One key to maintaining successful mining operations in today?s global economy is in having the ability to access real-time machine operating data ([1] G. Brown, B. Ebacher, W. Koellner,2000)([2] Brochure of Siemens E&A, Order Number 141000-1). With recent and ongoing advances in mining equipment systems it is imperative that mine managers have full knowledge of the status of their equipment at any given point in time. This knowledge is critical to ensuring that the productivity of each and every machine is maximized. Knowledge of machine status is only the first step, however, in controlling and optimizing a piece of mining equipment. Computer based diagnostic systems, traditionally offered on mining equipment, have provided a link for collecting data and trouble-shooting problems as they occur. One problem existed, though, that those systems stopped short of providing full drive systems access. A maintenance technician could see the data but to make critical adjustments or make repairs the technician needed to be on the machine. In extreme cases the machine would be down until OEM assistance could reach the mine site. The key then to reducing down-time and maximizing machine productivity was creating a system that could not only monitor drive systems but also provide remote access to those systems. Essentially a link needed to be created through which a technician could gain drive access remotely then make adjustments or repairs without being on the piece of equipment. This paper will introduce AccessDirectTM, a new remote diagnostic system for Bucyrus mining shovels and draglines. AccessDirectTM combines all three important elements of remote diagnostics: ? Vital Signs and Production Monitoring (SiRAS-M) ? Automatic analysis (SiRAS-A) of faults, and tracking of trends for preventive and reliability centered maintenance , and ? Fast, direct Intervention (SiRAS ? I) for troubleshooting support, repairs, and system optimization.

"Recent innovations in metal smelting technology utilize continuous oxygen-enriched smelting and converting processes which are capable of producing off-gases containing up to 60% SO2 or more. Other SO2 recovery processes, involving solvent absorption and steam or vacuum regeneration, can produce off-gases with SO2 concentrations nearing 100%.Processing of these high-concentration SO2 off-gases in conventional sulfuric acid plants can cause excessively high catalyst bed temperatures and poor SO2 conversion. In order to avoid these problems, a conventional acid plant design must dilute these high SO2 process gasses with dilution air in order to provide the required oxygen to effectively convert the SO2 and provide a heat sink (via the inert N2) such that the exothermic reaction, SO2 + ½ O2 ???SO3, does not exceed the temperature limit of the catalyst or the converter vessel.MECS, Inc. (MECS) has proven that a high SO2 feed gas design can be a viable option which can increase energy recovery, reduce energy consumption and potentially reduce capital costs."

"Systematic characterization of the mineralogy of massive sulfide ore deposits can provide valuable insights into ore genesis and metallurgical processing that would not be apparent otherwise. We describe a method wherein (1) normative mineral abundances are calculated from whole-rock chemical assays using an algorithm, (2) the results are cast in block models, (3) the results are then verified with automated image analysis of a subset of samples prepared as grain mounts by backscattered electron imaging and X-ray mapping on a scanning electron microscope, and (4) those verified results are integrated with textural data determined by optical microscopy.The technique is applied to the magmatic Ni-Cu-Co sulfides of the Ovoid orebody, based on geochemical assays of 3175 whole-rock samples. Three principal ore zones are defined in the Ovoid. Type I ore occurs in the center of the deposit; it is magnetite-rich and pyrrhotite-poor with intermediate contents of pentlandite and chalcopyrite. Type II ore surrounds Type I ore and is pentlanditechalcopyrite- rich with intermediate contents of pyrrhotite and magnetite. Type III ore occurs at the base and along the outer periphery of the northern part of the orebody; it is pyrrhotite-rich and chalcopyrite- poor with an intermediate content of pentlandite, and a low-to-intermediate content of magnetite. La caractérisation systématique de la minéralogie des gîtes de sulfures massifs peut fournir des indications précieuses sur la genèse des minerais et le traitement métallurgique qui ne seraient pas disponibles par d’autres méthodes. Nous décrivons un procédé par lequel (1) un algorithme est utilisé pour calculer l’abondance de minéraux normatifs à partir d’analyses lithogéochimiques, (2) les résultats sont exprimés dans des blocs diagrammes, (3) les résultats sont par la suite validés par analyse d’image automatisée sur un microscope électronique à balayage en électrons rétrodiffusés et par cartographie en rayons X sur des échantillons constitués de grains montés en résine, et (4) les résultats de cette validation sont combinés aux données texturales obtenues par microscopie optique.Cette technique est appliquée aux sulfures magmatiques de Ni-Cu-Co du gisement Ovoïde, en utilisant les analyses géochimiques de 3175 échantillons de roche totale. "A dynamic simulation of a mine-mill complex has been conducted using networked microcomputers (IBM PC/AT and IBM PC/XT). These models allow simultaneous operation of an open pit using shovels and trucks, a primary crusher, and a secondary crushing plant. Each process transmits information via the network, linking all operations together. The effects of blasting, ore quality, equipment utilization and configuration on productivity can be studied either interactively or from a report listing at the end of each shift. Programs are menu driven leading the user through the decisions required in day to day operations. The mine-mill simulator is currently being used as a teaching tool at Queen's University to provide senior mining and mineral processing engineering students with an experience and appreciation for the operating problems across the mine-mill interface. The need for coordination and close communication between the mine and mill can be aptly demonstrated using these models. The simulator could be used to contribute to the training of operating personnel in a real mining operation. INTRODUCTIONThis paper describes a computer simulator that is capable of showing the interactions and operating strategies between a mine and a secondary crushing plant. The simulator uses two models developed at Queen's University; one for open pit mining and the second for secondary crushing. PITSIM is a dynamic shovel/truck haulage model origin2lly developed by P.D.D. Chick (1) and K.G. Fytas (2) to solve shovel/truck scheduling problems. CRUSHSOFT is a dynamic secondary crushing plant model developed by R.J. Tucker (3) and C.A. Harris (4) to study alternative operating and control strategies in a crushing plant."

"This paper focuses on determining the favorable geological and hydrogeological conditions for forming uranium occurrences in the Froqlos-Jabal Abou Rabah region, Palmyrides, Syria. Eighty rock samples from this area were analyzed by spectrometric gamma-ray technique to determine the radioactive concentrations of eU and eTh, and of %K. Uranium concentrations in shallow and deep groundwaters were also determined. High uranium concentrations were registered owing to the presence of phosphatic outcrops in the study region. The uranium migration trends and its remobilization were analyzed through the analysis of the behavior of eU, eTh, and their ratio. A positive relationship between eU and eU/eTh, and a negative relationship between eTh and eU/eTh in geological formations of different ages supports the secondary remobilization of uranium. The role of groundwater movement in transportation and redeposition of uranium mineralization is discussed: deep waters are less oxidizing than near-surface waters, and do not appear to have significantly remobilized uranium. This indicates that the source of secondary uranium mineralization is surficial or near surficial, and is mainly related to the leaching of outcropping phosphatic layers.Integration of the results with established radioactive and geological sections reveals four radioactive anomalous zones: north Froqlos, Kherbet Hannora, northwestern flanks of Jabal Abou Rabah (Kherbet Al-Hajar), and the northwestern limit of the Ghuntor depression. The high uranium concentration in north Froqlos is because of its original presence in the phosphate beds and extensive fracturing, which allows groundwaters to penetrate and remobilize the uranium. High uranium concentrations in the other three locations are caused by the presence of evaporites and capillary action, which draws solutions upwards and causes redeposition as surface crusts (gypcrete)."

"Lake Shore Gold is engaged in commercial gold production at both the Timmins West and Bell Creek mines, located in Timmins, Ontario. Run of mine ore is processed at the Bell Creek mill which consists of a conventional gold mill flow sheet involving crushing, grinding, gravity concentration and carbon-in-leach (CIL) for gold recovery. Since 2009, the operating capacity of the mill has been upgraded from 2000 tpd tonnes per day (tpd) to over 3,000 tpd. The most recent expansion involved the installation of a low aspect ratio SAG mill to replace the secondary crusher. Without operational data on the low aspect mill, combined with a site team that was new to SAG milling, there were many challenges in achieving the target throughput from the circuit. Through the implementation of AwaRE advanced controllers, running in closed loop with PRC fragmentation cameras as well as embedded PARC modules within the Allen Bradley PLC, the site was able to rapidly develop a best operating practise and has been successful in creating a stable and consistent operational environment. Phase 1 of the expansion was completed at the end of 2012 and involved enhancements and capacity addition to the leaching and adsorption circuits, which increased the mill’s capacity to 2,500 tpd. Phase 2 of the expansion commenced at the end of July 2013 and involved the expansion of the crushing and grinding circuits. The expanded front-end of the mill now has a capacity of 5,500 tpd, and processes ore from both Bell Creek and Timmins West mines. The updated flow-sheet, as shown in Figure 1, illustrates the replacement of the two-stage crushing and ball milling circuit with a single stage crusher and a low aspect ratio SAG mill."

THE metallurgical industry has purchased more than sixty per cent of the industrial gas cleaning equipment installed in Canada. This includes cyclonic collectors, scrubbers, cloth filters and Cottrell Precipitators. These are the principal types of equipment which are used commercially for the cleaning of gases which result from the processing of iron, nickel, copper, lead, zinc, gold, gypsum and aluminum ores. The recovered dust, which usually contains metal values, is returned to the process. The cost of the equipment is thus economically justified. This is in contrast to other industries, such as those involving steam power generation, asbestos, cement and lime production, where, though dust collection equipment is extensively used, it is installed primarily for nuisance abatement. Communities are becoming more and more conscious of air pollution, new and more stringent legislation is being enacted, and, for other than economic reasons the smelting industry will eventually be required to install more efficient gas cleaning equipment. "Traditional comminution tests are a vital component in every mine plant design. Comminution behavior governs both the cost of equipment and its operating efficiency. Most comminution tests are conducted off site on a limited number of samples, owing to the high costs and long lead times involved. Therefore a strong incentive exists to find alternative means for efficiently characterizing comminution behavior for a truly representative suite of samples. The potential for inferring comminution behavior from drill core is investigated in this paper. Our approach involves development of small scale comminution tests on the one hand, and measurement of a wide range of core attributes on the other. Our focus is the relationship between petrophysical properties and comminution behavior.Petrophysical properties of archival diamond drill core from the Ernest Henry Mine (Queensland, Australia) have been measured using a Geotek multi-sensor petrophysical core logger. We have investigated the relationship between the petrophysical properties and the corresponding small scale A*b and estimated Bond mill work index test results for 2m composites of the core. Core samples were petrophysically classified by means of cluster analysis. Comminution behaviour was then modeled for each cluster via multiple regression. The results suggest that prediction of the comminution behavior on the basis of petrophysics is viable at Ernest Henry.INTRODUCTIONMineral processing is the most important downstream operation for mining engineers and metallurgists since most mined materials are subjected to some type of comminution or beneficiation operation (SME, 1992). Comminution or size reduction is typically the first stage of processing. Size reduction steps (crushing and grinding) in any plant consume large amounts of energy, normally more than 50% of total energy (Weiss, 1985). Therefore, it is desirable to obtain laboratory results to design the size reduction equipment appropriately. One of the main factors that control the selection of hard-rock crushing equipment and the design of a crushing circuit is the mechanical character of the ore(s). Work index, density, abrasivity, compressive strength and clay content are essential parameters for ore characterisation (SME, 1992)."

The Japanese government enforced the "Small Domestic Appliances (SDAs) Recycling Law" in 2013. The law targets metals such as Ta, Nd, Dy, Co, and W to be recycled. Considerable amounts of these minor rare metals are mounted on printed circuit boards (PCBs) of the SDAs and/or e-scrap (electric and electronic scraps). Although precious metals and copper can be recovered from the e-scrap in non-ferrous metals smelters, most of the minor rare metals report to the slag in these smelters in non-recoverable forms. These metals are often used in particular types of devices, and therefore it is possible to concentrate them by separating such devices before feeding to the smelters. In previous work we developed technology for "Device Separation" to concentrate several minor rare metals, but some problems remained, such as how to remove the PCBs from e-scrap bodies, and how to detach devices from PCBs after their removal from escrap bodies. This paper proposes a two-stage crushing process in which, firstly, PCBs are removed from the e-scrap body with various crushers, and secondly, devices are detached from the PCBs involving the application of elevated temperatures. It was found that in the first stage, crushers with physically flexible rotating media such as chains, which provide high collision probability with the sample and consume relatively low energy, can quite effectively separate the PCBs from the e-scrap bodies non-destructively. In the second stage, heating was found to be remarkably effective in helping to detach mounted devices from PCBs, also non-destructively. This paper will also discuss the detailed mechanism of the heating effect on the detachment of devices from PCBs.

"The self-heating of sulphides can be a major hazard in mining operations and concentrate handling, particularly during transportation and associated storage. Self-heating results from the oxidation of sulphide minerals and can vary from being insignificant to highly reactive and potentially hazardous to both humans and infrastructure. It is essential that there be a reliable test methodology that can measure and categorize a given sulphide material as to its self-heating potential. By their nature, sulphide ores and concentrates are complex and variable mineral mixtures making it difficult to predict their self-heating behaviour a-priori based on mineralogy or with a simple “snapshot” test. Furthermore, self-heating behaviour will depend on the state of oxidation of the sulphides as well as time, temperature and humidity. A review of available testing apparatuses and protocols that can be used to assess self-heating potential is presented. Each of these methodologies was examined in relation to its ability to measure and reliably predict the latent self-heating hazard of a sulphide material. Several of the methods were tested and compared to illustrate their strengths and weakness. The results indicated that a number of the test protocols may produce false negative indications of self-heating potential, constituting an obvious concern to the industry.INTRODUCTION Sulphides as well as other materials (coal, wood chips, hay, powdered milk, to name a few) that are stockpiled in an air atmosphere may undergo oxidation reactions which can result in the evolution of heat (Beever, 1984) (Hudak, 2002) (Blanchard, 2007). If the rate of heat generated exceeds the rate of heat dissipation, the stockpile temperature will rise, potentially leading to “hot spots” in the most reactive areas, and possibly even fires. The heat generation rate, the “self-heating” rate, depends on many factors such as the type and composition of material, particle size, moisture content, oxygen availability, ambient temperature and humidity, and of prime importance, the extend of prior oxidation, or more specifically, the presence of oxidation products. The desire of operators that mine, process or transport sulphide-bearing materials with a potential for self-heating is to have an accepted and reliable method for evaluating and quantifying the potential hazard of their material. The challenges are how to best measure the self-heating properties of given samples, and based on results, predict the behaviour of the bulk material over time and in-situ. Generally, when evaluating a given material one derives the self-heating characteristics of that sample at the time and under the conditions of testing, which will be referred to as a “snapshot test”. If that material is invariable, i.e. it will not change its response over time, then it may be considered to be a “predictive test”. However, if as a result of continuing oxidation or other changes, the material becomes more or less reactive with time, then a “snapshot test” is unreliable with respect to predictive ability."

Lumwana is an open pit Copper mine located in the Northwestern Province of Zambia approximately 80 km west from the provincial capital of Solwezi, approximately 300 km northwest from the Copperbelt and 700 km northwest from the national capital of Lusaka. The mine has two major Copper deposits: Malundwe and Chimiwungo. Copper mineralization includes Chalcopyrite, Bornite and Chalcocite. In addition to Copper, these deposits also contain the undesirable element Uranium contained in vein hosted and disseminated Uranite. The processing plant was designed using conventional technologies: semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) and ball mill for grinding, and mechanical cells for rougher and cleaner flotation. Soon after commissioning in early 2009, it was recognised that two stages of conventional cleaning were unable to produce plant final Copper concentrates with the desired Uranium grades. Studies have shown that a significant quantity of liberated and fine Uranium particles (up to 80-90%) is recovered with the concentrate by entrainment. Lumwana Operations sought the use of the Jameson Cell technology after observing successful implementation at other sites in rectifying similar issues. In late 2009, Jameson Cell pilot-plant test work was conducted at the site and this quickly led to the installation of a full-scale B5400/18 model into the existing cleaner circuit. Inclusion of the Jameson Cell resulted in the plant being able to effectively produce clean and saleable concentrate with Uranium contents consistently below acceptable levels. Initially designed to be used as a cleaner scalper cell at the head of the existing conventional cell circuit, subsequent operational issues with the existing recleaner cells forced reconfiguration of the cleaner circuit and reintroduced the Jameson Cell for the recleaning duty. This paper reports the Lumwana Operation from the first two years of operation where it struggled to produce a saleable concentrate with Uranium grades below 150 ppm, which is the maximum allowable limit set out in the smelting contracts, to steps taken in the subsequent years to implement a satisfactory solution. The plant can now consistently produce a clean Copper concentrate with Uranium grades well below 130 ppm and the overall improvements implemented at site have seen the overall plant recovery improve by 1.3%.

"In preparation for the milling of a new nickel and copper mine ore, Nickel Rim South, Xstrata’s Strathcona Mill is undertaking numerous process improvement projects. Within the grinding circuit, several projects are under development and an automated grinding control strategy, consistent with the operating objectives, was identified as a key requirement. The grinding strategy is to maximize the throughput (quantitative objective) while maintaining the cyclone overflow within specifications (qualitative objective).This paper describes the implementation of a robust grinding control strategy using the existing control system. The implemented controls maintain the cyclone overflow density at the desired target, while continually optimising the rod mill feed rate to allow maximum throughput. This approach has the added benefit of improving the stability of the rougher flotation circuit down stream of the grinding and improving energy efficiency of the rod and primary ball mills. This paper discusses the comparison of the before and after the implementation of results.INTRODUCTIONThe grinding process is a size reduction operation used in the mining industry to liberate the valuable minerals from the gangue. Grinding is one of the most important and expensive processes in a concentrator (Xi-song, 2007; Pomerleau 2000; Najim 1995), often accounting for around half of the total operating costs in base metal concentrators (Wills, 1990), which has led to a focus on development and implementation of control and optimisation strategies. The grinding process prepares the ore for the subsequent concentration step, which for sulphide base metal operations, is predominantly flotation. The performance of the concentration (flotation) is very much determined by the feed characteristics of the slurry coming from grinding. The valuable minerals recovery process in flotation is very much influenced by the grinding process and the liberation of the desired minerals from the gangue minerals (McIvor, 1991).The true objective of grinding is to obtain a proper liberation of the minerals as defined by a particle size distribution referenced typically by d80 (80% passing size of product). Besides achieving the desired mineral d80 size, it is clearly desirable to produce as narrow a size distribution as possible to squeeze the maximum amount of the mineral value into the highest recovery region (McIvor, 1991). This is an important criterion for the mill in economically optimizing the grade and recovery for the concentrate product. It is important not to over or under grind, while keeping the specific comminution energy as low as possible (Nunez, 2005) to achieve the target liberation. In other words, maintain an optimal throughput depending on the ore conditions to the capacity of the grinding mills, while providing the flotation process with a constant and narrow size distribution, at a cut size selected to meet the metallurgical requirements (Bascur, 1991)."

"Since about 2002 there has been significant capital cost escalation, not inflation, in the mining industry causing turmoil for successful project completion. Project capital costs have more than doubled and some cases tripled in this time period. This has rendered many projects to be economically challenged and in some cases not viable. In addition higher than expected operating costs have further adversely affected project metrics such as NPV and IRR. Capital cost increases for projects have been widely reported globally. This current paper reviews three items. Firstly, why such capital increases and the various components that make up capital estimates. Secondly, it looks at reasons why preliminary estimates, for example at scoping and pre-feasibility level, have been lower than the ultimate constructed costs. Such increases and differences in estimates have caused major problems for mine builders and have led to a general nervousness on the part of those providing project finance. Thirdly, what discipline is needed in project execution in an attempt to mitigate such capital increases. The paper will hopefully give a better understanding of the various issues and factors involved for those in the mining industry.INTRODUCTION The years 2012 and 2013 were a turbulent time for the mining industry. The European economic crisis, politics, metal price volatility and a wave of changes of CEO´s in some of the major mining companies all contributed to a challenging couple of years. Two issues stood out. First, the huge increases reported in the capital costs of projects, where increases of 100% - 300% were not uncommon and in some cases exceeded that during the first decade of the 21st century. Second, company write downs related to takeovers during the boom and the stabilization/correction in commodity prices. These have led to great uncertainty, made it difficult (or impossible) to raise project financing costs, contributed to the changes at CEO level and placed many projects either on hold or cancelled altogether. It is commonplace now to read of companies talking of reduced capital expenditure and making a complete review of their projects and operations to contain costs."

This work investigates the effect of waste plastics addition on the reduction of iron oxide by sawdust. Composite pellets of iron oxide containing sawdust (SD), high density polyethylene (HDPE) and blends of SD/HDPE were fired under argon in a horizontal tube furnace at temperatures between 1300 and 1500 °C. Reduced samples were weighed after 10 minutes of reduction and the extent of reduction was calculated from the measured oxygen contents of the compact. The results showed improved extent of reduction when SD was blended with HDPE. The highest extent of reduction was achieved at SD:HDPE ratio of 2:3.

"Conventional base metal milling practice normally consists of crushing, grinding and cyclone classification followed by flotation. It is the authors' belief that the commencement of flotation after cyclone classification leads to inferior metallurgical results and that implementation of flotation of grinding mill discharges can result in increased recovery due to reduced overgrinding, reduced activation of contaminating minerals and improved dewatering circuit results due to the production of coarser concentrates.The concept of recovering minerals from the discharge of grinding mills is not new! Gold concentrators have utilized jigs and flotation cells while iron ore plants have employed magnetic separators to recover gold and magnetite respectively from the discharge of grinding mills. More recently, a Reichert cone has been used to recover sulphide and oxide base metal minerals from screened rod mill discharge. 1To the authors' knowledge, the first application of flotation of base metal minerals from the discharge of a production plant grinding mill was at the Lake Dufault concentrator of Corpor'1tion Falcon bridge Copper. Located 10 miles north of Noranda, Quebec the Lake Dufault concentrator commenced operations in August, 1964.The installation of flot11tion cells in the Lake Dufault grinding circuit proved so successful that an identical system was installed in the Manibridge concentrator of Falconbridge Nickel Mines Limited. "To date, several studies have been performed on the static mechanical properties of SLM-AlSi10Mg alloy. There have also been more recent studies on the relation between scan strategy, texture, and mechanical properties of SLM metals and composites. However, there is a huge knowledge gap in the available literature regarding texture and mechanical behavior of SLM-AlSi10Mg alloy under high strain rates. Therefore, in this study, dynamic mechanical behavior of AlSi10Mg_200C alloy manufactured by DMLS technique was investigated at high strain rates ranging from 900/s to 1700/s using Split Hopkinson Pressure Bar. Texture using X-ray diffraction technique of the initial samples were measured. The yield strength, peak flow stress, and ductility increased in all samples with increase of strain rate. TEM studies have also revealed evidence of continuous dynamic recrystallization in grains after 900/s–1700/s strain-rate tests. A Taylor polycrystal crystal plasticity constitutive model was then developed to capture and predict the texture evolution and mechanical response under dynamic loading, using plastic work as a critical parameter for the onset of recrystallization.INTRODUCTION Additive manufacturing (AM) powder techniques are among the fastest advancing breakthroughs in manufacturing in recent years, defined by a bottom-up layer by layer process of joining with energy input from lasers or electron beam (Herzog et al., 2016; Gibson et al., 2015). Among alloys fabricated by SLM, AlSi10Mg is of high interest to industry and academia due to its low density, high specific strength and excellent corrosion resistance, making this alloy a viable contender for aerospace, automotive, and marine applications. Circumstances such as car crash or bird aircraft strike hazards subject potential additively manufactured AlSi10Mg parts to impact loadings. This drives an interest in understanding and predicting dynamic behaviour of these alloys. AlSi10Mg is the AM counterpart of A360 die-cast aluminum, which possess hypoeutectic microstructure (Li et al., 2015). Up to the present time, many studies have presented the mechanical properties of SLM-AlSi10Mg alloy. The mechanical properties and microstructure of AlSi10Mg produced by selective laser melting (SLM) or DMLS techniques can be controlled using different parameters, such as feedstock powder (Asgari et al., 2017), and process parameters (Olakanmi et al., 2015). The microstructure and mechanical properties of AlSi10Mg can also be controlled using post heat treatment after SLM process Li et al., 2016). The mechanical properties of SLM-AlSi10Mg are sensitive to strain rate and can both change under quasi-static (Rosenthal et al., 2017) and high strain rates (Asgari et al., 2018). However, a significant knowledge gap in available literature regarding modeling these behaviours, and especially micromechanical modeling of dynamic behaviour."

Portland cement is primarily used to solidify backfill in underground mine workings and it represents a major cost in mining operations. CANMET-MMSL has invented an alternative binder technology that does not contain any amount of Portland cement and is made using waste materials, such as development rock and smelter slag. The technology has been successfully tested with many types of base metal and ferrous slag. Research conducted in collaboration with several mining operations in Canada has shown that the CANMET-MMSL binder has considerable potential as a replacement for Portland cement in mine backfill. An integral part of the overall mining operation, backfill is used for two main purposes: safety and environmental remediation. Depending on the mining method used, backfill provides a working surface, stabilizes stope and pillar walls, as well as the surrounding rock mass, and controls caving of stope backs. There are several benefits associated with the replacement of Portland cement in backfill, including reductions in (i) the footprint by placement of slag waste underground, (ii) the environmental effects and long term liability resulting from disposal and containment of slag waste on surface such as acid rock drainage, (iii) GHG as a result of reduced Portland cement usage (the production of 1 ton of Portland cement produces 1 ton of GHG), and (iv) the significant costs associated with reduced Portland cement usage.

Raising capital by issuing debt or equity is necessary in almost every corporation. In the field of corporate finance, the raising of capital is a heavily-studied topic. However, some of what is studied on this topic in corporate finance is not applicable in the mining industry. There are also many financing options that were created for the mining industry such as flow-through shares, prepaid forwards, and royalty sales. The cyclical nature of the industry makes the risk-return profile of financings more difficult to estimate than in other industries. Additionally, the methods used to assess firm value are different than other industries, as the values of orebodies are not included on balance sheets. For precious metals companies, which are a hedge against most other securities, there are additional complications with determining investor expectations and cost of equity. This thesis puts forth a decision-making framework to explain mine financing choices from the perspective of mining companies. The approach is threefold. First, all of the major equity and debt financing instruments available to mining companies are presented and analyzed. Each financing method is assessed on a wide range of criteria. Next, these concepts are applied in case studies of four companies: BHP Billiton, Barrick Gold, Teck Resources, and Noront Resources. For each company, the overall choice of financing methods is shown and analyzed. The effect of financing choices on the weighted average cost of capital (WACC) is calculated. The final section deals with case studies of individual mine finance decisions during the past two years.

Analytical predictions of the rate and magnitude of settlement of deposited oil sands tailings slurries generally overestimate how fast pore pressures will dissipate. Field deposits of nonsegregating tailings to mature fine tailings show continued high pore pressures near the surface which impede surface reclamation. In geotechnical analyses which predict the consolidation behavior of soft soils a finite strain theory is used. Effective stress-void ratio and void ratio-hydraulic conductivity relationships determined from laboratory large strain consolidation tests, are used in the finite strain predictions. This theory, however, cannot predict the full range of sedimentation, consolidation and pore pressure dissipation which occurs in large scale deposits of thixotropic tailings slurries. A new large strain consolidation model which assumes that the creep rate of the slurry exceeds the pore pressure dissipation rate is being investigated. This model is relevant for rapidly deposited, low permeability thixotropic slurries where the upwards drainage path increases by several meters a year, such as, in oil sand fine tailings ponds and nonsegregating tailings deposits. The model will be verified by analyzing the 10m high column of fine tailings at the University of Alberta which has been monitored for over 20 years and in which the excess pore pressures are still very high.

"EVTAC, an iron ore mine in Minnesota, had trouble meeting the customer’s pellet silica requirements. In addition, the mine plan was moving towards a lower grade ore and funding was not available for plant improvements to compensate for the change in ore or improving quality. Small changes to optimize various processing equipment resulted in significant improvements in both quality and productivity; for example, productivity on one mill line increased by 10% while producing lower silica concentrate. This paper will provide the methodology that allowed EVTAC to improve quality and productivity through process optimization with little capital investment.INTRODUCTION EVTAC, an iron ore mine in Minnesota, had trouble meeting the customer pellet silica requirements. In addition, the short-term mine plan was changing to a lower ore grade. Because of limited funds, EVTAC did not have the capital for investing in the plant to compensate for the ore change or to make improvements to lower product silica levels. Small changes to optimize process equipment resulted in significant improvements in quality and productivity; for example, one mill line feed rates increased by 10% while also producing a higher quality concentrate. These changes were sufficient enough to allow the mine to lower the target ore grade beyond their initial goal. At one time, a $3M flotation facility was considered as a way to meet quality with the new ore grade. However, the process changes were able to accomplish the same silica reduction with roughly a $50,000 investment in VFDs for sump controls. This paper will discuss some of the modifications that allowed EVTAC to meet the quality and production objectives with little capital investment. It also discusses the methodology used to make these process improvements."
