Cumulative sum (CUSUM) statistical process control methods have been used in many industries to monitor quality control results. CUSUM charts are a method to determine when small changes in data indicate a major change in results. E.S. Page at AT&T developed the method in 1954. In many blasting situations, vibration and air blast readings vary slightly from blast to blast. Whether the change is significant or not can be hard to interpret from the raw data. CUSUM charts can assist in determining whether a major change is taking place and when the change began.

A few years ago, the term Track & Trace for explosives was only known in Europe and Brazil at most; the introduction of this technology is experiencing an undreamt-of boom worldwide. More and more countries are enacting legislation to introduce Track & Trace of explosives and follow Europe and Brazil on this path. At present, the world's leading manufacturers are already using such solutions, are in the process of implementing them, or are in the planning process. However, based on the experience gained in Europe, there are outstanding challenges for all manufacturers. These are questions of compliance, logistics, distribution, and, of course, especially, the necessary adaptation of the production environment. However, this development involves considerable effort on the part of the manufacturers. New devices for marking the explosives and digitally recording the data are integrated into the production process. This should be done as cost-effectively as possible, without restricting production capacity and speed, and with as few process changes as possible. This paper uses real-life customer experiences examples to explain paths from project design to real implementation. Lessons learned from the experience of European explosives manufacturers are presented, missteps are described, and solutions are identified. Individual steps along this path are explained, and solutions are told to avoid pitfalls and bottlenecks. Finally, it refers to the risk analysis and concrete examples in implementing the planning into production. Methods of marking various explosives are shown, and the use of Track & Trace to solve logistics tasks in picking and shipping explosives, including the data exchange with ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) systems.

Wadi Limestone Quarry is one of the largest captive mines of Associated Cement Companies Ltd, India. The mine management wanted to extend the excavation as close to the plant as possible for maximum exploitation of the deposit. The National Institute of Rock Mechanics and the management of Wadi Limestone Quarry carried out comprehensive investigations to evolve a methodology to control vibration and flyrock within safe limits.

A cooperative effort between a blasting vibration consultant, a blasting contractor, and personnel from the City of Las Vegas has dramatically reduced complaints from residential areas near developmental blasting projects. The principal methods used involved the preparation of an informative video recording which presents various aspects of the blasting operations, the design of a distinctive flyer which is attached to residential doors, and pre-blast meetings for information dissemination.

Drilling and blasting is an every day, sometimes routine activity, that is always fraught with catastrophic capabilities. Under the best conditions it is hazardous, time consuming and expensive. Under the worst conditions it may be impossible to perform by any but the most skilled specialists. Under all conditions drilling and/or blasting jobs are relatively difficult and require specialized equipment, materials and skills that are uncommon. This paper reviews some-of the jobs and problems handled by one drilling and blasting specialist to show the many varied types of problems requiring the services of specialists.

To improve control of blasting, tests were performed to assess non-electric cap accuracy. Simultaneous testing using a Velocity of Detonation Recorder (VODR), Red Lake LoCam and an Instantel DS-677 blast monitor was done. Favorable comparisons were found in the three records. This testing confirmed the accuracy of an inexpensive and expedient cap testing procedure.

Accidents associated with the storage of explosives prompted regulating the locations of such storage at least as early as 1719, when an act was passed in Great Britain. During the following years various refinements to the regulations were made, but a major explosion in 1864 in which there was destruction and loss of life as far away as 10 miles, led to the landmark Explosives Act of 1875. This act certainly had influence on regulators in the United States: when Massachusetts established an explosives distance/weight table in 1904 they referred to the prior British work. Later, Colonel Dunn of The American Railway Association convened a conference of explosives manufacturers to discuss safe storage. From this conference the American Table of Distances was established in December, 1910.

The U.S. Army Engineer Waterways Experiment Station (WES) recently conducted a series of precision-scale water shock experiments which consisted of the detonation of several 8-gram, 10-gram, and 12-gram spherical explosive charges. The charges were fabricated from NAX 2000 Primasheet explosive and were center-detonated. Commercial tourmaline crystal water shock sensors were used to measure the induced pressure fields in the water. The measured water shock waveforms and related parameters from the precision-scale experiments were in general agreement with data from larger-scale experiments.

People used to regard emulsion explosives as the safest industrial explosives. But in the process of manufacturing emulsion explosives spontaneous ignitions of the remnant emulsion matrix have happened under the conditions of constant or low temperature. These fatal accidents show both emulsion explosives and emulsion matrix may involve hidden danger. Since the temperature in its production emulsion matrix is high, emulsion matrix is sensitive to mechanic action.

In order to minimize the ore dilution induced by blast movement in surface mines it is necessary to quantify such movement. This will make it possible to more accurately locate the grade boundaries on the surface of a blasted rockpile prior to excavation. This paper describes the development and testing of a method to accurately measure the direction and magnitude of sub-surface blast movement. The technique involves the use of magnetic "radiometry, using a cesium vapor "radiometer and real-time differentially corrected, GPS system, to locate the post-blast position of magnetically enhanced target objects, whose pre-blast locations are known, without disturbance of the blasted rock. The objective is to design an accurate and efficient technique which can be integrated into a mines production cycle.

Tracer blasting is commonly used in Canadian underground mines for overbreak control. It involves tracing a column of ANFO with a low strength detonating cord. In order to investigate the effectiveness of tracer blasting in perimeter control and to understand its mechanism, a field experimentation was conducted which involved drifting, benching and pipe tests.

A vibration record is a complex of motions resulting from a combination of direct, reflected and refracted seismic energy that originated at a blast source. Multiple hole blasting using delays further complicates the motion in that overlapping of seismic wave trains may occur when delays do not fire in the programed sequence. This can result in variations in amplitude, frequency and wave-1ength of the vibration. Amplitude may be doubled, frequency may oscillate between the highest and lowest frequencies present and wave-length may approach doubling of the longest wave-length present. These effects can present serious problems to conducting a safe blasting program since increased amplitudes and lower frequencies present higher damage potentials for structures. The development of these effects is described and illustrated graphically to show how these effects can occur.

A Performance Support System is a tool that combines explosive's theory, government regulations, and site specific knowledge in an easily accessible computer program. Large production blasts involving many series in parallel have long been a source of complication. When speed and accuracy are most necessary in blast preparation an efficient and precise method of wiring is required. After loading a large number of holes and being pressured for time, due to lack of daylight, equipment shutdown, etc., an effective hook-up plan can eliminate many last minute problems. It is the intention of this paper to offer a simplified wiring proceedure which when employed can save precious time and encourage efficient and economical utilization of blasting personnel and material.

Public concern over blast-induced CRACKING has led to the search for a radically new approach to vibration control. The present system, while scientifically correct, is cumbersome to explain. Historically the potential for blast-induced cracking has come to be described through velocity time histories, which are correlated with observation of crack extension under controlled experimental conditions. Unfortunately time histories are simply too difficult for jurors and village or county regulatory boards to understand. Furthermore these arbiters must accept on faith that the observers were unbiased. Since these public bodies control the manner in which blasting activity is adjudicated and regulated, information must be presented in a form they can understand and that is not subject to second-guessing.
