Due to recent regulations limiting tolerated lead concentrations in copper alloys, new recycling strategies have to be considered. This study investigates the suitability of technical approaches in order to recycle leaded copper alloys exemplified by CuZn39Pb2 and produce an alloy in compliance with future lead regulations in the European Union. Three pyrometallurgical methods are considered to achieve this goal, namely vacuum distillation, intermetallic precipitation and fractional crystallisation. The impact of essential process parameters i.e. pressure, temperature, time, atmosphere and quantity of additives are identified using thermochemical and kinetic modelling. An experimental implementation reveals a general suitability of all three refining processes. However, the individual efficiency of the different methods strongly differs. Thus, a detailed assessment is carried out in order to provide an evaluation on the efficiencies of these methods from a technological, economical and environmental point of view. Taking a possible industrial realisation into account, the authors recommend the approach of vacuum distillation, although the energy demanded is comparatively high due to the enthalpy of evaporation for zinc, or rather, lead. However, required lead concentrations can be reached quickly without introducing an external element to the material. The prediction of selectivity and evaporation speed, which are immanent variables for a successful implementation, can be validated experimentally. INTRODUCTION In 2016 approximately 1 million tonnes of leaded copper alloy semi-finished goods with an average lead content of 2.1 Ma% have been produced in the European Union (EU). The global production in the same period exceeded 5.5 million tonnes, while the lead concentration has stayed constant at around 2.4 Ma% for the last 50 years. Up to 80 % of the current production volume is covered with end-of-life scraps, which are used for direct re-melting, depending on the alloy composition. Lead has been a popular alloying element in copper alloys in general, and in particular in brass due to its positive impact on various mechanical, physical and chemical properties, especially machinability. Health and environmental concerns were drivers for many governments to implement limitations on lead. In order to further utilise the resource potential of leaded copper scrap, it is inevitable to develop methods to efficiently eliminate lead from circulation as far as possible. "IntroductionThe typical potash processing plant recovers and/ or upgrades from 10% to 20% of its production through the recrystallization process. The feed to the recrystallization section consists of preconcentrated slurries of fine crystal size that cannot be raised to the required product grade by flotation and fine dusts also of low grade and too fine for compaction feed. It produces high grade white potash crystals that can be marketed as a high grade product or blended into the flotation products to raise their grade. In this chapter, a typical leaching (dissolving) and recrystallization operation will be discussed.The crystallization process makes use of the three phase system chemistry of NaCl, KCl, and H,O. The normal potash process operates on a temperature range of 75°F to 95 °F. A three phase slurry feed to the dissolving circuits will be within that range. The potash (KCl) is dissolved by heating the slurry in the presence of sufficient brine to a temperature of 190°F to 200°F. As the slurry is heated, the potash (KCI) dissolves and the salt (NaCI) precipitates. The potash rich brine is then clarified and the salt and other undissolved solids removed by thickening. Clarified brine becomes the crystallizer feed.The hot brine is cooled in evaporative cooling crystallizers. In cooling, the potash precipitates as a high grade white crystal. Crystallization is done in multiple effects to permit energy recovery and control of the process. In a four effect crystallizer the cooling is done by recycling mother liquor counter currently through the first two effect condensors and using brine pond brine for the cooling of the last two.The crystallizer product is removed from the last effect as a slurry at normal process temperature and is fed either to its own centrifuging and drying circuit or blended with the flotation product for centrifuging and drying."

"The fine fraction of tailings is usually excluded from the backfill process and generally disposed on the surface in tailings ponds. Because of the ever increasing demand for fine grinding in the extraction process for improved liberation of valuables in the ore, increased production of fines in the tailings has resulted. The negative impact of surface impoundment of tailings on the environment is well known. Amaratunga and Annor (1989) first presented a concept of fine tailings agglomeration for backfill.This paper presents the development of the novel cold-bond tailings agglomeration (CBTA) technology for non-reactive fine gold mill tailings. For cold-bond agglomeration regular portland cement was used as a binder. In order to cut costs, alternate binders such as lime, and blast furnace slag cement were examined. The effects of binder dosage, curing time, and agglomerate size on the fracture load strength of the agglomerate were studied.Fine tailings agglomerates are mixed with coarse tailings or non-agglomerated fine tailings to make high density fill compositions to be used as underground backfill. Alternatively, the agglomerates can be used as aggregates for surface applications. The paper discusses the environmental and operational benefits of this total tailings utilization and disposal technology.IntroductionIn Canadian mines, mill tailings are probably the most commonly used material for backfill. However, only the coarse fraction of tailings is desirable for use as hydraulic fill or high density fills. The fines are disposed on the surface in tailings ponds since they are unsuitable for underground backfilling owing to the following factors:i) slow settling ratesii) longer percolation timeiii) excessive consumption of binder due to drainageiv) poor compactionFor improved value liberation more milling operations have resolved to fine grinding in their comminution circuits. Gold milling operations driven by down stream leaching processes grind their ores excessively fine. In general, gold mines use hardly any tailings for backfilling. This can result in periodic short falls and the need to search for alternate backfill material from other sources. Apparently, the gold producers are the most identifiable sector which suffer from a shortage of backfill materials ( Amaratunga and Annor, 1989)."

Fuel cell application to mining has been indicated to be potentially beneficial to underground mine worker health and to energy efficiency. In order to define the economic advantages of using hydrogen fuel cell vehicles, a detailed study of operating and capital costs associated with underground loaders and power supply infrastructure has been carried out. The results show that for a typical medium-size mine, operating costs and infrastructure costs are less for the fuel cell option versus diesel. The reverse occurs for capital costs owing to the currently higher cost of fuels cells versus diesel engines. This disparity is expected to decrease given the decline in price associated with fuel cell technology advances. Related market issues for fuel cell manufacturers are also presented. Despite the difference in cost, the resources and mine infrastructure required to operate loaders, and base design of the mine loader, is similar for diesel and fuel call versions.

Combination of thioglycollic acid and citric acid had a much stronger depressive effect, and the mixture depressed chalcopyrite as well as pyrite between pH 8 and 11 without affecting the flotation of calcite and dolomite; ! Calcite could be separated from chalcopyrite and pyrite; dolomite could be separated from pyrite but not from chalcopyrite under the tested conditions.

"Chairman - To start this discussion off, I wonder if Mr. Dave Livingstone or Mr. Jeffrey of Granisle Copper would give a description of the crushing plant at Granisle since it is somewhat different from the usual plant, W. N. Jeffrey - Granisle Copper The main difference between the Granisle crushing plant and many others is the Livingstone method of putting the screens under the crushers instead of above them. This method allows a more compact arrangement and eliminates the heavy superstructure required to take care of the screen vibration when the screens are mounted above the crushers. There is a small surge bin above the tertiary crusher which takes care of the variation in circulating loads.All three crushers are gyratory crushers. There is no grizzly ahead of the primary crusher but the fines are removed from the primary crusher discharge at the first screen and sent directly to the fine ore bins. "Dynamic characteristics of frozen soil is important for the safe, effective and rapid construction in cold regions and artificially frozen engineering. In this paper, dynamic characteristics of frozen clay with various low temperature and different strain rate were studied by using Split Hopkinson Pressure Bar (SHPB) test and numerical simulation test. Variation of dynamical parameters and dynamic stress-strain curves of frozen clay were obtained and analyzed. The results of these test show that: Frozen clay exhibits temperature effect and strain rate effect that the failure type tends from plastic failure to brittle failure with the increase of strain rate or decrease of temperature; Under impact loading, frozen clay exhibits three typical dynamic stress-strain curves as strain rate increases, and the maximum strain of frozen clay only linear increases with strain rate.INTRODUCTIONArtificial freezing technology has been widely used in the construction of underground engineering, such as the coal mine shaft, the deep foundation pit, the urban metro and subsea tunnel, etc. Research on dynamic mechanical behavior of artificial frozen soil will provide supports for these artificially frozen engineering (Xu et al. 1998; Ma 2009). However, the dynamic mechanical research on frozen soil is mainly carried out at low frequencies or small amplitudes of the waves, behavior of frozen soil under impact loads or high strain rate loads has not been made clear."

The Molopo Farms Complex is a major, layered ultramafic/mafic, early Proterowic intrusion which is totally covered by sediments of the Karoo and Kalahari Fonnations and situated in southern Botswana and northeastern South Africa. The approximately 3000 m thick, generally fine- to medium-grained ultramafic and mafic cumulates are intrusive into equivalents of Thmsvaal Supergroup sediments and lavas. Multiphase defonnation resulted in tilting and segmentation of the Complex into individual tectonic blocks. Sr isotopes document at least two chemically distinct parental liquids which interacted in a complex manner to form an approximately 1000 m thick rhythmically layered succession which straddles the ultramafic/mafic boundary. Repeated mixing resulted in a complex cryptic layering pattern and numerous sulfide-enriched layers which contain significant PGE+Au concentrations.

Project managers aim to maximise the NPV of their projects, but don't always appreciate the relationship between mine throughput, project value and the discount rate being used to evaluate their projects. Rate of production or throughput is perhaps one of the most crucial decisions a project manager must make, but if this choice is made arbitrarily, much effort may be spent on a feasibility study that does not optimise project value. The timing of the study in relation to the stage of exploration is examined and simple techniques are presented that project engineers and managers can use to home in on a production rate which will give their project the greatest chance of success.

Corrosion was observed on the aluminum pressure plates and dress-caps that hold the glazing in place on a curtain-walled building, The multi-storey building in question is situated in the downtown area of a busy Canadian city, For aesthetic reasons, the original design required the dress-caps (which have L-shaped cross-sections) to be externally clad with thin copper sheet. Since the aluminum was in direct contact with the copper trim, galvanic corrosion developed that resulted in damage to the aluminum components, Soluble corrosion products washing off the copper trim may also have contributed to the accelerated corrosion of the aluminum, The aluminum pressure plates and dress-caps are being systematically replaced with components made of fibre-reinforced plastic. The outsides of these new components will be clad with thin copper sheet in order to preserve the original appearance of the building.

Information on the elements contained in E-Waste is important from the viewpoint of recycling. We analyzed several components of waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) collected from citizens. The distributions of the minor metals in WEEE were determined with elemental mapping and chemical analyses. The annual change in elemental composition was investigated by analyzing equipment manufactured in different years. The information will be of use for separation techniques required for future advanced recycling.

As populations grow and industry expands, the limited fresh water resources available are increasingly under stress. This situation creates conflict between communities and industry; and the sustainability of both is threatened. The symbiotic relationship between community and industry highlights the need to develop innovative solutions to these water shortages. The sea may hold the key to providing the resource to permit the development of industry, the sustainability of communities, and the protection of the dwindling legacy water resources around the world. Desalination technologies have developed to where it is now economically viable to create industrial and potable water quality from seawater. Nowhere is this development more important than in the arid region of Northern Chile, where high copper prices have encouraged a boom in mine development.

Modelling the geometry of a vein is a crucial step in resources estimation. The resulting models are used as mineralization domain boundaries and have a direct impact on the tonnage of estimated resources. Deterministic models are often built using time consuming wireframing techniques usually based on hand interpretation of the drillhole intercepts. Another approach consists in coding the drillhole samples by a function of their distance to the veins contacts. The coding is subsequently used for modelling the vein contacts away from drillholes. This is a more efficient approach and is able to provide a measure of tonnage uncertainty. The use of location-dependent variograms improves the modelling by incorporating local changes in the anisotropy of the vein structure. This combined approach results in more realistic vein models, particularly when the geometry of the vein has been are altered by folding, shearing and other structural processes. The approach is illustrated on a realistic case study.

Renewable assets have large upfront capital costs but minimal operating expenses over their lifetimes. In some instances, deals can be structured so that direct capital investment is feasible, with paybacks typically within 5-7 years. In others, the burden of renewable CAPEX must be removed in order to create an attractive alternative to fossil-fuel-fired generation. Hatch has designed and oversees the construction of a renewable installation, which is financed, owned and operated by a special-purpose entity. Renewable energy is then delivered to the mining company via a customized power purchase agreement at a price that is lower than the levelized cost of fossil fuels. In this way, the mining company removes the burden of the renewable energy CAPEX from its balance sheet, thus freeing up capital, decreasing risk, and making the predictable, lower cost of renewable power more attractive than the variable cost of fossil fuels. This paper presents the above business model and success stories of hybrid power at remote sites (wind and solar coupled with diesel engine).

Landslides not only cause interruption of road traffic but also cause damage to passing by vehicles and injure people in Taiwan. Due to the budget limitation of government, the overall assessments and maintenance of all road slops cannot be fulfilled. Priority of road for maintenance is a crucial task for road maintenance department to identify. The purposes of this research are to develop an assessment method for the landslide risk and to make strategies to maintain or repair the slopes along mountain roads. To aim both needs to take into account the environmental conditions of the slopes, the engineering measures for stabilizing road slopes, the transportation issues, and the human concerns when dealing with the slopes maintenance along the mountain roads. This study firstly establishes the Landslides Damage Risk Evaluation Model (LDREM) to calculate the risk of slope failure, considering the probability of landslides, temporal probability, spatial impact probability, the value of human life, transportation time increased, and travel cost due to detour etc., and then the loss of life and transportation can be calculated. Secondly, based on the value of risk and the risk evaluation, considering the risk acceptance criteria for loss of life could provide assistance for road maintenance department to determine the priority of mountain roads for maintenance.

Kahama Mining Corporation Limited (KMCL), a wholly owned subsidiary of Barrick Gold Corporation, operates the Bulyanhulu gold mine. The operation has been in commercial production since April 2001 and is the first modern underground mine to be developed on the Lake Victoria goldfield in Tanzania. Bulyanhulu is located in a major mineralised system along an emerging gold trend. This area, the Lake Victoria Greenstone belt, has been the focus of significant exploration and development programs since 1994, with over 34 million ounces of gold having been discovered and four new mines commissioned. The Bulyanhulu project has accounted for just over a third of the gold resources discovered during this period. From an initial exploration program, which outlined a resource of 1.37 million ounces of gold, Bulyanhulu now hosts a reserve of some 12 million ounces in a resource base, the limits of which are, as yet, undefined. The Bulyanhulu property is located approximately 56 km south of Lake Victoria, in northwestern Tanzania, eastern Africa. A Mining Licence issued by the Government of Tanzania on July 23, 1999 grants to KMCL the exclusive right to mine a concession area covering 51.48 km2. The property is reached via a 75-km road from the main road to Dar es Salaam. The nearest towns are Mwanza to the north on Lake Victoria, 155 km by road and ferry, Kahama, 86 km by road to the south and Isaka, 126 km by road. Isaka is on the rail line between Mwanza and Dar es Salaam and has facilities to receive heavy equipment, and a fuel depot. A gravel airstrip, 1,700 m long has been constructed at the property.

"The PSI-200 is a rugged, innovative, and easy to install on-stream size analyzer. Its calibration is simple and can be done on-line, during operation. Two measurements are displayed on the panel, which are expressed as percent passing a selected size, or as any statistical diameter. These two measurements are given as two continuous 4-20 mA output signals. Operation alarms are displayed on the screen or are given as digital output signals.The PSI-200 has been used in various applications at Lakefield Research. Particle sizes ranging from 10 µm to 450 µm have been monitored successfully, with an accuracy of 1- 2%. Having the size measured continuously and reliably, optimum conditions have been established for the grinding circuit, resulting in a superior quality in pilot plant testing.INTRODUCTIONThe challenge of any operating plant is to optimize product quality, maximize throughput and minimize operating costs. The importance of particle size measurement at a grinding circuit is well recognized. Monitoring continuously the particle size and keeping the product as uniform as possible is crucial to the whole mill operation regardless of the nature of the operation.Various techniques and instruments have been developed over the years attempting to give reliable on-line size analysis data. The operating difficulties and the reliability of these equipment still present major drawbacks and none of them proved to be widely accepted.PSI-200 is a relatively new on-line analyzer. The operation is simple and of low cost and the maintenance required minimal. It measures particle size and it displays two parameters of the solids size distribution, either weight fraction of passing a certain size or any statistical diameter. Two analog outputs can be sent to a process control system and through a supervisory control loop the correct action can be taken to maintain the desired particle size (perhaps adjust the feed rate to the grinding mill)."
