Over five decades ago Kitchener et al. in England and La Mer and Healy in the US were advancing our understanding and application of flocculants, primarily related to water treatment and filtration of sludge. This paper identifies the beneficial uses of flocculants in the mining industry and revisits some less common applications. Flocculants are used in unique ways in the mining industry: (a) to increase the effectiveness of sediment ponds to achieve discharge compliance; (b) to eliminate air emissions and costs associated with concentrate drying; (c) to reduce soil loss by applying a flocculant to erodible soils, and reducing wind and water erosion; (d) to remove/thicken metal precipitates in acid rock drainage treatment; and (e) to enhance clarification and thickening in mineral processing. The mechanism of how flocculants, coagulations and potentially-determining ions function is described and how their use can be controlled and optimized. The potential toxic effects of flocculants and coagulants when used to achieve effluent permit discharge compliance for suspended solids is discussed. A review of numerous best management practice (BMP) guidelines for the design and operation of sediment ponds treating mine site runoff to remove total suspended solids (TSS) and turbidity revealed an absence of a predictive methodology to address regulatory discharge compliance for TSS concentration, turbidity and flocculant-induced toxicity. An essential component of pond design is the need to determine whether flocculants and/or other settling aids are required based on the site-specific soil particle size distributions upslope of the pond. Procedures are provided to predict the need for settling aids and estimate pond discharge quality and downstream impact for TSS, turbidity, toxicity and sub-lethal toxicity. The need to develop BMP guidelines are discussed for (a) the application of flocculant to surface soils to reduce erosion, (b) the application of flocblocks to increase the ?sediment control? aspects of erosion and sediment control, as part of the mine site erosion control plan strategy and (c) the application of flocculant to silt socks to treat mine site runoff.

In spite of advances in cutting tool technology, the understanding of the basic wear behavior and failure mechanisms needs further study. Tool wear is the main factor contributing to geometrical error and thermal damage in machined components. Manifested as a reduction in tool life, it also affects the workpiece surface finish, increases cutting forces and induces residual stresses. Furthermore, the emergence of high and ultra-high speed machining processes necessitates the investigation of tool wear under these severe working conditions. Tungsten carbide-cobalt composite material has been used traditionally as wear resistant materials for many years. One main application of this material is in cutting tools. WC-Co tools consist of hard WC particles imbedded in a tough Co matrix, which functions as a binder phase. More recently, Cubic boron nitride (CBN) tool material have attracted special attention due to its high hardness and excellent wear resistance. Boron nitride in its cubic form is known to be the hardest material next only to diamond. In this paper microstructural and tribological properties of commercial grade WC-Co and CBN cutting tool materials are investigated under high speed cutting conditions. The CBN cutting tools were found to be superior to tungsten carbide (WC) tools. Four-fold increase in productivity and significant reduction in chipping and cratering was achieved for CBN as compared to WC. Wear mechanisms are proposed and are related to the observed wear characteristics in the cutting zone.

This paper presents an experimental study conducted to facilitate the use of RFID on construction job sites. The study focuses on deployment settings to provide data acquisition with higher accuracy for indoor location sensing. It provides extension to the state-of-the-art in this field as it addresses the impact of metal media proximity to RFID tags, the reasonable duration for data capturing, number of RFID tags employed and the distance between them. Low cost passive RFID tags were used in the experiments where each tag is used as a reference point with a known location. Five hundred and forty (514) experiments were conducted in lab environment using a 3m by 3m test bed that is dynamically rearranged to generate 15 test beds and a total of 67713 data sets were collected and analyzed. The collected data were captured from nine locations for each test bed at four time intervals. Received Signal Strength Indicator (RSSI) was used as the main attribute for signal measurement to process the captured data. Results of the data analysis performed are studied under four main categories: duration, number of tags, locations of tags and metal interference. The best duration was found to be the 15 second in the test bed with the least number of tags; as the short amount of time to capture data did not allow creation of a lot of interference among the emitted signals. Within each test bed, errors occurred most at points where the received signals were not well distributed in a 360 degree vicinity of the data capturing point. It means that the center point of each test bed resulted in lowest errors and the points located on the extremities led to the highest errors. Finally, metal objects were found to have major impact on the accuracy of the captured data; to the level where reliable values for errors could not be calculated in the test beds attached to metal objects. In summary, the results of the experimental study and related findings are expected to provide guidelines to the users of RFID technology for localization in building construction.

This paper comprises a description of on-stream analysis instrumentation, including sample handling, X-ray optics and data processing. It also includes a discussion of some typical applications of an on-stream analyzer as related to the mineral processing industry. Introduction T WO automatic X-ray spectrometers have been developed for the simultaneous analysis of as many as six elements in a given sample. These instruments, namely the On-Stream Analyzer and the new Vacuum Simultaneous Spectrometer, have been designed specifically for process control in industry where large numbers of static samples or a number of flowing sample streams must be analyzed continuously with both speed and accuracy. This paper is concerned particularly with the application of these instruments for the continuous analysis of dynamic samples. The Instruments The On-Stream Analyzer and the Vacuum Simultaneous Spectrometer are intended to serve industry by offering two basic approaches to the problem of continuous sampling of flowing sample streams. The On-stream Analyzer (Figure 1) is designed for the completely automatic and unattended analysis of flowing sample streams in a programmed cycle of operation.

"Since the late 1970s, extensive work has been carried out at Placer Dome Inc. 's Dome Mine to develop new mining methods and equipment to improve the productivity of narrow vein mining (Mining Magazine, Oct. 1986, pp. 308-317; Mar. 1988, pp. 176-/79). Abstract - The Aubry pegmatites are located on the Seymour Lake property, 15 km north of Lake Nipigon in northwestern Ontario. The property lies within the Caribou Lake-Marshall Lake greenstone belt along the English River-Wabigoon subprovince boundary of the Superior province of the Canadian Shield. The property was optioned in March 2001 by Linear Resources (now Linear Gold Corp.), who carried out gridding, prospecting, geological mapping, soil and lithogeochemical sampling, trenching, channel sampling, and a total of 1,866 m of diamond drilling in 32 holes. The Aubry pegmatites are classified by Breaks et al. (2003) as complex type, spodumene-subtype, lithium-cesium-tantalum pegmatites (Cerný, 1989). These pegmatites generally form under high-pressure-low-temperature conditions, display complex internal zoning, have relatively low Nb/Ta ratios in the ore-forming assemblages, and contain significantly elevated tantalum values (Cerný, 1989). Other examples of spodumene-subtype pegmatites include the formerly producing Hugo pegmatite in South Dakota, and the currently producing Greenbushes pegmatite in Australia. The Aubry pegmatites occur as an undulating system of stacked sheets that dip moderately to steeply eastward over a 1-km strike length. The main portion of the North Aubry pegmatite ranges in true thickness from 10 to 28 m over a strike length of 125 m, whereas the thickest portion of the South Aubry has an estimated true thickness of 15 to 16 m over a minimum strike length of 95 m. The North Aubry pegmatite remains open downdip and along strike to the north, whereas the South Aubry pegmatite remains open downdip and along strike in both directions. The Aubry pegmatites are among the most highly evolved in Ontario, with the southern end of the North Aubry (trench 5/6 area) being the most highly fractionated (Breaks et al., 2002). Channel samples from the trench NA-5 area of the North Aubry pegmatite produced values up to 2.49 wt.% Ta2O5 over 4 m. Coarse manganotantalite crystals, up to 5 cm in diameter, from this trench contain up to 84.9 wt.% Ta2O5 (Breaks et al., 2002). Drill hole SL02-31 in the trench NA-6 area gave values of 0.046 wt.% Ta2O5 over 17.7 m, including 1 m @ 0.464 wt.% Ta2O5. Further exploration will focus on defining the grade of the North Aubry zone, extending and defining both known pegmatites, and identifying additional Ta-rich zones within them. Lithogeochemical and enzyme leach soil geochemical data suggest the presence of multiple undiscovered pegmatites on the property.

Ltd. to develop and demonstrate advanced technologies at Pansan mine, Huainan, China. A comprehensive approach assessed fundamental strata and coal seam methane conditions during mining and optimized mining sequences and coal mine methane capture systems. The project demonstrated a practical approach and procedures for advanced coal and methane co-extraction systems, improved mining safety and efficiency, increased methane capture and use, and reduced fugitive methane emissions.RÉSUMÉ Le présent article donne les principaux résultats d’un grand projet de partenariat Asie- Pacifique entre le CSIRO (Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation) [Organisation de recherche scientifique et industrielle du Commonwealth australien] et le Huainan Mining Industry Group Co. A mini- or micro-machine is a small electro- mechanical device. There are several existing applications of micro-sensors such as the accelerometers used in automobile airbags or the force sensors and grippers used at the ends of micro-surgery tools. Potential applications of existing mini- and micro-technologies are possible and could be used to improve the control and efficiency of fragmentation, heap leaching and other mining and mineral processing operations. A more radical proposition is to devise mass-produced, possibly disposable, minimachines that would operate in large groups. These would be the basis of highly selective, efficient, flexible, and clean mining and mineral processing methods. The paper is intended to promote discussion of how innovative applications of mini-technologies can be used to improve and radically change current mining and mineral processing methods.

"This article makes evident the shortcomings of the current operation of oxygen pipes as well as the damages they cause and why they cause them. When focusing on the causes and effects of these drawbacks, it was possible to develop a new family of thermal lances that could pierce a taphole with the precision of a drill but with the capacity to complete the whole operation. Although efforts have been made to replace oxygen pipes since they are annoying, dangerous and inefficient, nobody had worked to improve the way the traditional oxygen pipe taps/perforates the furnaces and reactors tapholes. In fact, developments made in drills and robotic arms, have failed to replace the oxygen pipe, which despite their negative side effects have been used for more than a century. Observation and theory were key to radically transform this humble tool into a dependable and efficient support in the operation. A good news that it is worthwhile to share for the benefit of all of us, passionate about the world of pyro metallurgy.INTRODUCTION Normally, reports and papers prepared for conventions, symposia or other technical events related to metallurgy aim to relevant topics in the operational field, probably because in them lay the scale economies every company pursues. We intend to give relevance to a matter normally disregarded in operations, but that unmistakably vital: if the furnace or reactor cannot be bled, the pyrometallurgical process will not be completed. Besides, if the tapping task is difficult or is long delayed, the availability of the furnace will be reduced. Consequently, there will be a waste of energy and workers will be exposed to dangerous levels of radiation as well as to work overload and physical injuries Apart from these basic effects, in tapping operations where oxygen pipes are used, we can see serious damages in the smelting furnace, especially in the taphole components such as refractory bricks, taphole jackets and water cooled plates. This paper intends to show that taking care of the tapping task can significantly upgrade not only to the tapping operation itself, but also the whole plant productivity."

"Considering overgrinding in a grinding process, the grinding characteristics of comminuted hematite products using a HPGR and a conventional CC were comparatively studied. The major properties including particle size, grinding kinetics and grinding technical efficiency (Et) were investigated. Individual size distributions (ISDs) of -2.0mm in a HPGR product showed a more significant “double-peak” characteristic than a CC product. As a result, HPGR products were finer and had a wider full-size distribution because of the greater proportion of fines. The parameters m and zi in m-th order grinding kinetics were analyzed by the partial-derivative method and the critical time tc(tc = exp (1/ zi)) was obtained. zi mainly affected the breakage rate when t < tc; otherwise, m mainly affected the breakage rate. In these tests, tc was considerably higher than the grinding times, and HPGR products yielded a higher zi-value than the CC product for the same sieve size. This indicated that HPGR products had a higher breakage rate and needed a shorter grinding time for a certain grinding fineness. Et was calculated by simulating the size distributions of batch grinding products. HPGR products gave a lower Et at a decreasing rate than the CC products for -2.0 mm feed and -0.5mm feed, and then showed a slightly higher Et for -2.0+0.5 mm feed. This indicated that overginding in HPGR full-size products was more serious under the condition of coarse grinding, whereas the efficiency was higher and overgrinding weakened significantly in HPGR coarse products because of screening-out fines. Based on the above research, a new process of “ultra-crushing in HPGR – classified grinding” was advanced, reducing ores tonnage into first stage ball mill significantly, improving grinding efficient and weakening overgrinding in the whole grinding process.INTRODUCTIONIn mineral processing, comminution accounts for a substantial portion (approximately 60~70%) of the energy consumed in plants. As an ultra-fine crushing equipment,the application of the HPGR for industrial comminution has been paid close attention because of its low specific energy, low steel consumption, high capacity and high ratio of reduction, among others (Schonert, 1998; Norgate & Weller, 1994; Fuerstenau & Kapur, 1995). HPGRs comprise two counter-rotating rolls that draw feed material into the roll gap. One roll is fixed to the mainframe, while the other movable roll is mounted on slides and positioned by hydraulic rams. The specific pressing force (SPF) (i.e., total force divided by projected roller area) is typically in the range of 3~9 N/mm2 depending on the application, while pressures of up to 1000 N/mm2 have been measured within the operating gap (Maxton , Morley, & Bearman , 2003)."

The lead-zinc-copper-silver ores mined by Brunswick Mining and Smelting Corporation Limited at their No. 12 underground mine and No. 6 open-pit operation, and treated by distinct concentration processes in separate plants, present difficult metallurgical problems because of the extremely fine dissemination of the valuable minerals with pyrite and pyrrhotite. The problem of concentration is further complicated, in the No. 12 ore, by the presence of a varying content of graphitic carbon. This paper describes the milling of No. 12 ore and the production of copper, lead and zinc concentrates by differential flotation.

The stable crystalline form at atmospheric temperature is referred to as 'rhombic' sulphur. It is bright yellow and has a specific gravity of 2.05, equivalent to 129.2 lb./cu. Ft. Above 204°F. sulphur has another stable crystalline form, referred to as 'monoclinic'. This is reddish-brown and is slightly less dense than the rhombic variety (122.4 lb./cu. Ft.). Sulphur in bulk form weighs 84 to 90 lb. per cu. Ft. Sulphur melts at approximately 240°F. to a straw coloured liquid which is quite viscous."

"The area encompassed by this report is the eastern and northern Cordillera, shown on the composite map accompanying these background papers. It extends from the 49th pm•allel to the Arctic Ocean and from the Rocky Mountain and Tintina trenches to the Interior Plains. The Mackenzie delta is included in the discussions because of the implications of the bedrock geology of the Arctic Plateau and Coastal Plain on the hydrocarbon and mineral potential beneath it.The eastern and northern Cordillera forms the back-bone of the Western Canada sedimentary basin and from it most of the principles of orogenesis and epeirogenesis relating to the understanding of the structural, depositional and fossil record of the basin have been derived. It may be divided roughly into two parts, reflecting basic differences not only in structural style but also in mineral potential. The more easterly and younger rocks generally contain hydro-carbons, coal and non-metallic minerals; the more westerly and older rocks contain metallic and industrial minerals."

"DEVELOPMENT of oil emulsion mud dates back to the early days of rotary drilling when oil was added to the drilling mud solely for the purpose of freeing stuck drill pipe. After the drill pipe was freed, and drilling resumed, this oil was considered a contaminant. Efforts were made to remove the oil but some of it remained and was emulsified with the drilling mud, thus forming a mechanical emulsion.During the late 1930's, operators found that adding crude oil to drilling muds seemed to alleviate 'sticky-hole' problems and so oil was allowed to remain in the mud. This practice was adopted when it was found that faster drilling rates and longer bit life were obtained. These observations led to the development of emulsion drilling muds. During the past five years their application has become more widespread because of the lower fluid losses obtained, greater lubrication qualities, faster penetration rates, and generally better hole conditions.An emulsion may be defined as a two-phase system consisting of a mixture of either finely divided oil droplets in water or of finely divided water droplets in oil. The surrounding liquid is known as the continuous phase. The emulsifiers reduce the interfacial tension, making the droplets tend to repel each other so that they remain dispersed and stabilized. These emulsions are classified as oil-in-water or as water-in-oil, depending upon whether water or oil, respectively, is the continuous phase. Briefly, close inspection shows that they consist essentially of globules of• the one liquid suspended in a continuous mass of the other liquid. Oil emulsion muds are usually of the oil-in-water type. Two basic types of emulsifiers •commonly used in Canadian muds are soaps and lignites."

Selective flotation of molybdenite and chalcopyrite using various oxidation treatments (i.e., ozone treatment, hydrogen peroxide, and Fenton-like reagent) was studied in this work. It was found that ozone treatment produced a depressing effect on both minerals, resulting in a lower separation of both minerals. On the other hand, oxidation treatment using hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and Fenton-like reagent could deliver selective oxidation on chalcopyrite surface and depress its floatability. However, bench-scale copper- molybdenum (Cu-Mo) flotation tests show that oxidation treatment using H2O2 required a higher dosage of H2O2 and a longer treatment time in order to deliver comparable flotation results to that of conventional Cu- Mo flotation using NaHS treatment. On the contrary, Fenton-like reagent could deliver selective Cu-Mo flotation results comparable to that of NaHS treatment at a lower dosage of H2O2 and a shorter conditioning time. Contact angle measurements and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis were employed to understand the depressing mechanism of these oxidation treatments. It was found that the chalcopyrite surface covered by various oxidation products that render the surface hydrophilic. Meanwhile, the surface of molybdenite was slightly oxidized, making the surface remained hydrophobic. INTRODUCTION Molybdenite (MoS2), the main source of molybdenum, is associated with copper sulfide minerals, mainly chalcopyrite (CuFeS2), as a trace mineral. Molybdenite is a valuable mineral and plays an important role in making the copper-molybdenum (Cu-Mo) processing plant economically viable (Laskowski, Castro, & Ramos, 2013). Therefore, it is important to recover molybdenite efficiently and effectively and separate it from copper minerals. Conventional separation of copper and molybdenum minerals is usually carried out in selective Cu- Mo flotation process using a copper depressant (i.e., sodium hydrosulfide (NaHS), Noke’s reagent, or cyanides) (Ansari & Pawlik, 2007; Bulatovic, 2007). However, this process still suffers due to imperfect molybdenum recovery. Moreover, the copper depressants use in this process are toxic and harmful to the environment. As alternative, various methods have been developed to replace these toxic and hazardous depressants, for example, by synthesizing new non-toxic or low-toxic depressants or by using various oxidation methods such as sodium hypochlorite in an alkaline medium, manganese dioxide, oxygen, and plasma pre-treatment (United States Patent Office Patent No. US 2559104 A, 1951; Patent No. US2238250 A, 1941; Barzyk, Malysa, & Pomianowski, 1981; Hirajima et al., 2014). However, the oxidation phenomenon and mechanisms are still not clear since detailed surface analyses have not done and the plasma pre-treatment method is facing technical issues for industrial scale application.

"Layered aluminum structures assembled with rivets are often found in aircraft fuselage. These structures are exposed to various mechanical loads and a range of environmental conditions that contribute to their ""aging"". The rivet holes are the source of stress concentrations and the location of crack nucleation and growth. Detection and sizing of second and third layer cracks under fasteners represent a major challenge for non-destructive evaluation (NDE) technicians. Electromagnetic methods are currently the most feasible NDE techniques that are capable of successfully inspecting such structures. However, different probe lift-offs, due to protruding rivets and paint coatings, or interlayer separations, due to sealant or air gaps, pose difficulties in detecting and sizing cracks. In addition, the use of conventional eddy current technique is limited due to the inverse relationship between the probe spatial resolution and its field penetrability. In this paper, we present an alternative approach that overcomes the previously mentioned shortcomings by using pulsed eddy current excitation and magnetoresistive sensor pick-up. "A mine shaft is one main development method of establishing access in an underground mine. The construction technology of the mine shaft sinking is complicated and large equipment setup on surface and in the mine shaft. The paper briefly reviews a single-line operation method, parallel operation method and mixed operation method as well as the features of the one operation method with the excavation, lining and installation. The special construction technology mainly would include ground freezing methods, full diameter shaft drilling methods, caisson methods, grouting technology and concrete curtain methods as well as other methods. The paper summarizes the shaft sinking numbers and effects by the special construction methods during different periods. The paper states the shaft sinking conditions and the each created record conditions in the coal, metallurgy, non-ferrous metal, hydropower, highway, railway, nonmetallic and other industries. The paper has a prediction on the shaft sinking requirements and development tendency in the future for China.INTRODUCTIONA mine shaft is one main development method of access in an underground mine. In recent years in China the new shaft mines represent 45% of the total number of new mines. With the development of new mining area under construction and the development of deeper mines, the ratio of the mine shaft as access for underground mines will increase. The construction technology of the mine shaft engineering will be complicated, the operation site footprint will be small and the working environment will be more difficult. The mine shaft sinking operation will often be varied by the geological conditions and affected by underground water inflows, seam gas outbursts, geothermal and other natural conditions. The safe construction of the mine shaft sinking will be challenged by all these conditions. Although the mine shaft engineering will only be about 5% of the total mine roadway engineering, the mine shaft construction period often will take over 40% of the total mine construction period. With the progress of modernized mine production technology and the construction of a high production and high efficient mine, the mine transportation roadways mostly would be set in the seam and the engineered amount of the mine rock roadways reduced year by year could cause more prominent long extensions of the mine shaft construction period. Therefore, in order to speed up the construction, to shorten the mine construction period and to realize the investment benefits as early as possible, the technical level of the mine shaft sinking should firstly be improved and the construction speed of the mine shaft engineering and sinking should be speeded up, which would have important significant benefits."
