A simple but comprehensive method has been developed for the simulation of a mechanical-drive dump truck that enables various parameters to be predicted as a function of time throughout its whole cycle. Uses of the simulation results are indicated with specific attention to environmental and operational or economic planning. The output of a sample run is presented. The method can be easily adapted for the investigation of a wide variety of mobile plants.

The high degree of mechanisation, which is mainly diesel-powered, has a significant effect on heat loads; heat output from this source often exceeds the heat flow from the surrounding rock. The extensive use of diesel-powered equipment also influences ventilation rates and minimum values are necessary to ensure that emissions of diesel exhaust are adequately diluted. Many Australian mines are in subtropical or tropical areas with high ambient wet- and dry-bulb temperatures on surface. This, coupled with the large amount of heat from mechanisation, usually means that refrigeration is required at much shallower depths. A secondary problem is associated with the definition of acceptable thermal environment conditions, which are sometimes based on the assumption of no air movement. This gives rise to very stringent thermal environment acceptance criteria, which, in some areas, would prohibit work on surface, let alone underground

The present state of knowledge on this subject may briefly be summarized as follows: (1) The copper content of the slag increases with the grade of the matte in contact with it; on the other hand, the proportion of copper lost decreases as the matte grade increases, because as a general rule a smaller volume of slag is produced when a high-grade matte is made. (2) The presence of CaO and MgO in the slag decreases the copper content of the slag, and the presence of ZnO increases it; the presence of A1203 seems to have little effect. The influence of the silicate degree is not yet clarified, but on theoretical grounds it seems likely that the copper content increases with the silicate degree of the slag. (3) High slag viscosity, high magnetite contents and low density difference between matte and slag all tend to increase the copper loss. The volume of slag is also an important factor. (4) The effect of bath temperature on the copper loss is not clear and further investigation of this point is needed. (5) It appears possible to recover a large part of the copper in the slag by adding FeS, CaS and other sulphides

The object of the paper is to describe the standards of quality that should be specified in ordering material ordinarily required for colliery use, and also the qualities most suitable for particular purposes. Tables are presented of British Standard tests for wrought iron grades A, B and C, Admiralty tests for iron in chain, the quality of material for wheels and axles, and the composition and mechanical properties of wrought iron, Armco (ingot) iron and drawbar-gear steel. The calcine consists principally of ZnO and ZnFe2O4, which occur as banded and porous grains, together with lesser amounts of Zn2SiO4, Zn-Fe-Pb silicate, sphalerite, quartz, PbSO4 and Fe2O3. Al is present in solid solution in most of the Fe-bearing phases and also as residual aluminosilicate minerals from the original concentrate. Si occurs mostly as Zn2SiO4, Zn-Fe-Pb silicate and as residual silicate minerals. As is commonly found in the ZnFe2O4, Fe2O3 and Zn-Fe-Pb silicate phases. The major As carrier may be calcium arsenate particles less than 1 micrometre in size which are dispersed throughout the calcine. The neutral leach residue consists mainly of ZnFe2O4 and precipitated masses of iron gel-silica gel. Lesser amounts of ZnO, Zn2SiO4, Zn-Fe-Pb silicate, PbSO4, sphalerite, Pb-K-jarosite and basic zinc sulphate are also present. Al occurs in minor concentrations in most of the Fe-bearing phases and in the Zn-Fe-Pb silicate. The residual aluminosilicates are also an important Al carrier. The major As carrier is the precipitated iron gel-silica gel phase, but some As is also present in the Zn-Fe-Pb silicate, ZnFe2O4 and Fe2O3 phases. Silicon is divided about equally between the iron gel-silica gel, Zn2SiO4, Zn-Fe-Pb silicate and residual silicate minerals. The weak acid leach residue is generally similar to the neutral leach residue except for its reduced content of ZnO and basic zinc sulphate.

One of the major factors restricting an increase in the productivity of a longwall mine is lower productivity obtained in a development panel. There has been a significant improvement in gate road development, particularly in mines requiring high density roof and rib bolting within 2 m of the face. Advance rates have increased from an average of 3 m to 5 m per shift in 1985 up to an average of 5 m to 10 m per shift in 1991. In mines at shallow depths with reasonably good conditions the increase has not been that significant. Advance rates have increased from an average of 7 m to 12 ni per shift in 1985 to an average of 12 m to 15 m per shift in 1991. Compared to the United States' (US) development rates, these are much lower. Extensive research work has been carried out to minimise cutting, wheeling, support setting time, and to optimise pillar length to achieve maximum advance rates. Pillar optimisation is very important in order to expedite adverse rates. This paper investigates various development rate technologies, both present and future, and optimises pillars to improve these dev elupment rates. Pillar optimisation is based upon time and motion studies conducted at mines in the Illawara region of New' South Wales, Australia, and the basic tools of arithmetic.

There are many points still obscure regarding the nature of coal-workers'- pneumokoniosis, but the interpretation of the disease has been greatly clarified in recent years. It is now known that exposure to fumes or gases or other conditions peculiar to coal-mining are not necessary factors in the production of pneumokoniosis. The same disease occurs in coal-trimmers working in the docks, and it is thus established that the inhaled dust is the primary factor. On the other hand, there is no completely satisfactory explanation of the distribution of the disease. Geological and petrological studies have not given an unequivocal explanation of the difference in incidence in different parts of the coalfield. It is an open question whether the quantity of dust inhaled is more important than its chemical composition. However, there is ample evidence from the medical side that elimination of dust and of tuberculosis from the environment of coal workers will be required to prevent pneumokoniosis. Much is being done with regard to elimination of dust, and a similar energetic action is required in regard to tuberculosis.

Mineral exploration carried out in Ireland since the mid-1950s has resulted in the discovery of ore deposits that are now in production atTynagh (Pb-Zn-Cu-Ag), Silvermines (Zn-Pb) and nearby Ballynoe (barite), and Gortdrum (Cu-Ag-Hg); a major Zn-Pb deposit at Navan that is now being drilled prior to development; potentially productive deposits at Keel (Zn-Cd-Pb), Ballinalack (Zn-Pb) and Aherlow (Cu-Ag); and a number of interesting prospects, including one of spodumene. Underground exploration of a formerly extensively mined copper deposit at Allihies has outlined new, albeit currently uneconomic, reserves at depth. The copper and pyrite deposits at Avoca have in recent years been re-explored and are now again being worked. Most Irish ore deposits are in the lower half of the Lower Carboniferous succession of limestones and subordinate shales and sandstones, and this stratigraphic zone is being most intensively explored at present. Other geological units under active exploration are Ordovician sediments-volcanics belts, Caledonian granites, and parts of the Old Red Sandstone and Dalradian series. Surface prospecting is made difficult in many places by glacial and other superficial deposits, including peat and alluvium. Geochemical prospecting methods have been outstandingly successful and primarily responsible for most new discoveries. Boulder hunting and outcrop prospecting have proved effective in detailed investigations of geochemically anomalous areas. Some parts of the country have been covered by three separate airborne geophysical surveys, albeit without success so far. The induced polarisation technique, the most widely used ground geophysical method, has contributed to several discoveries. The scope of application of electromagnetic surveys is more restricted than that of induced polarisation, but the method has been effective in a few cases and has contributed to the Tynagh discovery. To date, the resistivity and self-potential methods have found little application. Magnetic surveys are not applicable directly in the search for ore deposits of the various known types, but can be helpful in outlining geological structures in some areas. The gravity method has been used successfully in a survey over the Zn—Pb deposit at Navan ; it has also proved effective in trials over a blind sulphide deposit at Tynagh that cannot be detected with geoelectrical methods. Procedures are described for the application of risk analysis or probabilistic methods to mining geomechanics. The methods are widely applicable to existing mine design models. Detailed examples are given of plane slope failure and of pillar design based on displacement-discontinuity stress modelling and empirical strength assessment. The modelling techniques assessed are the Latin hypercube sampling method, incorporated in a spreadsheet environment, and the general point estimate method (GPEM), programmed in TurboBasic. An example GPEM program listing is included. Both methods are very convenient to use. Probabilistic acceptance criteria for slope stability after Priest and Brown are examined and alternatives are proposed where output distributions of factor of safety are approximately normal or lognormal and output distributions of safety margin are normal. The reliability index is included as a useful measure of variability with proposed acceptance criteria.

Discussion by A.C. Fitzgerald of the paper, published in Trans. IMM A, vol.104, 1995, p.B121-B135, is presented together with the authors' response. Fitzgerald points out a number of problems with the idea of mineralising fluids leaving no trace in the large volumes of rock traversed before depositing all minerals of value in a particular horizon or rock type with which the required isobaric or isothermic surface also coincides. He suggested that in the case of the Rooiberg tin deposits, the Lebowa Granites may be batholiths that reached the surface and were capped by sheets of their own volcanics. The authors agree that they had considered a possible syngenetic origin for the stratabound deposits, explain that no conclusive evidence for this could be found, discuss the relative ages of the sediments and volcanics of the Rooiberg Fragment and explain the role of its low-intensity deformation and flat dip in the coincidence of an isobaric-isothermic surface with the lithological stratification

Vapour pressures of sulphur have been measured over the temperature range 340-1039°C by means of boiling-point measurements, an internally heated pressure vessel being employed with argon as the pressure medium. The results are expressed satisfactorily by a four-term pressure-temperature relation. At the cited critical temperature of 1040°C the calculated critical pressure is 204 atm. From the pressure-temperature relation and available thermal data for the vapour, the approximate composition of the saturated vapour in terms of the various molecular species has been derived for the critical point

Stream-sediment sampling undertaken to define the regional geochemistry of northern Scotland is described with particular reference to the errors involved. The region is underlain essentially by Moine schists, Caledonian granites and Old Red Sandstone sediments, which are generally characterized by low geochemical relief. Factors in the secondary environment obscure the relationship between trace-metal concentrations in stream sediments and bedrock geology. Investigation of sampling and sample preparation methods indicates that the -100-mesh material is the optimum size fraction for the regional survey of this area: it provides adequate geochemical contrast: it reduced the incidence of spurious high values in the samples investigated and it is available in amounts which are adequate for all the analyses required. Grinding samples improves precision and reduces the preferential volatilisation of metals coprecipitated with hydrous manganese and iron oxides for the optical emission spectroscopic method used initially. A study of the dispersion of metals in the drainage system of an area of Pb-Ba-Mo mineralisation and an area of U-Pb mineralisation, respectively, indicates that a sampling interval of 1 per 2 km2 based on second- or third-order streams is adequate to define anomalous metal concentrations. Regional variation can also be represented on the same interval. Modifications to the sampling procedure to reduce the effects of the secondary environment are complicated by the primary association of Mn and Fe with mineralisation in the area. The ratio of analytical and sampling error to regional variance shows that procedural precision is adequate to prepare regional geochemical maps of northern Scotland, with the exception of Cr, Cu at low concentrations and Pb.

The two best known graphical methods for presenting and comparing comminution data are obtained by linearising the Gates-Gaudin-Schuhmann and the Rosin-Rammler size distribution equations. It is shown that the Gates-Gaudin-Schuhmann equation can cause excessive congestion in the 50 per cent oversize range and that, overall, the Rosin-Rammler is a better procedure. Examples are given

Mining operations on the Witwatersrand are conducted for the most part in rocks of highly quartzitic character. They comprise the following types: Conglomerates, grits, and quartzites, to which on the Far East Rand must be added fine-grained quartzitic shales and shales. In addition, vein quartz occurring as small veins, veinlets and fissure fillings, and igneous rocks forming dykes, must be mentioned, although they constitute only a small percentage of the rock broken. The following is an account of the character and mineralogical composition of the various types.

The slow-speed compressor is giving place to the high-speed type, with its greater economy of material and space; and, where very large units are required, the turbo-compressor is supplying the need. In the very large air-supply stations on the Rand, turbocompressor units of a capacity of 20,000 and even 50,000 cubic feet, requiring 4,000 to 13,000 horsepower, are quite a commercial proposition, and have proved a practical success. Air-compressors of this size are, however, very exceptional, and the high-speed reciprocating compressor is quite capable of dealing with the highest outputs so far required in this country and, in the hands of manufacturers experienced in the design of high-speed steam-engines, a very high standard of reliability and efficiency in operation is obtained. The so-called “high-speed” or more correctly quick-revolution type of compressor is now extensively used in mines and collieries; for the air-pressures required for power purposes in mining work, two-stage compression, with an intercooler between stages, is the design usually adopted in best practice. It is not the writer’s intention to describe a variety of high-speed air-compressors but to select as an example of this type of compressor the one with which he is most familiar, and which is probably more largely used than any other, namely, the double-acting two-cylinder two-crank type with automatic light-plate air-valves, and with the working parts lubricated on the forced-lubrication principle. Laboratory methods to find the mechanical properties of rock are inherently biased towards stronger strata, which best survive the sample preparation process. Geophysical techniques are not subject to such bias and may be used to predict mechanical properties rapidly and cheaply. Samples (151) were obtained from a borehole that had been comprehensively geophysically logged. The mechanical properties of the samples were established in the laboratory and correlated with the geophysical responses of the strata from which they came. The results indicate that, for homogeneous strata at least, it is possible to predict the unconfined compressive strength reasonably well from sonic travel time measurements made in the field. Predictions of static Young's modulus may also be made from this data source, but with a lesser degree of confidence. A multivariate regression equation is presented which relates down-hole sonic travel time to unconfined compressive strength, depth and the frequency of fractures in the rock mass. This equation may offer potential for the prediction of the mechanical rock properties of fractured and layered strata.

Several water treatment options have been studied and piloted. A process based on activity of sulphate reducing bacteria combines sulphate removal and heavy metal removal in one process step. The anaerobic bacteria reduce the sulphate to sulphide and consequently metal sulphides will precipitate. The final design for the commercial scale plant is described.

This paper describes the incipient heatings that occurred below ground in the High Main and Main seams at the mine between the years 1963 and 1966. The possible causes, effects and activities associated with such heatings are discussed in an attempt to establish the precautions necessary to minimize such occurrences. The assessment of as many "norms" as possible is made to enable the earliest detection and level of activity to be determined.

The wastage of timber in coal-mines that is caused by decay is very great; in fact, far greater in this country than is generally realized. Mr. E. W. Peters estimates that of the whole wastage of timber in mines in the United States of America, 50 per cent, is due to decay and insects; of this 50 per cent, an overwhelming part is due to decay. The most efficient methods of decreasing this grave loss can be devised only by co-operation of the mining engineer and the scientific expert, and it is partly in the hope of procuring such collaboration that this paper is written. It contains, therefore, a resume of our present knowledge of the decay of wood, and of the economic methods of checking this in mines; but, with a view to improving those methods, it also directs attention to the gaps in our knowledge and the means by which these can be filled by future investigation
