The various methods of detecting fires and heatings in collieries are reviewed. The methods described range from those relying principally on human senses to sophisticated methods employing infrared technology to detect traces of the products of oxidation and combustion. The advantages and disadvantages of various gases employed as indicator gases for the early detection of heatings and fires are discussed, and recommendations are made in this regard. The operation of a modern infrared carbon monoxide detection system is described, and the differences in operation and application of telemetric systems, tube-bundle systems, and up cast-shaft monitors are discussed In conclusion, some indication is given of the capital outlay required for typical early-detection systems.

High pressure grinding roll (HPGR) technology is used in an increasingly diverse range of applications, predominantly iron ore, gold and diamonds. KHD Humboldt Wedag HPGRs are applied world-wide, and consistently prove to be well designed and reliable operating units, with their performance meeting the pre-set standards. This publication summarizes some of the features and experiences for recent applications in treatment of copper ore, coarse iron ore, and gold ore. Summary data of roll surface wear life and operating data are given, together with operational observations. In addition, effects of feed segregation and truncated feed are discussed, as well as the implications of a product recycle flow sheet.

An analytical framework is formulated to assist mining companies in assessing the relative merits of mineral exploration and acquisition strategies. The anticipated costs, risks, and returns of each strategy are conceptualised using decision trees. Economic criteria - expected net present value, expected return per unit of investment, and the probability of success - for each strategy are derived(from the appropriate decision tree network. Application of the analytical framework is illustrated using the example of a medium-size company in the Canadian base metal sector.

This paper presents the results of research on the development and application of a custom-made truck cycle and delay automated data collection system (TCD-ADCS) in a surface coal mining. Truck cycle and delay field data are locally stored in trucks and then synchronized and replicated through a wireless network into a centralized server containing an already-developed integrated production management system (IPMS). The system relies on motion sensing and distance travelled in order to automatically define the cycle starting/ending points, cycle time, position, and delay time. Connectivity and communication between loading equipment and trucks are also established. Communication between the equipment operators and TCD-ADCS system is via a user-friendly graphic interface. The hardware used for the development of this system consists of a rugged touch-screen personal computer, 2.4 GHz radio transmitter antenna, and a commercial GPS receiver. "Over the last six years, the Kansanshi copper-gold mine has continued to process significant quantities of complex transitional mixed ores. Initially, the ore treated came predominantly from accumulated stockpiles. Subsequently, the feed source shifted primarily to freshly mined ore that generally showed less tarnish with better flotation kinetics, but with the downside of lower concentrate grades. A number of changes were made to improve the efficiency of the rougher circuit and quality of concentrate produced. These changes were as a result of initial mineralogical studies and laboratory flotation test work that were discussed at length in a previous paper1. Salient among the recommendations adopted as a result of previous work were increased circuit capacity and a modified configuration to increase the residence time and the number of sulphidization stages. These modifications were completed and commissioned in 2011. This, however, resulted in significantly low rougher concentrate grades and a below-specification final concentrate product. This was due primarily to higher mass pulls from the extended rougher bank with multiple concentrate discharge streams, and which necessitated an enlarged cleaning capability. The extra cleaning capacity came on stream in 2014. Of note was the development of a recovery model, based on the strong correlation between the total copper and acid-soluble copper ratio, as a tool for monitoring plant performance. IntroductionThe Kansanshi mine, the largest copper mine in Africa, is 80% owned by Kansanshi Mining plc, a subsidiary of First Quantum Minerals. The remaining 20% is owned by the state through the parastatal Zambia Consolidated Copper Mines Ltd (ZCCM). The mine is located approximately 10 km north of the town of Solwezi and 180 km to the northwest of the Copperbelt town of Chingola. The mine has been in commercial operation since 2005."

"Understanding the influence of feed material mineral assemblage on spiral separation is paramount for the successful and consistent operation of a spiral plant. Plant stability is required to maintain high recovery of valuable heavy minerals (VHM). Standard material analysis methods used in the heavy mineral industry to evaluate spiral separation behaviour are unable to quantify performance differences in the case of large variations in feed assemblage. This study illustrates a systematic approach to evaluate spiral separation performance. This technique was applied on a four-stage spiral plant. The performance information was used in a circuit simulation to clearly illustrate the importance of correct setting of the spiral splitter position and resulting spiral mass loading to ensure optimal circuit stability and maximum VHM recovery.IntroductionHeavy mineral sands deposits generally consist of naturally fine-grained, free-flowing sand due to the way in which the deposit was formed. The size of the heavy minerals market is roughly 8 Mt/a of zircon and titanium combined (Iluka, 2013). If an average combined feed grade of 5% zircon and titanium and an average combined overall product recovery of 80% are assumed, the resulting run-of-mine feed tons that would require primary spiral beneficiation is 200 Mt/a. The number of spirals required for the processing of this material, assuming 6500 operating hours per annum, an average of 2 t/h per start, and the same number of rougher spirals as other duty spirals, is over 30 000 spirals for the heavy mineral sands business alone. These numbers clearly illustrate the importance of the spiral in the heavy mineral industry.The aim of a spiral plant in the primary processing value chain of a heavy mineral process is to reject non-valuable quartz (a light mineral) from various valuable heavy minerals (VHM). The product from the spiral plant is a heavy mineral concentrate that has a reasonable grade (more than 90% heavy minerals) at a reasonable heavy mineral recovery (greater than 90%). This benchmark is fairly easy to achieve if all the mineral particles are well liberated (as in the case free-flowing sand), the feed is properly deslimed (-45 µm fraction removed to less than 5% of the solids mass), and the spirals are fed within design solids concentration (water to solids ratio) and design spiral load (dry tons per hour per start)."

The paper deals with hydraulic transport of thin and dense slurries. Based on mathematical modelling of three-phase flow, dynamic properties of the systems for pumping of thin slurry are solved. Theoretical calculations were experimentally verified both at the testing hall and in real operation. For thin slurry (e.g. bauxite slurry), a three-chamber hydrohoist with float is used. Dense slurry (e.g. ash and water) is transported from the power plant to a deposit site by means of a three-chamber hydrohoist with sealed separator (piston).

Pipelines are used extensively in industry to convey various products. Internal corrosion of pipelines can lead to perforation and leakage of the product. A growing problem, not often accurately recognized, is internal corrosion of pipelines caused by bacteria. Microbiologically-induced corrosion (MIC) refers to corrosion caused by a variety of micro-organisms. This form of corrosion is not widely recognized in many industries, although it is widespread and causes many corrosion problems in pipelines, both internal and external. Sulphate-reducing bacteria (SRB) are responsible for the bulk of the corrosion problems caused by MIC. Corrosion caused by SRB is found extensively in water pipelines conveying raw, potable and waste water, as well as in pipelines conveying slurries. This problem also occurs in pipelines conveying crude oil. This paper describes internal corrosion problems of slurry pipelines caused by bacteria and outlines mitigation methods to improve slurry pipeline integrity, thereby extending the life of such pipelines.

The design and operation of a double- V compartment vertical-flow settler by B. N. SOUTAR, B.Sc. (Mech. Eng.) Wits. (Visitor) This paper describes the development of a vertical-flow settler for underground pumping installations in the mines of Gold Fields of South Africa Ltd. The recommended settler employs the principle of 'dynamic filtration': the solids that are in suspension in mine water are filtered through a stable horizontal bed of flocculated particles, a technique that was established in about 1958.

The leaching of pyrolusite in acidic ferous sulphate solution was studied so that the important factors governing the kinetics of the reaction could be determined. The reaction is very rapid, and was monitored by continuous measurement and logging of the redox potential in solution by use of a microcomputer. The relationship between redox potential and manganese extraction was established empiricaly for each set of conditions by the use of a technique in which a calibration run was conducted in paralel with each leaching run. The study involved a number of batch leaching runs, and demonstrated that, of the variables investigated, only the initial ferous ion concentration and the reaction temperature afect the rate of manganese extraction. The final extraction did not vary. The reaction was modeled from the results by use of the shrinking-core model and Britan's activation-energy model. The later was found to provide a significantly better fit to the data.

As you pointed out, furnace power factor (and consequently transformer MVA rating) depends upon the inductive reactance, and so it is desirable to design for the lowest possible value of this parameter. The further introduction on the primary side of the transformer of capacitors, whether in shunt or in series, increases the network power factor but does not alter the furnace power factor; that is, the phase angle between electrode to- hearth voltage and current remains unchanged. Wet stirred media milling is a widely applied grinding process in the field of mineral processing to produce <10 μm ground materials. In this paper, the results of wet stirred media milling of different Ti, Fe and Cu-oxide and phosphate minerals are presented. During the experimental work, grinding of ilmenite, vivianite, hematite and cuprite was carried out in a continuous operation wet stirred media mill. During the experiments, the particle size distribution and specific surface area of the ground materials were determined after a certain grinding time, as well as measuring the specific grinding energy, thereby determining the grinding kinetics of the different minerals. The measurement results showed the differences and similarities in the grindability of the individual minerals. Nano particulate vivianite, hematite and ilmenite was successfully manufactured in a stirred media mill; however cuprite was characterised as the coarsest final product for the same grinding circumstances. Orebody modelling and reserve estimation are now subject to sophisticated procedures, but folded stratiform and stratabound deposits present particular problems in transforming coordinates of samples and blocks into their correct relative positions prior to deformation. In this paper an approach is taken whereby a geologically interpreted reference plane is used as a control. The study area is the Rio Tinto Minera copper mine near Santiago de Compostela, Spain. The transformation procedure on the &apos;unfolded&apos; state is described, its limitations assessed and advantages considered.

South Africa is the third-largest supplier of coal on the world&apos;s export markets after Australia and the USA, and the second-largest supplier of bituminous steam coal following Australia. There are many Similarities between the coal industries of South Africa and those of Australia and the USA, in contrast to the coal industries in Europe. For South Africa to maintain a competitive position on the export markets, it must continue to compete against these two countries. It is therefore important that the performance of the loca1 coal industry should against that of the Australian and US coal industries. Although financial performance is the major criterion, financial information is not easily obtained, and the paper therefore uses employee productivity in the form of tonnes per man year as a means of comparison. The paper reviews recent trends in the level of production and numbers of employees prior to review1ng the productivity. The influence on productivity of some mining methods is highlighted. It is realized that published information (information available within the public domain) can contain anomalies, but every effort is made to compare data of a similar type. Notwithstanding possible inaccuracies, it is shown that South African coal-De productivity lags far behind that of Australia and the USA. The significance of the difference is that the South African coal industry is able to apply overseas practices and procedures that have been shown to give improved performance, and that the increased use of more productive extraction techniques has limited application.

AngloGold Ashanti?s Obuasi Mine, in Ashanti Province, Ghana, operates a plant utilizing bacterial oxidation technology. The mineralization consists predominately of arsenopyrite with gold associated in the sulphides. The plant was commissioned in 1994, at that time was the largest BIOX® plant in the world, and has been operated by AngloGold Ashanti since 2004. The constraints identified in the plantwere the flotation capacity, BIOX® feed size and disruptions to the BIOX® process. This paper focuses on the practical steps that were followed in order to increase the recovery of the plant. The original plant design was based on a head grade of 10 g/t and an overall recovery of 86.5%. In 2007 the plant was operating at an overall recovery of 79.2% at a head grade of 5.6 g/t and this has improved to 80.6% at a head grade of 5.8 g/t during the last quarter of 2008. Additional improvement to 81.5% are expected by the end of April 2009. Improvements that have been implemented include: ?Replacement of the regrind mill ?Installation of additional float capacity ?Installation of a scavenging circuit ?Installation of a complete water treatment plant. In addition we have focused on the effect of the water circuit on the BIOX® process and the steps involved in correcting this problem. The water circuit was originally designed as an open circuit and through environmental considerations the circuit was closed towards the end of 2007. The bacteria in the BIOX® are particularly sensitive to cyanide and cannot tolerate levels above 0.05ppm (free cyanide), this required extensive modifications to the water circuit. The plant improvement project is ongoing and the current scope of work should be complete by the end of April 2009. Further research and development work is being planned, which includes a ?white rot bacteria? that can consume the preg-robbing carbon and oxidize the sulphide in a single pass.

A short survey is given of the Iron Age smelting sites and smelting furnaces that have been found in South Africa. An attempt is made to classify South African smelting furnaces by the inclusion of functional characteristics such as the numbers and positions of tuyeres. An affinity is suggested between the Venda (eastern Transvaal) type of furnace and an East African type. The principles of the smelting process in South African Iron Age furnaces and the characteristics of the smelting products are discussed. Results of metallographic and chemical analyses of 19 iron specimens found at South African sites are given and compared with those from sites in Zimbabwe-Rhodesia, Mocambique, and Nigeria. The carburization and steeling of iron during primitive smelting and forging are discussed.

Vanadium slag production in the shaking ladles started in April 1968, steelmaking was begun in July 1968 and the first continuously cast blocks were produced soon after on the 29th July, 1968. Nominal monthly production of over 20 000 tons was reached in seven months and by December 1970 about 12 000 heats were cast and a monthly production of 35000 tons has been achieved.
