Log washers have been used for many years in the washing of clay iron ores, phosphate rock and manganese ores, but not until the past 15 years have they been employed to any extent in the preparation of aggregate materials and fluxing stone. For a machine of such importance where tenacious clay or soft rock must be eliminated, there are few data generally available. The purpose of this paper is to set forth the results obtained from several operations, together with a few suggestions for planning a specific installation. Where the material to be washed out consists of loose surface soil, silt, or small amounts of quickly soluble clay, there is little competition with other forms of washers, because greater power and maintenance are required for the operation of log washers, but where the foreign matter is a stiff clay, such as occurs with high-calcium limestones and in marginal gravel deposits, the ability of other kinds of washers to eliminate completely the hard clay balls is at least uncertain. Then the log washer comes into its own field, for with the breaking and churning action of the logs it will clean out the toughest clay. Even with material from the hydraulic dredge, if it contains tough clay, the log washer is desirable unless the gravel is subjected to a costly soaking and rehandling process. Recently there has been a considerable development in other types of machines to accomplish these results but it is not within the scope of this paper to make comparisons between competitive types, but to present the best obtainable data on log washers only. From the primitive design that gave it its name, a long log hewn from a tree, with paddles forged to shape from strap iron and attached by lag screws, the log washer has gradually been developed to the present all-steel type. As now manufactured, the log washer consists essentially of two built-up logs on which are mounted a series of paddles, carried by shafts fitted at the ends of the logs on bearings fastened outside the enclosing steel box, or trough, which is set at an angle of about 5" to 10" and into which the material is fed. INRODUCTION Roan Consolidated Mines Limited (RCM) operates five underground mines - Mufulira, Luanshya, Baluba, Chambeshi and Chibuluma (figure 1) . Associated metallurgical plants provide for the operations of milling, smelting two refineries for copper and a cobalt plant. Primarily a producer of high quality copper (242,000 tonnes during 1980) the Company is also the world's second largest producer of cobalt metal. RCM's remaining ore reserves at 31st March 1980 were 275 million tonnes at 2.84% copper. Monthly ore production is in excess of 1.2 million tonnes. Sublevel open stoping was the choice of mining method for the first underground operations on the Copperbelt for ore with dips steeper than 30 degrees. This was for use at the Roan Antelope mine, subsequently to be called Luanshya mine. The sublevel open stoping system was planned based on the methods used in many of the iron mines of Michigan and New York and in the copper mines of Tennessee. Peterson (Ref. 1) gave the following reasons for employing sublevel stoping, reasons which are still valid today: (1) the working place could always be barred and made safe, and the sublevel exit was always at hand; (2) the working conditions were similar day by day and drilling operations were repetitive; (3) pillar spacing can be varied as conditions demand; and (4) stoping operations could be shut down completely or opened up to full capacity at short notice, without affecting grade or causing wastage of reserves. Such was the success of the method that it was adopted as the basic mining method at all the RCM mines in their initial stages. Although cut and fill, block caving, and sub- level caving methods have been used, sublevel open stoping in its many variants still accounts for nearly 90% of total ore production in the Company. The following descriptions outline some of the applications of sublevel open stoping within RCM. LUANSHYA Geology There are two main ore deposits at Luanshya: the Roan (Luanshya Mining Area), in which mining began in 1930, and Baluba, in which mining production started in 1973 (figure 2). Both orebodies occur in synclinal and variably folded basins. These basins are underlain and completely surrounded by much older schists and granites. The ore formation, an argillite, lies near the base of the sediments and is underlain by conglomerates, quartzites and arkoses. Copper mineralisation is mainly found in two well defined zones, separated by a varying thickness of pyrite mineralisation. In the eastern part of the Roan deposit only the upper orebody is present, but west of 18 shaft and at Baluba the lower orebody predominates. Locally the subjacent quartzites of the footwall formation are also mineralised with copper. The copper mineralisation is found princi- pally as disseminated sulphides, mainly chalcocite, bornite and chalcopyrite. Near the surface the sulphides have been changed to oxides. At Baluba the cobalt mineral carrollite is found with the sulphides. Mining methods Sublevel open stoping is the basic mining method. In its standard form this method is best suited to steeply inclined orebodies, with simple structures and with a strong foot- wall and hangingwall. In recent years, as more complex folding and flatter dipping orebodies have been encountered, considerable variations have been introduced. Stope drilling is effected with drifters and extension steel.

His father Geology and his mother Physics separated shortly after his birth, which occurred during the World War amid a smoke screen of mathematics. He was kicked around a great deal. His parents could not agree on a name, and they finally christened him "Geophysics," for short. His relatives insisted that the name should be "Geophysical Prospecting," "Geophysical Exploration" or "Exploratory Geophysics"; though the youngster has grown up by now, this battle is still going on. His father did not think the child would amount to much until he began to show some unexpected talents, which were acquired, no doubt, from his mother Physics. His progress caused his father no little worry, and he began to wonder whether his offspring would help him in his business when he grew up or would set up shop in competition with the old man. His aunt Petroleum watched his growth with benevolent interest; his uncle Mining remained rather skeptical and cousin Civil Engineering not only assumed the attitude of the man from Missouri but was not much convinced even after he had been shown. Making a long story short, the kid decided that he had to stand on his own feet and get along as best he could. Having come from a good family he possessed some outstanding characteristics such as resourcefulness and a reasonable amount of business ability. He therefore decided that it would be to his advantage to follow in his father's and mother's footsteps as much as possible, and develop the good qualities of both. As a result, the youngster did fairly well for himself, and his relatives decided that it might be to their advantage to be on better terms with him. Father Geology had come to the conclusion that the boy could be very helpful to him and now wanted him to live in his house. His mother, who had brought him through the teething and measles stages, felt quite capable of bringing up the boy without the help of his father; and, as the fairer sex will do, would confide to a neighbor every now and then that his

The purpose of this report is to supply the Coal Classification Committee' with information for use in the formulation of a system of classification of coals according to their uses. Consideration is given here only to the nonferrous metallurgical operations that consume relatively large amounts of coal or coke; i. e., the smelting of copper, lead, zinc and aluminum. For all of these uses, coal of certain definite qualities is desired. Geographical location, however, often determines whether these qualities can be specified. In some instances the preferred qualities must be specified, regardless of cost. In others, quality may be sacrificed for lower cost, although the best quality consistent with cost is usually the determining factor. These considerations will be outlined in the following discussion under the various uses, which, however, will illustrate the impracticability of preparing definite specifications for coal used in the majority of the nonferrous industries. Coal and Coke in Copper Metallurgy From the standpoint of coal consumption, copper smelting and refining operations are the most important of the nonferrous metallurgical uses of coal. As nickel ores treated in the United States and Canada are associated with copper, the first step in their recovery is really a copper-smelting operation; accordingly, the following considerations under copper smelting apply equally to nickel. Copper Smelting in Reverberatory Furnaces.—For a long time, rever-beratory copper-smelting furnaces were fired with lump coal burned on grates in a fire box. Later, lump coal was displaced by pulverized coal or oil burned directly in the smelting chamber. Recently, natural gas has been used in several plants, although producer gas was used for this purpose at Great Falls as early as 1903.2 Requirements for coal used in

THE usual reverberatory system of smelting cop--1- per concentrate or calcine has for its component parts a furnace and one or two waste heat boilers. These parts are operated on a basis of compromise, since the furnace can send gas to the boilers at too high a temperature and the boilers by plugging, due to dust or slag, can place a definite limit on the amount of fuel the furnace can burn. Over the years the copper concentrate smelting furnace has had few advances in design. The simple rules of design such as the flame should wipe the bath and the speed of the gases should be reasonably low for dust carrying purposes seem to cover the main features. In the construction of the individual furnaces some innovations are always being introduced. Among these are charging so that the work of smelting is a complete bath process, the use of suspended brick arches in place of sprung arches, the use of basic brick, not only in the crucible, but also in roof and sidewalls, the use of various means to feed the charge, the use of magnetite or other heavy material to construct the hearth, water cooling of bridgewall and slag skimming bay, the smelting of raw charge instead of calcine, the use of preheated air, and possibly the use of oxygen-enriched air for combustion. But the general outlines of the furnaces have not changed much except as to size. Furnaces at Hurley As shown on Fig. 1, the furnace at Hurley is 126 ft long between the longitudinal buckstays and 32 ft wide at the skewback plates. The foundation is a concrete retaining wall with piers at intervals that go deeper into the earth. Purposely the wall at the burner end of the furnace is not backed-up as tightly as the other parts of the foundation so that movement due to expansion may take place here rather than into the boiler foundations. Within these foundation retaining walls of concrete, the earth has been removed to allow the placement of the crucible brick base inside of which a silica hearth is laid 4 ft 6 in. in depth. No expansion is left in the brick base and crucible where they are in contact with the hearth. The hearth itself is of quartzite crushed to 1 in. size with fines left in the product. An 8 in. layer is laid and tamped with paving tampers to about 6 in. in thickness. Then a layer of silica flour is spread and vibrated into the hearth. This operation is repeated until a depth of 4 ft 6 in. is occupied by the silica mass onion-skinned in layers of approximately 6 in. Before firing the entire hearth is covered with broken slag to a depth of 4 in. so that a seal may be formed on the hearth. The crucible is completely faced with magnesite chemically bonded brick while the outside, against the foundation, is made of silica brick. The side-walls are carried up with silica brick in which expansion joints are left at intervals. Above the crucible the sidewall is corbelled to form a shelf on which the charge may build up along the side-walls, see Fig. 2. The arch of the furnace is sprung 20 in. silica brick, with the longitudinal centerline horizontal the length of the furnace, and some 9 ft in the center above the bath. Both straight and wedge brick are used in the construction and a thin silica mortar is troweled for joints. After the arch under heat has assumed its permanent shape, a silica slurry is spread over the arch to fill any cracks that have formed, thus giving bearing surface to the brick and preventing dust from entering the body of the arch to act as a future fluxing agent. The uptake of the furnace slopes up to the boiler entrance where a brick pilaster divides the gas stream for the two boilers. Over this flared uptake is a suspended flat arch of firebrick. The pilaster and sidewalls are constructed of firebrick but the bottom of the uptake is lined with silica brick and fettled through holes in the roof with siliceous fettling. Close to the entrance of each boiler is a brick covered slot through which water-cooled dampers may be lowered in event of boiler trouble. These water-cooled dampers are hung permanently in position ready to be lowered when needed. Flexible hoses to follow the dampers as they are lowered are connected at all times and individual chain blocks are used to lower the dampers. A pump supplying water is started before the dampers enter the heat. Charging of the furnace along the sidewalls for some 80 ft from the bridgewall is accomplished by electric vibrating conveyors fed by belt from charge storage bins above the furnace. These conveyors

IN the numbers of the Engineering and Mining Journal of June 27th and July 11th, 1874, there appeared some very complete statistics of the working of some anthracite blast-furnaces belonging to a large establishment in this country, followed by calculations of the heat requirements of the furnaces, similar to those which have been made for European furnaces by Mr. I. Lowthian Bell, Prof. Gruner, Prof. Akerman and others. To the author of these valuable papers, Mr. John A. Church, of New York, the thanks of American iron metallurgists are due for this attempt (the first, to my knowledge at least), to attack systematically and scientifically the problem of economy of fuel in our anthracite blast-furnaces, by applying the formulas obtained from European practice and from the experiments of European metallurgists, to the determination of the amounts and the modes of distribution of the heat production and absorption in our furnaces. In order to facilitate a comparison of the results thus obtained for the anthracite furnaces in question with those obtained for the best types of European coke furnaces, I have reduced to the same standard of heat units (the product of the ton and the degree Centigrade), and placed side by side, the calculations of the heat requirements of one of the furnaces of the Clarence works, as given by Mr. Bell, of a furnace at Pouzin, on the banks of the Rhone, given by Prof. Gruner, and of the anthracite furnaces for 1869-73, as given -by Mr. Church. Table I shows the different conditions of working of the three furnaces, of which Table II gives the respective heat requirements. I have made this latter table in such a manner as to give for each furnace its heat requirements, both according to the views of Mr. Bell and those of Prof. Gruner. Mr. Bell assumes that all the carbonic acid produced by the decomposition of the carbonate of lime of the charge, is reduced to carbonic oxide by contact with solid carbon ; also, that the carbon of the pig iron is a portion of that deposited in the ore in the upper part of the furnace, by the dissociation of carbonic oxide. There are few disasters so difficult to deal with as an underground fire. It is inaccessible at best, and generally unapproachable ; and it finds most material in the very places where it can do most harm, namely, in large stopes and in " heavy " ground where timbers are massed, and in shafts and level-stations where there are inevitably strong drafts to make the burning yet more fierce. The fire constituting the subject of this note occurred in the shaft of the Standard mine at Bodie, California, and originated after the departure of the night-force at 3 a.m., being discovered by the men going to work at 6.30. At that time it had gained already considerable headway, and was throwing smoke plentifully from the collar of the shaft. It must be premised, for understanding of the situation, that in this shaft all hoisting is done to the 320-foot level, where the material is dropped by chutes 30 feet. to the tunnel-level, through which it is run to the mill. PART I.-QUALITATIVE, SPECTRUM ANALYSIS THOSE chemists (they are still greatly in the minority) who use the spectroscope, use it very often, and find it almost indispensable. As a means of detecting minute quantities of the metals it is unrivalled. A metal can be readily distinguished in the presence of any other element, compound, or mixture without the necessity of separation. The qualitative analysis of the metallic constituents of a substance, which, the spectroscope gives so easily, is a sure basis for planning a chemical analysis. As the determination of each element proceeds the purity of precipitates maybe checked as often as desired. If, possessing these advantages; the spectroscope has been neglected in general chemistry, it is not surprising that it was neglected in metallurgical chemistry; for many of the impurities which are of industrial interest, even when they are present in a metal or alloy in small quantities, are not then always easily detected by the examination of their visible spectrum. In a study of the influence of cold rolling on mechani cal properties of steel, it was found that the specific rolling procedure influenced crystallographic orientation. Properties developed by several rolling modes were determined and related to crystallographic orientation. Sanzples were cold-rolled various amounts on a laboratory mill. When palm oil was used as a lubricant, the crystallographic orientation was homogeneous throughout the thickness of the samples. Other samples were rolled without lubrication. Variations in intensity of the recrystallization texture components persisted throughout more than 50 pct of the volume of these samples. When the average plastic strain ratio, which is dependent upon crystallogvaphic orientation, was plotted as a function of percent reduction, a maximum was found at 40 pct in the samples which contained the observed texture variation. No maximum was found for the samples with the homogeneous texture distribution. Other mechanical properties, such as tensile strength and yield strength, were not influenced by the variation in crystallopaphic orientation. MECHANICAL properties of steel sheets depend, in general, upon the structural properties of the steel. For example, the Petch equation describes the relationship between yield strength and grain size. Other properties, such as hardness, vary with chemical composition. The plastic strain ratio, or R value, has been found to be dependent upon crystallographic orientation . In the course of investigating the effect of cold rolling on mechanical properties, it was found that a previously reported relationship between percent cold reduction and R value was not always observed. Published data had shown that the optimum cold reduction for best R values is 70 pct for aluminum killed steel.' However, by altering the rolling conditions, the optimum reduction can be shifted to much lower values, or it can be moved to very high values. This paper describes the rolling conditions that lead to shifting of the optimum cold reduction. The effect of rolling conditions on the various structure parameters and the resulting mechanical properties are evaluated. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Samples of three low-carbon aluminum killed steels were cold-rolled various amounts on a 9-in.-diam 2-high laboratory mill. Hot-mill thermal practice and steel chemistries are listed in Table I. Steel A was rolled with palm oil lubrication and heavy reductions on each pass; i.e., a total reduction of 75 pct was ac- complished with a maximum of five passes. Steel B was rolled without lubrication, and light reductions were given on each pass. After approximately 75 pct reduction, it was necessary to use a small amount of light oil to achieve any additional reduction in thickness. Following cold reduction, the samples were box-annealed at 1300°F for 10 hr. The heating rate between 800" and 1300°F was 50°F per hr, and the cooling rate following the soak period was 50°F per hr. Tensile specimens were machined from the annealed material and these were used to measure yield strength, tensile strength, and the plastic strain ratio (R value). Recrystallization textures were determined by an inverse pole figure technique.*'3 Integrated intensities of the (110), (002), (112), and (222) reflections were recorded for those planes lying parallel to the sheet surface. Examinations were made on both surfaces of each sample, and also at various levels beneath each surface to approximately 0.010 in. depth by etching techniques. RESULTS R Values. The R values obtained in steels A and B are shown as a function of percent cold reduction in Fig. 1. No optimum cold reduction was observed in steel A, rolled with palm oil lubrication. It is likely, however, that an optimum reduction would have occurred had higher reductions than 88 pct been employed. The optimum reduction in steel B occurred at 40 pct. The application of geostatistics to coal reserve analysis is discussed. One problem in particular, the selection of the optimum locations for exploratory drill holes, is considered in detail. A new interactive program to help the geologist determine the best locations is described and applied to a specific property. The steps in the process are described and then illustrated using a mine's actual data. First, a variogram is selected based on graphical displayed information from the known sample data. Kriging estimates are made for the region of interest and the blocks within the region. The location of future exploratory drill holes is selected based on the criterion of minimizing the region estimation variance for a given number of exploratory holes. The least number of exploratory holes required to meet a specified upper limit on the regional variance is also determined. The computer generated recommendations for the exploratory drill holes are compared to a manually prepared drilling plan. The post- drilling analysis of the results is compared to the predicted values.

9.1-1. Description and Basic Function. A conventional railroad haulage system for a surface mine performs the function of transporting the ore and/or waste out of the pit to a crushing plant or dump. Trains consisting of a locomotive and gondola or side-dump care suitable for loading by power shovels are used. Gondola cars are restricted to hauling ore as a rotary dumper is required to unload them. Side-dump cars are more versa- tile, being satisfactory for carrying both ore and waste; but because of their additional dumping mechanism they are likely to be more expensive to maintain (12). Also they weigh up to two times as much as a flat-bottom car of the same capacity, and, therefore, fewer cars can be hauled per train. Standard-gauge track is most commonly used. Track systems incorporate temporary track of low quality in areas where moves are frequent and permanent track of high quality on main lines. Rail haulage enabled open pit mining to establish its reputation, for efficiency. Prior to World War II it was the principal type of transportation used in large pits. Other successful surface mine haulage methods have been developed since that time. These have served to supplement railroad transportation, permitting selection of a method that is best adapted to the peculiar requirements of each mining project. 9.1-2. General Applicability and Controlling Physical Conditions. For handling rough rock, the shovel-train system is unexcelled (6). The ideal application is in a physically large, but not excessively deep, open pit mine from which the coarsely blasted ore and waste must be transported distances in excess of three miles. In nzost cases, the driving force for a lattice transformation is produced by supercooling below the equilibriunz transformation temperature. The interfnce reaction in isothermally annealed, multiphase diffusion couples may involve a luttice transformation which also requires a driving force. Direct experinzental evidence has been obtained for the existence of the driring force in the form of a supersaturated phase at the aocc)-0@cc) interface in Cu:Cu-12.5 ult pct A1 couples; the super saturation is equivalent to an excess free energy of approximately 3 cal per mol at 905. A tentatiue interpretation of the dynanzic situation a1 the interface based on the free energy-composition diagram is proposed. THE presently accepted theory of diffusion in multiphase couples1 states that there will be a phase layer in the diffusion zone for every region which has three degrees of freedom and which is crossed by the diffusion path in the equilibrium phase diagram. For binary systems, this restriction excludes all but single-phase fields and, for ternary systems, only one- and two-phase fields are included. In addition, Rhines"~ as well as other investigators3 6 have reported that the compositions of the various phases adjacent to the interfaces are, for all practical purposes, the compositions given by the intersections of the diffusion path with the solubility limits of the single-phase fields of the equilibrium phase diagram. Some studies of the rate of thickening of these intermediate diffusion layers indicate that the thickness of the layer changes para-bolically with time, or: where x is the position of the interface relative to an origin xo, t is the diffusion time, and k is a temperature-dependent factor. crank7 shows mathematically that, if the compositions at an interface are independent of time and the motion of the interface is controlled by the diffusion of the elements to and from the interface, then the segments of the concentration penetration curve for a semi-infinite step-function couple will be described by an equation of the form: hence, Eq. [l] follows from Eq. (21 if the interface compositions are fixed and if the motion of the interface is diffusion-controlled. Although the concept of local equilibrium being attained at interfaces has assumed a prominent role in the theory of diffusion in multiphase couples, experimental evidence and theoretical discussions which challenge the general validity of this concept have been reported in the literature. arkeen' has stated that strict obedience to the conditions set by the equilibrium phase diagram cannot be expected in any system in which diffusion is occurring because diffusion takes place only in the presence of an activity gradient. Darken also noted that it is usually assumed that equilibrium is attained locally at the interface although the system as a whole is not at equilibrium, the implication being that the transformation at the interface is rapid in comparison with the rate of supply of the elements by diffusion. ISirkaldy3 indicates agreement with Darken in that he believes the concept of local equilibrium is at best an approximation because the motion of the phase boundary requires that there be a free-energy difference and, hence, a departure from the equilibrium composition at the interface. Seebold and Birks9 have stated that diffusion couples cannot be in true equilibrium, but the results obtained are often in good agreement with the phase diagram. The initial deviation from equilibrium in a diffusion couple will be quite large because alloys of significantly different compositions are usually joined together. Kirkaldy feels that the transition time for the attainment of constant interface compositions (essentially the equilibrium values) will be small, although in some cases finite. Castleman and sieglelo observed such transition times in multiphase A1-Ni couples, but at low annealing temperatures these times were quite long. Similarly, ~asing" found departures, which persisted for more than 20 hr, at phase interfaces in Au-Ni and Fe-Mo diffusion couples. Braun and Powell's12 measurements of the solubility limits of the intermediate phases in the Au-In system as determined by microprobe analysis of diffusion couples do not agree with the limits reported by Hiscocks and Hume-Rothery13 who used equilibrated samples. Finally, Borovskii and ~archukova'~ have stated that the determination of the solubility limits of phase diagrams using high-resolution micro-analyzer measurements at the interfaces of multiphase couples is not an accurate technique because of deviations from the equilibrium compositions at a moving interface; diffusion couples may be used to map out the phase boundaries in the equilibrium diagram, but the final determination of the solubility iimits should be made with equilibrated samples. The purpose of this work was to investigate the conditions prevailing at an interface in a multiphase diffusion couple and to compare the interface compositions with those associated with true thermodynamic equilibrium between the two phases. Microanalyzer techniques were used to measure interface compositions in two-phase Cu-A1 diffusion couples annealed at 80@, 905", and 1000°C for various times.

It is apparent that repressuring of the oil measures is becoming increasingly important to the oil industry, and is a matter that warrants the best efforts of the petroleum engineer charged with applying this method of operation to a producing property. Considerable attention has been directed to repressuring in various California oil fields, such as Dominguez and Seal Beach, which have served to sell the more progressive operator on this idea and also to keep him sold. The projects that have received most attention are in comparatively young fields where the fluid levels are high, the wells, perhaps, still flowing, where the wet gas production is of considerable volume, and where there is vital need of immediate conservation of gas, which otherwise would be blown to the air. The new State of California Gas Law, which prohibits the waste of gas, has served to interest the oil industry in means of conserving the gas that is now being blown to the air because of lack of markets. This vitally affects the operator in the older, well-depleted oil fields of the state, because in many cases he has a limited market for gas, on account of the flush production from the more active oil fields. While the waste of gas is relatively small in these older fields, such as the Midway-Sunset area, it now attains considerable importance, since under the new State Gas Law it must be put to some bcneficial use. Repressuring in the older fields of California has not received the attention of the petroleum engineers that is warranted by the present situation. This paper was prepared with the view of presenting the salient features connected with repressuring in the well-depleted oil measures of the older fields, and to show what results have already been obtained in these fields by injecting the unmarketable gas into the sands, particularly in the Midway-Sunset field in the San Joaquin Valley of California. Other projects in the older fields of the state offer some supporting data in this connection, such as the Shields Canyon and the Brea Canyon fields. IN many places throughout the Western mountain plateau regions of the United States coal beds in place have been burned over very extensive, areas, the fire evidently originating on the nakedly exposed outcrop of the coal bed and gradually burning its way into the bed for considerable distances under very heavy cover. . The surface evidences of the burned-out coal beds are seen in the calcined and discolored rocks overlying the places of the outcrop. The greater the mass of the burned coal the higher the results of its combustion can be seen in the overlying strata. I have noted many instances of this condition in the States of South Dakota, Wyoming, Colorado, New Mexico, and Arizona. In the lignite fields of Dakota and Wyoming I noted stretches of level country many square miles in extent where the surface rocks were roasted and vitrified by the burning of a great bed of lignite lying nearly level and with a light cover; this is probably the most favorable natural condition for the burning out of a coal bed. The less the depth of the rock covering overlying the coal bed, the better the .chance for a continuous supply of air to the fire; but when the coal bed clips heavily into the ground, or even if level, if it, passes under a hill or mountain which gives the bed a heavy covering of strata, the fire has more chances of being extinguished from natural causes than in the first condition described. The distance which, a crop fire may extend into a coal field is very much influenced by the dip, the thickness of the coal bed, and the nature of the rock covering immediately overlying it.
