While many mine tunnels are developed through ground that must be riddled with the sources of small (and larger) mining induced seismic events, recorded by the mine seismic monitoring systems, we do not see planar discontinuities classified as seismic sources in the geotechnical databases. Here we list criteria that may be useful to identify discontinuities in drill core which are dynamic slip surfaces, parts of mining induced seismic sources. Such shear rupture surfaces in core would generally be powdery, cohesionless, and rough on cm scale. Finely broken rock and rock flour may be found in the core boxes at the discontinuities. Slickensides would be soft (easily destroyed) and kinematically consistent with the local stress field. In some cases, a cross fabric would be present, orthogonal to the slickensides, being the intersections of en-echelon extension fractures, within the dynamic shear zones, with the shear zone walls.

The mineral processing engineer must have some knowledge of mineral identification, and the greater his knowledge in this field, the greater will be his potential to do his own specialty well. Most metal-bearing ores and industrial minerals require processing of some kind to produce a salable product or a material suitable for further processing. The types of treatment are many, but each one is aimed at separating a mineral or family of minerals from others. Obviously, then, it is basic to all mineral processing to identify the minerals present in the raw material and in intermediate and final products resulting from processing. Very often the mineral processing engineer will enter planning while exploration of a mineral prospect is going on. He will examine hand specimens, drill cores and cuttings, bulk samples, and materials in place. He must identify the valuable minerals, their occurrence and associations with other minerals, and the identity of diluents or host rock. An exact and detailed knowledge of the raw material will usually suggest the treatment processes that should be investigated in the development of the most suitable scheme for that particular raw material in that particular location. Physical properties of a mineral often lead directly to a process for separating that mineral from others. Some well-known examples of these are: magnetic separations for such minerals as magnetite, rutile, ilmenite; gravity separations for gold, silver, galena. cassiterite; flotation separation for most sulfides; distillation of mercury from cinnabar; and selective dissolution in specific solvents such as halite or sylvite in water, gold and silver in cyanide solutions, copper oxides, carbonates, sulfates and silicates in dilute sulfuric acid. These processes and many others are described in detail elsewhere in the Hand¬book and so it is not appropriate to give details here, except to emphasize that processing is aided greatly by complete mineral identi¬fication. Developing a treatment scheme for a new mineral discovery is an exciting assignment fag the mineral processing engineer, but much more of the usual work relates to quality control in existing plants. Here too, mineral identification is important. Some processing is aimed toward producing an end product which will meet exacting specifica¬tions regarding purity or allowable diluents. Public Law 91-190 - January I, 1970 states that, "The purposes of this Act are: To declare a national policy which will encourage productive and enjoyable harmony between man and his environment; to promote efforts which will prevent or eliminate damage to the environment and biosphere and stimulate the health and welfare of man; to enrich the understanding of the ecological systems and natural resources important to the Nation; and to establish a Council on Environmental Duality." The administrative aspects of this National Environmental Policy Act of 1969 have in essence established the requirement that all agencies of the Federal government assess the consequence of their actions with an Environmental Impact Statement. Furthermore, five states have already enacted environmental legislation, and others will surely follow. The Environmental Services Project Director for Dames and Moore has stated in the June issue of that company's publication, "Elements," that, "The nuclear power industry has perhaps been most affected to date by the Act [NEPAL but recent court decisions, legislative trends and general public concern will accelerate the spread of the Act's impact on other industries. Mining and petroleum are already involved in environmental affairs." There can be little doubt that within a very short time all environmental aspects of the minerals industry will be strictly regulated and monitored by some agency of Federal and/or state government. Indeed, it is probable that any future effort to extract natural resources will be contingent upon a favorable review of an Environmental Impact Statement. It is also quite possible that continuation of present operations will have to be justified on the basis of proof of an acceptable environmental impact. It is the objective of this paper to present some ways in which remote sensing technology can be applied toward an efficient collection of environmental data necessary for the preparation of an Environmental Impact Statement.

The rheological properties of five kaolins, isostatically pressurized at 4 x10 Pa for 10 min in the presence/absence of water, was determined. Under dry conditions, measured viscosity values either decreased or remained the same. After treatment under wet conditions, measured viscosity values were 30-60% higher at high shear and 50-60% higher at low shear. These results correlate with variations in nanomorphology and structural order. Dry compaction degraded kaolinite crystals but wet-pressing appeared to cause an increase in the proportion of euhedral crystallites and a decrease in deformed crystals. Dry compaction decreased the low-defect phase proportion (ldp), but in contrast, the ldp in wet-treated kaolins remained constant or increased. Results show that hydrous pressure treatment produces a change in viscosity of kaolin suspensions, yielding the potential for improving paper coating performance, whereas anhydrous pressure treatment decreased or maintained the viscosity.

Pricing for tantalum raw materials experienced explosive increases in the period 1978-1979, and-similar declines over 1980-1982. The causes for this are examined. Negative effects on the industry are highlighted. Analysis is provided of subsequent structural changes within the industry which minimize probability of future pricing excursions. Data on markets, sources of material, and outlines of concentration and extractive processes are reviewed. The conclusion is reached that expanded sources, future flat demand, and a broader international base of industry participants are principal forces in this restructure. Flat demand is reviewed as a function of increasing application of tantalum, but in more cost effective forms. This is driven by technical advance, notably in electronics applications.

In the past, a number of papers have been written on the use of various reagents as coal flotation frothers. For the most part, these papers have attempted to correlate the intrinsic chemical and physical properties of the reagents or reagent groups to the floatability of various fine coals. Because of the type or nature of evaluations made, chemically pure reagents were normally used. Generally, these reagents are unavailable in commercial quantities. Therefore, the results obtained with these reagents were usually limited in usefulness to the plant operator or metallurgist. This paper presents the results of a study in which commercially available forms of various reagents were used as flotation frothers. Flotation procedures which would conform in general to those employed in a large number of commercial coal flotation plants were utilized. The objective of the test was to compare these reagents on yield-selectivity-cost basis, that is, (1) the yields obtained, (2) the ash levels obtained, and (3) the reagent cost relating to these results.

INTRODUCTION Ambient concentrations of radon and its daughter products have been measured and analyzed by a number of investigators for a variety of purposes. Principal among these purposes have been: (1) descriptive, to characterize the distribution and changes in concentrations under various conditions; (2) research in the use of radon as a tracer gas in the study of atmospheric characteristics and motions, such as eddy mass transfer, diffusivity profiles, large scale circulations, and the like; and (3) the use of radon as an atmospheric tracer in exploration for uranium deposits.* This information forms the basic data for this paper and for its placing the ambient natural, or non-anthropogenic, radon concentrations into the perspective of ambient radon health standards and lung cancer risk calculations. To enable better understanding of some aspects of the ambient radon data, review and analysis is also performed on selected measurements of radon emanation or flux from the surface of the earth into the atmosphere. These measurements have generally been made for purposes similar to those for ambient radon, i.e., (1) description of radon emanation characteristics; or (2) to support and justify the use of ambient concentration measurements in atmospheric research; or (3) in exploration for uranium. Interest is also developing in the use of such measurements for earthquake prediction. In addition, to complete the perspective, brief examination is given to anthropogenic ambient and flux radon measurements related to the mining and milling of uranium, so that comparison can he made with the values from natural sources. As a frame of reference we cite here previous summaries of studies which have presented representative values and ranges of ambient concentrations and emanation rates. H. Israel, in the Compendium of Meterorology (1951), cites eight studies of ambient radon concentrations which we have selected as representative of non-anomalous continental values. Their means generally range from [0.06 to 0.15 pCi lit-1 with the smallest reported minimum of zero and the largest maximum 0.53 pCi lit-1. The overall mean is 0.10 with a standard deviation of 0.03 pCi lit-1. Means over oceans are much smaller, and the data scarcer, with only three values ranging from 0.0004 to 0.003 pCi lit-1 and a mean of 0.0016 pCi lit-1.] Thirteen studies from Israel's list were selected as representative of mountainous terrain. These data, except for the cases of higher elevations, frequently show significantly higher values than the average cases in non-mountainous terrain described-above. The averages range from 0.10 to 0.59 pCi lit-l; the smallest minimum is zero and the largest maximum is 9.2 pCi lit-1. The overall mean is 0.30 with a standard deviation of 0.17 pCi lit-1. Israel also cites five studies of radon emanation (flux) from the earth's surface. These show a mean of 0.40 pCi-2m-2 sec-1 and a range of from 0.21 to 0.74 pCi m-2 sec-1. Data on flux are naturally scarcer in the literature than data on ambient concentrations, because of the greater interest in and utility of the ambient information. In this paper we also give special consideration to observations of the variability in time and space of radon flux rates, and to the impact of these phenomena on the use of such data for a variety of purposes. NATURAL(NON-ANTHROPOGENIC)AMBIENT RADON CONCENTRATIONS We have examined the following reports for the data selected for this category; these studies were generally intended to describe radon characteristics in the atmosphere. Jonassen and Wilkening (1970); Bradley and Pearson (1970); Wilkening (1970); Lambert, et al (1970); Pearson and Moses (1966); and DickPeddie, et al (1974). Another set of studies which was reviewed was selected because the investigators made ambient radon measurements in the course of examining the use of radon as a tracer in atmospheric research. This set consists of: Israel and Horbert (1970); Carlson and Prospero (1972); Subramanian, et al (1977); Larson (1978); Cohen, et al (1972); Hosler (1966); and Shaffer and Cohen (1972). Finally, unpublished data from uranium exploration activities (Milly and Thayer, 1976) was analyzed. [Treating the ocean cases first, the mean values are generally consistent with those quoted earlier from Israel (0.0004 to 0.003 pCi lit-1); they range from 0.001 to 0.011 pCi lit-1, with 0.003 the most frequently reported value. Continental values, from eight studies, range in means from 0.07 to 0.41 pCi lit-1 (not including mineralized areas, or "uranium country", discussed later), with maxima as high as 2.4 pCi lit -l. For comparison, the means from Israel are 0.06 to 0.15 pCi lit-1, with a maximum of 0.53 pCi lit-1. 9.1-CLASSIFICATION OF MINERAL DEPOSITS AND ROCK MATERIALS After a mineral deposit has been discovered, delineated and evaluated, the next step is to select a mining method that is physically, economically and environ- mentally adaptable to recovering the mineral from the deposit. The term "mineral deposit" is used to denote a concentration of mineral (including rock and coal). Even where there is considerable past experience available, many of the critical design criteria must be determined utilizing only information obtained from an examination of exploratory drill core specimens. The factors that affect this selection are as follows: (1) the spatial characteristics of the deposit (size, shape, attitude and depth); (2) the physical (or mechanical) properties of the mineral deposit and surrounding rock; (3) ground water and hydraulic conditions; (4) economic factors, including grade of the ore. comparative mining costs and desired production rates; and (5) environmental factors, such as the preservation of the surface overlying the mine, and the prevention of air and water pollutants. Of these factors, the spatial characteristics of the deposit and the physical (or mechanical) properties of the mineral and surrounding rock limit the methods that can be employed to mine it. Six types of mineral deposits are recognized, as follows: 1. Massive-A deposit of considerable lateral and vertical extent in which mineralization (or ore) is relatively uniformly distributed. Disseminated copper ores are typical deposits. Dome salt also is included in this classification. 2. Bedded or Tabular-A mineral deposit that parallels the stratification, most often in sedimentary rock, usually laterally extensive, and of limited thickness. Most coal measures and some evaporite mineral deposits (e.g., potash) fall in this class. 3. Narrow Vein-A zone or belt of mineralization (ore) typically long, narrow (less than 10 ft), often dipping steeply, and usually lying within boundaries separating it from neigh- boring rock. Many gold and other metallic minerals occur in narrow veins. 4. Wide Vein-As defined under narrow vein except that the vein thickness is greater than 10 ft. 5. Lentictclar or Pocket-An isolated ore body, or an enrichment of limited vertical and horizontal extent in a massive, bedded or vein deposit. Lead, zinc and iron ores often occur in this type of deposit. 6. Placer-A surface or near-surface deposit, usually tabular and may be of consider- able areal extent, containing mineral particles (e.g., gold, platinum) in detritus (e.g., sand, gravel). The rock materials associated with mineral deposits are classified as follows: 1. Detritus-Sediments and other accumulations of solid particles produced by the mechanical and/or chemical disintegration of rocks, and usually having a low cohesive strength and very low compressive strength (e.g.. soil, sand, gravel, alluvium, playa). 2. Jointed and Fractured-Unbonded-A rock mass, often occurring on or near the surface or in fault zones, in which the joints or fractures contain alteration or decomposition

A prototype expert system for planning and designing an underground coal mine has been developed in a doctoral study at the University of Kentucky. This prototype expert system for underground coal mine planning and designing consists of a number of knowledge bases concerning different elements of design (e.g., ground control, excavation and bulk materials handling, ventilation, etc.). The objective of this paper is to present the development process of the ventilation design knowledge base for this prototype. This expert system prototype is intended for building an instructional expert system for underground coal mine design. Therefore, the undergraduate course on mine design has been used as the basis, for its development. Because of the availability of knowledge and expertise, this research study has been limited to development of a knowledge model for the Appalachian coal mining region.

In order to meet federal air pollution guidelines, it is necessary to remove a considerable quantity of sulfur from many North American coals. This may be accomplished by oxidizing the sulfur to water soluble forms, followed by washing the coal. Selective oxidation of the various sulfur forms can be accomplished through the use of a variety of types of bacteria. In this paper, the various bacteria and their requirements are described, and processes using bacteria to remove coal sulfur are discussed.

Introduction Metallurgical accounting practices have been revolutionized over the past 15 years by the introduction of low cost personal computers and easy- to-use spreadsheet software. The Chimney Creek metallurgical accounting system takes full advantage of these advances. Data is provided by a PLC-based process control system, IBM data logging, operator logsheets and assay results from an automatatic plant sampling system. The data is organized and stored in an IBM PS/2 system using Lotus 123 and customized accounting programs to provide a comprehensive information management system. Metallurgical accounting for gold plants should ideally provide information for the following: a) Gold production accounting b) Day-to-day process control and operation c) Metallurgical evaluation and process optimization The Chimney Creek system provides all of these while overcoming specific accounting problems presented by SAG milling a coarse feed, grinding in cyanide and dump leaching run-of-mine material. Process description Gold Fields' Chimney Creek mine is located 47 miles northeast of Winnemucca, Nevada, at the northern end of the Osgood Mountains. Ore is processed by a combination of dump leaching and milling processes. The dump leach operation treats approximately 2.0 million tons per year of low grade ore (0.030 oz/ton). Run-of-mine ore is top dumped in 40 foot high pads. The use of three solution ponds for leaching enables an intermediate solution to be recirculated to the leach pad to reduce the pregnant solution flowrate and increase gold tenor of solution to the carbon-in-column (CIC) recovery circuit. Gold recovery is approximately 65% by this method. The milling process employs a SAG mill-ball mill grinding circuit to treat 900,000 tons per year at an average grade of 0.19 oz/ton. The ore is crushed to minus 12" in a jaw crusher prior to feeding the SAG mill. Cyanide is added to the grinding circuit to start gold dissolution as early as possible. After grinding, leaching of the ore is continued in a unique two-stage counter current decantation circuit 1 with 12 hours of leaching between stages . 85% of the soluble gold is recovered from the first stage thickener overflow in carbon columns (CIC). The second stage underflow is treated in a scavenger carbon-in-pulp (CIP) plant. Ultimate gold recovery is over 95%. Loaded carbon from both the dump leaching and milling processes is pressure stripped by hot cyanide solution and gold is recovered from the resulting solution by zinc precipitation. The precipitate is retorted for mercury removal and smelted into bullion. The plant flowsheet appears in Figure 1. Data collection Data for daily metallurgical accounting is obtained from three sources: a) Plant sampling b) Process control system c) Operator logsheets All of the data collection for metallurgical accounting is based around the 12-hour shift operating schedule. Sampling All critical sampling for gold production accounting is performed by automatic samplers (Figure 2). Heath & Sherwood two-stage sampling systems are used for sampling all slurry streams (cyclone overflow, CIP feed and CIP tails). The automatic sampler consists of a pneumatically operated primary sample cutter and a continuous rotary secondary splitter. The cyclone overflow and CIP tails are the most critical samples since these are used to calculate gold into and out of the plant on a shiftly basis. Development of the Twin Buttes mine entailed the largest known preproduction stripping job in the history of mining. It linked earthmovers and conveyor belts in a new approach to development of a pit that may reach, or even exceed, dimensions of 1 x 1-1/2 miles at the surface and go as deep as 1800 feet. The orebody to be stripped was covered by an average of 460 feet of alluvial gravels, which presented an initial stripping job of great magnitude. The initial pit layout and the original time schedule established early in 1965 called for the excavation and disposal of about 250,000,000 tons of alluvial overburden before the end of 1969. Allowing about a year for equipment delivery, this schedule left four years to do the job averaging about 62-1/2 million tons per year. In 1964 when The Anaconda Company undertook the development of Twin Buttes, it was recognized that special planning was necessary for the disposal of waste material and tailings. Environ- mental control was a prime consideration and is particularly sensitive in the Twin Buttes area due to the proximity to residential developments. Disposal of the 250,000,000 tons of alluvium, as well as future rock and tailing waste material, presented a problem which Anaconda engineers resolved by designing a plan to spread out much of the alluvium over an extended area, including a massive 11- 1/2 mile dike system which will impound mill tailing in three basins. This paper presents the results of a laboratory investigation aiming to verify the concept of co-mingling of waste rock with layers of compacted tailings. Overall, co-mingling is expected to delay the onset and reduce the magnitude of acid mine drainage (AMD) production in waste rock. To denionstrate the efficiency of the method proposed, five different column tests have been set-up. Columns were fed with deionized water at the top and drainage waters were collected and analyzed. Bacteria counts were done on the tailings and waste rock after the column tests. Permeability in saturated conditions and capillary parameters were measured for the tailings. The results obtained show that the co-mingling method would be effective in mitigating AMD by maintaining nearly water-saturated conditions in compacted tailings, thus reducing oxygen supply in waste rock by preventing thermal air convection and minimizing oxygen advection and diffusion.

This paper reported the calculation of the reaction heat in titanium-bearing blast furnace slag (abbreviated as TBFS)-H2SO4 system based on estimation of thermodynamic data of CaTiAl2O6 by mechanical mixture model. The thermodynamic analysis indicated that CaTiAl2O6 was more stable than the corresponding ternary oxides as CaO·TiO2, CaO·Al2O3, and Al2O3·TiO2. TBFS-H2SO4 system was highly exothermic since all of the reactions involved in the system were exothermic. For example, the increase of temperature from 25 to 200°C led to the increase of the release of the reaction heat in TBFS (100.0g)-H2SO4 system from 181.28 to 189.73kJ. Eighty-five to 90%of the reaction heat in TBFS-H2SO4 system was contributed by the reactions among CaTiAl2O6, CaTiO3, CaMgSi2O6, and H2SO4.

The results of using a simple analytical solution and a relatively complex numerical model to estimate ground-water inflow to an open pit mine are compared. The analytical solution assumes lateral, radial flow to a fully penetrating pit in an idealized confined aquifer, whereas the numerical model simulates fully three-dimensional flow to a partially penetrating pit from a water table aquifer. The latter is obviously a more realistic simulation of the problem, but the former method is significantly easier to use, Comparison of the results obtained with the two methods for some typical hydrogeologic conditions encountered in mining yields ratios between them in the range of 0.15 to 0.60. These values can be used as a coefficient in the Pit Flow analytical solution to produce reasonable estimates of in-flow even when there are significant differences from the idealized conditions implicit in its application.

The Paranapanema Group was created in February 1996 when a group formed by the Brazilian pension funds acquired four companies dealing with nonferrous metals. The new Paranapanema Group, basically related to the tin and construction business, became the sole Brazilian primary copper producer, the second zinc producer and one of the most important producers of copper products, mainly tubes and fittings. To put together such different companies, managed before by family groups and with different cultures and principles, was and still is a big challenge. The strategy of developing and consolidating it as an homogeneous group is based in three pillars: an increase in production, quality and technological improvements on products and market mix and a permanent cost reduction program, using all the potential synergies founded.

A two level risk analysis procedure which is specially designed for use in river environments, is presented. The first level risk assessment (Level I) is often adequate for purposes of most projects, and entails hazard assessment, exposure identification, consequence estimation, and risk characterization. Two unique features of the method are the Composite Hazard Rating system, which is used in hazard assessment, and a formalized decision model for risk characterization. The risk characterization procedure provides information on the acceptability of risks, can be used to distinguish between the relative severity of risks, and to evaluate whether more advanced risk assessment would be required.

In the last decade, Meloy developed the IAC - Interfacial Area Conservation - model of liberation. His work included three conservation laws and a mathematical tool called textural transform. This paper reviews the developments and applications of the IAC model. From simple spherical two-phase locked particles with planar interfaces, the model has been developed for curved interfaces and solids with complex textures. Moreover, complex shaped particles and ores having more than two phases have been considered. The model equations give the degree of liberation of the component phases for different ore textures – platy blocky and acicular - as well as for different sue distributions. Lockedness profiles are offered for defining the middlings composition, so that from the model it is possible to predict washability curves.

"Faced with the serious managerial situations and diverse conditions and needs for mine safety, occupational health and environmental stewardship in Chinese mining communities, an evidence-based approach is proposed for the management of mine safety, health and environment integrity. By the proposed approach, tangible and effective scientific evidence should be collected and accumulated, and the authenticity, accuracy and applicability of the evidence should be assessed to form an evidence-based approach for characterizing mine safety, health and environmental hazards and risks from multidimensional perspectives. The results are then used to formulate diverse safety, health and environment functional requirements. In an evidence-based approach, the evidence is combined with the professional experiences and the actual economic and technological situations, availability and affordability of a mine. This approach is helpful to establish scientific, reasonable, acceptable and effective solutions for identifying and mitigating hazards and improving the level of mine safety, health and environment integrity of mining operations.Introduction / Background In recent years, economic reforms have opened China's economy so that Chinese society has rapidly modernized. Along with this advancement, the exploitation and utilization of mineral resources continues to be active and the scale of mining production continues to increase, which has created a deterioration in resource reserves and as well as the general condition of mining technology. There are many hazards and safety problems in mine production and occupational health as well as in the community environment in China’s mining industry. These problems threaten the security of China's mines and present serious obstacles and challenges to the industry and the government. According to the statistics from the State Administration of Work Safety Supervision, there were 50,500 mine safety incidents in China between 2001 and 2013, which consisted of 31,439 coal mine safety accidents and 19,061 non-coal mine safety accidents, resulting in 30 deaths (Qin 2014). At the same time, mineral dust and radioactive material from mine production processes have increased the morbidity rate of silicosis and cancer in mining workers."
