigaussian kriging is one method based on a multivariate normal model for estimating recoverable reserves under such conditions. In this paper, a non-mathematical description of the multigaussian model is presented together with its application to the Pine Creek Gold Deposit. The results, when compared to the first year of production, are encouraging for the model but not without surprises.Together, Part 1 and Part 2 of this study combine a detailed and geologically conditioned variogram analysis with an appropriate estimation method for a highly variable low-grade gold deposit. This and other studies of gold deposits familiar to the author show convincingly both that while the appropriate geostatistical skills and techniques are necessary to tackle the question of reserves, equally important but often discounted is the need for an appropriate and compatible geological model. IntroductionThe Pine Creek gold mineralization is associated with saddle reefs, and quartz and quartz- sulphide veining within the Enterprise Anti cline. The anticlinal structure is complex and, prior to mining, the mineralization was considered to be mainly strata controlled. Grades vary up to 160 grams in l .5rn core samples with coefficients of variation in excess of three.The estimation of the recoverable reserves for such a depo sit must account for both the geological complexity and the extreme variability of the gold grade.Part 1 of this work presented the geological model for the deposit and summary statistics 0 f the gold data. A detailed structural and variogram analysis considered both gold grades and the normal score (or gaussian transform) of these gold grades for different composite sizes."

"Continuous in-plant testing of collectorless Cu/Pb bulk flotation on Lyon Lake ore at Matlabi Mines Ltd. Was conducted using a portable circuit based on 5 L mini flotation cells. It is concluded that collectorless Cu/Pb flotation is a reliable phenomenon for this ore over the usual range of plant operating conditions.IntroductionFlotation of some sulphide minerals without the use of conventional collectors (e.g. xanthates) is now widely recognized. The requirement appears to be some degree of oxidation, although the nature of the surface product formed is still uncertain (Luttrell and Yoon, 1984; Buckley and Walker, 1988). The phenomenon has been termed ""collectorless"" or ""self-induced"" flotation. One of the minerals most responsive to coUectorless flotation is chalcopyrite; in contrast pyrite and sphalerite show little response and galena usually shows intermediate response (Hayes et al., 1987; Shannon and Trahar, 1986).Most of the work on collector1ess l1otation has involved single mineral or batch flotation on ore samples. There are only occasional references to collector1ess l1otation under plant conditions (Sandstrom and Jonsson, 1988; Vargas, 1990; Boyce et al., 1970). Creating and maintaining the appropriate oxidation conditions and differences in water quality are among the reasons why the phenomenon may not transfer readily to the plant (Grano et al., 1990). Periodically from the spring of 1989, Mattabi Mines Ltd. ran full-scale tests of collector1ess bulk CulPb flotation while treating Lyon Lake ore*: the observations confirmed the laboratory finding that chalcopyrite and galena floated without collector (Leroux et al., 1989).To explore this finding continuous in-plant testing using mini flotation cells was conducted which is the subject of this paper. The main objective was to determine if collectorless flotation was a reliable phenomenon over the expected range of redox conditions in the feed pulp to bulk CulPb roughing. As background, the previous work (Leroux et al., 1989; Martin, 1988) is briefly reviewed."

THE chief object in presenting this paper on bentonite is to attract general attention to one of the least known and most neglected industrial minerals of Canada, a mineral of extensive commercial possibilities, as evidenced by its development and exploitation in other countries, principally in the United States and Germany; countries upon which some of our most important Canadian industries are dependent for their supply of special clays, such as Fuller's earth and activated bentonite. It was in view of these conditions and the knowledge of the presence of large quantities of bentonite in the Canadian West that the work here reported on was under-taken. While the investigational studies have not been completed, the results indicate that among the many samples tested there are some of real merit and industrial importance. While it has been the author's privilege to examine deposits and samples of bentonite from all of the Western provinces, his chief activities in the field and in research studies have naturally been confined largely to Saskatchewan materials. Notwithstanding this, however, this paper is presented in the hope that it may stimulate a more general interest in, and study of, Canadian bentonites as a whole, a matter of such importance that provincial boundary lines should be overlooked. GENERAL CHARACTERISTICS OF BENTONITE According to Schurecht and Donda (1), bentonite is commonly composed of the mineral montmorillonite, (Mg,Ca)O.Al203 5SiO2 .nH2O, though some are known to consist of beidellite, Al2O3 3SiO2.nH2O: where n is approximately 4, and in certain cases the Al2O3 may in part be replaced by Fe2O3. For present purposes, however, it may be sufficient to state that, in general, bentonite is a "soapy' clay-like mineral or group of minerals composed largely of hydrous aluminium silicate, but frequently carrying small percentages of the alkalies, alkaline earths, and free silica, as well as silicates, gypsum, and other admixed detritus such that purification is usually necessary.

The 20th Century saw changes in the mining and metallurgical industry not only technically but also in social and environmental expectations. As projects continue to become larger to maintain competitiveness the visibility of their potential impacts raise concerns among many groups. The need for transparency, openness and early engagement of all parties are fundamental to assure success. An equally important task is to anticipate the standards that will be required to meet society?s expectations in the 21st Century. Historical Observations The mining industry of the 18 and 19th Century was dominated by opportunistic Companies and individuals with an entrepreneurial flair for adventure and risk. Those who promoted had the chance of great reward, while those willing to risk their life were assured a short one for their efforts because of the physical and health dangers that abounded. Disregarding conditions miners rewards were high even in those days, with an average Cornish miner known to be earning two pound a month in 1800. Coal and iron ore mines were driven by the needs of the industrial revolution and were the first to embark on larger scale output. Base metal mines were smaller as industrial demands for their use did not start to expand greatly till the late 19th Century. Electrification, the automobile and the 1st World War drove the increased demand for a variety of metals. Early mines were foul smelling and dusty and what was taken from below ground left spoil piles around the surface countryside after recovery of the coal or concentrate. The image of barren blackened hills is one that is easily conjured up and is an environmental legacy that still lives with us today.

"In order to determine the feasibility of a hydraulic ore hoisting installation, the optimal operating conditions were calculated for applying such a system at the Detour Lake Mine of Placer Dome Ltd. Next, a financial analysis was conducted in order to estimate the cost per tonne for hydraulic hoisting of the ore. Subsequently, the cost per tonne was compared with the hoisting costs associated with a new borehole hoist. Installing a hydraulic ore hoist at Detour Lake Mine was found to be feasible with considerably lower costs per tonne of ore. The applied research method appears to be very functional and can be used to do similar research for other mining operations. IntroductionThe principle of hydraulic ore hoisting is well known, yet hardly accepted in hard rock mining. Application of the system would result in a smaller diameter shaft requirement and a flexible, easily expandable system. However, underground ore size reduction might be necessary and practical experience with the system is limited. Following recent innovations in the field of pumping hardware, e.g. new GeHo and Siemag Transplan equipment, hydraulic ore hoisting should be seriously considered for certain mining operations. As a case study, a design was made for the development of the newly found QK-Zone at Placer Dome Ltd.’s Detour Lake Mine. Hydraulic ore hoisting has been compared with conventional skip hoisting by establishing the optimal operating conditions and pumping equipment requirements for similar capacities at a selected mining operation. Generally accepted equations for slurry transport were used to predict the variation of pressure and power requirements as a function of hourly production and pipeline diameter. These data are used to select suitable equipment and estimate cost figures in order to make a financial assessment."

"The property of Arntfield Mining Corporation, formerly Arntfield Gold Mines, Limited, covers an area of 2,110 acres and lies in Beauchastel township, western Quebec. The Francoeur mine lies to the west, and to the east are the West Wasa and Wasa Lake properties.The property was staked in September, 1923, by the late F. S. Arntfield. The early surface work was concentrated in the west part of the property along the Francoeur-Arntfield shear zone. The zone was opened by No. 1 shaft, which was sunk for an inclined depth of 250 feet. A series of silicified lenses were discovered farther east, where No. 2 shaft was later raised to the surface. A third shaft explored a shear zone about 1,900 feet to the east, where No. 3 shaft orebodies were developed.The mill was built at No. 3 shaft and production commenced in July, 1935, at 125 tons a day. This was increased to 280 tons by 1938, and later to 350 tons. The mine continued operations on this scale until April, 1942, when the exigencies of war necessitated closing. The Company was reorganized in 1944 and underground development was resumed in June, 1945. The total value of gold and silver produced to April, 1942, was $2,011, 755 from 529,987 tons of ore.ROCK TYPESThe area is underlain by highly deformed and altered Keewatin volcanics overlain by little deformed Cobalt sediments along the south boundary. The lavas in the vicinity of the mine workings are rhyolite, trachyte, andesite, and a flow breccia of intermediate composition. The fragmentals range from fine, well-bedded tuffs to coarse agglomerate in which acidic and basic horizons can be distinguished.The intrusive rocks are diorite and quartz-feldspar porphyry in the form of stock and sills, and narrow dykes of mica lamprophyre and syenite porphyry."

Le but principal de cette étude était de vérifier certaines hypothèses de nature minéralogique susceptibles d'expliquer en tout ou en partie les variations importantes observées au concentrateur no 1 de Mines Gaspé quant aux performances du circuit B de broyage et de flottation. A cette fin, nous avons examiné six séries d'échantillons prélevés lors d'une campagne de mesures effectuée au cours de l'été 1980. Ainsi, la capacité du circuit de broyage semble dépendre principalement devariation s dans les caractéristiques minéralogiqu es et texturales du minerai, par exemple du rapport grenat/quartz, le grenat ayant une influence néfaste sur le rendement de cette étape, contrairement au quartz . Quant au processus de concentration, la fraction du cuivre sous f orme de minéraux difficilement récupérés par flottation, en particulier des carbonates de cuivre, varie de façon significative dans le minerai, et cela peut certes expliquer en partie des récupérations parfois plus basses. Malgré ces variations important es de la composition minéralogique globale du minerai et de sa broyabilité, le degréde libération des sulfures de cuivre dans le produit de broyage dépend presque seulement de la granulométrie de ce produit. Afin de garantir des performances égales à l'étape de concentration, il est fortement suggéré de contrôler cette granulométrie à un niveau constant.

"The general geology of the Great Bear Lake area has been described by; D. F. Kidd in the Summary Report of the Geological Survey for 1932. A brief description of the Eldorado mine was prepared by C. S. Lord for Memoir 230; Mineral Industry of the Northwest Territories; published by the Geological Survey in 1941. Recently; a detailed geological examination of the mine area has been initiated by the Geological Survey and; under A. W. Jolliffe's leadershif; J. D. Bateman; H. B. Thurber; and M. Feniak have prepared a number of maps and reports; as yet unpublished. Detailed mapping of the mine has been carried out since August; 1943; by A. W. Esty.Kidd has shown that, in the largely granitic country along the east side of Great Bear lake, the Echo Bay district is one of several underlain by older rocks . These he has divided into the Echo Bay and Cameron Bay groups. The former are strongly altered sediments, .porphyries, and lavas; the latter and younger group is predominantly sedimentary and far less altered. Associated with the granite, which everywhere intrudes the sediments and volcanics, are earlier differentiates. Later than all these rocks are various basic intrusives, collectively termed diabase. All the rocks are of Precambrian age."

"The Fond-du-Lac uranium deposit was delineated primarily by percussion drilling and a small program of diamond drilling. Drillcore samples from three diamond drill holes as well as digitized gamma logs from percussion and diamond drill holes were utilized to define and implement an algorithm for the conversion of gamma-log data to equivalent-grade data. The procedures and detailed analysis for the provision of assay data for uranium reserve estimation are documented.IntroductionThe Fond-du-Lac uranium deposit is on the south shore of Lake Athabasca, approximately 2 km southeast o f Fond-du-Lac , northern Saskatchewan. It is on the northern rim o f the Athabasca sandstone basin.A train of mineralized glacial erratics was discovered in 1967 by Farnok, Limited by means of a helicopter-borne radiometric survey. In 1969, a program of diamond drilling by Famok was successful in locating in-situ mineralization in the Athabasca sandstone at the apex of the mineralized boulder train. Since 1974, exploration and development work have been performed under a joint-venture agreement between Eldorado Nuclear Limited and Famok Limited, with Eldorado acting as operator.From the discovery drill hole to the development of the gamma-log to equivalent-grade con version algorithm, the deposit had been tested by a total of 222 drill holes, 210 of which were percussion holes and 12 of which were diamond drill holes. The holes are generally vertical and collared at 10-metre centres on fences spaced 20 metres apart. The deposit is approximately 390 metres long, 10 to 40 metres wide and up to 45 metres deep, and is generally confined to the Athabasca sandstone. Uranium occurs as pitchblende, coffinite and uraniferou s goethite."

"ABSTRACTTill geochemistry was the principal exploration tool employed by Selco in the investigation of a zinc prospect in Lanark Township, Ontario. The geochemical studies were undertaken after the discovery at surface of marble boulders containing bands of sphalerite and lesser amounts of galena.The source of these mineralized boulders was sought by means of B-horizon soil geochemistry, followed, where appropriate, by back-hoe trenching and till sampling. The thickness of the tiff in this part of Ontario seldom exceeds 3 m or 4 m and it was generally possible to sample complete profiles of the till and thus to obtain detailed information concerning the dispersion of zinc. Drilling and trenching at the up-ice extremity of the zinc dispersion trains showed the source of the float to be sub-economic bands of sphalerite in the Grenville marble. IntroductionTill geochemistry was used extensively by Selco during the period 1975 through 1980. It was the principal exploration technique employed in a program seeking carbonate-hosted lead-zinc deposits of the Balmat-Edwards type in the Grenville rocks of southeastern Ontario. This paper describes the use of the method to locate the bedrock source of a group of sphalerite boulders found at the surface near the village of Hopetown in Lanark Township (Fig. I) . Geochemical investigations at this locality were the subject of a previous publication by the author (Sinclair, 1979).All of the analytical work related to this project was done by Bondar-Clegg & Co. Ltd. in their Ottawa laboratory. In all cases the -80 mesh fraction of the till was analyzed. The total zinc content was determined by atomic ab sorption spectrometry after hot aqua regia digestion; readily extractable zinc was determined by atomic absorption after samples had been cold-leached for 18 hours in an ammonium citrate hydroxylamine hydrochloride solution, the pH of which was adjusted to 8.5"

The origins of the electrorefining process date back to 1869, when the first ER cathodes were produced at Pembrey, South Wales. By the time that Pembrey was closing, Chuquicamata tank house was under construction, initiating in 1915 a long history of electrolytic cathodes production. Initially electrowon cathodes and later electrorefined cathodes were produced. During the history of Chuquicamata tank house, there have been several challenges associated with the quality demanded for electrolytic copper. Among them, the transformation from electrowinning to electrorefining in 1952, the onset of the direct commercialization of ER cathodes and the phase out of wire bars in the 80s, several technological changes including the implementation of permanent cathodes, and certainly the constant increase in complexity of the anodes refined. This paper explores the manner in which Chuquicamata has addressed these challenges and examines its links to process characteristics, which have been necessary to maintain a product quality according to market requirements and a brand, “CCC”, that is widely recognized worldwide. INTRODUCTION Located in the north of Chile, in the Atacama Desert, Chuquicamata is an open pit copper mine that for many years has played a relevant role in the global and local mining industry. Known from prehispanic times, the Chuquicamata deposit was initially developed between 1912 and 1915 by the Chile Exploration Company, the operating company of the Chile Copper Company controlled by the Guggenheim Brothers in the USA (Yeatman, 1916). Officially inaugurated on May 18th, 1915, by the President of Chile who pressed a button in Santiago sending a telegraph signal to the power generation plant specially built in Tocopilla, 1500 km north. It signaled the beginning of generating energy, sending it to Chuquicamata, another 140 km east (“El mineral de Chuquicamata”, 1915), marking the beginning of its industrial operation.

"In 2002, Kennecott Utah Copper Copperton Concentrator installed an Expert Control system for optimization of their SAG and Ball milling circuits. The advanced process control has been well received and is utilized well over 95% of the time. In the years since, many lessons have been learned and many advances have been made. Improvements have produced millions of dollars of benefits and have included directly controlling feedrate with complex logic as opposed to using a bearing pressure controller, modifications to how sound is used for control, modifying logic for maximizing asset utilization and using advanced control for automating equipment restart. INTRODUCTIONRio Tinto’s Kennecott Copperton Concentrator produces copper, molybdenum, gold and silver. The mill has 4 SAG mills (SAG 1-3, 34 foot diameter and SAG 4 36 foot diameter), 8 ball mills and copper and molybdenum flotation plants, as seen in Figure 1. The 2010 average data is shown in Table 1.In 2002, a Metso Cisa OCS Expert Control system was installed at Copperton for SAG and Ball mill advanced control. The expert control was first placed on SAG 2; data from the first few weeks compared with operator performance indicated approximately an 11 percent increase in throughput. After full commissioning, the system was gradually refined further by plant personnel to develop key performance indices based on SAG feed size, refinement of the sound setpoint for control of mill speed and throughput, specific rules to help the adjustment of speed based on loss of a feeder, etc. With the addition of the pebble crushing circuit, the expert control began utilizing a model estimation of crushed pebble bin level to help stabilize the impact of returned crushed and uncrushed pebbles on the SAG mills. As the ore and limitations change, it is necessary to evolve the SAG logic to better handle any constraints."

MR. M. W. Boom: I would like to congratulate Mr. Russell on his fine paper. One very good point which has always appealed to me is the smooth working of a steam hoist as compared with electrical. He does not mention the steam hoist at Springhill which has been working there for a good many years. MR. S. R. NEWTON: I have read with a great deal of interest the paper presented by Mr. Russell on the development of haulage engines in the mines of the Dominion Steel & Coal Corporation. He is to be congratulated on having produced a comprehensive article showing, step by step, the various improvements that have been made over the years in the design of such engines. I am quite in accord with Mr. Russell's statement that the positive tooth clutch can have too many teeth, and also that the method of driving a sliding clutch hub of any design should be by means of a hexagon or octagon on the shaft. Where the clutch hub does not of necessity slide on the shaft it can be pressed on and keyed to the shaft in the normal manner. With regard to the 'Cramp' internal-expanding jaw-type clutch, while it is true there are more moving parts than with the clutch consisting of a ring with internal cut teeth and a driver having a fewer number of teeth as .described by Mr. Russell; there are compensating advantages to the internal expanding jaw-type of clutch. The V shaped profile of the teeth permits of engagement of the clutch with very much less 'jockeying' of the drum. This is particularly the case in vertical-lift mine hoists, where it may be necessary to engage and disengage the clutching mechanism at frequent intervals.

"Industrial flotation is a continuous and often multistage process, where particles of a given mineral species (usually the targeted one), present in different sizes, encounter a large amount of gas bubbles (normally air) to produce mineral–bubble aggregates, which are removed from the flotation device (cell or column) as a valuable product (concentrate). The bubble content inside the cell is characterized by the prevailing hydrodynamic conditions (known as gas dispersion variables), which in turn are known to influence the flotation performance. Although most researchers and practitioners agree that the relationship between the hydrodynamic variables and flotation performance exists, the lack of an adequate method foronline measuring the average bubble diameter has prevented such studies.The aim of this study is to apply appropriate hydrodynamic variables for flotation kinetic modeling (as a key feature of flotation performance) for a given introduced particle size distribution (PSD). In this regard, experiments were conducted in a laboratory flotation column (5.6 cm internal diameter for a total height of 650 cm), and mixtures of quartz (hydrophilic gangue) and talc (naturally hydrophobic mineral), classified in four different size fractions. The correlation between the flotation rate constant and given hydrodynamic variables were analyzed. Results suggest that the relative importance of hydrodynamic variables for flotation rate modeling depends on the PSD. Finally the suggested hydrodynamic variables for each of the various particle size-classes considered were used to produce single variable models for the flotation rate constant. INTRODUCTIONIndependently of the prevailing flotation conditions, the mechanisms for bubble-particle aggregation and the residence time of the phases inside the device must also be considered. In this regard, one of the most used approaches to represent the overall flotation process is as a pseudo-chemical reaction between a particle and a bubble, whose rate (at a given time) is proportional to the amount of remaining floatable species. The proportionating constant is called the kinetic constant or the flotation rate constant."

The Outotec® Ausmelt Top Submerged Lance (TSL) Process has achieved widespread commercial acceptance over the past 40 years for the processing of copper, nickel, lead, tin, zinc and precious metal bearing feeds. The continual development and evolution of the technology during this period has resulted in a more intense smelting process with higher energy efficiency and lower operating costs. More recently, considerable effort has been invested in decarbonisation of the process through improvements such as increased oxygen usage, dry feed injection and use of low-carbon auxiliary fuels. This paper covers a number of these recent advances to the technology and highlights their impacts on energy consumption and CO2 emissions for a range of non-ferrous smelting flowsheets. INTRODUCTION Relentless demand for improvements in the profitability, safety and environmental performance of non-ferrous smelting plants has driven a continual development and evolution of processing technologies in this industry. In response to these demands, a number of bath smelting technologies have emerged over the past 40 years and have been implemented for the treatment of primary and secondary feedstocks. The Outotec® Ausmelt Top Submerged Lance (TSL) Process (henceforth Ausmelt Process) is one such bath smelting technology which has been widely adopted in a large number of greenfield projects and brownfield plant modernisations (Wood & Hughes, 2016). Emissions of CO2 from the production of non-ferrous metals represent approximately 4-5% of global totals (Rankin, 2012), comparable with the almost 10% attributed to iron and steel production. Despite significant improvements in the energy efficiency of modern smelting technologies (Coursol, Mackey, Kapusta & Cardona Valencia, 2015), primarily through increased oxygen usage, further innovation and development is still required to address their reliance on fossil fuels such as coke and coal. Transformation of the non-ferrous smelting industry to low-carbon technologies and process flowsheets is lagging behind the power and transport sectors, which have witnessed significant growth in clean/renewable energy technologies to reduce CO2 emissions and address the issue of anthropogenic climate change (IRENA, 2018; IEA, 2018).
