Coal plays an important role in the primary energy consumption of all over the world. In 2012, coal reached the highest share (29.9%) of global primary energy consumption since 1970. Coal burning mainly contributes to the emission of SO2, NOX, Hg and other impurities that jeopardize the future of environment. . Beneficiation before coal utilization is the most economical and effective technology for removing the hazardous material and gangue. In this paper, a novel process of dry beneficiation based on gas-solid two-phase flow composed of the compound dry cleaning separator (FGX), the air dense medium fluidized bed separator (ADMFB) and the vibrated fluidized bed with autogenous medium (VFB) is proposed. The main equipment and the flowsheet of the united system are described in detail. Separating principle of the FGX, ADMFB and VFB devices are all based on gas-solid two-phase flow. In FGX, gassolid suspension is composed of continuous gas flow and coal powder in feed coal. Large size coal (+6- 80mm) can be pre-separated effectively, and large size gangue can be removed effectively. Moreover, - 6mm particles fed serve as autogenous medium in FGX. The probable E value is 0.13 for -80 mm raw coal. In ADMFB, magnetic powder with -0.3 + 0.045 mm size fraction and coal powder in feed coal are compound medium solids. The separation density can be adjusted and controlled according to properties of raw coal. -50 + 6 mm raw coal can be cleaned efficiently, the probable E value is 0.05. In VFB, -6 + 1 mm coal can be separated. Generally, -80 mm raw coal can be cleaned efficiently in the united system based on gas-solid two-phase flow.

Due to the shortage of fresh water in the Middle East, seawater has been used as an alternative in flotation beneficiation. The flotation process requires about 7 m3 of water/mt ore. This article aims to study the effect of seawater cations and anions on the flotation. Natural pure francolite, calcite, dolomite and quartz were characterized by chemical, thermal and x-ray diffraction analyses, surface area, solubility and zeta potential. Synthetic seawater was prepared with the major chemical composition similar to natural seawater as follow; 2.45% NaCl, 0.52% MgCl2, 0.41% Na2SO4, 0.116% CaCl2 and 0.07% KCl. Also, natural seawater was used in application. The point zero of charge was estimated at pH 6.5, 7.8, 9.2 and 2.2 for francolite, calcite, dolomite and quartz, respectively. Calcium ions were released from the three minerals with Mg2+ and P2O5 3– released from dolomite and phosphate, respectively. The adsorption of collector, zeta-potential and floatability of pure minerals were studied. The effect of individual cations and anions predominant in seawater are studied on individual mineral or group. The troublesome Ca2+ and Mg2+ ions should be controlled by soda ash addition. Sodium silicate improved the selectivity of mineral mixtures and natural ore. At optimum conditions the calcareous phosphate ore yielded a concentrate of 34% P2O5, at 83% recovery with 0.61% MgO, from an ore assaying 25.3% P2O5 and 9.4% MgO. The overall flow-sheet of producing chromium (III) sulfate is described in this paper. The suitable conditions of each process such as sintering, leaching, aluminum removal, reduction, and de-composition conditions were experimentally studied. The results show it is reasonable to produce chromium (III) sulfate with the flow-sheet pointed out in this research work. The final product is Cr2(SO4)3 solution contained 150~250g/L Cr.

The intelligent recognizing and processing system for sinter ore mineragraphy make a great convenience of recognition and measurement. Specially, it?s critical important for a successful intelligent system to extract the minerals? feature accurately and sufficiently. Reflection index, as the crucial feature of mineral, is calculated by the theoretical calculating model of index based on the principle of imaging color models. In gray histogram of minerals? micrograph, the peaks? positions represent the information about mineral categories and contents. The relationships of different minerals? peak-positions in curve of gray histogram were got by using the peak-find model of gray histogram and calculating model of reflection index. These two models which can be regard as the method of feature extraction for minerals? photomicrograph also lay a good foundation for the artificial intelligent system of recognition and processing in sinter ore.

This paper describes a methodology used to develop a numerical model for the study of particulate suspension rheology. Initially, Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) models of different rheometer geometries were tested with both a Newtonian fluid (water), and a non-Newtonian Herschel-Bulkley slurry. Rheograms were reproduced from these models and compared to experimental values. Once a single-phase model had been validated, a coupled model combining CFD and the Discrete Element Method (DEM) was created. Two open source software packages were chosen. CFD is implemented using Open FOAM®, and DEM using LIGGGHTS. These two different codes were coupled via another program called CFDEM. This coupled model is currently capable of modeling spherical particles in a suspending liquid. DLVO forces have been included in some models to account for inter-particle forces due to the surface charge on the particles. The coupled model is currently being validated. The gold-ore Olympiada deposit is located within the Yenissei range (Krasnoyarsk Region, Russia). Primary sulphides ores are metasomatic changed rocks, mica-calcite-quartz structure with impurity amphiboles, chlorites, carbon, the rare thin grains of sulfides (up to 3%~5%) and native gold. The structures of ores are fine-grained, prevailing texture of ores - interspersed, vein-interspersed, band-interspersed, veinlet. The most important minerals in the deposit are: gold, arsenopyrite, pyrrhotite, antimonite, Sb-sulphosalt, quartz, muscovite, calcite, siderite, titanium minerals, chlorite and minor sulfides like chalcopyrite, galena, sphalerite, etc. A common problem in mineralogical studies applied to mineral processing (concentration, cyanidation, etc.) is the characterization of gold in ores and technological products. This paper discusses the behavior of minerals during technological process at operating factory in Olympiada Mine and gold distribution in the ores and products. For the mineralogical characterization of minerals ? combination of analytical techniques was used. Gold is encountered in the primary ores as free grains among rocks, growth with sulfides and nonmetallic minerals, inclusions in sulfides, sulphosalt, and nonmetallic minerals. The gold-sulphide ores of Olympiada deposit can be quite complicated for enrichment. With the purpose to increase the extraction of metal from concentrates by liberating the dispersed gold, forming inclusions in sul-fides, there is used technology of biooxidation of flotation concentrates in Olympiada Mine. Gold and the basic ore-forming minerals in the ores feed, sulphidic concentrates, biocakes, tailings of concentrates of flotation and products of hydrometallurgical leaching have been studied in the mineralogical research. During researches it is established that pyrrhotite was completely oxidized while arsenopyrite was oxidized almost completely in the bacterial oxidation process. Pyrite and antimony minerals behave similarly and were oxidized only partially. The main oxyhydroxides in the bacterial oxida-tion process are goethite, limonite and jarosite. The results of mineralogical researches showed reasons of losses of gold during hydrometallurgical enrichment.

A large amount of tailings in concentrators bring a series of problems to the environment and society. It is significant to reclaim the huge tailings and reuse them in industries in order to utilize mineral resources adequately. Primarily Lead-Zinc tailings with a certain quality of clay and feldspar were used to produce ceramic tiles by sintering method under specific technical conditions. By testing the properties of the ceramic tiles, it was shown that the amount of Lead-Zinc tailing used in the tiles was 60%~70%, and the mechanics properties were good. The optimum proportion parameters were Lead-Zinc tailing 60%, clay 35%, feldspar 5%, and the maximum flexural strength of tiles was up to 38.2MPa when it was sintered at 1090? for 30min. Its flexural strength, water absorption and thermal shock resistance reached the State Standard of GB/T4100.4. The product is suitable to be used in pavements and paths of parks.

Mineral processing is characterized by a constant adaptation to changing raw materials and market conditions. It is the link between the mined raw material and a marketable product. As a lot of high grade reserves are exploited, a steady deterioration of raw material quality can be observed. At the same time, the customers´ requirements for product purity and consistent quality increase. Indian iron ores are characteristically friable in nature that results in generation of sizeable quantity of fines (0-10mm) every year during various stages of mining and processing in the country with grade varying from 50-60% Fe(T) and are high in silica/alumina (Al2O3 5-8%). The fines generated cannot be directly used for iron making (blast furnace/DRI units) in the country due its physical and chemical properties; therefore, large portion of it gets exported or dumped. Value addition to iron ore fines through various activities such as beneficiation & palletization is the need of the hour, which will not only be economically beneficial to the mining sector in the long run but also generate value addition & employment opportunities. Incentives may be given for adopting latest technologies for direct use of fines in iron making by agglomeration of fines in the form of Pellets and Sinters, as fines forms considerable part of iron ore resources. Due to selective mining, although the iron content of the ore is high but the alumina(Al2O3) content in iron ore is also significantly high which demands for beneficiation as high alumina will create problem during iron making like higher fuel consumption, poor quality of slag produced, reduced productivity of B.F. all mineral has been engaged in hematite iron ore beneficiation with its gravity and magnetic separators since the mid-nineties. The delivery of jigs started for the upgrading of iron ore for its utilization in a Direct Reduction Plant in Australia. Since then, various other installations with jigs for lumps and fines as well as upstream separators for fines are in operation in Brazil, Australia, India and South Africa. Low grade run of mine and/or dump ores are being processed with alljig®-, allflux®- and gaustec®-WHIMS as the core equipment. The article describes the technology in use, the characteristics of various iron ores and the product qualities achieved. The data presented shows the specific advantages of jig application on iron ore upgrading due to the possible high gravity cuts and the easy and low cost operation. The allflux®- technology provides the big advantage of high capacities and a two-step process, both in a single unit. The gaustec®-wet high intensity magnetic separators offer high capacity in combination with unsurpassed process flexibility. Thiol collector mixtures are commonly used in the flotation of base metal sulfides and platinum-bearing ores. There are synergistic benefits claimed for these collector mixtures, with mixtures lowering total dosage requirements, improving coarse particle recovery and the rate of flotation. Some of the secondary collectors are known to have frothing effects. Therefore, a previous study aimed to decouple froth and pulp effects and considered only the bubble-particle attachments in the pulp. This was achieved through microflotation experiments, where various ratios of the ethyl and isobutyl chain lengths of xanthates, dithiocarbamates and dithiophosphates were used as collectors. Results from these experiments showed a marked increase in galena recovery using mixtures of xanthate with either dithiophosphate or dithiocarbamate. In the current study, the froth phase was introduced in the form of batch flotation studies to determine whether benefits noted during microflotation experiments would be carried through to a more realistic froth flotation scenario. The findings show that there was no significant difference in the flotation recovery between the best single collectors and mixtures of these collectors. In addition, single collectors that behaved poorly in microflotation experiments showed good flotation performance in the batch flotation experiments. The differences between the microflotation results and the batch flotation results are attributed to differences in particle froth stabilizing properties and/or differences in energy input between the microflotation and batch flotation cells. The feed ore is the concentrate of low intensity magnetic separation of pyrite tailings, containing TFe47.47%, S19.41% and SiOpyrrhotite. The exploratory tests showed that using a process of flotation followed by magnetic separation could respectively obtain a sulphur concentrate of S 31.08% with a recovery of 82.89%, and an iron concentrate of TFe 59.97% and S 9.52%with a recovery of 30.93%. The reason of iron concentrates with high sulphur grade was that the sulphur grade of flotation tailings was 7.03%. So enhanced flotation for pyrrhotite was investigated in this research. Results show that when the natural pH of ore pulp varied from 5.5 to 6.0, a reagent combination of FS, LH, and BJ displayed the optimum flotation performance for pyrrhotite. After comparisons made on different flotation processing, the previous flotation flow of ?one roughing, one cleaning, one scavenging system and middling reprocessing?, was found, among others, to have the best flotation effect, as the grade and recovery of sulphur concentrate were 31.08% and 82.89%, respectively, and sulphur content of the flotation tailings was 7.03%. The above results indicated it was difficult to raise further the effect of flotation desulphurization. The authors therefore suggested that oxidizing roast should be adopted following the magnetic process for the purpose of further desulphurization. Besides, flue gas containing SO2 8.25%. The conventional Canadian oil sand processing, the Clark Rowe process, is associated with many risks for the environment and high energy costs. To recover the bitumen from the oil sand (tar sand), large quantities of water have to be heated up and mixed with caustic soda and the oil sand. During this process, tailings with stabilized clay colloids are formed and dumped in tailings ponds. To avoid these disadvantages, a new, non-aqueous extraction process is to be established. Organic solvents are used instead of water and caustic soda to mobilize the bitumen from the sand-clay mixture. Pressure filtration, washing and steam pressure filtration are part of the new concept. A mixture of organic solvents and the oil sand is first pressure filtrated in a nutsch filter until a saturation level of one is obtained. After the cake has been formed, the filter cake is washed with organic solvent to flush the bitumen loaded solvent out of the cake. The following steam pressure filtration mechanically and thermally removes the remaining volatile components of the solvents from the filter cake. The filtrates from the pressure filtration, the washing phase and partly from steam pressure filtration are subsequently thermally treated to recover the organic solvents and obtain a higher bitumen concentration in the mixture. This mixture is then lead to an upgrader to win synthetic crude oil (SCO). The recovery of bitumen in the conventional hot water extraction process based on the Clark Rowe process can, in highly optimized plants, achieve between 88 and 92 %. Variation of oil sand properties leads to an actual range of between 80 and 90 % of bitumen recovery. With the alternative process based on organic solvents, the bitumen recovery exceeds the recovery of the conventional process by up to 16 percentage points. The composition of the two organic solvents in the first step of forming a suspension with the oil sand is important. The aromatic component is crucial for liberating and solving the asphaltenes, which tend to flocculate. The order of the two components of organic solvents is also important in the washing step. The paraffinic component is essential to achieve successful steam pressure filtration with respect to fast steam breakthrough and a filter cake free from organic compounds, as a result of its lower boiling point. In this study, the effect of adaptation of B.subtilis to sphalerite and galena with respect to the selective flotation of sphalerite from the sphalerite-galena synthetic mixture has been examined. The changes in the surface charge of the mineral and the bacterium, cell wall components and the profiles of secreted proteins are discussed. The flotation recovery of galena increases with the increase in the adaptation cycle of B.subtilis to sphalerite and galena, while the flotation recovery of sphalerite is independent of the adaptation cycle with either mineral. From the gel electrophoresis analysis, the protein profile for the unadapted and adapted cells is found to differ distinctly and this may be attributed to varying molecular weight fractions arising from different growth conditions. Electrokinetic measurements showed shifts in the iso-electric points of not only B.subtilis but also of the chosen minerals after adaptation. Additionally, the zeta potential of B.subtilis is found to become less negative after bacterial adaptation to the chosen sulfide minerals, while it showed an increase in the magnitude of surface negative charge after various enzymatic treatments. The change in the surface morphology and cell wall components such as phosphate, uronic acid and acetylated sugars of the bacterial species during adaptation to sphalerite and galena has been assessed. Selective flotation tests on a synthetic mixture of galena and sphalerite confirm that sphalerite can be preferentially floated from galena in the presence of the insoluble fraction of lysed B.subtilis cells initially adapted to sphalerite, with a high selectivity index. There are interactions between different minerals from the same ore, minerals and grinding media, and the electrochemical conditions present in the system. Grinding in steel rod and ball mills is a common practice in minerals processing. It is accepted, that the electrochemical interactions between the grinding media and minerals in a grinding mill, influence the corrosive wear of balls/rods and the surface properties of the ground minerals. A complex massive sulphide, Cu-Zn, TAKNAR, Iran, was used for all the experiments. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of grinding media (dry or wet) on the pulp chemistry and recovery of Cu and Zn in bulk concentrate. 1100 g of ore samples were milled, and mill products with d80=85 and 75 micron in wet and dry grinding methods were produced. Rougher bulk flotation experiments were performed with 550g ore samples, at 30% solids. SIPX in conjunction with Aero238 in 1:2 ratio (48 g/t), was used as mixed collector system, and copper sulphate (200g/t) and MIBC (20 g/t) were employed as sphalerite activator and frother. Lime and High purity Oxygen gas were used for adjusting pH at 8.5 and aeration. The results showed that, more positive pulp potentials were measured when the feed had been ground in a dry environment, and the difference in pulp potentials between the dry and wet ground feed was approximately 250 mV after the grinding stage. In dry grinding method, the recovery of Cu and Zn increased approximately 5 and 10%, respectively. In addition, in dry ground samples, the volume of middling and coarse particles (+100 micron) were more and Dry ground flotation feed had better agreed with using a mixture of collectors. "Spiral concentrators offer a cost effective way to separate valuable minerals from gangue by displacing lighter materials to the outside, and heavier materials to the inside of the spiral. The separation can be seen as visible concentrate bands and splitters are set at the bottom of the spiral to effectively split the ore into various densities. As there are typically many spirals in a concentrator plant, it becomes ineffective to continually adjust the splitter positions manually. Vermaak et al. (2008) proposed to use image recognition to detect the concentrate bands, thereafter, creating a model predicting the positions under certain input conditions. This model could then be used for optimisation and/or control of splitter position or band position. In contrast an online concentrate band detection system would provide real time concentrate band positions without losing accuracy due to model generalisation. These systems are usually expensive and time consuming to develop, due to a lot of centralised features required (image capturing, image processing and/or feedback to a controller). This study took advantage of the recently developed Raspberry Pi minicomputer to perform rapid prototyping of an online image processing sensor. The Raspberry Pi, and accompanying camera module, offers a portable Linux environment which can natively run the required image processing algorithms. Furthermore, extensive use of OpenCV was made to reduce development time, by relying on existing and proven algorithms to detect the concentrate bands. The Raspberry Pi also incorporates generic input/output ports which can be used in future work to provide the signal to a controller. In conclusion, the Raspberry Pi was successfully used to perform real time concentrate band position detection on a spiral concentrator. This solution is more general than an experimentally identified input-output model and may be used for control or optimisation studies in a wide array of spiral concentrators."

Thiosulfate leaching has been considered as the most promising alternative to cyanidation for the recovery of gold from ores. The chemistry of the ammonia-thiosulfate-copper system is complicated due to the simultaneous presence of complexing ligands such as ammonia and thiosulfate, the Cu(II)-CU(I) redox couple and the stability of thiosulfate in solution. However, acceptable gold leaching rates can be achieved by maintaining suitable concentrations of thiosulfate, ammonia, cop-per and oxygen in the leach solution. The leaching of gold in thiosulfate solution is an electrochemical reaction involving the oxidation of gold to gold thiosulfate and the reduction of Cu(II) to Cu(I). Previous studies have shown that the reaction rate of gold was much higher in the presence of am-monia thiosulfate than corresponding sodium thiosulfate. This indicates that cations may affect the anodic oxidation of gold in thiosulfate solution. The present study utilises electrochemical tech-niques to study the anodic oxidation of gold in thiosulfate medium in the presence of the different alkali metal and alkaline earth metal ions. It has been shown that the presence of the heavier cations such as potassium, calcium, and caesium enhance the oxidation of gold in thiosulfate solution. Leaching tests also indicated the improved recovery of gold from a sulfide ore with the addition of heavier cations. XPS results demonstrated that the binding energy for gold shifted to lower values in the presence of the heavier cations, indicating the ready formation of ion-pair with gold thiosulfate at the gold surface during adsorption.

The process of gold(I) adsorption on activated carbon (AC) from aqueous Na[Au(CN)2] and the state of the adsorbed gold cyanide complex on the adsorbent surface was investigated by photometry, XPS, XANES methods. By DFT method, quantum-chemical calculations were performed of the gold cyanide species on activated carbon surface. It was established that the binding of gold(I) with the surface of carbon involved several simultaneous processes governing the selective adsorption of gold(I) from the cyanide solutions.

It is known that the grinding condition has a major effect on the beneficiation characteristics of the minerals in subsequent processing, in particular, flotation. In the flotation process, particles surface and their condition can significantly influence collector adsorption and flotation performance. For example, particle shape and its surface roughness occurred during grinding may influence flotation characteristics of a specific ore. In fact, adsorption of different cationic and anionic species on mineral surfaces can be varied depending on the selected comminution procedure. The flotation performance of sulphide minerals can be detrimentally affected by the surface oxidation. The amount of surface oxidation may reduce the hydrophobicity of the mineral and makes adsorption of collectors less selective. Improved liberation may generally result in improved flotation recovery. However, this may result in finer grinding and slimes, and consequently, reduce the overall flotation recovery. This paper discusses the effect of wet and dry grinding on copper flotation of a complex Cu-Pb-Zn ore. Industrially, wet grinding is preferred due to its higher energy efficiency and owing to downstream processing requirements. In this study, series of flotation tests were conducted,and surface analysis (XPS and ToFSIMS) were performed after wet or dry grinding at two different P80 values. Mineralogical study was also conducted to investigate the liberation of valuable minerals after grinding. A higher copper flotation recovery was found for wet grinding. However, the copper recovery was increased by further grinding in both conditions (wet and dry). The results showed a higher collector adsorption on copper mineral surfaces after wet grinding. The surface analysis also revealed that the ore is slightly more oxidized after dry grinding probably due to higher temperature during dry grinding.

In view of the bad effect that Na-bentonite direct adsorb Pb2+-containing wastewater, this article has carried out two kinds modification treatment on Na-bentonite: the direct microwave radiation modification and microwave radiation organic modification by adding quaternary ammonium salt?cetyltrimethylammonium bromide,and analysis the main influencing factors of the modification effect. In static conditions, preparing Pb2+-containing wastewater as the research object, it has respectively studied the effects of Na-bentonite, microwave soil of direct microwave modification and microwave soil of organic modification on the process of adsorption Pb2+, and discusses the effects of pH value, temperature, adsorbent dosage, stirring time on the adsorption Pb2+ in wastewater by modified bentonite, at the same time it does a verification test to the practical Pb2+-containing wastewater. Comparison the effects of adsorption Pb2+ in wastewater, the results show that organic modified microwave bentonite is obviously better than direct microwave modified bentonite and Na-bentonite, and can make 6 mg/L Pb2+-containing wastewater meet the national discharge standards. Through scanning electron microscope, the result of test is that organic modified microwave bentonite is the cause of improving adsorption Pb2+ in wastewater. Preparing modified bentonite by microwave heating will not only shorten the response time, reduce energy consumption and work-load, but also modified effect is good.

With reference to the test report carried out by Guangzhou Nonferrous Metal Research Institute in 1983, the mineral process flow sheet of Yichun Tantalum-niobium mine is determined based on the characters of ores and successful experiences in light of the problems in the existing flowsheet: The ore is desilted before crushing; the primary slime is separately treated; the staged grinding process used while the fine slime is collectedly treated with tantalum and niobium as the main recoveries and lepidolite and feldspar powder as the secondary. The flowsheet is featured by comprehensive recovery, low investment and low energy cost.

"Traditional iron ore beneficiation plants using washing, screening, and jigging processes require large volumes of process water. Generated slime during processing, its disposal and impact on water usage, is an important concern for any mining company. The challenge today, during extracting iron ore, is how to dispose of slime such that it is contained and stable, while maximizing water reuse and minimizing surface footprint. The slime disposal methods are sensitive to the environment. Two major technologies presently being practiced for disposing the slime across the world are pressure filtration and paste thickening. In this perspective an attempt has been made to do comparative study between paste thickening and pressure filtration for selection of suitable slime disposable technology for Noamundi processing plant, Tata Steel. From the studies, it is evident that by adopting pressure filtration technique it was possible to produce filtered slime, whereas filtration, rate reduces significantly with the presence of finer fraction. Further , the greatest advantage of paste thickening is volume reduction of slime. By considering the technology limitation and comparative lab test work result, it is opined that combination of filtration and paste thickening technology is favorable in terms of capital and operating cost and slime >45 µ should be filtered and < 45 µ slime should go for paste thickening. The study and the results are presented in details.INTRODUCTION The beneficiation processes always end up with an enriched portion of desired mineral - “Concentrate” and an enriched portion of undesired minerals - “Tailing”. The proportion and nature of tailings generated in every beneficiation process differ from ore to ore and reflects the characteristics of the feed processed. The traditional method of tailing disposal in many mineral processing industries has been to dispose them as thickener underflow at around 35% solids. Though, it had certain advantages of transportation with ease but contribute to a greater volume occupied in the tailing dam. This sustained practice and failure to utilize the space available in the tailing dam judiciously endangered the mining industry. The tailing management has become the toughest task to the mining industry and most of the mines are running out of space for disposing the fresh tailings as many of these are at the verge of getting filled."
