Early Proterozoic ore deposits in the Verde district at Jerome, Arizona have produced 33.7 million metric tons of ore (1893-1975). The United Verde and United Verde Extension deposits produced most of the ore that yielded 1,644,323,100 kg Cu plus large amounts of Au, Ag, and Zn. These deposits are situated on the fractured and hydrothermally altered apex of a large submarine rhyolitic extrusive (Cleopatra formation). Precambrian lithologies are penetratively deformed and at Jerome the Fl folds plunge steep to the NNW. For the past two decades the volcanogenic model has superseded the replacement theory of ore formation.

Specific software tools for Statistical Multivariate Analysis combined with real time process data were applied to Concentrator Plant at Compañía Minera Doña Inés de Collahuasi SCM in Chile, basically to two Mill Lines, each one with one SAG mill (32’x15’8MW)and one Ball mill (22’x36’9.7MW). The main objective was to empower the operator actions using process patterns references instead of process variable set-points. Pattern clustering and the analysis of pattern deviations regarding normal or desired pattern, allows for improvements in process control and the further implementation of soft sensors for those variables not included in the initial model.

Introduction The Harzwasserwerke, a public body of the Federal State of Lower Saxony, supplies drinking water to an area bordered by Braunschweig, Bremen, the Northern and the Western edges of the Harz-Mountains. From the very beginning in 1928, the Harzwasserwerke have been systematically constructing reservoirs in the western Harz which have the function of collecting and storing the frequently occuring flood waters as well as providing drinking water. The Grane-Reservoir with a capacity of 45 Million cu.m., the last of the big reservoirs, was built in 1968-1970. A system of connecting tunnels effectively enlarges the natural catchment area of this reservoir and the surplus waters of the Oker and Radau valleys - where floods occur particularly during the spring - are being conducted to the reservoir. By building the 4.800 m long "Radau-Tunnel", the waters of the Radau valley will now also be used more efficiently and its surplus waters will pass to the Grane Reservoir via this new tunnel and the Oker-Grane-Tunnel which was finished in 1970. The Project The Radaustollen has been planned and put out to tender by the Harzwasserwerke as a conventional "Freispiegelstollen". The horseshoe profile has a cross-section of 8 m2. Lining was required only in disturbed rock areas; lining of the whole tunnel was not necessary. The gradient of the tunnel is 4 % 0 rising = 25 m over the total length of 4.800 m.

Introduction Coal mining in Alaska's interior, specifically in the Healy area, began as early as 1918 with the construction of the Alaska Railroad. Mining was originally limited to underground operations but has expanded to entirely surface operations. In 1943, the Usibelli Coal Mine was formed and started developing Alaska's first surface mine east of Suntrana (Usibelli Coal Miner, 1984). Production from the local coal deposits has steadily increased and, in 1978, surface mining of Poker Flats was initiated (Fig. 1). Currently, a 25-m3 (33-cu yd) walking dragline strips two coal seams, using an extended bench on the second pass. In addition, a fleet of trucks and shovels are used for coal removal and some limited overburden stripping. In 1984, a contract was signed between Usibelli Coal Mine and Sun Eel Shipping Co. in 1984. Since then, production has nearly doubled to more than 1.3 Mt/a (1.5 million stpy). This article will discuss geotechnical constraints on mining within the steeply dipping coal deposits that exist within the Poker Flats mining area. Specifically, the article will describe how the mining operation retriggered an historic landslide on the No. 5 coal seam (Fig. 2). And the article tells how a mine plan was developed that allowed the coal to be safely removed without inducing additional movement. Regional geology The coal-bearing group in the Nenana coal field is of Tertiary Age. It is overlain in some areas by several thousand feet of Tertiary gravels - the Nenana Gravels. In areas mined by surface methods, the Nenana Gravels have been eroded off, and up to 30 m (100 ft) of quaternary outwash gravels overlay the coal-bearing formations. The coal-bearing group is divided into five formations: Healy Creek, Sanctuary, Suntrana, Lignite, and Grubstake (Wahrhaftig, 1969). Lignite Creek lies on the north limb of a west plunging anticline. This has brought the Suntrana coal-hearing formations near enough to the surface to allow surface mining. Mining is presently in progress on the south side of Lignite Creek in the Poker Flats area. The coal-bearing formation is cut off to the south by a fault having perhaps several thousand feet of vertical displacement, with the upthrust side to the north. South of this fault, Nenana Gravels are exposed on the surface. The Suntrana Formation contain the minable reserves at Poker Flats. This formation is a repeated sequence of poorly consolidated pebbly sandstone near the bottom, grading through a silty fine sandstone to a footwall clay unit immediately below a coal seam cap. The footwall clays are high plasticity clays to silty clays. It has been reported that they contain 30% to 50% montmorillonite (Usibelli Coal Mine Inc., 1982). There are six coal seams in the Suntrana Formation, No. I (the lower seam) through No. 6. Only the top four seams are currently exposed. No. 3, No. 4, and No. 6 seams are the only mined seams. The No. 5 seam is very thin or not present. Portions of the undisturbed Suntrana Formation are overlain by up to 15 m (50 ft) of Quaternary outwash gravels or recent landslide rubble. The surface is overlain by a very thin layer of muskeg and isolated areas of permafrost. In many areas, the outwash gravels are found immediately below the surface muskeg. Numerous landslides have been documented along the north facing slopes of Lignite Creek (US Geological Survey, 1970, and Wahrhaftig, 1958). These appear to be surficial solifluction or skin flow types of landslides. In addition, deep-seated structurally controlled slides are also evident on both the north and south sides of Lignite Creek. Structural features Premining aerial photographs (Fig. 3) of the Lignite Creek slopes in the Poker Flats area indicate substantial evidence of deep-seated landsliding. The landslides noted in Fig. 3 are both inside and outside of the current mining area. Surface mapping and geologic exploration indicate that the coal seams are dipping out of the slopes within the noted slide areas. It is suspected that, historically, these landslides were triggered by undercutting of the toe of the slopes by Lignite Creek. And sliding it thought to have taken place on one or more of the clay beds underlying the coal seams (Golder, 1985). The slide areas are characterized by semicircular head scarps and slumped topography. Based on the premining photographs, these slides do not appear to have been recently active. This study was initiated to investigate the occurrence of cinnabar in the oxidation zones of some mercury sulfide deposits. Seven mines or mine districts were visited and samples were taken from both the oxidation and primary zones of these deposits in order to compare their mineralogies and assess Vie chemical changes that took place during oxidation. As a result of the study of these specimens, several limiting factors are suggested for the chemical environments and processes active in both the deposition and oxidation of mercury sulfide deposits. The Mt. Jackson mine, near Guerneville, California (location map, fig. 1), was studied in some detail and forms the basis of this paper. The mine has not heretofore been described in detail in the literature. The Mt. Jackson mine is considered typical of mercury sulfide deposits occurring at the faulted boundaries of serpentinite bodies and enclosing sediments. Such mines are common in the California and Oregon Coast Ranges? Specimens collected by the author from the New Idria and New Almaden districts, the Mt. Diablo, the Culver Bear, and the Buena Vista mines in California, and the Opalite district (Cordero and Bretz, mines) on the Oregon-Nevada border were studied for comparison with the Mt. Jackson samples. The mine description, maps and sketches were composed from field maps kindly provided by Francis Fredericks, consulting geologist to the Sonoma Quick-silver Mine Inc. during the author's visit in 1962. Additional information was obtained from the company maps and minor corrections and interpretations were added by the author.

The bulk handling industries have long been plagued with problems in their attempt to obtain one of their major goals - the maximum efficiency for which a bulk handling flow system was designed. Mentor Dynamics Ltd. is an international firm with offices in Canada, Japan, and the United States. Mentor Dynamics Ltd. is in the business of solving the "why not" of a system and engineers the solution for the problem. Studies of the varied difficulties encountered with bulk flow systems indicate that 90% of all flow problems fall into one or more of the following categories: abrasion, impact, sticking, and/or inadequate design. These problems can occur with a myriad of bulk solids: coal, gypsum, aragonite, phosphate, fly ash, ore. Solutions to the problems are as varied as the problems. The proper lining material, ceramic, urethane, rubber, and/ or ultra high molecular weight polyethylene, must be coupled with the correct fastening system, annular ring and 'F' cap, weld washer, button head fastener, weld studs and/or nuts and bolts.

The purpose of this paper is: 1) To summarize the capabilities and some of the limitations of the existing mine planning software. 2) To provide some guidelines for acquiring the software. 3) To identify problems and challenges in terms of how to justify increased use of computers (particularly the 32-bit microprocessor based super micro computers), for various activities related to a mining operation No attempt has been made to review the contents of available software packages in detail. Also the scope of this paper is limited to mine planning related computer applications. Applications related to accounting, inventory control, preventive maintenance, equipment scheduling, etc. have not been covered.

This paper summarizes the direct operating cash costs for the Barrick Mercur open pit gold mine. A comprehensive, detailed system of cost management has been in effect for the life of the Mercur operation. This system provides the basic data for operations control and is the basis for drafting budgets as well as analyzing impact of change on operations costs. The ore body is complex geologically and metallurgically, requiring operators to pay close attention to mining and processing costs. The cost history provides data which enables analysis of changes in production levels, aging of the mine production fleet, and the impact of specific cost changes through time.

In the northwestern part of the Netherlands lies the deepest solution salt mine in the world. The company operating the mine is Frisia Zout bv (part of the K+S group). Extracting the NaCl from caverns at a depth of nearly 3000 m has a lot of challenges. Continuously monitoring, among others, the flows, pressures and salt concentrations is necessary to safely and economically mine the salt. A system has been set up at Frisia to be able to monitor the data from a distance. Data has been put in graphs to monitor the trends daily. All gauges are also continuously monitored to maintain accuracy. With this system a better understanding of the mining process has been made and has led to many optimizations.

This paper examines the effects of different block dimensions and cone bases on the economic open pit limit design based on case studies on a coal deposit consisted of two west- east elongated, near vertical thin seams starting with a base model dimension of 200x170x50 (NX*NY*NZ) with a block dimension of 10mx5mx4m (DX*DY*DZ), the blocks were combined along easting, northing and elevation directions. Two cone bases were used, one with a base radius of 10 meters, the other with a base radius of 0. Two pit design algorithms, one is the floating cone algorithm, the other is an optimum algorithm, were used to see which one of the two pit design algorithms is more sensitive to block dimension and cone base variations. The results are presented and analyzed.

Powell Bend Mine, located in Bastrop County, Texas, is owned by the Lower Colorado River Authority (LCRA). The mine is operated under contract by the Powell Bend Mining Company (PBHC), an affiliate of Pittsburg and Midway Coal Mining Co., and produces 210,000 tons of 6500 BTU/LB lignite per year for LCRA's Fayette Power Project near La Grange, Texas. PBHC operates the surface strip mine one shift per day, five days per week with a total of nine employees; six operations/maintenance and three office/supervision. The mine's productivity in 1988 averaged 100.3 tons per manshift using an l8-cubic yard dragline to uncover the lignite. Delivered cost to LCRA, F.O.B. mine, is $6.11 per ton, which includes water control and final reclamation.

ST Equipment & Technology LLC (STET) has developed a novel processing system based on tribo-electrostatic belt separation that provides the mineral processing industry a means to beneficiate fine materials with an energy-efficient and entirely dry technology. In contrast to other electrostatic separation processes that are typically limited to particles >75μm in size, the STET triboelectric belt separator is suited for separation of very fine (<1μm) to moderately coarse (500μm) particles, with very high throughput. The STET tribo-electrostatic technology has been used to process and commercially separate a wide range of industrial minerals and other dry granular powders. Here, bench-scale results are presented on the beneficiation of low-grade Fe ore fines using STET belt separation process. Bench-scale testing demonstrated the capability of the STET technology to simultaneously recover Fe and reject 2 from itabirite ore with a D50 of 60μm and ultrafine Fe ore tailings with a D50 of 20μm.The STET technology is presented as an alternative to beneficiate Fe ore fines that could not be successfully treated via traditional flowsheet circuits due to their granulometry and mineralogy. INTRODUCTION Iron ore is the fourth most common element in earth’s crust [1]. Iron is essential to steel manufacturing and therefore an essential material for global economic development [1-2]. Iron is also widely used in construction and the manufacturing of vehicles [3]. Most of iron ore resources are composed of metamorphosed banded iron formations (BIF) in which iron is commonly found in the form of oxides, hydroxides and to a lesser extent carbonates [4-5]. A particular type of iron formations with higher carbonate contents are dolomitic itabirites which are a product of the dolomitization and metamorphism of BIF deposits [6]. The largest iron ore deposits in the world can be found in Australia, China, Canada, Ukraine, India and Brazil [5]. The chemical composition of iron ores has an apparent wide range in chemical composition especially for Fe content and associated gangue minerals [1]. Major iron minerals associated with most of the iron ores are hematite, goethite, limonite and magnetite [1,5]. The main contaminants in iron ores are 2 and Al2O3 [1,5,7]. The typical silica and alumina bearing minerals present in iron ores are quartz, kaolinite, gibbsite, diaspore and corundum. Of these it is often observed that quartz is the mean silica bearing mineral and kaolinite and gibbsite are the two-main alumina bearing minerals [7]. Iron ore extraction is mainly performed through open pit mining operations, resulting in significant tailings generation [2]. The iron ore production system usually involves three stages: mining, processing and pelletizing activities. Of these, processing ensures that an adequate iron grade and chemistry is achieved prior to the pelletizing stage. Processing includes crushing, classification, milling and concentration aiming at increasing the iron content while reducing the amount of gangue minerals [1-2]. Each mineral deposit has its own unique characteristics with respect to iron and gangue bearing minerals, and therefore it requires a different concentration technique [7].

The US Bureau of Mines conducted, through joint funding with the Colorado Mining Association, large scale oil shale rubble fire tests to investigate flammability characteristics and different methods of extinguishment. Ignition of large rubble piles was easily accomplished. Foam blankets could he used to control surface flames. The results of these large scale tests confirmed that water was effective but not particularly efficient in extinguishing deep seated oil shale fires. It took up to 1.7 times as much water to extinguish afire as anticipated on the basis of a simple cooling model, assuming 100% utilization.

Current scrubber capacities vary from 1.89 to 4.72 m3/s (4,000 to 10,000 cfm), and there is interest in using scrubbers with capacities up to 6.61 m3/s (14,000 cfm). This paper describes research to compare the effectiveness of blowing and exhausting face ventilation systems using high-capacity scrubbers with flows up to 6.61 m3/s. Tests were conducted in a surface ventilation gallery with exhaust and blowing systems operating under similar conditions. The mining machine was equipped with a machine-mounted scrubber. Methane gas was released at constant flow at the mining face and measured at several face locations. Effectiveness of exhausting and blowing systems was compared by determining average face methane concentrations. For each operating condition tested, blowing ventilation was more effective than exhausting for controlling face methane levels. Raising scrubber flow to 6.61 m3/s reduced methane levels for both blowing and exhausting systems.

The Marysvale volcanic field of west-central Utah contains large areas of argillically altered rocks (fig. 1) that, in turn, enclose smaller areas of fine-grained, medium-grade, replacement alunite deposits and coarsely crystalline, high-grade vein-type alunite deposits. The largest replacement alunite deposits are [ ] located peripheral to a 23-m.y.-old monzonite stock called the Central Intrusive (fig. 1). The deposits formed in near-surface, highly oxidizing environments at the tops of hydrothermal plumes that were spaced irregularly around the stock. The deposits are horizontally zoned from alunitic cores through kaolinitic to propylitic envelopes. Vertically, characteristic alteration minerals progress from a pyrite-propylitic alteration assemblage at the base, upward through alunitic, jarositic, and hematitic assemblages to a flooded silica cap as shown on figure 2. The silica caps are cut by hydrothermal explosion breccias. d34Sso4 values of + 11.5 to + 15.4 permil indicate that sulfur in the hydrothermal plume was derived from underlying Mesozoic evaporites. The sharp upward transition from pyrite- propylite to alunite probably marks the paleowater table, and the top of the flooded silica cap represents the paleoground surface. Basin-Range extensional tectonism began shortly after alteration, and buried the replacement alunite deposits in basins beneath sediments eroded from uplands. The deposits were only recently exhumed.

The pegmatites of the Black Hills of South Dakota are the coarse-grained differentiates of the Harney Peak Granite. The Harney Peak Granite was intruded into the Pre-cambrian schist and quartzites and resulted in the Black Hills uplift. In the outer adzes of the granite intrusion occur the pegmatites. In the zoned pegmatites, representing the most highly differentiated portions of the parent magma, occur most of the minerals produced from pegmatites. These are of economic importance and they are the subject of this paper. The various mineral products will be taken up separately.

The, principle purpose of applying control to any process is to improve -its profitability. Even when considering the impact of a plant on its surrounding ecology this is still, true, since the sanctions felt most immediately from violations of the regulations are the economic penalties or fines which result. &apos;Economic performance can be improved within a plant in several ways. Steps can be taken to cut the cost or quantity of resources (power, water, steam, reagents) consumed per ton of throughput. Alternatively the operation of the plant can be changed so as to increase product yield per ton of throughput. Or the cost of labor and plant overhead per ton of product can be reduced by raising the total &apos;throughput, assuming-that the increased amount of product can be sold for the same unit price. In designing a program to improve plant performance, all three routes should be borne in mind. To maximize the return on investment over a longer period, it is also desirable to set up a comprehensive plan of improvement, equipment being specified at each step in the implementation so as to ensure that it fits in with later requirements later implementation being either by means of modular additions or by having the necessary interfaces built into the original equipment. It is much cheaper in the long run to buy features which have been factory-installed, than to have to make provision for their later addition in the field. This paper examines some ways of improving plant performance by the application of various process control techniques using both analog and digital con¬trol equipment. A general philosophy of application is suggested and specific examples described.
