The Tuwu-Yandong Cu deposit, located in the East Tianshan mountains in the eastern section of the Central Asian Orogenic Belt, is the largest and economically most important porphyry Cu deposit in Xinjiang, China. It contains ~3 Mt of copper at an average grade of 0.46 per cent Cu and 0.2 g/t Au, with significant amounts of Mo and Ag. The deposit is mainly hosted in the Carboniferous Qi’eshan Group and plagiogranite porphyry, and is controlled by faults that are east–west-, north-west- and north-east-trending. Ore minerals in the Tuwu-Yandong deposit are dominated by pyrite, chalcopyrite and molybdenite, with minor bornite, chalcocite, magnetite, sphalerite and galena. Gangue minerals are mainly composed of quartz, sericite, chlorite, epidote, anhydrite, gypsum, muscovite, biotite, phosphorite, sphene, dolomite, actinolite, barite, albite and calcite. Based on the megascopic and microscopic textural relationships and mineral assemblages, five stages of hydrothermal alteration and hypogene mineralisation are recognized in the Tuwu-Yandong Cu deposit: the potassic stage, propylitic stage, phyllic stage, late veins stage and supergene stage. Since gold was first discovered, mining development in the West Australian goldfields has been heavily dependent on the location of groundwater both for potable and mineral processing supplies . The location of adequate and economic sources of water has been a constant challenge to both explorers and developers throughout the history of the goldfields. The provision of a piped supply from Mundaring in 1903 greatly alleviated pressure on scarce resources, lowered mining costs and permitted the orderly development of infrastructure. However, increases in the demand for water resulting from new mineral discoveries over the past three decades has led to renewed pressures for more local supplies to be established. Wide-ranging groundwater exploration took place in the late 1960's and early 1970's, also, more recently, in support of intensified gold exploration. The collation and interpretation of the hydrogeological data from the whole goldfields region indicates that despite a low mean annual rainfall of between 180 and 350 mm, quite marked differences exist between the rates of groundwater recharge in different parts of the area, In general, these can be shown to diminish in a southerly direction contrary to a trend towards increases in annual rainfall. Recharge rates are related mainly to differences in rock weathering pattern, geological structure and physiography. The same differences have controlled the pattern of groundwater salinity and the magnitude of groundwater storages associated with the palaeodrainages. In the vicinity of the northern and western watersheds with the Gascoyne, the superficial sediments tend to be thin, may have calcrete in the section and contain moderate storages of brackish or even fresh water. This contrasts with the lower regions of the palaeodrainages where calcrete is absent and deeper erosion has permitted the accumulation of relatively large thicknesses of fine-grained sediments which are saturated with hypersaline water and constitute substantial storages. Account must be taken of these characteristics if water supply sources are to be optimised to meet the growing demands for groundwater in the region.

The petrographic microscope plays an important role in the mineral dressing of nonmetallic materials. Petrographers and mineral technologists have evinced an interest in the technique developed, specifically, for mineral-dressing problems. The sinusoidal surface relaxation technique has been used to measure the surface self-diffusion coefficient of spectroscopically pure nickel over a wide temperature range under a hydrogen atmosphere. A kink in the Arrhenius plot has been observed. In the temperature range T/T 0.98 to 0.80 (T in O K and T, is the melting temperature) the average self diffusion coefficient is given by Below the temperature T/T,- 0.80a decrease in the slope of the log Ds us 1/T plot is observed. This is associated with a diffusion process characterized by a lower activation energy (-20,000 cal mole'') and smaller preexponential term (-10- sq cm sec"). A series of experiments were carried out at T/Tm = 0.61 under a hydrogen atmosphere of higher oxygen partial pressure than for the rest of the experiments. It was found that Ds was significantly depressed due to oxygen adsorption. This evidence supports the opinion that the low temperature process (activation energy -20,000 cal mole-') is unlikely to be due to oxygen adsorption. An interesting feature of the present data is that the transition temperature (T/Tm - 0.80) is a function of orientation. For a small number of crystals of measured orientation the transition temperature was observed to be higher towards the low index (100) pole. Theories of surface diffusion are briefly reviewed and it is concluded that the present reszuts are best explained by invoking a surface roughening process. GJOSTEIN has recently analyzed available surface diffusion data for a wide range of metals. He suggested that two mechanisms were operative for fcc metals, an adatom process at high temperatures and a vacancy process at low temperatures. Results for nickel can be summarized as follows. At low temperatures (T/T, - 0.3 to 0.44) under ultra high vacuum conditions, Melmed2 measured an activation energy Q of 21 kcal mole-' using field electron emission microscopy. At higher temperatures (T/T - 0.7 to 0.9) under a vacuum of 10- ' torr, Maiya and lakel measured y as 39 kcal mole-' using the multiple scratch smoothing technique. The present work was undertaken to try to find out if two distinct processes could be observed. High temperature results give Q about 47 kcal mole-': there is evidence also for a low temperature value of about 20 kcal mole-'. These measurements were all made under a hydrogen atmosphere, in the temperature range 860" to 1412°C. Concurrent with the present study Bonze1 and jostein> have also observed a break in the Arrhenius plot for the (110) surface of nickel. These measure- ments under ultrahigh vacuum conditions using the laser diffraction technique are in excellent agreement with the work reported here under hydrogen annealing conditions. THEORY The available surface relaxation techniques include single and multiple scratch smoothing and grain boundary grooving. The processes have been compared in detail by Gjostein for conditions where surface diffusion dominates6 and Mills et al? where volume diffusion dominates. In summary the relevant points are as follows. Grain boundary grooving gives an average Ds for the two surfaces adjacent to the boundary and this can, to some extent, be simplified by using symmetrical bicrystals. This technique has been used to study the effect of environment on Ds for silver and copper.'-'' Scratch techniques yield Ds values for the small orientation range exposed by the scratches (-2 deg). The multiple scratch process is preferable because the profile rapidly becomes sinusoidal and can then be interpreted theoretically in a relatively simple way. Also corrections for mass transport processes other than surface diffusion can be introduced easily. Mullins" considered a sinusoidal profile described the wavelength of the profile. "Distinction between Tripoli and Diatomaceous EarthMuch confusion exists both in the literature and in the trade as to the proper use of the terms tripoli, tripolite diatomeceons or infusoriai earth, and kieseigunr. All of these terms are often used synonymously by the trade and even in mineralogists and other reference books. Actually, tripoli is a ma- is a material of definite and distinct physical and chemical properties and all of the other terms belong to a different material with just as definite and distinct properties.Originally the term tripolite (loosely called tripole) was given to a diatomaceous cart from Tripoli in Northern Africa. Dena (J.D. Dana, A System of Mineralogy 6th Ed.) calls this material tripolite and gives no authority for the use of the terms tripoli. Between 1880 and 1890 the deposits near Missouri, were opened and the material placed on the market as ""Tripoli"" no doubt due to its resemblance in some respect to the original tripolite or diatomaceous worth from Tripoli. Since that time the term tripoli has with increasing definitenesss been reserved for the Seneca material and other siliceous of similar origin and physical properties, while all siliceous material of organic origin, containing dilators, has been called diatomaceous earth (or its synonyms infusorial earth, kiselguhr, etc.). Rottenstone is sometimes classed with tripoli."

"INTRODUCTION Corrosion of sections of piping used in steam-heating systems is frequently regarded as unavoidable, and periodic replacement is provided. Surfaces exposed to newly condensed steam appear to be especially vulnerable to attack. As an added nuisance, solid products of the corrosion tend to accumulate, plugging return lines.The trouble is ascribed in the main to carbon dioxide and oxygen 3/ 4 / 5/ 6/ dissolved in the condensate. When oxygen is the principal factor, the corrosion usually is characterized by pitting. Carbon dioxide tend3 to cause an acidic condensate which dissolves the metal more uniformly and produces the familiar failure at threaded areas where the piping is relatively thin, and where high stress may tend to acceletate the attack. Carbon dioxide enters the system with the feedwater, generally in a combined form such as carbonates and bicarbonates. Oxygen enters both with the raw feedwater-and as air leaking into lines under partial vacuum. The larger central-heating plants have sought to reduce corrosion by eliminating these gases as much as possible. A smaller plant ordinarily lacks the equipment and technical supervision required for this purpose."

CHUQUICAMATA, located in northern Chile in the Province of Antofagasta, is on the western slope of the Andes at an elevation of 9500 ft. Because of its position on the eastern edge of the Atacama Desert, the climate is extremely arid with practically no precipitation, either rain or snow. All primary blasting in the open-pit mine at Chuquicamata is done by the churn drill, blasthole method. Since 1915; when the first tonnages of importance were removed from the open pit, there have been many changes in the blasting practice, but no clear-cut rules of method and procedure have been devised for application to the mine as a whole. One general fact stands out: both the ore and waste rock at Chuquicamata are difficult to break satisfactorily for the most efficient operation of power shovels. Numerous experiments have been made in an effort to improve the breakage and thereby increase the shovel efficiency. Holes of different diameter have been drilled, the length of toe and spacing of holes have been varied, and several types of explosives have been used. Early blasting was done by the tunnel method. The banks were high, generally 30 m, requiring the use of large charges of black powder, detonated by electric blasting caps: Large tonnages were broken at comparatively low cost, but the method left such a large proportion of oversize material for secondary blasting that satisfactory shovel operation was practically impossible: Railroad-type steam and electric shovels then in service proved unequal to the task of efficiently handling the large proportion of oversize material produced. The clean-up of high banks proved to be dangerous and expensive as large quantities of explosive were consumed in dressing these banks, and from time to time the shovels were damaged by rock slides. As early as 1923 the high benches were divided, and a standard height of 12 m was selected for the development of new benches. The recently acquired Bucyrus-Erie 550-B shovel, with its greater radius of operation compared to the Bucyrus-Erie 320-B formerly used for bench development, allowed the bench height to be increased to 16 m. Churn drill, blasthole shooting proved to be successful, and tunnel blasts were limited to certain locations where development existed or natural ground conditions made the method more attractive than the use of churn-drill holes. Liquid oxygen explosive and black powder were used along with dynamite of various grades in blasthole loading up to early 1937. Liquid oxygen and black powder were discontinued because they were more difficult to handle due to their sensitivity to fire or sparks in the extremely dry climate. At present ammonium nitrate dynamite is favored because of its superior handling qualities and its adaptability to the dry condition found in 90 pct of the mine. In wet holes, which are found only in the lowest bench of the pit and account for the remaining 10 pct of the ground to be broken, Nitramon in 8x24-in. cans, or ammonium nitrate dynamite packed in 8x24-in. paper cartridges, is being used. This latter explosive, which is protected by a special antiwetting agent that makes the cartridges resistant to water for about 24 hr, currently is considered the best available for the work and is preferred over Nitramon. Early churn drill hole shots detonated' by electric blasting caps, one in each hole, gave trouble because of misfires caused by the improper balance of resistance in the electrical circuits. Primarily, it was of vital importance to effect an absolute balance of resistance in these circuits, the undertaking and completion of which invariably caused delays in the shooting schedule. Misfires resulting from the improper balance of electrical circuits, or from any other cause, were extremely hazardous, since holes had to be unloaded or fired by the insertion of another detonator. The advent of cordeau, later followed by primacord, corrected this particular difficulty and therefore reduced the possibility of missed holes. After much experimentation, the blasting practice evolved into single row, multihole shots, with the holes spaced 4.5 to 5 m center to center in a row 7.5 to 8 m back from the toe. Such shots were fired from either end .by electric blasting caps attached to the main trunk lines of cordeau or primacord. The detonating speed of cordeau or primacord gave the practical effect of firing all holes instantaneously. Double row and multirow blasts, fired instantaneously with cordeau or primacord, proved to be unsatisfactory in the type of rock found at Chuquica-

"Purification of metallurgical grade silicon (MG-Si) by the plasma-arc zone melting method (PZM) has been examined. The process consisted in the horizontal displacement of a molten zone heated by Ar- and 10%H2+Ar- plasma-arc under atmospheric pressure. This technique, especially using hydrogen plasma-arc, promoted the segregation of impurities from the head to the tail of the bar and the vaporization of impurities of higher vapor pressures. Metallic impurities such as Fe, Ti, Cr, Mn,. Cu, Al and Ca were reduced to less than 1 mass ppm at the head side of the Si bar. Non-metallic impurities such as boron, phosphorous, carbon and oxygen were also reduced by the zoning effect and, furthermore, by activated hydrogen atoms dissociated in the high temperature plasma-arc according to the following reaction: Q (in liq.Si) + 2H = H20. Plasma-arc zone melting with hydrogen plasma has been recognized to become an effective purification technique of MG-Si for the production of a low cost solar grade Si (SOG-Si).IntroductionDemand of high-purity Si for solar grade silicon (SOG-Si) is supposed to be further growing in the near future. The purity of SOG-Si required for the photovoltaic cell is more than six nines. An expensive semiconductor grade silicon (SEG-Si) with the purity of around eleven nines has been used to satisfy the demand. Development of techniques and processes for the production of a low cost SOG-Si is therefore necessary [l]. Although many purification techniques, such as directional solidification, plasmaarc melting and electron beam melting [1-6], and processes, such as carbothermic reduction of high purity silica [7], have been examined and proposed for this purpose, a more efficient and practical purification technique is still required.In the present work, the purification of MG-Si has been investigated using a plasma-arc zone melting (PZM) technique developed by the authors. Plasma-arc melting, which is well· known as a useful melting method for various metals and alloys, has been recognized to be efficient for refining and degassing several metals if hydrogen is added to the plasma generating gas, resulting in the so-called hydrogen plasma-arc. For example, deoxidation of Fe, Co and Ta [8,9], decarburization of Fe [9] and removal of metallic impurities from Zr, Ta and Fe [10-12] have been reported. This excellent refining effect is considered to be caused by dissociated and activated hydrogen atoms formed in the high temperature plasma-arc."

The effect of the acid anion on chalcopyrite (CuFeS2) leaching has been examined, under care-fully controlled conditions, in a range of acids in stirred reactors and columns at pH 1. Solution speciation calculations were performed to determine possible rate controlling species. The relative leach rates of Cu from chalcopyrite can be explained quantitatively entirely on the basis of solution speciation without the need to invoke any rational relating to surface structure/speciation. The rate of Cu release is first order with respect to Fe3+ activity. The stirred batch reactor experiments at fixed pH 1, Eh of 750 mV (SHE) and 75? showed that chalcopyrite leach rates were rapid in both HClO4 and H2SO4 with 100 % Cu recovery after 73h and 97 h respectively. However, the leach rate in H2SO4 was slower as compared to the HClO4 leach due to a slower increase in the activity of Fe3+ due to the formation of FeSO4-. The presence of Cl- in the leaches (HCl and H2SO4 with NaCl added) led to a low activity of Fe3+, due to the high activity of FeCl2+, resulting in very low leach rates. For the column leach experiments dissolution of Fe and Cu from the pH 1 HCl eluted chalcopy-rite column with quartz proceeded at several times the rate of any other column (chalcopyrite with and without quartz and/or pyrite leached with H2SO4, HClO4, HCl). Three observations indicate that galvanic interactions are not leach rate controlling role: a) The rate of leaching was not uniformly increased for the non-quartz containing columns where the two sulfide minerals, chalcopyrite and pyrite, are in physical contact as compared to the analogous quartz containing columns where they are not; b) there exists a reasonable correlation between the rate of Cu release and the effluent Fe3+ activity for all columns thus indicating that the leach rate is determined by solution speciation; and c) in all cases the proportion of Fe to Cu leached indicates preferential dissolution of Cu over Fe. However, the proportion of Fe to Cu is either the same or greater than expected on the basis of the single mineral columns. This indicates that chalcopyrite is not dissolving preferentially to pyrite.

With air emission limits for total particulates continually tightening, management of `potroom dust' or airborne particulates from aluminium smelting potrooms is of increasing importance. To better understand how settled and airborne particulates are generated within a potroom, methodologies have been developed to sample and analyse the compositional signature of dust, in relation to its sources. During a smelter case study, these methods allowed tracking of mineralogical phases in dust across a range of potroom locations, showing that the mechanisms of dust generation do vary spatially and vertically in a potroom. Such methodologies may also be applicable to other metallurgical industries.

High-purity materials have been used in producing as-cast, controlled, colony, and degenerate solidification structures in the Fe-FeS eutectic. Experiments disclosed that this eutectic can be classified as normal and has a natural morphology composed of rodlike iron particles dispersed in a matrix of iron sulfide. The metallography of the various structures was studied, and a preferred crystallography was revealed in the controlled specimens produced by unidirectional solidification. The orientation effects found in these latter specimens are an [001] fiber texture in the -mowth direction of the bcc iron bhase and a texture corresponding to bicrystalline behavior in the hexagonal iron sulfide, with the growth direction near to (2111) poles. The observed texture of the iron phase is considered as indirect evidence that the alloy un-dercooled by at least 75°C before solidification. The unidirectional solidification of binary eutectic alloys has produced materials which exhibit a structure and properties markedly dependent upon the solidification process. In many cases a controlled microstructure with pronounced metallographic and crystallographic anisotropy can be experimentally achieved by proper regulation and balance of the growth rate of the alloy, the chemical purity of the starting materials, and the thermal gradient in the liquid at the liquid-solid interface. The purposes of this investigation were to produce various micro-structures in the Fe-FeS eutectic for subsequent study of their magnetic properties and to correlate the different structures with the solidification conditions in order to obtain a better understanding of the structure of eutectics. The Fe-S equilibrium diagram exhibits a eutectic composed of nearly pure iron and stoichiometric iron sulfide (FeS1.00), with the eutectic reaction occurring at 988°C and 31.0 wt pct S.1 Calculations indicate that this eutectic should solidify with about 9.5 vol pct Fe and 90.5 vol pct FeS, which in turn suggests2 that the micros tructure will consist of a rodlike iron constituent dispersed in a matrix of FeS. This characteristic has in fact been revealed some years ago.3 Thus, controlled solidification of this alloy might yield a material whose micromorphology would consist of very small ferromagnetic iron particles, rod-like in shape and aligned parallel to one another, supported in a matrix of antiferromagnetic FeS. Such specimens, because of the magnetic characteristics of the two phases, would be interesting subjects of study as magnetic materials. Hence the magnetic properties were considered in detail and are reported elsewhere.4 EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The specimens of Fe-FeS eutectic were prepared from ultrapure iron (99.99+ pct) and high-purity sulfur (99.999+ pct). The iron was estimated to contain 60 ppm impurities (99.994 pct Fe) after zone purification.5 The ingots of iron were cut into chips, and the lumps of sulfur were ground into powder. In order to redice any nometallic impurities which might have accumulated during handling, the iron chips were annealed for 5 hr at 750° ± 10°C in a dry hydrogen atmosphere. Immediately after this treatment the chips were blended with the sulfur powder in eutectic proportions; the mixture was tamped into transparent fused quartz tubing and then vacuum-encapsulated under a pressure of 40 to 60µ of Hg. Because FeS expands upon solidification it was necessary to re-encapsulate the initial capsules so that oxidation reactions would be avoided when the inner tube cracked during solidification. For purposes of homogenizing the blended mixtures before solidification, the double capsules were heated to 750° ± 20°C and held for 20 hr; after this treatment the reacted product was weakly agglomerated. Each sample was then loaded into an apparatus for very rapid melting and freezing; this was accomplished by passing a molten zone through the specimen, using induction heating and a traverse mechanism. The resulting specimens solidified in the shape of the quartz tubing. Two sizes of specimens were used in this work, 18 mm diam by 100 mm long and 5 mm diam by 30 mm long. Metallographic examination of several ingots of both sizes after the above consolidation indicated no lack of compositional homogeneity and a random "as-cast" structure, because the travel rate was so rapid that unidirectional solidification was not achieved. Unidirectionally solidified specimens were resolidified in the apparatus shown schematically in Fig. 1, This equipment consisted of a kanthal resistance furnace mounted on the carriage of a zone-melting unit so that the heating element could traverse the length of the sample at a selected rate of speed. "A p-type Czochralski silicon ingot doped with boron was characterized for resistivity, minority carrier lifetime, interstitial oxygen, and metallic impurities. Analyses show a peak in resistivity and a dip in lifetime both occur 5 cm from the top of the ingot crown. This peak in resistivity deviates from the expected trend based on Scheil's equation for boron distribution. High concentration of interstitial oxygen in this area suggests that other oxygen-related defects, such as thermal donors and precipitates, may also be present here, and the observed peak in resistivity and dip in lifetime could be attributed to such defects. The low lifetime of 15-30 µs at minority carrier density of 7.5 x 1014 cm-3 is likely due to copper contamination.IntroductionSolar energy resources vastly exceed all other alternative energy resources, ensuring that solar power must play a crucial role in the evolving energy market. The economic viability of solar power in competition with other energy resources depends upon finding efficient, cost-effective, reliable, and controlled methods for solar cell production. In this regard, minimizing waste (such as material with unsuitable electrical properties that hinder solar cell performance) is a vital component of making solar cell manufacturing cost-effective. Impurities affect electrical properties of solar cell silicon in different ways (i.e. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6]). In this work we focus on the role of oxygen and metallic impurities. Understanding oxygen impurities in silicon is critical to solar cell development because oxygen has been attributed with influencing critical electrical properties including resistivity and minority carrier lifetime and thereby potentially hindering solar cell performance or rendering material unsuitable for solar cells.[1, 2] Furthermore, oxygen is a common impurity in the standard type of solar cell silicon, Czochralski (CZ) silicon, due to diffusion of oxygen from the silica crucible into the melt during crystallization. MOST OF THE key items in the bituminous-coal and Lignite industry declined in 1954 compared with 1953. Production, consumption, exports, average value per ton, men working, and days worked all declined; however, in the field of mechanization, the percentages mechanically loaded, mechanically cleaned, mined by auger, and mined by stripping all increased, as did production per men per day. Production.-The output of soft coal in 1954-391.7 million tons- was 14 percent less than the 457.3 million tons produced in 1953. The lower production in 1954 was due largely to a sharp reduction in consumption in the United States and to a drop in exports.

This paper is the result of a comparative study of ultimate coal analyses made and published by the United States Geological Survey. This study, at first casually undertaken to devise an acceptable classification of coals based on chemical analyses, was continued in connection with a microscopic examination of a number of the coals. The initial comparisons, made from a relatively small number of analyses, not only confirmed a previous conviction that the elimination of oxygen incident to the development of a coal is economically far more important than has been generally suspected, but also showed that oxygen is very nearly as harmful as ash in coal. The immediate purposes of the present study were: (a) To determine more definitely, from a comparative examination of a large number of ultimate analyses, the relative importance of oxygen as an impurity in various coals; (b) to illustrate the transition between various grades of coal of similar origin-transition mainly due to progressive devolatilization, brought about more or less directly by dynamic influences; (c) to ascertain the relative proportions of oxygen, hydrogen, and carbon in coking coals, especially with reference to a theory tentatively framed to explain the coking quality; and (d) to forecast the probabilities of successfully treating a large number of coals so as to render them amenable, in a softened condition, to satisfactory study under the microscope.

Drill pipe, and the connections used to join the pipe together, have had a long history of development and improvement. With the growing use of high tensile-strength pipe, the rotary shouldered connections used to join the lengths of drill pipe have become more critical. Fatigue-type failures of rotary-shouldered connections, or tool joints, have become a cause of much conern to operators and manufacturers. Most fatigue tests on tool joints have been made on the basis of bending moment applied vs number of cycles, rather than on the basis of stress vs cycles. A desire to learn more about the nature of stress in a tool joint due to bending caused a rather intensive experimental study to determine what actually happens to cause fatigue failure. It was known that a tool joint with insufficient make-up torque was subject to early fatigue failure. Therefore, the establishment of the relationship between make-up torque and allowable bending moment would enable a testing engineer to better correlate the results of various tests. The problem of calculating the stress in a tool joint due to an applied bending moment was complicated by: the effect of unknown stress concentrations; the applicability of the well known formula S = Mc/I; and the question of whether to use the combined cross section of the pin and box in calculating the moment of inertia I. TEST EQUIPMENT The test equipment consisted of the following. 1. A lathe modified to act as a fatigue machine for full-size tool joint or drill-collar specimens. 2. An adapter plate bolted to the headstock of the lathe and into which a short adapter was screwed. 3. Tool-joint pins on sections of drill collars bucked into the adapter. 4. A hydraulic load cylinder which rested on the bed of the lathe and applied bending moments to the joints. 5. Paper-backed strain gauges (FAP-12-12, 1/8-in. gauge length and A-5-1, 1/2-in. gauge length). 6. Eastman 910 contact cement for bonding gauges to joint and Epoxylite 222 waterproofing. 7. A 12-position switchbox, SR-4 bridge balancing unit connected to an SR-4 strain indicator to read the gauge output. 8. A four-channel Sanborn recorder, Model 150, was used as the readout instrument for part of the testing. The fatigue machine was well suited as a loading device. Because of the long lever arm available, the change of moment with distance was small; consequently, the vertical shear stress was small, less than 300 psi. Some difficulty was experienced with the hydraulic load cylinder at high bending moments due to leakage. The strain gauge equipment was simple and quite reliable. A 41/2-in. extra hole (E. H.) joint with "as machined" threads and shoulders and a 2 7/8-in. internal flush (I. F.) joint with copper-plated threads and shoulders were selected for testing because of their common usage in the field. In addition, the 4 1/2-in. E. H. was suitable because it had an inside diameter large enough to permit the insertion and accurate positioning of strain gauges without using special jigs, while the 2 7/8-in. I. F. joint required much lower bending loads to cause separation of the shoulders of the joint when made up to the recommended torque. In sampling dust laden air by drawing the medium into an inlet, some larger particles fail to follow the air and a true sample is not obtained. Inertia prevents particles from accelerating with the air as well as from turning sharp bends; also the particles' weight causes them to fall relative to the air. An analytic solution to the sampling efficiency calculation by Levin gives particle paths and sampling efficiencies for various particle sizes when the inlet can be treated as a point sink. However, the flow field in the neighborhood of an aspirating tube is quite different from a point sink flow. Employing Levin's solution in the outer field, trajectories in actual flow fields have been calculated by computer to locate the critical trajectories separating the entering particles I paths from those paths where the particles hit the tube wall or escape. Sampling efficiencies are presented in terms of 3 variables--a dimensionless particle size coefficient, a dimensionless orifice size coefficient and the tube orientation--for the no-wind case. Over most of the range of sampling conditions, the Stokes drag law can be used and dependence on the variable--particle Reynolds number--can be ignored. A procedure for achieving maximum efficiency in design of a sampler is proposed. Whether these results apply when typical room-sized eddies constitute the ?calm air? environment is not known.
