"The Westerose Leduc (D-3) pool, a Devonian reef reservoir situated in Central Alberta, Canada, has now been producing for over seven years. As a unit operation, the pool pro-vides an interesting example of the full exploitation of gravity segregation tendencies. The reef has a 238-foot oil column, underlain •by bottom water and over-lain by a substantial gas cap. The original hydrocarbons in place were 147.96 million STB oil and 94.4 MMMCF of Taw gas cap gas. Nine-teen producing wells on 80-acre spacing have been completed, most of which are highly productive. Gas injection operations return solution gas to the gas cap. A study of the rock and fluid properties of the pool show it to be conducive to production by gravity segregation at high rates. Monthly average producing rates have varied between 800 B/D and 8,000 B/D and have recently totalled 3,000 BID to 5,000 B /D. Recovery and performance predictions under partial pres-sure maintenance at 10,000 BID indicate an ultimate recovery of 66 per cent of the original oil in place. In the absence of pressure maintenance, recovery would be only slightly less."

"The Cinola gold deposit in the northern Queen Charlotte Islands, British Columbia, is in a clastic sequence consisting of a lower shale of the Late Cretaceous Haida Formation and an overlying interbedded sequence of pebble conglomerate and coarse-grained sandstone of the Middle Miocene Skonun Formation. Both formations are intruded by a stock and dykes of porphyritic rhyolite. Two K-Ar model ages indicate mineralization and probably porphyritic-rhyolite intrusion at about 14 Ma (middle Miocene). A splay of the Sandspit fault system constitutes the footwall on the west of the deposit.The Cinola deposit can be classed as Carlin-type based on features such as (1) small particle size for gold, (2) Tertiary age of mineralization, (3) element abundances (e.g. high Hg), (4) dominantly argillic alteration, (5) a structural setting associated with major faults, (6) porosity of the host rock and (7) spatial and possibly genetic association with felsic intrusions. Gold is widespread and occurs mainly as grains of< 0.5 11-m in silicified sedimentary rock, and in quartz veins. Locally, coarse > 100 11-m particles of native gold occur in quartz veins, especially in strongly brecciated porphyritic-rhyolite. Ore minerals are mainly pyrite and marcasite, but include small amounts of chalcopyrite, sphalerite, galena, pyrrhotite, cinnabar, tiemannite (HgSe), rutile, magnetite, hematite and limonite in addition to native gold and electrum. No silver minerals have been found; silver was found in gold particles in amounts varying from 6.2 to 24.2 weight per cent. Alteration products are sericite, illite, kaolinite and chlorite, with abundant quartz of several stages.The host rocks, specifically the Skonun Formation, formed as an alluvial plain facies in a braided river system discharging into a marine basin in early Middle Miocene time. During the Middle Miocene, this sequence was intruded by a rhyolitic stock. The highly porous and permeable Miocene clastic sequence apparently provided an optimum setting for the development of a large geothermal system, the energy for which probably derived from the rhyolite stock. Mineral deposition followed a well-defined paragenesis, which, from oldest to youngest, is: (1) precipitation of iron sulphide minerals, and early quartz; (2) several stqges of quartz veins, with deposition of sphalerite succeeded by galena, chalcopyrite and visible gold. Micron-size gold was precipitated throughout these two stages of mineral deposition. Argillitization of the host rocks probably in part coincided with the mineralization and continued during cooling of the geothermal cell.In-situ reserves have been estimated at 41.1 million metric tons averaging 1.85 g Au/tonne using a cutoff grade of0.86 g Au/ tonne."

"After cooling and thickening, slurry from the second stage of the Hudbay zinc pressure leach circuit is filtered and washed on a belt filter prior to disposal. At times, the belt filter can be a bottleneck to the process. Preliminary studies show that filterability of the second-stage (HAL) autoclave leach residue can be indicated by particle size distribution of the filter feed and filtered residue cake. In particular, the Volume Weighted Mean Diameter, D[4,3], generated by a laser diffraction particle size analyzer from samples of HAL Filter feed, shows residues that filter more poorly have a lower Volume Weighted Mean Diameter than those that filter better. INTRODUCTIONHudbay produces cast zinc metal from blends of zinc concentrates at its metallurgical complex in Flin Flon, Manitoba, Canada, using Sherritt’s two-stage pressure leach process (Collins et al., 1994; Collins et al., 1995; Barth et al., 1998; Shairp et al., 2006). Pressure leaching replaced the original roastleach- electrowinning process in 1993.Filtration for the second-stage (HAL) leach residue originally consisted of two stages of vacuum drum filtration with intermediate cake repulping stirred tanks. As part of Hudbay’s 777 Project, with a designed increase in cast zinc production, a pre-feasibility study by SNC-Lavalin Inc. showed that losses of soluble zinc in the zinc pressure leach residue could be reduced by installing more efficient filtering and washing equipment. Based on laboratory performance, capital cost, installation ability, and potential operating cost savings, a 70 m2 Filtres Phillipe belt filter was chosen for the HAL residue, and commissioned in 2000/2001.When the HAL belt filter is performing well, there is no pooling of water on the surface, moisture content is relatively low, and subsequent analysis shows that water soluble zinc content is relatively low. There have been occasions where the filter has performed poorly with respect to the aforementioned parameters. The solubilities of calcium sulfate in HCl-CaC1z-H20 solutions up to 100°C were successfully modelled with the aid of OLI software after bringing proper modification to it. Modelling, more specifically, was carried out with the help of the Environmental Simulation Program, V-6.6.0.4 (www.olisystems.com). New model parameters were obtained by regressing the solubility data. A private databank was established by adding the newly defined model parameters and the calcium sulfate hemihydrate phase that is not included in the original OLI database. The McGill-modified OLI software was successfully applied not only to modelling solubilities but also the transformation of the various CaS04 phases, namely dihydrate, hemihydrate and anhydrite. In this paper, the modelling methodology will be discussed along with a comparison of the capabilities of the newly developed model vs the original OLI model.

Anglo American Corporation and the University of British Columbia have developed a medium-temperature oxygen pressure leaching process for the extraction of copper from chalcopyrite concentrates in an acid-sulphate system (AAC/UBC process). Leaching is performed at 150°C and surfactants are added to disperse molten elemental sulphur from the unreacted sulphide surface to prevent liquid sulphur occlusion. Copper extractions of over 95% and elemental sulphur yields of around 60% were observed over a 2-hour average residence time in a continuous pilot autoclave. Sporadic blockages occurring under continuous conditions were found to be caused by the accumulation of molten elemental sulphur mixed with unreacted sulphide mineral. A batch programme of experimentation was undertaken to establish the reason for this phenomenon. Batch experiments were conducted at low pulp densities on concentrate samples with narrow size distributions and at similar solution compositions to those experienced in the pilot autoclave. The overall rate of chalcopyrite oxidation was shown, under approximately constant solution composition, to be a strong function of the total available mineral surface area. Initial copper extraction rates followed the shrinking particle kinetic model under intrinsic surface control. Deviation from shrinking particle kinetics was however observed after a certain oxidation time. Secondary electron images identified small (typically less than 20 µm) sulphur conglomerates at the point of deviation, which &apos;collected&apos; unreacted chalcopyrite mineral particles and lowered the total mineral surface area available for oxidation. These sulphur clusters are thought to be the precursor for blockages experienced in the continuous pilot autoclave. These results emphasised the importance of fine grinding (P80 5-20 µm) and suggest that shorter residence times may minimise the formation of sulphur conglomerates in a continuous autoclave operating at medium temperature.

High-voltage direct -current transmission is a relatively new technology. The successful development and operation of AC/DC converters, capable of handling large power blocks, have made HVDC transmission generally accepted by utility engineer s and planners around the world. HVDC technology still has significant development potential and, as a result, it is expected that equipment costs will escalate at a substantially slower rate than those of conventional AC equipment. This development will also result in still more compact terminal stations. This paper reviews two modern HVDC installations. In Zaire in Africa. a 1700-km overhead DC line rated at 500 kv, will supply power to the copper mining district in the Shaba region. Another HVDC link connects Norway and Denmark through a submarine cable rated at 250 kv. This is the longest HVDC cable in the world, 127 km, and the water depth , maximum 530 m, is also much greater than for any previous similar cable. The reasons for selecting HVDC are discussed, and the design and layouts are presented.

Oxide dispersion strengthened (ODS) steel is being considered as an in-core structural material of future nuclear reactor systems because of its excellent creep and irradiation resistance on the basis of uniformly distributed nano-oxide particles with a high density, which is extremely stable at high temperature in a ferritic/martensitic matrix. Up to now, ODS steels have been intensively studied and developed to apply these materials to the in-core structural component of future nuclear systems. The primary activity is to develop high strength advanced ODS steel, fabrication technology for the structural components and key joining technology for the component fabrication. As a result, a Fe-10Cr-1Mo alloy with a superior creep resistance at high temperatures has been developed. An optimized fabrication process of this alloy system has been established through various process conditions in mechanical alloying, hot/cold working, and heat treatment processes. Joining technology for the ODS steel components is also being developed using solid-state welding such as magnetic pulse welding, friction stir welding and diffusion boding. These R&D activities will contribute to the realization of ODS materials for future nuclear reactor system applications.

Introduction Following the discovery of high-grade deposits of pitchblende in the Great Bear Lake area of the Northwest Territories by Mr. Gilbert LaBine in May, 1930, samples were submitted to the Mines Branch for examination and investigation as to suitable methods of treatment (1). The purpose of this paper is to present, briefly, the results of the investigative work conducted on the ores and an outline of the methods developed for the extraction of the radium content and recovery of the by-products. The paper is presented in two parts. Part I gives a review of the history of radium production and of the principal processes used in other countries. Part II describes the work and gives the results of the Mines Branch investigation. Part 1-Radium Production In Other Countries Historical Outline Uranium was discovered in 1789, and more than a century later Madame Curie, while studying the physical properties of this element, observed that the ore of uranium exhibited greater activity than the pure uranium com-pounds she had prepared and traced the cause to the presence of a new element which she named radium. Eventually, research proved radium to be a disintegration product of uranium, and always present in uranium ores.

"The paper discusses the accuracy of magnetic inspections of corroded hoist ropes. It quantifies the error of measured LMA (loss of metallic area) caused by presence in the rope of ferromagnetic products of corrosion. The paper concludes that in mining practice this error is not significant. Hoist Rope Corrosion and its AssessmentCorrosion is one of the most common forms of wire rope wear. For ropes working in wet mine shafts, ropes used by the fishing industry and, in general, ropes working in humid and chemically active environments, corrosion wear is usually the prime reason for rope discard. In most mining applications, rope corrosion is accompanied by fatigue cracking of wires, abrasion of external wires, internal nicking and other forms of wear.Quantification of corrosion damage in ropes using standard inspection procedures and examination methods is very difficult. Qualitative comparisons are sometimes used to describe the degree of rope corrosion to compensate for the lack of quantitative measures (SABS 0293, 1996). If available, the results of magnetic examinations of ropes may be of help in assessing their corrosion weakening.Magnetic rope examination requires that the rope first be magnetized. After that, the rope magnetic flux and the leakage flux along the rope are measured. The first is assumed to be directly proportional to rope metallic area (LMA) and its changes are indicative of the rope’s loss of breaking strength (LBS). Existence of the second indicates existence of local faults (LF) in the inspected rope. As the corrosion of rope results in development of corrosion cracks and in loss of rope metallic area, both the LF and the LMA should be used to quantify the level of rope corrosion. More specifically, the changes to the amplitude of the LF signal are considered to provide qualitative information on rope corrosion (Hansel et al., 1990), while those of the LMA signal are believed to provide quantitative information (Geller and Rousseau, 1990; Golosinski, 1996)."

Location and History The Sherritt Gordon mine is in northern Manitoba, one hundred miles north of The Pas and forty miles northeast of Flin Flon. The original discovery was made by a Cree indian, Philip Sherlett, in 1922. The claims lapsed in 1924 to be re-staked and optioned by various mining groups who carried out a certain amount of development work before relinquishing their options. In 1927 the present Company, Sherritt Gordon Mines, Limited, was formed to take over the property. Production commenced in 1931, but in the following year operations were suspended and it was not until 1937 that the prevailing price of copper pemitted resumption as an economic operation. The mine has operated continuously from that time to the present. Total production to the end of 1947 has been: Copper . . . . . . . . . 301,813 . .,345 pounds Zinc . . . . . . . . . . . 112,636 tons of concentrat (50% zinc) Gold . . . . . . . . . . 83,070 ounces Silver . . . . . . . . . 2,651,317 ounces General Geology The consolidated rocks in the vicinity of the mine, all of Precambrian age, are a series of gneisses and form a part of a great area of what are known as the Kisseynew gneisses. The Sherritt is the only known economic base-metal deposit to occur within the Kisseynew series. Extreme metamorphism has produced recrystallization that has imparted a decided igneous-like texture to many of the units. However, the gneisses are predominantly of sedimentary original although the most basic member, a hornblendegarnet gneiss, is considered to be an altered basic flow. Figure 1 illustrates the intricately folded structure and the succession of roe types. The footwall enclosing members are of sedimentary origin and represent quartzite and arkosic and greywacke derivatives. The contact footwall member is gneissic quartzite, a medium to coarse grained rock composed mainly of quartz with minor altered feldspar (orthoclase and plagioclase), muscovite, chloritized biotite, and magnetite. Most phases of this unit show varying degrees of granitization.

Introduction Lithium has been known since 1817, when it was discovered by the Swedish chemist, Arfvedson, while working in the laboratory of Berzelius on the chemical analysis of the mineral petalite, LiAl(Si205)2. Development of the chemistry of lithium proceeded slowly, following the early work of Davy, Gmelin, Bunsen, and Matthiessen. Approximately seventy years elapsed before lithium products assumed any commercial importance, and for a considerable period it was a&apos; very minor industry. Their chief early use seems to have been in medicine, and in the production of lithiated water. Other more important uses were gradually discovered, and the industry has had a slow but steady growth. Chemistry Lithium is classified as an alkali metal, along with sodium, potassium, rubidium, and cæsium. Like these, it is a silvery-white metal, which can be cut with a knife; it is harder than sodium, but softer than lead" It is remarkable in having a density of only 0.53 gram per cubic centimeter, which makes it the lightest metal. On ignition in air, it burns intensely to form chiefly lithium monoxide, Li2O. Like the other alkali metals, lithium reacts vigorously with water to form hydrogen and lithium hydroxide. The later is a strong base, and reacts with acids to form salts. The salts of lithium are in general analogous to those of the -other alkalies, but many of them have unique properties. For example, lithium chloride and bromide are extremely hygroscopic, and have a very high water solubility. Lithium fluoride, phosphate, and carbonate, on the other hand, are all relatively insoluble, unlike the corresponding sodium and potassium compounds. In this instance, lithium exhibits its frequent tendency to resemble the alkaline-earth group of elements (calcium, strontium, and barium). Many of the special and valuable properties of lithium are related to the extremely small size of the lithium ion.

This paper gives an account of the laboratory testing, plant testing and final inclusion of the two-stage sulphuric acid leaching process in the Milliken mill. Operational results for September, 1962, are presented, showing a uranium extraction of 95.5 per cent, with a saving of some 16 lbs. of 100 per cent H~S04 and some 9 lbs. of lime per ton milled. Methods for effecting further improvements in the process are indicated. HISTORY P RIOR to the incorporation of two-stage leaching, the process for the treatment of uranium ores at Milliken consisted of a single-stage sulphuric acid leach, followed by a solution recovery step involving washing in thickeners and two-stage filtration. The thickener overflow solution was subsequently concentrated and purified by ion exchange, and the uranium was recovered, by two-stage precipitation, as ammonium diuranate. It is the purpose of this paper to present an initial report on the construction and operation of the Fluo-Solid roaster at the property of Campbell Red Lake Mines, Ltd., Balmertown, Ontario. The roaster prepares for subsequent cyanidation the bulk flotation concentrate obtained from four hundred tons per day of gold ore. The mill flow-sheet &apos;includes jigging and amalgamation; flotation; cyanidation of flotation tailing; and roasting followed by cyanidaition of flotation concentrate plus amalgamation tailing. Overall mill recovery for the year 1950 was 90.2 per cent. Recovery possible by straight cyanidation of this ore would not exceed 80 per cent. The ore contains considerable arsenopyrite and pyrrhotite as well as pyrite, with lesser quantities of nickel, zinc, and copper minerals. The mineralization is for the most part extremely fine. The roaster first went into operation on August 7th, 1949, and at the end of 1950 it had roasted 10,916 tons of concentrate. The average recovery of gold from calcine during that period was 94.86 per cent in the primary stage of calcine cyanidation. The average assay of calcine residue from primary cyanidation for the entire period was 0.37 oz. per ton. Both laboratory tests and plant metallurgical balance calculations indicate a further recovery of approximately 10 per cent of this 0.37 oz. when the calcine residue is again cyanided, in the flotation tailing cyanidation circuit.

The Flash Smelting process is the most used production method for primary copper in the world. The basic idea of the Flash Smelting is to utilize the thermal value of sulfidic concentrates and melt the reaction product, in controlled conditions, without a need for external energy. This basic principle is utilized both in matte smelting and in Direct-to-Blister Flash Smelting Processes. In this paper, the behavior of normal (CuFeS2) concentrate of FSF-process is compared to the behavior of high grade feed material produced by Outokumpu Concentrate Upgrade Process with the aid of computational fluid dynamics (CPD) simulation using add-in subroutines developed by Outokumpu Technology. Results consist of the information concerning the behavior of the suspension, reaction efficiency and other parameters concerning the reactions of the feed material. It will be shown that, using the Upgrade Process, the throughput of copper from the Flash Furnace can be almost tripled.

"Introduction1N THE FALL of 1951, Peace River Allied Fort St. John No. 1 well was drilled in Lsd. 1, Section 9 Township 83, Range 18, West of the 6th Meridian, on the flats of the north side of Peace river, six miles southeast of the village of Fort St. John, B.C. During this operation, non-commercial shows gas in three zones and of oil in one zone were obtained during the drill-stem tests. Further geological study indicated that this well was on the southeastern edge of the Fort St. St. John structure.Pacific Fort St. John No. 4, drilled shortly afterwards, obtained possible commercial gas flows on drill-stem test in five zones and thus encouraged development of what has become Canada's largest multizone gas field.In general, the productive horizons in this area possess fair per-meabilities and high porosities, a combination which provides for high reserves and moderate productivities. Development to date has therefore stressed experimental techniques in drilling and completion practice to provide high deliverability wells.Data and information of a specific nature apply, in all cases, to the pools in the Fort St. John structure."
