I. Introduction. THE object of this paper is to present a concise statement on the genesis of the copper- and lead-deposits of the Bingham Mining District, Utah. It is essentially a condensation of a chapter in a detailed report on this district, together with so much on geologic features, and on the character and occurrence of the ores as bears on the problems of ore-deposition. The studies upon which the paper is based were undertaken in 1900 under the direction of S. F. Emmons, Geologist-in-Charge of the Section of Metalliferous Deposits, U. S. Geological Survey; and a little additional data was secured in subsequent years. The evidence then obtained as to the genesis of the replacement copper-ores has led, to conclusions which differ somewhat from explanations hitherto current. Accordingly, it seems desirable briefly to present the facts together with the resulting conclusions in a separate paper.

The characteristics of each ore make it impossible to predict the quality of a flotation concentrate without exploratory tests. The research begins with laboratory batch tests, and then, after advances in the determination of process conditions, the complexity of the tests increases in order to evaluate new parameters. The closed cycle test (LCT) simulate circuits with load recirculation and the greatest difficulty of this test is to stabilize the circuit and achieve equilibrium. Depending on mass availability, the types of tests that offer the highest reliability and informations about flotation in an ongoing process are mini-scale or pilot-scale tests. This work aimed to compare the results of the flotation tests in three scales (batch test, LCT and mini pilot) for the Bonsucesso ore, a new deposit, owned by Nexa Resources, that has sphalerite, zinc ore, and galena, lead ore. In the open flotation circuit of galena was obtained 27.57% content with 26.70% recovery, in the LCT test the content was 31.54% with 64.64% recovery and in the mini pilot reached 51.22 % content with 65.51% recovery. In the open sphalerite flotation the zinc content was 55.51% with 77.35% recovery, in the LCT test the zinc content was 56.71% with 84.42% of recovery and in the mini pilot of 50.02% content with 94.54% recovery.

Direct mineral carbonation has been investigated as a process to convert gaseous CO2 into a geologically stable final form. The process utilizes a slurry of water, with bicarbonate and salt additions, mixed with a mineral reactant, such as olivine (Mg2SiO4) or serpentine [Mg3Si2O5(OH)4]. Carbon dioxide is dissolved into this slurry, resulting in dissolution of the mineral and precipitation of magnesium carbonate (MgCO3). Optimum results have been achieved using heat pretreated serpentine feed material and high partial pressure of CO2 (PCO2). Specific conditions include: 155°C; P002=185 atm; 15% solids. Under these conditions, 78% conversion of the silicate to the carbonate was achieved in 30 minutes. Process mineralogy has been utilized to investigate the appropriate feed characteristics, identify the process products, and interpret the mineral dissolution and carbonate precipitation reaction paths.

INTRODUCTION Recent advances in high-pressure water jet technology can be effectively employed in mining and tunneling. The new equipment is based on available industrial hardware such as pumps, nozzles, and rotary swivels and seals, and is compatible with present mining and tunneling techniques. Principal advantages of water-jet assisted cutting relative to standard cutting are higher production rates, lower dust levels, and reduced fines. When used on rock and coal miners, water jets mean that relatively smaller and cheaper machines can be purchased. If properly applied, the combined effect is lower cost and significantly improved health and safety. While commercial use of high-pressure water blast cutting and extraction of rock (and concrete) already has a firm foothold in Europe, application of this new technique is just beginning in America. This paper begins with current American applications of high-pressure water jets for drills, for slotting and channeling machines, and then discusses the emerging technology for initiating rock failure in conjunction with drag bits on coal plows, continuous miners and boom-type miners (roadheaders). The focus of this paper is use of high-pressure water jets for cutting rock. High-pressure water jet cutting utilizes water above 70 MPa and currently reaches to 300 MPa and above. Some informatfon is included on low pressure "wethead" coal shearers and boom miners with water pressure to about 15 MPa.

Within the scope the collaborative research centre 599 (Medical University of Hanover, University of Veterinary Medicine Hanover, University of Hanover) the behaviour of the degradation of magnesium materials as implants are investigated by using animal experiments (rabbits). Thus extruded cylindrical pins from the magnesium alloys MgCa0.8%, WE43 and LAE 442 were implanted intramedullary in the tibiadiaphyses. The implantation duration was 3 and 6 month. After the explantation 3 point bending tests were carried out to investigate the possible changes of the mechanical properties. Clearly changes in dependence of the implantation duration could be determined. The three magnesium alloys show a decrease of the mechanical resistance with an increasing implantation time. To evaluate the degradation process, wich is the reason for the changes, micrographs and element analyses (EDX) have been accomplished after the 3 point bending tests. The micrographs show for all used magnesium alloys corroded surfaces but no preferred corrosion on the grain boundarys. The element analyses show beside a layer which is rich in calcium and phosphorus an agglomeration of rare earth elements in this layer. With these results a using of magnesium alloys as a material for implants can be announced.

Carroll Cave, located in Camden County, in south central Missouri, is one of the most significant caves in Missouri with over 12 miles of mapped passages and over 100 known but unmapped side passages. In the early 1990’s there was a breakdown of the originally excellent landowner/caver relations as the ownership of the only known entrance moved to a new generation and grottos squabbled for control. Subsequently the current owner of the natural cave entrance refused to grant anyone permission to enter.

The Bureau of Mines investigated the mineralogy, tonnage, and beneficiating characteristics of oxidized (nonmagnetic) taconite iron resources of the Western Mesabi Range as part of its program to insure adequate future domestic mineral supplies. Magnetic taconite currently provides about 95 pct of Mesabi production, but the large tonnages of oxidized taconite between the magnetic deposits will be needed to help meet future domestic demand for iron ore. Three bulk samples that represent large tonnages from the Western Mesabi Range were selected to determine their mineral composition and liberation by light optical microscopy and to test their beneficiating response. This report describes the mineralogy and liberation characteristics of the three samples of the Biwabik Iron-Formation for 26.5 mi (42.7 kID) from Keewatin to Grand Rapids, MN. (Details of response to beneficia-tion were reported previously.) The samples represent mostly material from the Lower Cherty Member of the Biwabik-Iron Formation, although one sample included some Upper Cherty Member. Minerals of all three samples were quartz (chert), hematite, goethite, and minor to trace amounts of magnetite, iron carbonate, and iron silicates. It was concluded that the oxidized taconites of the Western Mesabi Range represent a subeconomic indicated resource that can be selectively mined and beneficiated as a future large source of iron feed for steelmaking.

Without adequate soil available, it is difficult to rehabilitate a large area of acid mine waste dump with sustainable plant communities, which has a strong potential acid generation. In the present project, paste tailings capping method has been put forward to reconstruct plant ecosystem on acid mine waste rock dump. This rehabilitation method uses paste tailings as capillary break and plant growth media. The tailings used contained 26.3 per cent of particles of less than 20 ¦m which satisfy the requirement of grain of paste tailings preparation. The tailings are not acid- producing materials. In addition to Cu, total contents of Zn, Pb, Cr, Cd, As and Ni in tailings are lower than those in local soil. Paste tailings concentration 70 per cent ~ 72 per cent was prepared by concentrating ten per cent tailings by using polypropylenecrylic sodium as flocculation. The potential pollution risks are low by using paste tailings as capillary break layer. Plants directly grown in the tailings did not particularly accumulate Cu, Zn, Pb, Cr, Cd, As, Ni in roots, stem and leaves, which were 0.01 ~ 1.6 times of those grown in soil.CITATION:Yibin, Z, Lianbi, Z, Bin, P and Youhong, Z, 2012. This paper , which describes mining methods and practices at the Johnson Camp copper -zinc mine , Coronado Copper & Zinc Co. , Cochise County , Ariz . , is one of a series being prepared by the Bureau of Mines on mining methods , practices , and costs in various mining districts of the United States . Johnson Camp is in the eastern foothills of the Little Dragoon Mountains in secs . 23 , 24 , 25 , and 26 , T. 15 S. , R. 22 E. ( fig . 1 ) . The mining property is in the low, rolling foothills at an altitude of slightly over 5,000 feet above sea level ( fig . 2 ) . The area is covered with scattered grass and small desert shrubs . The climate is mild , with hot summers and mild winters . The average annual precipitation is about 12 inches . The nearest surface water is the San Pedro River , some 12 miles west of the mine . The property is owned by the Coronado Copper & Zinc Co. , Los Angeles , Calif . This report gives a brief history of the property , describes the general geology of the area and of the ore deposits , outlines the methods of prospecting and exploration , and gives the methods of sampling and of estimating ore reserves . Development and stoping methods are explained . Underground transportation , ventilation , mine drainage , and safety measures also are described . The last section gives a brief description of the milling practice .

This? Bureau of Mines paper discusses the corporate structure dynamics, methods of financing, and financial assessment approaches that should be utilized to evaluate the economic health of the coal industry. It suggests rates of return and other measures of corporate economies necessary to attract capital required to finance emerging coal demand, plus impact of coal sales to total revenues. The study illuminates the activities of 30 selected coal-producing companies, including their subsidiaries or affiliates, that were responsible for approximately 60 percent of the total U.S. production in 1974. The selected firms are not all primary coal producers; many of the larger producer's are classified by the financial institutions as petroleum, metal, and steel producers, public utilities, or chemical industries. The bituminous coal industry is highly competitive as to price, service, and quality of pronuct and is subject to competition from other noncoal energy sources. The top 15 bituminous coal-producing companies mined about 46.6 per-cent of the Nation's total production in 1974, and the balance of approximately 3,885 companies were responsible for the rest of the production. Thus, the U.S. bituminous coal industry is not an oligopoly. Today, about 65 percent of the Nation's total coal production is consumed by electric power utilities and 26 percent by steel, space heating, and other industries; the balance of 9 percent is exported.

The Ouachita, Ozark-St. Francis, and Mark Twain National Forests are located within the Ozark and the Ouachita Mountains regions of southern Missouri, central and northern Arkansas, and eastern Oklahoma- an area generally referred to as the Ozark-Ouachita or Interior Highlands. These national forests share many similarities in geography, biotic resources, and areas of shared public, market, and user interests. The three national forests have joined together to evaluate the natural resources within the Highlands and to study the impacts of the forests on local and regional economies and on the people who use these national forests and their resources. Other federal, state, and local government agencies and universities have joined with the Forest Service in this project, broadening the assessment area beyond the national forest boundaries to include 107 counties in Arkansas, Missouri, and Oklahoma. The diverse, resource-related data for the as- sessment area address social, economic, terrestrial, and aquatic issues and conditions throughout the Highlands. The assessment report currently is being developed by the Forest Service and will include an accoMpanying CD-ROM. The Ozark-Ouachita Highlands assessment has provided a forum for minerals- and geology-related resources, industries, social significance, and potential to be profiled and discussed along with other critical assessment resources. The state geological agencies in Arkansas, Missouri, and Oklahoma were active contributors to this effort. Their reports and other key data bases developed and used for the minerals sections of the published assessment report will be available either as a supplemental CD-ROM or on the Internet. Updated information on the progress of the assessment report can be found at the Ouachita National Forest Website, at <http://www.fs.fed.us/oonf/ouachita.htm>. This will also include a matrix displaying the minerals in the assessment area, their occurrence by assessment-area counties, and a potential ranking, as well as information on interesting geologic features. The state and federal reports, resources, and data bases, have helped answer key questions concerning mineral resources and related issues in the Highlands:

In 1992, the Bureau of Mines evaluated mineral resources of the 34,043-hectare Caribou City and 41,943-hectare Stump Creek study areas in southeastern Idaho. No resources were delineated. The areas had been proposed for wilderness. Rocks underlying the study area are part of the Idaho-Wyoming Thrust Belt. At Caribou Mountain they have been intruded by diorite-monzodiorite. Where the intrusive rocks contact calcareous members of the thrust belt, skarn bodies have formed that host metal deposits. Gold, both placer and lode, occurs in the Caribou City area, and salt occurs in the Stump Creek area. Production records show 73.5 kg (2,363 ounces) of placer gold were produced; however, field studies indicate more than 2,000 kg (67,000 ounces) probably were recovered. Minor amounts of lode gold, silver, and copper were recovered from the hard rock mines. Production of salt from the Stump Creek study area in the 1860&apos;s was used by emigrants on the Oregon trail and also shipped to various mining districts for use in silver recovery. Oil and gas were drilled for, but all holes are plugged and abandoned. There are no current leases. Examined workings consisted of 25 adits, 3 shafts, 50 prospect pits, and extensive placer workings all in the northern tip of the Caribou City area, Current BLM records show 168 placer and 146 lode claims; 14 claims are patented.

SINCE the excellent studies of metal powder compaction executed by Kamm, Steinberg, and Wulff, no work on the subject has appeared in the technical literature. Kamm et al. were the first to investigate quantitatively the distribution of density in a powder compact, as a function of pressure, height and diameter of the die, powder particle size, etc. For this purpose they devised a very ingenious method. They inserted a thin lead grid into a die and then filled the die with powder. During cold pressing, the lead grid -moved downward. Due to its deformability it followed closely the downward descent of the adjacent powder. The die was then radiographed and, from the deformations of the grid openings measured on the radiographs, the density in the vicinity of each opening was evaluated. Their findings led them to the conclusion that the friction on the side walls of the die is a major controlling factor of the density distribution inside the cold pressed powder compacts. However, it is difficult to conduct tests similar to those of Kamm, Steinberg, and Wulff in a processing plant laboratory, which usually lacks the necessary expensive radiographic equipment. The purpose of this note is to describe a method which makes it possible to determine the density distribution in green powder compacts with the same accuracy as the lead-grid method but which is far simpler and faster and requires only standard laboratory equipment. Instead of using a lead grid, the hardness at selected points of the sectioned compact is determined. If the relationship between hardness and density is known the density distribution is readily obtained. This relationship is easily found from measuring hardness and densities of thin compacts. In such compacts the density, for all practical purposes, is constant throughout. The method was tested on a Plast nickel powder, grade FlA-A20, kindly supplied by Plast Metals Co. Thin compacts (height to diameter ratio 0.2) were pressed in a single action cylindrica1 die at various pressures. The density of the compacts was determined by weighing and by measuring the height and diameter with a micrometer. Subsequently the Rh hardness was determined. Up to ten readings were taken on each specimen. The difference in hardness readings on each compact was never greater than three corresponding to about 0.1 g per cu cm uncertainty in density. By varying the compaction pressure of the samples, a whole scale of densities was obtained allowing construction of a set of density-hardness calibration curves. To test the method several compacts of different height were pressed under varying pressures. Die walls were always well lubricated. After pressing, the compacts were mounted in bakelite and halved by grinding, and hardness readings taken along the diameters of the specimens. The distance between adjacent indentations was about 2.5 mm. After hardness readings were translated into densities, contour maps of densities of the compacts were prepared. One of them is reproduced in Fig. 1. The areas encompassed by the curves are labeled with numbers representing the density in g per cu cm of those regions. In Fig. 2 the same results are re-plotted to emphasize the radial density changes at various depths. The results thus obtained confirm the findings of Kamm, Steinberg, and Wulff kentioned previously. They are recapitulated here briefly. 1—The densest part of a compact pressed from one side is at the outer circumference at the top and the least dense part at the bottom, at the outer circumference. Figs. 1 and 2 show this clearly. 2—The density near the cylindrical surfaces of the compact decreases uniformly with height from top to bottom. 3—The density variation increases with the height to diameter ratio. A mineral purvey of the Granite Chief RARE II area (A5-261), covering about 23,400 acres (9,470 ha) of Tahoe National Forest and the Like Tahoe Management Unit, was conducted by the U.S. Bureau of Mines and the U.S. Geological Survey in 1979 and 1980 (fig. 1). The investigation by the Bureau of Mines indicates that the area has a low potential for mineral resources. Samples taken from prospect pits and favorable outcrops indicate no minable quantities of precious or base metals. Placer deposits are too small and low grade to be considered a resource.

In Sarcheshmeh Copper Complex, a molybdenite floatation concentrate was produced by selective removal of copper impurities with 7 stages of cleaner floatation banks, that contains around 1% copper and 54.5% molybdenum. Mineralogical studies, physical and chemical characterizations showed that the sample contained 91% molybdenite (MoS2), 2.6% chalcopyrite (CuFeS2), 0.2%Covellite (CuS), 1.6% pyrite (FeS2) and 4.6% other nonmetallic impurities. In the present study, the removal of the copper sulfide was investigated by ferric chloride leaching for achieving a molybdenite concentrate with copper content less than 0.3%. Therefore, the application of response surface methodology (RSM) for modeling and optimization of the influence of three control parameters including ferric chloride (FeCl3) dosage, reaction temperature and reaction time, each varying in five levels, were considered, and the mathematical model for prediction of %Cu removal from molybdenite concentrate was derived. This study showed that RSM could effectively be applied for the modeling of ferric chloride leaching, and finding an economical optimum condition to achieve maximum de-coppering efficiency while consuming minimum leaching reagents. The optimum dissolution conditions to maximize Cu extraction were 200 kg/t for ferric chloride dosage, 120 min for reaction time and 80 °C for reaction temperature with a prediction of 83.20% Cu dissolution. This paper describes results obtained in a test program performed with new equipment, called Mini Pilot Plant, manufactured by Canadian Process Technologies. This equipment was acquired by CVRD aiming at testing flotation circuits, in a continuous closed configuration, with samples obtained from drill cores. Success of this goal would allow CVRD to establish the metallurgical performance of mineral deposits with more confidence in comparison to Locked Cycle Tests (LCT). This paper discusses the importance of assessing the ore variability and compares results obtained in LCTs and Mini Pilot Plant. Results suggest that more reliable data is obtained in MPP test.

This user&apos;s manual covers a set of 5 computer codes which were generated during development of a simulation of deep ocean mining operational economics. Table 1.1 provides a summary of these codes, and a more thorough description of each follows, In addition to the descriptions in this user&apos;s manual, internal documentation is provided throughout each code, except for the very simple ones, for ease of understanding or possible modification. The two major codes are MINER, which performs the deep ocean mining system operational simulation, and MSWEEP, which calculates the sweep and feed efficiencies for a set of collector paths generated by MINER. The standard operating procedure is to input the system and operating parameters to MINER, which computes a set of collector paths automatically and stores the information in the fife PATH.DAT. MSWEEP subsequently retrieves the collector path data in PATH.DAT, and uses it to calculate sweep and feed efficiency. Separating MINER and MSWEEP allows parmetric execution of MSWEEP without recomputing the collector paths with MINER. PIPEST, RESP, and OBSTCL are special-purpose codes described in more detail in the following documentation.

"A successful procedure for the recovery of a valuable product from weathered tank-bottom settlings has been developed in the laboratories of the Bureau of lines and used in a field pilot plant. These heavy emulsion settlings, generally regarded by the industry as waste material, have usually been drained into open pits or storage ponds and eventually destroyed.Laboratory examination of the waste material shows it to consist essentially of a ""water-in-oil"" emulsion containing a considerable volume of congealed ""paraffin."" This paraffin is mainly high-melting-point wax; known in the industry as microcrystalline wax, for which there is an increasing demand.Because of the physical properties of this wax, the tank-bottom settlings are not responsive to conventional methods used for demulsifying ordinary crude-oil emulsions.The work upon which this report is based was conducted by the Bureau of Mines in cooperation with -the Kansas State. Board of Health and with special cooperative agreements-with the Cities Service Oil Co, Bartlesville, Okla., and the Bareco Oil Co,. Barnsdall, Okla. The paper shares programs that presently use the CDC PLATO System to train individuals in industry. A short history of PLATO development; as a training system is presented with reflection on the major training trends being used to improve training effectiveness. A discussion is offered to describe the benefits of using a system for individualizing instruction. An introduction; is offered showing how one can recognize&apos; individual differences, with an explanation of how the strengths of a computer are used to deliver and manage the training. Simulations of hazardous processes are shown to be one of the most effective uses of the computer for training.

"An AG/SAG mill was commissioned at the Brunswick mine concentrator in October 1998. This paper discusses the original shell top hat liner design for the bi-directional AG/SAG mill, observed liner wear, subsequent liner design modifications, and benefits.The original liners were chrome-moly steel Norsteel with rubber grates and rubber-lined pulp lifters. The design was based on experiences of other AG/SAG mills and recommendations by the liner supplier, Norcast. Liner design modifications were made in an iterative fashion after observing the wear rate profile of the liners; over ten liner sets were implemented. Shell liner design improvements were supported by a design of experiments approach in conjunction with discrete element method (DEM) charge motion simulations. Design optimization took into account lining costs and impacts on operating performance. The team approach to the liner design improvements process is described with emphasis on the application of the design of experiments. The liner wear history and mill operating performance are presented."
