The Mining Foundation of the Southwest will hold its 14th annual American Mining Hall of Fame awards banquet Saturday, Dec. 7, 1996 at the Leows Ventana Canyon Resort in Tucson, AZ. Each year, preceding the Arizona Conference of SME, the Mining Foundation sponsors this banquet to honor outstanding contributions by people in the mining industry. A permanent display of honoree vitae is located at the Arizona Historical Society in Tucson. Each year, one living award recipient and up to two honorees from mining’s history are chosen by the hall of fame committee and the board of governors of the Mining Foundation. In 1989, the foundation also established a medal of merit to recognize outstanding individual technical and professional contributions to the mining industry. And, in 1995, an award was created to recognize contributions made by companies and individuals in partnership with the mining industry. This year’s inductee is Richard de J. Osborne, chairman, president and chief executive officer of Asarco. He will also be the featured speaker at the banquet.

Hematite ore pellets require a much higher induration temperature than magnetite ore pellets because no exothermic heat is generated due to oxidation inside during induration-like magnetite pellets. Carbon is used as in situ heat source in hematite ore pellets which can reduce temperature requirement in the induration strand and hence decreases energy consumption. Many investigators have reported that a 0.8–1.25% addition of carbon in hematite pellets can improve the pellet properties also. However, to investigate the exact role of carbon in hematite pellets, its reaction mechanisms and kinetics study are required which have not been done so far. Therefore, the reaction mechanism and its kinetics have been studied in this investigation. It has been found that carbon reaction happens in pellets from the surface towards the center in a topochemical manner which is controlled by pore diffusion of gas, and its activation energy is around 52 k J mol− 1. It is also found that apart from in situ heat, carbon in hematite pellets enhances diffusion bonding which improves pellet properties. This study ascertains the exact role of carbon in hematite pellets which may help operators to use carbon effectively to reduce energy consumption and improve pellet properties.

"Methane gas explosions in a longwall coal mine can originate from in or around the gob and can seriously harm nearby workers and equipment. In order to fully understand the explosion flame and pressure wave propagation in the mine, it is important to investigate methane flame propagation in confined spaces as well as flame interaction with rock rubble and other mine structures. The latter can lead to enhanced turbulence causing high-speed deflagrations and/or detonations. Researchers ignited methane-air mixtures in horizontal, cylindrical reactors that contained inserts to simulate various gob characteristics. Rock surface topology and ignition location were investigated. Results show rock surface roughness increased fluid motion, thereby increasing methane flame front propagation velocity, overall pressure rise of the explosion, and time of pressure decay. Moving the point of ignition away from the open end of the reactor resulted in an increase in peak overpressure and an overall pressure rise of the explosion. Experiments were used to validate a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) combustion model that will be incorporated into a mine-scale explosion model to simulate and predict explosion hazards of large scale methane gas deflagrations in longwall coal mines. INTRODUCTION Coal mining is an integral part to our global society with coal-fired power plants providing about 40% of our global electricity [1]. A common method of extracting coal underground is by longwall mining. Researchers and investigative reports have found that explosive gas zones of methane-air mixtures can form along the longwall face and within the longwall gob, presenting an explosion risk to nearby workers and equipment [2]. In an explosion, the resulting flame and pressure wave presents a fatal traumatic injury hazard and can cause serious damage to equipment. In order to evaluate and mitigate the explosion risks in longwall coal mining, researchers at the Colorado School of Mines are developing a coupled CFD and combustion model of a longwall coal mine. The purpose of the model will be to better predict the explosion hazards under various mine conditions in order to build stronger prevention and mitigation strategies for miners."

The mining-induced failure of the coal seam floor is essential for water inrush. The mining disturbance to the floor, especially in the thick coal seam, is severe, and the water inrush risk is also higher than that in regular thick coal seam excavation. The superposition of many stresses, including in situ stress, mining-induced stress, and confined water pressure, must be considered in the prediction of the floor failure depth. This study adopted the elasticity analysis, FLAC3D numerical simulation, and on-site acoustic wave test comprehensively. The thick coal seam working face of the Zhong-Yu coal mine affected by confined water was selected as the engineering background to study the characteristics of the floor failure. Based on elastic foundation theory and the superposition principle, the mechanical model and the failure depth criterion of the floor were established, respectively. The distribution and evolution of mining-induced stress and the plastic zone in surrounding rock during the mining process are obtained by FLAC3D. In addition, the changes in the P-wave wave velocity in the floor before and after mining were compared and studied by the acoustic wave test method. The range of floor damage depth is determined on the basis of the above research.

Hydrogen peroxide production was measured during the grinding of a complex sulfide ore, and its oxidizing effect on solid surfaces was investigated using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) with diffuse reflectance attachment measurement. In turn, an attempt was made to correlate the formation of hydrogen peroxide, surface oxidation and sphalerite flotation. Additionally, in order to predict and minimize detrimental production problems due to the recycling of process water in sulfide ore processing, the effects of major components of calcium and sulfate species present in recycled process water and the effect of temperature on sphalerite flotation were investigated through bench-scale flotation tests using complex sulfide ores. The significance of process water species in flotation was studied using tap water, process water and simulated water containing calcium and sulfate ions. Formation of hydrogen peroxide was revealed during the grinding of the complex sulfide ore, and its formation was counteracted by diethylenetriamine (DETA). The FTIR spectrum of the pulp solid fraction showed varying degrees of oxidized surface species, which are related to the concentration of H2O2 analyzed in pulp liquid. Bench-scale flotation using two different complex sulfide ores showed that sphalerite recovery is better in process water than in tap water. Flotation results also indicated a varied recovery of sphalerite at different temperatures in either tap water or process water.

The 1889 Johnstown Flood, which killed 2,209 people, was a preventable disaster stemming from systemic decisionmaking failures. This paper applies modern Risk-Informed Decision Making (RIDM) frameworks to analyze the historical context and explore alternative outcomes through hypothetical multiverse scenarios. By reconstructing the risk landscape of the South Fork Dam, we demonstrate how structured hazard identification, risk assessment, and stakeholder communication could have mitigated or prevented the catastrophe. Three counterfactual scenarios—proactive maintenance, community engagement, and regulatory oversight—are evaluated to quantify potential lives saved and economic benefits. The study acknowledges historical barriers, including technological limitations, lack of governance, and socioeconomic disparities, which constrained risk-aware decisions in the 19th century. The analysis draws critical parallels to contemporary engineering challenges, particularly in tailings storage facility (TSF) management, where similar risk blind spots persist. The paper concludes that RIDM is not merely a technical tool but a governance imperative, essential for ethical and sustainable engineering practice. By learning from historical near-misses and failures, the modern engineering community can strengthen resilience and accountability. This work contributes to the growing body of retrospective risk analysis, offering a methodological framework for applying RIDM to historical disasters to inform future safety standards.

A team of researchers at the University of Kentucky, working under a USBM contract, developed over 65 simulation exercises for teaching and testing problem-solving and decision-making skills to miners and mining engineers. These skills involve both improving judgment and decision making in mine emergencies and enhancing the learning of real-world engineering design principles. The exercises are ideally suited for either latent image format or for computer-aided instruction. Exercise features are summarized, the structure and field testing of typical exercises described, and sample frames of individual exercises presented. Empirical data are summarized that describe the effectiveness of using these short, time-efficient performance tasks that simulate real problems and that provide immediate corrective feedback for teaching and testing critical skills. "The effect of applied DC potentials on the bioleaching of a chalcopyrite concentrate in the presence of Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans is discussed. Copper dissolution was the highest at an applied potential of +600mV (SCE), while all the dissolved copper got cathodically deposited at a negative potential of -600mV (SCE). Electrobioleaching at an applied potential of +600mV (SCE) was established at different pulp densities as a function of time. The effect of applied potentials and electrolytic currents on the activity and growth of bacterial cells was assessed. Preadaptation of bacterial cells to the concentrate slurry and electrolytic growth conditions significantly enhanced copper dissolution. Electrochemical and biochemical mechanisms involved in electrobioleaching are illustrated with respect to oxidative dissolution and biocatalysis of anodic oxidation. IntroductionIn recent years, the bioleaching of low-grade chalcopyrite ores as well as their flotation concentrates has been receiving increased attention. Use of mesophilic bacteria such as Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans in the bioleaching of chalcopyrite does not yield desirable copper extraction rates due to its easy passivation.Bioleaching of chalcopyrite using A. ferrooxidans has been reported to be very inefficient, and use of thermophilic bacteria at higher temperatures is recommended to improve its bioleaching rates. Bioleaching under imposed applied DC potentials or currents has been shown to enhance not only bioleaching kinetics but also to confer selectivity in mineral dissolution (Abhakumari, 1996; Chirpa Selvi and Natarajan, 1998; Natarajan, 1992a, b,c). Electrochemical principles governing electrobioleaching have been earlier illustrated (Jyothi et.al, 1989). The role of applied potentials on the activity and growth of A. ferrooxidans has also been studied (Natarajan, 1992b). Also, the electrochemical aspects of bioleaching of several sulfide minerals when present alone or in binary and ternary combinations have been reported (Jyothi et al., 1989). The electroleaching of copper-nickel concentrate (Natarajan et al., 1985) and electrobioleaching of sphalerite concentrates have already been studied (Selvi et al.,1998). However, it is possible to enhance the bioleaching rate of chalcopyrite in the presence of A. ferrooxidans under galvanic conditions in the presence of nobler minerals such as pyrite (Jyothi et al.,1989). Also, dissolution of chalcopyrite can be significantly enhanced under applied potential conditions. Ali Ahmadi and his coworkers recently studied the electrochemical bioleaching of chalcopyrite concentrates using moderate thermophiles (Ahmadi et al., 2010, 2011)."

It is the hope of the author that this paper, largely a compilation of observations and opinions built up over 20 years of experience in cold and remote areas may be of some help to others in designing better plants for the future in the north. The north is not as difficult to operate in as the better story tellers make it appear to be. ()n the other hand for 6 months of the year the cold is always there, and it seems to be waiting for someone to make a mistake. The simplest things can shut a multi-million dollar plant down at -4n' F with a 4n M.P.H, wind. It only takes one man door improperly latched to freeze up all the pumps on the bottom floor. Someone can poke a one inch hole in an outside wall in July and six months later while you are having Christmas dinner, a watchman will call up to report that the whole plant is flooded because the main water line just froze up and burst. Basic things to remember in plant design for cold and remote areas are: everything in these areas is more expensive due to long and difficult supply lines. Fuel is expensive and would be a major cost item even if it were not expensive, due to the extended periods of low temperatures. Building volumes should therefore he kept to an acceptable minimum. Service areas on the other hand must he adequate, because maintenance generally has to be conducted inside in a heated area. Supply vehicles for instance have to get completely inside the building to unload. If you try to unload a supply vehicle with the door open at -50° F, you won't be able to find the vehicle for fog and if you take more than 5 minutes half the water lines in the plant will freeze up. People in a remote area are expensive. The capital investment per employee may be as high as $30,000; with fringe benefits per annum costs of an employee will he as high as 812,000 per year regardless of basic wage rate. It

"Strategies to improve performance in mining production, maintenance and mineral processing operations have evolved over time from straightforward time studies of individual machine performance in the 1960s-1970s to more sophisticated and better focused statistical and financial tools that have emerged in the 1980s-1990s. These newer strategies fall under the broad descriptive category of operational excellence.Operational excellence is the term that embodies a number of performance evaluating strategies, the most popular and relevant to mining include the following:• Six sigma for addressing errors within mining or milling process and work standards.• Lean manufacturing to optimize organizational and operational performance through continuous improvement.There are other strategies that can be applied as well and this paper is not focused on a review of the pros and cons of any one strategy. However, the common threads in these strategies embody the expectation that expected results from these efforts can be quantified and that value will positively benefit the targeted work process, organizational unit, equipment deployment or time schedule when applied to it as part of continuous improvement efforts.The priority for proceeding with any one or more of these efforts is based on the calculated net value of the required resources to make the change versus the estimated value gained. The practice is identified as the value mapping process.This discussion summarizes the value mapping process methodology used at a mature uranium mine and mill in northern Canada to work through the myriad of potential improvement efforts available through the operational excellence process for continuous improvement."

Although the number of operating longwalls (approximately 100) has remained relatively constant over the last five years, longwall production levels have significantly increased and have in some cases more than doubled. As a result of the increase in production, control of respirable dust continues to be a problem. Therefore, the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), Pittsburgh Health Technology Center, Dust Division, initiated a study to investigate the availability and adequacy of technology for controlling dust on longwall mining operations. The study involved 23 longwall mining operations in three different Coal Mine Safety and Health Districts. Each operation was visited for a full shift. Respirable dust samples were collected on face personnel and at fixed locations along the face. Parameters in place to control dust were noted with special emphasis being placed on obtaining quantitative data relative to ventilation, headgate dust controls, cutting drum sprays, external machine sprays and cutting sequence. Attempts were made to correlate dust control parameters in place at the time of the visit to dust concentrations measured at the tail, on the tail shearer operator and to the average concentration of dust determined from averaging all the measurements from the occupations sampled. The parameters in place to control dust were also compared to the gamut of technology known to be available to control dust. This paper presents a discussion on the effectiveness of the parameters in place to control dust and on the availability of technology for the control of dust on longwall mining operations.

This paper details Keeler/ Dorr-Oliver's experience with the application of fluid bed combustion technology to the burning of coal-mining waste. The designs of two stage fluid bed combustors/dryers are demonstrated as useful in the drying of coal, slag and coke, using coal and coal refuse (gob) as fuel. Anthracite mining refuse (culm) is more than abundant in Northeastern Pennsylvania. After demonstration at Shamokin, Pennsylvania, a full commercial-sized fluid bed boiler using culm is used for district heating in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania. Limited research work has shown the utility of using fine coal as filter aid in sludge in¬cineration. With the rising avenues of the suitability of coal as auxiliary fuel in fluid bed sludge incineration, an expansion of these concepts combines the use of coal or coal refuse as filter aid and auxiliary fuel. "The use of recycled water in flotation has significant effects on flotation and selectivity because the recycled water contains many dissolved compounds and ions that alter the chemistry of the system. In this study, the effects of calcium, magnesium and sulfate, which are abundant components in recycled water, were investigated on galena, sphalerite and pyrite flotation using pure minerals and a complex sulfide ore by conducting bench-scale flotation, microflotation and zeta potential measurements. The bench-scale flotation tests indicated that higher recoveries of galena and sphalerite are obtained when water is recycled, due to higher concentrations of ions in recycled water. However, there was a critical ion concentration for galena recovery. The microflotation tests showed that galena recoveries at different pHs in recycled water are lower than in tap and distilled water. Pure sphalerite recoveries improved in recycled water in the bench-scale test with ore. Pure pyrite was depressed with recycled water as well. Zeta potentials became less negative with increased calcium and magnesium ion concentrations due to their adsorptions, and the presence of sulfate ions was seen to increase the negative charges of sphalerite and pyrite, conversely for galena. IntroductionWater is among the most important elements for mining and mineral processing. The distance to water sources is one of the major factors for mine site selection. The mining and mineral processing sector needs and consumes large quantities of water. In Chile in 2014, the copper mining sector alone consumed 12.7 m3/s fresh water for 1.189 tons of ore processing, and recycled 74 percent of the consumed water (Chilean Copper Commission, 2015). A plant that does not reuse or recycle any water will require 1.9 to 3.0 m3 of water per ton of ore processed (Gunson et al., 2012). Many stages of mineral processing, such as grinding, gravity concentration, dense medium separation, wet magnetic separation, flotation and hydrometallurgical operations, use large volumes of water (Schumann, Levay and Ametov, 2009).In mineral processing plants, the process water is recycled from the tailings dams, thickener overflows, and dewatering and filtration units. Wet concentration processes can require large quantities of water. Flotation, the most common process, typically takes place at 25 to 35 percent solids by mass. Most flotation plants practice at least some water reuse and recycled. Modern mines and mineral processing operations generally aim for zero water release (Levay, Smart and Skinner, 2001). In most cases, water quality has been found to affect flotation performance, and this interaction remains under investigation."

To many, petroleum exploration and successful geophysics , are partly synonomous, This is not because natural petroleum is usually concentrated as a liquid, nor certainly not because oil can be detected directly. The reason is Chat geophysics helps to at least better understand and sometimes, to even explain the essential geology involved. That groundwater is similarly a liquid with all but a few of its basic geologic relationships practically identical to petroleum, seems to have escaped many of those most interested and responsible for complete geo-hydrologic knowledge. The paramount need to use every means at our disposal for maintaining and expanding our crustal resources reserves are generally obvious, However, in view of the rapidly mounting requirements, continual re-emphasis is worthwhile.

Expansion of the Plum Island Wastewater Treatment Plant requires interconnection of three operating pump stations using only two existing 10-ft diameter shafts for access. These two existing shafts require additional support to allow access 130 feet below grade. Interconnection requires rehabilitation of an existing tunnel, excavation of two new tunnels, and abandonment of additional existing tunnels. Construction has discovered unexpected conditions at all three connection points. The CMAR contracting method has effectively accommodated project team discussion, value engineering decisions, and allocation of risk during preconstruction and construction phase services.

Two flat-lying trona seams 3-to 3.5-m thick, approximately 10 m apart, and at depths of 250 m are mined by room-and-pillar at OCI's Big Island Mine in Wyoming. Continuous miners and a yielding pillar system have contributed to improvements in resource recovery and productivity. Long-term stability with minimal subsidence is needed for a large portion of the mine beneath the Green River channel. This was investigated by computer modeling in 1990. Although results of the study indicated good long-term stability, recommendations were made for stress determinations to verify the model. Stress determinations made in 1997 showed pillar stresses 10% to 20% higher than the model stresses, and barrier pillar stresses 10% to 15% lower. This implies that higher panel stresses will be transmitted from the upper to the lower seam. A stability evaluation of the lower seam is planned before two-seam mining to assess entry widths and support requirements.

"Heap leaching is responsible for approximately 21 percent — 3.9 million metric tonnes — of copper production and 9 percent — 270 metric tonnes or 8.7 million ounces — of gold production worldwide. Given metal price assumptions of $2.25/lb for copper and $1,250/oz for gold, these portions of global production generate revenues of $19 billion and $11 billion, respectively. For heap leaching operations, small changes in metal extraction efficiency drive substantial changes in operating cash flow margins and affect project viability. Variances in actual metal production from budgetary forecast estimates can mean the difference between success (value creation) and failure (value destruction) for a heap leach project. Despite the importance of heap leaching for copper, gold and silver production worldwide, there are no clear standards or guidelines for developing heap leach metal production forecasts. There is considerable variation among copper and gold producers that apply heap leaching technology as to how such modeling and forecasting is applied at the operational level. There are a variety of different modeling approaches that can be utilized for this purpose. However, these vary in cost, complexity, time to implement, accuracy and credibility. This paper explores the options available for heap leach modeling, discusses the advantages and disadvantages of each approach, and provides guidelines/recommendations for an effective approach to modeling metal production at existing or planned heap leach operations. The paper also provides expected ranges of variation between actual and modeled production.Introduction and backgroundHeap leaching is fundamentally different from other methods used in the processing and extraction of gold, silver, and copper and other base metals. Considered globally, the technique represents a relatively modest portion of production compared with the primary technologies applied for copper and gold recovery. Approximately 21 percent of copper production is attributable to heap leaching techniques, as opposed to 79 percent by conventional crushing, milling, flotation, smelting and refining. For gold, about 9 percent of global production is obtained from heap leaching, compared with over 90 percent by various combinations of crushing, milling, gravity concentration, flotation and/or agitated cyanide leaching processes or, in the case of placer deposits, by direct gravity concentration and/or amalgamation. In cases where heap leaching is the primary source of metal production, the ability to accurately forecast metal production may be the difference between commercial success and failure for a project or operation. Heap leaching — of crushed or run-of-mine ore — is also commonly applied as a secondary process to treat lower-grade ores from a given deposit, such as at Chuquicamata in Chile, Cerro Verde in Peru and Bagdad in Arizona for copper extraction and at Twin Creeks and Carlin, both in Nevada, for gold. In such cases, heap leaching provides incremental revenue to supplement the primary process. Variances between actual and forecast metal production from heap leaching as a secondary process are typically tolerated and absorbed within the overall site metallurgical balance. In either case, accurate production modeling and forecasting creates significant value for heap leaching projects, is essential for managing production expectations — timing and volumes — and is likely to be a critical success factor for most heap leach projects."

Marine phosphorite deposits occur in Brazil, in the Bambui Group of late Precambrian or Early Cambrian age. The phosphorite is laminated, isoclinally folded, and is composed of black, elongated apatite pellets and quartz grains cemented by quartz and muscovite. Abundant, narrow quartz veinlets cut through the rock at right angles to the elongation direction of the pellets. The phosphorite is 0 to 80 meters thick and contains 5 to 30 percent P205. The deposit is elongate towards the northeast, and the central, thickest, and richest part is bounded by faults. Measured reserves are about 250 million tonnes that average about 13 percent P205. Preliminary testing indicates that grinding, scrubbing, and desliming will produce a material usable for fertilizer manufacture at a cost competitive with imported phosphate fertilizers.

When unwatered after more than 50 years of operation, the White Rock Tunnel of the Upper American River Project in the foothills of the Sierra Mountains exhibited failing rockbolts and ground falls. Repairs designed for the 5 mile-long, 24-foot horseshoe unlined hydropower tunnel included pattern rock bolts, shotcrete, and cleanout of the rock trap. The work, originally scheduled for two 3-month winter outages, was completed under challenging conditions in a single 4-month outage following a carefully sequenced work plan using robotic shotcrete and rockbolter machines. Flexibility, creative solutions, and collaboration by all parties were key to project success.
