"Titanium aluminides are structural intermetallics which offer an attractive combination of high temperature strength and light weight. For such properties, these intermetallic alloys have become front-runners in replacing nickel-based superalloys used for several high temperature applications. These alloys are produced from metallic titanium, aluminum and master alloys involving an expensive and difficult process. A low cost alternative to current industrial production method is the new modified aluminothermic process which directly reduces titanium oxide (TiO2) to titanium aluminides. Nevertheless, this process has itself significant challenges in achieving alloys free of oxide inclusions; the close densities of the slag and the titanium aluminides makes slag/molten metal separation a challenging task. Usually, the alloy produced requires a second refining step. In this study, thermodynamic calculations based on CALPHAD method were performed to determine the solidification path and an attempt has been made to develop a criterion to increase the density deference between the slag and the alloy by alloying with appropriate elements. Furthermore, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and x-ray diffraction (XRD) techniques were utilized to examine the microstructure and phase selection of three Ti-Al alloys produced by the aluminothermic reaction, including the as-cast, refined in a controlled atmosphere and inert-gas-refined alloys. The composition range of the alloys studied was restricted to the a2-Ti3Al + ?-TiAl phase field (Ti-30Al) in the binary Ti-Al phase diagram leading to a lamellar structure with different complex intermetallics as shown in Figure 1.INTRODUCTIONTiAl based alloys are promising structural materials for high temperature aerospace and automotive applications. This is due to some attractive properties such as low density, high specific strength, high specific stiffness and high temperature strength retention (Wen-bin, Xue-wen, Hong-fei, & Yong-feng, 2011). These alloys have become leading candidates to replace Ni-based super alloys in gas turbine engines. Replacement of Ni-based super alloy parts with titanium aluminides is expected to reduce the structural weight of high performance gas turbine engines by as much as 20–30% (Kothari, Radhakrishnan, Sudarshan, & Wereley, 2012)."

"INTRODUCTIONThis article documents the current non-metallic mineral s resources of Manitoba (Fig. I), and makes comparisons with currently producing deposits in North America and elsewhere in the world. Industrial minerals may lack the glamour of gold, silver or the base metals, but they contributed approximately 20070 to the value of Manitoba's raw materials, and even out-performed our petroleum industry, except during the oil boom of the early eighties (Fig. 2). Values per tonne of industrial commodities can be as high or higher than for base metal ores. Commodity prices (Canadian), listed in the February 1988 issue of Industrial Minerals magazine, are: talc $202.00 - $306.00, sillimanite $427.00; kaolin $69.00 - $270.00; garnet $175.00 - $250.00; and mica $405.00 - $540.00. The prices are converted to Canadian dollars using the prevailing exchange rates of February I, 1988. Some commodities are not sold by weight. Building stone, for example, is sold by the cubic foot. An average rough granite block, 4 ft by 4 ft by 8 ft, is worth approximately $2000 sitting on the quarry 1100r in southeastern Manitoba (Fig. 3).Thus, not all rocks that do not contain sulphides are worthless. Some may be extracted more profitably than either the base or precious-metal bearing varieties.Industrial Mineral CommoditiesThe commodities available in Manitoba are described in two categories: (1) those already in production that have additional development or expansion potential, and (2) those not in production logical information available at this time.Current Industrial Mineral ProductionThe commodities described herein are currently in commercial production in Manitoba (Fig. 4). On the basis of research of relations among the market participants the analytical model has been created which connects the price of industrial good at stock exchange with volume of sales and the stock of the sellers and buyers, Also a model was developed for assessment of these parameters of the market status by the actually fixed stock exchange and general market indicators. The composition of these models made it possible to create reliable system of short-term price forecasting for commodities or base metals up to one quarter ahead. Imperfectability of creation a model for reliable price forecasting by purely statistic methods (by the "black box" principle) was shown. A model of price behavior qualitative forecasting till one quarter ahead has been developed, which determines the probability of reaching in future of the given level as well as of the price maximums and minimums, Optimal values of threshold probability were determined for forecasting the future price maximums and minimums securing the maximum profit from the forecasting system application for commercial activity. The developed system of forecasting was identified for primary aluminium at the period of 1990-2003. The system was tested daily during 20 months period for speculations on 3M primary aluminium forwards at London Metal Exchange with high commercial result.

"Testwork was conducted in order to compare the effectiveness of carbon based catalysts while oxidizing a gold-bearing pyrite concentrate under atmospheric conditions. Without the use of a catalyst the oxidation of pyrite was incomplete after 96 hours, resulting in roughly 60% pyrite oxidation. Furthermore the resulting sulphate yield from unassisted pyrite oxidation ranged between 72 and 84%. It is evident that atmospheric oxidation of pyrite is not viable due to slow oxidation kinetics and high sulphuric acid production when using a ferric sulphate media without a catalyst. The effect of two different carbon based catalysts, one Lewatit® AF 5 a new microporous carbonaceous bead, and the second a granular coconut shell based activated carbon, were tested under the same oxidation conditions as the unassisted pyrite tests. After 96 hours, Lewatit® AF 5 assisted oxidation showed approximately 96% pyrite oxidation with a sulphate yield ranging between 26 and 35%, while the activated carbon assisted oxidation reached approximately 100% pyrite oxidation with a sulphate yield between 36 and 37%. Testwork indicated that not only does the addition of a carbon based catalyst greatly improve the oxidation kinetics and lead to almost complete oxidation, the sulphate yield is also drastically reduced, resulting in very high elemental sulphur yields.INTRODUCTION Pyrite is an important sulphide mineral due to its ability to contain invisible gold concentrations up to 132 g/t (Chryssoulis & Cabri, 1990). As a result, ores composed of only a small amount of pyrite still have the ability to contain high gold grades. This refractory gold cannot be accessed via conventional gold leaching processes, such as cyanidation, and additional oxidative pre-treatment is required to liberate the gold, making it more amenable to extraction (Marsden & House, 2006). Current oxidative pre-treatments do exist consisting of both pyrometallurgical and hydrometallurgical processes including high temperature and high pressure leaching within autoclaves, biological atmospheric leaching and roasting. Autoclaves are a proven process reaching desirable recoveries within approximately a 1–2 hour retention time, due to the increased temperatures and pressures, allowing for an increase in dissolved oxygen (Marsden & House, 2006). The typical reaction for pyrite oxidation within autoclaves is presented in Equations 1, 2 and 3."

"The Davis tube test has been used for many years as a laboratory method for determining the magnetic iron re-coverable from a magnetite iron orebody. This paper de-scribes a method for determining the recoverable iron from ores of the Labrador Trough type, with the usua1 flow sheet utilizing spirals followed by magnetic separation.The mechanical structure of a metamorphosed iron ore, resulting from recrystallization over long periods of time, is the basis for the laboratory method developed. Similarities between the structures of such recrystallized ores and the structure of annealed and recrystallized steel are noted.A laboratory technique to determine the size of the different grains of gangue and iron ore minerals is de-scribed and the application of this information to arrive at recommended grinding techniques and flow sheets is demonstrated. The use of the method to determine recoverable iron in such ores is compared to actual iron recovery in the pilot-plant and commercial concentrations of the same ore.The use of a specified lower limit of recoverable iron as determined by this method, in order to design open-pit limits, achieves practical results when compared to designing a pit based on an arbitrary lower limit of total soluble iron. The Ungava Iron Ore deposits are used in giving an example of the resulting pit design changes."

"A novel methodology was developed to obtain a 3D porous layer with a high aspect ratio of porosity on a titanium electrode. The porous structure allowed more active material such as hydrous ruthenium oxide to be accommodated during the fabrication of the supercapacitor, resulting in an exceptionally high capacitance per surface area. The electrode demonstrated a remarkably high capacitance of 4,800 mF/cm2. The porous layer was composed of functionalized nanoparticles of TiO2 organized in a perfect 3D hexagonal close-packed array that resulted in a highly porous 3D structure. The layer was used as a template to electrolessly deposit a thin layer of silver prior to the electrodeposition of active material. La structure poreuse permet d’utiliser une matière plus active telle que l’oxyde de ruthénium hydraté durant la fabrication du supercondensateur, ce qui se traduit par une capacité exceptionnellement élevée par surface active. La couche poreuse était composée de nanoparticules fonctionnalisées de dioxyde de titane (TiO2) organisées dans un arrangement regroupé parfaitement hexagonal en 3D, qui a engendré une structure en 3D hautement poreuse. "The Raglan Ni/Cu property is located on the Ungava Peninsula in Northern Quebec, Canada, at a latitude of61°42' and a longitude of73°40', approximately 40 km southwest of Douglas Harbor. Geological reserves are estimated at 18 million tonnes, grading 3. 1 % nickel, 0.9% copper and smaller amounts of cobalt and platinum group metals.Extensive project development has defined the concentration process, concentrator sizing, tailings and environmental management required for this project.The grinding circuit selected is a fully autogenous primary grind, with pebble crushing and a pebble mill for secondary grinding to produce a product of 80% -70 microns for flotation.The flotation circuit is a simple circuit utilizing roughing, a regrind of rougher concentrate to 80% -20 microns, two stages of column cleaning with a cleaner scavenger bank on the column tails.Concentrate handling options were thoroughly reviewed because of the pyrophoric nature of the concentrate, remote site location and long distance to downstream processing. The preferred option, currently.is to dry the concentrate at Raglan to less than l % moisture and then pneumatically handle the powder.A detailed analysis of tailings placement options, suggests filtered tailings placement to be the preferable route for the Raglan site.INTRODUCTIONThe Raglan Project, as proposed by Falconbridge Limited, will develop extensive nickel-copper deposits in the Ungava Peninsula, Quebec, Canada. The project schedule and construction conditions in the project area are demanding. The Raglan mineral deposits have been the subject of numerous studies and evaluations over the last thirty years and the Phase I 1991 pre-feasibility document includes exploration information obtained in the 1989 and 1990 drilling seasons. This review concluded that an 800,000 tonnes of ore per year mining and concentrating complex located at Katinniq could produce 20,000 tonnes per year of nickel at competitive costs."

Abstract - The West Meliadine area is underlain by structurally interleaved panels of mafic and minor ultramafic metavolcanic rocks and metasedimentary rocks that occur along the northern margin of the Neoarchean Rankin Inlet greenstone belt. Three structural and metamorphic domains are recognized: (1) the easterly Wesmeg domain; (2) the central Barracuda-Ridge domain; and (3) the westerly Peter Lake domain. The Wesmeg domain is characterized by a series of southeast-trending, north-dipping, foliation-parallel panels of greenschist facies mafic metavolcanic and metasedimentary rocks. The Barracuda-Ridge domain is comprised of greenschist to amphibolite facies mafic metavolcanic rocks that define an east-northeast-trending structural grain. The Peter Lake domain consists of amphibolite facies mafic metavolcanic rocks and minor metasedimentary rocks intruded by a monzonite pluton. West Meliadine hosts the economically significant Wesmeg gold deposits, as well as other important gold showings across the Barracuda-Ridge and Peter Lake domains. The geological setting of the Wesmeg gold deposits resembles that of a break or fault zone. The Pyke Break is a major geophysical discontinuity (>65-km strike length) and is the first-order structural control on gold mineralization at West Meliadine. It is several kilometers wide and characterized by polyphase deformation and shear zone development accompanied by lode-gold mineralization. In general, gold concentration is related to quartz and iron-carbonate veining, iron sulfides (mainly arsenopyrite and pyrrhotite), and accompanying silicate alteration minerals that overprint favorable chemical and structural traps late in the history of deformation.

The irregular history of Mg wrought products is briefly described. The temperature and strain rate dependence of microstructural evolution, flow stress and ductility of Mg alloys in hot working, are described. The flow curves rose rapidly to a peak stress which was lower as temperature T rose and strain rate e declined and above 300°C the curves extended into plateaus until failure. Clearly grains not oriented for slip undergo mechanical twinning in the initial stages (a 0.15) at all temperatures. Basal slip proceeds in suitable grains and in the twins. The stress concentrations at grain and twin boundaries lead to slip on non-basal systems and to the formation of subgrains with greater dynamic recovery (DRV) at higher T or lower e. With increasing strain, misorientation builds up resulting in dynamic recrystallization (DRX) first at twin intersections and later at grain boundaries which have become quite serrated. Even after extensive straining at high temperatures, the new grains are found mainly along the boundaries of the original grains, leaving their centers with only basal slip except when nucleation at twins leads to completion of DRX throughout a grain. Despite similar shear modulus and melting point to Al, hot mechanical forming behavior of Mg alloys differ due to differences in crystal slip systems, twinning, and second phases. Moreover, the influences on forming of alloy additions (solutes, segregation in casting, dispersoids, precipitation) and impurities are not as well catalogued as for Al. Despite the benefits from dynamic recrystallization, varied grain orientation effects, heterogeneous substructures and the resulting stress concentrations result in considerably lower ductility for Mg alloys at the same stress level as for Al materials. Application of these theories to extrusion, rolling and forging and the effects on product properties are surveyed.

A study, part of a doctoral dissertation (Matthias, 1991), was conducted during 1987 and 1988 to establish the means by which professionals assess and maintain their competence during the various stages of their careers. The study elicited responses from fifty-nine subjects representing engineering, pharmacy and medicine (twenty subjects from engineering, nineteen from pharmacy and twenty from medicine) on their perception and assessment of continuing competence. The findings revealed a wide variation of how professionals perceived their continuing competence and the means they adopted to keep current. The implications of the study are significant for adult education practice and theory building. The author strongly believes that now, more than ever, engineers must take ownership of their careers and professional development activities. While management and supervision have a key role to play, it is the engineer, who is ultimately responsible for the scope, planning and implementation of her/ his professional development needs. An example from one high technology company will illustrate these points.

"The Nechalacho rare metal deposit, located in the Northwest Territories, Canada, is currently being taken through Feasibility Study by Avalon Rare Metals Inc. QEMSCAN analysis and supplementary electron microprobe analysis were utilized to identify and quantify the mineralogy of the deposit, and determine REE distribution among the minerals. QEMSCAN mineralogy was performed to provide textural information on the mineralization, determine the variability of the ore and identify REE domains, and the liberation and association of the REE minerals. The sample matrix consists predominantly of silicate minerals. The REE minerals include allanite, monazite, synchysite, columbite, fergusonite, and bastnaesite. Zircon is present in considerable amounts and is a REE carrier. Fergusonite and zircon account for most of the HREE, and monazite, allanite, synchysite and bastnaesite the LREE. QEMSCAN mineralogical data is extremely valuable in assessing the mineralogy of the ore. The data are implemented to define the mineralogy of the ore body, support metallurgical test work, and predict recoveries and grades.INTRODUCTIONThe term rare earth elements (REE) is used to describe the 15 lanthanide elements or metals and, more recently, the metals yttrium and scandium, which display similar physical and chemical properties.Economic and potentially economic REE deposits form two main groups, a more commonly occurring “light rare earth element” (LREE) group containing lanthanum, cerium, praseodymium, neodymium, and samarium and a less commonly occurring “heavy rare earth element” (HREE) group which, in addition to the LREE, contains elevated concentrations of the more valuable REE, europium, gadolinium, terbium, dysprosium, holmium, yttrium, erbium, thulium, ytterbium, lutetium and scandium. The first group is hosted primarily by carbonatites and the second by highly alkaline (Na + K > Al) silicate igneous rocks. The LREE are produced mainly from bastnaesite, monazite, etc., while HREE are produced almost exclusively from low-grade secondary ion adsorption clay deposits in which the REE are adsorbed onto the surfaces of kaolinite and halloysite, clay minerals produced by the weathering of granite and sediments. HREE are also found in fegusonite, zircon, xenotime, etc but are not produced presently from these minerals. China is responsible for 97% of the World’s production of the REE, mainly from the giant Bayan Obo, carbonatite-related deposit and from the clay deposits mentioned above.Quantitative automated mineralogy is increasingly being applied to ore deposits. It helps users to understand and improve mineralogical parameters for geological and metallurgical purposes. Data include textural characterization, to quantification and distribution of ore and gangue minerals, liberation and association of the REE minerals. The data can be used to define mineralogical domains and predict the metallurgical response of the ore (Gunning, de Souza, & Grammatikopoulos, 2009)."

THE Bullion mine, in the famous Cariboo district of British Columbia, is situated on the left bank of the South fork of the Quesnel river, approximately three miles below the outlet of Quesnel lake. A good road leads 63 miles northeast to the property from Williams lake, the railhead on the Pacific Great Eastern railway. The mine may also be reached over good roads from Vancouver via the Fraser canyon, Ashcroft, Clinton, and the 150-mile house, a total distance of 407 miles. In the early days of placer mining on the South fork of the Quesnel, several rich bars were found. The 'pay' on one of these at the mouth of Dancing Bill gulch was followed up the gulch by a Chinese company, who proved to be the discoverers of the present Bullion mine. This Chinese company commenced working in 1884, in what was then referred to as the China pit. Although working under very primitive conditions, it is reported that, during the ten years they operated the property, they recovered in excess of $900,000 in gold. This somewhat large recovery was due to a local concentration, the result of Dancing Bill creek having meandered down that portion of the channel and washed off the overburden. In 1894, a syndicate composed largely of the Canadian Pacific Railway directorate of that time, with J. B. Hobson as their field manager, acquired the property, as the apparent magnitude of the operation was too great for the resources of the Chinese company. Mr. Hobson, during the first ten years of his regime, developed the mine into a large-scale hydraulic operation, and during that period, from 1894 to 1905, recovered approximately $1,234,000 in gold. In 1906, the property was sold to the Guggenheim Exploration Company, who retained Mr. Hobson as Manager and embarked on an extensive programme to bring in additional water. This project was never completed, however, work being suddenly abandoned in 1907 and the mine closed down. Shortly afterwards, the property was purchased by a small operator on what is believed to have been largely borrowed capital. This venture resulted in no production, but in much litigation, which eventually reached the Privy Council in 1920.

"An anisotropic constitutive model is proposed in this paper accounting for both structural anisotropy and induced anisotropic plasticity. It is assumed that the rock is composed of a matrix and of potential planes of weakness. The matrix is assumed to be linear, transversely isotropic and the plasticity is described by a non linear yield function where the parameters are deduced from the nonlinear Hoek-Brown envelopes in pre- and post-peak, and derived from the laboratory characterization. A non-associated flow rule is used with a distinction between compression and extensional stress paths, as well as the absence of volumetric strain beyond large plastic distortion.The planes of weakness are considered as known a priori or assumed to be oriented perpendicular to the direction of the current minor principal stress. An elastic-perfectly plastic behavior according to the Mohr-Coulomb criterion is assumed in the planes of weakness; while the elastic part is considered as linear and transversely isotropic.Finally, the proposed model was implemented in FLAC3D and used to simulate triaxial compressions to provide a verification of the implementation. The applicability of the implemented model to reproduce damage (pre-peak) and/or failure developments around a circular opening is checked. The GCS drift, one of the mine-by experiments set up at the main level of the Meuse/Haute-Marne Underground Research Laboratory, is selected for this first application."

"Introduction0N MAY 2th, 1953, Socony Seaboard Pembina No. 1 well, located 70 miles west-southwest of Edmonton, was completed as a producer of high-gravity oil from the Cretaceous Cardinm sand. This event is possibly the most significant in the development of the oil industry in Western Canada since the Devonian discovery at Leduc in 1947. The result of the Pembina discovery and the follow-up drilling has been a tremendous increase in interest in the Cardium formation.Descriptions of the Cardium formation, as it occurs in the 'Central Foothills' and in the 'Southern British Columbia Foothills' have been presented by R. E. Folinsbee (9)-and C. R. Stelck (21), respectively. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the more regional aspects of the subject.The name Cardium was first used .as a stratigraphic term in 1863. Dr. James Hector ( l2), geologist attached to Captain John Palliser's exploratory expedition, gave the name 'Cardium to the whole section of marine Cretaceous beds exposed along the Bow river west of Calgary."

Due to its unique properties, chrysotile asbestos is used in many diversified applications. In recent years, a better understanding of the structure and properties of chrysotile has evolved due to the research efforts of many investigators. A summary of the results of some of these investigations is given. An attempt is made to show the relationships between the properties of chrysotile and its crystal structure. Examples taken from the literature are cited in which methods have been developed for modifying the properties to improve the performance of asbestos in some applications. These include the effect of pH on the positive zeta potential and the addition of sodium silicate to improve filtration characteristics. The dehydroxylation and formation of forsterite when chrysotile is heated are also discussed.

"The No. 6 orebody is located 6 miles from the main op.eration of Brunswick Mining and Smelting Corporation Limited and includes open-pit and primary gyratory crushing facilities. Ore is transferred by truck to the secondary crushing facility at the main plant. About 3,500 tons of ore per day are crushed to minus % in. and ground to 68 per cent minus 400 mesh in rod and ball mills for flotation feed. Conditioning and aeration precede rougher flotation, and four stages of cleaning bring concentrates to a grade of 42 per cent Pb + Zn + Cu. Middling products are reground and refloated in a secondary flotation circuit, producing a cleaner feed and a final tails product. Primary bulk concentrate is treated with sulphur dioxide and steam-heated to l 70°F and the majority of the gangue is floated off, leaving a product that assays 57 per cent combined Pb + Zn + Cu and is suitable for marketing. This material is thickened, filtered, dried and loaded into railway cars for shipment to the smelter. "Ores enriched in critical rare earth elements (CREE) keep on being of particular interest. The CREE are Nd, Eu, Tb, Dy, including Y. In conjunction with beneficiation tests on Y-mineral bearing flotation tailings of complicated mineralogy, the Mineral Liberation Analyses (MLA) was used to work out processing characteristics fraction-wise in terms of modal mineralogy, mineral recovery, locking and liberation, and particle size.Size fractions from mechanical sieving (“real fractions”) as well as fractions created virtually by using filters on the MLA-data of the unsieved head material (“virtual fractions”) were investigated comparatively thereby. The ""virtual-sizing-approach"" features a much simpler sample preparation procedure and considerably lower cost if a fraction-wise investigation of a head sample is needed. It can be conveniently applied to intimately locked ores needing a fine grinding to a particle size distribution (PSD) range below 25 microns for instance. However, its practical use is sometimes disputed in terms of the reliability of the results. Results are shown for the main Y-bearing mineral xenotime and selected main gangue minerals of a low grade REE-ore.The influence of sample representativeness, sample preparation and particle counting statistics turned out to be of crucial importance. Given that all preconditions for reliable results are met, locking characteristics, modal mineralogy, and even PSD trends can be read from virtual fractions.The authors encourage processing engineers to use the virtual approach. They propose practical measures to improve the reliability of the MLA results, identify and tackle conflicting results, and mitigate evaluation problems that may arise."

"11.1. INTRODUCTIONA royalty is the most common form of interest retained by an owner who is disposing of his property or by a joint venturer who ceases, voluntarily or otherwise, to participate in the joint venture.1 Rarely does a non-participating party have a direct interest in the property and/or assets of a project, except during the period when a non-participating joint venturer may be having his interest diluted.2 In fact, it is most unwise to permit a non-participating party to have such an interest. It may give rise to significant problems that could prevent or substantially delay the development of an orebody and require a considerable amount of time, effort, and money to correct.3In negotiating a royalty, it is important to be aware that there is no law or convention that says, “You just don’t do that in a royalty agreement.” As with any agreement, inventiveness and flexibility on the part of the negotiator are not just assets, but virtual necessities. It is also for this reason that it is essential to read the royalty provisions, particularly the definitions, fully and carefully, especially if you are the recipient. On the other hand, if your inventiveness and flexibility cause your accountant to question the advisability of one of your ideas, pay close attention to him.4 He will, no doubt, have had experience with many royalties, and no competent professional adviser disparages a client’s ideas without good reason. Besides, he will probably be the person who will be determining the royalty or certifying the determination of it. At the very least, he will be auditing your general financial statements, which must, of course, reflect the royalty determination. Heeding his advice not only may make the determination easier but also will probably save you money in professional fees later on. Nevertheless, do not simply accept his comments or recommendations without understanding what they mean, why they have been made with respect to your royalty agreement (sometimes professionals have comments that they make as a matter of course and, even though they may be valid, you should require them to be justified to you), and how they will affect your royalty determination.It is surprising how many corporate payors insist that their standard royalty provisions5 be used as a matter of policy, thereby effectively tying the negotiator’s hands. It is even more surprising, and to professional advisers frightening, how many of the senior employees who insist that such a policy be adhered to, virtually without variation, do not know what is in the standard provisions and would be hard-pressed to explain them to a property owner. If standard provisions are appropriate, by all means use them, but do allow experienced and sensible negotiators some flexibility and make sure that everyone within the corporation who may have to use such provisions – negotiator and supervisor alike – knows what they contain and why they are as they are. For example, there are often good and convincing reasons to describe a deduction in a certain way or to include a certain specific type of deduction. On the other hand, quite often the answer to the question “why?” is that “it has always been there”; this is, or should be, an unacceptable answer. In any event, if you, as the negotiator, appear to know what you are talking about, are familiar and comfortable with your royalty provisions, and are backed up by your boss with the same words or reasoning, a property owner cannot help but be satisfied that you are knowledgeable, even if he still does not agree with your provisions. Finally, if you do use standard provisions, make sure that they are reviewed and updated regularly."

Introduction The greatest single advance in rock drilling practice since the advent of percussion drills was the introduction of tungsten carbide tipped rock drill?bits. The evolution of rock drills has been a long and highly diversified effort which has culminated in the highly refined ?drilling machines we know today, but because of the spectacular possibilities shown by ?detachable bits, and especially those with tungsten carbide inserts, there is little doubt that the cutting face of .the drilling unit has in recent days stolen the spotlight of rock drilling research and commanded the major attention of the rock drilling fraternity. "Solid" Steels Until about twenty years ago, all rock was drilled with a one-piece rod with a bit forged on one end. In the early years of the art of rock drilling, there was tried every conceivable pattern of :bit from the single-edge chisel to elaborate geometric 'designs. In the end, it was found that a 4-point bit with two sharpened cutting edges crossing each other at right angles would serve best for most rock drilling requirements. For some years thereafter, the main concern of drill manufacturers was .to obtain the best possible steel for drill rods. This was not accomplished as easily as might be thought. The cutting end had to be such that it could be hardened sufficiently to do its work without premature dulling and yet not so brittle as to shatter under the multiple impacts.
