With the aim of environment protection the program package HOMOGEN is used for realizing the planning and noxious components control in the coal produced. Using the program package PRIPREMA the division in levels and transformation (Hermite polynoms) in the N (0,1) distribution are made. By separated kriging 50 m x 50 m blocks are estimated on the levels and detailed distributions of the estimated component content are obtained. The face - longwall face is built in the blocks estimated in this way, and the direction of mining is determined. Using the stochastic simulation the distribution of the estimated production component (e.g. sulfur) on the face is obtained. Simulating the production of all faces in operation the distribution of the estimated daily mine production component is obtained. The estimated depot component is obtained in the same way. This procedure is used in the short-term planning of the estimated component movement for a given period in advance, and also in the daily production control in the case of changing conditions, e.g. the increased atmospheric pressure. The technology is successfully applied to the Velenje Lignite Mine Slovenia.

The purpose of this section is to demonstrate the development of a method that we believe can be used for simulating and predicting mine water inflow. It will also show how important it is for personnel who model mine water inflow to have considerable experience with this subject, and with the conversion of hydrogeologic frameworks to conceptual models. Several of the models described previously are said to be three dimensional. However, closer examination reveals that there is considerable limitation in the variation possible in the third dimension. A true three-dimensional analysis would require a very large program. Therefore, it seems more reasonable to develop a procedure by which information from a two-dimensional model can be used for analysis of a three-dimensional problem. For a vertical mine shaft this is relatively easy because most two-dimensional models have an option for axisymmetric flow. If it can be assumed that axisymmetry exists about the centerline of the shaft it can be modeled easily as has been illustrated previously. For a horizontal drift or tunnel the analysis is not nearly as straightforward. However, the flow can be divided into two parts as indicated in Fig. 59. Part 1 considers the flow into the side of the drift while part 2 considers the flow into the end of the drift. To calculate the flow rate into the entire drift from the unsteady flow into a unit length the instantaneous flow per unit length may be integrated over the total length of the shaft. This procedure is shown in Fig. 60. The radial flow through any incremental length of the shaft is q. The total flow rate, Q, into the drift at any particular time is given by: The discharge q is a function of the time during which a particular segment has been draining that is dependent on the location x. In other words, a location at x = 0 has been draining during the entire time of expansion while a segment at x = L has only started to drain. The control of pH in solvent extraction circuits is an old technique (1,2) but one which has a large potential for future use. The equilibrium position of any reaction which has hydrogen or hydroxide ions, either as products or as reactants, can be controlled by pH adjustment. Several examples of reaction types which are important in solvent extraction systems and which also show a pH dependence are shown in Figure 1. The examples were chosen to show the wide variety of reactions which fit the above criteria, but it is not meant to be a complete listing of all the possible reaction types, Some of the reactions are presented in a simplified form. It is the intent of this paper to discuss pH controlled solvent extraction reactions for some relatively simple systems through more complex ones.

The problems of slope stability in open-cast mines are examined. A criterion, the instantaneous stripping ratio, is suggested for use in the design of pit slopes and as an index of control at all stages of the exploitation of the ore body, This criterion may also be related to safety and to the maximizing of profits. Two approaches to safe design of slopes, one from the point of view of soil mechanics and the other from the point of view of rock mechanics, are described and critically compared. The effect on slope stability of the regional tectonic stress field is discussed. Explanation is given of the application of the Terzaghi effective stress concept to problems in both soil and rock environments, including possible effects when borehole deformation techniques are used to measure stresses in rock in situ.

Environmental regulation in Mexico has matured dramatically and effectively in the last decade. The gap between environmental regulation in the United States and Mexico is rapidly narrowing, so much so that it is no longer necessarily less burdensome to operate in Mexico from a regulatory perspective. This paper is intended to give a general overview of the system of environmental regulation in Mexico. The actual application of Mexican laws and regulations governing the environment to a specific operation will require a much more detailed review of the applicable environmental standards.

Although the first published optimum pit limit design algorithm by Lerchs-Grossmann dates back to 1965, the majority of the open-pit mines in the U.S. has not as yet adopted such a rigorous optimization algorithm. Instead, the floating cone approach initially developed by Kennecott Copper in 1961 is still used today for various reasons. However, shortcomings with the floating cone algorithm, particularly for precious metal deposits with erratic mineral distributions, have provided a renewed interest in optimizing algorithms.

How representative are partial-panel screen tests of the in situ response of screen to roof and rib deterioration and displacements? Can a more representative procedure that tests up to two full screen panels improve the utilization and effectiveness of screen as a roof and rib support? This paper details a new full-panel screen test procedure and the initial results. The full-panel test frame was designed to test a 2.4 by 3.6-meter screened area with bolt spacing as small as 0.3-meter increments. The initial design included up to 6 screen pull points, but additional locations can be added to produce a more uniform loading. The test frame was developed to capitalize on the capabilities of the Mine Roof Simulator (MRS) at the Pittsburgh Mining Research Division (PMRD) of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). The initial tests included a baseline test of a partial panel (1.22 by 1.22-m screen section) using the original 1.52 by 1.52-meter test frame, a 1.22 by 1.22-meter screen section test in the new full-panel test frame, and two tests of 2.4 by 3.6-meter screened area in the full-panel test frame. The 1.22 by 1.22-meter screen section tests in the full-panel test frame produced a peak load 6% higher and a yield load 30% lower than the partial-panel (original) test frame. The multiple pull points of the full-panel frame produced variable yield, peak, and intermediate loads, but on average were lower than the single pull-point tests. INTRODUCTION Roof and rib surface support has become a major component of the stability and safety of underground coal openings in the past 15 years. The use of screen, either metal or synthetic, has proven to decrease the injuries of underground coal miners. By 2005, there were 466 injuries in the United States caused by roof skin failures, with numerous mines not employing roof screen. In contrast, in 2015 there were 175 injuries caused by roof skin failures, with at least some of the reduction due to the increased use of roof screen. A continued effort to increase the utilization of screen in areas of underground coal mines where workers are traveling and working can reduce these injuries even further. To aid in this effort, the testing of various screen types under various loading and attachment conditions is required. Past testing efforts have primarily consisted of partial-panel testing in a laboratory setting. Laboratory testing of roof screen, both metal and composite, has been conducted in several ways by researchers, manufacturers, and other entities. The primary focus on the testing has been evaluating weld integrity of 1.22 by 1.22-meter screen section tests of various screen types utilized in mining (Dolinar, 2006; Dolinar, 2009; Tannant, 2001). There have also been several efforts at numerical simulation of the screen and screen/rock interactions (Murali et al., 2006; Shan et al., 2014). A few full-panel tests were performed with one pull or loading point in the center of the screen panel (Shan et al., 2014). As most previous efforts have mentioned, the only true way to evaluate the capabilities of screen is to conduct full-panel testing. Single wire strand, weld, and partial-panel (1.22 x 1.22-m) tests as well as numerical modeling only provide insight into the actual response of full-panel screen. A new test frame and procedure have been developed at PMRD to conduct various loading, anchoring, and material testing.

Quarry operators must continue to change and adapt environmental compliance methods to meet the increasingly demanding regulations. To fulfill industry needs, a computer-based decision support system is being developed to facilitate decision making that mine operators are required to make regarding environmental responsibilities. This system can help to determine permitting and compliance measures needed for air, surface water, groundwater, noise, aesthetics, vegetation, wetlands, hazardous wastes, storage tanks and wildlife habitats during the development, operation, and closure phases of mining. Operators will utilize the system's user-friendly interface consisting of mouse driven responses and limited keyboard entries on a desktop computer. The system is easy to upgrade according to the user's needs and changes in current laws and regulations. Data input models, user interfaces, and support of decision making are explained. The program permits inclusion of the decision maker's own insights through "what-if' analysis, in which the user can change ad hoc entries and check the related consequences. Using this approach, the user has complete control over all steps of the decision making process. A storm water example is selected to demonstrate the potential benefits of the support system to environmental decision makers.

In 1966 Central Ohio Coal Company and Bucyrus-Erie signed a contract authorizing Bucyrus-Erie Company to design and build a 220 cubic yard dragline. This dragline would be used for stripping overburden from their coal reserves located near Cumberland, Ohio. The size of the machine was arrived at after a thorough application study of their annual coal output requirement, depth of overburden and type of terrain. The design and construction of this machine which has been designated by BECO as model number 4250-W is the title of this paper. Size wise based on machine weight the 4250-W represents an increase factor of three over our largest current dragline. Probably the easiest way of presenting a machine of this size is to build it from the bottom up.

OSIRIS is a continuous monitoring system for respirable dust which has been specifically designed for mining and related industries. By using the latest microprocessor technology, OSIRIS provides a sophisticated dust measuring system which is a cost effective alternative to regular gravimetric sampling. The system is certified intrinsically safe for use underground. Up to eight underground OSIRIS sensors can be controlled and monitored by a single IBM PC computer located at the mine surface. This computer provides continuous and instantaneous information about the dust concentrations at the sites being monitored. Information is available in tabular and graphical form. The paper gives details of proving trials of the OSIRIS system in some UK coal mines. During these trials, adjacent OSIRIS sensors placed on the same underground roadway cross-section gave virtually identical results. Throughout a good correlation was obtained with conventional gravimetric dust samples. The OSIRIS equipment proved both reliable and easy to operate. A kinetic model for leaching of various metals with different lixiviants in a batch system has been developed. Material balances for reactants and products at the solid/liquid interface were formulated and solutions to these balances were obtained in view of practical conditions. Special emphasis has been given to examine mixed controlled reaction systems where both heterogenous reaction and mass transfer play important role on the overall rate expression. The resulting kinetic expressions for either powder or rotating disc are discussed in light of experimental findings for various metals. Examples of the metal dissolution systems considered in this study include cobalt, nickel, copper and gold in acid, cyanide or ammoniacal solutions.

In order for a taxpayer to produce income, he may be required to exhaust his capital assets. With respect to the mining industry, those exhaustible capital assets may result in income tax deductions under the general categories of depreciation, obsolescence, losses and depletion. The percentage depletion deduct ion concept is not based upon "economic" depletion, or "geological" depletion theories. Instead, it is wholly an income tax concept created by Congress. This is significant in that, in its application, tax depletion has no adherence to traditional economic or geological depletion concepts For example, the Internal Revenue Code limits percentage depletion to 50 percent of the miner's net income for the taxable period.1/ Should a particular miner extract and sell 500,000 tons of material during the year, but at a loss, he receives no percentage depletion. The same would apply to an electric utility which mined its own coal. Should its mining costs exceed the "going price" for coal, as established by actual arm's-length sales in the market, the utility has no net income, and is therefore not entitled to percentage depletion.2/

The Bureau of Mines investigated a simultaneous elutriation and flotation technique for separating polyethylene terephthalate (PET) from polyvinylchloride (PVC). The Tuscaloosa Research Center, through a cooperative agreement with a recycling company, devised an elutriation-flotation method for beneficiating the mixed heavy plastics portion of municipal solid wastes which is composed of polystyrene (PS), PET, and PVC. A sodium carbonate brine was used to remove the lighter PS from the heavier PET and PVC. Over 98 pct of the PS was recovered in a high purity PS concentrate containing 99.7 pct PS, The remaining PET and PVC mixture was washed to remove the brine salts that would be harmful to the flotation process. The clean PET and PVC mixture was conditioned in a solution of 45 g/t gelatine and floated in a short (l-m) column flotation cell in an upward flow of water. In a single flotation step, over 75 pct of the PET was recovered in a high purity product containing 99.8 pct PET. The bubbles attached to the PET lowered the effective density of the PET-bubble agglomerate and allowed successful separation of these agglomerates from the PVC plastic pieces. This method separated two-thirds of the mixed plastics fraction into high purity PS and PET products suitable for recycling and left only one-third of the plastics in the mixed plastics product.

P.T. Freeport Indonesia currently operate a 600,000 t/d mining and 125,000 t/d milling operation in the remote highlands of Irian Jaya, Indonesia. The isolated location and generally difficult working conditions make for challenges not encountered in most North American operations. In spite of this, the mill technical groups have been able to develop and maintain a highly effective level of plant wide automation. This has been achieved through the appropriate selection of available technologies and the implementation of innovative management practices. This paper provides an overview of the control systems currently installed and focuses on those practices which have resulted in the long term success of process control at Freeport.

The use of low-angle forward light scattering for measurement of particle size distribution has been described previously.1 Laboratory instrumentation using this technology is used routinely in operating plants for quality control and production control.2,3 Extension of the technique to on-line process monitoring and control has also been undertaken in several important areas. This paper will discuss the application of MICROTRAC R systems to the monitoring of particle size in wet slurry processes and dry powder grinding circuits. Examples of existing installations will be given with emphasis on performance and on-line reliability.

A program of geological research in support of mineral exploration efforts is outlined. Specific goals are stated, approaches to accomplish their attainment are described, and the type of useful results to be expected are outlined. Because mineral exploration or prospecting has intensely practical goals, research in support of it must be applied research, applied to the problem of maintaining or increasing the discovery rate of the exploration effort. To attain research goals, attention to personnel selection, group structure, and program are critically important, and in about that order. A large percentage of the professional personnel should have had experience in mining geology or mineral exploration, and they all should be prospector-oriented. Structuring in the group should be at a minimum, with wide allowance for the kind of independent research which is essential to the nurturing of on-target creativity. The program should be field-oriented, and it should include a wide representation of those subdisciplines of geology which are applicable to mineral exploration. The types of results to be anticipated include improved or new conceptual models for various types of orebodies and their settings from which new ore guides can be derived, new exploration techniques, and the development of a knowledge bank for various aspects of the exploration effort.

Equivalent-pressure ventilation is a method of balancing the air pressure between a productive face and its gob to extinguish fires and prevent the infiltration of toxic gases, so that the production of the face can be maintained. The method was successfully applied in Coal Mine No. 1 of Hebi Coal Mining Administration in north-central China. In this article, a practical application of the equivalent-pressure method to prevent carbon monoxide from entering an active longwall face adjacent to a fire breeding area is described, and four steps to achieve equivalent-pressure are discussed. The reliability of using this method and measures to maintain the equivalent-pressure are analyzed. It was observed that this method could maintain high production level while no sacrificing safety at the longwall face.

The lack of metrics to assess clamshell formation dredgeability limits the ability of engineers to predict the dredgeability of compact material and increases the risks associated with clamshell selection. Research is needed to develop metrics for predicting clamshell dredgeability. The objective of this paper is to evaluate possible metrics to predict the dredgeability of compact aggregates by hydraulically actuated clamshell dredges. Data on cylinder pressures and displacements, motor current, bucket tilt and cycle time (CT) were collected from a dredge. Work done and motor energy, potential metrics, were computed and their suitability in predicting dredgeability evaluated. Data analysis shows that; there is no correlation between tilt angle and work done or motor energy; a low correlation between CT and work done, and a strong correlation between CT and motor energy. Work done is a better measure of formation dredgeability, than motor energy, as it shows lower variability. However, in difficult digging conditions, work done alone does not accurately predict dredgeability. This work shows that, it is feasible to use cylinder pressures and motor signals data to predict dredgeability.

A description is given of an experimental ventilation control system designed, built, and tested by WVU under United States Bureau of Mines sponsorship. A description is given of the control, system used and the mine-wide microcomputer-based ventilation monitoring system used with it. Test results of experiments conducted with this system at Eastern Associated Coal Corporation's Federal No. 2 underground coal mine are presented. In addition, a brief description is given of a new microprocessor based system presently being tested.
