Abstract- An application of logistic regression to mapping of gold potential in the Baguio district of the Philippines is described. Categorical map data such as lithologic units and proximity classes of curvi-linear features, based on spatial association analyses, are quantified systematically and used as independent variables in logistic regression to predict the probability for presence or absence of gold mineralization. Regression experiments to compare between using all independent variables that are associated spatially with the response variable and using only statistically significant independent variables are performed. The results of the regression experiments are similar; however, the use of all independent variables produces slightly optimistic results but better prediction rates for the known gold deposits in the test district. At least 68% of the ‘model’ large-scale gold deposits and at least 76% of the ‘validation’ small-scale gold deposits were predicted correctly. The predicted geologically favorable zones are also similar to delineated geochemically anomalous zones. The technique presented using logistic regression as a data integration tool is effective for geologically constrained technique of mapping mineral potential.

Abstract - Cu-Ni-PGE footwall ore deposits were studied in the McCreedy East and Whistle mines along the North Range, and the Lindsley and Little Stobie mines along the South Range of the Sudbury Igneous Complex. The footwall ores in these localities differ from typical magmatic Fe-Ni-Cu- PGE deposits in the Sudbury mining camp: they have higher Cu/Ni ratios, higher PGE content, veinlike appearance and ubiquitous association of ore with hydrous silicates. Results of comparative fluid inclusion petrography and microthermometry of footwall ores indicate that high temperatures (300°C to 480°C) and heavy-metal rich saline (up to about 40 NaCl equivalent wt% salinity) fluids were associated with the formation of the PGE-rich footwall ores at moderately high pressures (around 2 kbars). However, several, possibly independent fluid circulation stages were also found at the different localities and there also are differences in detailed characteristics for ore-forming fluids especially comparing data from the North Range and the South Range. Thus, in addition to the high temperature and salinity of fluids, there are local variations in the nature of hydrothermal processes. These differences may be related to the diverse origin of fluids (magmatic, metamorphic, and formational brines) and their differing extents of interaction with the compositionally different footwall lithologies.

La découverte de nouveaux gisements métallifères constitue le point de départ du développement de l'industrie minérale. Or, au cours de ces dernières années, le nombre de ces découvertes a fortement diminué dans les territoires classiquement explorés, entraînant une recrudescence de l?exploration dans les terrains géologiques de grade métamorphique élevé (e.g., Province de Grenville, Grand Nord du Québec). Ces derniers ont été traditionnellement considérés comme stériles à cause (i) de la monotonie apparente des gneiss qui les composent, (ii) de la difficulté d?identifier leurs protolites, (iii) des changements importants dans l?apparence des gîtes recherchés reliés au fort degré de déformation et de métamorphisme et (iv) des théories qui prônent un lessivage important des cations et des métaux d?intérêt économique par les processus de déshydratation des roches lors du métamorphisme régional (Weaver et Tarney, 1985; Vokes, 2000). Cependant, l?avancée des connaissances dans la compréhension des gîtes métallifères et de leurs terrains hôtes gneissiques intensément métamorphisés, montre que les systèmes géochimiques des roches altérées demeurent robustes (p. ex. ; Trägårdh, 1991; Craig et Vokes, 1993; Geringer et al., 1994; Schandl et al., 1995; Zaleski et Peterson, 1995; Vokes, 2000; Blein et al., 2003, sous presse). Bien sûr, les sulfures peuvent être localement remobilisés et même fondre, mais cette remobilisation n?implique pas forcément la disparition du gîte hôte (Williams, 1990) et peut s?avérer, bien au contraire, bénéfique pour la rentabilité d?un gîte en augmentant sa teneur en minerais (Marshall et al., 2000). Jusqu?à présent, dans les terrains métamorphiques, les contextes sédimentaires et plutoniques ont été reconnus et respectivement explorés pour les gîtes de type SEDEX et les gîtes magmatiques de Ni-Cu. L?étude de gîtes de métaux de base et précieux intensément métamorphisés (faciès des granulites) et leur comparaison avec des gîtes équivalents peu on non métamorphisés a permis d?établir, au cours des dernières décennies, des outils pour l?exploration des terrains de haut-grade métamorphique (Vokes, 1991, 2000; Slack et al., 1993; Spry et al., 2000). Ces outils sont basés sur la reconnaissance de roches diagnostiques d?une circulation ou d?une exhalation de fluides hydrothermaux telles que les méta-exhalites (formation de fer, coticules, tourmalinites, roches riches en quartz-gahnite, en apatite, en barite ou en staurolite zincifère) (Spry, 2000; Spry et al., 2000). Ils sont utilisés constamment dans les ceintures supracrustales riches en roches métasédimentaires.

The control of feed delivery quality to the flash furnace remains an unsolved problem. Many operations around the world still have limited control of feed quality to their flash furnace. Schenck Process and WorleyParsons continue to work towards the ‘holy grail’ of simple quality feed delivering both radial feed distribution and pulseless feed delivery. Ten years ago they joined forces to offer a system based on then Clyde Process RotoFeed system which could deliver ground level installation, online mixing of materials, pulseless feeding direct to the burner, with good radial distribution. Unfortunately, this proved to be too large a step for the Flash Smelting community and met with resistance from the process owners. Since then the community has developed a range of options some of which have been implemented over this period. Despite these improvements there are still areas of concern including safety issues associated with concentrate leaks and spills, uncontrolled variations in feed rate including massive flooding events, intermittent distribution improvement and set up of the burner continues to be trial and error and hard to repeat the success in each burner campaign. These continue to impact flash furnace performance globally on a daily basis. Following the community reticence to pursue the complete solution a number of interim steps are now available to pave the way to the ultimate feed system. The mixing of material has been installed and is delivering line blended materials on a daily basis. This paper will investigate the developments over the last 10 years and discuss the pros and cons of this incremental step process for overall furnace control. INTRODUCTION Schenck Process and WorleyParsons have continued to interact and observe changes in the flash smelting industry and to consider application of the Clyde RotoFeed now incorporated in the Schenck Process ProStreamTM range for delivery of feed directly to the concentrate or matte burner. Schenck Process pneumatic injection from the Clyde Process range, ProStreamTM, utilises two types of volumetric feeders to accurately control the feed of material into an injection pipeline. These are referred to as the RotoFeed and RotoScrew technologies and the choice of feeder type is dependent on the characteristics of the material to be handled. The RotoFeed is generally used for finer, granular and powdered materials which cannot be accurately handled with a screw such as pulverised coal and copper concentrate, whilst the RotoScrew is particularly suited to coarser lump materials, particularly abrasive of cohesive materials like zinc powder, electronic scrap and metal ashes. Both units can operate at high pressures and many systems work at 3 to 10 bar with the occasional system working at 20 or 30bar for carbon to gasifiers. For the Flash furnace the ProStreamTM units can be used to deliver each of the furnace feed materials into a single line, mixing the materials homogeneously and live to the burner.

"In December 1991, the GRAHM (Groupe de Recherche sur Jes Applications de L'informatique a L'industrie Minerale), of Laval University started a KBAC (Knowledge Based Automatic Control) grinding project with Falconbridge Ltd. The project was shifted to the Kidd Creek concentrator in the summer of 1992, with the first phase involving the collection of data by GRAHM and Falconbridge personnel for the construction and tuning of a dynamic simulator. This grinding circuit dynamic simulator known as DYNAFRAG was used to assess various control strategies, with a PID-based strategy being selected for ease of installation on a Foxboro II A DCS.The ""B"" primary grinding circuit was chosen for the initial strategy development, which is one of three parallel divisions. The KBAC project was successfully completed in November 1994, with subsequent modifications being implemented by Kidd Creek staff.This paper summarizes, the current control strategy, the project costs, and the realized benefits. Some of the problems which were encountered with the initial installation, and the subsequent modifications are also dealt with in this paper.2.0 IntroductionIn the summer of 1992, the GRAHM of Laval University and Falconbridge Ltd. started a project to design a control strategy for the ""B"" grinding circuit at the Kidd Creek Division. Between 1992 and 1994 several papers have been written to describe the control objectives, the methodology followed, and some initial results (Flament, 1994A, 1994B). Since then, however, the control objectives changed, and several improvements were made to the circuit. In particular, maximizing tonnage was no longer a priority, a variable speed drive pump was installed on the cyclone feed, the ball mill power was lowered, and the geometry of the cyclones changed. As a consequence, the control strategy was revised. Table 1 summarizes the historical developments on the ""B"" division grinding control."

"Most underground diesel equipment is equipped with diesel oxidization catalysts (DOCs) to reduce carbon monoxide and hydrocarbon emissions. DOCs do not alter nitrogen oxides concentrations but can promote the oxidization of nitric oxide (NO) to the more toxic nitrogen dioxide (NO2). Vale and CanmetMINING have been researching how to reduce worker exposure to diesel emissions by testing mining equipment DOCs. Results indicate a > 77% decrease in carbon monoxide concentration but a 46–315% increase in NO2 concentration for 8-mode test cycles. It is recommended that DOCs that increase NO2 emissions be evaluated regarding their continued use in underground operations.RÉSUMÉ La plupart des équipements miniers souterrains sont équipés de catalyseurs d’oxydation diesel (DOC) afin de réduire les émissions de monoxyde de carbone et d’hydrocarbures. Les DOC ne modifient pas les concentrations des oxydes d’azote mais ils peuvent faciliter l’oxydation du monoxide d’azote (NO) en dioxyde d’azote (NO2), plus toxique. Vale et CanmetMINING effectuent des recherches pour réduire l’exposition des travailleurs aux émissions de diesel en analysant les DOC des équipements miniers. Selon les résultats, une diminution > 77 % dans la concentration de monoxyde de carbone est atteinte mais elle est accompagnée d’une augmentation de 46 à 315 % de la concentration en NO2 pour des cycles d’essais à 8 modes. "Abstract - Where block (selective mining unit) grade distributions can be determined, the effect of average random errors of block grade estimates on metal recovery can be evaluated quantitatively. That is, for a given estimation error and cutoff grade, it is possible to calculate the quantity of metal that is lost as a result of misclassifying ore blocks as waste, as well as the dilution that ensues from misclassifying waste blocks as ore. Example calculations using a computer program GAINLOSS and realistic block grade distribution parameters for both a porphyry-type deposit and an epithermal gold deposit illustrate some fundamental relations that are important in quality control of estimation and in reconciliations concerning a comparison of ore estimates with production.Where the cutoff grade is on the lower tail of the grade distribution, metal arising from dilution can be much less than metal lost through misclassifying ore as waste. Hence, average grade of milled material could possibly be higher than expected (estimated) and tonnes milled will be smaller than estimated.Where the cutoff grade is on the higher tail of the grade distribution, tonnes arising from dilution will be greater than tonnes lost by misclassifying ore as waste. Thus, tonnage mined will be greater than estimated and the average grade milled will be less than estimated.The software GAINLOSS permits rapid comparison of the tonnes and average grade for all blocks selected as ore for a variety of levels of block estimation errors. These comparisons can be incorporated in a financial analysis to evaluate whether or not it is worthwhile to improve a high, average block estimation error to some lower value."

Abstract-Ghana, a major West African gold-producing country, took a crucial step in 1986 to allow private participation in mining ventures that had hitherto been state controlled and starved of funds. This decision has led to a three-fold rise in gold production with substantial local and foreign capital once again flowing into exploration and mining projects. Though the rise in gold export is due primarily to increased production from large mines such as Ashanti Goldfields Corporation, Billiton Bogosu Gold, Tebrebie Goldfields and Ghana Australia Gold that work primary lode gold deposits on quartz veins and Banket conglomerates, a fair amount of gold comes from placer gold mining from which two new mines have been developed at Kwabeng and Bonte during the current gold boom. Also, placer gold mining is important locally because the lower capital outlay required for its development enables many entrepreneurs to operate small concessions and provide employment for a large pool of unskilled labor. Placer gold exploration and development in Ghana is labor-intensive. Pitting is the most used method although few employ the mechanized ("Banka") drilling. The advantages and disadvantages of the two approaches in the local setting are discussed. The gravel is normally sluiced and the gold recovered by amalgamation. The drawbacks to successful placer gold exploration in Ghana have been attributed to lapses in execution of exploration programs (Dzigbodi- Adjimah and Arhin, 1993; Dzigbodi-Adjimah and Gawu, 1994). However, the failure to recognize and set time frameworks and financial limitations for the various stages of placer gold exploration have spelt the doom of some projects. It is critical that the characteristics of the placer gold deposit be determined by efficient and cost effective means. A planned exploration supported by adequate flow of funds saves costs and leads to success. This article discusses the current Ghanaian situation and presents proposals from case studies for planning and budgeting placer gold exploration programs for use in similar settings.

"Mr. Chairman and fellow CMP members, most of these remarks will be made with particular reference to copper concentrate but the basics apply generally to other metal concentrates as well.For very good reasons, using copper as an example, smelting capacity usually is located either close to mine production or close to areas of high copper consumption. The mine producer can add on smelting capacity to insure that the copper in his concentrate can be processed into a marketable form under more or less controlled conditions including costs. On the other hand, the consumer wishing to assure a better supply of copper likewise can build smelting capacity and offer treatment charges attractive enough to discourage mines from investing in their own facilities. In this regard, freight is an important factor. Bulk shipments from the heart of Africa with a large overland component are uneconomic whereas concentrate movements from Australia or South America compare favourably with smaller metal shipments.A mine project which incorporates smelting capacity, will often, through the presence of this capacity, encourage active exploration and development of additional concentrate production in the vicinity. The usual result is that new mines within reasonable distance of the smelter will be able to avoid the capital required to build their own smelting and refining facilities and that the existing facilities will expand to appreciate economies of scale."

Positron Emission Tomography (PET) is a medical technique that produces three dimensional images of the body, commonly to aid diagnosis and treatment of tumours. PET has been developed by the University of Birmingham in order to track particles in an opaque system which is known as Positron Emission Particle Tracking (PEPT). The object to be tracked is irradiated. As the radionuclide decays positrons are produced; when these collide with electrons a pair of concurrent parallel back-to-back gamma waves are emitted and detected, from which the position of the object can be calculated. Stirred media mills are used for particle size reduction. The mill is usually operated at high solids loading with grinding media and has a polyurethane or polyurethane-lined steel pot and is thus opaque. For this study grinding media has been directly irradiated and tracked using the PET camera during the grind. The stirred media mill can be divided into cells of equal volume known as voxels. The fraction of the total time the irradiated media spend in each voxel can be shown in an occupancy diagram. The mean velocity and kinetic energy of the media for each voxel are calculated and also plotted. In occupancy and kinetic energy plots colour indicates the value of the voxel, in dimensionless time and Joules respectively. The arrow in velocity plots shows direction and length of arrow indicates magnitude of the mean velocity for the voxel. From these diagrams and further data analysis a detailed understanding of the flow patterns, media behaviour and high energy areas of the mill can be developed. Variables considered were the tip speed of the impeller and density of the grinding media. It was found that the grinder has three distinct regions: above, at and below the impeller with each region having its own flow patterns and velocity and kinetic energy profiles. These are different for each variable and so are used to characterise the grind. Tip speed and density of the grinding media were shown to both affect the velocity of the media and the proportion of time spent in the each region of the grinder.

"The February 18, 1987, Federal Budget contains a proposed amendment which would simplify somewhat the ""successor corporation"" rules in the Income Tax Act. Despite this amendment, though, the important successor rules will continue to be relatively complex.IntroductionThe February 18, 1987, Federal Budget papers propose an income tax amendment whereby the so-called ""successor corporation"" rules would be revised by removing the present provision which limits the application of these rules to a maximum of two ""successions"". The successor corporation rules represent one of the most complicated sets of rules in the Income Tax Act. This month, Tax Notes seeks to explain these rules and the proposed amendment in simplified terms.Basically, the successor rules provide a mechanism for transferring unused exploration and development expenses from one taxpayer to another , in specified circumstances. The aforementioned limitation of two successions refers to the rule which allows a maximum of two such transfers with respect to any particular pool of deductions."

By dispersing gold in high surface area form supported on metal oxides, its inert character can be transformed to make economical, effective catalysts. Gold has already been demonstrated in a number of fuel cell applications such as gas phase catalysts, electro-catalysts, and electrical connectors. In this paper, the various types of fuel cell systems are reviewed, and several opportunities for gold identified. Low temperature fuel cells, including alkaline and solid polymer electrolyte types rely on high surface area platinum group metal catalysts which are highly susceptible to poisoning by low concentrations of carbon monoxide in the fuel supply. Hydrogen is frequently obtained by steam reforming hydrocarbons, followed by the water gas shift (WGS) reaction. A promising initial use for supported gold catalysts is in catalysing this WGS reaction. Research has shown that gold supported on iron oxide (Au/a-Fe2O3 ) WGS catalysts are more active than the current commercial copper oxide / zinc oxide catalysts, and effective at temperatures as low as 120oC. Products from reformer/ water gas shift reactors can be further purified by removing traces of carbon monoxide. If a small proportion of oxygen is introduced into the fuel gas stream, carbon monoxide can be preferentially oxidized to carbon dioxide even in the presence of hydrogen. Gold nanoparticle catalysts on iron oxide support (Au/a-Fe2O3 ) have exhibited higher activity than commercially available platinum on alumina (Pt/?- Al2O3 ) preferential oxidation catalysts. The low temperature of this reaction may make it feasible to incorporate these catalysts within the fuel cell itself. Proton exchange fuel cells provide several possible applications for catalytically active gold and its alloys. Carbon supported platinum group metals would benefit greatly from improved electrical conductivity if gold replaced some or all of the carbon support material. As electrode current densities are raised, electrical resistance constitutes an increasing proportion of voltage losses within the fuel cell. Dramatic reductions in cell stack voltage losses have already been demonstrated by reducing inter-cell contact resistance using gold plating. The low temperature oxidation properties of gold catalysts have been investigated in controlling gaseous emissions from direct methanol fuel cells, and gold also provides essential catalysis in building direct borohydride oxidation fuel cells. The prospect of a range of other applications for gold in fuel cells to contribute useful improvements in corrosion resistance and conductivity is assessed. Globally, fuel cells have been developed for a wide range of applications including stationary generators, cars and buses, industrial vehicles and small portable power supplies, each of which represents a substantial market. Hence there are likely to be many and varied opportunities for gold catalysts to contribute to the performance and economics of the systems being commercialized.

Dimpling as a means of flush countersinking rivets is an old process predominantly used in secondary structures. The introduction of GLARE as an aerospace material has renewed interest in dimpling and its possible application in primary structures. The dimpling process is able to prevent the creation of a machined knife-edge in the thin aluminum plies of the GLARE sheets. In addition, dimpling eliminates the need to use reduced height rivets, such as the NAS 1097 rivet style. This investigation expands on an earlier study into dimpling of GLARE by Rans and Straznicky. In order to tailor the dimpling process to GLARE, FEM simulations were developed. After verification, a study was performed to find the best parameters for dimpling GLARE3-2/l. Coupon fatigue tests were carried out and the dimpled joints demonstrated increased fatigue lives over the conventional machine countersunk joints. Future wide panel fatigue tests are planned to confirm the usefulness of dimpling thin GLARE laminates.

OZ Minerals owns and operates the Prominent Hill copper-gold concentrator in South Australia, built in 2008 and commissioned in early 2009. The concentrator operates via semi autogenous grinding in a thirty four foot ThyssenKrupp Polysius mill followed by a twenty four foot Polysius ball mill in closed circuit with hydro cyclones, designed for an ore throughput of eight million tonnes per annum. The main aspects of designing the circuit are discussed along with the issues faced in the early stages of operation. A review of the optimization strategy applied to the milling circuit such as cyclone optimization, advanced process control strategy implementation and reline management to improve availability is then discussed highlighting areas of significant process improvement that have seen the plant exceed nameplate throughputs above nine million tonnes per annum.

ABSTRACT: Drawing on past research experience with sprayable polymer mine support agents (TSLs), Spray On Plastics Ltd. has developed a TSL ground support system called RockWeb. Using a relatively new polyurea polymer technology, RockWeb has been engineered to solve problems encountered underground with polyurethane liners by incorporating rapid curing, moisture insensitivity and superior physical performance. RockWeb possesses a unique, patented ability to be sprayed in a ?cobweb? like consistency allowing the applicator to span fissures in the rock, ensuring no initial defects in the liner, and maintaining design thickness over highly irregular surfaces. This ability, coupled with the high strength and elasticity of polyurea, allows RockWeb to mitigate rock movement through yielding, while maintaining intimate surface confinement. RockWeb provides reduction in logistics through the transport of 1/25 of the material quantities required for shotcrete, rapid deployment rates of as little as 30 minutes per round, and immediate return to the work area. This paper will discuss the technology and advantages of RockWeb as well as opportunities for overall mining cycle cost reduction. The safety benefits, as well as health and environmental considerations regarding application of isocyanate-based liners will also be discussed.

Suite aux excellents résultats, obtenus avec la technologie des détonateurs électroniques dans des chantiers longs trous de grandes dimensions, nous avons décidé d?étendre cette technologie dans les ouvertures, dans le dynamitage de piliers et dans différents chantiers complexes. Cette technologie nous a permis d?effectuer l?abatage de chantiers avec un très grand nombre de trous sans détériorer le terrain. L?équation est bien simple avec les détonateurs électroniques, plus gros sont les dynamitages moins de fois les épontes se font ébranler, moins de blocs d?effondrement se retrouvent dans les points de soutirages entre les dynamitages et plus la fragmentation est meilleure. La flexibilité d?opération que nous avons obtenu avec les détonateurs électroniques est difficilement quantifiable, mais elle nous a permis de maintenir notre rythme de production mensuelle même avec certains chantiers complexes. Il est bien certain que l?utilisation des détonateurs conventionnels a encore sa place dans une mine conventionnelle comme Beaufor, mais l?utilisation des détonateurs électroniques a aussi sa place dans certaines situations spéciales. "Very little attention was given to the regulation of uranium mills by the Atomic Energy Control Board prior to 1974. The ore grade treated by Canadian mills in the past was in the order of 0.08 - 0.3% U and it was not difficult to keep the exposure of workers well below regulatory limits. Furthermore, uranium milling has also been substantially free of occupational illness because environmental control has been generally satisfactory (l).The discovery of higher grade ore bodies in Canada has resulted in higher radiation levels in one mill and this has partly contributed to a need for increased radiation monitoring in the mill. In addition, as greater insight is gained on the effects of radiation, the implementation of the ALARA principle is being stressed at all mills.The concept of ALARA was emphasized by the ICRP (International Committee for Radiological Protection) in 1977 and stands for '""as low as reasonably achievable'"". It is based on the premise that no proven threshold for potential effects of radiation exists and that the actual individual exposure should therefore be kept as far below the regulatory limit as possible, economic and social factors being taken into account."

The Úrkút rhodochrosite deposit and Branisko Mn showings (rancieite, manganiferous calcite), located in Lower Jurassic marine sedimentary rocks with black shale, were studied by organicgeochemical methods. Both depositional localities were affected by the Lower Jurassic Toarcian anoxic event. UrkUt shales are rich in organic matter (av. 2.94 wtOJo total organic carbon), the composition of which indicates derivation mainly from marine sources, with some terrigenous component. The shales matured in a bacterially active environment under reducing conditions of diagenesis-catagenesis. Branisko shales (~0.2 wt % TOC) with lenses of Mn oxide ore were weakly metamorphosed and their organic matter thermally degraded. The model for Mn carbonate ore formation envisages reaction of Mn derived from sediments, with carbonate generated by a bacterially mediated process of decomposition of organic matter that also involved Mn reduction.

"Quality management has a/ways played an important role at the Iron Ore Company of Canada; particularly since the early eighties when the iron ore markets favoured buyers as opposed to sellers.Since thot time, IOC's quality system has evolved from basic quality control to the Deming philosophy and its 14 points, and on through various other phases to the ISO 9000 series.ISO 9002 Registration was' first requested by IDC's customers and development plans were prepared in 1988. At this time, Quality System Registration was unheard of in the mining sector and TDC found itself struggling with the concept. The 1U!Xt three years saw the company develop a Quality System to meet ISO 9002 in a two phased approach, setting new standards for the mining industry when registration was achieved in December 1991.The company now sees ISO Registration as the cornerstone of its future quality efforts. IOC's quality system has been integrated with several other initiatives such as loss control and functional training, both of which focus on training and management the workforce to do the job safely, the right way.This paper addresses the steps required to develop a quality system for the mining industry within the guidelines of the ISO 9000 Series and the subsequent integration of other quality related initiatives."
