The following paper aims to present in a much condensed form the salient results of a detailed geological study of the Bisbee quadrangle, Arizona, carried on during the latter part of the year 1902. It is essentially an abstract of the final official report which will shortly appear in the series of professional papers of the U. S. Geological Survey, accompanied by maps, sections and illustrations. I. Geography. The Bisbee quadrangle, which includes the Warren mining district, lies in Cochise county in the southeastern part of Arizona. It is inclosed between the meridians 109" 45' and 110" 00' and the parallels 31" 30' and 31" 201, the latter being locally the Mexican boundarg line. The area of the quadrangle is about 170 square miles, and includes the southeastern half of the Mule Mountains, one of the smaller of the isolated ranges characteristic of this part of Arizona. The Mule Mountains, while less markedly linear than the Dragoon, Huachuca, Chiricahua, and other neighboring ranges, have a general NW-SE. trend. They may be considered as extending from the old mining town of Tombstone to the Mexican border, a distance of about 30 miles. On the northwest they are separated by the broad, flat floor of Sulphur Spring Valley from the Chiricahua Range, and on the southeast by the similar broad valley of the Rio San Pedro from the Huachuca Range. The maximum width of the range is about 12 miles, and its greatest elevation attained by Mt. Ballard, west of Bisbee, is 7,400 ft. above sea-level. An index-map, showing the geographical position of the Bisbee quadrangle, is shown in Fig. 1. In choosing solid oxide electrolytes for use in the measurement of thermodynamic quantities at high temperatures, the two most important criteria are the values of the partial ionic and electronic conduc tizities. Measurements of these conducticities have been made for some Group IVA oxides and solid solutions of these oxides with CaO, Y2O3, and La2O3. The total conductivities as a function of temperature. oxygen partial pressure, and composition were determined, as well as the electromotive forces of cells in which the oxygen partial Pressures of the electrodes were between 10-7 and 10-29 atm at 1000°C. Additional factors that influence the experimental arrangements, such as the operating temperature, the appropviate cell atmosphere, and electrode kinetics, are also discussed. IT has long been recognized that galvanic cells incorporating solid electrolytes can possess many advantages for the measurement of high-temperature thermodynamic data. Unfortunately, the electrical-transport properties have only been established for a few solid electrolytes, although attempts have been made, and are still being made, to use such materials as porcelain' and magnesia.' Kuikkola and Wagner have discussed3 and demonstrated4 various applications of solid electrolytes, and, in particular, their work stimulated the electrochemical measurement of oxygen activities using cells incorporating the solid oxide electrolyte, Zr0.85Ca0.15O1.85 The excellent characteristics of this oxide electrolyte have been confirmed by the investigations of Kingery et al.5 (oxygen ion diffusion), Carter and Rhodes6 (zirconium and calcium ion diffusion), and Weissbart and Ruka7 (electronic transference number). However the observations of Peters and Mobius,8 later confirmed by Schmalzried,9 indicated that the electronic component of zirconia-based electrolytes could become significant at low oxygen chemical potentials. Under these conditions, thoria-based electrolytes have obvious advantages arising from their superior thermodynamic stability. It was known that certain thoria solid solutions possessed defect fluorite structures containing anionic vacancies (cf. Zro.85Cao.l50O1. 85), although data on their electrical properties were conflicting. Kiukkola and wagner4 concluded that thoria-based electrolytes exhibited appreciable electronic conductivity, whereas Peters and Mobius8 mentioned that the electronic conductivity only became important at high oxygen partial pressures, but gave no further details. In addition, both Kiukkola and wagner4 and Peters and Mann'" had determined the oxygen chemical potentials associated with the Fe-FeO, Co-COO, Ni-NiO, and Cu-Cu2O equilibria, and it was not known whether discrepancies in their results could be attributed to the different cell design, or the thoria-based electrolyte used by Peters and Mann. These uncertainties have been resolved during the present investigation into the measurement of low oxygen chemical potentials, and transport properties of the relevant oxide electrolytes are presented and discussed. Other experimental difficulties associated with low oxygen chemical potential measurements are also described, with particular reference to the Nb-O system. 1. THEORETICAL CONSIDERATIONS Oxide systems of potential use as solid electrolytes possess a large energy gap between the valence and conduction bands. Little is known about the defects present in these wide-gap metal oxides as a function of impurity content and deviations from stoichiom-etry, or the mechanisms by which electronic charges move in these solids. For these materials it is convenient to represent the measured conductivity as the the sum of three terms: where a, is the conductivity due to positive hole conduction (p type), and oe is the electronic conductivity due to electron conduction (n type). U there is a large concentration of ionic vacancies fixed by composition then the ionic contribution will not be a function of oxygen pressure. Although the possibility of a pressure-independent electronic component also cannot be ignored, it is likely that such a term would only become significant at very high temperatures, and in general the positive hole conduction will increase with increasing oxygen pressure, and the electron conduction will increase with decreasing oxygen pressure. It follows that the total conductivity is related to oxygen partial pressure as follows:

RECENT investigations have elucidated many of the phenomena of the grain growth process, but have also revealed some conflicting and unexplained results. Beck and his co-workers1,2,3 have shown that grain growth continues with continued heating at one temperature until the average grain size approaches the thickness of the specimen, Plotting the logarithm of the average grain diameter, D, against the logarithm of the annealing time, t, they find the straight line relationship given by the equation: [D=Ktn [11] with possible small deviations at short annealing times. K and n are constants at constant temperature. On the other hand, Walker4 finds that, in alpha brass, the rate of growth falls off more rapidly than indicated by Eq I after long annealing, so that an equilibrium grain size is approached. Burke5 showed, using Walker's data, that time and temperature for grain growth are apparently related through an activation energy, H, according to the relationship: [t, Hr i '_ III t„ = R \T, - ~) [2]] where t1 and t2 are the annealing times necessary for the average grain size to increase from Do to D at temperatures T1 and T2 and R is the gas laws constant. In the case quoted, H had the value 60,000 cal per mol. The apparent validity of this relationship, at least up to 700°C, and the approximate value of H were later confirmed by Beck.' The results obtained by Beck, Kremer, Demer and Holzworth2 for aluminum and aluminum-magnesium alloys could not be satisfied by such a relationship, since the slope of the isothermal curves increased with increasing temperature. These data indicate and Beck, Holzworth and Hu6 later demonstrated experimentally that the only apparent factor controlling the rate of grain growth at constant temperature is the grain size. While many of the phenomena have been elucidated, a reasonably quantitative explanation of the process is lacking. There exists uncertainty even as to the primary driving force for grain growth, although there is a considerable body of indirect evidence that the interfacial energy of the grain boundary is responsible.7,8,10 Making implicit use of this assumption, several authors14,15 have pointed out that grain boundaries should migrate toward their center of curvature. Harker and Parker' have advanced this concept furthest, and show that one can expect grain boundary migration to occur only when the grain faces are curved, or when they meet at non-equilibrium angles. When the face is curved toward a grain A, for example, the atoms in the surface of grain B, on the other side of the boundary, are on the average more surrounded by the atoms of their lattice than the atoms on the surface of grain A. (San Francisco Meeting, September, 1915) THROUGH wide experience at numerous mills in the United States I have found that there is a decided difference of opinion among the producers of steel as to what constitutes commercially sound steel. Some metallurgists insist upon having, for certain grades of steel, a so-called "open steel," -i.e., one which contains numerous blowholes of varying sizes, and consequently but little volume of true pipe, although a central intermittent shrinkage cavity often extends well down into the ingot: Such blowholes and pipe are expected to weld up during rolling or forging, because their surfaces are not oxidized. Even if this be admitted, included slag particles and a high degree of segregation are bound to be present in the product of such ingots. Blowholes are the result of an oxidized heat, and all heats, unless made or finished in the electric furnace, are oxidized more or less. Subsequent deoxidation, or rather degasification, either in the ladle or in the mold, or in both, is necessary to reduce or prevent blowholes. As is well known, a greater yield of billets or sheets is secured from the ingot by allowing the formation of blowholes, but this is undoubtedly obtained at the expense of the quality of the product. Decided segregation of carbon, phosphorus, and sulphur, as well as small included slag particles, undoubtedly exists throughout the greater portion of all so-called open steel, and cannot be removed by cropping. The first requisite for sound, homogeneous steel ingots and blooms is therefore, in my opinion, so to treat the steel in the furnace, ladle, and mold that "piping" steel is produced. The line of demarcation between harmful and so-called "harmless" blowholes is practically impossible to define. Is it not, therefore, the better and safer practice to use means for the elimination of blowholes and correspondingly reduce the segregation and allow the formation of a well-defined shrinkage cavity or pipe .at the upper end of the ingot? The theoretical basis is presented for energy dissipation methods of measuring permeability in saturated heterogeneous media. Analysis starts with the equation for single-phase flow in heterogeneous porous media which is a first-order partial differential equation in the unknown permeability. This equation is reduced to a system of characteristic equations useful in deriving a differential expression for the permeability as a function of the known potential distribution. For steady flow systems the expression is integrable, giving the permeability integral for direct calculation of the distribution along successive streamlines. The boundary condition in permeability is presented and includes a discussion of the special requirement to assure uniqueness. Theoretical results and necessary computations are incorporated into two general computer programs capable of determining the permeability distribution in two- and three-dimensional steady flow systems. Results are then presented for an energy dissipation analysis using the methods and soltware to determine a field permeability thickness distribution. INTRODUCTION Theoretical work leading to the description of fluid flow in heterogeneous porous media has developed slowly and somewhat sporadically, although the areas of engineering applications predominantly involve flow in nonhomogeneous media. The lack of accurate and economical methods for measuring field permeability distributions has been a major limitation to realistic description of natural flow systems. The economical measurement of permeability using energy dissipation methods may overcome this limitation. Among other things, any permeability measurement method involves consideration of energy dissipation; as used here, "energy dissipation method" denotes the following general approach. The areal energy distribution is measured on an existing flow system in porous media. Then through appropriate analysis of the dissipation of energy in the flow system, the permeability distribution is determined throughout the region using the minimum boundary conditions required to assure a mathematically unique result. This paper presents the theoretical basis for such a method, as well as the techniques and computer software needed to carry out the analysis. The method and techniques are then used in a preliminary field application. EQUATIONS DESCRIBING FLOW IN HETEROGENEOUS MEDLA Heterogeneous as used here implies differing in kind, having unlike quantities or possessing different characteristics. Accordingly, a heterogeneous porous medium has unlike quantities or differing characteristics at different locations. More precisely, if a porous medium is heterogeneous with respect to some property, then that property is functionally dependent on the spatial location. (Media properties are considered here as macroscopic.) Specifically considering permeability k,** then k = G(x, y, z) ,............(1) or the permeability is a scalar function G of the location (x, y, z). Spatial variation of several other properties, of which porosity, dispersivity and medium compressibility are but a few, is implied by the broad title of heterogeneous porous media. RECONNAISSANCE of a part of southeastern Idaho and small strip of western Wyoming lying between longitudes 111° and 111° and 45' W., and latitudes 43° and 43° and 30' N., comprising an area of approximately 1330 sq. mi., was undertaken during the summer of 1923 for the collection of data regarding the oil possibilities of the region. TOPOGRAPHY, SETTLEMENT, AND ACCESSIBILITY The entire area lies within the upper Snake River drainage basin. Snake River flows through the northeastern and eastern part of the area in a northwesterly direction. The entire drainage system has been controlled by the structure of the sedimentary beds in the area, which exhibit numerous alternations of hard and soft strata with consequent unequal erosion. At the University Club, New York, Jan. 23, Chairman George E. Hale and other officers of the National Research Council, gave a dinner to officers of the national engineering and other societies. About thirty persons were present, including officers of the National Research Council, the four Founder Societies, American Society for Testing Materials, Society of Automotive Engineers, Inc., Illuminating Engineering Society, United Engineering Society, and Engineering Foundation. Letters were received from the Western Society of Engineers, which also had been invited. Gano Dunn, vice-chairman of National Research Council, was toastmaster. The proposed permanent organization of the National Research Council and possible methods of connection with the national engineering societies, either directly or through Engineering Foundation, were outlined. It was suggested that not only the four Founder Societies be represented in the Engineering Division of National Research Council, but also that the other national engineering societies be admitted to membership. It was proposed that the Engineering Division should have a chairman who should be an engineer of wide reputation and of the highest professional attainments who should devote his whole time to the establishment and development of the Division. Methods of organizing industrial research were discussed. At a subsequent meeting of the National Research Council, an invitation was issued to each of the national societies to form a research committee encouraging that committee to become active in the promotion of research within its respective field. Due recognition is to be given each committee in the general organization of the National Research Council. Dr. H. M. Howe, in a very interesting and comprehensive address, told of much important work that had been clone by the various sections of the Research Council, as that of mechanical engineering in developing the often rather nebulous devices for helping win the war and putting them in such form that they could be of direct use to the military service. The section on metallurgy, till lately under Bradley Stoughton and now under G. H. Clevenger, did much valuable work in the improvement of helmets and body armor and made very extensive ballistic tests with refractory steels for this purpose. Important work was done in investigating the fatigue of metals and results of great moment were achieved. The committee on ferro-alloys, under J. E. Johnson, Jr., did important work in effecting economy of manganese in steel manufacture with a view to reducing the necessity for importation of manganese ore, thus releasing ships for other purposes. , The section on electric welding has accomplished valuable results in the development of electric welding for ships, a new branch of industry of very great promise.

Roughly, a crack in a casting may be considered, for the moment, to be due to fracture of the alloy resulting from the stress set up by the contraction in volume on passing from the liquid to the solid state. Cracks may be external or surface, internal or deep-seated, or incipient or so-called strain cracks. Draws may appear as depressions, unevenness, and "pinching in" of the surface of a casting. Roughly, draws are due to contraction in volume and are governed largely by the same factors as cracks. A casting may be cracked, however, without being drawn. Shrinkage is a foundry term and refers to the contractio~l in volume of a metal or alloy on passing from the liquid to the solid state. Patternmaker's shrinkage is the total contraction in volume (including liquid, solidification, and solid shrinkage) that occurs when an alloy is poured into a mold. The contraction in volume of aluminum is one of the principal factors affecting the occurrence of cracks, as will be shown later, and the question of shrinkage and its control requires careful study in any treatment of cracking in castings. In the case of sand and die castings, cracks have been attributed to a number of causes, but in the case of most light aluminum alloys, they are due to the large contraction in volume on freezing and the lack of its regulation or control. The most important factors are: (1) Contraction in volume; (2) composition of alloy; (3) quality of melting charge; (4) design of casting; (5) method of molding; (6) hardness of ramming; (7) method of gating; (8) hardness and characteristics of cores; (9) chills; (10) risers; (11) melting temperatures; (12) furnace used for melting; (13) pouring temperatures; (14) inclusions in alloys; (15) hot shortness of alloys; and (16) physical properties of alloys at high temperatures. Of these, the first, second, third, and eleventh to sixteenth involve ascertainable metallurgical facts; the remainder are largely matters of opinion, judgment, and technical knowledge of men experienced in the production of castings.

Many basic engineering principles of all four phases of mining operations, namely, prospecting, exploration, development, and exploitation, can be analyzed better in terms of quantitative geology. Geological data from both field and laboratory will also complement scientific methods now being developed. THE geological data emphasized so successfully in prospecting for new deposits, that is, structural controls, strength of solutions, and type of mineralization, are basically those required for successful exploitation. In the mining of newly discovered deposits the most economical methods should be employed as early as possible to keep the overall cost per unit produced at a minimum and to permit maximum extraction of valuable minerals. A crucial question is: How can geological data be translated into useful quantitative results which will aid in achieving this end? H. E. McKinistry' has suggested that a solution may be reached in one of two ways: 1—the usual approach, use of judgment based on experience; or 2—mathematical calculations and tests on models, both subject to certain limitations. He also suggests that in addition to better use of geology more case data and theoretical data are needed on which to base sound judgment. Further research, therefore, is necessary. Perhaps in this field the emphasis should be on more specialization in mining methods and ground movement by men with thorough training in physics, engineering, geology, and underground mining. These specialists would be equipped to point out the most economical and scientific methods of exploitation. Selection of a stoping method is governed by the amount and type of support a deposit will require in the process of being mined, or by the possibility of employing the structure of the deposit to advantage in mining the ore by a caving method. In addition to these factors there are others which almost invariably influence the choice of an economical method of mining:' 1—strength of ore and wall rocks; 2—shape, horizontal area, volume, and regularity of the boundaries of the orebody, and thickness, dip and/or pitch of the deposit and individual ore shoots; 3—grade, distribution of minerals, and continuity of the ore within the boundaries of the deposit; 4—depth below surface and nature of the capping or overburden: and 5—position of the de- posit relative to surface improvements, drainage, and other mine openings. In the final analysis it is usually necessary to disregard the less important of these factors to satisfy the requirements of the more important. Because of the variation of geological conditions throughout and surrounding the deposit, no mining method will be everywhere ideally applicable to the conditions encountered in one ore deposit. The immediate problem is to interpret the above physical characteristics of deposits in terms of geological characteristics. Very few quantitative geological data are available on the factors related to a choice of mining methods. However, there are many descriptive data in mining and geological literature which collectively show how important an effect details of geology have upon all phases of mining operations. The following categories of basic mining methods were investigated to establish the geological factors that have affected their successful application: 1— open stopes with pillars; 2—sublevel stoping; 3— shrinkage stoping; 4—cut-and-fill stoping; 5— square-set mining; 6—top slicing and sublevel caving; and 7—block caving. It should be noted that the first five of these methods are listed in the order of increasing support requirements. Mines were selected as examples only where geological descriptions were complete enough to warrant their use. A study of the geological factors involved in mining operations led to a choice of the following classifications, employed in Table I: 1—structural type of orebody; 2—dimensions (geometry); 3— country rock (type); 4—faulting, folding, and fracturing; 5—alteration of ore and rock; 6—type of mineralization; and 7—geological factors determining mining method (summary). Of these factors only one yielded results that can be defined from available data in a quantitative manner, i.e., dimensions of the deposit. These are the most reliable guides that can be used in selection of suitable mining methods. They are, in general, the properties of geologic structure most difficult to evaluate by studies of models, pho-toelastic studies, and other laboratory methods, all of which are at present more limited in their applications than the geologic method. The problem of determining the optimum set of steam volumes and cycle lengths for a single well undergoing multicycle steam stimulation in order to maximize the cumulative discounted net income has been formulated mathematically and programmed for a digital computer. The mathematical fonnulation of the problem and the method for its solution are discussed in this paper. The oil production performance during each stimulation cycle was simulated by either a constant percentage or a harmonic decline. Using simple analytical expressions for production performance, the cumulative discounted net income and cumulative time of operation were related to the pertinent process and cost parameters and two principal process control variables (cycle length and steam injection volume). The discrete maximum principles was used to transform the equations for cumulative time of operation and cumulative discounted net income into a set of simultaneous equations. The simultaneous equations then were solved by trial and error on a digital computer to determine the set of cycle lengths and stem injection volumes that gives maximum cumulative discounted net income over the project life. INTRODUCTION Steam stimulation is a process for improving the oil recovery rate from wells producing high-viscosity crudes. The process is applied on an individual well basis and is executed in a series of cycles, each consisting of three phases: steam injection, soaking (steam condensation), and production. Significant increases in production rate following the stimulation operation result from heating the reservoir around the wellbore. As heat is removed with produced fluids and dissipated into nonproductive formations, the production rate declines, usually to near the prestimulation value. Typical production responses are given in case histories reported by Owens and Suter,l and are depicted in Fig. 1. Duration of the production phase is equal to the time for the oil production rate to decline to some specified value and is called the cycle length. (Cycle length is defined as the producing portion of the cycle and does not include the downtime required for steam injection and soaking operations.) Termination of the production phase coincides with the start of steaming for the next cycle. The process is continued, cycle by cycle, until it becomes unprofitable. Models 2-4 have been developed to simulate behavior of a single well during one cycle of steam stimulation and have been used to investigate the effects of system and operating conditions on the production responses. However, these investigations have not shown how the models can be used to determine a most profitable set of operating conditions for a multicycle stimulation project. Perhaps these models are too complicated mathematically to be adapted readily to an optimization study. This paper presents a method for optimizing a multicycle steam stimulation project based on simple production performance models. First, the performance of a steam-stimulated well during each cycle was simulated by either a constant percentage or a harmonic decline model. Using these simple analytical expressions for production performance, the cumulative discounted net income (before tax) and cumulative time of operation for each cycle were related to the pertinent process and cost parameters and two process control variables—the cycle length and the steam injection volume. Finally, the profit function to be maximized was formed. The analogy between the above problem and problems of optimizing multistage decision processes that have been reported extensively in the chemical engineering literatures5-10 in recent years has led this investigation to the use of the discrete maximum principle.5-7 This principle was used to transform the equations for cumulative discounted net income and cumulative time of operation into a set of simultaneous equations characterizing the optimum operating conditions in terms of the two control variables. The practice of adding moderate quantities of nickel to a variety of bronzes has been employed by foundrymen for many years with several objects in view. In some instances it was desired to harden the alloy; in others it was to increase the fluidity or to improve the solidity of the castings, or to refine their grain. These important matters have been considered in detail by Pilling and Kihlgrenl and by numerous other workers cited by them, and with the exception of the first will not be considered in the present communication. The possibility of reducing the cost of bronze by replacing a portion of the tin with nickel received attention some years ago by Burgess and Woodward12 and, as will be shown later, offers attractive savings in cost under present conditions. The age-hardening characteristics of the nickel bronzes of appropriate compositions have been known for some time and were mentioned by Price, Grant and Phillips3 and discussed by Wise4 in connection with their paper. These matters are further considered in recent patents15 and are becoming of commercial importance in the production of high-strength castings. The equilibrium relations existing in the high-copper region of the copper-nickel-tin system have been carefully studied by Eash and Upthegrove,6 and in somewhat less detail by Veszelka.7 The observa-

ON Thursday, Oct. 9, oil men from far and wide gathered at Beaumont, Texas to participate in a three-day celebration of the fortieth anniversary of the completion of the famous Lucas gusher well at Spindletop field just south of Beaumont, and to pay tribute to Anthony F. Lucas, for whom the Lucas Medal of the A.I.M.E. is named. In the afternoon the gathered host drove to the site of the discovery well to dedicate a 58-ft. granite monu¬ment erected on the spot where the original derrick stood. Representatives of the A.I.M.E. took a prominent part in the dedication ceremonies, giving the two principal addresses of the afternoon's program. Everette DeGolyer, past President, paid a personal tribute to Capt. Lucas, as a pioneer producer, an engineer, and a friend and well wisher of all young engineers. He gave a splendid picture of the useful and full life of Capt. Lucas who always took a great interest in the activities of the Petroleum Division of the Institute, from its inception to the time of his death.

The advantages of the davk-field imaging technigure for detecting vevy small precipitates are also described. ALTHOUGH Kikuchi electron-diffraction patterns were first observed nearly 40 years ago,' little systematic application seems to have been made of them, until fairly recently during electron microscopy, when their usefulness in contrast experimen and for determining exact orientations8'9 has been pointed out. With the availability of gonio-metric specimen tilting stages it has now become possible to make much wider use of diffraction patterns, particularly the Kikuchi pattern, which is the main subject of this paper. The treatment presented here is not exhaustive but it is hoped that it will stimulate more use of Kikuchi patterns during electron-microscopy investigations. The Kikuchi pattern is formed as a result of Bragg diffraction of the inelastically scattered electrons produced during the interaction of the beam and thick specimens, The important feature of these patterns is that they give an accurate representation of the symmetry of the crystal being investigated, so that it is possible to identify crystal systems and even the Bravais lattice. This means that new structures, e.g., formed in phase transformations, may be identified during normal electron microscopy, so that Kikuchi-pattern analyses considerably extend the uses of the electron microscope. Recent work has also shown that dark-field images are more informative than bright-field images, particularly, for observing small precipitates. The second part of this paper discusses some applications and advantages of dark-field imaging in studies of two-phase systems. 1) DIFFRACTION PATTERNS 1.1) Spot Patterns. Electron-diffraction spot patterns have their limitations because of the importance of the form factor on the intensities and shape of the reciprocal lattice points. Because of the extension of these points into relrods, reflections are possible over a large angular range (+5 deg) and the patterns from thin regions can be complicated because second-layer relrods intersect the reflecting sphere. Spot patterns can thus give only an approximate idea of the crystallography unless the foil is tilted into exact orientation. In this case the spot pattern is symmetrical, with equal numbers of spots on the positive and negative zone directions about the origin. Such cases are necessary for structural analyses and have been used recently to determine the crystal structure of the ordered Ta64C phase." Exact orientation means that the plane of the reciprocal lattice lies exactly normal to the incident beam as shown in Fig. 1(b). It should be noted that in exact orientations the angle of reflection is less than the exact Bragg angle 9 so that the reciprocal lattice points lie to the outside of the sphere, Fig. 1(b). This deviation is denoted by the parameter s and in the usual convention4 s is negative for exact orientations and, of course, zero at the exact reflecting position shown in Fig. l(a). In order to avoid secondary reflections from thickness relrods it is advantageous to work in thicker regions of foils. Diffraction from thick regions may also produce Kikuchi patterns and as dis-

THE need for a clear understanding of the physical nature of the flow of gas-liquid mixtures in vertical pipes is ever becoming more apparent. This type of flow is encountered when gas and oil are produced from a well; when water is removed from gas wells with siphon lines and when liquids are elevated by means of air or gas lift. Although a number of investi-gators1-7 have published data on the flow of gas-liquid mixtures, in only a few cases has the experimental setup been devised to permit visual study. In the fields of heat transmission, such as the boiling of liquids and the study of the critical phenomena of the hydrocarbons, researchers have been able to throw additional light on heretofore unexplainable happen-ings through actual observation in glass apparatus. This investigation was therefore undertaken in order to obtain qualitative as well as quanti-tative results for air-water flow. EXPERIMENTAL APPARATUS AND PROCEDURE The flow column used in these tests was made of standard 2-in. pipe and was approximately 98 ft. in height. Pyrex observation sections 2 ft. long having the same internal diameter as the wrought-iron pipe were placed at 14-ft. intervals in the column. The bottom of the tube was cut off square and terminated in the mixing chamber. No perforated nipple or footpiece of any kind was used. To the top of the column was fastened a semicircular return bend having a 4-ft. radius. The flow column was supported by a standard cable-tool drilling derrick (Fig. 1) into which were built observation platforms at each Pyrex section.

For the past several years the policy of a large section of our mining industry in relation to our present bureaucratic form of government has become increasingly amusing, if not a little disgusting. In the past, mining men have always featured themselves the self-announced champions of free enterprise, and, generally, this conviction, was substantiated by their deeds. In recent years, however, a large group of the industry, while still expounding, from the front porch, the principles of free enterprise and a sound economy based upon the law of supply and demand, have gone around to the back door with palm extended, to join labor, farmers, bureaucrats, and other pressure groups to get their share of the take. The procurement of subsidies, bonuses, increased metal prices, and government assistance in a multitude of forms seems to have obscured from their thinking the welfare of the country as a whole and the sounder economic principles of a balanced budget and lower taxes. At the recent Colorado Mining Association convention in Denver, I. was alarmed to see just how far this specialinterest type of thinking has progressed within the mining industry. Government assistance to mining. was generally considered inadequate, and a flat bonus for any new mineral discovery was proposed. It was disquieting, too, to learn how far the federal alphabet agencies have entered into the mining industry and of the thousands of highly paid technical. men on the federal payroll required to man these numerous overlapping agencies and bureaus. Now all this is very fine, and some aspects of the federal give-away program can be very appealing to the unsuspecting in the mining industry as they have been to those in other groups. Some of these expensive programs may bring about a few dividends or even several new mines. But to this whole line of pump-priming reasoning there is one big disastrous fallacy.

Transverse dispersion has received considerably less treatment in the literature than has longitudinal dispersion. Different methods for determining transverse dispersion coefficients have been used in different investigations, and the results obtained have not been consistent enough to permit accurate generalizations as to the effect of various physical parameters on the magnitude of these coefficients. A numerical solution to the differential equation describing transverse dispersion in the absence of longitudinal dispersion was obtained to enable one to calculate the dispersion coefficient from experimental results. The more general dispersion equation including longitudinal dispersion also was solved numerically to give quantitative limits of a dimensionless group within which the assumption of negligible longitudinal dispersion is justified. Possible experimental procedures were examined, and one utilizing a cylindrical packed column was chosen for the determination of transverse dispersion coefficients. Values of these coefficients were determined for a system of two miscible organic fluids of equal density and viscosity, for two sizes of packing material over a wide range of flow rates in the laminar regime. The dispersion coefficient was found to decrease, for a constant value of the product of packing size and interstitial velocity, as the size of the packing material particles increased. INTRODUCTION Longitudinal dispersion has received extensive treatment in the literature, and consequently is better understood than its orthogonal counterpart, transverse dispersion. Many mathematical models of dispersion processes assume that transverse dispersion is rapid enough to damp out any radial** concentration gradients and therefore may be neglected. Laboratory and production results, however, indicate that this is a poor assumption.l,2 Various experimental procedures for determining transverse dispersion coefficients have been used in previous investigations, but the results have generally been expressed by similar correlations. The transverse dispersion coefficients obtained, however, have often varied considerably for given values of the correlation parameters. We feel that further experimental determinations of transverse dispersion coefficients will help alleviate some of the inconsistencies in these empirical correlations. One assumption implicit in all previous investigations is that of negligible longitudinal dispersion in the experimental system. An attempt to justify this assumption often is made using intuitive reasoning, but it is apparent that this reasoning must break down as the condition of zero flow rate is approached. A mathematical examination of the equations describing the system yields physical limits outside of which the assumption of negligible longitudinal dispersion is invalid. BACKGROUND In a porous medium, the "effective molecular diffusivity" De is less than the molecular diffusivity D measured in the absence of a porous medium, due to the tortuous path which a diffusing molecule must travel. Various authors3-5 have reported values of the ratio De/D in the range of 0.6 to 0.7. When there is fluid flow within the porous medium, mass transfer occurs by convective dispersion as well as by molecular diffusion. These are separate phenomena and can be treated as such on a microscopic scale. However, the mathematical complexity is such that only extremely simple geometries could be considered, and the results hardly would be applicable to the complex geometries existent in actual porous media.
