Western Mining Corporation (WMC), managers of the Windarra Nickel Project, installed a raise-bored haulage shaft and underground crushing system at the Mt Windarra Nickel Mine in 1982. The system is the second of its type installed by WMC, the first being at the Otter Juan Mine in Kambalda in 1976/77. Both haulage systems became necessary as a result of the increasing production limitations, and escalating costs of a deep decline mine.The Windarra haulage system required a single 3 m diameter vertical raise drill hole, 470 m deep and equipped for skip haulage. Two five tonne skips, in balance, hoist crushed ore and mullock to the surface, at a design rate of 200 tonne/hr, effectively reducing truck haulage leads by up to 50 per cent. The system is now fully operational and will enable the mine to achieve its maximum production rate.The raise-bored shaft system has been shown to be cost effective and would be used again in circumstances where raise drilling is applicable.

The Ore Reserve/Exploration System implemented at Mount Isa for M.I.M. Holdings Limited is a comprehensive computer system designed to process assay, geological, structural and survey data input via special purpose logging sheets from daily activities at Isa Mine, Hilton Mine and various Carpentaria Exploration Company prospects. The system performs two basic functions; (1) data acquisition, validation and file maintenance to prepare the data for retrieval, and (2) generation of routine and optional reports. The types of reports available range from masterfile detail printouts and retrieval of data by key items to survey computations, structural analyses, cutoff calculations, statistical analyses and ore reserve calculations by the polygonal, inverse square or moving average techniques. The use of various optional reports available through the system is illustrated by several examples, and planned future development is discussed.

The first stage in the refining of lead blast furnace bullion is the removal of copper and this is normally done as a batch process in open kettles,A number of attempts have been made in the past to establish fontinuous processes operating in reverberatory type furnaces, but the growth of accretions in the furnace has always presented a serious problem.This has been overcome in the plant of the Broken Hill Associated Smelters Pty Ltd at Port Pirie by the construction of a reverberatory furnace and ancillary cooling system of novel design.Although a number of mechanical and metallurgical problems still remain to be solved, it is claimed that a workable continuous copper drossing process has been established.

Over the last six years Mandalay Resources has increased production rates and improved safety outcomes at its Costerfield mine in Victoria, Australia. This mine is an underground operation utilising narrow mining techniques to extract vertical veins, and produces up to 80 000 equivalent ounces of gold per annum, in both gold and antimony value.The operational challenges of narrow vein mining include controlling overbreak when veins being mined are only 300 mm wide. The mine has developed methods and modified equipment to suit extraction of these veins. Productivity improvements over the period have involved development of a stoping method and equipment to suit 1.8 m wide development drives. Over the last five years and during a skills shortage, recruitment, training and retention of personnel has been key to keeping corporate knowledge and skills to execute a careful efficient mining technique to minimise overbreak.Managing an underground operation close to nearby residents has unique challenges. Historically Victorian residents had family members work as underground miners; however, in the current day with few underground operations in this jurisdiction, community knowledge of mining has decreased. The Costerfield Operations are only 100 m from the nearest residence and the company values community engagement, partnership and investment with local Heathcote organisations.The mine has invested substantially in executive coaching of its leadership team early, which has paid dividends in problem solving potential of that team and ensuring the operation delivers on its promises to all stakeholders. The operation has become safer and employees are now more aware of their individual contribution in producing safe, efficient gold and antimony that benefit the whole operation, community and the region.CITATION:McCarthy, M, 2016. Gas velocity (Jg) measurements conducted close to the froth-pulp interface over the cross-section of a flotation cell reveal how efficiently the incoming air is being dispersed throughout the volume of the cell. Furthermore, measurements of Jg at deepest locations in the cell provide valuable information about air recirculation and dispersion conditions in the bulk volume of the cell. Gas velocity in flotation cells has predominantly been measured by a transient capture of gas in a graduated probe. In this project, a new sensor for measuring gas velocity in an on-line manner was developed. A probe is partially immersed in the flotation machine, below the froth-liquid interface. The probe is used to collect the rising air bubbles from the liquid phase. The liquid-froth interface is shifted into the probe under vacuum. A controlled vacuum is kept inside the probe. As air bubbles burst inside the probe, the excess of air is continuously removed from the probe via suction. The removed air is measured using a mass flow meter. The fully automated sensor allows us to continuously measure Jg at different location in a flotation machine. An experimental programme was carried out in a 10 cm diameter laboratory flotation column to determine the accuracy and repeatability of the automated sensor. The new sensor was used for evaluating gas dispersion conditions in a 215 litre transparent laboratory scale flotation cell. Gas velocity distributions along the radial and axial directions of the cell were measured over a wide range of operating conditions. The operating conditions in the cell were modified by altering impeller speed and air flow rate. Two different rotor-stator mechanisms were utilised to disperse the air in the cell, the MultiMix and the FreeFlow mechanism. In this paper, a description of the gas velocity sensor is given, and the results of the experimental work are discussed in detail.

For many years it was realised that the methods used for unloading concentrates at Port Pirie were inefficient and labour intensive, therefore, when a decision was reached to standardise the east-west rail link from Sydney to Perth, the opportunity was taken to consider entirely new schemes for the handling of concentrates at Broken Hill and Port Pirie. After considerable testing and investigation, it was decided to install a completely new concentrates handling plant incorporating a tippler at Port Pirieòto replace the previous long established methods of unloading and dis- tributing concentrates to the operating plant.and the shipping berths. To achieve this, wagons of concentrates from the various mines are marshalled in a set order at Broken Hill and conveyed to Port Pirie in 56-wagon trains. On arrival at Port Pirie, the wagons are checked and moved to a position where they come under the control of the automatic wagon marshalling equipment.

The Bureau of Mines equipped a longwall shearer with a water- jet-assisted cutting system and measured dust levels during the cutting of a simulated coal block. The block was cut dry, at a conventional water spray pressure of 1 MPa and with water-jet-assisted cutting pressures ranging from 7 to 40 MPa. At water pressures of 20 MPa and higher, dust concentrations were reduced by as much as 85 % via water-jet-assisted cutting in comparison with conventional water sprays. This reduction was achieved without any increase in the water flow rate.

South Africa has a long history of rockbursts, some 100 years. During this time much research and many developments have taken place in the country to limit the occurrence of rockbursts, and to mitigate their effects. In this paper I shall present a personal view of what I consider to be important achievements, and contributions made. Some of these are: planning of stope layouts, and the use of strike barrier pillars; recognition of energy as a key factor, the use of the energy release rate ERR as a layout planning criterion, and development of MINSIM for calculation of ERR and stope planning; sequential grid stope layouts; use of backfill for stope support; and, development yielding support elements, and dynamic testing of stope and tunnel supports. The record shows the establishment of a rock engineering research powerhouse over a 40 to 50 year period and, unfortunately, the complete breakdown of this capability in the subsequent 10 years. The experience gained in the development of an Operator Guidance System (OGS) for on-line process control and fault diagnosis in a commercial scale sintering process will be discussed in this paper. The OGS development started with the specification of feasible control and support tasks, eg ratio control scheme, mass balance calculations. Next, minimum requirements for fault diagnosis and process control were defined and the adequacy of existing instrumentation was assessed. The OGS knowledge base consists of both quantitative and qualitative diagnosis methods. Quantitative models based on fundamental engineering principle are used first and any gaps in such quantitative knowledge are then filled with heuristic rules. The diagnostic rules for the knowledge base was developed based on the knowledge acquired from experienced operators and operations engineers and validated with plant data. A real time reasoning program was written using C language and data base software. The OGS has a human-computer interface which is the primary means of interaction between the OGS and process operator. The OGS development has been successful in assisting operators in decision-making in their routine tasks. Further enhancement to the existing system is currently underway.

Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines Pty Ltd (KCGM) is a management company, formed in 1989, to manage the assets and operate the Kalgoorlie joint venture for the owner companies Gold Mines of Kalgoorlie Limited (GMK) and Homestake Gold of Australia Limited (HGAL). Mining is still in progress on the 'Golden Mile' and surrounding areas more than 100 years after Paddy Hannan's discovery adjacent to the active Mt Charlotte mine. From 1893 until 30 June 1995 the Kalgoorlie Goldfields has produced approximately 45 million ounces (-1400 tonnes) of gold from mining and treating about 179 million tonnes of ore. It has been a generally held concept that crushing operations were, by their nature, too simple to benefit from the implementation of advanced process control. The commissioning of an OCS¬ expert control system and image-based oversize detection system, VisioRock, at the Pilbara Iron Tom Price facility are dispelling these notions. A constraint-based OCS¬ expert control system has been designed and commissioned on the high-grade crushing and screening plant along with a vision-based oversize detection system functioning on six product conveyor belts. To date, the expert control has demonstrated the ability to increase production by maximising dynamic constraint utilisation. Dynamic constraint utilisation is a concept developed by Rio Tinto Technical Services for effectively evaluating constraint-based control logic performance. The VisioRock system has been installed and configured and has been operating for a period of several months. Currently, Tom Price and Metso personnel are working to define correct oversize detection thresholds. Details of the plant implementation are discussed.

In Europe, a major interest in the infrastructure and tunnelling fields is in the new crossings of Alps in the form of base tunnels, which are important components of the high-speed (for passengers)/high-capacity (for freight) Trans European railway corridors. These tunnels cross the mountain belt at the elevation of the main cities and basins located all around the Alps and are longer (up to 57 km) and deeper (up to 2500 m) than all tunnels constructed in the centuries before. The excavation of the first Alpine railway and road traffi c tunnels could in general be carried out successfully by conventional excavation methods. With the great lengths of the new base tunnels, mechanised excavation by using tunnel boring machines (TBMs) is imperative as it contributes significantly to savings in construction time and costs. Questions are however posed on the adoption of such a systematic tunnel construction method given the severe ground conditions which are some time anticipated along the tunnel alignment, with possible major geological hazards such as water inflow in heterogeneous fractured or karstifi ed rock masses, stress-induced tensile failure of hard rocks, and plastic shear failure and squeezing of weak rocks, etc. This lecture is to briefly review the current state-of-the-art in the understanding and modelling of two such critical hazards as spalling/bursting and squeezing ground behaviour. With the present interest in the design of mechanised tunnelling with TBMs in such conditions, the complex interaction between the rock mass, the tunnel machine and its system components, and the tunnel support is studied in detail by numerical modelling. The research and development efforts presently underway with the intention to provide the designer with a novel three-dimensional (3D) simulator of mechanised tunnel excavation are presented. Case examples are discussed with reference to the Lyon-Turin Base Tunnel design.

"This study investigates the dual function of a temperature responsive anionic co-polymer of poly (N-isopropyl acrylamide) (PNIPAM) as a selective flocculant/flotation collector. PNIPAM is used for separating hematite from 50:50 mixtures of hematite and quartz, at a variety of particle sizes. The performance of PNIPAM in this system is compared to that of conventional flotation collectors: sodium oleate and sodium dodecyl sulfate. The results of the study demonstrate that anionic PNIPAM used at 50¦C (above the lower critical solution temperature (LCST)) is the most effective flotation collector for hematite particles in the size range between 10 and 20 ¦m. This is attributed to the increased probability of both particle/bubble collision and particle/bubble attachment through the formation of hydrophobic hematite aggregates. Anionic PNIPAM used at 50¦C also produced the highest hematite recoveries for very fine hematite particles (circa 1 ¦m). However this recovery was completely unselective. This lack of selectivity is partially attributed to the activation of quartz particles by PNIPAM, but is thought to mainly occur as a result of entrapment of quartz particles within the matrix of hematite aggregates.CITATION:Forbes, E and Franks, G V, 2013. This paper discusses experimental results of physical scale models employed to study the stability of a pillar between rectangular roadways. A programme of laboratory investigations utilising a bi-axial test rig has been undertaken to examine the influence of various stressfields on the stability of pillars between mine roadways. The effect of pillar height/width ratio on the overall stability is studied. Observations of failure characteristics in and around pillars are discussed especially in relation to the various stressfields applied to the models.

Mining of copper ore at Mount Lyell has been continuous since 1893. The operation has always been marginal and the depressed copper Market over the last decade has seen mining continue on the basis of a series of short term plans. In 1985 it was determined that the mine would close in 1989 on completion of the 40 Series mining block. Significant changes in the value of the Australian dollar in 1986 and the subsequent effect on profitability dictated a review of the Company's operations. Lower level ore reserves, mining methods and ore handling systems were re-examined and a plan proposed for mining of the 50 and 60 Series mining blocks. The improved economics of this plan, together with workforce and State Government initiatives resulted in an extension of mine life to 1994.

On a world scale, many Mid-Proterozoic fluvial sediments are prospective for low grade, large-tonnage gold deposits. A significant area of the Northern Territory is covered by such Mid-Proterozoic sediments, the gold potential of which has been barely tested. The geological knowledge of these sediments is summarised. The Westmoreland Conglomerate, the basal Mid-Proterozoic formation of the McArthur Basin, has been subjected to detailed sedimentological studies in order to determine the paleoenvironments and to assess the possibility of paleoplacer occurrences. The results indicate that the sandstones and conglomerates of the formation were deposited by braided rivers and debris flows as an alluvial fan which originated in source areas to the north east. The formation contains several upward-fining cycles of sedimentation, which are related to repeated periods of uplift in the source areas. The formation of placer-type gold occurrences is possible in such depositional environments. Very limited heavy mineral sampling has indicated a cassiterite- wolframite-gold suite in the sediments of the Westmoreland Conglomerate. Disconformities at the base of sedimentation cycles are deemed to be the most likely sites for large-tonnage paleoplacer concentrations.
