The Federal Bureau of Mines has developed a process for removing SO2 from stack gases. The process comprises absorption of SO2 in an. aqueous solution of sodium citrate, citric acid, and sodium thiosulfate, followed by reaction of the absorbed SO2 with H2S to precipitate sulfur and regenerate the citrate solution for recycle. A pilot plant was operated at The Bunker Hill Co. lead smelter in Kellogg, Idaho, to assess the feasibility of using the process for flue gas desulfurization. Nominal capacity of the pilot plant, which treated .tail gas from the lead smelter sintering furnace, was 1699 standard meters cubed per hour (15 degrees celsius) of 0.3- to 0.7-percent-SO2 gas yielding about 272 net kilograms of sulfur per day. The pilot plant was operated for about 4500 hours and produced more than 45 net tonnes of sulfur. The operation demonstrated that (1) more than 95 percent of the SO2 could be removed from the lead smelter sintering furnace tail gases, (2) regeneration of the citrate solution with H2S and precipitation of sulfur in conventional stirred vessels was readily controlled and highly efficient, (3) the precipitated sulfur could be continuously recovered as a 99.5-percent-pure product by kerosine flotation and melting, and (4) the 77- to 79-percent-H2S gas used for sulfur precipitation could be readily produced from pilot plant product sulfur, natural gas, and steam. Projected operating costs, including capital charges, for a citrate plant, installed at a 118 000-tonne-per-year lead smelter and treating 49 271 standard meters cubed per hour of lead smelter sintering furnace tail gas, are estimated to be $384 per tonne of sulfur.

The Bureau of Mines has conducted a laboratory and field corrosion test¬ing program to determine materials of construction for the leaching and gas-sparging crystallization environments of the clay-HC1 process in order to more fully utilize the alumina from domestically available kaolinitic clays. Laboratory tests were used to determine the corrosion rates of 22 metals and alloys by weight-loss measurements in these two environments of the process. The results of this laboratory study were used both to suggest metals and alloys for field testing and to determine the effect of the individual solution components on the corrosion behavior of the metals and alloys. Results from the field tests were used to recommend Ta, Ta-2.5W, and Ta-10W for con¬struction of the agitators for the leaching process. The metals and alloys recommended for construction of the gas-sparging crystallizer heat exchangers were Ta, Ta-2.5W, Ta-10W, Nb, Nb-1Zr, Nb-3Zr, Nb-28Ta-10W-1Zr, Nb-10Hf-1Ti, and Zr for the first stage and Ta, Ta-2.5W, Ta-10W, Nb-28Ta-10W-1Zr, Nb, Nb-10Hf-1Ti, and Zr for the second stage.

Measurements have been made of the internal energy of deformation in a Cu-A1 alloy and a Cu-Zn alloy as the deference between the work and the released heat. The method required the rapid compression of samples to reduce thermal interactions. The rate of energy storage is low initially but then becomes almost linear with strain. Both alloys stored about 60 cal per mole at a strain of 0.4 in the recrystallized condition. The fractional rate of storage increases at low strains reaching about 0.25 at a strain of 0.15 and then decreases slowly with increasing strains. As do pure metals, these alloys release appreciable energy immediately following deformation; in contrast with pure metals, however, the release continued for extended periods of time. This energy release is somewhat sensitive to the amount of deformation, the deformation temperature, and prior thermal & eatment. It is believed that this release is a composite of that observed in pure metals which has been attributed to dislocations and that due to the motion of vacancies which produces increased short-range order. IT is expected that changes brought about by deformation of a pure metal can be understood in terms of the three defects—dislocations, vacancies, and interstitials—along with the interactions possible between these defects. Frequently stacking faults are created and must also be considered. 1t is not immediately clear whether or not the stress fields which are created should be regarded as independent of dislocations. For alloys there is the important additional effect of atomic configuration, for example short-range order, which must also be considered and will, in general, interact with each of the above defects. While it is true that a complete understanding of pure metals is not yet possible, it would seem very valuable to establish the similarities and differences between pure metals and alloys. Such knowledge could contribute to the understanding of both. A study of the changes in internal energy resulting from deformation of two alloys is reported here. Although some information has been available for alloys almost as long as for pure metals, the volume of work has been substantially less. Sato' and Quinney and Taylor' were responsible for the earlier work, both using brass and annealing calorimetry. tizhnova' studied stored energy in Cu-Ni alloys by a method somewhat similar to the one reported here. Bever and his co-workers have made extensive studies of Au-Ag alloys4'5 and more recently CU-AU'U' using solution calorimetry. Clarebrough et a1.' have recently studied brass using annealing calorimetry. EXPERIMENTAL METHOD The present results were obtained by the rapid, adiabatic compression of a sample about 1/4 in, diam by 1/2 in. long between two tungsten carbide hammers. A vacuum provided thermal isolation and oil provided effective lubrication between the sample and hammers. The increase in internal energy is the difference between the mechanical energy and the heat liberated within the sample. The mechanical energy was determined from the velocity of the hammers (calculated from the height through which the hammers traveled) and was essentially constant for each deformation cycle. The heat was determined from the temperature increase of the sample which was measured by an embedded thermocouple. Specific heat data were calculated from Neumann's rule using tabulated data for pure metals.9 Since the fraction of the energy which is stored is large compared to that for pure metals, specific heat data of high accuracy are not required. Successive increments of deformation were carried out by repeating the procedure, the limit being determined mostly by the decreasing accuracy caused by the increasing corrections and the decreasing storage of energy. About five cycles were used to give a true strain of about 0.5 while the time interval between cycles was 1 to 2hr.

Tritiated water has been used as a tracer to follow the path of leach liquids as they flow through a copper-mine dump. Semipermeable layers, produced within the dump by compaction and "stratification" of deposized dump material, restrict the vertical movement of water. Knowledge of this restriction would aid in the optimization of the leaching process. The portion of the dump of particular interest was approximately 2,000 feet long, 800 feet wide, and 200 feet high. A total of 94 curies of tritiated water was injected into the dump at the rate of 650 gpm over a period of 39 hours. The leach liquid was sampled at natural surface outflows and through a series of wells, some drilled to the bottom of the dump and others to intermediate levels. More than 3,300 samples were analyzed, most by liquid scintillation counting, but a few hundred by gas counting. Data obtained permitted calculation of flow paths, recycle times, total fluid volume, and estimates of retention times in various portions of the dump.

THE study that is presented here was undertaken in order to condense information concerning comminution, and covering a great variety of conditions, into one or several rules which would be of use in the development of a systematic theory as well as in many directly practical ways. As the result of this work, the following conclusions appear justified 1. Rocks may be classified, from the point of view of comminution, into two general classes which are (a) structurally homogeneous, and (b) structurally heterogenous. Structurally homogeneous rocks are those in which fracture takes place through grains and grain boundaries alike; heterogeneous rocks are those in which fracture passes in preference through grain boundaries. 2. If a sized product composed of structurally homogeneous rock grains is crushed, a product results in which the relation between the percentage weight of grains of various sizes and these sizes themselves follows a definite law. This is not true of structurally heterogeneous rocks. 3. Ball milling with structurally homogeneous rocks, and under certain conditions, presents exceptions to this rule. 4. In ball milling with structurally homogeneous rocks, there exists a critical ratio of size of feed to size of balls, above which the machine operates essentially by surface wear, and below which it operates essentially by breaking across the body of the particle. 5. In ball milling, with structurally homogeneous rocks, and when the size of feed grains exceeds the critical size, the particles worn off are of a, substantially definite size which depends upon the ball size 6. In the case of a typical heterogeneous rock, such as Manhattan schist, particles are crushed in such a way that there is a greater proportion of grains of the size that is the average grain-size of the rock than there would be in that range of size with a structurally homogeneous rock. This has been found to be true with-all the crushers tested. 7. Different methods of crushing produce grains of different shapes.

"Pilot plant testwork on autogenous and semi-autogenous grinding was conducted at the Centre des Recherches Minérales du Québec (CRM) to investigate the effect of ball addition, solids concentration in the feed, specific energy consumption and feed size distribution.A mathematical model that incorporates breakage and surface mechanisms of loss of mass was developed to predict load size distribution of autogenous and semi-autogeneous mills. An empirical model was used to predict product size distribution of autogenous and semi-autogeneous mills.IntroductionAutogenous (AG) and semi-autogenous (SAG) grinding circuits offer potential capital and operating cost savings when compared with conventional grinding. Empirical relationships have been developed to calculate specific power consumption for SAG mills using pilot plant test results (Mular et al., 1989; Barrett and Allan, 1986). Empirical models can be obtained from plant practice data but are applicable only to the particular ore and set of operating conditions used in the model. Grinding mechanisms have to be taken into account in order to develop a model that can be applied to different ores and mills.In AG and SAG, the ore itself acts as grinding media, with the finer sizes being crushed by the coarser ones. Surface mechanisms of loss of mass, in which the inner core of the particle remains intact, also take place. In SAG milling, the effect of balls also has to be taken into account. The role of each one of these mechanisms changes with particle size and the model has to account for such changes."

The Bureau of Mines has undertaken an investigation to determine possible applications of acoustic energy at sonic and ultrasonic frequencies to improve ultimate recovery from oil reservoirs. A literature search was conducted to provide background information for initiating laboratory research. The purpose of the literature search was to review the uses that have been made of acoustic energy in the petroleum industry and to select procedures and techniques that could be applied to the solution of petroleum production problems. The characteristics (68)3 of ultrasonic energy make it potentially useful to a variety of industrial and experimental applications. Pulse techniques (99) are common in the testing of materials where inspection is accomplished by propagating an ultrasonic pulse through the material. Viscosity measurements (45) are made by interpreting changes in the absorption of sound as it is propagated through a flowing liquid. Cavitation phenomena (93) produced by high-intensity ultrasound in liquids have been used extensively in industrial cleaning, machining, impact grinding, and aluminum soldering operations.

The depletion of thicker coal reserves has resulted in the thinner seams being economically attractive. Surface protection against subsidence limits the extraction ratio to 50% for the room and pillar method as a "no subsidence condition". That rule was developed for pillars with smaller width/height ratio because seams mined at the time were commonly 6 feet thick. Over time pillar ribs deteriorate around the pillar perimeter and thus decrease the area of the pillar. Using 50% extraction as the no subsidence condition in the squat pillar category (below 42 in with w/h > 7) causes unnecessary losses of reserves because squat pillars are stronger. In this paper a method is presented for design of long-term pillars. Based on the analysis of pillar deterioration and field observations, an increase of the "no subsidence" extraction rate to 60% for squat pillars is proposed.

One ratio determines the minimum value required to at least break even while the other measures a probable value based on the asymptotic theory of statistical extremes.Its application is briefly illustrated by means of an underground gold mine extension project, an oil sands mine project and a polymetallic open pit project.Once a favourable recommendation has been obtained then a detailed ""cash flow after taxes"" analysis can be carried out for the project.IntroductionMany tools are used in financial decision-making such as the payback period, the discounted cash flow, the internal rate of return and the wealth growth rate (Berry , 1971).These tools are useful and meaningful in evaluating normal projects closely related to regular business where the number of assumptions made is usually very small and where the cost of capita! is usually selected as a discount rate or a hurdle value. In situations where a significant number of assumptions have to be made,two problems can emerge, namely:I. the risk involved is underestimated leading to a potential financial disaster; or2. a good opportunity is lost because the approach used in evaluating the project is too conservative.Each assumption has its own degree of uncertainty and it is well known that combining uncertainties together can lead to a total uncertainty of critical proportion. The easiest way to account for risk is to increase the discount rate or the hurdle value, but this approach alone is quite subjective and can easily lead to the problems described above."

IN THE first report1 disks of steel of known composition and history were exposed, under carefully prescribed conditions, to impacts of explosion products resulting from the explosion of 50-gm. charges of explosives having well-determined rates of detonation, or to impacts of a weight of known mass, falling through measured distances. There were available at the Bureau of Mines Experiment Station five explosives, having rates of detonation of 5716, 4470, 3190, 2296, and 1523 meters per second. It being desired to continue this exposure downward, and no explosives with a lesser rate of detonation being at hand, resort was had to the impact of a falling weight, the differences in the velocity of impact being attained by varying the height from which the weight was allowed to fall. It was expected by this means to demonstrate experimentally that the development of Neumann bands was determined by the suddenness of the deformation of the metal in which they were produced. But while progressive deformations were obtained with the explosive arges, the falling-weight method failed because the tup was ogressively deformed, also the disks were so flattened as to be unfit for metallographic examination. A return, therefore, has been made to the use of explosives as the source of energy, an air-gap being interposed between the charge of explosive and the disk, as the effect diminishes as the function of the distance between the charge and the object on which the products of its explosion, or the shock wave from its detonation, impinge. The details of the arrangement of the tests by the air-gap method were the same as those described by Foley and Howell,2 except that after the system had been set up and the desired apparent specific gravity for the explosive

The basic work of Z. Jeffries 1,2,3 has long ago established the main features of grain growth in the presence of a dispersed second phase. Working with sintered specimens of initially fine grained tungsten, to which various amounts of thoria had been added, Jeffries found that grain growth was inhibited, that is, practically prevented, up to a certain annealing temperature. When this temperature, which increased with the thoria content, was exceeded, extremely large grains developed abruptly from the fine grained matrix. such a a temperature" was later found by Gross-mann~3,14 in certain types of steel, while ~~i~ showed15 that in other steels grain growth was gradual, without inhibition and abrupt coarsening. Later work demonstrated the connection between coarsening and aluminum additions. The viewpoint that the direct cause of inhibition and coarsening in aluminum killed steels is a fine dispersion of aluminum oxide21 appears to be held quite generally, although some doubts have been voiced even very recently, 20 In steels with Ti additions the titanium carbide phase is considered responsible for the inhibition effects found.20 The coarsening temperature increases with the titanium content. That coarsening may occur, as a result of, certain heat treatments, even in low carboil rimmed sheet steel, was shown by Samuels. He also detected coarsening in a steel ingot of similar composition, after giving it the same heat treatment as that used by him for the sheet material. In this instance the identity of the inhibiting phase has not been determined. However, Tangerding found23 that even the few small carbide particles, which occur in carbonyl iron, have a very marked inhibitive effect. As a result of an oxidizing anneal at 850°C, large grains begin to form at the surface of the carbonyl iron specimen, and gradually grow inward as the subsurface oxidation of the carbide particles progresses and eliminates the obstruction. The carbide particles Can be removed also by annealing in hydrogen, with similar results. But if the oxidizing anneal of 10 hr at 850°C in air is followed between in hydrogen for 75 hr at the Same temperature, grain growth is more hibition usually the whole specimen is transformed into a single crystal (approx. 1.5 cm X 5 cm). The reversed procedure, that is, hydrogen annealing followed by oxidizing annealing leads to smaller grains. Tangerding arrived at the logical conclusion that there must have been in his specimens some additional obstruction to grain growth hibition from a minor impurity, other than carbon. It seems likely that this obstruction was caused by an oxide formed during the oxidizing anneal and gradually reduced rtain the subsequent hydrogen-annealing. Other instances of grain growth inhibition of varying severity, associated with a dispersed second phase, have been described by several authors. Notable examples: lead with 0.06 pet Cu or Ni,24 cartridge brass with 0.12 pct Cr,25 or with up to 0.15

"Melt conditioned direct-chill (MC-DC) casting is a novel technology which combines vertical direct-chill (DC) casting with a high shear device directly immersed in the sump for in situ microstructural control. In this paper, the solidification mechanism of DC casting under varying conditions is discussed. The temperature profiles in the sump were measured under the steady state casting conditions by using sacrificing thermocouples. Detailed comparisons of the derived thermal condition are made. The individual role of grain refiner additions, natural thermosolutal convection and forced convection in the sump and the interplay of these factors in determining the solidification structures of DC cast billets are discussed. The MC-DC casting technology can be used to control microstructural constituents and casting defects in DC cast billets/ingots by in situ manipulating of the thermal and fluid flow conditions.INTRODUCTION Direct-chill (DC) casting of aluminium, has been the essential commercial process for producing feedstock suitable for subsequent processing, such as extrusion, rolling or forging. Fine and equiaxed grain structures in the as-cast billets/ingots are required to enable a fine and uniform distribution of second phase particles and microporosity. This leads to higher productivity, more cost-effective homogenisation and more efficient downstream thermomechanical processing. The addition of chemical inoculants has been the standard industrial operation prior to casting for grain refinement of Al alloys. However, it has been established that less than 1% of the grain refiner particles added actually act as heterogeneous nuclei to refine the grain structures, showing a very low grain refining efficiency (Greer, Bunn, Tronche, Evans, & Bristow, 2000). Moreover, the remaining particles from the grain refiner addition in the final casting may cause surface defects during downstream processing. A major issue of the metallurgical quality of large sized ingots/billets is the non-uniformity of microstructures even with chemical grain refiner additions. This is due to the fact that the grain structure formed in the different zones of the billet depends on the local chemical composition and local cooling rate. The local cooling rate can vary from 0.4~1 K/s at the centre of the billet to around 10–20 K/s at its surface zone (Nadella, Eskin, Du, & Katgerman, 2008). The large thermal gradient along radial direction between billet surface and interior of the melt during conventional DC casting induces thermal stress and cold cracking even with grain refiner addition. Therefore the control of casting defects, such as macrosegregation, porosity, cold/hot cracking and distortion of the billets/slabs, etc., is still challenging in industry, causing high scrap rate of DC cast ingots/billets even with grain refiner addition."

During the past year considerable work dealing with the mechanical properties and microstructure following the anneal under uniform condi-tions of certain types of commercial rolled brass has been done in this laboratory. Since these experiments were conducted with the active cooperation of the Bridgeport Brass Co., involving free use of its product, and have thus furnished information which is characteristic of some of its special mixtures, full publication of the numerical relationships and comparative results encountered does not seem justifiable. Some of the more general features of this work are, however, available and it is our present purpose to use the material in question, along with some results of special tests, in discussing the characteristics of recrystallization as related to the degree of hardening by strain and the ordinary annealing variables. We desire to make acknowledgment of the many courtesies extended by Mr. Charles Ferry, Metallurgist of the Bridgeport Brass Co., and the value of his cooperation, which has greatly stimulated the study of brass in this laboratory. A clear and systematic presentation of the principal relations between temperature and time of anneal, the changing physical properties and microstructure and the degree of previous reduction by cold-rolling, was first made, in the case of rolled brass and copper, by the French engineer, C. Grard,' in 1909, although much fragmentary information of this general character had appeared earlier and the main facts involved were undoubtedly known to many brass specialists through their own private research. The distribution of cobalt and vanadium over non-equivalent crystallographic sites in C14-type Zr(VCo), alloys has been investigated. An anomalous X-ray scattering technique developed by Skolnick, Kondo. and lavine7 by which the separation in the scattering factors of two similar atoms can be enhanced was employed. Six alloys spanning the pseudobinary section ZrV1.6Co0.4-ZrVO.6CO1.4 at 10pct steps showed a nonrandom compositionally dependent distribution. Specifically, at high vanadium content cobalt preferentially occupied sites of type (6h) and vanadium, sites of type (2a; at low vanadium content the reverse was observed. In addition to the distribution fraction the structural parameters x and z were obtained. There was no significant deviation of these parameters from those obtained in the ideal C14 structure. Certain suggestions are made to account for the observed nonrandomness in the distribution of atoms on the two types of sites. INTERMETALLIC compounds of formula AB2 iso-morphous with MgCu2, MgZn2, and MgNi2 are known as Laves phases. Because Laves phases exhibit high symmetry and coordination numbers, the highest possible for an AB2-type compound,1 they are among the most frequently observed compounds in nature. In recent years interest has centered about the purely transition metal Laves phases2-' in efforts to understand the function of atomic size and electronic structure in the formation of these compounds. It has been observed that pseudobinary Laves phase systems often show a variation of structure across the phase diagram. Such a system is the ZrV2-ZrCo2 in which the structure varies from cubic MgCu2 to hexagonal MgZn2 to cubic MgCu2.4 Some understanding about the conditions under which the second modification is stable can perhaps be gained by studying the distribution of cobalt and vanadium atoms on lattice sites in the MgZn2 modification of the system ZrV2-ZrCo2. In both the MgZn2 and MgNi2-types there exist nonequivalent positions open to occupancy by the B element, whereas in the MgCu2 prototype all sites are equivalent. Skolnick, Kondo, and La-vine7 have developed an anomalous scattering technique suitable for this type of investigation. Whereas the influence of size on the formation of a Laves phase is well recognized, no substantial evidence has been put forth in support of the size ratio dependence of a particular prototype. Berry and Raynor8 suggested that RA /RB ratio does indeed affect the type of structure that is chosen, MgZn2 compounds tending to cluster about 1.225 while MgCu2 compounds were found at larger deviations from this ratio. Dwight,3 however, from a study of 164 Laves phases does not believe this generalization to be justified. Electronic effects are certain to play a part in the stability of Laves phases in general and in the choice of a structure type in particular. For example, size along would favor the formation of Laves compounds of Ti, Zr, Hf, Ta, or Nb as the A element with nickel or copper as the B element. The absence of such is attributed to an unfavorable electron : atom ratio by Elliott and rostoker.4 Early experiments of Laves and witte9 with pseudobinary and pseudoternary systems of the three prototypes established the dependence of crystal structure upon electron: atom ratios. They observed that the MgCu2 structure dissolved elements of higher valency until the electron: atom ratio of =1.8 was reached; the MgZn2 likewise dissolved elements of lower valency replacing zinc. witte,6 from calculations of the electron : atom volumes of Brillouin Zones, obtained limits of stability for the prototypes MgCu2 and MgZn2. Elliott and Rostoker4 used these limits with considerable success in the all-transition element Laves phases they investigated. According to witte,6 compounds between the electron :atom ratios of 1.80 and 2.32 were of the MgZn2 type; those above and below exhibited the MgCu2-type structure. On the basis of these limits and an assumed valency of zirconium based upon the near tetra-valence of titanium, Elliott and Rostoker obtained valencies for the first transition series elements. For the Laves phases with which this investigation is concerned, ZrV2 and ZrCo2, the authors calculated electron :atom ratios of 2.54 and 1.56, respectively. These ratios are for the MgCu2-type structure and straddle the stability band of the MgZn2 modification. One could, therefore, predict that a pseudobinary system ZrV2-ZrCo2 should pass through the MgZn2 modification in traversing the composition diagram from one end to the other. Implicit in this assumption is a smooth change of the electron: atom ratio from 2'54 to 1.56. MOSS10 states that his finding the low temperature structure of ZrCr2 to be C15 instead of C14 alters greatly Elliott's valency of zirconium and hence the assumed valencies of the other metals. That there is wide interest in the preparation and properties of metallic zirconium and its salts is indicated by the many articles recently published in scientific and technical journals and the many patents issued. The compounds of zirconium have numerous important uses and more uses will doubtless be found. In the course of the special work on rare metals that were of military importance during the war, the authors of this bulletin were detailed to the Golden mining experiment station of the Bureau of Mines to prepare metallic zirconium and to investigate its properties. A number of investigations in recent years have indicated that sintered or coherent zirconium metal is very resistive to acids; that it can be used for electrodes, and it probably will find metallurgical uses. A steel containing zirconium has been proposed for use in armor plate and automobile parts, and nickel-zirconium alloys have been suggested for high-speed cutting tools and for cutlery. Numerous articles in scientific journals have recommended the use of zirconium oxide as a refractory, an abrasive, a pigment in paints, and as an opaquing agent in enamel ware. The salts have been used in the textile industry' as a mordant and also for weighting silk. When the authors began their investigation, they found it necessary to collect all of the available literature on the general subject of zirconium and its compounds. Pure salts could not be obtained on the market, and in order to get these, as a preliminary step to the preparation of the metal, the literature had to be classified and the methods of preparing the salts investigated. Also, there was much difficulty at first in making satisfactory analyses, and this phase of the work received careful attention. As it was necessary to begin with a historical review of the literature, such a review is given as Part I of this report, and a bibliography is included as Part IV. References to the numbered items in this bibliography are made throughout the text, the usual footnote references being omitted. Analyses of the products and conclusions as to their purity are given under the descriptions of methods of preparation. A table showing the properties of the amorphous metal, and another showing the properties of the coherent metal, will be found under appropriate headings in Part II. No attempt has been made in the historical review to discuss fully all the published information about zirconium and its compounds, but only such material has been assembled as has a direct bearing upon the present work. Considerable difficulty was experienced in collecting this material because of the confusion of terms by various authors who perhaps did not thoroughly understand the chemistry of zirconium.

"In a typical year, approximately 1.7 million tons of residues and wastes are expected from Ajaokuta integrated steel plant, Nigeria. They will be generated mainly from sinter plant, blast furnace (BF), and basic oxygen furnace (BOF) operations and during rolling and finishing. The residues and wastes include slag, dust, sludge and slurries from gas cleaning, waste water, mill scales and other associated scraps. In this paper concepts for the utilization of residues and wastes in Ajaokuta Steel Plant where no reclamation routines have been provided for in the first and second phases of its project implementation is designed. The paper analyses the sources of the iron oxide wastes and evaluates the quantities expected from the main production facilities of the plant which include the two 312 m2 capacity sintering machines, the two 2000 m3 blast furnaces and two 130-T BOF (of the 2nd phase expansion of the Steel Plant). A reclamation routine designed for Ajaokuta residues and wastes is presented.IntroductionIn the steel industry, approximately 550kg of residues per ton of crude steel arise from the production processes and from pollution control facilities [1- 4]. These residues consist of slag, dusts and sludge, mill scale, spent pickle liquor, and other iron bearing materials. The main by – products generated in the steel industry are listed in Table I.Although major progress has been made in the recycling and use of some of these residues, particularly flue dust, blast furnace and steel making slag, yet a significant quantity are land filled or stockpiled. These unsightly stockpiles occupy valuable real estate and may become a source of environmental pollution if not otherwise disposed. In any case, the dumping option has become quite costly. For instance, one ton of iron ore costs between 28 and 34 US dollar, whereas as much as $20 per ton of steel produced is required to meet environmental compliance obligation in the USA [5, 6]."

It points out how fuel-consumption is to be decreased in open-hearth practice, by changes in the plan of the furnace. To look first at the greatest item of loss, radiation, it is seen that thicker brick-work is advisable to lessen this. Especially is this true of the roof, made at present, almost universally, only 9 inches thick to prevent cutting. Now that high roofs, well above the course of the flame, are becoming general, and the average melter is better able to judge the temperature of his furnace, that reason has less force; and we may build roofs 18 inches thick, or perhaps better cover the usual 9 inches with an equivalent layer of sand, which has the advantage of following the arch as it rises and falls with the different degrees of heat. The side-walls of the hearth, usually 131/2 inches thick, may also he thickened up to 18 inches, and the door-linings to 7 inches; and the heat thereby saved will be valuable, while its absence from the working-platform will be much appreciated by the workmen.

Baal Bone Colliery uses longwall technology for an output of over two million tonne/year while Clarence Colliery currently uses continuous miners and breaker line supports for an output of two million tonnelyear.A computerised geological database and modelling system has been implemented to service these mines routinely, as well as several outlying prospects. The database is constantly upgraded for drillhole information, surveyed spot levels on the surface and underground, quality sampling details, surveyed mine workings and geological mapping. This information is edited on a routine basis, allowing dynamic modelling of key aspects of geology for ongoing operations.

"At one time the Alaskan Eskimo lived in many small settlements scattered along the Arctic coast. These settlements extended as far south as Bristol Bay and several miles inland on the large rivers. When the white man established trading posts, schools, hospitals, and missions, these people gradually congregated around them in a few large villages. The natural fuel supply near many of the large villages along the Arctic coast became exhausted as a result of the abnormally large influx of people from small outlying settlements.The population of Barrow, Alaska, according to the 1940 census, is 363 persons, but since that time it has increased considerably, and later estimates place the present population between 400 and 500 persons. With the exception of 25 white persons, the entire population is comprised of Eskimos.The government maintains a school, hospital, radio station, and weather station at Barrow. In addition to the government, installations, there is a church, a privately owned trading post, and cooperative store owned by the Eskimos.For many years the Barrow Eskimos depended on driftwood and petroleum residue from Cape Simpson for their fuel supply. This fuel provided not only warmth for the Eskimo during the long cold winters but also heat for melting ice, the only source of 'water during .the winter. In recent years the sources of petroleum residue and driftwood have not been adequate to meet the demands for fuel During the winter of 1942-43 and again in 1943-44, Barrow experienced an acute shortage of fuel.The fuel problem at Barrow was brought to the attention of Governor Ernest E. Gruening, who was instrumental in getting a Bureau of Mines engineer4/ to investigate reported coal occurrences in the vicinity. Coal deposits along the Meade River and at Peard Bay were examined during the spring and fall of 1943. The Alaska Native Service shipped in mining equipment in September 1943 and commenced stripping an open-pit mine on the Meade River in June 1944. In conjunction with this work, an engineer5/ of the Bureau explored by churn drilling to determine the tonnage of- coal in the vicinity of the mine. In addition to this work, the Bureau of mines examined coal deposits in Peard Bay area and along the Kuk River south of Wainwright."
