"Open pit mines can produce large disturbances within regional hydrogeologic systems. The degree of disturbance and the consequences on the local environment depend on the size of the pit and on the physical setting of the mine. Comparisons and contrasts are presented for three Noranda base metal open pit mine sites.The Brunswick Mining and Smelting No 6 open pit has a surface area of 11 ha and a depth of 185 m. It is located within complexly deformed schists and meta-volcanic rocks. The massive sulphide and iron formations visible along the north and southwest walls of the pit generate acid drainage. Mining ceased in 1983, and the pit is presently being filled with waste rock and neutralized drainage water. Water balance calculations estimated a total fill up time of sixteen years. As the water level rises, leakage to groundwater could take place across a fault zone intersecting the pit.The Mattabi Mines F-Group pit has a surface area of approximately 3 ha and a depth of 50 m and is also set in meta-volcanic rocks and acid generating iron formations. Production at this site ceased in 1982, and the low pH pit water is neutralized and pumped into a nearby lake at least every five years. Major water inflows are from precipitation and groundwater. Groundwater mounds within adjacent high land surrounding the pit provide a natural hydraulic barrier to groundwater flow, except for the southeast side. As a consequence, the pit water elevation is being kept below the elevation of the nearby creek in which some of the pit water could drain.The Bell Copper open pit covers an area of 40 ha and is 270 m deep. With present ore reserves, the mine might be in operation until 1992. The geology around the pit consists of andesitic tufts, siltstones and shales, and the acid generation potential of the rock is relatively low. A recent hydrogeological study estimated fill up time by precipitation and groundwater to be in the order of 260 years.With increasingly more stringent requirements for mine closure, it is anticipated that more detailed hydrological and hydrogeological studies of open pits will be required to determine post-closure environmental impacts and the suitability of open pits for mine waste disposal."

Without it, we would not be able to enjoy many of the things that we take for granted, such as computers, airplanes and stainless steel appliances in our homes and workplaces, to mention a few.Nickel occurs in nature both as sulphide and oxide ores. Approximately 36% of the nickel reserves in the Western World occur as sulphide and 64% as oxide ores. Sulphide ores respond to concentration processes, whereas, oxide ores do not. Sulphide ores mined at 1% nickel can be readily concentrated to 10% nickel, whereas, oxide ores cannot be concentrated and therefore have to be processed as mined.Laterite ores are normally classified intotwo groups:1. The high-magnesia ores, saprolites or serpentines, are, as a rule, processed by smelting. The main reason for this is that the nickel replaces magnesium in the magnesium-silicate lattice. To be able to recover nickel, the lattice has to be destroyed. This can be achieved by smelting under reducing conditions.Acid leaching is also possible, but in this case, large amounts of MgSO4 or MgCl2 will be produced making it costly to regenerate the acid.2. The high-iron, low-magnesia ores are known as limonite. The nickel is relatively loosely bonded to goethite and hence can be recovered by selective reduction followed by ammonium-ammonium carbonate leaching. In recently developed processes, these ores are also being extracted by acid pressure leaching, with high Ni and Co recoveries.This paper focusses on the production of ferronickel and nickel matte from the highmagnesia ores."

"INTRODUCTIONTo bring a mining property into production in the Canadian High Arctic a company must deal with the harsh environment, the short shipping season and the high cost of labour. In trying to minimize the effect of these factors, the concept of a barge-mounted process plant was investigated as an alternative to the conventionally built concentrator. Cominco's previous experience gained at the Black Angel Mine on Greenland's west coast suggested that this would be a practical alternative.The normal shipping season at Little Cornwallis Island is approximately six weeks long, from mid-August to the end of September. All equipment and materials must be delivered during this small ''shipping window."" The logistics problems are enormous; if the conventional approach had been used the major process equipment would have been delivered to Little Cornwallis Island at the same time as the completed barge actually was! Construction would also be starting at the start of the worst climatic conditions, the Arctic winter. Nine months production was gained by opting for the ""Barge"" approach.What the Arctic winters do to the shipping season, so do they affect the productivity and the cost of labour. Construction labour must come from southern Canada. Thus higher transportation costs and higher wage rates, with more overtime and incentives, increase the labour costs to approximately 50% over normal southern rates. Couple these rates with the lower productivity involved with men working in the extreme cold temperatures and the net effort is worth avoiding. A process plant being constructed in Southern Canada can take advantage of more accessible labour at lower costs, increased productivity and a faster construction schedule. The barge concept must still deliver the equipment and materials during the ""shipping window"" but it can in the completed form."

Operations and maintenance departments have had a long-standing adversarial relationship. The widespread evolution and adoption of modern management techniques, such as reliability centered maintenance (RCM) and Lean, however, has driven interest in working co-operatively to optimize overall plant performance. Mining and minerals operations have long adopted RCM in maintenance and are now adopting Lean throughout organizations. Such modern management initiatives explicitly call for co-operation between the two disciplines of maintenance and production and many advances have been made in terms of people and methodology. One area that has lagged behind in supporting these developments, however, is information systems. Enterprise asset management (EAM) systems in maintenance and newer manufacturing execution systems (MES) in operations have not been truly integrated in the needed ways. Complicated plants, different software architectures, continually changing conditions and many other variables have led to systems problems, which have contributed to the maintenance/operations divide. Master data synchronization (the plant tree) and integrated reporting of real-time data with transactional data are just two of the issues that are being solved by new approaches in information technology, including web services and service orientated architectures. New technologies are coming on-stream to enable the final bridging of the gap.

"INTRODUCTIONA beneficiation plant to upgrade earthy iron ores is being installed by the Iron Ore Company of Canada in Sept-Iles, Quebec.The crude ore for the plant will come from the Knob Lake area, located in Northern Quebec, where mining has been in progress since 1954.Some 170 million tons of ""direct 11 ores have been mined and shipped in the past eighteen years, with an overall silica content of 7 to 8 percent. No beneficiation - except the reduction of the top size to about 2 inches - took place during this period, but extensive research work has been carried out, in order to find a feasible process.Since “washing"", gravity separation, roasting and magnetic separation experiments did not indicate positive enough results, flotation was tried and found to be feasible.The beneficiation complex being installed will consist of grinding, flotation, dewatering - i.e.: thickening, filtering and drying - balling feed preparation, and agglomeration - i.e.: balling and induration.This process will result in a product superior to the ""direct shipping"" ores and will also expand the ore reserves by allowing material with a higher silica content to be utilized.THE OREThe Knob Lake ores are grouped by mineralogical composition and by grade.BLUE ORES, representing roughly two thirds of the reserves, carry their iron content mostly in the form of massive, blue hematite and martite.YELLOW ORES, about one sixth of the reserves, have predominantly hydrated iron oxides as the iron bearing minerals.RED ORES, the other sixth of the reserves, carry the iron mostly in the form of red hematite.The gangue in all ores is mainly quartz, but aluminum oxides and hydroxides are also present, particularly in the red ores."

"Gold, because of low head grade and recovery, is usually of minor importance in the economics of base metal flotation mills. Because of the above little metallurgical attention is usually provided to gold in these mills. But collectively, the gold losses can be significant. For instance, Noranda presently has interest in 13 base metal flotation mills with a collective gold recovery of only 50%. Gold losses are in the order of 150.000 oz per year!The Noranda Technology Centre, in cooperation with Noranda's milling operations, has been investigating the potential of gravity concentration of gold from base metal flotation mills. This paper outlines the pilot and plant testing conducted at three operations with distinctly different ore types; porphyry copper, complex massive sulphide and polymetallic semi-massive sulphide. Testing has been with the Knelson Concentrator which has proven to successfully recover fine gold in a simple, trouble free circuit. Discussion of issues which have risen from the testwork is included. INTRODUCTIONGold, because of low head grade and recovery, is usually of minor importance in the economics of poly-metallic base metal ores. TABLE I presents gold heads and recovery for some of Noranda's base metal mills. It should be noted that the stated recoveries are to payable concentrates, but does not reflect the actual payable gold recovery which in cases is significantly lower. Noranda's average gold recovery into a gold payable concentrates is about 45%. This equates to a collective loss in the order of $57 MM per year of gold"

"During the period June 2007 to March 2007, John Starkey of Starkey & Associates (Starkey) worked in Russia for High River Gold, supervising the engineering design work that was being done at the IRGIREDMET Research Institute, in Irkutsk Russia. The work entailed moving the Newmont No. 4 mill from Elko, Nevada to Berezitovy, a mine site north and west of the city of Skovorodino, in the Amur Region of Siberia. This was a grass roots project and required construction of all phases of the infrastructure and process facilities that are associated with a 5000 t/d open pit mine and CIP mill.During the course of this engineering design exercise, many aspects of doing business in Russia were encountered, with regard to laws, norms, and business practices. This paper discusses many of these findings. Also by living in Irkutsk, many observations on Russian life and social customs were made and these merit discussion from a general interest point of view.Prior to going to Russia, another engineering and ore testing firm (TOMS) had approached Starkey to find out if Starkey could assist them in upgrading their SAG ore testing procedures to Western standards in order to offer their clients turnkey projects, that included reliable SAG and AG grinding. TOMS was aware that Starkey had invented the SPI test but did not know that the SAGDesign test had by then been fully developed and was being offered commercially as the most accurate way in the world to design new grinding mills. They were also unaware that this new testing method had been patented by Outokumpu (now Outotec) and that this method allowed them access to a design method, through Starkey, that would lead to a manufacturer’s guarantee (by Outotec) of throughput and grind for any new semi-autogenous or autogenous grinding circuit, with or without ball mills.When Starkey started working at IRGIREDMET in June 2005, they also made a request to add a design method for SAG mills that would be considered acceptable to Western clients. From these requests, presentations were made in Russian to both institutes and each decided to join the SAGDesign Consulting Group as satellite members and buy a SAGDesign test mill to use with their Bond Ball Mill Work Index mills, to provide SAGDesign testing services. To complete the service, contracts have been put in place for Starkey to use these results to design new grinding equipment and to train engineers at TOMS and IRGIREDMET how to do this work.Starkey also undertook to train engineers at both labs to go into the field and to take the samples for SAGDesign testing programs. It is here where the SAGDesign testing service upgrades other grinding test programs because the samples to be used for design are professionally chosen, and the results will be much more likely to produce a satisfactory design. Starkey is a mining engineer and is uniquely qualified to do this task. This and the SAGDesign test are the key components that lead Outotec to offer a performance guarantee for mills designed by Starkey."

Some of these lessons are: 1) Project leaders must have a leadership that fosters good communication and team work; and this leadership style must come from top management. 2) A good communication must exist between the personnel from Engineering, Construction, and Operation. Also, this good communication must come from top management. 3) Starting the project with a solid Engineering Study. 4) Do not misunderstand cost with cost/benefit; always look at the cost/benefit. 5) Selecting good Contractors and good Suppliers. 6) Good training before the project commissioning is essential to reduce the learning curve period, this is even more important in areas where local people do not have any background in mining activities. 7) Recognizing that any project has a learning curve and it must be reflected on the production budget. 8) Avoid an over optimistic Mine preparation time schedule.BACKGROUNDIndustrias Peñoles S.A. de C.V.The mission of Industrias Peñoles, S.A. de C.V. It offers rational explanations for the many blast effects which the current theory does not address and the need for adequate timing delays between rows. "Next to the actual mine of Les Explorations Muscocho Ltée in Montauban, Quebéc, you could find a total of 364 000 tons of flotation tailings assaying 1.4 Au g/t et 82 g Ag/t to the south of the municipality. This tailings pile is what is left of previous operations. Preliminary leaching tests on these tailings in laboratory columns gave interesting results which led to tests in larger columns in 1984 and to a pilot test on a 750 ton heap in Montauban during the summer of 1985.This paper briefly describes the columns tests performed at the Centre de Recherches minérales and the heap leaching test designed and conducted by SOQUEM in Montauban. The Freeport McMoRan El Paso Refinery uses co-generation to produce some of its electricity and all of its steam. This paper will cover the operation of the co-generation plant natural gas turbine at a fixed RPM for blade longevity and energy output. The by-product heat from the turbine passes through boilers with additional heat from a duct burner to produce steam for the Tank House and auxiliary operations. The steam demand varies dramatically throughout the day based on unloading activities in the Tank House. The use of an automated steam control system within the El Paso Refinery will help stabilize line pressure by incrementally controlling steam consumption based on electrolyte temperature. This will minimize steam line pressure fluctuations. INTRODUCTION In the mid 1920’s the Nichols Copper Company of Laurel Hill, New York recognized the need for a modern copper refining facility in the southwest. Due to the many railroad heads, affordable power and abundant labor supply, and the close proximity to regional copper smelters in Mexico, Arizona, and New Mexico, El Paso became the logical location. In December 1928, ground was broken for the joint venture refinery between the Nichols Copper Company, Phelps Dodge, and the Calumet and Arizona Mining Company. In September 1930, Nichols Copper Company became a part of Phelps Dodge Corporation after a stock exchange. In July 1938, Nichols Division officially became Phelps Dodge Refining Corporation. In March 2007, Freeport McMoRan Copper & Gold acquired Phelps Dodge. Energy costs (electrical and thermal) are critically important in the viability of modern copper electrorefineries. The El Paso Refinery produces electricity and steam through its cogeneration system. The El Paso cogeneration facility is a natural gas, 15-megawatt facility containing five turbine generators and associated waste heat recovery boilers. The facility is divided into two phases. Phase I consists of two Allison 2.2-megawatt turbine generators. Phase II consists of three Solar Taurus 3.5-megawatt turbine generators. Presently three units in Phase II are operated. The Phase I units were purchased and installed in 1986 and the Phase II units in 1992 (Solar 1991). The facility operated at full capacity until 2003 when steam demand was significantly reduced due to decrease in cathode production and closure of the copper sulfate and precious metal operations. Phase I units were taken out of service and put on care and maintenance status.

"IntroductionThe Cape Breton Development Corporation (CBDC) located in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, in eastern Canada, was established in 1967. Its mandate at that time was to facilitate a phased downsizing of the coal industry and developing viable replacement industries. The oil crisis in the early 1970s changed CBDC’s mandate and focus was modified to increase coal production to support Nova Scotia Power Commission’s “off oil” policy for their power generators. In the late 1980s the mandate to develop viable replacement industries was eliminated and CBDC became primarily a coal mining company. CBDC presently operates two underground coal mines, Phalen Colliery and Prince Colliery, using a retreat longwall method of mining. Both mines operate beneath the Atlantic Ocean. CBDC also operates associated infrastructure — central workshops, a railroad, coal preparation plant, and international pier. The Need For Substantial ChangeOver the last few years, CBDC has been facing some challenging issues, including improving labour management relations and achieving financial self-sufficiency and profitability. Recent achievements with regard to human resource issues, especially in the areas of collective bargaining, absenteeism, and attendance, show noticeable improvements. All participants should be commended for successfully concluding the collective bargaining process with all four CBDC unions, CUPE; CAW; IAM&AW; and UMWA. However, although these changes are encouraging, even critical in the short term, they are not sufficient to ensure the long-term viability of the company. Market ForcesShort- and long-term financial realities are drawing the need for further substantive changes. The corporation has a mandate to achieve financial self-sufficiency by the year 1999. This goal can only be achieved through a combination of cost reductions and productivity gains, specifically, a reduction in the workforce of 658 and an increase in production of 800 000 tonnes annually. This increase in productivity requires CBDC to re-think the way it does things.In the longer term, CBDC faces even greater challenges. The energy market is becoming more competitive. The electrical utilities across Canada are anticipating deregulation and are positioning themselves for the resultant competition. As primary fuel supplier to Nova Scotia Power Inc. (NSPI), the corporation will have to become ever more competitive to stay in business."

"The traditional metallurgical scale-up techniques for flotation plants are based on lumped flotation rate constants, dimensionless hydrodynamic numbers and the use of safety factors. Once the plant has been designed, the flotation principles that govern scale-up play almost no role in the optimization of the circuit to meet its metallurgical targets. This deficiency can potentially lead to a plant design incapable of meeting its targets, especially when circuits incorporate large flotation cells. This paper demonstrates the application of the k = PSbRf model in providing a suitable framework for flotation modelling, scale-up and circuit optimization, thus presenting an integrated approach to the problem. Studies were conducted at Teck Cominco’s Red Dog concentrator to characterize cell hydrodynamics, gas dispersion properties, froth flow behaviour, entrainment and ore floatability to obtain the key data necessary to develop a model for the flotation circuit. The findings of these studies are presented in this paper, which provide valuable insights into the modelling and optimization of the Red Dog flotation circuit. IntroductionThe traditional methodology for flotation scale-up and plant design is based on the ruleof- thumb with safety factors and dimensionless hydrodynamic group similitude considerations. With the recent trend toward larger flotation cells with volumes of 150 m3 and greater in concentrators, the problem of scale-up has become even more acute. The scale-up factors that may have been tolerated on smaller cells are not applicable to larger cells. The transportation of froth in these large cells adds further complexity to the problem. Arbiter et al. (1980) foresaw this problem and pointed out that if scale-up were attempted by rule-ofthumb and trial-and-error, the probability of failure would then increase with scale. This problem is confounded by the fact that the design and scale-up considerations used for a new flotation circuit play almost no role in optimization of the circuit to meet its metallurgical target. This results in a plant design, which may be incapable of meeting its metallurgical targets. There have been several instances where new concentrators have required significant circuit modifications and additional capacity to achieve design targets."

"The Kidd Creek concentrator is located twenty-six kilometres east of Timmins, Ontario, within a metallurgical complex including a 109,000 MTPY zinc plant and a new 59,000 MTPY copper smelter and refinery. A complement of 159 persons is employed in the operation of the concentrator.Ore from the Kidd Creek Mine is crushed underground to minus 15. 0 cm, then transported twenty-seven kilometres by rail 1:0 the concentrator. After being crushed to minus 1. 6 cm, the ore is further processed by grinding and flotation.The concentrator commenced operations in November of 1966 at a designed capacity of 8,200 MTPD. Two parallel flotation and grinding circuits treated copper-zinc ore (2.28% Cu, 5.63% Zn) and a third treated silver-copper-lead-zinc ore (230 g/MT Ag; 0.57% Cu, 0.88% Pb, 7.89% Zn).By 1975, the concentrator was treating 9,100 MTPD of ore. Seven concentrates were being produced, namely, high silve1: copper, low silver copper, lead, low silver zinc, high silver zinc, pyrite and tin.Planned minesite expansion to a second underground mine required increased concentrator throughput. Expansion of the concentrator enabling a thirty-three percent increase in copper-zinc ore throughput occurred during the period 1975 through 1978. This expansion included increased load-in capacity, major redesign in the crusher house, the addition of a fourth grinding and flotation circuit, the building of a fourth dryer, and numerous expansions of services."

"Abstract — The Detour Lake gold deposit is located within the northwestern limit of the Archean Abitibi Subprovince of the Superior Province. Mineralized zones are hosted by a sequence of pillowed and massive flows, hyaloclastite units, and altered ultramafic rocks, and are commonly oriented parallel to a series of high-strain zones that are co-planar to the regional-scale Sunday Lake Deformation Zone. Early in its kinematic history, the Sunday Lake Deformation Zone placed older (2.72 Ga) volcanic rocks of the Detour Lake Formation over younger (2.70 Ga) sedimentary rocks of the Caopatina assemblage. Gold mineralization is also parallel to the position of a laterally persistent siliceous rock unit, the 2.725 Ga ‘Chert Marker Horizon.’ The Chert Marker Horizon coincides with the boundary between the mafic-dominated upper Detour Lake Formation and the ultramafic-dominated lower Detour Lake Formation. Stratigraphic and geochronological data suggest that the Chert Marker Horizon is a deformed felsic volcaniclastic unit. At a cut-off of 0.6 g/t Au, the Detour Lake deposit contains 17.26 million ounces of Au within 445.9 million tonnes of rock grading 1.20 g/t Au. Gold occurs in shear-hosted and extensional vein arrays within rocks of the upper and lower Detour Lake Formation and within the Chert Marker Horizon. "This paper deals with the results of the variation of thermal conductivity of rocks with pressure on a laboratory scale. For this purpose, the authors have added a pressure-supplying unit to the apparatus developed by Mousset-Jones and McPherson (1986), Önder (1995), Ashworth and Ashworth (1979), and Innaurato and Occella (1989) in order to measure the thermal conductivity under pressure. The values obtained from the tests performed by this new apparatus have been stated using a regression analysis and the related graphs have been drawn. Results have shown that the thermal conductivity of rock varies digressively with pressure. The same results have been obtained in different rocks types. IntroductionOne of the most important tasks of mining engineers is that of establishing, maintaining and sustaining safe and healthy working conditions in underground mines.Heat can have a profound effect on safe and healthy working conditions and is one of the main problems in deep underground mines. In this regard, the temperature of the air passing through the mine openings increases steadily and causes a decrease in the efficiency of workers due to the unwanted physical effects to human bodies in the working area. At present, many open pit mines are designed to operate and feed a processing plant with ore characteristics that were defined in the design of the mining business, which are not necessarily the same as those found during the operation. This is the case of Spence Mine, whose design was conceived considering the extraction of primary iron sulphides, however, with the extraction of such minerals, it was necessary to mine and process minerals with secondary enrichment. Then it is necessary to work with a greater selectivity degree in the operation, however the capacities of the mine and operational resources were not designed for this. Thus, the changes in the general conditions of the operation should be considered as a series of geometallurgical restrictions to achieve production schedules. The above facts impacts directly in the short-term planning, whose task is to achieve the goals proposed in productive long-term planning because the company does not have the tools necessary to plan with the degree of selectivity required, so it should be done by hand, discretizating and scheduling the production polygons. Naturally, this manual process in the short term planning deviate sharply from the areas in operation, opening new fronts and benches that result in a significant increase in costs and a loss of the value of the mineral resource to miss the exploitation sequence. The research presented in this paper is related to the development of a mathematical programming model to support the short-term planning, so as to integrate the challenge of selective mining with geometallurgy restrictions, to provide the planner a guide to construction of the polygon of exploitation, guiding the fines production to achieve the goals of the proposed production plan.

It does tend to concentrate in flu dusts and if you get enough of it you can recover it and sell it but I have never heard of anyone putting a penalty on it.Question - I once ran into a small copper mine in Peru that had cadmium in the copper concentrate but no zinc. The copper smelter charged a penalty for the cadmium. Why would this be?"
