In response to the Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969, mandatory noise standards have been developed that specify time-noise limits of mine personnel exposure. Most affected by elevated noise levels is the pneumatic roof bolter operator, both in terms of levels near or in excess of 115 dbA and in terms of length of exposure. Therefore, the principal emphasis of this Bureau of Mines report is on pneumatic drill noise control. It is not the intent of this report to suggest any drill redesign; instead, methods are suggested to reduce the noise level by complementing existing machines. An integral muffler system and a separate muffler system were tested in an attempt to lower pneurnaric drill noise levels. Pneumatic drills, when new, operate at about 115 dbA when drilling in sandstone. Using the drill muffler systems, it was possible to decrease the noise level of a 115 -dbA s rope drill to approximately 100 dbA.

This study was conducted by the Bureau of Mines to determine the effect of steel reheating practices in burning natural gas on the amount of silicon required to prevent the formation of copper on steels containing up to 1 wt-pct Cu. Formation of copper, which causes surface hot shortness, was readily prevented by as little as 0.3 wt-pct Si and by 2 vol-pct excess oxygen in the furnace atmosphere when reheating steels containing up to 0.8 wt-pct Cu. Up to 0.8 wt-pct Si content and careful control of reheating conditions were necessary for steels containing 1 wt-pct Cu. Best conditions for these steels were reheating to 2,200° F (1,205° C) in burning gases containing 2 vol-pct excess oxygen, and then to higher temperatures in gases of 6 vol-pct excess oxygen. Slag and mold wash were not detrimental on steels reheated for 8 hr by a soaking-pit-type furnace schedule, but they were problematical on steels heated for 2 hr by a pusher-type furnace schedule. The effect of silicon contents on scaling rates also was determined.

High methane emissions originating from the active face areas and from the fractured formations overlying and underlying the mined coalbed can adversely affect both safety and productivity in underground coal mines. Since ventilation alone may not be sufficient to control the methane levels in the longwall mining environment, gob gas ventholes have become a standard supplementary methane control option in many mines. As mines progress into deeper and gassier coalbeds, or as longwall panel size increases, ventilation and gob gas ventholes together may not be sufficient to maintain methane levels within statutory limits. To decrease the risk associated with methane emissions under these circumstances, in-seam horizontal methane drainage is often used to reduce the gas content of the coalbed prior to mining. Horizontal methane drainage borehole completion designs, drilling strategies, and degasification lead times may need to be adjusted for site-specific conditions due to mine design, geology, and the gas content of the coalbed. This study investigates different horizontal methane drainage borehole patterns, borehole lengths, and degasification times prior to and during panel extraction to evaluate their effectiveness in reducing methane emissions using a "dynamic" 3D reservoir modeling of a 38 1-m wide longwall panel operating in the Pittsburgh coalbed. Results of this study showed that dual and tri-lateral boreholes are more effective in decreasing emissions and in shielding the entries compared to fewer shorter, cross-panel, horizontal boreholes parallel to the longwall face. Modeling results showed that after 12 months of pre-mining methane drainage, the average longwall face emission rates can be reduced by as much as 10.3 m3/min and 6.8 m3/min using tri- and dual-lateral boreholes, respectively. It was also shown that if pre-mining methane drainage time is short, it is important to continue methane drainage during the panel extraction to maximize reductions in longwall face emissions since additional face emission reductions achieved during this period can be comparable to pre-mining degasification.

The Bureau of Mines studied the costs of transporting fossil fuels, coal, and residual fuel oil from areas of production to consumer regions. Transportation data were stratified by type of carrier, size of shipment, and distance to determine what general effects these variables have upon transportation costs. Economics of haul for coal exist for longer versus shorter distances, and for larger versus smaller trainload sizes. Tanker and barge transportation of residual fuel oil does not show economies of haul for longer distances. It is shown that tanker size and seasonal variation are primary factors influencing the cost of shipping. Railroad transportation data show that coal from western coalfields could be competitive with foreign residual fuel oil in selected midwestern fossil fuel markets. However, the western coal would not be competitive in the New England and the eastern seaboard energy markets.

This report describes the loading and transportation practices employed at the zinc-lead mines of The Eagle-Picher Co., Jo Daviess County, Ill., and Lafayette County, Wis. The report also gives a brief history of the Illinois-Wisconsin zinc-lead district and the operations of the company in the area. The diesel-powered, rubber-tired loading and haulage equipment is described and illustrated from the operational point of view only, and an analysis is made of the materials-handling system without going into health and safety Factors. The costs per ton of the various components of mechanical loading, underground haulage, underground crushing, and hoisting for fiscal year 1960 are tabulated.

Volume II The purpose of this study is to explain reasons for the productivity differences in mining crews. The literature on group productivity is examined. Then a new approach to estimating productivity differences is proposed and estimated across seven different mines. The results indicate a fairly robust model in terms of explanatory power. Recommendations on how the model can be used as a managerial tool are presented.

This study was done to evaluate the costs of various dumping operations at waste and spoil piles. It has been theorized that accidents associated with dumping operations might be reduced by short-dumping rather than edge-dumping, but many operators have been reluctant to use short-dumping because they believe it is not as cost effective as edge-dumping. To evaluate this perception, researchers at the Spokane Research Laboratory of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health reviewed the costs of various dumping methods at waste and spoil piles. The study found that overall cost differences between the two methods were not significant in most cases. However, while overall cost differences between the two methods appear small, capital costs could be more significant when short-dumping if numerous dump sites are used concurrently. The choice of which method to use should be based on considerations of the safety of dozer and truck operators.

Toxic gases produced by the detonation of six explosives were measured in an underground hardrock metal mine during actual mining operations. The six explosives included two semi-gelatin dynamites, three slurry explosives and an ammonium-nitrate, fuel-oil/ammonia dynamite combination. Explosives were detonated at the face of a drift and the toxic gases produced by the detonation were trapped to the end of the drift by a bulkhead located a short distance away from the face. Toxic gas concentrations were then measured with direct readout instruments and together with the containment volume, the toxic gas volumes per mass of explosive were calculated. Toxic gas measurements were found in the following ranges (ft3/lbm): N02 0.010-0.035; N02, 0.003-0.019; CO, 0.08-0.30; S02, 0.00-0.05; and C02, 0.7-1.8. Results showed that toxic gas production (ft3/lbm) correlated with the densities (kg/m3) and energy densities (kJ/kg) of the explosives tested.

This report describes exploration, development, and exploitation methods, and summarizes costs at the Stormy Day mine, which was discovered in 1941. Several shipments of tungsten ore were made in 1944 to the Metals Reserve Company, Salt Lake City, Utah. The purchase of tungsten by the Federal Government, which began in 1951, stimulated interest in tungsten, and a successful program of exploration with participation of the Defense Minerals Exploration Administration (DMEA) indicated enough ore to warrant development of the property. Development work comprised drifting, crosscutting, and raising. Shrinkage stoping was used for mining the ore. Operations were suspended in October 1956, when the Federal Government terminated its purchase program. Total production of the mine was approximately 20,000 tons of tungsten ore. INTRODUCTION This information circular is one of a series, prepared in cooperation with various mining companies and published by the Bureau of Mines, relating to methods and costs of equipping and developing mining properties in the United States.

As part of its research on advanced mining technology, the U.S. Bureau of Mines emphasizes studies on in situ leach mining. This research enables the Bureau to develop technical information that can allow mining companies to adopt in situ leach mining methods. Research results should help to remove the technical and economic barriers currently hindering the development of commercial in situ leach mining operations. This report contains papers summarizing results of Bureau research on various aspects of in situ leach mining. A featured topic is the cooperative field experiment of the Bureau and Santa Cruz Joint Venture in a copper deposit near Casa Grande, AZ. Discussions in-clude an overview of the entire project, cost modeling, environmental permitting, laboratory core-leaching experiments, petrographic studies, and an evaluation of the geologic structure in the region. In addition, papers describe hydrologic modeling and geophysical studies of solution flow during leaching. Preliminary geochemical modeling studies are also summarized. A final paper describes a nonionic chemical additive with potential for significantly reducing the high costs of drilling in in situ leach mining.

Dusts can be filtered out of air streams onto polymer surfaces by electrostatic trapping resulting from the spontaneous transfer of electrons upon contact between dust particles and the polymer surfaces. Such spontaneous contact electrification has been studied quantitatively in this contract with the aid of modern semiconductor charge-sensors with the aim of determining what basic principles govern the sign and magnitude of contact electrification. Information obtained by capacitance-voltage measurements of thin polymer films on silicon showed that charges as large as 4 x 1012 electrons per cm2 develop spontaneously, and that such a charge gives adhesional forces of 165 pounds per square inch (11 atmospheres). Direct measurement of dust polymer contact electrification, using silicon surface channel conductance sensors, also showed spontaneous charges of more than 1012 electrons per cm2. Some polymers can either donate or accept electrons. These included chlorinated polyethylene, chlorinated polypropylene, polyethylmethacrylate, and a copolymer of maleic anhydride with n-octadecylvinylether. Other polymers never accepted electrons but could donate electrons; these included polystyrene, pulychlorostyrune, polyvinylchloride, polyvinylacetate, a polycarbonate (Lexan), and cellulose tributyrate. Contact electrification studies were made with dusts (coal dust, a channel black, or a silica powder) contacting thin films of various polymers solvent-cast onto the semiconductor charge-sensor. Sometimes charging was instantaneous and sometimes slower, but in all but one case (coal dust on a copolymer of maleic anhydride with n-octadecylvinyl ether) the charge trunsfer was a donation of electrons by the polymer to the dust. "Ventilation is one of the meet important factors in mining, although until recent years less thought has probably been given to effective ventilation than to any other one phase of mining. In the past, very little, if any, attention was given air courses until they became so constricted by falls that the volume of air was greatly reduced; and, in addition, the stoppings and doors were so poorly constructed that only a very small percentage of air reached the face workings.As a matter of fact, mines have been visited where the volume of air being circulated in certain sections was much larger than in others, and where the management was striving to increase the flow of air in those sections with the least air current, believing the ventilation to be deficient. After sampling and analyzing the return air from the various sections in such mines it has been found that the quality of the air in certain places with the largest flow was more impure than in some of those with the least flow.In past years, practically all mine fans were operated by steam-driven engines supplied with steam from the mire boiler plant. No check was made on the steam consumption or the power cost of operating the fan, therefore the management had very little if any definite information as to cost of ventilating the mine.With the increased use of electrically-driven equipment in mines electricity is being used more and more to drive mine ventilating fans, and since in many instances the current is purchased from central power plants operators have come to realize that in many cases the cost of operating the fans is very high. Some engineers estimate that it ranges from 20 to 50 per cent of the total power cost of the mine. This information, together with the fact that mines are now being developed on a larger scale, requiring larger quantities of air for the men to dilute the gases liberated, has caused the large progressive companies to make, a more comprehensive study of mine ventilation, resulting in a decided improvement in the quality and quantity of air at the face workings, as well as reducing materially the ventilating costs."

Bituminous coals having maximum fluidity values in the 40- to 25,400-dial-divisions-per-minute (ddpm) range were carbonized in a continuous, entrained-bed reactor. Carbonization was conducted in an 8-inch diameter, vertical reactor at temperatures from 955° to 1,345° F and at air-to-coal ratios ranging from 4.63 to 16.12 scf/lb of moisture-and ash-free coal charged. Carbonization rates from about 118 to 360 lb/hr, as-carbonized basis, were examined. It was demonstrated that carbonization temperature and air-to-coal ratio must exceed minimum values for continuous operation. Within the operating conditions discussed, highly fluid bituminous coal was carbonized to produce tar and nonagglomerated char. The yield of tar ranged from 21.3 to 38.9 gallons per ton and the char yield ranged from 1,109 to 1,563 pounds per ton, all units expressed on a moisture-and ash-free basis. It was demonstrated that the maximum fluidity and the average size of the coal along with the air-to-coal ratio and the carbonization temperature act together to influence the carbonization product yields and certain properties of the products. Prediction equations were developed from the data for product yields and selected properties of the char, tar, and gas.

As part of its mission to maintain an adequate supply of minerals to meet national needs and maximize mineral production from domestic sources, the Bureau of Mines is investigating the recovery of alumina by hydrochloric acid leaching of kaolinitic clay. Most iron impurities are leached from the clay along with the alumina and must be removed before or during crystallization to aluminum chloride hexahydrate. The thermal decomposition step then provides an alumina product of acceptable iron analysis. Miniplant studies of a Bureau-developed solvent extraction technique, using a tertiary amine in kerosene diluent, have demonstrated that the iron content in aluminum chloride leach liquors can be reduced to levels of less than 0.007 wt-pct (7 ppm), expressed as Fe203. Entrained and dissolved organic matter in the purified pregnant leach liquor from the solvent extraction circuit can be reduced to less than 2 ppm by using a fabric-packed coalescer and subsequent activated carbon treatment. Investigators discovered that a steady buildup of zinc accumulated in the solvent phase within the extraction circuit, proportional to the amount of leach liquor treated. The solvent phase zinc analysis increased by 0.01 wt-pct ZnO for each 1,000 gal of pregnant leach liquor purified.

Historically, coal miners have known that roof shales can deteriorate in contact with humid mine air, causing massive roof falls and injuries from falling rock. It is critical to recognize rocks prone to weathering and to adequately support these rocks in order to ensure the long-term stability of the openings. In a recent study, NIOSH has used a wet/dry cycling test to determine the moisture sensitivity of over 800 specimens of roof rock from 25 U.S. coal mines. Fireclays and some gray shales are the most moisture-sensitive. Rocks with disturbed bedding, in contrast to flat-bedded rocks, are also more sensitive to water. Black shales are relatively un-reactive to moisture and serve to protect more reactive gray shales above. Mines that have roof rocks with moisture-sensitivity indexes above 40% can experience slaking roof conditions, and many require high coverage surface controls. Three case studies are presented in which the moisture-sensitivity index is correlated to roof conditions underground, and can be used to indicate long term deterioration. Engineering measures are described to control moisture-sensitive roof. In one case, roof screen not only reduces injuries from rock fall but also is shown to reduce roof falls. Burnout Control is a process developed by the U.S. Bureau of Mines for accelerating the burning of wasted coal fires in situ, while at the same time controlling the heat and fumes produced. The Albright fIre project is a fIrst fIeld trial of Burnout Control as applied to a coal waste bank. An exhaust ventilation system was designed and constructed and then operated over a 1-year period at the site of an existing abandoned mine land fire near the town of Albright, WV. While predicted exhaust gas temperatures of 900° C and thermal power levels of 5 MW were achieved at 20-to 3O-in H20 vacuum levels, problems were encountered with engineering designs, equipment breakdown, and fuel-rich combustion that curtailed the time period of satisfactory operation. Effective afterburning of the exhaust gases (as they were drawn from the bank) corrected the problems associated with combustion stoichiometry and led to high thermal outputs. It is believed that with (1) improvements in engineering design and construction, (2) better control of the afterburning process, and (3) the use of conventional stack gas air-pollution controls, Burnout Control can be applied successfully to a coal waste bank fire.

An inert-gas fusion technique was applied by the Bureau of Mines to the oxygen analysis of mixed-fluoride electrolytes used in electrowinning uranium and the rare-earth metals. Method development included: (1) Thermodynamic and experimental evaluation of the temperature required to quantitatively remove oxygen from a fluoride melt; (2) installation of a water and an acid trap to entrain the volatilized fluorides; (3) development of a suitable sample-preparation technique for the heterogeneous fluoride baths in which both pulverizing and pelletizing were necessary to achieve reproducible results; (4) comparison of platinum flux and dry crucible techniques, which showed that the use of platinum was not necessary. The accuracy of the method was evaluated by analyzing fluoride baths containing known amounts of oxygen added as the metal oxide. In the 0.05-to 0.5-percent range, the relative error was about ±5 percent.

This Final Report covers the work performed for Contract No. H0377043, "Cables for Face Equipment" from August 1, 1977 to April 1, 1981. It reports the findings in three areas of research: cable protection, circuit-breakers, and high-voltage cable couplers. Laboratory and analytical studies have been conducted in the three areas to determine proper circuit-breaker settings, cable sizes, and coupler performance. Also, an extensive field-monitoring program was established to relate in-mine epxerience to laboratory findings. Further, various pieces of equipment was designed for laboratory testing, particularly in the area of cable reeling and unreeling.

The twenty-fourth of a series of semiannual surveys pertaining to motor gasoline marketed in the United States was made by the Bureau of Mines in August, 1931, The first part of a report giving the results of that survey as they pertain to specification data is given in this paper. A companion report, Part II, is in preparation and will discuss the results off other determinations made on the samples, including octane number ratings on the individual samples (to be made by the Bureau of Standards) and results of the determination of gravity, color, doctor test, and "gum" content by the copper dish method and the Bureau of Mines steam-oven method.
