A pilot mining robot, named MineRo-II, has been developed by KIOST during 2011-2012. The pilot scale was defined as 1/5 of the commercial mining capacity, 1.5 million dry-tons of nodules per year. The development purpose of MineRo-II is to use for the pilot mining test planned in 2015. MineRo-II was designed to be self-propelled by electric-hydraulic power and remotely operated in real-time from aboard. The main operational functions are crawling on seafloor, pick-up and crushing of nodules, discharging nodules out to buffer. Prior to MineRo-II, a test miner (MineRo-I) was developed in scale of 1/20th in 2007, and performed two times sea trials in 2009 and 2010. The results of performance tests were evaluated and utilized for the concept of MineRo-II. The design concept aimed at the expandability of the mining capacity based on modularity of configuration, maintenance simplicity and multiplicity of backup solution. The pilot-scale mining capacity is achieved by four pick-up modules of each 1m wide, which are moving forward with robot vehicle and sweep the nodules entering below the pick-up heads. Principally, by adding the pickup modules in lateral dimension the mining capacity may increase linearly. MineRo-II was designed and constructed in unit-module wise. The robot consists of two unit-modules having an identical mechanical and hydraulic configuration. The release of methane as free gas from the seafloor into the water-column well within the hydrate stability field is a natural process observed today in various ocean settings, such as the Cascadia margin, the Black Sea, the Guayamas Basin, and the Gulf of Mexico. The subsequent dissolution of gas bubbles into the water-column determines the vertical distribution of aqueous methane in the water-column and the upwards methane flux. Understanding this process not only is essential to describing the impact of natural deep-sea gas seepage, but also to assessing the hazard potential from blowouts and offshore exploitation activities, which are steadily expanding to greater ocean depths. Furthermore, the fate of methane from seeps contributes to scenarios of global change in the past and future involving the large scale destabilization of gas hydrates on a. We recently reported on the extended lifetime of methane bubbles within the hydrate stability field due to the formation of a hydrate skin (Rehder et al., 2002), based on in situ measurements of methane and argon bubble dissolution in the depth range 400 to 800 m. More recently, these observations were extended to depths from 900 to 1500 m. Single bubbles were injected from the ROV Ventana into an attached, back-illuminated, flow-through imaging box. The ascent of individual bubbles within the imaging box was recorded with Ventana?s HDTV camera system by piloting the 3-ton ROV upward, at the bubble rise velocity, for up to 400 m of vertical transit. Observed rise velocities were approximately 30cm/sec for all depths. Post-dive analysis of the HDTV video allowed detailed measurements of the bubble shrinking rates. The results of the earlier and new experiments lead to the following conclusions: (A) Methane bubbles released below the hydrate stability field showed markedly enhanced lifetimes, attributed to hydrate skin formation. The change in radius with time, dr/dt, varied from -7.5 micrometer/s above the hydrate stability field to about -1 micrometer/s at the deepest release depth. (B) Bubble lifetime within the hydrate stability field increased with distance in P-T space from the hydrate phase boundary. (C) Before hydrate skin nucleation, dr/dt for CH4 bubbles was comparable to dr/dt above the hydrate stability field. Although variable, the onset time for the hydrate skin effect to occur generally decreased with distance from the hydrate phase boundary (super-pressurization and super-cooling with respect to hydrate formation). (D) Even before the onset of the hydrate skin effect, a slight decrease of dr/dt with increasing depth was observed.

Hydrothermal fluids emanating from the seafloor rise as buoyant plumes, entraining ambient bottom sea water on the way up, until they reach density equilibrium and spread laterally in a direction that is governed by near-bottom currents. Plumes provide targets for focussing exploration for seafloor polymetallic sulfide deposits associated with active hydrothermal vents because their lateral and vertical extent is commonly orders of magnitude larger than the vent field from which they originate. Black smokers can inject on the order of 10,000 µg of particles per liter into a sea water column that normally contains only about 10 µg of particles per liter. The resulting plume should be characterized by increased particulate concentration with respect to background sea water and, therefore, provide a measurable gradient towards the source of venting. By utilizing the ability of particles to scatter light, we employed a real¬time, acoustically telemetered, nephelometer to measure this gradient, and mapped the size, shape and particle concentration of plumes at an active spreading center on the Southern Explorer Ridge at lat 49°45.6'N and long 130°16.2'W. Isopach and particle concentration data indicate the presence of two separate but overlapping plumes. The first is associated with a known vent field called Magic Mountain; the second with a new field called AGOR 171, 1.2

Although Mn, Fe, Cu, Ni, and Co have been the main interests since the ferromanganese nodules had been found, the other major components such as Si and Ca might be very important controlling factors in the processing due to the locally variable content. It is because of the fact that SiO2 and CaO are added to decrease the smelting temperature in the reduction-smelting method for manganese nodule processing. We have compiled the 707 chemical data for KODOS (Korea Deep Ocean Survey) ferromanganese nodules, which have been acquired from 1994 to 2001 and have been also standardized from 2001 to 2003 to avoid the discrepancy between the data sets. All 707 chemical data were used for the hierarchical cluster analysis to get the elemental correlations and also classified by the morphological types. The averages from each station were classified by the facies groups (Fig. 1) and the localities. Then all data are plotted on the SiO2-CaO-MnO phase diagram at 1773°K to compare with the best compositional area in the nodule smelting. Variations and distributions of SiO2 and CaO as well as those of Mn, Fe, Cu, Ni and Co in KODOS ferromanganese nodules were also reviewed. The mineral phases assigned by the cluster analysis are CFA (Carbonate Fluorapatite), Fe-oxide, Al-silicate, and Mn-oxide. MnO contents are generally higher than SiO2 contents in most of the morphological types except for the Is- and It-type. The Dt- and Tt-type show wider range and the E-types show high anomaly in their CaO contents. The stations which belong to facies group A and B show generally higher MnO contents than SiO2 contents, however, the stations of facies group C and D show wide range in their MnO and SiO2 contents.

Wherever hydrothermal fluids vent from the seafloor they will buoyantly rise (up to 100?s of meters) while mixing with seawater before attaining density equilibrium and dispersing laterally as neutrally buoyant plumes commonly 50 to several 100?s of meters in thickness and with order-of-magnitude or greater breadth. Although these plumes are typically >10,000-fold dilutions of vent fluids they can be reliably detected using sophisticated physical sensing and chemical techniques. Hence, hydrothermal plumes are spatially large targets compared to the actual sites of seafloor fluid discharge and resulting mineralization. For this reason plume prospecting techniques evolved over the past 20+ years have been widely used to systematically explore over 10% of the 60,000-km-long system of mid-ocean ridge (MOR) spreading centers for hydrothermal activity. While plume detection and gradient mapping can be used to home in on venting sites, plume chemical signatures provide additional insight regarding the nature of the fluids being discharged on the seafloor. We have applied the systematic plume prospecting techniques developed on MORs to the volcanic frontal arc setting as part of the NZAPLUME (New Zealand American PLUme Mapping Expedition) surveys. NZAPLUME I in March 1999 marked the first systematic reconnaissance of any intra-oceanic arc for submarine hydrothermal activity. Seven of thirteen previously mapped volcanoes that comprise a 260-km-long section of the southern Kermadec arc northeast of New Zealand were confirmed to be hydrothermally active. On average, one hydrothermally active volcano was found along each 35 km of arc front, a rate comparable to slow- and intermediate-rate spreading MORs. During NZAPLUME II in May 2002, thirteen previously unknown volcanoes and 8 satellite cones were first swath mapped for bathymetric detail and then surveyed using plume prospecting techniques. Three active venting sites were discovered along this 580 km-long arc section, bringing the total to 10, or 39% of 26 volcanoes surveyed overall, still an appreciable frequency rate for venting sites compared to MORs. While only chemical results for NZAPLUME I are available, the arc plumes characterized so far are chemically diverse and rich compared to MOR plumes. This diversity and enrichment was most evident as ultra-high concentrations of CO2, sulfur gases (St = SO2 + H2S), and Fe within plumes over several volcanoes. We suggest the fluids discharging from the seafloor at these sites are volcanic fluids, i.e., hybrid fluids comprised of MOR-like hydrothermal fluids evolved from seawater-rock reaction and fluids exsolved from magma as acid volatiles and liquid brines.

Data and information for this study were collected in June-July 2009 onboard the RV Yuzhmorgeologiya in the area covers about 7000 km2 in the eastern part of the CCFZ between 10º05? - 10º55?N and 119º25? ? 121º08?W. In accordance with the IOM research program the cruise was intend to acquire both geological and environmental data and information necessary for delineation of nodule deposits and also data for identification of the baseline of benthic ecosystem. Having implementation of its 15-year plan of work for exploration under the contract with ISA, current activities of IOM were focused on nodule fields within prime areas that could be mined in the future. Bottom photographs obtained by towed deep-sea vehicle NEPTUN along 6 profiles with common length about 300 km (Fig. 1). In total, about 11,500 digital photographs (what cover approximately 40,000 m2 of the ocean floor) were analyzed for assessment of nodule coverage and investigation of megafauna (animals, visible in photographs, the dimension more than 2 cm). The giant single-cell organisms Xenophyophorida were the most multiple animals in seabed photographs. Their number on the site area averaged 1187 ind/ha. However, the vertical camera position does not allow counting all xenophyophorids, therefore their valid number is represented 10 times more. According to all available information these protozoans play the relevant role in assemblage of deep-water environment, giving for other animal groups an [ ] additional source of nutrition and a substratum for settlement and attachment. The ophiuroids are found in assemblage with xenophyophorids in many cases, standing on a sediment at their base.

Present study was stemmed from the survey associated with deep-sea mining in the KODOS area between Clarion Fracture Zone and Clipperton Fracture Zone located in the North Pacific Ocean. The study area, which is located in the southeastern part of North Pacific gyre, is oligotrophic waters with low nutrients and chl-a concentrations below 1µg/l (MOMAF, 1996). This area is also characterized by divergence at 8°N and convergence at 6°N, which moved northward or southward in the range of a few kilometers with seasonal and climate changes. If the waste materials related to deep-sea mining are intruded into the surface waters continuously, unexpected effects to water column ecosystem are anticipated negatively. In order to assess the impact on the planktonic ecosystem, natural variation need to be distinguished from anthropogenically induced variation in terms of the abundance and species composition of plankton. In this study, mesoscale variation of zooplankton community was reported in relation to the physical conditions in the northeastern Pacific during 1998 and 1999. Temperature and salinity were determined using a CTD from surface to 200m depth in July 3-20, 1998 and in June 22-July 1, 1999. Zooplankton samples were collected from two different depths (0-50m, 50-200m) by vertical towing using an opening-closing net (100cm diameter and 300 µm mesh size). The samplings were carried out at every one degree between 5° and 12°N (1998), between 5° and 11°N (1999) along the meridional lines of 131°30´ W. The net was lowered to the depth of interest from a stationary research vessel and towed upward to collect zooplankton at a speed of 25~30 m per minute. Zooplankton samples were transferred to 1-l sampling bottles and immediately fixed with neutralized formalin into the final concentration of 5%. Considering the characteristics of zooplankton such as diurnal vertical migration, all samplings were done during the nighttime. The volume filtered by the net was calculated from the readings of flow meter (Hydro-Bios Model 438-115). Zooplankton were identified to the genus level and enumerated under a microscope. The abundance of zooplankton at each station was expressed as the numbers/100 m3.

Ferromanganese crust samples collected from Central Pacific sea-mount areas became of special interest after surprisingly high nobel metal contents have been analyzed. Hydrogenetic crust growth is controlled by the conditions of the oceanic water column. Thicker encrustations show two crust generations of different age ranges. The mean values of the chemical composition state that the older generation is richer in P, Ca, Ni, Cu, Zn, and Pt and depleted in Fe, Ti, Co, Al, and Si. The differences apparently indicate a distinct change of the geochemical environment. The Pt concentrations vary up to 1800 ppb and do not clearly correlate to one of the other metals. This might indicate a bond of multiple nature. Several mechanisms have been proposed to explain the Pt concentrations in ferromanganese samples. Our models consider seawater and cosmic spherules as responsible Pt sources. In seawater the main species of dissolved Pt probably exist as the doubly negatively charged tetrachloro-complex. A precipitation of Pt in seawater may take place if the chloro-complex is decomposed by reduction of pt2+ to pt0. On the other hand, the Mn02 precipitation is caused by an oxidation of Mn2+ which is supplied from the oxygen-minimum zone. Phosphate deposits on the southeastern U.S. coastal plain have long been the major force in world phosphate markets. World markets continue to grow, but the role of U.S. resources is rapidly declining. This situation results from a complex interaction of economic, political, and environmental factors. Causes for this ongoing erosion of the U. S. market include 1) escalating costs, 2) changes in land-use patterns, 3) environmental pressures oh conventional mining techniques; 4) exhaustion of shallow, high-grade resources in Florida, and 5) increased, low-cost production in other countries throughout the world. In fact, some agencies and commodity personnel predict that the U.S. will become a net phosphate importer early in the next century. If this projection is correct, the U.S. industry must look towards major changes in the near future in order to continue to compete in the world market. One possible change includes development and application of unconventional mining techniques to cheaply recover vast 'new' potential resources in areas with lower land-use pressures. These 'new' resources include 1) deep phosphorites within major sediment basins of the southeastern coastal plain and 2) subsurface phosphorites on the continental shelf and within the U.S. EEZ. These latter resources include extensive deposits in Onslow Bay, N.C.; broad regions offshore of Savannah, Ga. and Cape Canaveral, Fla.; and the central portion of the west Florida shelf. Marine Mining Inc. is currently exploring for marine alluvial gold and diamonds on a prospecting licence over a concession that covers 10,000 km2 of the continental shelf of Ghana. The boundaries of the concession extend from 0 30'W to 2 40'W, and between the shoreline and approximately the continental shelf edge north of 4 30'N. This concession extends from Kikam Beach in the west, to Senya Beraku in the east, a distance of approximately 240 km, and seaward an average of about 40 km. The concession is entirely underwater, with the exception of the estuaries of the Ankobra and Pra Rivers. Ghana has been a large source of alluvial gold, with historical production exceeding 25 million ounces. Southwestern Ghana is characterized by Precambrian rocks, which have been folded into a number of NE-SW trending synclines and anticlines. The most significant feature of the Birimian rocks is the presence of evenly spaced gold-bearing greenstone belts. They are 10-15 km wide, separated by about 90 km, separate basins filled by folded metasediments and granitoids. The rivers that enter the concession drain most of the exposed gold-bearing belts of Ghana. Given that approximately 2 km of erosion has taken place since the Mesozoic, and that gold mines on these belts boast proven reserves of over 55 million ounces, it is likely that large amounts of gold have been eroded out and carried to the sea. Coastal fractures, related to Precambrian structures reactivated during Mesozoic rifting, are responsible for the physiography of the coastal area, which consists of high-relief horsts separated by grabens that have been occupied and infilled by rivers or by finer sediments during times of elevated sea level. These fractures were loci of gold mineralization during the Precambrian, and are the source of alluvial gold in rivers confined by them.

In Expeditions 22 and 26 of China Ocean Survey (COS), Chinese and Russian scientists have Carried out a lot of work to search for hydrothermal sulfide in Southern Mid-Atlantic ridge (SMAR) 19°S, but come back empty-handed at last. The sulfide formation is closely related with the water-rock reactions which are controlled by the heat source. Melt inclusions are considered to have a unique compositions in melt to reflect the deep magma processes. Fortunately, we have found a large number of plagioclase hosted melt inclusions in SMAR19°S MORB. We have done experiments by re-homogenization and re-crystallization of these melt inclusions. During the re-homogenization experiments, the forming and melting processes of the olivine crystal inside the melt inclusions indicate that the homogeneous temperature of melt inclusions is 1190-1200??. During the recrystallization experiments, the different mineral phase assemblages show H2O inside the melt inclusions has hardly ever been loss, in addition Cr element and H2O molecule in SMAR19°S magma are heterogeneity at the time of melt inclusions trapping, and then the re-crystallization experiments provide a method to prove the microheterogeneity of basaltic magma system. Combining with the bulk rock data, this study shows that the melt inclusions are formed at a low-temperature and high-pressure condition. Eventually, this paper speculates that a low temperature heat source generated by a lower mantle potential temperature or/and a thick lithosphere indicated by the melt inclusions that not experienced the H2O loss process are beneath the SMAR19°S. The low temperature heat source transmits its heat to lithosphere through the cooling thermal boundary layer (CTBL), and the thick lithosphere can sufficiently absorb and consume the heat. Under the interaction between the heat source and lithosphere, the residue heat at the infiltration depth of sea water might have been no ability to satisfy the water-rock reactions temperature, therefore, the water-rock reaction should hardly ever appear, so the theoretical reaction zone would not exist beneath the SMAR19°S. Eventually, the interaction between thick lithosphere and the low-temperature heat source should be the dominant factor that makes SMAR19°S area have no condition to form the seafloor sulfide. However, this paper is based on melt inclusions only, in fact, melt inclusions are potential to have melt compositions produced by mineral dissolution, reaction and assimilation, and the volumes of melt inclusions are exceedingly small compared to the overall size of the magmatic systems, therefore, the extrapolation across many orders of magnitude is implicit when applying petrologic information obtained from inclusions to entire magmatic systems. Therefore, there should have other more research to verify the reliability of this conclusion.

A workshop to examine recovery systems for selected strategic and critical materials in the U.S. National Seabeds for the National Defense Stockpile in the 21st Century was held in Hawaii September 26-28, 1991, sponsored by the National Science Foundation and the Marine Mineral s Technology Center. The National Defense Stockpile of critical and strategic mineral commodities is presently in a deficit position of more than 7.5 billion dollars. Current domestic reserves of some commodities are limited or nonexistent. As defined by the U.S. Bureau of Mines, "Reserves are select resources . . . which at the time of classification, can be mined at a profit." Occurrences of these minerals have been discovered offshore within U.S. jurisdiction. If the technology could be developed to convert these resources into usable ore reserves, our dependence on foreign ores could be greatly reduced. Preliminary estimates indicate that a ten-year program of ore reserves definition, with appropriate technical developments to demonstrate a recovery system, could cost less than half the amount authorized for stockpile acquisition in FY 1989 alone.

"Significant uncertainty is associated with predicting future trends in deep-sea mining projects, especially when attempting to assess markets for associated products such as ships and collectors. In order to help European Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) to appraise the future market share of deep-sea mining equipment, a methodology was developed that allows to assess and predict equipment turnover. This study presents a market analysis, which evaluates the scale of the potential market for deep-sea mining equipment for seafloor manganese nodules (SMnN) and seafloor massive sulfides (SMS) based on six key drivers: (i) the worldwide deposit potential of SMnN and SMS deposits, (ii) the profitability of deep-sea mining projects, (iii) the metal market of seven associated metals (Cu, Zn, Au, Ag, Co, Ni, Mn), (iv) the current legal and environmental situation in the Area, (v) investment and maintenance costs, and (vi) a competitor analysis.Figures for the different key drivers are based on public reports and expert interviews. Large uncertainties as well as contrasting views and expectations resulted in different options (scenarios) for the future development of the deep-sea mining market. Several scenarios were developed and based on the future number of “mining projects” in the short-term (2022-2041) and the long-term (2042-2061). The number of such mining projects has been calculated based on the combined analysis of the different key drivers.In the scope of this study, the definition of a “mining project” is a deep-sea mining operation for SMnN or SMS lasting for 20 years. This operation includes the purchase of a set of deep-sea mining equipment consisting of a mining support vessel, a vertical transport system and the seafloor mining equipment, in line with other work within the EU FP7 project “Blue Mining” (GA No. 604500)."

Seafloor hydrothermal deposits are found worldwide at 700 to 3,600 meters below sea level [1] and contain base and precious metals like Cu, Pb, Zn, Au, and Ag. Some deposits were found in the Japanese exclusive economic zone and the commercial potential will depend on developments in mining and treatment costs of onshore mines. The ores require mineral processing to become concentrate for the various metal smelters and the authors are investigating mineral processing treatments of collected samples. The collected samples were classified into three components (chimney, mounds, and substrate rocks) and they were separated using a RETAC jig. The mound component contains zinc, lead, and copper minerals and further separation using flotation was investigated. This paper introduces results of the mineral processing tests using gravity separation and flotation.

The TAG and Broken Spur hydrothermal mounds are located on the Mid Atlantic Ridge (MAR) at 260N and 290N (respectively). Both were initially discovered by exploratory work from surface vessels and both have since been investigated by submersibles. The discovery of TAG resulted from a NOAA Trans-Atlantic Geotraverse (Rona et al. 1975) which fortuitously sampled low temperature materials on the east wall of the MAR rift valley and follow up operations (Rona et al. 1986) located the high temperature (365°C) mound some 5km to the west. In 1994, ODP deep sea drilling (Leg 158) at over 3,500 metres of water recovered core to a depth of 150 m below surface (Herzig et al. 1998) and for the first time allowed a geological interpretation of an active mound. The Broken Spur mound was accidentally discovered in 1993 when sulphide fragments were observed on a deep-sea towed camera system (Murton 1993). Later that year, exploratory submersible dives by Alvin located the hydrothermal field and the area was again explored by submersible in 1994 and 1997. Despite the amount of work carried out, our geological understanding of the MAR mounds is limited. Much effort has gone into measuring fluid chemistry whilst practical difficulties have inhibited good geological mapping of the sulphide areas. It is clear from both TAG and Broken Spur that the mounds are not necessarily located in the areas of highest heat potential. Indeed, TAG is some 2 km from the rift valley axis and has been operational for several tens of thousands of years. Hence, heat availability is not a major consideration and the most obvious control is a structural one. Mapping on Broken Spur indicates a series of isolated vent-sulphide areas, concentrated around a minor graben. Their distribution, size and nature all indicate that they are residual parts of a much larger sulphide body which was at least the size of the present TAG field. The evidence is for a cyclical pattern of mound growth -mass wasting? rejuvenation and the Broken Spur mound appears to be in the rejuvenation stage of the cycle. Mound cyclicity must be related to the supply of hot water which itself is a function of the connectivity of fracture systems. Hence, we return to the theme that the major controls in mound development are structural ones.

INTRODUCTION Ferromanganese (FeMn) crusts from Mendeleev Ridge, Chukchi Borderland, and Alpha Ridge, in the Amerasia Basin, Arctic Ocean, are similar based on morphology and chemical composition. The crusts are characterized by two- to four-layered stratigraphy. The chemical composition of the Arctic crusts differs significantly from hydrogenetic crusts from the North Pacific Prime Zone (PCZ; Hein et al., 2013), such as a high mean Fe/Mn ratio (2.6 versus 1.3) and low Si/Al ratio (1.8 versus 4.0), with lower Mn, Ca, Ti, P, Ba, Co, Cu, Ni, Pb, Sr, and Zn and higher Si, Al, Mg, As, Li, V, Sc, and Th. Based on Arctic FeMn crust mineralogy, chemical composition, and growth rates, crust formation was dominated by three processes: Precipitation of Fe-Mn (oxyhydr)oxides from ambient ocean water, sorption of metals by the Fe and Mn phases, and fluctuating but large inputs of terrigenous debris (Konstantinova et al., 2017; Hein et al., 2017). The Mn and Fe phases are hydrogenous and reflect bottom ocean-water chemistry and the aluminosilicate phase contains stable detrital minerals such as quartz, feldspars, zircon, monazite, and clay minerals. A precise method of studying the distribution of elements in FeMn crust phases is sequential leaching that dissolves four mineral phases of different stability step-by-step, in the following order: easily leachable phase, mostly bio-calcite; manganese oxides; iron oxyhydroxides; and residual aluminosilicate minerals (Koschinsky and Halbach, 1995). Twelve bulk crusts and crust layer samples obtained from six hydrogenous FeMn crusts were studied. Those crusts were collected during Russian (Arktika 2012) and USA (HLY0805, HLY0905, and HLY1202) research cruises from different parts of the Amerasia Basin (Mendeleev and Alpha Ridges, Chukchi Borderland). Samples were chosen for the sequential leaching experiments based on their morphology, location, and water depth. Hydrogenetic crust (D07-33) from the Tuvalu EEZ, central-west Pacific Ocean, was included in the experiment for comparison. Recovery during the four-step sequential leaching, with respect to the bulk analyses, was between 80% and 120%.

Mining is a waste intensive industry, oftentimes producing hundreds of kilograms of waste rock and tailings for every gram of metal recovered. Disposal of mine tailings is a major concern in most mining operations. In Southeast Alaska the steep terrain and high seismic hazard province limits cost effective opportunities for land disposal of tailings. The lack of infrastructure and long travel distances generally limits secondary utilization of tailings, as well. Since the mines are located close to tidewater, submarine tailings disposal is an attractive option for tailings management. At the present time the EPA will not issue a permit that authorized marine tailings disposal from any mining process that includes flotation technology. Upland disposal is the "Best available technology" and must be used. Consideration of submarine disposal is generally precluded because the tailings are contaminated with fluids from the flotation process. However, when developing technological solutions to minimize environmental disturbance, destruction, pollution, and risk, submarine tailings disposal deserves another evaluation. In Southeast Alaska it may be the "Best available technology" based on an assessment of all issues and concerns in these mining projects.

Two marine diamond deposits on concession 2b off Namaqualand along the South African Coast, have been systematically mined over the past year by the mv Moonstar. The two deposits, Smith?s Ulcer and Wedge Point Basin, are comparable in morphology, straddled the same water depths and have similar geology yet have given very different recoveries when compared to their respective grade models. These differences are best ascribed to the different style of mineralisation observed within the two deposits which has been directly controlled by the bedrock morphology. The smith?s Ulcer deposit has been formed in a metagreywacke bedrock displaying a strong north-south trending foliation which dips steeply to the west. Consequently the mineralisation is confined to narrow north-south linear trends with limited lateral extent (less than 5m) making extraction extremely difficult and somewhat variable. RE factors (recovered grade versus estimated grade) for this deposit range from 0.5 to 1.1. The Wedge Point Basin deposit is formed in a micaceous metaquartzite with a conjugate southwest northwest joint set, the southwest lineation being the more prominent, and structural foliation dipping gently to the west. The resultant style of mineralisation is confined to basinal features defined by topographical lows and is fairly lateral in extent (in order of 50m). Extraction of the mineralisation from this deposit is less arduous with recoveries more uniform, RE factors are frequently in the range 2 - 3. This style of mineralisation is more in line with what is to be expected from marine alluvial deposits, the nugget effect of diamond concentration being responsible for the high RE factor. The long narrow linear trends observed in Smith?s Ulcer demonstrably require a specialised approach in successfully sampling, modeling and ultimately mining.

Seafloor polymetallic sulphides are distributed in the EEZ of Japan, including substantial deposits in the Okinawa Trough and Izu-Bonin back-arc basin. In this new frontier, the successful development of these resources in Japan is expected to bring about a new domestic supply of mineral resources. The initial stages of this development are authorized by the Basic Plan on Ocean Policy, approved by the Japanese Cabinet on April 26, 2013, and the Plan for the Development of Marine Energy and Mineral Resources, formulated by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) on December 24, 2013. In 2008, the Japan Oil, Gas and Metals National Corporation (JOGMEC), commissioned by METI, began a survey and technological development programme for the development of the seafloor polymetallc sulphides (PMS) based on these Plans. The examination of four different fields: the evaluation of the amount of the resource, environmental assessment, mining technology, and processing & smelting technology, are concurrently promoted, aiming for commercialization as soon as possible. Based on the results of research for properties of geomorphology and marine environments of the target test sites in the Okinawa trough, which have been ongoing for several years, the preparation of the pilot lifting test included an in-situ excavation and crushing test conducted using test excavating and crushing systems.
