Personnel at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) are studying the technology and applications of salt-gradient solar ponds (see below) for both electrical and thermal energy generation. The brine extraction and processing site operated by the Kerr-McGee Corporation at Searles Lake, California, offers ideal conditions for economic construction of solar ponds. Furthermore, since rising conventional energy costs adversely affect the economic recovery of brine by the present process, this site was selected for a study on the feasibility of integrating the solution mining of trona (Na2CO3?NaHCO3?2H20) in the lower salt with solar ponds for heating. The major emphasis of this study was to determine whether inexpensive thermal energy available at the brine extraction site would be useful in extracting increased mineral value from the resource. The present operation, which involves the simple extraction of the complex brine and its processing at the adjacent plant, is sometimes referred to as solution mining. Since the concept discussed in this paper involves injecting a heated sodium sulfate brine to dissolve carbonate underground, the proposed scheme is referred to as "enhanced" solution mining. Economic evaluations of underground mining operations are made based on the estimated or simulated grades of the block model as the actual values are not known. Depending on how the planning decisions are made, the risk of the operation can be managed and decreased. This research introduces a mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) model for stope sequencing optimization that considers the uncertainty associated with net present value (NPV) using chance-constrained programming (CCP). The introduced method permits achieving a balance between maximizing NPV and reducing the associated operational risk through transforming the problem into a multiobjective problem, where the objectives are maximizing the NPV and minimizing the risk. This risk is expressed in terms of the standard deviation of project outcomes, taking into account multiple possible scenarios. In a case study, the efficiency of the method was demonstrated as a decision-making tool capable of translating a specified risk or reliability level into a stope sequencing plan.

Undercut-and-fill mining is a method developed by the International Nickel Company to deal with abnormal pillar mining conditions at one of its mines. Results have been such that its use has been extended to normal, pillar recovery operations in other mines of the Company as a replacement for conventional square-set pillar mining. It is anticipated that the method will also largely replace square-set stoping at INCo mines, especially for mining at deep horizons.

Borates have been mined in the desert areas of California and Nevada for more than 100 years. To about 1890, playa surface mining provided the chief sources of boron minerals. Underground mining of colemanite and later of borax and kernite was predominate until about twenty years ago. Open pit mining of the large deposits of borax and kernite near Boron, California has been most significant for the past twenty years. Mining of colemanite in the Ryan, California area, near Death Valley, began in 1907. Following the discovery of the large deposits in the Boron area (about 1957), mining in the Death Valley area became nearly nonexistent. Only small tonnages were mined for special uses. Little mining was done in the Boraxo area near Ryan. The first claim was made in about 1915 In 1960 the area became the property of the Kern County Land Company, which was acquired by Tenneco Oil Company in 1967. In 1976 the various borate properties and claims in this region were acquired by American Borate Corporation. The open pit mine is now approximately 400 feet (121.9 m) deep, 3000 feet (914.4 m) long and 1000 feet (304.8 m) wide. The borates in the Boraxo pit consist primarily of three minerals. These are about 50% coiemanite (C2B6O11' 5H2O), about 40% probertite (NaCaB5O9.5H2O), and 10% ulexite (NaCaBcO9.8H2O). The colemanite, along with boric acid and high-grade coiemanite ore from Turkey provide the only sodium-free borates for production of textile grade fiberglas. When heated to its decomposition temperature, colemanite decrepitates to a fine powder. This provides the basis for the concentration process. The gangue minerals in this deposit are primarily calcite and clays, including bentonite. The ore body has a very low arsenic content.which is a desirable feature. Test work had been done with samples prior to the results discussed herein. This paper will discuss results of test work which were the basis for erection of a plant, and the subsequent plant operations.

Recent publication of United States Bureau of Mines figures showed that the sand and gravel (3) industry is the largest single mining industry in the United States in term of yearly tonnage produced. The yearly production of over 500,000,000 tons per year now exceed bituminous coal production. This disclosure caught unawares many observers who have not been following closely the rapid-growth of this phase of mining. Along with this steady growth in production, the sand and gravel industry has gone through an accelerated and varied program of beneficiation in a period of the last ten years.

Surface tension and its control are important in the concentration of ores by froth flotation, both in terms of producing the proper bubble size distribution and to render the ore surface of interest hydrophobic such that adhesion to a bubble will take place. The influence a substance has on surface tension has traditionally been measured using static, equilibrium techniques. Yet many applications such as flotation involve rate-related effects of surface tension where equilibrium values are not reached. In the time frame of 1 - 300 seconds, aging effects have been noted for bubbles formed in dodecylamine acetate solutions; a slow decrease in surface tension occurs until an equilibrium value is reached, as studied by Finch and Smith (1972). Since stationary bubbles do not exist in flotation cells because of the turbulence generated by agitation and aeration, it is more likely that the chemical composition of the bubble is determined during its formation, under dynamic conditions. The chemical composition is extremely important because the induction time required for a particle-bubble entity to collide and adhere to each other is augmented by favorable surface tension (wetting) proper- ties between the surface of the particle and the bubble air-water interface or envelope, as considered by Mackenzie and Matheson (1963). Finch and Lyman (1976) have established that the probability of a "permanent" attachment taking place during this contact time is aided by the ability of an oil droplet (viz. bubble) to relieve non- equilibrium surface tension effects which are involved in the water-thinning process. This Maragoni effect, or surface elasticity, can be considered in the context of particle agglomeration addressed by Kao and coworkers (1975). Water drainage leads to the formation of a collector-frother meniscus appearing between the colliding entities, arising from their combined partial immiscibility in the water phase and promoted by hydrophobic bonding within the interface. Together they constitute a liquid bridge whose force of attraction drawing the particles together is proportional to the interfacial tension existing between the water phase and liquid bridge. This adhesive force shows an approximate linear decrease with separation distance until rupture occurs, that is, FX = Fmax (1 ? X/Xr) (1) for a distance of separation X and rupture distance G. The greater the surface elasticity of the bubble, the greater will be the rupture distance and the better will be the force of adhesion. Taiwan is located in the orogenic belt of island arcs on the western rim of the Pacific Ocean. The structure of the Taiwan coal fields is much complicated as a result of active Cenozoic orogenic disturbance in Plio-Pleistocene time. The abundant faults and folds have created poor structural conditions of the coal seams and some peculiar safety problems in mining however, the domestic coal still played an important role in the economic development of Taiwan for the years before 1968. Because of increasing mining depth and a decreasing number of miners, the coal production dropped from nearly 5.1 million metric tons in 1968 to 2.45 million metric tons in 1981. There were 173 small active coal mines and about 22 thousand miners in 1981. The coal mining in Taiwan has a history of more than one century. Specific efforts have been undertaken in solving major coal mine safety problems such as gas outbursts, bad roofs and weak floors, difficulty in ventilation due to deep underground mining, spontaneous combustion etc. We have thus acquired much helpful experience which, we deem, is worth reporting at this meaningful meeting.

Oxidation of coal can best be described as a process of deterioration, since most of the uses of coal, such as for fuel and by-product chemical and coke production, are adversely affected by coal oxidation, and the inclusion of oxidized coal in most coal products detracts from their value. There are probably many mechanisms of coal oxidation, and the ways oxygen molecules combine as complexes with coal macromolecules to form new substances have been dealt with and speculated upon by many workers1)* but are not dealt with in the present work. This study deals with tests and methods of detecting oxidized coal, with particular emphasis on the microscopically discernible changes that accompany the chemical and physical changes that affect the technological properties of coal during oxidation.

When Eugene Bailey asked me to contribute to this session on "Canadian exploration - 1976", it took a little coaxing before he got me to agree. My immediate reaction was, what could i say about Canadian exploration that already had not been said a hundred times in the past few years; secondly, why include a banking person in such a discussion? Everyone knows banks only come into the picture after the discovery has been made and feasibility well established and validated. Rather than wrestle with these misgivings, I decided to take the easy way out and go on blind faith in Eugene - that is, he asked me so he must think that I could come up with some useful thoughts and at least touch upon some of the pros and cons of exploration in Canada. The object of the whole exploration exercise is to Find economic deposits, once they are found, one cannot really move them elsewhere to mine them. It follows, therefore, that we should really be speaking about the pros and cons of mining In Canada and my treatise will eventually lean in this direction. In any event and before getting down to the pros and cons, let us take a quick look at the history of mineral resource development in our country since the end of world war II. At that time, we were producing well under one billion dollars worth of mineral products including hydrocarbons.

Laboratory test work, pilot plant testing and plant experience with wet, fine mesh screens is discussed. High frequency, low amplitude, fine mesh, wet screens were installed on the 6th cleaner concentrate stream. These screens produce a 60% oversize recovery split of the molybdenite concentrate that is of leached equivalent quality. The undersize stream is leached with 'hot ferric chloride to remove Pb and Cu contaminates before roasting or shipment to sulfide customers. This plant modification is a good example of using existing technology in an unconventional flow sheet to yield significant cost savings.

Hydrologic and economic criteria figure in many obvious ways in water resources development, but they are rarely linked quantitatively, and most of the applications are pertinent only to the case-in-point. In the preparation of the Regional Plan for the massive program of ground water development in the Punjab, situations have arisen where the choice among two or more alternatives was made by analyzing the economic implications of critical hydrologic parameters. Two of these situations which are of more-or-less general interest are described herein. The first involves basic development policy -- whether ground water development should be based on the demand of the economy, or the conservation concept of safe-yield. The analysis demonstrated that mining of ground water is clearly indicated for areas where alternative supplies are unavailable. The second problem involves integrating hydrologic data into an economic model to determine optimum well design, From an analysis of all pertinent factors, a simple nomograph was derived which can be used to determine well specifications on-site during construction. The nomograph can be modified for use in any alluvial terrain.

Flotation columns have been readily accepted for use in most sulfide flotation plants; however, recently columns are being used in many other areas. Recent improvements in design methodologies have overcome many operating problems and led to improvements in metallurgy. In addition, physical improvements in column design have simplified their operation while leading to better control. The Turbo-Air External Bubble Generator has provided a method for bubble size control and variation in air holdup and carrying capacity. These have enabled commercial operations to improve grades and recoveries by optimizing performance.

Several years of rock-burst research conducted by the Federal Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the mining companies of the Coeur d?Alene Mining District, Idaho, in addition to progress made by others throughout the world, have led to a good understanding of the rock-burst problem. This paper describes conditions which have caused specific bursts, present capabilities of detecting stress buildup and bursts, control methods, and a suggested approach to analyzing any individual mine-burst problem.

The nature of adsorbed calcium carboxylates (oleate and stearate) has been investigated by in-situ/ex-situ Fourier transform infrared internal reflection spectroscopy (FTIR/IRS). Previous spectroscopic studies in alkaline solution have shown that adsorbed carboxylate is characterized by a C-O stretching vibration at about 1550 em?1 for less than monolayer coverage. Similar results were found in this study. More specifically, in this study such a singlet at 1550 cm-1 was found for LB monolayers of calcium distearate transferred as a condensed layer at a high film pressure to the surfaces of fluorite and germanium. Normally the spectrum of bulk calcium distearate reveals a doublet at 1575 and 1540 cm-1, characteristic of a three dimensional 7-fold coordination for calcium carboxylate complexes. This doublet is generally found for carboxylate multilayers formed by spontaneous adsorption at the surface of calcium minerals. In this regard, the spectral evidence suggests that whenever the calcium dicarboxylate is constrained at a surface as a condensed layer, the 7-fold coordination can not be satisfied and the surface carboxylate is forced into a two dimensional symmetrical coordination with a singlet at 1550 cm-1. On the other hand, if the Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) monolayer calcium distearate film is transferred at a low film pressure the doublet is observed. This analysis is further confirmed by the spectral results for LB transferred calcium distearate monolayers at a hydrophobic silicon surface. Even though these are condensed monolayers formed at high film pressure, the carboxylate group, oriented away from the surface, is no longer constrained by the surface force field, and thus exhibits the characteristic doublet of the bulk calcium distearate salt.

Low levels of thallium were detected in the mine water drainages, and process water discharges of western mining and smelting operations. This required remediation under state regulatory standards, which allow discharges of no more than .0017 ppm thallium in mine water discharges. Influent streams containing thallium can be mitigated to state discharge standards after a single pass through the series of fluidized upflow columns. Test work to determine the optimal flow rates used pilot scale systems at two separate locations treating 5 - 25 gpm of effluent. The test system at the gold mine mimics the full-scale system, which will be based on the existing upflow carbon tanks that have been converted to zeolite columns. The system installed at ASARCO's East Helena smelter has a far more complex influent stream with a high loading of competing cations. Nevertheless the columns filled with CABSORB® are successfully mitigating the thallium contamination. CABSORB® ZS500RW is a product based on the sodium analog of the zeolite mineral chabazite named herschelite.

The Mantos Blancos copper-silver district is located in northern Chile about 45 kilometers northeast of Antofagasta, as shown in Figure 1. Disseminated and veinlet copper and copper-iron sulfides containing economically significant silver values are hosted by andesitic to rhyolitic volcanic rocks of probable Jurassic age (Chavez, 1983). Field, mineralogical, textural and lithochemical evidence show that three major alteration types may be recognized within the district: (1) district-wide sodium metasomatism, manifested as albitization of feldspars and development of albite veinlets and pore-fillings, (2) local to widespread, incipient to intense addition (chloritization) or removal (bleaching) of magnesium and iron and (3) local to widespread, moderate to intense hematitization, usually spatially associated with bornite-digenite-covellite (as specularite) or digenite-covellite-chalcocite (as red hematite staining with or without specularite) mineralization. Carbonatization, occurring as veins, veinlets, vesicle fillings and irregular patches of calcite, varies in magnitude of development but is widespread. Sericitization of feldspars and groundmass is only locally intense yet is generally present as incipient alteration throughout the district. The district-wide albitization of the Mantos Blancos volcanic sequence has altered what were originally more potassic and calcic, less sodic, rocks to what are now more properly referred to as keratophyres (Battey, 1955; Gilluly, 1935, Hughes, 1975). The petrographic and lithochemical characteristics of the three major alteration types noted above are summarized below.

Technological advances in mine equipment and milling processes have enabled mining companies to exploit ever lower grades of ore. The result has been larger disturbances, greater volumes of waste, a complex web of infrastructure, and an overall trend towards mega-projects that can extend over several square kilometers. This explosive growth in a mining operation’s disturbance footprint provokes an obvious question: What’s it going to cost to reclaim all of this? At face value, this can be an enormous financial liability for a company, but since the timing of reclamation may be years in the future for many operations, these costs can be heavily discounted thereby limiting the burden on the corporate balance sheet. Nonetheless, mining companies are eager to remove these liabilities as quickly as possible, conversely, regulators want assurance reclamation will, in fact, occur. How might one bridge these competing interests? Navigating the practical and financial requirements of a post-closure landscape requires foresight, judgement and assumptions, however, companies who do not adequately plan for these future expenditures when there is no off-setting income stream will likely face some difficult decisions. Simple risk analysis tools and utilizing the time value of money can help bring some clarity to this end-of-mine life phase.

Launching a full-size pressurized-face Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) in difficult ground conditions is always challenging. Recently, few projects have innovated the process by scaling the trenchless method of pipe jacking, and modified steel bell approach, to facilitate the launching of a full-size TBM without the need for large and deep trenches, starter/tail tunnels, or for incrementally installing supporting gear as the machine advances. This paper presents three such projects; evaluates the post-bid contractor proposed modifications; details the innovative use of pre-cast pipe segments to facilitate machine launch; and, provides an overall assessment of the benefits, challenges and lessons learned related to the modified approach.

Mr. Chairman, Officers, Members and Guests of the AIME, I want to express my appreciation for the privilege of being on your program at this meeting. Coal mining, in recent years, has become much more competitive than it formerly was. To stay in business, it has been necessary for coal mines to mechanize. This, in itself, has not been enough for after one has mechanized his mine, he must keep replacing the equipment with the latest type and model machines. We, at Olga, have been doing this very thing for the past several years. Olga No. 2 Mine is located at Caretta, West Virginia, in McDovell County, about twelve miles south of Welch, It is a shaft mine, operating in the No. 4 Pocahontas seam. The thickness in the area, we are presently mining, varies from five to six feet. In some areas the immediate roof is slate, ranging in thickness from a few inches to four and five feet; in other places, the sandstone lies on top of the coal, This sandstone is about twenty-five feet thick.

During 1980-2000, the Florida Phosphate industry will deplete its Central Florida Polk County reserves. As a result, new mines will be built in the ?so-called? Southern Florida Reserve areas. These new mines will require new mining, beneficiation and tailings disposal technologies in that the southern reserves have different characteristics than have been encountered in the Central Florida deposits furthermore, government regulations will necessitate the development of new tailings and clay disposal methods. This paper reviews these challenges for the phosphate industry and how these opportunities can be expected to effect plant design and plant operating practices.
