It has long been common practice to conduct drilling and blasting operations at surface quarries in the Midwest in close proximity to near-vertical highwalls. The main reasons for such an approach, and the limited use of adequate safety controls, can be associated with higher costs, operational constraints, lithological requirements, property boundary restrictions, inadequate quarry planning, or a lack of understanding of highwall risks. Working in proximity to highwalls, without effective controls, exposes personnel and equipment to increased risk of incidents. In recent history, there have been isolated incidents involving equipment damage, or personnel injury/fatality around the United States. However, the Midwest market has largely escaped the effects of such incidents, even though the exposure rate is high. Awareness about this matter greatly increased on January 19th, 2021, when a significant incident occurred at a quarry near Green Bay, Wisconsin. As a crew was loading a typical blast near a highwall, a ground fall occurred, and multiple rock fragments struck a laborer working on the bench below. This individual sustained significant and life-altering injuries.

Beginning on the Niagara Power Project, presplitting became a widely used blasting technique to obtain smooth walls in mining and construction projects reducing scaling, creating more stable pits, allowing the application of slope steepening to reduce waste removal and increase mining depths, and increasing the safety of mine and construction workers. This technique has been minimally studied in comparison to production blasting and currently two separate theories are present on the mechanics behind the presplit. The first is that shockwave collisions between boreholes cause a tension zone to develop causing the split formation. The second is that gas pressures build in the boreholes causing hoop stresses between holes leading to a presplit formation. Practical blasting methods in presplitting such as propellant presplitting and precision presplitting would not be applicable based on the shockwave theory yet are widely used and documented in the industry. Along with this, modern research using a borehole simulation device and advanced pressure gauges have allowed the authors to obtain true borehole pressures in decoupled blastholes. This paper will present this research which correlates the borehole pressure to variables such as the Young's Modulus and Tensile Strength of various rock types giving blast designers the ability to design a presplit to function in many rock conditions, including weak rocks such as siltstones and mudstones.

Shock wave physics is an important part of air-deck behavior since the bulk explosives in the column impart a shock into the air-deck where the air shock then passes through the air-deck at a rapidly attenuating velocity. Through both high-fidelity modeling and shock physics theory it is shown that the resulting pressure in the air-deck is two orders of magnitude less than the detonation pressure of the explosive. The induced air blast reflects from the bottom of the borehole and this reflected pressure, even though doubled, is still approximately two orders of magnitude less than the detonation pressure. Air-shocks will ring back and forth in the air-deck for a few tens of milliseconds while the adjacent explosive column(s) are detonating. Transmission of the initial shock through the air along with reflections is an intensive energy consuming process. Energy balance results in shock heating of the air and a temperature increase. However, the increased temperature of the air is also orders of magnitude less than that of the explosive detonation products immediately behind the detonation front. Replacing high energy explosives with zero energy air-decks in a blasthole will always have a negative impact on the adjacent rock fragmentation and movement.

In an attempt to reduce the potential for fish mortality during the explosive demolition of Locks and Dam 26, Mississippi River, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, St. Louis District explored the use of a bubble curtain to reduce the fish kill radius of underwater explosions. Bubble curtains are walls of bubbles rising from a bottom-resting bubbler manifold supplied with compressed air. Demolition engineers have long been aware of the attenuating properties of air bubbles in water. As such, air curtains have been routinely used to protect underwater structures from damage by underwater explosive shock waves. However, their use in protecting aquatic resources during full-scale explosive demolition projects was untested.

The use of air-decks to reduce explosive costs has become very topical in recent years. The majority of the research in this area has been arried out between the Soviet Union where reductions in explosive consumption of between 10-30% have been claimed with apparent benefits being gained in both fragmentation and movement. Work carried out by the University of Maryland using thick plexiglass blocks has supported these findings and indicated that air-decks in measetbe duration of action of the shock wave on the surrounding material by a factor of 2 to 5 (see Figure 1). Although the fracture network resulting from this mechanism is not as intense as that produced adjacent to the explosive charge it does appear to act over a larger volume of material. Although the mechanism attributed to air-decking has been studied in some detail the effect of this mechanism on the size distribution of material produced during a blast does not appear tot have attracted much attention.

(Excerpts, pp 157-160) The usual means of firing blasting charges, especially in tunnels and adits in the Western States, is by the use of a safety fuse. The term safety fuse originated from the fact that when properly used under working conditions this fuse burns at a uniform rate and does not flash or explode, as was often the case with the means employed for igniting blasting charges previous to its invention; but the term is somewhat misleading, because the fuse is not, nor has it ever seriously been claimed to be, safe for use in gaseous coal mines. The fuse used for tunnel work is composed of a core of gunpowder surrounded by various layers of waterproofing material.

Success of a blasting pattern in Blasting-off-the-solid (BOS) in Bord (Room) & Pillar method of coal mining is judged by the percentage of pull achieved vis-à-vis the yield of coal produced in a blasted round. Improper blast design and distribution of explosives in shot holes normally causes poor breakage i.e. a major portion of shot holes left unbroken resulting into reduced yield per blast. Over and above the disturbance to the roof is also due to excessive vibration caused by explosive energy not properly utilized in fragmentation.

This is a true story. Names have been changed to illustrate the importance and impact of carbon monoxide risk management in explosive blast projects and the community « Honey I’m not feeling good…” “What is going on Michael?” – – Michael was not answering so Julia, who was on the third level of the magnificent house, hurried down the stairs to check up on him in the basement. Today was day 2 of the construction work of the bathroom, yesterday they had excavated all the space for the shower. She started to breathe heavily as she was approaching the bathroom and saw Michael unconscious on the floor. “Michael!” – Julia immediately dialed 911. She opened a window since the air was heavy and went by Michael to hear him breathe and take his pulse. The paramedics took Michael on a stretcher and rushed him to the hospital. “I’m feeling dizzy” she thought to herself a couple of hours after the incident, and heard Matthew say: “Mom, I’m feeling sick”. Suddenly, she felt like she would pass out and felt in danger but couldn’t move. She desperately searched for her cellphone and dialed 911 but couldn’t speak. The dispatcher sent the firefighters and paramedics to the GPS location that was appearing on the screen and the emergency team was alerted that it was a second call in hours at the same address. When the firefighters arrived, they had to force the door to enter and found Julia in her bedroom on the third floor and Anette and Matthew also unconscious in their bedroom, lying on their respective bed. There was no smoke but on their multigas meter, carbon monoxide (CO) peaked at 1500 ppm on every level of the house, which is abnormally high.

Electronic detonators have been commercially available to the mining industry worldwide for over ten years. It is estimated that total cumulative global sales will have reached 25 million units by the time of the Conference in February 2004. This is below 0.2% of all detonator types sold during this period. Perhaps 20 million will have been used underground in South African gold, diamond and platinum mines. These will have been produced by South African companies, in South Africa for South African customers. Here efforts have met with greater success and in 2003 fully 5 million, or 3% of local detonators sold, could be of an electronic type. However, it is estimated that about US$7.00 (R50.00) has been expended on R & D, manufacturing facilities and marketing, for each unit so far sold. Large sums of money continue to be spent. Despite the apparent success in South Africa, is it justified? Electronic initiation systems have not produced significant technical benefits to the end-user underground nor corporate profits to the supplier. Some doubt they ever will (even from the large surface operations where the price per unit is much higher). A conclusion might be that they have failed. In 1998 Smit and Pistorius wrote a paper titled “Implications of the Dominant Design in Electronic Initiation Systems in the South African Mining Industry”. This ISEE paper seeks to summarise and review the conclusions of the earlier work. These were: that a dominant design had not yet emerged; the type of connector and the way in which detonators are connected and programmed would be a strong determinant influencing the development of a “winning” product; technical aspects rarely solely determine which becomes the dominant design (marketing, social and economic factors often have a strong influence); electronic initiation systems were an emerging technology for the underground gold mining industry in South Africa and because it was under severe cost pressure the mines would look to them to raise productivity and hence profits; finally, as a dominant design begins to emerge, one could expect a number of players to exit from the industry.

Currently there exist several explosive quantity-distance (Q-D) rules variously exercised by most countries to protect personnel and property against the effects of accidental explosions. These regulations apply to manufacture, transport and storage of explosive products. This paper reviews the technical basis behind these regulations, as they apply to commercial and military explosives. The characteristics of a blast wave and missiles issuing out of an explosion site and their role in determining the level of damage to a target are discussed. The need for further research on the effect of detonation of charges of non-standard geometry, and under confined conditions such as tunnels is discussed. The challenge in estimating the net quantity of explosives involved and calculation of its TNT-equivalency is also highlighted.

A study was conducted to investigate the damage potential to underground multi-seam openings caused due to vibration generated by open-pit coal mine blasting. The objective was to recommend optimal explosives weight per delay to be detonated in open-pit blasts to ensure the safety and stability of underground openings. Sixteen blasts with varying charge weights and initiation sequences were conducted at Samleshawari open-pit mine and eighty four blast vibration data were recorded in the Hingir Rampur underground colliery in India. Analysis of vibration data showed that roof of the underground openings vibrated with higher amplitude of vibration compared to pillars and floors. The amplifications of vibration in the roof at the junction were upto 4.3 times the pillar vibration. It was observed that coal chips detached from roof when the peak particle velocity reached 131 mm/s or high. The vibration magnitude recorded was higher in upper seams openings than in below seam openings. Rapid attenuation of vibration was recorded in below-seam openings at similar locations. Appropriate particle-charge weight-distance equations were established to calculate the safe explosive weight per delay to be detonated in open-pit mine for safety of multi-seams workings of underground mine. Any organization that subjects its activities to a continuous improvement methodology, aiming to optimize their processes and services, must be able to adequately measure the results of the implemented changes to pursue better outcomes. This is no different for mining companies. When it comes to blasting, an accurate fragmentation analysis can correlate blast design and rock mass parameters to particle size distribution, enabling us to further analyze the correspondence of specific design patterns, applied to specific rock mass properties and the result in measured fragmentation indicators. Over time, many tools were developed for us to obtain PSD data, albeit each of them had their own shortcomings. The first ones to be developed involved photographing the muck pile including a scale object, uploading those photos to a PC, and using specialized software to analyze each one. As a result, analysts would get a PSD curve that served as reference for the performance of the blast. This method, which is still used, has major shortcomings. The most obvious one is that it is only able to capture a slice of the blast, which corresponds to the exposed section of the muck pile the analyst has access to, and even there its reach is limited to the areas that are safe for getting close enough for placing the scale, which are not many. Consequently, this is a very limited way to get a fragmentation performance assess for a blast. Currently, autonomous systems are capable of taking continuous pictures of the muck pile. Installed on a shovel, conveyor belt or crusher feed, these systems can take a continuous stream of pictures that are later analyzed automatically without the need of human intervention. These systems greatly increase the volume of data and, consequently, we have a PSD curve that is more representative of the blast performance. However, this technology still had issues when trying to sample front end loaders mining operations or getting results from underground blasting due to the inherent difficulties of these operations. New algorithms used for capturing and processing data for front end loaders can overcome the harsh environment of their operations and produce PSD data in high vibration environments and difficult mining angles. For underground mining, algorithms can be used to sample each truck exiting the mine, giving a reliable source of fragmentation analysis that can be traced back to their stope of origin. The development of this technology extends the existing system’s capabilities and helps us in our efforts to improve fragmentation results with each blast.

From October 18 through October 21, 2001, United States Antarctic Program blasters opened ten access holes for research divers in 11-ft. thick sea ice at Explorers Cove, McMurdo Sound, Antarctica. During this project, a blasting seismograph with a hydrophone accessory was used to monitor the underwater shock waves associated with the blasting technique. Shock wave values averaged 42.3 psi for initial (cratering) shots and 5.9 for subsequent clearing shots, indicating that the ice absorbs most of the shock wave. The results also provide data for refining safety protocols for divers and for the protection of marine biota.

Donna Summer wrote and recorded a song in 1983 with Michael Omartian called, “She Works Hard for the Money.” The song was inspired by her encounter with an exhausted rest room attendant, Onetta Johnson, who is mentioned in the song by name, and featured on the album’s back cover. ISEE President James Daley, in the May/June 2019 in The Journal of Explosives Engineering discussed the Six Pillars related to the ISEE. We will use the Internal Processes pillar to frame this discussion. The Internal Process Pillar includes five separate sub-committees – we will see how this concept applies to both ATF Explosives record-keeping compliance and business process compliance in general. We will discuss electronic and paper record keeping, what works and what doesn’t. We’ll review record keeping in light of those five sub-committees: Audit, Awards, Constitution, Ethics and Planning.
