Drilled pier foundations have long been a favored foundation type for heavily loaded structures. Drilled piers derive their load-bearing capacity from end-bearing, and/or sidewall friction. This type of foundation is used in many geologic settings, including those areas underlain by hard carbonate rock, such as limestones and dolomites. When properly designed and constructed, drilled piers provide high load-carrying capacity in both compression and uplift. However, carbonate rock is often subject to intense differential weathering resulting in the formation of an irregular bedrock surface, sinkholes and caves; consequently, the investigation for, and the design of, drilled pier foundations is often complex. Further, the construction may be difficult and costly. This paper discusses geotechnical investigative procedures which can be employed to develop foundation design criteria and reduce the frequency of changed conditions. Finally, state-of-the-art construction practices and quality control techniques are discussed.

"The Brickworks Marketplace Project is a significant shopping centre development in inner north west Adelaide constructed by Badge Constructions in 2014 and 2015. The site was a former brickworks with a deep pit containing various extents of uncontrolled fill which was to remain on site, and with a remaining void up to 6 m in depth. The existing uncontrolled fill was improved using the High Energy Impact Compaction system, and the pit backfilled using a quarry crusher byproduct selected by trial and a recycled crushed concrete and bricks and compacted in deep lifts. This approach resulted in significant savings in compaction time, cost and building foundations. The settlements of various parts of the completed works have been monitored since February 2015 and this monitoring has demonstrated small settlements which meet the user’s constraints.INTRODUCTIONThe Torrensville Brickwork Markets project involved the transformation of a former brickworks and clay pit site into a regional 17,000m2 shopping centre, opening in June 2015.The site was a former brickworks with adjoining clay borrow pit. The clay pit had been partially backfilled over many years with ‘uncontrolled’ fill comprising ‘clean’ soil, bricks and kiln dust typically of the following thicknesses:??of the order of up to 7 m to 10 m but locally up to 15 m in the western part of the site??2 m to 5 m in the south-eastern part of the site; and??less than 0.5 m in the north-eastern part of the siteAnecdotal reports suggested compaction of some of the fill may have been undertaken, although this not able to be confirmed nor records obtained.Initially it was proposed to take up the existing uncontrolled fill, sort and recompact or remove to landfill, followed by backfilling in conventional means over 500,000 cubic metres of imported filling to a thickness of up to approximately 6m to backfill the former pit. This work represented a significant cost and was not economically viable.During early negotiations, the contractor proposed an alternative to retain and ground improve the existing filling on site, and to backfill the pit with fill placed and compacted in deep lifts, thereby significantly improving the economics, environmental and community impacts of the proposed works.The developer agreed to the proposal with the following performance criteria:??a settlement of =10 mm after 10 passes by the Impact Compactor (on existing subgrade areas);??a bearing capacity of 250 kPa for high level footings;??a maximum long term differential settlement of 40 mm (measured over 16 m), ie. 1 in 400; and??a minimum modulus of 40MPa."

At a Fertilizer plant located in the southern part of India, 74 numbers of pump foundations have shown non-uniform settlements causing the tilting of pump foundations under self-weight primarily due to the presence of varying thickness of the heterogeneous subsoil beneath the pump foundations and soil erosion because of water seepage through deeper excavations in the close vicinity. Various corrective measures have been explored and taking due cognizance of the prevailing subsoil conditions, site constraints, and constructability aspects, micropiling has been adopted. This paper presents the site problem and details of remedial measures adopted for rehabilitation of the distressed pump foundations. The main objective of this paper is to provide guidelines for designer during design and detail engineering stage to avoid similar nature of problems and also to provide a solution concept to tackle similar nature of problem(s) if encountered at site.

"BACKGROUNDLake Hamilton in Hot Springs, AR was created in 1932 when the Arkansas Power and Light Co. completed Carpenter Dam on the Ouachita River to generate electricity. Today, the 7,200-acre (2,914 hectares) impoundment is one of Arkansas’s most popular recreational and residential lakes.U.S. 70 crosses Lake Hamilton by means of a seven-span bridge featuring nine steel girders per span. Constructed between 1982 and 1984, the 1,410-foot long (430m) bridge carries four lanes of traffi c across the lake. The bridge is supported by six intermediate reinforced concrete piers composed of hammer heads, stems, footings and seals, which sit on the underlying rock. (See Figure 1). The bridge rises to a maximum of 33 feet (10m) above the surface of the lake and the footings and seals extend a maximum of 29.5 feet (9m) below the surface of the lake. The seals are situated on hard, fractured sandstone and shale.Routine underwater inspections in 1993 revealed large cracks in the lean seal concrete and refl ective cracks in the reinforced concrete footings. Infrastructure Engineers, Inc., The Arkansas State Highway and Transportation Department’s (AHTD) design consultant, then conducted an in-depth underwater inspection of the pier foundations. The investigation included cross-hole sonic logging, singlehole sonic logging, visual examination and strength testing of core samples, and petrographic analysis.The investigation revealed extensive cracking and low-strength concrete within the seals of all intermediate pier foundations. Many voids within the seal concrete had become fi lled with silt. There was evidence of continued seal deterioration between underwater inspections.AHTD and its engineers considered three rehabilitation solutions in the preliminary engineering stage: micropiles, a cofferdam supported concrete jacket, or a pile supported concrete jacket. The three alternatives were estimated to cost $1,250,000; $4,320,000; and $3,030,000 respectively. All three options would transfer the loads from the pier footing directly to the rock below, bypassing the seal concrete."

In construction of drilled shafts under water, placing concrete in the shafts is technically demanding and involves complex construction logistics. Past construction experience has demonstrated that high quality concrete can be placed in drilled shafts under water with a proper concrete mix and proper placement techniques. However, a significant number of failures have occurred which have resulted in excessive cost overruns and delays. These problems may have occurred because proper underwater concrete construction techniques have not been widely disseminated within the industry. This is a technical area where competent design and sound construction planning can achieve a significant reduction in both risk and cost. This paper will discuss some key technical issues in the concrete mix design, concrete production and placement for the drilled shaft construction. The paper also describes two lesson-learned case histories from drilled shaft construction projects.

Cross-hole sonic logging (CSL) has become the universal standard, nondestructive testing (NDT) method used in evaluating the integrity of foundation structures to maintain quality assurance and quality control (QA/QC) of transportation facilities and infrastructures. Tomography, based on three-dimensional cross-hole sonic logging data processing technology, offers an improvement over the techniques currently used to characterize the interior structure of drilled shafts. The underlying concept for seismic tomography is based on the principle that acoustic waves propagate at different velocities through different types of material or the same material with different physical properties. Three-dimensional velocity tomographic images provide greater detail of the interior structure, making defects easier to classify with respect to size and location within the foundation structure. By accurately classifying these defects, an engineer has the information necessary to accurately assess whether these structures meet the applicable design requirements, allowing them to repair or replace inadequate foundation structures. The end result is that the foundation structures will meet the safety and service life requirements for their project. This paper will present applications of seismic tomography, illustrating how seismic imaging can provide accurate information regarding the integrity of foundation structures.

Ground freezing is a technique which is used more and more in tunnelling under complex ground conditions. This paper will present three case studies which highlight different aspects of the ground freezing technique when applied in urban environment. The first project is the City-Tunnel in Leipzig, Germany, which is being built beneath the central station and which is the largest ground freezing project currently under construction in Germany. The second case study is part of the North-South-Line project in Amsterdam, Netherlands where ground freezing will be carried out to al-low the TBM drive through old wooden foundation piles. The freeze tubes for this project will be driven using Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD). The last project is the Hallandsas Tunnel Sweden where the ground freezing equipment has to be installed against high water pressure. The paper illustrates that ground freezing can be implemented in difficult ground conditions such as soft ground, highly fractured rock and high water pressure. The case studies highlight the importance of good workmanship. With the increasing numbers of large tunnels being constructed in difficult ground conditions the paper concludes that the complex case studies presented will be-come more representative for future tunnel projects in urban environments.

A new technique to drive tubular piles by impact hammer inside the pile has confirmed a dramatic reduction of noise and the opportunity to save steel. Also a reduction in driving time and a higher bearing capacity has been observed during a test program of this technique. As part of the so-called "Down-the-hole" driving technique, a wave equation analysis has been developed to calculate driveability and pile stress. The main feature of the new "Down-the-hole" technique is the development of a patented device allowing uncoupled penetration of pile tip and pile shaft, which makes it possible to drive both closed or open end piles and reduce the stress level induced in the pile wall. During a test program, a number of instrumented piles were driven and compared with traditional driving of the same pile with the same hammer on top (also instrumented). Also the stresses and performances were compared with precalculations. This paper, explains the technique and presents the test and noise results, in comparison with traditional top-pile-driving. The "Down-the-hole" driving technique is an interesting alternative for special applications where traditional pile driving requires a large wall thickness or in areas where noise is a hot item.

"It has been 30 years since the cement deep mixing (CDM) method developed in Japan. CDM method has been applied to many structures. While various technical improvements have been implemented in the meantime, the single-axial and double-axial technologies used at the time of its initial development are still prevalent.In response to the recent trend of reducing construction costs, we developed a triple-axial CDM method called the “Lemni 2/3 Method.” This method uses two lemniscate motions caused by newly developed auxiliary stirring devices and employs a double-axial injection method in which the cement slurry injection takes place only from the outer two axes. In this way, it is possible to create a stabilized body around the three axes. Moreover, this method does not require substantial equipment investment as conventional construction machine and facilities can be used without modification and large volume work is possible.With these technologies, this method can achieve a substantial reduction in the construction period and cost, while ensuring the same level of improvement quality as conventional methods. As a result, this method is being applied to ground improvement work in a variety of places.Lemni 2/3 Method was first put to practical use in 2004. Since then, the method has been used for ten projects. In this paper, we show some application examples of this method.OUTLINE OF TRIPLE-AXIAL CDM METHOD (LEMNI 2/3 METHOD)In the newly developed CDM method (Lemni 2/3 Method), work efficiency is improved by employing triple-axial stirring blades instead of the conventional single- or double-axial type. Existing conventional construction facilities for double-axial type can be used with only minor equipment additions, because the cement slurry injection takes place only from the outer two axes.Construction Machine and Construction MethodThe combination of major construction machines of the Lemni 2/3 Method differs little from the standard specifications of the double-axial type as shown in Fig. 1. Existing work control equipment can be used without modification, which is further evidence of the simplicity, convenience, and economy of the new method. The Fig. 2 photo shows a full view of the construction machine, and the Fig. 3 photo shows the stirring blades and the auxiliary stirring devices. The work procedure for the Lemni 2/3 Method is shown in Fig. 4."

"The recently opened Mansueto Library at the University of Chicago campus was a 2012 OPA runner-up. The dramatic elliptical shaped dome of this structure tells only part of this structure’s story. The underground automated storage and book retrieval system below ground required excavations as deep as 55 ft (17 m). The system that allows the University to store many of its publications well below grade also required an approximately 50 ft (15 m) clear span for the perimeter walls between the lower level and street level slabs. The latter requirement allows the conveyors to operate freely to retrieve and transport publications up to the lobby level. The design-assist-build team worked together to develop the most cost-effective solution for below-grade work in this challenging urban and geologic environment.The perimeter of the new oval-shaped library is over 620 ft (189 m) long and sits in a central location on campus—adjacent to the Regenstein Library and two city streets and the Henry Moore sculpture, which commemorates the location of the first self-sustaining controlled nuclear reaction. The new library construction not only had to meet challenging structural and geotechnical requirements, but also had to be sensitive to its active and historic surroundings. The soils at the site consist of about 25 ft (7.6 m) of sand, followed by lean clay, generally increasing in stiffness to the top of the dolomitic limestone. Five to 10 ft (1.5 to 3 m) pockets of saturated sand also lie on the north side of the site at about 45 ft (13.7 m) below grade. The top of weathered rock varies in elevation from 59 ft (18 m) below grade in the south to 69 ft (21 m) in the north. There is 1 to 2 ft (30 to 60 cm) of weathered rock. Groundwater at the site is about 7 ft (2 m) below grade.The new structure would extend 55 ft (17 m) below grade through saturated sand strata and into weathered rock for part of the structure’s footprint, so it was critical that the new permanent retention system minimize groundwater seepage laterally through the structure’s wall as well as piping through the weathered rock below the structure. The perimeter walls had to be very stiff to minimize ground movement around the structure’s perimeter due to the significant clear span between slabs."

"Over the past decades, there has been an increasing recognition of the strategic use of pile-supported rafts in design of heavily-loaded structures to reduce total and differential settlements. However, such a hybrid foundation construction method has not been widely utilized in many countries, including the U.S., due to code limitations. In current practice, the foundation design is based on either (i) the bearing capacity of the raft supported by the subgrade soils, or (ii) solely the pile capacity. This paper addresses the potential use of such hybrid piled-raft systems, where the structural load is shared by both by the piles and the subgrade soils directly beneath the raft, in foundation design of power plant structures. The study assessed some of the characteristics of piled-raft behavior by undertaking three-dimensional finite element analyses of two raft sizes, and various pile layout patterns, including the rafts with piles distributed evenly and only in the central area of the raft. The computer software PLAXIS 3D with the Mohr-Coulomb constitutive soil model was used to facilitate the modeling of such cases. The results presented in this paper indicate how strategically locating the piles could reduce the differential and total settlements.INTRODUCTIONUnder the high applied loads coming from the superstructure, the addition of piles is primarily required to improve the factor of safety against failure when a raft does not provide adequate bearing capacity. If the bearing capacity of the raft is sufficient to carry the total load with a reasonable safety margin, then the addition of piles is usually intended to reduce the settlements to an acceptable amount. In current practice, the design process for pile-supported raft foundations conservatively concentrates on providing solely the pile capacity to carry the total structural load without taking the contribution of the raft into account. This paper addresses the potential use of hybrid piled-rafts in controlling foundation settlement of power plant structures by considering the support of both the piles and the subgrade soils beneath the raft to carry the load."

HP-Pile foundations are the most favorable type of foundations for bridges because of their constructability, versatility with regard to subsoil conditions, and settlement controllability. For many years, bridge engineers have puzzled over the most economical way to orient HP-Piles: Should the strong axis be oriented in the longitudinal direction or in the transverse direction? The accurate design of foundations may considerably reduce construction costs. In order to answer this question, 3-D finite element models will be set up to analyze the effects of pile orientation on bridge behavior. Because seismic loading usually controls the structural design in seismic zones, it is important to investigate the effects of pile orientation under such loading. HP-Piles are designed conservatively due to the uncertainty of the dynamic soil-structure interaction during earthquakes. For the bridge substructure, the soil?s stiffness plays an important role in load distribution as the soil and piles act as a combined system to resist the seismic loading. The dynamic soil-structure interaction mechanisms of bridges in both the longitudinal and the transverse directions will be investigated through the use of 3-D finite element models. The numerical models will realistically simulate the soil-pile-abutment-wingwall-superstructure system subjected to seismic loads. Nonlinear soil springs will be employed to model the non-elastic soil behavior. The analysis will provide theoretical support to the design practice. "Case 2. 100th Street Bus Depot: Elimination of Deep Caissons in Favor of Spread FootingsThe PROJECTThe 100th Street Bus Depot is a new five-story bus terminal for the New York City Metropolitan Transit Authority occupying one city block in Manhattan between 99th and 100th Streets, and between Lexington and Park Avenues. It replaces a former two-story garage, built in the 1890’s and initially used as a trolley-car barn. The new structure is a steelframed building with concrete floors and includes a partial basement near its middle. The easternmost column line with design loads of 10 MN (1,125 tons) is within 1.5 m of the underlying multi-tube Lexington Avenue subway system. To support the new columns along the subway line, the project bid plans had called for 1 m diameter and 17 m deep drilled shafts. The upper 14 m of each unit would have required 50 mm separation from the surrounding rock to prevent stress from being imposed on the roof and walls of the adjacent tunnel. The column loads were thus transferred to below the base of the tunnel and supported by 3 m long sockets in bedrock. The bid documents contained extensive test boring information, which revealed that the project site was underlain by massive Manhattan Mica Schist bedrock within just 3 m below street level. In fact, the Lexington Avenue two-level and multi-tube subway had been tunneled through this rock circa 1910, leaving an about 6 m thick solid roof over the upper-level subway. The NX rock core recovery values were near 100 %, with average RQD of 75 %.The CHANGEThe Bus Depot project was let as a design/build contract with a very aggressive fast-track schedule. Both the pre-bid preliminary design and the subsequent final design by the Contractor’s own hired design engineers relied heavily on very restrictive codes, including unnecessarily conservative approaches to seismic design. Any suggestion for value engineering change was undesirable and was strongly resisted. Yet, objecting against the blind reliance on codes in foundation design, the author questioned the real need for the deep drilled shafts to support the columns along the subway. The unsupported statement that no stresses from the new structure can be imposed on the roof and walls of the adjacent tunnel was not sufficient reason for the drilled-shaft design. Unconvinced that deep shafts were necessary, the author rushed to MTA’s warehouse where many rows of rock core boxes were neatly stacked. Careful inspection and some simple testing of the rock cores with the blows of a geologic hammer gave support to the reservations about the design. Later, as expected, the schist bedrock at this site was found to be hard to very hard with unconfined compressive strength values estimated to range from at least 70 MPa to over 100 MPa (10,000 psi to 15,000 psi). The tensile strength of the rock was assessed to be minimum 5 MPa (750 psi)."

"Complexity in soil-foundation interaction and subsoil nonlinear behavior cause difficulties and uncertainties in evaluating the actual values of foundation design factors such as settlement. The acquired continuous records of Cone Penetration Test (CPT) can be used to determine the soil profile and characteristics those are applicable in the geotechnical design. In this paper, it has been attempted to present a new non-linear stress-strain approach to estimate the foundations settlement by using CPT data in the form of soil behavior classification charts. This new approach is based on Janbu method (1960s and also 1998). Instead of using fixed and constant values for stress exponent (j) and modulus number (m), continuous coefficient variations can be used. The proposed approach also can be used as a new method to predict pile group settlement. A data bank has been compiled containing twenty-two practical case histories to investigate the accuracy of the predictions made by the proposed and available common methods. The comparisons indicate that the proposed approach is relatively able to predict the settlement close to their real values. Therefore, it can be considered as an alternative method based on valuable CPT data and nonlinear stress-strain approach for foundations and pile groups settlement estimation.INTRODUCTIONComplexity in soil behaviour for settlement analysis is the result of non-linear and time dependent stressstrain behaviour of soils, their elasto-plastic performance under loading and unloading situation and also effects of stress history (Holtz et al., 2011; Fellenius, 2015). Hence, many relations and equations have been proposed to predict foundation settlement, where most of them are based on typical different parameters such as soil stiffness (E), foundation width (B), contact pressure (q) and pressure developing in depth (Janbu, 1967 also 1998; Briaud and Gibbens, 1999; Uzielli and Mayne, 2012).The Janbu approach for settlement estimation, proposed by Janbu in the early 1960s, combines the basic principles of linear and non-linear stress-strain behaviour of material. The method is applied to all types of soils. The relation between stress and strain is a function of two non-dimensional parameters which are unique for any soil: a stress exponent, “j”, and a modulus number, “m”. The Janbu relations are derived from the definition of tangent modulus by the following expression:"

As part of the construction of a multi-span pre-stressed concrete girder bridge for Japan’s new high speed rail line, landslide preventive piles were installed on the flank of a steep slope. The rotary pressin piling method was selected to install three parallel rows of long (up to 36m, i.e., 118ft) and large diameter (1,200mm, i.e., 47.2in) pipe piles safely into the slope as a deterrent measure. They were spaced at 2.5 Dia (3.0m, i.e., 9.8ft) on center and were staggered to allow the groundwater to migrate between the piles. Each pile had a sacrificial cutting shoe welded at its toe for speedy installation and was rotated and simultaneously pressed into soil on the slope through the stable bedrock thereunder to achieve a robust landslide prevention in a relatively short period of time.

The rapid development of real-time monitoring technology for the construction of large underground structures in urban areas can be attributed to: the zero-risk objective, the need for transparency between all parties involved and the control of real cost within the budget. Real-time monitoring can be an integral part of the construction contract (for example when compensation grouting is required) or independent, in particular when measurements of existing structures and buildings bordering the project are to be taken before construction starts. Three examples of extensive field instrumentation schemes are described: a large road tunnel in the Moscow suburbs, a new metro line in Amsterdam and major redevelopment works at a busy Central London rail interchange.

Augered cast-in-place piles have proven to be effective, adaptable and economical for projects throughout the Ohio River Valley. Specifically, they have been used extensively for high-rise structures, sports stadia and large commercial developments along the Cincinnati, Ohio and Northern Kentucky Riverfront. They have been designed and utilized as relatively short toe resistance piles in bedrock, and intermediate to long toe and shaft resistance piles in granular outwash deposits above the bedrock. They have been designed for large axial compression loads as well as moderate axial tension loads and lateral loads. This paper presents a few load test results that demonstrate the range of capabilities of augered cast-in-place piles in the variable subsurface profile along the Cincinnati, Ohio/Northern Kentucky Riverfront.

A mixed-use development comprising of multistoried residential towers, retail and associated infrastructure covering an area of 500,000 m2 is under construction in Dubai. The subsoil conditions consist of calcareous sands with high carbonate and shell content with hard and competent strata encountered at varying depths. To achieve the design requirements of soil stiffness, friction angle, limit differential and total settlements and mitigate the liquefaction due to a seismic event then ground improvement were deemed necessary. In order to provide the most time and cost efficient solution numerous techniques were applied to meet the requirements for all depths such as Vibrocompaction, VC (depth >8m), Dynamic Compaction, DC (depth < 8m)] and Rapid Impact Compaction, RIC (depth <4m). The specified ground improvement requirements were translated into a target Cone Penetration Test, CPT line that served as the defacto performance requirements for the project. Suitable correction factors were applied to the CPT results to account for the high carbonate content following the works of Al-Homoud and Wehr 2006, Belotti and Jamiolkowski , 1991 and Vesic, 1965. Furthermore, the alpha factor, α, used to obtain stiffness from CPT results was applied following A.C. Meigh 1987 and Massarsch & Fellenius, 2005 where high over consolidation ratios (OCR) could be demonstrated.
