The U.S. Bureau of Mines has developed a prototype cross well acoustic logging system and complementary tomogr`aphic image reconstruction software for the detection and delineation of abandoned underground mines and associated subsidence failure in relatively shallow environments. The logging system uses a piezoelectric, cylindrical bender as an acoustic source. A triaxial accelerometer assembly, designed to be rigidly locked in the borehole, is the receiver portion of the logging system. Both the source and receiver probes operate at high frequencies, thus providing short wavelengths capable of resolving small features in most rock types. A modified van with a dual-drum wireline winch, 4-channel data acquisition system, power amplifiers, and waveform generator supports field operation of the logging system. A field study was conducted at a test site in San Antonio, Texas, to demonstrate the cross well acoustic logging system. The underlying rock at the test site is similar to stratified sediments in coal measures. First- arrival travel times were interpreted by tomographic reconstruction of the velocity field in the two-dimensional cross section between the source and receiver boreholes. The resulting image correlates well with geological borehole logging data for the test site.

West Wallsend No. 2 Colliery is a new mine that is presently being developed in the New- castle Coalfield by J. & A. Brown & Abermain Seaham Collieries Ltd., a subsidiary of Coal & Allied Industries Ltd. It is situated near Barnsley and is some 15 miles by rail from the port of Newcastle. The mine will produce coal from both Bore- hole and Young Wallsend seams. The Borehole seam has a working seam thickness varying from 7 ft to 5 ft while the Young Wallsend seam presents a choice of two distinct working thick- nesses, i.e. 5 ft. or 8 ft, the upper 3 ft containing much high ash material. The inter- seam interval varies from 10 ft on the western edge of the area to more than 70 ft in the central portion. The Borehole seam lies at a depth varying from 550 ft to 750 ft and the overlying surface terrain is gently undulating bushland with limited surface development.

The JORC Code lists the three core principles of Transparency, Materiality and Competency as fundamental to how mineral estimates are publicly reported. But where the principles of Transparency and Materiality can be considered conscious choices underlying decisions at the point of disclosure, Competency is a self-declared position statement based on one’s confidence to defend a technical position (as well as the functional pre-requisites of institute membership and a minimum of five years relevant experience).Developing competency in the mining industry is an ad hoc process, generally left to the individual to chart through a process of osmosis from personal work experiences that lead to a sufficient level of confidence. Companies that actually present professional development programs leading to reporting competency are rare. And even once a person has followed a program, there is no specific outline of what constitutes technical competence.No doubt, there are persons signing off on mineral statements who would benefit from developing and/or updating their technical skills (they may not even be aware of unmastered skills). Equally, there are technical practitioners who are sufficiently competent, but lack the confidence to step up and publicly report their estimates. Confidence in one’s own abilities plays a significant role in deciding when one is ready for the responsibility of submitting mineral estimates for public consumption. In addition, a person’s organisational support, such as the availability of suitable peers and professional development programs, and opportunities to learn from a variety of technical projects contribute to developing relevant experience. Increased exposure in both technical breadth and depth enhance confidence in one’s ability and competence.The mining industry provides numerous opportunities through direct and indirect means to develop the competency underpinning a stable reporting code. This paper examines a theoretical framework and associated processes that could be used to examine how the mining industry, companies and individuals collaborate to develop this vague principle of competency. This paper seeks to initiate research with the express purpose of enabling more effective and efficient development of reporting competency in our industry.

Re-opening of the old Proprietary mine has provided new exposures of the system of uralite dolerite dykes observed in 19110 by the Geological Sub-Committee of the Scientific Society of Broken Hill. The newly exposed dykes have been invaded and replaced by the massive ore, with development of manganese garnet and biotite adjacent to the sulphides. A similarly altered dyke in massive ore has been encountered in the North Broken Hill mine.The textures of the unaltered portions of these dykes indicate that they have not been affected by the intense regional metamorphism that has recrystallized the other rocks of the area. Moreover, in mineral composition and textures, in chemical composition, and in cross-cutting relations, they are so similar to the uralite dolerites of the district which post-date the folding and metamorphism of the Broken Hill area, that they must be regarded as typical members of this suite of post-metamorphic dykes.The invasion and replacement of the dykes by the massive sulphide ore, and their metasomatic alteration adjacent to the invading sulphides, establishes that the lode was formed after the dykes were intruded, so that the high temperature features of the ore cannot be attributed to metamorphism and recrystallization, but are primary features of high temperature hydrothermal deposition.INTRODUCTIONTwo cross dykes are recorded on the plan of the 300-ft. level of the Broken Hill lode accompanying the report on the geology of the Broken Hill lode published by the Geological Sub-Committee of the former Scientific Society of Broken Hill (1910). One dyke occurs in Block 12, and the other in Block 13, and both were stated to consist of a dark basic amphibole rock, called diorite for convenience. The Singapore Land Transport Authority (LTA) has been procuring the expansion of their underground mass rapid transit rail network at a prodigious rate since the first line opened in 1987. Four lines (149 km) are currently operating and several more lines are at various stages of planning/construction; one of these is the Downtown line stage 2 (DTL 2).DTL 2 contract C917 was awarded in September 2009 for S$320 M. On 18 June 2013 the original contractor became insolvent, leaving the works incomplete. Following a fast-tracked tender process, McConnell Dowell was awarded the S$254 M contract on 29 August 2013 to complete the works. This contract includes two underground stations constructed by cut-and-cover methods and twin bored tunnels between the stations. Each tunnel is 1400 m long, excavated by earth pressure balanced (EPB) tunnel boring machines (TBM) at an average depth of 20 m and segment lined to 5.8 m inner diameter. The tunnel alignment is located under a busy five-lane road lined with prime residential real estate and congested with utilities.To compound the difficulty the tunnels are located within the notorious Bukit Timah Granite formation. This has a very wide range of strength, from below 1 MPa to over 300 MPa. This strength range is a consequence of six weathering grades, from soil to fresh rock, with the fresh granite causing severe abrasion problems. The various grades can occur within a very short distance of each other. Consequently, the problem of supporting a mixed face exists, particularly in the intermediate weathering grades where intact rock is encountered in the invert and corestones within a loose soil matrix in the crown, which can increase the instability by allowing the ground to flow into the TBM.The focus of this paper will be the excavation of the bored tunnels by EPB TBM used by McConnell Dowell to complete these challenging works.CITATION:Jones, G and Shepherd, J, 2014. The arid and semi-arid region of Western Australia occupies about two-thirds of the State equivalent to an area of about 1.8 million sqkm. Groundwater demand in this area has historically been linked to the pastoral andmining industries commencing with the gold discoveries in the Eastern Goldfields some 100 years ago. Substantial increases in demand have occurred in the past two decades initially as a result of nickel discoveriesin the early 1970's and more recently the rapid resurgence of the gold mining industry. Mineral exploration and development in the Great Sandy Desert at Telfer (gold) and Kintyre (uranium) and in the Great Victoria Desert at MulgaRocks (uranium) has also been accompanied by detailed groundwater investigations.

In the traditional analysis of airblast and ground vibration, it is often assumed that only that single blasthole possessing the maximum charge weight (or a small group of blastholes initiating in an 8 ms time window) will determine the peak level of airblast or vibration. This assumption is examined in light of waveform superposition, and is found to be unsound. More rational alternatives are given in which all blastholes (or a selected number of blastholes) are assumed to contribute, in varying degrees, to the peak vibration or airblast. However, it is also shown that there is generally no precise solution for determining the number of blastholes that contribute to the peak level. The technique of waveform superposition does not rely on evaluating which group of holes produced the peak, and so is the preferred method for prediction. Some numerical and analytical models of wave superposition for airblast and vibration are also reviewed and recent approaches discussed. The directionality of airblast, in particular, is analysed in detail using a new superposition model that is constructed of two submodels, onenumerical, the other analytical. This model shows that the airblast from even a single blasthole can be highly directional. The detail of this model is commercially sensitive and will not be discussed. Only results and a broad discussion will be given.

Problems caused by water discharge from surface mine ventilation shafts can be significant and are usually unforseen. The discharged water is often hyper-saline or acidic and can cause environmental degradation over a wide radius. It can also lead to recurring power pole fires and primary fan breakdowns. A range of solutions to the water discharge problem has been implemented in many Australian mines. In most cases the solutions have been ad hoc, with the overall cost and effectiveness varying tremendously. This paper reviews and contrasts the practicality and effectiveness of the various available remedial options.

An alternative process for desorbing and recovering metals from activated carbon has been developed, and is the subject of several patent applications by Micron Research (W.A.) The system uses the principle of conditioning the carbon in a strong alkaline cyanide solution followed by distillation desorption in a fractionating column, using the carbon as the column packing and methanol as the desorbing agent. The system offers the following advantages : (a) The processes of desorption, methanol recovery and reactivation are all carried out in a single column with the carbon itself acting as the column packing. No other desorption plant items or fractional distillation equipment are required. (b) The metal values are concentrated into the water content of the carbon and no other water is used except as condenser coolant. This produces very high grade gold silver solutions which give high current efficiencies in the electrowinning step. These high gold concentrations allow almost complete separation of gold and silver from copper in the electrolytic cell. (c) The process is completed to a tailing assay of less than 200g Au/tonne carbon in 15 - 20 hours allowing turn around of carbon batches on a daily Basis.

The sizing of a starter dam for a Tailings Storage Facility (TSF) involves balancing many competing demands. It should cost as little as possible, be high enough to store tailings until the first raise can be constructed, it must be able to contain water safely, and it must be designed in such a way that the long-term integrity of the higher raises are not compromised, among other things. In addition to these demands there is the complication of the behaviour of the process plant, and the tailings during commissioning. Variations in slurry density, excess water in the TSF, initial settled density of the tailings, reliability issues, and beach slopes above and below water can all impact the way the tailings beaches are developed and ultimately impact the ability of the starter dyke to contain the required volume of tailings and water.The conventional approach to the design of a TSF starter dyke is to begin looking at the elevation required for a set of deterministic design parameters, find ways to reduce the size or volume of it as much as possible to reduce cost, and then possibly look at the sensitivity of some of the input parameters. This paper discusses a stochastic modelling approach for starter dykes that allows a wide range of design inputs to be simulated quickly, with an envelope of possible results produced. The sensitivity to different parameters can also be examined to understand which design inputs have the biggest impact on the required dyke sizing. By integrating the 3D TSF modelling tool Muk3D with GoldSim, it will be demonstrated how a wide range of scenarios can be evaluated and how that information can be used to make better decisions about the selection of design options.CITATION:Cooper, C A and Suter, G A, 2018. The ironmaking industry consumes a large amount of fossil fuel derived carbon as heat source, reducing agent of iron ores and carburising agent of reduced iron. Although the demand for drastic decrease of carbon dioxide emission, carbon is an essential element for smelting process of molten iron. The carbon recycling ironmaking process by circulating CO has been already proposed to achieve carbon neutrality. However, the production of molten hot metal is not considered in this process because sufficient amount of carbon does not dissolve in reduced iron by CO. Therefore, our group has suggested a new carbon recycling ironmaking process which can produce hot metal. In this process, free carbon and iron carbides produced by carbon deposition reaction using metallic iron as a catalyst are used. It is known that only Fe3C is obtained as iron carbide by using CO gas, however, Fe5C2 is also produced by adding H2 gas. The composite agglomerated with these carbonaceous materials and fine iron ore (Deposited Carbon-Iron oxide Composite: DCIC) is reduced and melted in a furnace. It is reported that Fe3C in DCIC accelerates the reduction reaction and melting of the composite. In this study, the effects of iron carbides and free carbon on the melting behaviour of DCIC are investigated. Fe3C, Fe5C2 and free carbon were produced by vapour deposition using porous iron whiskers and CO-CO2-H2 gas. These were agglomerated with hematite reagent at a certain ratio to prepare DCIC samples with and without Fe5C2. The samples were heated up to 1300°C in inert atmosphere. The DCIC containing Fe5C2 completely melted and iron nuggets were obtained after the experiment. This behaviour was not observed in the composite without Fe5C2. This indicates that using Fe5C2 is more preferable than Fe3C for molten iron production using DCIC.

Pike River Coal Limited (PRCL) is opening a new underground coal mine in the Paparoa Ranges north-east of Greymouth. To access the coal reserves, PRCL have had to build a 13 km access road through regrowth and virgin forest, and appointed McConnell Dowell Constructors Limited, with URS New Zealand Limited as their consulting engineers, to construct the final access link: a 2.3 km long, 5.5 m wide and 4.5 m high incline tunnel. This paper discusses the logistical issues of construction in an isolated pristine forest in mountain land and how they were addressed. It provides an overview of the 90 per cent complete tunnel and how challenging rock conditions have been mastered. It outlines briefly the remaining work which is construction of pit bottom workings where the mine infrastructure will be housed and construction of a 110 m deep, 4.0 m diameter, vertical ventilation shaft.

Pbo activities have been measured in conventional blast furnace and direct smelting type slags at 1200¦C. Much higher activity coefficients than previously measured have been obtained and attributed to interactions between iron and lead oxides. The behaviour of PbO in the two types of slag reflects their relative silica contents. Simple equations derived from mathematical modelling work are presented for the prediction of Pbo activities in complex industrial slags.

Operating efficiency is becoming paramount as the mining industry moves towards globalisation and conglomeration. Mining companies are continuously searching for new technologies that can improve plant efficiency, by reducing operating costs and maximising metal recovery. Identification of how gold losses occur within an operating plant is crucial for determining appropriate operating strategies for improved metallurgical performance. Classical mineralogical and metallurgical techniques enable the operator to identify where losses occur in terms of particle size and mineral associations, however how the gold is hosted within the mineral grains (for example, as solid solution or as fine micro-inclusions) is more difficult to determine. This paper provides details of the testwork methodology, and resultant laboratory study to improve gold recovery.

In 2019 the Chinese Ministry of Ecology and Environment issued guidelines promoting the implementation of ultra-low emissions in the iron and steelmaking industry. These guidelines aim to drive improvements in air quality through the reduction of particulate matter (PM), sulfur dioxide (SO2) and nitrogen oxide (NOx). Secondly, it also represents an initial means to commence decarbonisation of the industry. The ultra-low emissions guidelines propose that well over 80 per cent of China’s production capacity will achieve these targets by 2025. In response, many sintering operations have implemented numerous improvements to the process that result in significant efficiency gains. Of note is the adoption of deep bed sintering where, with some modifications to equipment, the sintering bed depth is increased resulting in sizable reductions of SO2 and NOx emissions. This paper will also provide an overview of the requirements to introduce deep-bed sintering into an operation and highlight test work completed which quantifies the resultant reduction in emissions.

Solid Energy also provides fixed term opportunities for consultants and contracting companies, who complement the wealth of knowledge already within the company.   Focussing on Stockton Mine and my involvement there as an Engineering Geologist, this paper looks at Stockton Mine and the Stockton Water Management Project and outlines the career paths of other young professionals also working at Stockton.

The behaviour of tailings under cyclic loading has an impact on the stability and deformation of tailings dams and a good understanding of the cyclic behaviour of the tailings under earthquakes is important for tailings engineers and tailings operators for the design and safe operation of tailings dams. This paper presents an investigation into the cyclic behaviour of tailings using both laboratory cyclic direct simple shear (DSS) testing and numerical modelling. The laboratory testing involved cyclic DSS tests on gold tailings and zinc-copper tailings under different loadings and loading frequencies. The gold tailings specimen tested at a higher loading frequency and a higher cyclic stress ratio experienced spontaneous liquefaction during cyclic shearing and the zinc-copper tailings specimen tested at a lower loading frequency and a similar cyclic stress ratio exhibited ductile behaviour and liquefied due to cyclic mobility. The liquefaction behaviour of the tailings was modelled using an advanced constitutive model (UBCSAND), which was developed specifically to model soil liquefaction and strain softening under cyclic loading. The constitutive soil model presents the nonlinear soil behaviour under dynamic loading using a hyperbolic stress-strain relation. Dynamic analyses were carried out using a finite difference program FLAC. The cyclic stress-induced excess pore water pressures measured in the laboratory were modelled using numerical simulations of the laboratory tests under different loading conditions. The results of the non-linear dynamic analyses demonstrated the capability of numerical modelling of cyclic shearing induced excess pore water pressure and the onset of the spontaneous liquefaction. The laboratory investigation and numerical modelling technique provided the key properties and parameters for the dynamic analyses to assess the stability and deformation of tailings dams under design earthquake events. More importantly, the laboratory tests and numerical modelling provided some insights into liquefaction behaviour of the tailings during earthquakes. CITATION:Li, A, Laxman, M and Jinto, H, 2018. This paper outlines the journey of cultural maturation and management system development at the Mt Rawdon (MRO) gold mine from its acquisition by Evolution Mining Limited (Evolution) in late 2011 to 2016.Evolution embarked upon a series of projects that aimed to improve the operational consistency and implementation of change on-site, while leveraging off the existing strengths of the operation. This document describes the gaps that were identified, the processes used to close them, and the resulting cultural change and production outcomes, with a specific focus on how to optimise the culture at any mining operation.MRO had a history of four owners in less than three years when it became a key asset of Evolution. The site leadership team (SLT) decided to influence the culture at MRO by reviewing and upgrading the existing management processes.The first priority was to improve transparency and collaboration at the SLT level, followed by improving competency in project management. The next phase was to strengthen the internal communication using a deliberately designed network of meetings, communication screens and other initiatives. Once there was some traction, the focus moved toward increasing production volume and decreasing cost per unit by improving short-term planning and execution capability. Together with other initiatives, this resulted in improved collaboration between all functions, which in turn netted over 37 per cent mining production uplift.Following solid success, a process of prioritisation and alignment management was implemented. This supported the ‘Mine to Mill one operation’ ideal and allowed the SLT to decide month-by-month what actions were to be prioritised. These priorities incorporated production realities and longer term imperatives of the balanced business plan.Much of this work was completed during a period of declining gold prices and a relentlessly strong Australian dollar, making it difficult to justify spending money on improvement projects. Global cement production accounts for about five per cent of man-made CO2 emissions (WBCSD, 2002). Such operating practices will increasingly be considered unsustainable, unless significant reductions in environmental impact can be realised by the industry.Slag is a high volume waste product from ironmaking, with about 300 kg of slag being produced per ton of iron. Critically, one ton of slag waste, if used as a replacement feedstock for Ordinary Portland cement (OPC), can prevent around one ton of emitted CO2 since no calcining is required. Slag cement blends can also show superior properties compared to OPC, such as lower heats of hydration and higher late strengths, but more development is needed to overcome their low early strengths. Rapid quenching of molten slag is required to produce æhydraulically-activeÆ binder when reacting with OPC; but water quenching can also require between five to ten tons of water per ton of slag at the plant. æDryÆ granulation (atomisation) is emerging as an alternative technology, the resulting solid product does not require drying, and possibilities exist for recovering heat energy from the hot slag.CSIRO Minerals has well-developed skills and equipment in pilot-scale pyrometallurgical treatment, and granulation of molten slag, including traditional wet, and also dry methods. Techno-economic desktop studies can also be used to help quantify factors such as value-adding of treated waste products, potential reductions in CO2 emissions and carbon credits, reductions in water consumption, and the possible decreased energy costs associated with fine grinding of dry slag granulate.The authors will present preliminary results from slag atomisation/dry granulation testwork (0.5 - 2.5 kg scale) and associated modelling studies, conducted using a æsyntheticÆ and industrial ironmaking slag. Outcomes from a techno-economic study on production of cement utilising wet or dry atomised slag granulate will also be discussed in detail.
