Underwind and overwind protection system concepts for mine hoist shafts were developed in conjunction with and for the Safety in Mines Research Advisory Committee (SIMRAC). End-of-wind operation of mine hoists is the most hazardous aspect of mine hoisting, carrying the highest risk of loss of life, injuries to workers and loss of production. Systems operating mechanically and with local actuation were developed. This was done in order to remove the increased risk associated with dependency on remote or external energy and information supply associated with most existing protection systems. The proposed underwind protection system concept absorbs the energy of motion of a conveyance overrunning the design lower limit of travel by drawing a metal strip through a set of rollers. This action causes dynamic cyclic plastic bending of the strip material that converts the kinetic and potential energy of the conveyance into strain energy of the metal. In the concept design a pair of cable slings attached to the strips catch the overrunning conveyance and transfer the retardation force. The proposed overwind protection system concept absorbs the energy of motion of a conveyance overrunning the design upper limit of travel by early detaching of the conveyance from the hoist cable. This detaching is carried out via an additional humble hook activation mechanism fitted at a sufficient height below the spectacle plate to allow the conveyance to retard to standstill under gravity before it would crash into the spectacle plate. The conveyance so brought to rest is prevented from falling by means of jack catches on the conveyance interacting with a rack (toothed profile) fitted on the guide rails in the retardation zone. Scale models (1:10 scale) of both protection systems were designed for conformance with established retardation standards. The retardation standards were limited by the requirement of passenger safety in retarding cages. The models were then built and tested in a 1:10 scale shaft model. Retardation performance close to the required levels was achieved. The retardation distance required should allow such systems to be retrofitted to most existing shafts. "A statistical analysis was done on the locations of 718 copper and 1 257 gold deposits in Abitibi. This area of about 20 000 square miles is one of the better-explored metal-producing areas of Canada.Patterns of clusters were studied by harmonic analysis. Several two-dimensional power spectra showed a number of distinct peaks. Sets of crest lines for patterns of interfering waves were constructed on the basis of these peaks. They pass through elongated clusters of deposits which are spaced more or less equally. For copper these periodic regularities in location may coincide with geological structures largely of Archean age (major fractures and sedimentary belts indicating synclinal structures). A directional relationship with swarms of diabase dykes of known ages and distinct attitudes indicates that the gold mineralization is, in part, younger than the copper mineralization."

PREFACE During the past year, the Council of the SAIMM undertook a major strategic-planning exercise to review all its current activities, and to redefine its scope and objectives in the light of changing circumstances. The following are the four main concerns that prompted Council to take stock of the situation. (1) Over the past five years, the SAIMM has become heavily involved in a variety of new activities. (There are many examples, of which the expansion in book publications and the establishment of physical metallurgy as a third major discipline with its own colloquia and schools are perhaps the most important.) While these new activities have considerably broadened the SAIMM's scope, they have resulted in a significant increase in the day-to-day workload of the President, Office Bearers, and Council members, and of the secretarial staff based at Kelvin House.

The wear of steel pipelines used for the transportation of backfill slurries is frequently regarded as an erosion problem only. An investigation was undertaken of the likely contribution to the total 'wear rate' made by corrosion. Use was made of a pipe flow loop with catholically protected specimens and corrosion inhibitors. Laboratory electrochemical tests utilizing a rotating-cylinder electrode were also conducted. The slurries used were classified tailings from two mines at a relative density of 1,7. The velocities were between 2 and 4,9 m/s. Substantial decreases in the wear rate of up to 80 per cent for one slurry and up to 67 per cent for the other were obtained with the use of corrosion control, showing that corrosion and, more importantly, interaction between erosion and corrosion, contribute a significant portion of the overall wear in steel pipelines

A control philosophy to be applied by Lonmin to maintain constant electrode immersion in their no. 1 circular smelting furnace is put forward. This control philosophy is facilitated though a combination of thermodynamic models used to predict the slag composition and empirical correlations to estimate the furnace geometric factor as well as the slag conductivity. The model can determine the operating resistance set point required in order to maintain a desired electrode immersion as a function of the feeds to the furnace, slag level and temperature. If modifying the resistance set point cannot maintain the desired immersion without moving out of the furnace P-V-I operating envelope, the model can be used to determine the amount of slag modifiers (silica or lime) required to shift the slag chemistry back into a region where the immersion can be controlled though resistance set point manipulation.

In 1978 the South African Coal Processing Society (SACPS), together with the Institute for Energy Studies of the Rand Afrikaans University, ran a school on coal processing. This was judged by both the organizers and the participants to have been extremely successful. As a result, it was decided to hold a second coal school in 1980. Superhardening is a new development by which a substantial increase in hardenability above the normal can be achieved in Iow-alloy steels. This paper concerns the reversible temper-embrittlement behaviour of steels with a superhardenability characteristic. Steels of type BS 530A40 with manganese modifications varying from 0,72 to 1,27 per cent in the superhardenable and conventional condition were compared. It was concluded that superhardenability in itself does not affect the susceptibility of a particular steel to temper embrittlement. However, an increase in manganese content, which was intended to increase the base hardenability of the steel, caused serious deterioration of the temper-embrittlement properties. As the use of manganese, chromium, and nickel to increase base hardenability results in an increase in susceptibility to temper embrittlement, it is suggested that this effect should be countered by the addition of 0,2 to 0,3 per cent molybdenum.

A rotating-cylinder electrode (RCE) was used to simulate the effect of flow velocity on pipe corrosion. A comparison is made between the electrochemical measurements obtained and those measured with a laboratory-scale flow loop. There is good general agreement if the speed of rotation of the RCE is adjusted to give the same value of mass transfer Coefficient as in the other system. Hence, it appears that the RCE is well suited to simulate actual flow conditions in pipes. The simultaneous effect of flow velocity and pH value on the corrosion rate of mild steel in a synthetic mine water was investigated. The i1nrease of corrosion rate was found to be more pronounced at lower pH values and, apart from a sharp increase below pH 4, the initial corrosion rate also increased at pH 7 and 6.

An extension of lognormal theory and its application to risk analysis models for new mining ventures by B. M. WAINSTEIN*, B.Sc., M.B.A. (Witwatersrand) (Visitor) The lognormal distribution, which remains the most popular distribution model for ore values, is investigated. The T-distribution, an integral part of this theory, is dependent on the sample size, n, and the unknown population parameter, o2, which cannot be integrated out. Hence, o2constitutes a nuisance parameter. In this study, the robustness of the T-distribution to changes in o2 is examined. It is found that the T-distribution is robust for 0,1 <= o2 >= 2,5, a domain covering most practical applications of the lognormal theory. By the use of o2 = 0,7, multiplier factors, which facilitate the computation of the confidence limits, are derived for a comprehensive set of confidence levels.

1. Book reviews ? Second International Conference on Hydrocyclones. Cranfield (Bedford, MK43 OAT, England), BHRA Fluid Engineering Centre, 1984. £33. Reviewer: R.P. King This volume contains the 28 papers presented at the Second International Conference on Hydrocyclones, which was held in Bath (England) in September 1984. The format and presentation of the papers are similar to those of the first volume in the series, and this volume con¬tinues the series as an authoritative account of much of the research work associated with hydrocyclones that is being undertaken throughout the world. The volume was produced from camera-ready copy supplied by the authors, but the quality of reproduction is very high and both text and figures are legible throughout the volume. Although most of the work reported deals with the hydrocyclone as a classification device, important sections are devoted to liquid-liquid separations and heavy¬medium separations.

A description is given of the extraction of pillars in a seam of coal which normally varies in thickness from 10 feet to 14 feet using conventional trackless mechanised units. By using the pocket and fender method of pillar extraction, the high capital cost of hydraulic supports is eliminated, and a volumetric extraction of 85% to 90% of the seam of coal is possible. This method of mining opens up the possibility of extracting vast tonnages of coal which hitherto would have been left in situ as pillars. The major benefits likely to accrue from this technique are seen as follows: 1. Greater volumetric extraction of the seam; 2. Longer panel life with less frequent transferring of sections; 3. Preservation of our natural resources. The authors deal with the history of this development at Springfield Colliery, discuss the present results and outline the future trends in the light of current experience.

A maximum of ten process streams (Merrill barren solutions) can be monitored sequentially with this on-line analyser, and gold concentrations as Iow as 0,005 mg/I can be determined. The design is a further development of the Tell-tale analyser constructed by the Corner House Laboratories during the period 1965-69. The barren solution is preconcentrated automatically by solvent extraction, the solvent being a solution of I per cent Aliquat 336 in di-isobutyl ketone. An aqueous-to-solvent ratio of 40: I is maintained. The extracted gold in the organic phase is determined by flame atomic absorption, each analysis taking approximately II minutes. The long-term reproducibility of the absorbance readings over a 24-hour period of repetitive sampling of four simulated process streams varied from 6,9 to 4,1 per cent relative standard deviation for gold concentrations of 0,0 I to 0,05 mg/I.

The typical service life for a long distance slurry pipeline is15 to 25 years. Determination of wear rate for a pipeline could have a high economic impact on the pipeline project. Wear is a combination of chemical corrosion and mechanical abrasion. The contribution of each factor has to be determined project by project. Normally, chemical corrosion dominates the pipe wear in fine slurry pipelines. These pipelines have been designed with a velocity between 1.5 m/s and 2.5 m/s. Solids are suspended with high homogeneity across the pipeline section. Bottom wear is not much greater than the top wear and not sensitive to velocity. The wear pattern in the pipeline transporting medium coarse solids, such as milled ore and tailings, is different. Wear concentrates on the bottom of pipeline and the outer bends, and is more sensitive to flow velocity. Wear distribution along the pipelines is similar.

This paper discusses the possible use of petrological data and proximate analyses in the prediction of cutting forces for coal. It is restricted to the development of univariate predictors based on data from thirteen collieries in five major Transvaal and Orange Free State coalfields and three coal provinces. The aim of the work was the identification and development of the best predictors of mean peak cutting force and Hardgrove grindability index from among the independent variables evaluated. The data, which were obtained by use of the penetrometer developed by the Chamber of Mines Research Organization, were processed according to the SPSS computer package. The analysis revealed reasonable correlations between the Hardgrove grindability index and (1) the volatiles and vitrinite content in the Vereeniging-Sasolburg and South Rand Coalfields, (2) the contents of vitrinite, vitrinite plus exinite, and minerals plus inertinite in the Eastern Transvaal Coalfield.

"Based on the complicated geological production conditions and abnormal strata behavior of the fully mechanized caving face No. 102 in the Xinyang Coal Mine, we analyze the breaking and forming process of distinguishing key block structures in close spaced coal seams. This analysis establishes an integrated mechanical model of these distinguishing structures. Furthermore, the horizontal force TAB generated by downward key blocks A and B is quantified, as is the Pressure PG exerted by key block B on caved gangue. Finally, the interaction mechanism is revealed. Analysis of the results using Mathematica reveal the following: 1. Both TAB and PG exhibit approximately inverse relationships to coal pillar width b; 2. TAB exhibits an approximately exponential relationship with mining height M of which the base is greater than 1; 3. PG exhibits an approximately arctangent relationship with mining height M. Combining these results with field observations, we conclude that the area in the vicinity of supports 100#–120# in the upper area of working face No. 102 is the likely zone of abnormal strata behavior. Thus, this area was classified as a key control area. Based on these results, the graded support control technique is proposed. Application of this technique in the field resulted in a reduction in the rate of hydraulic support system malfunction from 47% to 7% in the key control area. In addition, during times of periodic mining pressure, the roof caving height value never exceeded 0.3 m and the maximum spalling depth never exceeded 0.2 m. Overall, the results indicate that this new technique has markedly increased the stability of surrounding support rock material. IntroductionClose-spaced coal seams are widely distributed in China, and mining proceeds from the uppermost to the lowermost seam (Zhang et al., 2008). In the case of coal seams in close proximity, a particular set of risk factors becomes pertinent. These include disturbance of lower seams during the mining of overlying ones and the decrease in mechanical stability of lower coal seams following repeated movement of key blocks in main coal seam roofs. This inevitably results in behaviour such as heavy wall spalling and support damage to fully mechanized caving faces in lower-lying coal seams, which necessitates a significantly increase in the measures to support surrounding rock material (Zhang et al., 2010; Huang et al., 2013; Xie et al., 2013)."

"Coal fines produced during processing are difficult to dewater and result in a lower quality product and consequent lower value. A South African coal mine experiences severe difficulties with belt filter dewatering operations due to the presence of fines reporting from the thickener underflows. Plant 2 currently handles super-fine particles of size -34 µm and has low belt filter efficiency: excessive moisture retention lowers the product quality and strains downstream processing. It was necessary to determine an alternative method for dewatering these fines. Blending of fine material with coarser material was proposed as a solution. The effect of coal particle size and layering during ultrafines belt filter dewatering was evaluated using various blends of the fine Plant 2 material with coarser Plant 1 material. The best layering arrangement of the two materials and its optimum blend required to achieve reduced filter cake moisture content was determined in practise using a vacuum filter to simulate belt filtration. A blend of the two materials gave improved dewatering efficiency for the belt filters compared with that of the Plant 2 material alone. The best layering configuration was with Plant 2 material at the bottom and Plant 1 material on top. The optimum blend for industrial applications comprised 48% fines from Plant 2. IntroductionFines are produced during the processing of coal. It is estimated that 2 to 3% of run-ofmine coal reports to the ultrafine portion (-100 µm) (le Roux, 2005). The particle size of coal is inversely proportional to the amount of water adsorption, so smaller particles adsorb more moisture. Moisture removal requires either mechanical processes or thermal drying: mechanical processes are less expensive, but the fines still have high moisture retention. Discarding of fines leads to economic losses, so it is essential that they be dewatered so that they can then be sold as a product: fines need to be treated for both resource management and conservation reasons (Kenney, 1994). Removal of free surface moisture from ultrafine coal particles using a belt filter therefore remains a process that needs to be continuously improved. Ultrafine coal originating from a thickener underflow is known to be difficult to dewater owing to factors such as filter cloth blockage and moisture retention due to clogging. Mixing of finer and coarser materials has been proposed to deliver better dewatering efficiency and improved the quality of the recycled water (Kenney, 1994)."

The feed to the BCL concentrator is made of the ore from Phikwe No3 shaft, Selebi shaft and Selebi North shaft. The receiving bin of the concentrator has daily throughput of 7869mt live capacity of ore with feed grade from underground operation of 0.70%Ni, 0.75% Cu and 0.05% Co. The valuable minerals in the ore are Pentlandite, Chalcopyrite. Cobalt is present mainly in the solid solution in pentlandite. The common non-sulphides minerals are Amphibolites, quartz, micas, and Feldspar while pyrite and pyrrhotite are the major gangue sulphides. Pyrrhotite contains between 0.1% and 1% Ni in solid solution. From the mineralogical investigation, it was found that approximately 65% of the pentlandite in the ore occurs as exsolutions in the pyrrhotite and the grain sizes ranges from 8 to 38µm. about 25% of the nickel bearing pentlandite is medium grained and subhedral. This kind of pentlandite occurs along the cracks of pyrrhotite or as inclusions in pyrrhotite. The rest of pentlandite present is disseminated in the gangue matrix. Because of the fine occurrence of pentlandite, fine grinding was conducted in order to improve the recovery as well as the concentrate quality. A series of subsequent flotation test were performed in order to evaluate grinds of 35, 40, 45, 50, 60 and 80% passing 75µm. It was observed that ? The mass pull increased together with increasing fineness of grind ? Similar nickel recoveries were obtained at 35 and 40% passing 75µm but from 50% and 60% the grind was seen to adversely affect the nickel recovery. At 80% passing 75µm the recovery increased by small amount. ? Flotation kinetics showed higher initial nickel recoveries but these did not translate into higher final recoveries. ? Grinding finer than 80% passing 75µm yield very high grades of the concentrate in the first minute of the flotation test, and the grade is dramatically reduced in the fifth minute of the test. It was concluded that the current grind of approximately 48% passing 75µm is close to the optimum and no significant benefit were found to be associated with finer primary grinds.
