Erie Mining Co. is a 10.3-million-tpy pellet producer on the east end of the Mesabi Range 60 miles north of Duluth. Its complex includes facilities for mining, crushing, grinding and beneficiation in addition to a pellet plant and power plant. A 74-mile railroad links the mine and plant to Taconite Harbor on the shore of Lake Superior. The concentrate recovery ratio at Erie is about 1: 3, and this, along with stripping activity, makes it necessary for the company to mine nearly a million tons of material a week. At the outset, all crude ore mined at Erie was hauled entirely by rail, but with expansion into additional mining areas, the company made a gradual transition towards truck-to-rail haulage. Today, in Erie's 11th year of operation, over 50% of all crude taconite mined is transported by truck to loading pockets where it is transferred to rail cars. Future years will see more taconite moved in this manner. Thus, the company has an increasing interest in tire performance.

Nonsteady-state flow of slightly compressible liquids in porous media of non-uniform properties has been the subject of a number of recent studies. Most of these studies considered one-dimensional flow in systems with cylindrical geometry and with the properties of the porous medium varying with radial distance only. A. Houpeurt' studied the problem in its general form by examining the solutions of the differential equation, In Eq. 1, the permeability k and the porosity + are arbitrary functions of radial distance. Houpeurt concluded that, except for special forms of the functions k and the problem is not well suited for mathematical treatment, but lends itself to high-speed digital computation. Carslaw and Jaeger' discussed the solution of Eq. 1 for the case in which the permeability varies as a power of the radial distance. P. Albert3 studied analytically the pseudo steady-state solutions in systems of finite radial extent and non-uniform properties. He also obtained some numerical solutions for nonsteady-state flow using a high-speed computer. William Hurst4 examined the interference pressure drop due to a point sink located in an infinite system consisting of two permeability regions in series. In this case, the permeability changed at a radial distance r from the point sink. INTERFERENCE BETWEEN OIL FIELDS IN A NON-UNIFORM AQUIFER The interference pressure drop for oil fields located in an extensive aquifer of uniform properties is discussed in a number of places in the literature. This work considers the interference pressure drop for oil fields located in a non-uniform extensive aquifer comprising two regions of different properties as shown in Fig. 1. Region I of the aquifer extends from which is the radius of Oil Field A, to ar,,, where a>1. It has permeability k,, porosity +, and effective compressibility c,. Oil Field B is located in Region II which extends from ar, to infinity and has different properties from those of Region I, but the same formation thickness h. Region II has permeability k2, porosity and effective compressibility c2. The choice of this type of aquifer should not imply that it is of frequent occurrence. It is chosen primarily to illustrate the effects of non-uniform aquifer properties on oilfield interference. It is of interest to point out that a non-uniform radial aquifer in which both the permeability and the porosity are inversely proportional to the radial distance can be treated in a manner similar to a linear aquifer of uniform properties. The situation where only the permeability varies as the inverse of the radial distance is also amenable to analytical treatment. Both aquifers behave quite differently from a radial aquifer with uniform properties so far as the water influx and the interference pressure drop are concerned. METHOD OF SOLUTION The expression for the interference pressure drop in Oil Field B due to a constant rate of water influx in Oil Field A is developed in the Appendix. This is accomplished by the simultaneous solution of two partial differential equations describing the pressure in Regions I and 11. Hydrometallurgical recovery of rare earth elements (REE) from NiMH battery waste can be performed using sulfuric acid leaching followed by selective precipitation as double salt (REENa(SO4)2·H2O) by adding Na2SO4 as a precipitating agent. The formed double salts can then be further converted with NaOH solution to form REE hydroxides. However, present literature has paid little attention to how to minimize the consumption of reagents in this recovery process. In the current study, a process model was built using HSC Sim software, and metamodeling of the simulated flowsheet was conducted with the design of experiments (DOE), after which the basic functionality of the flowsheet was verified by experimental work, starting from sulfuric acid leaching of spent batteries. As the process is based on chemical circulation internally in the process, the objective was to investigate the accumulation of the elements in solution, specifically Na+ , K+ , SO4 2− ions and impurities liberated in the NaOH conversion step. It was found out that metamodeling could be utilized in obtaining first estimate of the process behavior, prior to any experiments. Flowsheet functionality with circulated solution was confirmed, obtaining at best 96.9% La recovery.

Innovations in communications and real-time information systems are providing industry opportunities to improve profitability. Real-time operating data is collected from equipment across a site or even several sites into a central server for secure PC and PDA-based Internet access. This paper includes discussion of how operating staff can use wireless devices to see equipment and processing data from anywhere throughout the mines and concentrators, and how management can view results from multiple mines, all in real time. Additional opportunities enabled through the remote access by equipment vendors or mining consultants is also presented, as well as an overview of typical benefits and current installations.

Over the past three years, Ring of Fire chromite ores have been tested extensively at both the bench scale and pilot scale at XPS Consulting and Testwork Services. Following bench scale testwork, two smelting campaigns were completed using a 300 kW DC arc furnace on different chromite deposits from the Ring of Fire. A ChemSheet model was developed to aid in the design and optimization of the recipes, and its predictions were confirmed with both the bench scale and pilot scale tests. A total of 7.5 tonnes of chromite ore was smelted at XPS. The results of the testwork demonstrate excellent reducibility for the ores tested with good reduction kinetics when compared with South African chromites.

In oil sands mining, tailings are voluminous unwanted by-products generated from extracting the desired mineral from the mined ore. Dyke construction and backfilling activities require well-managed techniques to facilitate progressive reclamation at the earliest opportunity. This directly affects the sustainability and profitability of the mining operation. This research introduces a goal programming framework that simultaneously optimizes the (1) production schedule with limited duration stockpiling and directional mining; (2) dyke construction schedule; (3) size, shape, and location of tailings-cells; and (4) mining and processing production targets. The results show that in creating in-pit tailings-cells designs, decreasing the mining-cells volume and increasing the number of mining-cells improve the net present value of the operation due to increased operational flexibility. The model generated a uniform schedule for ore and practical tailings-cells designs for backfilling activities. Integrating tailingscells optimization into oil sands mine planning and waste management ensures the efficient use of in-pit mined-out areas required for sustainable operations.

"Abstract Originally developed for ground improvement works, the deep mixing method (DMM) has increasingly been applied in recent years for the realization of soil and water retaining structures and as alternative to traditional foundation solutions. From practice, there is a real need for practical guidelines dealing with the execution, the design and the control of such applications. With the aim of developing such guidelines, the BBRI ‘Soil Mix’ project was initiated in 2009. Within this research project, deep soil mix (DSM) material from 38 Belgian construction sites has been tested. In spite of the large advances in the mechanical characterization of the DSM material, one major issue remains the representativeness of the typical core samples in comparison with the real scale behavior of the soil mix elements. There is among others the question of the influence of the unmixed soft soil inclusions on this behavior and the issue of the scale effect which must be considered in the design. In order to investigate these questions, 8 large scale UCS tests and 17 large scale bending tests have been performed on excavated soil mix elements. The present paper discusses results of this experimental campaign, presents some research perspectives and highlights different aspects related to the design of soil mix elements for the realization of retaining wall or foundation solution.INTRODUCTIONSince several decennia, the deep mixing method (DMM) has been used to improve the strength and deformation characteristics of weak soils. In recent years, deep mixing has increasingly been applied – in Belgium and in other countries – for the realization of soil and water retaining structures and alternative foundation concepts. With regard to the execution of the DMM, one can refer to the European standard EN 14679 on deep mixing (2005) that was elaborated under the umbrella of CEN TC 288 “Execution of special geotechnical works”. However, from practice, it has been experienced that this execution standard does not provide enough pragmatic information and guidelines, in particular for the more recent applications of the deep mixing method (with retaining and bearing functions). The same need by the sector for guidance rules linked to design aspects in the context of Eurocode 7 was experienced as well. With the aim of developing such guidelines and in order to provide feedback to the European standardization platforms, the Belgian Building Research Institute (BBRI) has initiated the BBRI ‘Soil Mix’ project (2009-2013) in collaboration with the KU Leuven and the Belgian Association of Foundation Contractors (ABEF), the Belgian branch of the EFFC. Within this research project, deep soil mix (DSM) material from 38 Belgian construction sites, with various soil conditions and for different execution processes (CVR C-mix®, TSM and CSM), has been tested (Denies et al., 2012)."

"Self-similarity is proofed to be a common feature when brittle material is comminuted, either in particle bed or single particle mode. Appropriate test work is well documented for particle sizes less than 7 mm in several publications. In contrast, almost no research has been done for coarser particles. The aim of this paper is to show that the fracture pattern of coarser material also tends to be self-similar. Hence, single particles of quartzite, granodiorite and dolomite were comminuted under compressive load. The focus was set on three different size fractions -3.15 +2.5 mm, -31.5 +25 mm and lumps -300 mm. According to the wide range of particle sizes, three different piston-die presses were used with a maximum compressive force ranging from 5 kN to 4000 kN. The force-displacement curves were recorded in order to calculate the specific comminution energy. Additionally, the -31.5 +25 mm size fraction was crushed in a laboratory scale jaw crusher and a roll crusher. Some authors report that the energy-size-reduction relationship of self-similar materials can be approximated by a linear function, which is independent of the comminution equipment. In their charts the slope can be seen as a product-size-independent grindability measure. Our tests show a self-similar breakage behavior when particles in a range of -300 +3 mm are comminuted in single particle mode. Furthermore, the products of the piston-die-presses and the roll crusher are similar to each other in a self-similar representation of the particle size distribution. The jaw crusher product, however, is not self-similar compared to the piston-die-press products. Finally, the linear energy-size-reduction relationships are confirmed for each fraction, but show size dependent slopes."

The Comstock Lode, a world-class precious metal vein district near Virginia City in western Nevada, U.S.A. (Fig. 1), produced 8.3 million ounces (0.28 X 106 kg) of gold and 193 million ounces (6.56 X 106 kg) of silver during the period 1859 to present (Bonham and Papke, 1969). More than 95% of production was from the Comstock fault, while the adjacent Silver City, Occidental and Flowery vein systems produced about $10 million (U.S.). Within the Comstock fault high-grade ore bodies, or bonanzas, were distributed over 2.3 miles (3.8 km) along strike and persisted to >3000 feet (>900 m) below the surface (Fig. 2). Bonanzas consisted of as much as 1.4 million tons (1.3 million tonnes) of ore grading up to 1.9 oz./ton (65 gm/ton) Au and 30 oz./ton (1020 gm/ton) Ag (Table 1). Some bonanzas occurred in the main Comstock fault plane while others, including the highest grade bonanzas, formed in hangingwall frac- tures. After 1880 most ore consisted of lower-grade vein material surrounding mined- out bonanzas and large volumes of mineralized vein and wall rock in the Comstock hanging- wall that were mined from open cuts. Deep mining was hindered by large quantities of hot water and bad ground which ultimately defined the limits of underground production. The widths and richness of Comstock bonanzas strongly influenced U.S. mining law, milling and underground mining methods, and securi- ties regulations that are in practice today. Within the district Mesozoic metasedimentary rocks, metavolcanic rocks, and granitic in- trusions are overlain by Miocene volcanic rocks (Thompson and White, 1964). Veins cut all lithologies. Aluminum hydride is a covalent, binary hydride that has been known for more than 60 years and is an attractive medium for on-board automotive hydrogen storage, since it contains 10.1 % by wt. hydrogen with a density of 1.48 g/ml. There are at least 7 non-solvated AlH3 phases, namely a, a', a, ?, d, e and ?. The properties of a-AlH3, obtained from the Dow Chemical Co. in 1980, have been previously reported. Here we present a description of the thermodynamic and kinetic properties of freshly prepared a, 0 and y phases of AlH3. In all cases the decomposition kinetics are appreciable below 100" C and all will meet the DOE 2010 gravimetric and volumetric vehicular system targets (6 wt% H2 and 0.045 kg/L). However, further research will be required to develop an efficient and economical process to regenerate AlH3 from the spent A1 powder.

Flotation feed density is an operating parameter which is currently not well understood. Most models of flotation only incorporate its effect on particle residence time, but it is likely to have additional effects within both the pulp and froth phases of the machine. Test work was performed in MetsoÆs 3 m3 RCS test rig to investigate the effect of flotation feed density on metallurgical performance. The rig was operated at Rio TintoÆs Northparkes operation using flotation feed and scavenger tail. For each feed, tests were performed at different feed densities, and measurements were performed to estimate the pulp and froth recovery as well as other key flotation parameters (eg bubble size, turbulence and froth stability). Results of this test work have shown that the pulp density does affect key parameters of the flotation process in both the pulp and froth phases. Pulp phase kinetic rates decrease at high density and this is attributed to a reduction in the turbulence within the cell. Froth phase recovery, however, improves presumably because of a stabilising effect due to a greater loading of solids on bubble surfaces.There is a need for more research to be done to better understand these interactions so that metallurgists can determine the optimum flotation feed density to use at a particular operation, or within a section of a flotation circuit.CITATION:Runge, K C, Tabosa, E, Crosbie, R and McMaster, J K, 2012. An original application of ANSYS simulated the forming of the temperature field of a massive casting from ductile cast-iron during the application various methods of its cooling using chills. The numerical model managed to optimize more than one method of cooling but, in addition to that, provided serious results for the successive model of structural and chemical heterogeneity, and so it also contributes to influencing the pouring structure. The file containing the acquired results from both models brings new and, simultaneously, remarkable findings of causal relationships between the structural and chemical heterogeneity and the local solidification time in any point of the casting. The determined relations therefore enable the prediction of the face density of the spheroids of graphite in dependence on the local solidification time. The calculated temperature field of 500x500x1000 mm casting of ductile cast-iron with various methods of cooling has successfully been compared with temperatures obtained experimentally. "In many mineral processing plants ore is reclaimed from a stockpile using multiple feeders. The discharge from these feeders is combined onto a single conveyor from which total tonnage is measured. Typically, operators set feeder output ratios to adjust the proportion of total tonnage drawn from each feeder. From a process control perspective, this system is not easy to control because the response time of each feeder depends on the distance from the feeder to the weightometer. This paper proposes a simple and elegant process control strategy to manage feeder ratio changes and the associated long and varying process dead-times. Changes in feeder speed are delayed and filtered to compensate for transport delays between feeders. The strategy was evaluated by simulation and installed on a mill feed system.ResumenEn numerosas plantas procesadoras de minerales, el mineral es extraido desde una pila de almacenamiento usando varios alimentadores. During 1936 the Russian oil industry made very satisfactory progress and, while not all difficulties of organization have been ironed out, the country is now assured of a supply of petroleum products in sufficient quantities and of quality demanded by modern motor equipment. The year 1937 promises to better by a wide margin the good showing of 1936. The statistics given in this paper for the first time take into consideration the varying gravities of crude oils of the several Russian oil fields instead of using a flat conversion factor of 7 bbl. per metric ton. It was found from the detailed study that the generally used average conversion factor should be increased from 7 to 7.25 bbl. per metric ton, the figure varying, of course, with the gravity of oil in the individual fields. Crude-oil production during 1936 is estimated at 201,500,000 bbl. as compared with 182,970,000 bbl. produced in 1935, an increase of 9.4 per cent. The greatest increase was again recorded in the Baku district, which increased its production by 10.9 per cent, from 141,257,000 bbl. in 1935 to 158,300,000 in 1936. Grozny district maintained its production at a level of about 23,000,000 bbl., but its old fields continued to decline and production was sustained by the development of newer fields. A great advance was made in drilling speeds and the total footage in 1936 reached 6,694,200 ft. as compared with 4,926,600 ft. drilled in 1935, an increase of 26.4 per cent. In older deep fields, producers were being completed at over 8000 ft.—a great depth for Russian drillers but two years ago. Several major discoveries were made in 1936. Northeast Caucasus.—Izberbash, east from Grozny and on the Caspian Sea, was the outstanding discovery, the initial production of the discovery well being around 3000 bbl. per day from about 5000 ft. The importance of the field is due to the large area of the structure, half of which, however, is under the sea, and also to its strategic location on the shores of the Caspian and near a trunk pipe line to the Grozny refining center. An active development program is being pursued in Izberbash and its 1937 production quota is set at 7,500,000 bbl. During the SME Board of Directors’ midyear meeting in Monterey, CA Aug. 25, I discussed trends in the construction aggregates industry. Many construction-material suppliers may not have yet fully internalized the changes that are taking place. But the changes are significant. And they have shifted the focus in the aggregates industry from “assets” to “people and innovation.” Construction-material suppliers serve many customers. A typical quarrying operation at Graniterock would have more than 1,000 customers, mostly civil engineering contractors. Along with the push toward people and innovation, there is increased emphasis on vertical integration from aggregates to ready-mix concrete and hot mix asphalt, to final construction. If a company is not vertically integrated, it will at least have strong partnerships with other firms, to deliver a high-quality finished project on time.

THE Dome ore-bodies are more or less isolated and are mined. by shrinkage stoping. An interwoven system of veins is mined at Hollinger '.1.nd requires close filling. Deep mining is the problem at McIntyre. Dome ore contains a large amount of free gold, which is recovered on blankets. An all-cyanide flow-sheet is \lSed in the Hollinger mill. Flotation concentration is an important feature of McIntyre mill operation. Therefore, these three mines afford an unusual opportunity to compare gold mining and milling methods. The purpose of this paper is to describe the conditions existing at the Dome, Hollinger, and McIntyre mines and to outline the mining and milling practice at each property. Figures 3, 4, 5, and 7 are reproduced from the Canadian Mining ]011rna/, September, 1935 (Young, A. W., Mining at Hollinger), and Figures 8 to 11 from the Engineering and Mining Journal, November, 1933 (Keeley, D. E., Development and Mining at McIntyre). Discussion by S. Serata and K. Fuenkajorn Background Results of the above study in the August 1991 issue of Mining Engineering offer valuable lessons in the solution of cutter-roof problems. The original study plan was initiated by the discussion authors to solve the problems using the "stress control method" of mining (Serata 1976, 1982; Serata, Carr and Martin, 1984; Serata and Gardner, 1986; Serata, Gardner and Preston, 1986; Serata, Gardnerand Shrinivasan, 1986; Serata and Kikuchi, 1986; Serata, Preston and Galagoda, 1987) However, the plan and the planner were changed to the arrangement reported in the paper. The change was considered reasonable at the time due to the mine engineers' uncertainties about the stress control method. Consequently, the basic principle of the study was shifted from the original stress control method to the method described in the paper, which will be called the "yield pillar method" for the purposes of this discussion. The paper convinces the reader that the yield pillar method fails to solve the cutter-roof problems. This doesn't mean that the stress control method also fails. Actually the contrary is true, as discussed below. Limitation of the yield pillar method The paper illustrates clearly how poorly the yield pillar method performs in solving the problem. The reason for this failure is the lack of the protective stress envelope needed to stabilize the cutter roof. Unfortunately, the protective envelope cannot be formed properly without utilizing the stress control method of mining. Changing the pillar size does not make much difference in the roof stability. Stress measurement The key issue is how to form the global stress envelope to make the gate entries safe for production. Therefore, measuring the stress condition of the ground around the mine opening is critically important to solving the cutter-roof problem, regardless of the method applied. With regard to the stress measurement, there is a serious question as to the reported stress state of [6 i = -51.7 MPa (-7499 psi), G2 = -44.5 MPa (-6458 psi) and 63 = -30.8 MPa (-4465 psi)]. It is mechanically impossible to have such a stress state at any location in the mine ground since the known initial vertical stress [o,,] is less than or equal to 800 psi. There may be a large stress state in the [61] direction, but that is possible only at the expense of the [63] value. Having the above stress tensors in the mine is simply impossible. The questionable, reported stress values could be attributed to the application of the overcoring method, which tends to produce erroneously large stress values in the extremely nonelastic mine ground. Stress control method The paper should be considered as a major contribution demonstrating the limitation of the yield pillar method. At the same time, the paper does not disprove the stress control method.
