A number of studies hare been reported of the effects produced in metals subjected to deformation by shock waves with maximum pressures ranging from tens to hundreds of kilobars. On the basis of the equations for the flow of mass, momentum, and energy through a stationary shock front, the macroscopic stress-strain curve for the resulting shock deformation can be calculated within narrow limits from the experimentally determined Hugoniol curve. In relatively weak shocks which are preceded by an elastic wave, the stress rises above the clastic limit only as plastic deformation proceeds cold thus the shock has a long toe. In strong shocks that override the elastic wave a high stress is applied without prior plastic deformation. A more important effect of increasing the shock pressure is the generation of shear stresses, called supercrilical shear stresses, that exceed the strength of the perfect lattice. A change in the mechanism of deformation is expected to result from the onset of supercritical shear. The shock disordering of ordered Cu3Au in strong shocks appears to be an example of such a change. It is suggested that the formation of fine twins in copper and nickel and the formation of structures which enable visible twins to be formed in the rarefaction ware, observed in copper and presumably in disordered Cu3 Au, are related to the occurrence of supercritical shear in shock dcformation. In recent years several studies1,2 have been made of the changes in structural and mechanical properties of metals produced by the passage through the metals of strong shock-compression waves ranging from about 50 to 800 kbar pressure. Recent work involving dynamic measurements of the shock compression "Hugoniot" curves 3-8 of many metals has developed techniques and provided data required to obtain the shock pressure and the (transient! plastic deformation produced in the shock-conlpression experirnents.9 Shock deformation has been found to be much more effective than slow deformation in changing the mechanical properties of metals, when the two are compared on the basis of equal plasti strain, Holtzman and Cowan9 made quantitative estimates of the shearing stress occurring in a shock front in a metal by assuming that the shearing stress is similar to that occurring in a shock front in a viscous, heat-conducting fluid, with the addition of a yield stress. Taylor's solution9 for a weak shock was used to estimate pairs of values of shearing stress and thickness of the shock front obtained by assumed choices of the ratio of effective kinetic viscosity to thermal diffusivity. It was noted from these values that. unless the shock front is extremely thin. heat conduction has slight effect, and the shearing stress is nearly independent of the mechanism of deformation. This mechanism does, however, determine the thickness of the shock front and the rate of strain. Furthermore, since the maximum possible shearing stress occurring in shocks of moderate strength does not greatly exceed the shear stress occurring in conventional slow deformation, the mechanism of deformation is not expected to be qualitatively different. The greater effectiveness of shock deformation in changing the mechanical properties of metals can be attributed partly to the fact that dislocations, when driven by near-conventional stresses, cannot keep up with the shock front, thus necessitating a higher dislocation density than required for an equivalent slow strain. The fast uni-axial strain occurring in the thin shock front would also be expected to cause a larger number of dislocation intersections to occur. In the upper range of shock pressures that have been studied the estimated values of the shearing stress exceeded the estimated shear strength of a perfect crystal. Under these circumstances it is reasonable to expect that the mechanism of deformation might be considerably different from that involved in slow deformation. Except for the observation by smith1 of twins in shocked copper, the effects of shock waves on metals did not show any obvious or large changes in properties that would indicate the onset of a change in the mechanism of deformation. The recent investigation of the effect of shock waves on ordered and disordered specimens of Cu3Au by Beardmore, Holtzman, and ever" showed a spectacular decrease in the amount of long-range order retained by initially ordered Cu3Au when the shock pressure was raised from 290 to 370 kbar. Since Dr. Holtzman and I suspected that this behavior probably was due to the onset of a shearing stress in the shock front in Cu3Au which exceeded the limiting shear strength of the perfect crystal. it was considered appropriate to examine directly the shock-front equations for a solid. and to obtain a sound estimate of the shearing stress occurring in the front using equation of state data obtained from shock studies. Tar sand deposits in the state of Utah contain more than 25 billion bbl of in-place bitumen. Although 30 times smaller than the well-known Athabasca tar sands, Utah tar sands do represent a significant domestic energy resource comparable to the national crude oil reserves (31.3 billion bbl). Based upon a detailed analysis of the physical and chemical properties of both the bitumen and the sand, a hot-water separation process for Utah tar sands is currently being developed in our laboratories at the University of Utah. This process involves intense agitation of the tar sand in a hot caustic solution and subsequent separation of the bitumen by a modified froth flotation technique. Experimental results with an Asphalt Ridge, Utah, tar sand sample indicated that percent solids and caustic concentration were the two most important variables controlling the performance of the digestion stage. These variables were identified by means of an experimental factorial design, in which coefficients of separation greater than 0.90 were realized. Although preliminary in nature, the experimental evidence' gathered in this investigation seems to indicate that a hot-water separation process for Utah tar sands would allow for the efficient utilization of this important energy resource. The projected increase in the ever-widening gap between the domestic energy demand and the domestic energy supply for the next few years has motivated renewed interest in energy sources other than petroleum, such as tar sands, oil shale and coal. Although a number of research programs on the exploitation of national coal and oil shale resources have already been completed, very few programs have been initiated on the processing of tar sand resources in the United States. In recognition of their significance as a domestic energy resource, investigators at the University of Utah have designed an extensive research program on Utah tar sands. An important phase of this program, and the main subject of this publication, is the development of a hot-water process for the recovery of bitumen from Utah tar sands, as a preliminary step toward the production of synthetic fuels and petrochemicals. The term "tar sand" refers to a consolidated mixture of bitumen (tar) and sand. The sand in tar sand is mostly a-quartz as determined from X-ray diffraction patterns. Alternate names for "tar sands" are "oil sands" and "bituminous sands." The latter is technically correct and in that sense provides an adequate description. Tar sand deposits occur throughout the world, often in the same geographical areas as petroleum deposits. Significantly large tar sand deposits have been identified and mapped in Canada, Venezuela and, the United States. By far, the largest deposit is the Athabasca tar sands in the Province of Alberta, Canada. According to the Alberta Energy Resources Conservation Board (AERCB),2,3 proved reserves of crude in-place bitumen in the Athabasca region amount to almost 900 billion bbl. To date, this is the only tar sand deposit in the world being mined and processed for the recovery of petroleum products. Great Canadian Oil Sands, Ltd. (GCOS) produces 20 million bbl of synthetic crude oil per year. Another plant being constructed by Syncrude Canada, Ltd. is expected to produce in excess of 40 million bbl of synthetic crude oil per year. According to the Utah Geological and Mineral Survey (UGMS), tar sand deposits in the state of Utah contain more than 25 billion bbl of bitumen in place, which represent almost 95% of the total mapped resources in the United States.4 The extent of Utah tar sand reserves seems small compared to the enormous potential of Canadian tar sands. Nevertheless, Utah tar sand reserves do represent a significant energy resource comparable to the United States crude oil proved reserves of 31.3 billion bbl in 1976.5 Tar sands in Utah occur in 51 deposits along the eastern side of the state.4 However, only six out of these 51 deposits are worthy of any practical consideration (Fig. 1). As indicated in Table 1, Tar Sand Triangle is the largest deposit in the state and contains about half of the total mapped resources. Information regarding the grade or bitumen content of Utah deposits is still very limited. The bitumen content varies significantly from deposit to deposit, as well as within a given deposit. In any event, the information available6-8 seems to indicate that Utah deposits are not as rich in bitumen as the vast Canadian deposits which average 12 to 13% by weight.9 Although many occurrences of bitumen saturation up to 17% by weight have been detected in the northeastern part of the state (Asphalt Ridge and P. R. Spring), the average for reserves in Utah may well be less than 10% by weight. The partial molar heats of solution in liquid tin of cadmium, silver, tellurium, and zinc have been measured at 655°. 700°, and 750°K by liquid-metal solution calorimetry. Silver, cadmium, and zinc are endothermic at these temperatures while tellurium is exothermic. Only the heat of solution of silver depends on composition while all four elements show a temperature-de pendent heat of solution. The heat of solution of tellurium is constant up to 0.6 g-at. pct, becomes increasingly more exothermic, and reaches a limiting value at 1 g-at. pct Te. The limiting value has been used to calculate the heat of formation of SnTe at 750°K. The heat effects associated with the dissolution of the compounds Ag2 Te, CdTe, and ZnTe in liquid tin were measured at 750°K. These values are cotnOined with the measured hat effects at 750°Kfor silver, cadmium, tellurium, and zinc to detertrline the heats of formation of the telluride compounds. Cadmium lelluride exhibits a heat of dissolution which has a compositional dependence. THERE is a considerable amount of interest in the compounds of tellurium because of their electronic properties. Both cadmium and zinc tellurides are thermoelectric materials and considerable work has been done on their electronic properties but a limited amount of data is available on their ther-modynamic properties. This work was undertaken to elucidate the heat of formation data on cadmium and zinc telluride. Since both cadmium and zinc are in Group II it seemed to be of interest to compare the values obtained for them with the heat of formation of a Group I telluride. Silver telluride was selected for this comparison. In the course of the work it was also possible to determine the heat of formation of tin telluride and therefore to make a comparison of some of the Group I, 11, and lV tellurides with the metallic elements silver, cadmium, and tin being in the same period. There is also a great deal of interest in the energetic changes which occur upon addition of solute elements to a common solvent. This investigation provided an opportunity to study the partial molar heats of solution of silver, cadmium, tellurium, and zinc in liquid tin. The partial molar heats of solution are of theoretical interest because solute-solute interactions are a minimum in dilute solutions and application of solution models is simpli- fied. In order to complete the analysis of solute-solute and solute-solvent interactions the temperature dependence of the partial molar heats of solution was also measured. MATERIALS AND EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE All materials were of the highest purity available. The silver, zinc, cadmium, and tellurium were obtained from American Smelting and Refining Co. and were reported to be 99.999 pct pure. The silver telluride, zinc telluride, and cadmium telluride were obtained from Atomergic Chemetals Co., a division of Gallard-Schlesinger Chemical Manufacturing Corp., and were electronic-grade material of 99.999 pct purity. Tin used for the solvent bath and for calibration was obtained from the Vulcan Manufacturing Co. and was reported as being 99.99 pct pure. The liquid-tin solution calorimeter used in this work is similar in principle to the differential twin-type calorimeter described by K1eppa.l Two of three identical calorimeter wells are used together during any set of experiments, one well being active and the other being passive. The wells are positioned 120 deg apart in an aluminum calorimeter block. Each well contains a multijunction thermopile and a Pyrex test tube to hold the liquid metal bath. Forty-eight of the thermopile junctions are distributed over the surface of each calorimeter well adjacent to the test tube and serve to integrate the heat effects occurring. The other forty-eight are next to the aluminum calorimeter block. The thermopiles for the three wells are connected differentially so that any change in temperature at the outer junctions (which will be the same for both wells because of the high conductivity of the aluminum block) will oppose for the two wells and result in no shift of the zero. The electrical output represents the true temperature difference between the two reaction vessels. A reaction occurring in the active well gives a comparison with another body of very similar thermal properties. In this way, any spurious heat effects due to slight temperature drifts within the entire calorimeter block are eliminated. The output of the differential thermopile goes to a dc amplifier with multiple ranges of from * 10 pv to 1 30 mv. The output of the amplifier is then fed into a Leeds and Northrup strip-chart recorder. The adiabatic temperature change is then calculated using the technique of Howlett, Leach, Ticknor, and ever.' HIS investigation originated as a result of a pre-vious experimental study' of the magnetic properties of Fe-Co alloys fabricated by the powder metallurgy technique. Densities of powder compacts prepared for the magnetics investigation varied from 7.45 to 7.70 g per cu cm or from 93 to 95 pct of the experimental value of 8.08 g per cu cm for a fused alloy of the same composition.' While this range of density is considered sufficiently high for most applications, the highest possible density is to be desired for maximum magnetic properties. By applying a technique similar to the one described above to a pure electrolytic iron powder, Rostoker³ was able to achieve a density of 7.895 g per cu cm, which is the highest density ever reported for sintered iron. While Rostoker's work involved the sintering of an elemental powder rather than a mixture, it was believed that higher densities should also have been obtained for alloys using the above technique because of the recoining operation and the high sintering temperature. Consequently, it was decided to investigate the various factors affecting the density of this alloy with the idea that such a study might lead to higher densities and, as a result, powder alloys having magnetic properties identical with those of the fused alloys. It was believed that the principal reason that near-theoretical densities for the powdered alloy were not obtained was the interference of gases with the normal sintering mechanism. When present during the sintering operation, gases can exert several harmful effects: they can remain on the particle surface and interfere with surface diffusion and plastic flow; they can be released and, under certain conditions, expand the void spaces through gas pressure; or they can remain trapped in the pores and exert a hydrostatic pressure that retards elimination of the pores. Jones,4 Rhines,5 Goetzel," and others have given the effect of gases in the sintering of powder compacts an extensive treatment. Among the more important sources of gases in the sintering process are dissolved gases, adsorbed gases, air entrapped during pressing, and gaseous products of chemical reactions. During sintering adsorbed gases are partly released at a relatively low temperature, while those gases entrapped during pressing cannot escape until their pressure is increased sufficiently through increasing temperature to expand the interpartjcle openings. The remaining adsorbed gases, gaseous reduction products, and dissolved gases produce a similar effect at the higher temperatures. If, in the sintering process, gas evolution occurs after the interpore channels have been sealed, an exaggerated expansion of the void spaces results. This is particularly true if the temperature is high enough for extensive plastic flow. In his fabrication of powder bars from tantalum, Balke7 had to consider the effect of adsorbed hydrogen and provide for its escape during sintering by limiting the compacting pressure to a maximum of 50 tons per sq in. The effect of gases entrapped during pressing was first noted by Trzebiatowski8 when he found that gold and silver powders decrease in density with increasing sintering temperature if pressed at 200 tsi, while they exhibit the usual increase when pressed at 40 tsi. Recent investigators9-11 have also noted that entrapped gases have an effect on the expansion of copper compacts during sintering. Proper provision for the escape of gaseous products of reduction must be made in order to avoid deleterious effects. Myers" states that in the sintering of electrolytic tantalum powder, the temperature was gradually raised to 2600°F with a pause at 2000°F to permit reduction of the oxides. Experimental Details For the present study, 50 pct Co-50 pct Fe compacts in the form of circular disks 1½ in. in diam and 0.15 in. thick were fabricated by the pressing and sintering of a mixture of the elemental powders. It was decided to follow the sintering process by means of liquid permeability measurements, because it was thought that such measurements might serve as a measure of relative pore sizes, as well as a possible indication of the point at which most of the interpore channels become sealed. However, since the permeability as measured by the flow of a liquid, such as ethylene glycol, does not give an absolute indication of the point where the pores have become isolated, a method for determining the percentage of pores connected to the surface was set up. As an additional cross check on the permeability measurements, metallographic methods were used to study the relative pore size. Finally, the property of ultimate interest, the density, was measured. Raw Materials: The powders used consisted of an annealed, 99.9 pct pure, —150 mesh grade of electrolytic iron powder, and a 98 pct pure, —200 mesh grade of reduced and comminuted cobalt powder. The cobalt powder was not further processed either by hydrogen reduction or annealing. The screen analyses for the iron and cobalt powders are given in Table I, while the chemical analyses for each type of powder are listed in Table 11. Table 111 gives the hydrogen loss measurements for the powders according to the M.P.A. Standard Method and for a higher temperature as well. Preparation of Compacts: Equal amounts of the elemental powders were mixed by rotation for 1 hr and then pressed into compacts approximately 0.15

In order to devise a practicable soaking pit schedule for use at The Steel Co. of Canada Ltd.'s Hamilton Works, soaking pit heating temperatures, sooking times, pit capacity, and safe maximum mill drafts were correlated with fluctuations in the current or load of the bloom mill driving motor. Other variables such as total delays in the pit, rolling schedules, mill delays, and track times were also investigated. IN order to show an easily applied and accurate means of establishing soaking pit heating temperatures, soaking times, pit capacity, and safe maximum mill drafts, these various factors are correlated herein with fluctuations in the current or load of the bloom mill driving motor. Rolling practices have a considerable influence on the production capacity of a blooming mill. The maximum values of the torque, in particular, are of importance, since even instantaneous current peaks lead to the tripping of the motor by the overload relay and result in loss of mill time. The establishment of safe maximum drafts and accelerations for ingots of different sizes and of a soaking pit practice which would ensure a consistent and satisfactory plasticity of the metal is of considerable importance for increasing the efficiency of both the blooming mill and the soaking pits. The Bloom Mill Dept. of the Hamilton Works, The Steel Co. of Canada Ltd., is equipped with one 44 in. mill driven by a 7000 hp motor with the setting of the overload relay at 22.0 ka. The speed of rotation of the motor is regulated after the Ward-Leonard system. There are three basic speeds of 9.5, 28, and 47 rpm and a further possibility of increasing the speed by weakening the field. This last possibility is hardly ever used during practical operations. The rolling program of the blooming mill is varied, both in the size of the ingots to be handled and in the steel grades. The total tonnage handled by the mill is about 2,000,000 ingot tons per year. At the time of the investigation, the Bloom Mill Dept. was equipped with 22 soaking pits (6 regenerative, 14 bottom-fired, and 2 one-way top-fired pits) with a total bottom area of 2770 sq ft. The pits are fired with a blast furnace-coke oven gas mixture having a calorific value of 155 Btu per cu ft. The foregoing figures show that the production program was such as to impose the necessity of a most efficient usage of the available equipment. For this purpose, the operations of the 44 in. mill and of the soaking pits were investigated, and the results of the investigation were used as a basis for a revised soaking pit schedule and drafting practice. The plasticity of an ingot of a certain chemical composition when being rolled is determined mainly by the following factors: I—the ingot size, both thickness and width; 2—the length of the gas soak; and 3—the surface temperature. The first two factors determine the uniformity of the temperature distribution over the cross-section of an ingot. The third factor introduces the level of the heating of an ingot. The torque produced by an ingot being rolled is determined by the area of the metal displaced, its plasticity, and acceleration values. On the other hand, with shunt motors the torque is determined by the current. This can be assumed to be correct with only a small degree of error for compound motors with a relatively small effect of the series windings as long as the velocity is not regulated by weakening the field. Since the spread is relatively unimportant when compared to the width of an ingot and since it is also reduced several times during rolling by edging passes, the draft alone and not the area of the metal displaced may be taken into consideration with ingots of a similar size. It is therefore possible to determine the main features of the heating and drafting of an ingot by measuring the current and acceleration of the mill motor. After the acceleration has been taken into account, the amount of current will be an indication of how the motor responds to a heating and/or drafting practice and these practices can be adjusted in order to get the desired result. As peak currents are more likely when heavier ingots are rolled, the rolling of plate and slab ingots was investigated. Conditions prevailing when smaller ingots are rolled can be deduced from the results obtained on heavier ingots. All measurements were made when plain carbon grades under 0.15 pct C were rolled. The motor current, the voltage across the armature, and the rpm were recorded simultaneously on synchronized charts, Fig. 1, which moved with the speed of 6 in. per min. Each draft was recorded by a special observer. The rpm curve made it possible to establish the acceleration at any given moment. For purposes of correlation, the maximum current during a pass and the corresponding acceleration were used. The charts made it possible to establish the position of the roller's lever at any given moment as well as the total time of a pass. The slab ingots were divided into three groups (28x35, 28x45, and 27Mx53 in. ingots) and each group was investigated separately. Since they account for most of the current peaks, only flat passes were used for purposes of correlation, a total of 1373 having been investigated.

The discovery of gold in the Toodoggone River area is credited to Charles McClair who mined placer deposits in 1925, reportedly valued at $17,500. After he and his partner went missing in 1927, efforts to relocate their workings resulted in the formation of Two Brothers Valley Gold Mines Ltd. in 1933, in which the legendary Grant McConachie (first president of CP Air) played an active role. This was the age when the prospector first utilized the airplane to reconnoitre remote areas. What greeted the observer from the air was an area rich in orange and yellow colours characteristic of gossans formed by the oxidation of sulphides. However, Samuel Black, a Hudson Bay Company fur trader, had also noted in his diary as early as 1824, the unusual and many gossanous colours in the headwaters of the Finlay River. These gossans, coupled with white limestone bluffs and the presence of placer gold, attracted the first reconnaissance of the area by Cominco in 1929. Cominco was ever active in remote areas at this time. They staked and worked several base-metal showings hosted by limestone at the margins of intrusive stocks. These early workers also obtained erratic high gold assays from chalcedony float samples found in creeks draining into the Toodoggone River. However, because the samples gave inconsistent assays, no concerted effort was made to locate their source. Except for the occasional horse-supported prospecting party of the late 1940s and early 1950s, the area did not receive much attention until 1968. Work until this time focused on the base metal lead-zinc showings which contained attractive silver credits. Gold was not an attraction because of the set price established by the US government. The late 1960s saw the northward expansion of porphyry copper exploration into the Toodoggone. A program of gossan soil sampling (gossans which had attracted the early workers) was carried out by Kennco Explorations (Western) Ltd. in 1966-1967. They analysed for base metals in the field, using a cold extraction method. The Kemess copper- gold prospect was staked as a result of anomalous copper values from this early geochemical program. In 1968, Kennco continued the program of silt traversing and field geochemical testing. The samples were further subjected to multielement analysis consisting of copper, molybdenum, lead, zinc, cobalt, nickel, and silver at Kennco's North Vancouver laboratory. Several anomalous creeks, high in combinations of copper, molybdenum, and silver, were outlined. Some initial soil grids were also established. The fall of 1969 saw the return of Kennco prospector Gordon Davies and geologist Bob Stevenson to check out a well-defined molybdenum, scattered copper and silver anomaly in soils from a grid on the Chappelle claims. The subsequent analysis of several selected quartz felsenmeer floats yielded one assay which ran in the order of 0.25 kg/t (8 oz per st) gold and 2.2 kg/t (70 oz per st) silver. Subsequent trenching on the Chappelle claims exposed the source of float in a 4- m (134) wide vein of high grade gold-silver mineralization. These results led quickly to the realization that the district had precious metal potential. Subsequent exploration in the period 1969-1974 by Kennco resulted in the discovery of most of the gold and silver occurrences on the Chappelle and Lawyers properties. Several other gold and silver occurrences were found in this district by Cordilleran, Cominco, and Sumitomo, working the district during this period. Conwest optioned the Chappelle in 1973 and explored underground by adit entry as part of a one-year program. In 1974, Du Pont of Canada Exploration Ltd. optioned the Chappelle claims and in March 1980, using reserves developed on the A vein, placed the Baker mine into production at a rate of 90.7 Vd (100 stpd). The Amethyst zone on the Lawyers property, 8 km (5 miles) north of Chappelle, was found in 1973 by Kennco using continued, persistent followup prospecting of silver silt geochemical anomalies. A silt anomaly in the order of 3.4 ppm silver occurred in a stream flowing 300 m (984 ft)

HAPPILY, a large group of the non-ferrous fraternity have long valued a personal association with the new Chairman of the Institute of Metals Division. Many others who will meet him, either officially or unofficially this year, will find themselves sharing the enthusiasm with which he has been welcomed to his new office. Albert A. Smith, Jr., was born at Butler, N. J., on Dec. 28, 1904, and moved to New Haven in time to initiate his preparation for Yale University on the home grounds. After receiving a B.S. degree cum laude in 1926, he stayed on for graduate work at the Hammond Laboratory under C. H. Mathewson, and was awarded an M.S. degree in 1928.

Transmission-electron micrographs of electro-thinned samples of bulk-aged Cu-3.1 pet Co alloy show an aging sequence, supersaturated solid solution — coherent particles — quasi -coherent particles — noncoherent particles. Hardening is due to precipitation of coherent spherical fee coball-rich particles showing coherency strain fields, which are resolved at between 15 and 30A diameter. Loss of- full coherency did not occur until well into the overaged region, even with the assistance of deformation after aging. Different average particle diameters of 123, 92, and 149 ± 10Å were observed in samples aged to peak yield strength at 600°, 650°, and 700°C, respectively, indicating that there is no critical size for peak hardening. Noncoherent particles tended to develop (111) faces and became octahedral in shape. Dislocations tended to nucleate spherical coherent particles which eventually grew together forming large elongated particles. The surface energy of a noncoherent (low-angle) inter-phase boundary is estimated to he about 50 ergs per sq cm. A number of particle lining-up phenomena were observed. Overaging is principally attributed to increase in particle spacing, progressive loss of coherency, and increase in amount of discontinzdous precipitation. COPPER dissolves about 5.6 at. pet (5.2 wt pet) of cobalt at 1110oC1 and the solubility decreases to 0.75 at. petl (0.54 at. pet)2 at 650°C and to 0.1 at. pet or less at lower temperature.' It has been known for many years3-5 that Cu-Co alloys are capable of age hardening. Since cobalt is fee above 417°C and its atom size is only about 2 pet smaller than that of copper, precipitation of coherent particles would be expected. The equilibrium phase precipitated at 700°C and below contains about 10 pet Cu in solution which tends to stabilize the fee structure, lowering the transformation temperature to 340oc.l The alloy is known to undergo discontinuous precipitation in addition to general precipitation; while the former can be seen with an optical microscope, the latter precipitates are not visible except in the grosly overaged condition.5, 6 Extensive use has therefore been made of the ferromagnetic properties of the precipitate in order to follow the course of aging, and it has proved possible to measure the average particle size, spacing, approximate shape, and volume fraction and to determine that the particles are coherent without ever seeing a particle (see for example Refs. 2, 7, and 8). The magnetic measurements of particle size are limited to diameters below about 120Å.7 The present study was undertaken using the techniques of transmission-electron microscopy in order to check the above conclusions, to extend the previous magnetic work to larger particle sizes, and to attempt a more detailed correlation of properties and structure. A portion of this work has already been published.9-11 The present paper is concerned with the metallographic features of precipitation in relation to aging curves. Bonar and Kelly12'13 have published preliminary results of a similar study on single crystals of Cu-2 at. pet Co. EXPERIMENTAL Preparation of Alloy. A Cu-Co alloy, containing 3.12 wt pet (3.36 at. pet) Co by analysis, was prepared from 99.999 pet purity oxygen-free copper and electrolytic-grade cobalt. The alloy was melted and cast in vacuo in a high-frequency furnace using a graphite crucible and mold: Analysis showed chat 0.004 pet C was picked up during melting. The 1-1/2-lb ingot was homogenized in hydrogen for 24 hr at 1000°C. Slices were cold-rolled to 0.005 or 0.003 in. thickness, with an intermediate 650°C anneal in hydrogen at 0.080 in. thickness. Batches of six to ten strips were solution-treated in sealed-off quartz tubes in high vacuum in a vertical furnace and quenched by dropping into iced brine containing a device which snapped off the nose of the tube. Solution treatment consisted of 1 hr at 990°C or 2 hr at 965°C. The latter was employed for all mechanical-property studies, since a tendency was noted for the higher temperature to give porous material. Strips were usually aged individually in a horizontal vacuum furnace, inserting into the hot zone and withdrawing into a cold zone without breaking the vacuum. This method gave a rapid heating rate, permitting the use of short aging times. ANDREW FLETCHER, newly elected Treasurer and Director, has spent his entire mining career in the employ of the St. Joseph Lead Co. and brings to the Institute Board a career rich in financial experience and varied in interest and accomplishment. "Drew" Fletcher was born in New York City on Feb. 6, 1895. After graduating from the Sheffield Scientific School of Yale in 1916 as a mechanical engineer, he became a shipyard mechanic in Wilmington, Del. The next thirteen years saw. him gradually enlarging his responsibilities until he ultimately became the head of the W. & A. Fletcher Co., in Hoboken, N. J., ship repairers. In 1929 his program for merging the Fletcher plant with five other New York shipyards was finally consummated in the formation of the United Dry Docks, Inc., which subsequently was purchased by Bethlehem Steel, with the result that today the old Fletcher yard and organization has been expanded into one of the finest ship repair units in the United States.

A NATIVE son of Salt Lake City. David Douglas Moffat has contributed greatly to both the mineral industries and civic progress in the State of Utah. He was born in 1880 and his whole life bas been intimately associated with mining and milling. His father, one of Utah's pioneer mining men, was superintendent of a mill at Park City. When Moffat was only 18 years of age he went to Philipsburg Mont., where he spent several years as a machinist, and later as master mechanic for the Granite Bi-Metallic Mining Co. He returned to Park City in 1903 as master mechanic and night mill foreman for the Ontario Silver Mining Co. After a few years of varied experience he became, in 1910. general foreman of the Boston Consolidated Will at Garfield, Utah.

MY thanks are due to Mr. Frank Firmstone, Easton, Pa., who has called my attention to the statement in my papers that " Barite, fluorite and quartz, though not observed in the Tennessee area," . . . as possibly misleading to the reader, if construed to mean that such a discovery had never been made. Mr. Firmstone is correct in assuming that this statement referred only to the study of the worked areas of the metallic ores, especially zinc, made in the course of the survey upon which my paper was based. The occurrence of barite and fluorite with lead-ores in Tennessee was reported by Prof. Safford,2 in 1869, and by Safford and Killebrew,3 in 1887, with the further statement that about 1,000,000 lb. of barite were annually mined in Greene, Washington and Jefferson counties, Tenn., and that considerable deposits occur also in McMinn, Smith and other counties. It is also noted that the barite ".usually occurs in veins, associated with galena." The present worked areas of barite are, however, distinct barite propositions, without workable quantities of either lead or zinc, so far as mining operations have gone, and the areas are more or less removed from the present areas of zinc-ores. Mr. Firmstone informs me also that, in 1892, he observed, in the magnesian limestone at Watauga Point, in Carter county, on the left bank of the Watauga river, a little below the mouth of Buffalo creek, small quantities of galena and some fluorite.

THE BULOLO gold-dredging operations were described at some length by Frank W. Griffin at the Oct. 11 meeting of the San Francisco Section. This enterprise is on the island of New Guinea, about 1800 miles north of Sydney, Australia. The area in which the present placers exist originally was German territory but later the location was taken over by Australians. Gold was discovered in 1923 by prospectors who required 8 to 9 days to pack into the country over severe mountain trails. In 1926 a rich discovery was made on Edie Creek and in 1927 the deposit on the Bulolo River was discovered.

Although it has long been realized that gas recovery from a water-drive gas reservoir may be poor because of high residual saturations under water drive, it appears that only limited infomlation on the subject has been available until recently. This study was performed to show the qiiantitative potential importance of water influx. Results indicate that gas recovery may be very low in some cases: perhaps as low as 45 per cent of the initial gas in place. Gas recovery under water drive appear to depend in an important was on: (I) the prodirction rate and manner of production; (2) the residual gas saturation; (3) aquifer propertie.); and (4) the volumetric displacement effciency of water invading the gas reservoir. The manner of estimating water-drive gas reservoir recovery can vary considerably. Examples are: the steady-state tnethorl. the Hurst modified steady-state method, and various unsteady-state methods such ac. those of van Ever-dingen-Hurst, Hurst, and Carter-Tracy. The Carter-Tracy water influx expression was used in this study. In certain cases, it appears that gas recovery can be increased significantly by controlling the production rate and manner of production. For this reason, the potential importance of water influx in particular gas reservoirs should he investigated early to permit adequtrtr planning lo optirtize the pay reserves. INTRODUCTION In recent years, the economic importance of natural gas production has become increasingly apparent. This has been evidenced by more intensive exploration efforts aimed at gas production, and exploitation of both deep, as well as low-permeability gas reservoirs. Technical developments such as deep-penetration fracturing have made development of such formations economically feasible. Unfortunately, water influx has forced abandonment of a number of gas reservoirs at extraordinarily high pressures. Although reservoir engineering methods for estimating water influx have long been available, it appears that application of these methods to the water-drive gas reservoir has been sporadic.'a Available methods for estimating water influx which can be applied to the water-drive gas reservoir problem include the steady-state method,1 the Hurst modified steady-state method and various unsteady-state methods such as those of van Everdingen-Hurst. Hurst, and Carter-Tracy. Interesting applications of these solu- tions to gas reservoir and the aquifer gas-storage problems have appeared recently.3,12,14 The experimental study of residual gas saturations under water drive by Geffen et al. in 1952 indicated that residual gas saturations could be extremely high. A value of 35 per cent of pore volume is often used in field practice when specific information is not available. The study of Geffen et al. showed that residual gas saturation might be much higher in some cases. Naar and Henderson concluded that the residual non-wetting phase saturation under imbibition should be about half of the initial non-wetting phase saturation. The Naar and Henderson result that residual gas saturation under water influx should be about half the original gas saturation is recommended as an estimate if laboratory measurements are not available. Thus, it is clear that a considerable portion of the initial gas in place might be trapped in a water-drive gas reservoir as residual gas at high pressure. A full water-drive would result in loss of residual gas trapped at initial reser.voir pressure. Consideration of transient aquifer behavior leads to the conclusion that high-rate production of water-drive gas reservoirs could result in improved gas recovery by reduction of the abandonment pressure. However, there appears to be little quantitative information on this possibility. One of the few advantages of water-drive gas production appears to be improved deliverability through water-drive support of the reservoir pressure. There may also be an advantage in higher condensate recovery caused by pressure maintenance for gas-condensate water-drive reservoirs. In view of the preceding, this study was made to assess the potential importance of water-drive in gas reservoir engineering. The Carter-Tracy approximate water-influx expression was used because this equation offers some advantages in hand-calculation which do not appear to have been generally recognized.' However, calculations were performed in the main with a high-speed digital computer to permit evaluation of the effect of water-drive under a large variety of conditions. CALCULATION METHOD Water-drive gas reservoir performance can be estimated in a manner completely analogous to oil reservoir calculations: a materials balance is written for the reservoir, and a water influx equation is written for the aquifer. Siniltaneous solution provides the cun~ulative water influx and the reservoir pressure. When reservoir performance data (gas produced and reservoir pressures) are available, it is usually possible to match performance data to determine the initial gas in place and the water influx parameters —

A present the colleges and universities are struggling to meet the responsibilities placed upon them by the return of the veterans from the armed forces to the educational institutions as well as the youth graduating from the high schools. The problems of meeting these responsibilities are complex and upon the shoulders of the educational administrators lies much of the burden. One of those educators who is in the midst of this situation is James Rowland Cudworth, dean of the College of Engineering of the University of Alabama and Chairman of the Mineral Industry Education Division, AIME, both for 1946 and 1947. He was born at Norwich, Conn., on Sept. 23, 1897, and like his father before him went to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology where he received his Bachelor's degree in 1921. His studies at MIT were mainly in the fields of geological and mining engineering. Why a New Englander studies mining is anybody's guess, but it may be due to a love of traveling to far places which so many New Englanders do. After graduating tinder the famed Waldemar Lindgren. Jim trekked to Mexico where he worked at Pachuca for the Cia. Real del Monte and at Charcas with the American Smelting and Refining Co.

INTRODUCTION At the time of the death of Mao Tse-tung in 1976, China was a major oil producing country with a daily oil flow in the order of 1.735 million barrels. This position had been achieved with minimal assistance from the outside world. Further, only some fifteen years had elapsed since the country's daily oil production capacity had hovered at the barely significant level of one hundred thousand barrels. Why then did the new leaders of China, after this very creditable record of success, suddenly change the direction of the country's drive for future hydrocarbon production? First, by switching much of the emphasis of exploration from onshore to the offshore continental shelf basins, and further by apparently abandoning the philosophy of self reliance calling upon the world's oil industry to share in the task of locating and developing these potential offshore energy reserves. The answer is probably only partly understood by those of us outside China, However, a number of factors exerting an important influence on this decision can be identified. THE MOVE OFFSHORE The new leadership was anxious to rapidly move China into her rightful place amongst the powerful and technologically advanced nations of the world. Modernization became the slogan, specifically modernization on four fronts, agriculture, industry, technology and military with the goal to "catch the west by the year 2000". But how to generate the capital to finance this massive modernization program? The rapid escalation of the price of crude oil following the 1973 Oil Embargo and the continuing apparently insatiable world demand for this now extremely precious primary resource was very clear to all. China, as a major producer, could export crude to help finance the ambitious development programs of the government. To do this, however, would require a very significant in¬crease in present production capacity, as the domestic demand even for China with her relatively low per capita energy consumption, is essentially equal to the current production. Trying to rapidly move the new regime's programs into actions, one can only assume that the planners looked at the success of the petroleum industry over the preceding fifteen years and quickly concluded that this well established curve could be maintained and indeed steepened with an increase in effort. The rapid discovery of a few more Daqing's (China's premier oil field, producing one million barrels a day) would have the country's ambitious modernization goals within reach. Petroleum would be the principal bridge to the bright future. The next decision involved the question of where to look for these vast new reserves. Chinese exploration teams had already looked at most of the onshore sedimentary basins and, while they were the first to admit that there was much yet to do, it was fairly clear to them that the potential for large new accumulations was confined to two areas: the little explored, remote, inhospitable regions of western China, principally Xinkiang Province and the equally unexplored offshore basins of the continental shelf and slope. In both cases China faced a very serious problem. The inhospitable environments were severely straining her petroleum industry's current technological ability to cope, particularly as the government needed rapid results. Thus the pragmatic and, to the foreign oil industry, unexpected decision to invite cooperation with the outside world. The reasons for the initial emphasis on the exploration of the offshore basins with the cooperation of foreign oil companies are again supposition on my part, but probably involved considerations of technical merit, ease of development and delivery to markets together with more sensitive issues such as controling the influence of foreign philosophies and values on the Chinese population by containing most foreign activity to the offshore. So within three years of the death of the great helmsman, China had developed a plan to involve foreign oil companies, both state and private, in a grand plan to rapidly increase the nations oil production. In fact, by this time, the first round of talks had been concluded and the first phase begun, and what a beginning. Some forty eight companies from thirteen countries had signed documents to participate formally in this world scale event. It was far easier to list those companies which did not participate than to list those which did. FOREIGN COMPANY INTEREST Why the rush by the world's oil industry to be involved in China? What was China offering which made everyone so anxious to join in? Again the answer is complex in detail, but principally involved a combination of factors which together caused this virtual stampede. Timing was a major element. Oil Companies, despite an ever increasing take by governments, were beginning to benefit. from the' rapid escalation of crude prices induced by OPEC and were looking for suitable areas to reinvest these funds. FATE, rather than planning, put Bob Morris into coal mining. He was a farmer's son, born at Plattsburg, Ohio, just 68 years ago (Feb. 28, 1878) though he could easily pass for ten years younger. Before he was ready for high school the family moved to Columbus, seat of Ohio State University, whose course in mining engineering attracted him because lie thought it the broadest of the engineering courses. He really wanted to be a steel metallurgist but it was a coal-mining company that offered him a job when he graduated, and this circumstance directed his entire future professional life. To. be sure it wasn't such a glorious opportunity so far as pay went -$40 a month-but his employer, the Modoc Coal & Mining Co., Modoc, Ohio, was developing a new shaft mine, thus offering some good experience. In 1902, after a year's experience, he was made superintendent of the property. Then in 1903 the Continental Coal Co. at Glouster, Ohio, offered him a better job as their chief engineer, which he retained until 1905, at the same time joining the A.I.M.E.

WELL known as an outstanding practical metallurgist, the Chairman of the Institute of Metals Division also possesses a rare combination of research and administrative abilities. Louis W. Kempf was born in Muskegon, Mich., on March 22, 1898. Following his graduation from high school, he obtained considerable experience in the automobile industry while employed by Continental Motors, the Studebaker Corp., and Dodge Brothers. He enlisted in the U. S. Army Signal Corps in 1917, and served overseas with an aviation unit. In 1919, Mr. Kempf entered the University of Michigan and earned both B.S. and M.S. degrees. While there he was elected to Tau Beta Pi, Phi Lambda Upsilon, Alpha Chi Sigma, and Gamma Alpha. In 1924, the Aluminum Co. of America secured his services as a research metallurgist. With a steady job he married Elizabeth Skelley in Cleveland in 1926. They have one son now seventeen. After six years Mr. Kempf was made manager of the Cleveland research division of the Aluminum Research Laboratories which position he held until last year. In 1945 he was promoted to assistant director of the Laboratories. He will direct research involving process metallurgy in Cleveland and New Kensington.

CURRENT widespread applications of aluminum in such industries as transportation, mining, and construction would have amazed the early proponents of its use, including Napoleon III, French Emperor Batik ill the middle nineteenth century, when aluminum was a precious metal, Napoleon had visions of making his army light and mobile through the use of aluminum for gun carriages, helmets, canteens, sabers, and similar articles. Whereas the emperor failed in his objectives, the modern Napoleons of industry have .been successful, and today aluminum finds its greatest applications wherever there is mass ill motion. Its lightness has made possible such modern marvels as the Union Pacific streamline trains, the Boeing and Douglas giant airships, and up-to-date mining equipment such as the new Calumet and Hecla mine skips.

Alexander N. Winchell, Butte, Mont. (communication to the Secretary): Mr. Spurr calls attention to the fact that an ore-deposit may be due to a succession of concentrations at different geological epochs. He cites an example of such a condition on Napoleon creek, a branch of Forty-Mile creek, Alaska. It will perhaps be of interest to call attention to another example of the same general character, not so remotely situated. The example referred to is located on Pole creek, a tributary of Cherry creek, in the extreme northeastern part of Madison county, Montana. An excellent geological map of this region is to be found in the Three Forks folio (No. 24) of the United States Geological Survey. According to this map, Pole creek, in its upper course, occupies the contact between the " Flathead " formation, which Peale correlates with the Middle and Lower Cambrian, and an area of gneisses and schists supposed
