"On a développé un procédé qui donne une fonte (2,3% C, 0,07% V) du V2O5 (99%) et un rutile synthétique (94% TiO2) à partir d'un minerai, dont les réserves au Québec sont importantes. Le procédé comprend les opérations suivantes: 1) la concentration magnétique du minerai (30% Fe, 9% TiO2 et 0,65% V2O5) pour produire un concentré (65% Fe, 7% TiO2 et 1,6% V2O5); 2) le smeltage du concentré aggloméré dans un four à arc, sans fondant, pour produire une fonte et une scorie (30% FeO, 40% TiO2 et 8,0% V2O5) qui contient plus de 95% du vanadium et du titane présents dans le concentré; 3) le grillage alcalin (37% Na2CO3) de la scorie suivi d'une lixiviation à l'eau et de la précipitation de l'hexavanadate d'ammonium à partir du filtrat; 4) la lixiviation du résidu par l'acide sulfurique pur ou usagé pour produire un rutile synthétique. Un estimé préliminaire de la valeur économique du projet laisse croire à sa rentabilité à la condition que l'investissement pour le smeltage soit inférieur à environ 400$/tonne de fer.IntroductionLes gisements de magnétites titanifères sont nombreux dans le monde. Ils consistent en une magnétite étroitement liée a l'ilménite, La teneur trop élevée en TiO2 empêche l'exploitation de ces gisements pour la production de fer. Cependant, dans certains cas, la magnétite a une teneur intéressante en vanadium qui peut rendre l'exploitation de ces gisements rentable. Aujourd'hui, les magnétites titanifères constituent la plus importante source de production de vanadium. On estime qu'environ 70% du vanadium produit provient de ces sources."

THE present century has witnessed an amazing transformation in the uses of limestone. From being mainly a structural material, a role it has played since the beginning of civilization, it has become one of the in-dispensable raw materials for use in the great chemical and metallurgical industries that play such a vital part in the economic life of the nations today. Its uses have become so diversified and numerous that it enters, directly or indirectly, into nearly every phase of modern life. In this introductory paper it is proposed merely to outline the general usefulness of limestone and to point out some of its salient features, and to leave any detailed discussion of uses to the papers that follow. The term limestone as herein used embraces all kinds from the variety known as high-calcium limestone, which is composed almost entirely of calcite, to the dolomitic variety, composed largely or entirely of the mineral dolomite. Lime is simply calcined limestone and, in considering the uses of limestone, the uses of lime should also be included, particularly in view of the fact that, in many processes, it is possible to use limestone in either the raw or the calcined state.

An investigation into the use of Tetronics International’s thermal plasma technology based pyrometallurgical smelting process for the recovery of both platinum and rhenium was conducted. 1000 kg of Pt-Re catalysts containing 0.36 wt% Pt and 0.21 wt% Re was blended with fluxing agents, reducing agents and an iron based collector metal precursor and then fed into a plasma furnace over five individual trials at Tetronics International’s facility in Swindon, UK. Both platinum and rhenium partitioned to an iron rich collector metal phase in the furnace, which formed in-situ and accumulated beneath a less dense slag phase, derived from the inorganic substrate of the catalyst, and was easily separable. The levels of Pt and Re concentration achieved in the iron collector made it suitable for subsequent final refining. Technical recovery efficiencies of =98% for both platinum and rhenium were achieved and the concentrations of the metals in the recovered metal bullion were 2.23 wt% Pt and 1.35 wt% Re.

Experimental determination of the response of an AG/SAG mill treating two components of significantly different impact resistance is challenging for two main reasons: firstly, small scale laboratory tests have yet to be confirmed as valid representations of the full scale milling environment, and secondly pilot plant testing requires 10-20 tonnes of ore per scenario which precludes the use of drill core, rendering the process very expensive. In order to mitigate these difficulties, modelling was considered as a potential way forward. However, as the JKSimMet AG/SAG model currently has no capacity to simulate the interaction of two ore types with differing impact resistance, density and/or feed size distributions, an alternative modelling approach was developed. This approach aims to essentially calibrate the AG/SAG process under a set of given conditions, for which survey data and the ore properties of the main components in the feed blend already exist. This paper describes a new conceptual model, which provides a simplified approach for investigating the multi-component behaviour of two ores of differing hardness/SG in a given AG/SAG milling environment, and which can potentially be used for scale-up from laboratory/pilot testwork and geometallurgical estimation of throughput.

"Arsenic is widely known as a toxic element for humans, animals and plants. Because of more stringent wastewater standards not only in Japan but also around the world, research for appropriate and efficient treatment method for arsenic is becoming increasingly important. Coprecipitation or adsorption process using ferrihydrite is widely implemented for dilute As(V) removal from wastewater. In this study, the sorption mechanism of dilute As(V) with ferrihydrite in coprecipitation or adsorption process was investigated. To accomplish this, we conducted batch experiments of coprecipitation or adsorption and compared these results for sorption isotherm and zeta potential. These experimental results showed that sorption mechanism in coprecipitation process depends on the initial As/Fe molar ratio; simple twodimensional adsorption onto the surface of ferrihydrite when the initial As/Fe molar ratio was < 0.4, and some three-dimensional uptake with ferrihydrite when it was = 0.4. We also evaluated the sorption mechanim by analysis of X-ray diffraction (XRD) and X-ray Absorption Fine Structure (XAFS). XRD or XAFS spectra showed that surface precipitation of amorphous ferric arsenate was formed when the initial as/Fe molar ratio was = 0.4, beyond the thermodynamic bulk precipitation range for ferric arsenate.INTRODUCTIONArsenic is toxic to animals, including humans, and long-term exposure to arsenic via drinkingwater causes cancer of the skin, lungs, urinary bladder, and kidneys, as well as other effects on the skin such as changes in pigmentation and thickening (Ghosha et al., 2008). Elevated levels of arsenic are often present in the environment as a result of the weathering and dissolution of minerals as well as in response to numerous anthropogenic sources including the discharge of mine wastes, coal fly ash and the use of pesticides that contain arsenic (Nriagu, 1994; Singh et al., 2007). Indeed, the potential for arsenic exposure affects many people, as evidenced by several million people in Bangladesh and India being at risk of exposure via drinking water obtained from contaminated groundwater sources (Ahmed, 2001).Acid mine drainage (AMD) containing arsenic is a global environmental problem (Dold, 2008; Liang and Thomson, 2008) that also affects Japan, which has many abandoned or closed mines that have been generating AMD for the last few decades (Masuda et al., 2008). Several such facilities in Japan produce AMD containing dilute concentrations of arsenic that exceed Japanese effluent standards (0.1 mg/dm3) (METI, 2006). For example, AMD from the abandoned Horobetsu sulfur mine, the largest AMD source in Japan, contains approximately 10 mg/dm3 arsenic."

"Concurrent with the continuing demise of many Canadian mining towns is the rise of a new method of providing remote mine sites with a workforce. This is the Long Distance Commute (LDC) which uses commuter labour and requires no permanent settlements to support the mine operation. It provides a flexible and cost effective method of operation to the industry and relieves both governments and industry of the expense of building and maintaining mining towns. However, little attention has been paid to the effect on workers or their families of the LDC work schedule whereby workers spend a fixed number of days at the site followed by a fixed number of days at home. Off-shore oil rig experience would indicate that negative social impacts may be expected. Research leading to an understanding of the problems involved seems to be indicated. One innovative suggestion has been to use already established but dying mining towns as workforce pick-up points for new LDC operations further north.BackgroundUntil recently, mine towns were considered as a necessary component of mine development. This was a natural symbiosis resulting from the need to provide workforce accommodation close to isolated mine sites. The early mine communities in Canada were often just a huddle of shacks around a head frame. Gradually mining companies began to provide housing which varied from basic duplexes and quads in grid pattern layout to professionally planned and designed towns, either model company towns or the more recent suburbs-in-the-bush, the so-called ""instant towns"" of the postWorld War II era of resource development. The improvement in accommodation reflected the need to attract a stable workforce as mine operations became more sophisticated. City amenities were expected and offered in these mine towns as a way of encouraging a permanent community of mining families. Indeed in towns like Manitouwdage, Schefferville, and others, it was not unusual to find a significant percentage of two- and three-generation families apparently providing the permanent mining communities so desired by mine operators."

La propriété a été explores anterieurement a maintes reprises depuis les années 1930, parfois jusqu'aux travaux souterrains, notamment par les groupes Mooshla, Warrenmac et Westwood Cadillac ainsi que par Silver Stack Mines.Ces zones auriferes se situent a l'intérieur de larges halos (jusqu'à 1,000 m x 400 in) de pyrite disséminée (2-5%) dans des tufs a lapilli et des agglomerate acides montrant des concentrations locales de pyrite. La zone 1, découverte en vérifiant par sondage une anomalie E.M., coincide avec une de ces concentrations de pyrite et la teneur en or est ici proportionnelle a la pyrite. Ce secteur se distingue par l'intensité de l'altération en séricite. La zone 2, qui s'étend sur près de 600 m, se situe dans un agglomérat acids, avec une faible teneur en pyrite, et montre de fines veinules de quartz-carbonate.Du point de vue géophysique, aucune methods ne donne des résultats probants: la polarisation provoquée montre de tree grandee anomalies correspondant aux halos de pyrite, tandis que lee concentrations de pyrite détectées par les méthodes E.M. (VLF ou EMH) sont loin d'être toutes aurifères. Les relevés magnétiques aident a établir la structure la où un certain contraste de susceptibilité magnétique est present. Les essais minéralurgiques préliminaires indiquent que la concentration de Bette mineralisation aurifère ne présentera pas de problems majeur."

Since the start up of the IMMSA electrolytic zinc refinery in 1982, the dissolved iron coming from the acid attack of the ferrites has been precipitated by the jarosite process. At the beginning of operations, sodium jarosite was produced; however, the plant was converted to ammonium jarosite in 1990. The final storage of the residue is on the company&apos;s property adjacent to the plant, over the natural surface of the land. Before the construction of the refinery, several studies were done in order to evaluate the characteristics of the ground, such as, permeability, underground water localization, etc. The results showed that the site was adequate for the storage of this kind of material. For several years, the jarosite residue was filtered on rotary drum filters and was sent as a pulp to the storage area for settling. The water from the storage pond was recycled to the re-pulp tank for the jarosite residue. These filters were replaced in 1999 by an automated filter press. Since then, the jarosite residue has had a lower water content, and the zinc recovery improved. At present, a second filter press for the jarosite circuit is in the acquisition process to diminish the soluble zinc content in the residue from the present value of 2% to < 1% Zn.

"The in pit dam construction and utilities relocation, known as the East Mine Corridor Relocation (EMCR) project, was developed to extend the life of the east side of the Base Mine pit by two veal&apos;s. This will result in the recovery of an additional 80 million barrels of oil and delay expenditures associated with the opening of the North Mine by two years. To accomplish this, a large in pit earth structure was required to provide a new embankment foundation for relocating a public highway, four powerlines, a natural gas back-up pipeline, a substation, and a conveyor train. This structure would also he required as a temporary dam 10 contain mature fine tails on the west side until mining is completed in the east mine corridor area, that will then be filled with fluid.The in pit dam, known as The Highway Berm, is 2.5 km long, 63 m high and has 42 million m3 of engineered soil added to the already existing end-dumped soil volumes. To complete the design and construction of a structure of this magnitude, in the very short time frame of two-and-a-half years, presented many new challenges. The main challenges faced were: designing while construction was ongoing; designing without the use of clay cores or sand filters; using relatively non-select overburden material; proper dewatering and base preparation; changing from construction of 50 m high spoil piles to a high specification construction operation; compacting lifts with heavy haulers; constructing during the winter; and monitoring movement of the structure with satellites."

Of the gold mined in Canada over 90 percent is extracted from the ore by the process of "cyanidation". In this process crushed ore is treated with lime to provide "protective alkalinity" and cyanide, usually in the form of sodium cyanide. The gold is dissolved in the cyanide solution, which after further treatments for clarification, is precipitated by the addition of zinc dust. Wastes from the process consist of tailings which will contain cyanides. Water consumption, mill size, effluent quantity and quality are depicted in transparency (1). It should be noted that as far as the wastes are concerned it has been impossible to postulate a typical situation. Variation from the above data will occur. A summary of data from tailings pond effluents is presented in transparency (2). The figures in parentheses indicate the usual range of values for the parameter.

"This paper presents results of ongoing research being carried out at the University of New South Wales into improved methods for estimating rock mass strength. In this paper the rock mass strength of Hawkesbury Sandstone is assessed. An estimate is first made based on an extensive database of intact rock strength data being collated by the author and the assumption that the rock mass strength can be determined following the GSI approach. The resulting strength envelope is then compared with nine documented case studies where stress induced failure has occurred in tunnels excavated within Hawkesbury Sandstone. The case studies cover a range of conditions:• construction dates from 1880s to 2006• spans from 3.2 to 12.5 m• depths from 17 to 124 m• excavation methods of drill & blast, roadheader and TBM.Finite element modelling is used to assess the likely magnitudes of the stresses present at the time of failure. The finite element models are interrogated to provide the values of major and minor principal stresses in and around the mapped failure zone. Failure and stable points are then compared to the rock mass strength envelope(s) of Hawkesbury Sandstone derived using the Hoek-Brown criterion and spalling criteria. The Hoek-Brown rock mass strength envelope differentiates between the ‘failed’ and ‘stable’ zones remarkably well.INTRODUCTIONStress induced failures of rock masses are fortunately rare in civil tunnelling. However, when they occur they provide an opportunity to calibrate an assumed rock mass strength criterion. This paper compares an estimate of rock mass strength for the Hawkesbury Sandstone with the following cases where stress induced failure occurred in tunnels excavated within Hawkesbury Sandstone.• Cataract & Devines Tunnels of the Upper Canal (Upper Nepean Scheme)• Malabar Outfall Tunnel• Sydney liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) Storage Cavern• Northside Storage Tunnel• Cross City Tunnel• Lane Cove TunnelTwo-dimensional finite element modelling is used to assess the likely magnitudes of the stresses present at the time of the failures. The copper-zinc orebody at Sherritt Gordon&apos;s Ruttan Mine occurs in a structurally complex area of the Rusty Lake greenstone belt in northern Manitoba. Problems in interpreting drill results indicated a large deviation, and the structural complexity an erratic deviation, of drill holes. This was confirmed when a surface hole was intersected 420 feet to the left of line on the 800 level. This problem acted as a catalyst in promoting a search for a suitable down-hole survey method. The instruments investigated included magnetic multishot and gyroscopic units as well as the ABEM Reflex-Fotobor. Only the Fotobor came close to meeting the company&apos;s needs of simplicity, reliability, accuracy and ownership. In this paper, the methods of operating this instrument, as well as the data extraction and reduction techniques, are described. Data on the accuracy and repeatability of the instrument are presented, and a tabular presentation of the results of surveying on 86 holes totalling 64,000 feet of drilling is made. Preliminary statements of the results of ongoing research on causes of hole deviation are presented and recommendations for minimizing deviation are given. The use of the survey device is recommended in areas of structural complexity, for very steep or backsight holes and where expected ore intersections are missing.

In the present paper a new and highly economic route for Fe-separation from HCl leaching processes in hydrometallurgical applications is described. In most ore leaching processes, Fe is involved and needs to be separated; HCl has become an interesting leaching agent, because it can be recycled. Usually a mix of Fe2+ and Fe3+ is obtained which can be hydrolyzed directly (in case only Fe3+) or roasted via pyrohydrolysis (in case of Fe2+) to ferric oxide. Economic oxidation of Fe2+ to Fe3+ is described, and potential technologies for regeneration of HCl with separation of Fe are shown and compared.

During the last decade Antofagasta Minerals? Los Pelambres Mine has dramatically increased its ore throughput following the fast initial phase ramp up through a series of planned incremental expansions. The original 85,000 mtpd, two SAG line plant was commissioned in 1999 and rapidly exceeded nameplate tonnage in only a few months. Following this, the inclusion of a pebble crushing circuit resulted in throughputs in excess of 114,000 mtpd and a recent, final third line SAG and ball mill addition have taken the plant to over 175,000 mtpd even with increasing ore hardness and changing ore feed characteristics. The progressive changes are described in this paper together with how the technical challenges have been met.

Brake testing programs in general are described, and then consideration is given to different techniques of service brake testing, brake performance evaluation, braking energy and typical performance characteristics.IntroductionThe first diesel-electric truck with a capacity of about 85 tons was introduced in 1963 by Unit Rig and Equipment Company of Tulsa in cooperation with General Electric Company, who successfully developed and supplied the most important component- motorized wheels. Since then, its popularity and numbers have continued to grow, and now more than 3700 such units are in operation in mines around the world. In Canada alone, their number is more than 700, including about 150 in the Province of Newfoundland and Labrador. Similarly, their size has also grown from that initial capacity of 85 tons to 350 tons.Although the introduction of the electric trucks proved to be invariably economical, their indiscriminate use was not without severe consequences. Many runaways and even fatalities occurred when the dynamic retarder failed while the truck was travelling loaded down severe grades. The service brakes in such cases proved incapable of stopping runaway trucks, mainly due to their limited capability and the fading caused by excessive heat produced during the act of braking itself. This eventually led the various governments, the open-pit operators and the manufacturers to seriously question the braking capability as well as function of both service brakes and dynamic retarders. "Complex research of flotation concentrates of monomineral fractions of chalcopyrite, sphalerite, galena, pyrite, pyrrhotite included methods of adsorption of collectors, surface compounds by IR ATR, and surface films of flotoreagents by TEM. They revealed that the proportion of the parts of thionocarbamate (TC) and dithiophosphate had an effect on the adsorption rate of the components of minerals, on the presence of characteristic bands, and, what is an important, visualized surface film of organic flotation reagents on the particles of concentrates by TEM. The predominance of thionocarbamate in a composition selectively increases the adsorption rate constant of the components and recovery of chalcopyrite compared with sphalerite and galena. The highest flotation rate using TC is characteristic for chalcopyrite (0.62 min- 1) in case of individual use, and it's in combination with butyl xanthate (25% butyl xanthate or 3:1) 0.89 min-1 too. We studied the ternary blend - dithiophosphate: thionocarbamates: butyl xanthate. The increase of the proportion of butyl xanthate in combination reduces the contrast of the flotation rate among all sulfides.Practice flotation of refractory sulfide copper-zinc ores of the Urals (content sulfide iron - 75- 95%) confirmed that the use of a combination of selective collectors increases selective recovery of copper sulfide minerals up to 50% at the first fraction that is the conditioned copper concentrate. New selective sulfhydryl collectors resulted in high levels of recovery of copper into a concentrate - more than 90% - against 70-72% (butyl xanthate) from copper-pyrite ore. Low floatability of iron sulfides has been obtained by selective sulfhydryl collectors. Using weak selective sulfhydryl collectors can reduce pH into collective or selective flotation from pH 10-10.5 to pH = 7.2-7.5, which improves the quality of individual concentrates of nonferrous metals and their recovery. The same is true for polymetalic sulfide ore. The volume of gold recovery also increased."

Underground mines, with their relatively high ground temperature and their extensive backfilled stopes provide a great opportunity for producing geothermal heat. The novel idea of installing a network of heat exchange tubes into stopes prior to backfill placement converts each mine stope into a heat producing battery. In this system, backfill plays the role of the heat exchange medium conducting heat from the surrounding rockwalls to the heat exchange tubes. This geothermal heat can be used for heating: mine facilities and buildings, the intake air, a close-by mineral processing plant, or even nearby communities. This paper investigates the possibility of extracting renewable geothermal energy from backfilled mine stopes by means of closed-loop geothermal cycles. To simulate realistic operational conditions a heat transfer model is developed and solved numerically. To evaluate the numerical results, a small scale physical model is constructed and the experimental results are compared with the simulation results. The study estimates the sustainable rate at which heat can be extracted from a typical underground mine stope, the resulting outlet temperature and performance of the geothermal system. The results show that mine stopes are capable of sustainably producing geothermal heat not only when the mine is active, but also after the depletion of the ore body. Therefore, an underground mine will no longer be perceived as an enduring economic liability, but as a long-lasting source of clean, renewable, and inexpensive low-grade geothermal heat.

SEPARATION of the oil from the bituminons sands of the Athabaska area of Alberta has been a subject of study by the Research Council of Alberta. The results of the study have been published in the Annual Reports of the Council. However, the last Annual Report in which there is mention of bituminons sand separation is that for 1934. The attention that is being directed toward the bituminons sands at the present time calls for an up-to-date summary of the work of the Research Council of Alberta on the hot-water separation process. STATEMENT OF FUNDAMENTALS OF HOT-WATER PROCESS Studies of the hot-water separation process have been largely empirical in nature. The objective sought has been a complete recovery of oil from the sand in the form of a separated oil which, itself, is free from mineral matter. Various procedures have been tried in the hope of attaining this objective and a very considerable mass of observations and background of experience have been acquired. lt is rime that a theory for hot-water separation should commence to emerge. As a start toward the formulation of such a theory, the statements which follow regarding the constitution of bituminons sand and its reactions with water and air are presented. It is not pretended that they are entirely correct, but it is believed that they lie not far from the truth. (1) Bituminons sand is an aggregate of sand, clay, oil, and water. The sand consists mainly of quartz particles of 100 ta 200 mesh size and smaller, but also of particles of other minerais including mica, rutile, ilmenite, tour-maline, zircon, spinel, garnet, pyrite, and lignite. Clay occurs interbedded with the bituminons sand, of which, also, it is a constituent. lronstone nodules of all sizes up to eight inches in diameter are likely to be present in the bituminons sand beds. The oil is viscous, naphthenic, and of a specific gravity slightly greater than that of water. The oil content ranges up to, and sometimes even exceeds, 17 per cent by weight. Rich bituminons sand from beds not invaded by water has a water content of 3 to 5 per cent by weight. The water is probably present as a film around the sand particles. The oil surrounds the moist sand grains as an envelope. (2) Water wets quartz and other siliceous minerals more readily than does mineral oil. Consequently, water tends to displace the oil film surrounding the quartz and other siliceous particles when the bituminons sand is mixed with water. Whether the oil is completely displaced depends on the properties of the water. That is to say, the materials dissolved or suspended in the water modify its wetting properties.
