The Department of Mines Tasmania employs a Drilling Section for specialised drilling re- quired by government and semi-government bodies. The section has a complement of nine crews oper- ating auger, cable tool, rotary and diamond drilling plants. For some years the Department has been involved in site investigation drilling of the Derwent River. The experience gained indicated that drilling methods should be altered. In 1976 an urgent programme was requested and the opportunity was taken to solve many problems associated with previous investigations. Equipment and methods are discussed in detail. The improved technique contributed to the suc- cessful completion of the Phase 1 site investi- Gation.

The depletion of easily mined high-grade ore bodies resulted in the industry having to exploit lower grade, complex resources (Albanese and McGagh, 2011; Darling, 2011; Randolph, 2011). The trend is now towards mining and processing of low-grade and complex ores (Darling, 2011; Yingling, 1990). Variable geological and mineralogical characteristics, and complex mineralogy and texture can result in large variations in metallurgical response and also cause challenges in processing. (Carson, 1995; Lorenzen and Barnard, 2011; Yingling, 1990). Variability and the complex nature of ores are fundamental sources of risk that often cause the greatest economic impact (Dusci et al., 2007; Williams and Richardson, 2004). Hence it is important to effectively characterise these types of ore bodies and assess their processing performance (ie recovery, grade). To enable this, there is a need for the following: (i) characterisation of geological, mineralogical and metallurgical variability in the ore body; (ii) effective selection of drill core with characteristics that represent the range of ores in the entire ore body. Coal mass strength properties must be estimated to obtain realistic estimates of coal pillar strength. The limitations of existing techniques for approximating these properties are discussed. The coal mass is anisotropic. The Hoek and Brown approach to rock mass property estimation is modified to allow for this. This approach requires the Rock Mass Rating (RMR) for the strata. In the normal case where bedding is sub-horizontal, these major planes of weakness have little effect on the strength of pillars. As a result of this the RMR must be measured parallel to bedding. This means that a significantly higher rating than that usually obtained for coal is observed. The use of mass strength property estimates in extant empirical relationships is outlined. At high width to height ratios, an acceleration in the rate of increase in pillar strength with increasing width to height ratio has been observed. The empirical relationship developed by Salamon (the so called squat pillar formula) takes account of this. This relationship was found to have significant limitations with respect to its universal application. Modifications are made to Bieniawski's empirical formula to extend its use to large width to height ratio (squat) pillars. This new squat pillar formula has none of the disadvantages associated with Salamon's relationship. Strain softening was incorporated into non-linear finite difference numerical modelling to estimate pillar strengths. The technique outlined above is used to obtain peak coal mass properties. Modelled pillar strength was found to be sensitive to both peak and post peak mass strength properties. Post peak properties were found to be difficult to obtain and required some back analysis. Modelling results were used to estimate both the strength of squat pillars and parameters for use in a new squat pillar empirical strength relationship.

The Mt Muro gold and silver deposit in Central Kalimantan has been in production since December 1994. The geology is characterised by narrow high-grade lodes containing gold and significant amounts of silver. From a largely untrained workforce in the grade control department, production per crew and per geologist has tripled during the three years of production. Grade control drilling evolved from blast hole sampling to reverse circulation sampling. National geologists are trained in basic modeling procedures. A fully integrated reporting and reconciliation system was programed and implemented.

Discovery of the Vera-Nancy deposit in late-1995 followed 12 years of active exploration in and around the Pajingo Epithermal System, an andesite hosted veinfield covering an area of 150 square kilometres at the northern end of the Devono-Carboniferous Drummond Basin in North Queensland. Early exploration targeted open-pittable resources in the numerous auriferous veins and it was not until 1994 that exploration focus shifted to drilling to depths below about 100 metres from surface, which resulted in the Vera-Nancy discovery. That deeper drilling process is still at a very early stage of coverage of the epithermal system as a whole and substantial potential exists for additional discoveries.Drill-out of Vera-Nancy has to-date established a gold resource in excess of 1.4 million ounces. Mine development is proceeding via a twin decline system with first stoped production scheduled for August 1997.

Since the hypothesis of coal and methane outburst mechanisms based on elastic mechanics gives no consideration to time, it cannot give satisfactory explanation of the outburst occurrence and its development. A creep mathematical model of coal containing gas has been set up through creep tests and analysis under a condition of triaxial compression. Such a model can explain the phenomenon of coal and methane outbursts successfully. The tests proved that there is no essential difference between the rheological properties of prone outburst coal and non-prone outburst coal. Outburst can take place in any kind of coal if the rheological conditions of coal containing gas are met. The creep mathematical model provides a basis for establishing a comprehensive index of coal and methane outburst potential.

One of the features of modern life has been the increasing speed of change. We see this in many facets of activity, but in few areas more clearly than in the financial sector. The speed of communication and the advent of screen trading have made world markets one.We have titled this presentation "Cycles". It has been the conventional wisdom that Economies, Metal Prices, Equity Markets, etc. move in cycles. The objective of our presentation is to examine these cycles, to comment on the interrelationships, and to postulate where we are in The Current Cycle". We will draw conclusions as to where one should direct effort in the Mineral Scene over the next decade or so.Throughout this discussion we will use various terms to describe Time. The "Short Term" is typically meant to refer to the next six months: the "Medium Term" is one to two years; and the "Long Term" is the three to five year horizon.

The results of about 30 years of exploration and mining activities and research studies in the Kambalda mining district, Western Australia, have led to general agreement that the komatiite-associated Ni sulphide ores formed as a result of igneous processes (Ross, 1974; Ross and Hopkins, 1975; Gresham and Loftus-Hills, 1981; Cowden, 1988; Lesher, 1989 and many others). Despite this agreement, the controls on sulphide supersaturation and concentration of the resulting sulphide in a limited zone, remain uncertain and controversial. A major uncertainty is the source of sulphur in the ore deposits. Two principal sulphur sources have been proposed: 1. komatiite lava/magma (Hudson, 1972; Naldrett, 1973; Lesher et al, 1981; Cowden, 1988; Foster et at, 1995), and 2. sedimentary material (Groves, Barrett and McQueen, 1979; Lesher, Arndt and Groves, 1984; Lesher, 1989; Lesher and Campbell, 1993). Resolution of the uncertainty regarding the sulphur source is required for a complete understanding of the controls on ore formation, which in turn would significantly impact exploration strategies in the Kambalda mining district and elsewhere. This paper reviews the constraints on sulphur sources for the komatiite-associated Ni sulphide ores in the Kambalda mining district. The focus is on the general characteristics of the ores and surrounding rocks: individual ore deposits are not described, though specific examples are noted where appropriate. The stratigraphic and volcanic settings and geochemical (major and trace element and isotopic compositions) characteristics of the ore deposits and surrounding rocks are considered within the context of the competing sulphur source models, and future directions of research in the district are noted.

The design of mine openings and the assessment of their reserve are processes ihicl, require the routine manipulation of considerable amounts of data. A number of computer programs have been assembled to operate in a mini computer in order to provide some mechanical assistance for these processes. The system responds to plain language commands. which allows mining engineers to compute the reserves for a number of possible mining outlines, on an interactive basis. The products of Lower Miocene calc- alkaline activity on the east coast of Northland, New Zealand are described and contrasted with coeval rocks of the northern North Island. These rocks, the Eastern Volcanic Belt (EVB), occur in four main centres aligned north-west to south east as either plutonic/hyabyssal bodies or as agglomeratic piles and dyke intrusions. Significantly the plutonic members always occur to the north-west of the volcanic members, probably indicative of differential uplift along faults (upthrown to the north) aligned perpendicular to the EVB. A full basalt-rhyolite (diorite-granodiorite/ adamellite) spectrum is represented, with a temporal progression towards the silica-rich endmembers indicated by cross-cutting field relationships. Modal mineralogy parallels this trend, consisting of two-pyroxene, hornblende, biotite, quartz/alkali feldspar modal assemblages, and with rare occurrences of olivine and garnet-bearing volcanic phases. Chemically the EVB is medium-K, calc-alkaline (with respect to AFM and total-Fe/MgO vs. Si02 indices) and quartz and hypersthene normative. The thirty two available K-Prisotope dates indicate that activity was largely confined to the Lower Miocene (24Ma-16Ma), with an apparent younging towards the south east. Initial B7Sr/e Sr ratios (0.70335- 0.70679) are indicative of a continental- arc-type setting, however it is unlikely that a straightforward tectonic reconstruction for this part, of the Pacific Margin is possible. Evidence from xenoliths, both petrologic and isotope, within EVB magmas and from regional geologic studies suggests that hypotheses pertaining to a volcanic arc sited over a subduction zone may hold little relevance in this case. The review concludes that the EVB developed from the partial melting of a geochemically evolved lower crust as indicated by xenolith evidence. This occurred in response to thickening initiated by a short-lived obductive event in the uppermost Oligocene, and controlled spatially by pre-existing basement structure. Intra-suite chemical and mineralogic variation reflects not only crustal variability, but localized differences in physico-chemical conditions best illustrated by the rare occurrences of olivine and garnet.

In Australia, responsibility for abandoned mines can be unclear. With a few exceptions, state and territory governments have become responsible for abandoned mines on Crown land and private landholders are responsible for abandoned mines on freehold land. Abandoned mines pose risks and opportunities across the full suite of sustainability themes (environmental, human health and safety, socio-economic and community development) after mining ceases.Across Australia, there are more than 50 000 abandoned mines recorded, ranging in size from individual shafts to large polluting open cut mines. Addressing the safety and environmental impacts of these sites, as well as the socio-economic development opportunities of significant rehabilitation projects, requires the implementation of effective policies and programs. Qualitatively defined graded scales or ‘rubrics’ have been used for many years in student assessment and increasingly in the performance assessment of other sectors (Davidson, 2005). While risk-based maturity models have been used for safety prioritisation (Westrum, 1993; Hudson, 2007; DRET, 2008; Hancock, 2010) and evaluation of organisational development (Esteves et al, 2010), this paper is the first to adapt maturity models for the evaluation of abandoned mine rehabilitation programs in Australia.In this paper, we used indicators based on the national policy for abandoned mines to assess the maturity of abandoned mine programs. Fourteen elements of maturity were identified (Unger et al, 2012) under the five chapters of the national policy for abandoned mines (MCMPR and MCA, 2010). Jurisdictions were then evaluated and ranked on their maturity on the basis of information that was web-accessible. Information transparency of abandoned mines policies and programs is in itself one element of the maturity chart. Each jurisdiction in Australia was compared with one another and with a Canadian jurisdiction; the British Columbia (BC) Crown Contaminated Sites Program (CCSP), which represents leading practice (Unger, 2009; Unger et al, 2012).Our research found that in some jurisdictions in Australia there is little or no information on abandoned mine programs or individual abandoned mine sites on government websites, while other jurisdictions provided very detailed program information on planning, funding and implementation. Each jurisdiction in Australia, for which web-based information was available, had some elements where they were more mature than other Australian jurisdictions. For some elements, maturity ranked equivalent to the BC CCSP, but most Australian jurisdictions were less mature. There was only one element where a single Australian jurisdiction ranked higher than the BC program in maturity. Legacy mine policies, programs, priorities and funding information via departmental websites are easier to find in some jurisdictions, indicating progression toward greater transparency and more mature programs. A systematic approach to monitoring and evaluating abandoned mines programs is essential for accountability as it can demonstrate liability reduction over time and continual improvement. Pan Australian Mining lid installed a milling and gold leaching plant designed to process 2 million tonnes per annum of breccia sulphide ore. This plant was commissioned in January 1989. Since commissioning, increased ore reserves have been established and the plant has been expanded by the addition of one ball mill and several tanks to increase the design capacity to 3 million tonnes per annum. This additional plant was commissioned in May 1990, bringing the total number of mills up to three, each 4.5 m diameter x 7 m long. The paper details how milling rates have been increased at the expense of grind size to increase the capacity of the original plant from 2 million to 3.1 million tonne per year rate before the additional ball mill was Commissioned.

The present situation in the field of iron ore pelletizing is briefly described with particular view of the Lurgi/Dravo travelling grate process. To meet todays pellet quality requirements with regard to physical and metal- lurgical properties it is often necessary to add basic fluxing materials. It has been de- monstrated that for certain ores, basic addi- tives provide a considerable improvement in fired pellet quality. The production of self- fluxing pellets is becoming increasingly attractive. One Lurgi/Dravo plant is now in operation and another is under construction which were designed for the production of self- fluxing pellets. Self-fluxing pellets may be considered as the primary or exclusive blast furnace burden and the installation of a sinter plant is not necessary if the pellet plant-can handle all in-plant fines. Reference is made to the first pellet plant utilizing iron ore concentrate, in-plant fines and basic flux. The use of solid fuel for pellet indura- tion is discussed because of the increasing prices and possible shortages of heavy oil and natural gas. Since there is a strong tendency to increasing plant capacities, the design fea- tures of travelling grate pelletizing plants for productions up to 6 million tonnes are Discussed.

New Caledonia is a major metallogenic unit of the south-western Pacific Rim. Its mineral production is of world significance and it has an unusually well diversified mining history. New Caledonia's main metallogenetic potential is, however, associated with its unique ophiolitic complex and its important mineral- izations of nickel, chrome, cobalt and iron. Gold has been found in all the four basic tectonic elements of New Caledonia: the Central Massif, the West Coast basalts, the ophiolitic complex and the Caledonian North. Some analogies are attempted. Only the Caledonian North has supported mining operations (213 kg Au). More recently tenuous gold indications have been found within the ophiolitic complex, possibly associated with Oligocene plutonism.

Flue gases from electrical power station boilers, roasting, metallurgical and chemical plants could be treated by flotation using conventional flotation machines. The flue gases are introduced into the pulp instead of the air. The flotation media is a suspension of Ca(OH)2 or CaCO3 or a solution of NH4OH etc containing Na oleate as collector and frother. The SO2 and dust content of the initial flue gases were experimentally reduced by 100 to 1000 times in one flotation operation. The velocity of the flue gases through flotation machines could reach approximatively 0.4 to 0.5 m/s and more against 1.5 m/s reached in scrubber absorbers used for this purpose, but the quality of purification is expected to be better for flotation, which is essential for the cases of heavy polluted metallurgical and chemical flue gases. For some chemical plants the flue gases flotation media may be different and more suitable as compared to the above mentioned media. The proposed flotation method could be used for separation of dry grinded ores in the form of aerosols, with a realisation of flotation from a closed space (gas bubble in the pulp) onto the interface liquid-air where the particles are attached inside the bubbles.
