REGARDLESS of the degree of purification effected during the electrorefining of copper, a danger of re-introducing impurities exists in the operation of melting and casting of the refined copper. Logically only a combination of the purification and casting operation would remedy the situation. A well-known method of metal purification is the "Gross"-type process, whereby a volatile halide is produced, purified, and decomposed.' In the present case, this concept was used to remove the impurities rather than to form possible volatile copper halides. The object was to produce volatile halides of the impurities present and distill these away, leaving high-purity copper. It is interesting to note that such techniques are used in spectrographic procedures in order to shorten exposure time and enhance the density of impurity lines.' In the present investigation, copper hydroxy fluoride was used, since the temperature of decomposition of copper hydroxy fluoride and the melting point of copper nearly coincide. The fluorine released by the thermal decomposition of copper hydroxy fluoride purges the molten copper. Copper hydroxy fluoride was prepared by dissolving high-purity copper in nitric acid and adding hydrofluoric acid and ammonium hydroxide in the required proportions. The melt was made in a high-purity graphite crucible heated by an induction furnace. Trial experiments showed that impurities can be introduced from the crucible material. Therefore, preceding each cast, the crucible itself was cleaned by decomposing copper hydroxy fluoride and discarding the residual copper. This machine is an improvement on the well-known endless travelling belt used for dressing slimes in many mills; the chief point of difference, and constituting the essential advantage of the present over the old form, is the application to the machine of a secondary agitating or shaking motion, in addition to the ordinary progressive motion of- the belt. In the machine as heretofore made, the inclined belt or apron moved slowly up against a thin stream of water and ore, depositing the concentrations carried over in a tank placed below, through which the belt travelled, of course, in a reversed position. By reference to the accompanying drawings, it will be seen that in this main principle the new modification does not differ materially; but the means by which it is carried out are essentially different. NONMETALLIC minerals (excluding fuels) arid their primary products produced annual in the United States have a value in excess of one billion dollars, or more than that of the metals, yet the lack of expert knowledge of some of the fundamental technical and economic aspects of this most important and complicated business is astonishing. This paper will deal with the economics of this non- metallic mineral field-the business of making money from producing these minerals. The incentive behind all business activity in a capitalistic economy is to make money-to plan so that each dollar invested in property, plant, equipment, services, and so on will return more than a dollar plus simple interest. Of course, business has social, civic, and national duties and responsibilities, but the fulfillment of these is largely dependent upon financial success.

IN a year of sober reflection and stocktaking after the mineral-squandering spree of World War II, the role that beneficiation of low-grade must henceforth play in American mineral industry has become unmistakable. From the volume of research and development progress in mineral engineering during 1946, mineral dressers evidently have ample resoluteness to meet the challenge. Perhaps ,the most conspicuous trend of the year was the renascence of interest in gravity concentrating methods and more serious effort than ever before to make them effective in finer size ranges down to 200 mesh. This has been forced by the problem in iron ores where the low value of the product will not support a high flotation reagent cost, however good flotation pilot plant results may have been and however well the acute problem of variable feed may be met. The race is on between rabbit flotation and tortoise gravity methods and a surprising amount of betting money is being laid on the tortoise which already is showing previously unsuspected talent for speed. Mostly, however, a wait-and-see attitude prevails during the present preliminary heats. As evidence of the latter, two magnetic plants are now on the boards for magnetic taconites on the eastern Mesabi to establish a reprieve against the time when nonmagnetic taconites must be addressed. Incidentally, these operations will force the blast-furnace issue on preparation of fine material since a minus-100-mesh grind is contemplated.

FEW subjects have attracted the attention of metallurgists more than oxygen in steel. From the days of Mushet and Ledebui interest in this subject has been increasing, and as additional knowledge has become available, the problem has naturally grown more complex. Instead of using the simple term "oxygen" we now distinguish between iron oxide, silicates of various kinds, oxysulfides, oxygen as gas and oxygen in solid solution in steel. There are five general methods for determining oxides in steel: hydrogen reduction; vacuum fusion; various wet-extraction methods, including electrolytic methods; methods depending on volatilization of the iron away from the oxides; and metallographic methods. For oxygen in solid steel each of these methods has both advantages and disadvantages. The hydrogen-reduction method is of no use on steels above about 0.20 per cent. carbon; 1 furthermore, it gives only FeO and possibly some MnO. The vacuum-fusion method2 is expensive and gives total oxygen, with the exception of some A1203, and does not differentiate between the various oxides in which the oxygen exists. Most of the wet-extraction methods3 give only the more insoluble oxides SiO2 and A1203, though the iodine method gives MnO to an uncertain degree (information that may be more misleading then no information

Investigation of the initiation and propagation of ductile failure in OFHC copper was undertaken to determine the role of nonmetallic inclusions. The effect of inclusion initiated voids on the formation of the internal cavity and the final shear separation was studied by metallographic eranzination of strained test pieces. A strain anneal technique was used to enlarge the voids under uniaxial stress conditions to elinzinate triaxial stress effects. Measurements of void size us stress and strain were made to show the point at which void im'tiation begins and becomes an important factor in the deformation process. The work of separation of copper-cuprous oxide was determined to attempt to correlate the breakdown of the matrix inclusion interface with void initiation and propagation. The zloid shape and position relative to the tensile axis suggested an interface breakdown mechanisnz of initiation. Evidence is presented that shows a basic similarity between the central cavity propagation and the 45-deg shear portions of the failure. DUCTILE fracture has been studied by a number of workers1-lo and attention drawn to the importance of hard second phase particles in the initiation of the failure. Holes formed at the matrix-particle interface can elongate by plastic deformation and then subsequently expand sideways to link up and produce a major crack. This is usually observed first in the center of the macroscopically necked region of a test-piece where the hydrostatic stresses are at a maximum. As the crack spreads sideways towards the free surface of the specimen, well defined shear zones develop from the crack tip and the final separation is along a direction at approximately 45 deg to the stress axis. This shear failure may also be associated with voids formed adjacent to second phase particles. In this way a cup and cone type fracture is produced. The stage at which separation takes place between particles and the surrounding matrix has not been clearly identified. In addition, although researchers have dealt with anisotropy of tensile behavior" as a result of material fabrication variables, not much is known about the microstructural features of aniso-tropic behavior. In the present work evidence on these points is presented in relation to the behavior of copper containing second phase particles of cuprous oxide. I. MATERIALS AND PROCEDURES EMPLOYED The material used was +-in. diam or 2-in. sq cold-drawn OFHC copper bar which contained 0.6 pct by volume of cuprous oxide inclusions. SMITH, Member AIME, is Senior Lecturer, Department of Metallurgy, University of Cambridge. Manuscript submitted June 20, 1967. IMD size from approximately 1 to 6 p in length and 1 to 4 p in width. The shape was generally slightly ovoid. Tensile tests were made on specimens having a gage length of 2.5 cm and diameter of 0.643 cm. Metallographic examination was carried out by sectioning deformed and fractured specimens; in addition fracture surfaces were examined optically and with a scanning electron microscope. Some measurements of the work of separation between copper and cuprous oxide were made, using a sessile drop technique which was a modification of that used by Kingery and umenick." The best metallographic results were obtained by using a vibratory polisher, which minimized smearing of the surface. 11. RESULTS A) Initial Experiments. Specimens from the +-in. diam rod were annealed for 2 hr at 650°C in uacuo, at which temperature complete recrystallization occurred without any change in the form of the inclusion. They were then fractured at temperatures from -190" to 600°C. Cup and cone fractures were obtained at all temperatures from -196" to 400°C. With increase in temperature there was, however, a continuous increase in the extent of the central transverse area and a corresponding decrease in the shear portion of the fracture. Above 400°C, the fractures became intergranular. Sections of specimens tested below 400°C revealed extensive small voids which were always associated with inclusions. However, the voids only reached dimensions greater than the inclusion size in the region of the macroscopic neck, where they were many times longer. Lateral expansion was found only near the fracture surface of the test pieces. ONE possible method for the separation of hafnium from zirconium is by the vapor phase oxidation of the purified mixed chlorides. An important factor for success depends on the difference in free energies of the following reactions: ZrCl(g) + O2 = ZrO2(s) + 2C12 [1] HfCl4(g) + O2 = HfO2(s) + 2C12. [2] Prakash and Sundaram1 have calculated these values from certain data and carried out experimental work with partial success. However, their free energy values for reaction 2 diverge rather widely from other data which are presented here. The possibility of successful separation is briefly considered in the light of these alternative values. Table I shows the free energy values (?F°) for reactions 1 and 2 derived from the recent compilation of data on oxides and chlorides by Glassner.2 The corresponding values of Prakash and Sundaram for the same temperatures are also shown. The alternative values to those of Prakash and Sundaram for reaction 2 are substantially confirmed by the data of Kubaschewski and Evans" and Cough-lin' on heats of formation, entropies, and heats of vaporization. In spite of the considerable uncertainty in the hafnium data it is reasonable to suppose that the oxide-chloride free energy difference for two such chemically similar elements would not be very far apart. These figures indicate clearly that the oxidation of hafnium chloride is appreciable at all temperatures. Nevertheless, there is a significant difference between the values for reactions 1 and 2

In this paper a heterogeneous carbonate reservoir is considered as a succession of layers of formations of radically different porosities, permeabilities, water saturations, and rock matrix types; i.e., the heterogeneity is vertical rather than radial to the wellbore. Presumably each layer is more or less homogeneous. To determine the "net oil in place" in this reservoir it is desirable to know the porosity and water saturation of each layer. In addition, the section must be subdivided into that which will produce oil, that which will produce water, and that which will produce little or nothing. In numerous wells drilled in these reservoirs radioactivity surveys, guard electrode surveys, and caliper surveys have been made. These logs have been compared with core analysis data, when available, and the analysis of the surveys compared with production data. This study, still in progress, is intended to provide improved analytical techniques if such are possible. This paper is a progress report on the work. DETERMINATION OF POROSITY The neutron-gamma log has long been recognized as a measure of hydrogen concentration.1,2,3 In reservoirs that are free of clay, shale, or other hydrogen containing matrices, it has been accepted as a measure of porosity.4,5 Empirical methods to relate relative neu-tron-gamma intensity to porosity are often employed." To provide a more precise determination of porosity from the neutron-gamma log each instrument is calibrated immediately prior to each survey by a method which refers all tools to a hydrogenous cylinder. To insure stability a calibration check is made after each survey. These calibration records are printed as an integral part of the log that is recorded in standard counts per second. A detailed description of the calibration procedure is available in the literature.' The procedure employed insures that each Survey is numerically reproducible within the limits of statistical variation. To relate the standard neutron counts per second to porosity and hole size, records were made in test wells constructed of blocks of limestone. The porosities of the blocks were accurately measured and the blocks completely saturated with fresh water. Fig. 1 presents some of the results obtained in these test wells.' The lines shown in Fig. 1 were obtained by deriving an empirical equation relating the 11 points shown so that the relationship may be projected to larger and smaller hole sizes. A detailed description of the tool is available in the literature.' Field tests indicate that the tool is adjacent to the wall of the hole most of the time when the surveys are made in uncased holes drilled with saline muds. In this circumstance porosity may be calculated from Fig. 1 if the hole size is known. When fresh muds that form thick mud cakes are employed, the centralizing effect of the mud cake must be considered and the porosity determination is less reliable. In cased holes the combined effect of variations in hole diameter and the unknown eccentricity of the casing in the hole may make porosity determinations extremely unreliable. INTRODUCTION Tuff is being considered as a possible geologic median for the underground storage of commercial high level radioactive wastes by the Department of Energy (DOE). DOE has the responsibility for developing or improving the technology fir safely and permanently isolating these wastes. DOE programs must satisfy requirements established by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) for the licensing and regulating of these storage facilities (NRC 1981). Pertinent draft NRC requirements are: 1) releases of radioactivity to the environment must be within prescribed limits and 2) emplaced canisters containing wastes must be retrievable up to 50 years following emplacement. High level radioactive wastes produce heat in storage and it is essential that the thermal/mechanical/hydrological response of the host rock will not significantly degrade either the structural performance o£ the repository or the ability of the natural or engineered barriers to retard radionuclide migration. The Nevada Nuclear Waste Storage Investigations (NNWSI) was established by DOE to evaluate the suitability of disposing of high level nuclear wastes on or near the Nevada Test Site (NTS) (NNWSI 1980). NNWSI has focused exploration and site evaluation on the tuffs of Yucca Mountain. Field testing is essential to support site characterization and repository design efforts. Preliminary studies have been conducted indicating that tuffs in G-tunnel on the NIS contain welded and nonwelded tuffs that have similar properties to those in Yucca Mountain. Thus, field testing can be accelerated. This paper discusses the issues supporting the planned field experiments in G-tunnel. Issues not related to rock mechanics are not included.

The structure of silicon surfaces, thermally oxi&zed in dry oxygen and in steam, was studied using the electron microscope. It was found that the structure on the original (etched) surface is retained at the outer surface of the oxide, whereas the oxide-silicon interface is smoothed out considerably. This supports the idea that, both in oxygen and in steam, the oxidation reaction occurs at the oxide-silicon interface. Mechanical damage of the original silicon surface affects the rate of oxidation. It also changes the chemical properties of the oxide, as shown by the enhanced rate of etching in buffered HF at the locations of damage. However, the oxide at the originally damaged surfaces still exhibits a high electrical breakdown strength. Exposure of thermal oxides to P205 or BzOs vapor, which will yieldphospho- or borosilicate layers, results in complete annihilation of all fine structure on the surface. Reaction of silicon with C02 gives a surface film which probably does not consist of pure SiO,. THERMAL oxidation of silicon yields uniform and strongly adhering oxide films which are normally amorphous and continuous. Contamination and surface imperfections have been reported to cause local crystallization and the formation of pinholes."' The parabolic-rate law of film growth observed by several workers for the oxidation both in steam and in dry oxygen at higher temperatures suggests that diffusion of one or more reactants through the oxide is the rate-deter mining step. One of the dif-fusants is an oxygen species and oxide is continuously formed at the oxide-silicon interface. This was concluded for high-pressure steam oxidation by Ligenza and spitzer5 from an infrared-absorption study of the isotopic exchange of oxygen. Jorgensen arrived at the same conclusion for the oxidation in dry oxygen by measuring during oxidation the resistance change between silicon and a porous platinum marker electrode in the oxide. Recently, Pliskin and Gnall' reported similar conclusions concerning the growth mechanism from controlled etch studies using a phosphosilicate marker. The work communicated in the present paper was aimed at studying oxide growth on locally damaged silicon substrates and relating it to the chemical behavior and electrical breakdown properties of the films. Since etched and oxidized silicon surfaces normally appear to be very smooth when examined by optical microscopy except for some occasional pits, it was decided to use the electron microscope as a tool. In this way, the detection of surface roughness and damage on a scale comparable to or smaller than the thickness of the film is possible. Also, the microstructure of the original substrate surface constitutes a built-in marker which represents a minimum of perturbation to the growing oxide layer, and no foreign material is introduced. Thus information on surface reactions and additional evidence on the location of oxide formation in steam and in oxygen could be obtained. EXPERIMENTAL Electron micrographs7 were obtained using a Philips EM100 electron microscope. Collodion surface replication was used since this is a nondestructive technique and thus permits replicating the same surface at different stages of processing. In order to establish the effect of different treatments it was found essential to make successive observations of the same area by using a reference point. Reference points were conveniently provided by scribing a small v mark on the original surface with a silicon carbide tip. This procedure yields damaged and damage-free areas near the reference point. Upon replication, the samples were thoroughly cleaned before subjecting them to the next process step. Mechanically lapped silicon wafers (Dow-Corning, 100 ohm-cm p-type, cut perpendicular to the (111) direction) were chemically polished in a rotating beaker with a mixture of 1 part HF (48 pct), 2 parts glacial acetic acid, and 3 parts HNO3 (70 pct) by volume. This procedure yields a smooth surface with a faint "orange peel'' structure due to a "ripple" less than 20002i deep. Oxidation in steam or oxygen was carried out in an Electroglas tube furnace. Steam oxidations were always preceded and followed by a brief exposure to oxygen at the same temperattre. The thicknesses of the oxide films under 3000A were determined with a Rudolph Model 436-2003 ellipsometer,' whereas those over 3000A were measured using the VAMFO technique. The production of petroleum in Rumania in 1932 totaled 52,560,000 bbl., an increase of 6.8 per cent over 1931. The average daily production rose from 123,000 bbl. at the beginning of the year to 173,000 bbl. at the end of the year, the production in the Gura-Ocnitzei field rising from 38,800 to 80,700 bbl. per day. This increase was due to competitive development during which time the percentage of total production of the various operating companies remained practically unchanged. Chief producers were: Concordia, 30.3 per cent; Unirea, 21.6; Romano-Americana, 13.5; Steaua Romana, 8.3. Boldesti, where production of the previous year was practically doubled, would have produced far greater quantities were it not for the fact that both Astra Romana and Romano-Americana curtailed drilling operations. Of the total daily production of 21,800 bbl. a day, the Astra Romana, Steaua Romana and Romana Americana, produced respectively 67, 25 and 8 per cent. The Moreni field showed a sudden drop in production from the preceding year, due primarily to reduced drilling activities. Its production of only 21,000 bbl. a day removes it from first position for the first time in many years. All the other fields showed a decrease in production, except Ochiuri, 3 miles west of Gura-Ocnitzei, and Ceptura, 12 miles east of Boldesti. Drilling1 During the first nine months of 1932, 116 wells were completed, 8 of which were dry holes. The Meotian (lower Pliocene) is the producing horizon in 73, the Dacian (upper Pliocene) in 31, and the Oligocene in 4 of the completed wells. Three of the Oligocene wells were drilled in the Bacau district and one at Grausor, near Campina. In addition, 47 wells were drilling on Oct. 1,1932. Of the total completions and drilling wells, 92 per cent employed rotary for a footage of 98.5 per cent of the total drilled. Power for rotary drilling was furnished to 105 wells by steam, to 38 by electricity, and to one by gasoline.

MINING men in general- are a roving lot but not so Selwyn G. Blaylock. Immediately after graduation from McGill in 1899 he went to the Trail smelter and he is there today though he spent three or four years of his early professional life at other British Columbia mining centers. Either he sensed the great possibilities of the company of which he is now vice-president and general manager, or it sensed his; more probably both. Certainly the association was a happy and fortunate one.

OPINION seems widely divergent as to where we stand with respect to future mineral supply. From some quarters we hear that the United States is about to become a "have-not" nation and about to experience the evil consequences such a situation would entail. Others claim that we are still a treasure house of stored-up mineral wealth, the surface of which barely has been scratched. The data to be presented here support the conclusion that neither of these viewpoints is correct and that we are far from exhaustion of those mineral resources that are basic to our industrial economy. However, exhaustion is well advanced in a number of important subsidiary minerals so that we can no longer drift along with the easy-going philosophy that the earth will provide. The time has come when we must recognize the true situation and do something about it.

Wells based his "Food. of the Gods," namely that growth does not and cannot take place smoothly and steadily, but occurs in a series of bursts and intermissions: "It is as if every living thing has to accumulate force to grow, grows with vigor only for a time, and then has to wait for a space before it can go on growing again."

Catalytic purifiers are widely used as exhaust treatment devices on diesel equipment in confined spaces. The paper summarizes some studies carried out at the University of Lulea on diesel exhaust purifiers. The main purpose has been to elucidate important chemical activities of catalysts useful for the improvement of their effect. The effects of platinum catalysts on exhaust constituents such as carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides, unburned gaseous hydrocarbons, and polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons are discussed. Also pointed out are the great differences in catalyst activity and advantages/disadvantages associated with the catalysts.

Coal mining is a hazardous occupation, but tremendous progress has been made in reducing accidental injuries and deaths in the mines. Let us take a look at the hazards in coal mining and the accident record. COAL MINE SAFETY TODAY Underground coal mining creates underground open areas, rooms, and haulageways. The roof (top) and ribs (sides) become highly stressed, and because coal and slate are very weak in tension or compression they frequently fail and fall from the roof and ribs unexpectedly. This is the most hazardous condition miners must cope with underground, and it has consistently produced the greatest number of fatal injuries in the coal mining industry. Only very sophisticated equipment, but which is not yet practical for use underground, is able to detect the buildup of stresses that may eventually lead to a roof or rib fall. Today's miner still looks for fresh cracks in the roof or rib, listens for the "drummy" sound, and feels vibrations from loose material in the roof, when tapped with a sounding stick, in order to find material which may fall. Once located, it is barred down, but if this is not possible, it is then secured to prevent it from falling. The next great& hazard is the equipment used to mine or haul coal. It is large, heavy, reacts quickly to its controls and is operated in con- fined areas with low lighting levels. The record of the last few years shows that fatalities attributable to mining and hauling equipment are about equally divided. Thorough training as part of a complete safety program is necessary to teach employees the hazards of loose roof, rib, and machine operation in order that they can work in the safest way possible. Unless there is such a program, the trade is learned by trial and error with a resulting tragic.
