SINCE the "Days of Forty-nine" California has been the premier gold producing state of the union. The greatest production was recorded in 1.852, during which year the state's placer and lode deposits yielded over 81 millions. This peak was followed by a steady decline to about 12 millions during the years 1888 to 189.3, a period marked by the cessation of gravel mining. After 1893, production increased to a new peak of over 22 million in 1915, thereafter decreasing steadily to something over 13 million in 1923. Today; California's gold production shows a decrease of 84 per cent. as compared with the output of 1852, and a decrease of 41 per cent, as compared with 1915. It is not a difficult matter to find the causes of this more recent decline. In 1916 there began an upward swing in the cost of labor, which represents approximately 60 per cent. of the cost of mining, and in the price of supplies, representing the remaining, 40 per cent. This rise continued until 1922 and since that year there has been no decided tendency either upward or downward. The increase in the cost of mining since 1916 is variously estimated at from 50 to 75 per cent.; the price of gold has remained fixed at $20.67 per oz. This condition resulted in wiping out the profits of the low-grade operations which, in recent years, have constituted California's main source of supply of gold ore. It is now predicted that there will be renewed activity in California- gold mining. What are chances for the materialization of this forecast? A boom or even a revival of gold mining must of necessity be brought about or accompanied by one or more of the following factors: 1. A decrease in the cost of mining. 2. An increase in the price of gold. 3. New capital for development. 4. The discovery of new deposits. 5. The revival of hydraulic mining.

Several capital cost estimation procedures are reviewed briefly, although the factored estimate method is discussed in preference. A table of cost versus equipment parameter data is provided, where the cost may be updated from the current value of the M&S cost index for mining and milling. Cost equations are useful to prepare computer programs which perform capital cost calculations. The use of the factored estimate method is illustrated.

September steel production established a new record for a 30-day month with 9,034,000 tons. It was the highest of any month since March. Output of ingots and steel for castings was 535,000 tons more than was poured in August 1952, and 373,000 tons over the total for September 1951. Prime Minister Daniel F. Malan touched a gold button to start South Africa' a first uranium plant into production on the premises of the West Rand Consolidated Gold Mine, near Krugersdorp, Transvaal, 25 miles west of Johannesburg. Uranium oxide is being extracted from mine tailing after removal of the gold. Thirteen gold mines in the region are scheduled for uranium production. Defense Materials Procurement Agency signed an agreement-with the Bagdad Copper Corp., Bagdad. Ariz., for expansion of the firm's facilities to enable delivery of at least 27 million lb of copper a year and 91,0000 lb of molybdenite. It is said that the company will spend about E million on the expansion.

The production of oil is accomplished as a result of its displacement from the reservoir by either gas or water, and the amount of oil recovery is limited by the extent to which the displacing gas or water accumulates. This paper describes the mechanism by which the displacement is effected and the advantages of water over gas as a displacing agent. In the light of the results of experimental observations of the flow of mixtures of oil and/or gas and/or water through sands, certain conclusions are drawn relative to the changing character of the displacement as depletion proceeds, and on the effects of the properties of the fluids and of producing conditions on the ultimate oil recovery. Introduction Crude oil has no inherent ability to expel itself from the pores of the reservoir rocks in which it is found; rather, it must be forcibly ejected or displaced by the accumulation of other fluids. Accordingly, a knowledge of the mechanism by which one fluid is displaced by another is essential to an understanding of the fundamental process by which oil is recovered. The displacing fluids normally available are gas and water, either or both of which may exist originally associated with the oil in a potentially usable form or may be supplied to the reservoir from external sources. Gas is present in most oil reservoirs. If the quantity is relatively small, it may exist originally completely dissolved in the oil, but if the quantity exceeds that which may be held in solution by the oil at the prevailing pressure, the excess will be found in the free state. Most reservoir sands appear to contain some water,l and in the majority of fields the oil is trapped in the structure and held over water. In certain conditions the entrapping water may advance into the oil zone and displace the oil therefrom. This paper describes in a qualitative manner some of the characteristics of the displacement of oil by either gas or water, with an attempt to elucidate somewhat the mechanism by which such displacement is effected. Role of Dissolved Gas When the pressure on an oil containing dissolved gas is reduced to the saturation or bubble-point pressure, gas escapes from solution and expands, imparting to the oil-gas mixture a high degree of expansibility and causing it to flow in the direction of reduced pressure. This expansibility has frequently been attributed to the oil; closer analysis, however, reveals that as gas escapes from solution the oil phase actually. contracts. Hence, it is the accumulation and expansion of the liberated gas that supplies the propelling force for the oil. It has been shown experimentally2-5 that within certain limits a sand containing oil, gas and water will permit the simultaneous flow of all three; the readiness with which they may flow depends upon the characteristics of the sand, of each of the fluids, and upon the relative amounts of the fluids in the sand. The constitution of the iron-silicon alloys containing from 14 to 33.4 weight per cent silicon has been studied by a number of investigators, whose results have been reviewed in a monograph published by the Engineering Foundation1. In these previous researches, the solubility of silicon in iron was determined by thermal, microscopic or magnetic methods and the compound Fe3Si2 was reported to be stable at temperatures from 0 to approximately 1030' C. This paper describes the results of an X-ray investigation of the solubility of silicon in iron and gives data which prove that the Fe3Si2 phase is unstable below 825" C. In order to obtain the present results on the solubility of silicon in iron, the authors have utilized the lattice constants of the alpha-phase iron-silicon alloys given in a previous publication2, and also some additional data which will subsequently be described. Materials and Methods The alloys used in this investigation are listed in Table 1. They were prepared in 30 or 50-gram ingots by melting specially purified silicon and electrolytic or carbonyl iron in alundum crucibles under a pressure of less than 1 mm. of mercury. The purity of the silicon, electrolytic and carbonyl irons has been given by the authors in previous publications2, 5. The ingots were homogenized in vacuo at approximately 1000" C. for at least 96 hr. and then slowly cooled. The homogenized specimens were ground to powder in a hardened steel mortar. This powder was passed through a 150 or 200-mesh screen and sealed in evacuated quartz, Jena or Pyrex glass tubes and heat-treated as noted in the various tables. Specimens 23A, 24B, 33 and 35 and the specimens heated for one month at 700" C. were quenched by quickly removing the tubes from a horizontal tubular furnace and dropping them into water. The other specimens were quenched by means of a drop-quenching device, which has been described previously3.

IN March 1949 the Calaveras Cement Co. was sued by five landowners whose properties are located in the vicinity of the plant. These landowners-all of them cattle ranchers-sued for dust damages of $120,338 and for an injunction preventing the company from casting dust upon their properties in injurious quantities. The issue was split, the jury deciding the amount of damages and the court handling the injunction features. The action came to trial before a jury in April of that year and resulted in damages being awarded in the amount of $7,508. A month later the court issued its injunction requiring recovery of stack dust to an 87 pct minimum.

The fact that intrusion of water into oil wells can be prevented by treating the sand adjacent to the well seems to have been only recently recognized. Swan1 mentions the process of solidifying naphthalene in strata. R. Van A. Mills2 recommends the use of materials such as sodium silicate and sodium carbonate, which react with oil-field water to form solid plugging agents. When a well is drilled in a new field the oil sands are found essentially devoid of water (Fig. 1). Unless a completely impermeable break exists over wide areas in the field, no water is found above the lower limit of the oil zone and no oil is found below the upper limit of the water zone. After considerable oil has been taken from the well, however, it is almost universal experience that water intrusion occurs. This intrusion may be of two kinds. The water may follow a path parallel to the bedding planes of the producing formation through loose streaks in the pay sand, as shown in Fig. 2, or the water level of the field may rise and enter the well by coning (Fig. 3). Water entering from the side is called "edge water," and that coming in from the bottom is called "bottom water.'' Measurments of the transient photoconductivity in fillns of amorphous selenium with blocking- contacts haue been used in studying the transport properties. The results shozu that the transport of free carviers cannot be explained in terms of a model using bulk trapping. Measurments of the photocurrent-applied field characteristic as a unction of sample thickness do not pvoduce the scaling lau,s approps-iate lo a range-limited model. THE investigation described here was undertaken to explore the mechanisms of transport in amorphous selenium films. These films are used in xerography, where a photoconductor is charged electrostatically and then exposed to light to form a latent image. The sensitivity that one can expect when operating in this mode is directly related to the transport properties of the photoconductor material. The study of photoconductivity at high fields in insulating materials is often complicated by contact effects. Injection from the contacts can easily mask the fundamental transport processes that are being studied. A technique is described in this paper that allows a study of photoconductivity and transport processes in amorphous selenium films without the complicating effects introduced by contacts. Accordingly, the samples are prepared using insulating films between the sample and the metal electrodes, where the electrodes are capacitively coupled to the surfaces of the sample under study. A transient measurement is performed with pulsed light, and the photocurrent measured near the beginning of the pulse before the field is distorted by polarization at the blocking elec- trodes. A similar method has been described by Manyl using pulsed electric fields in studying the high field transport in insulating cadmium sulfide. EXPERIMENTAL It is possible to eliminate undesirable contact effects and maintain uniform high fields across the sample by using blocking electrodes and measuring the current-field characteristic under transient conditions. The sample configuration is shown schematically in Fig. 1. Each of the gold electrodes is separated from the amorphous selenium film by a layer of insulating plastic (Formvar) approximately 2000~ thick. The electrode on the front surface is semi-transparent to allow illumination of the sample. The whole configuration is mounted on a KEL-F substrate, which is a transparent insulating plastic having a thermal expansion coefficient that allows low-temperature measurements without cracking the selenium film. Fig. 2 shows a block diagram of the measurement apparatus. Light was obtained from a 450-w Xenon arc lamp, the intensity of which was controlled by stainless-steel screen filters and monitored by a pho-tomultiplier which was calibrated periodically against a thermopile. A camera shutter operated at 1/200 sec provided the light pulse and a synchronized signal to the oscilloscope. The photocurrent transient is ob-served with a high-speed picoammeter (response time of 1 msec) the output of which is displayed on an oscilloscope. The applied voltage is constant throughout the transient measurement. The selenium films were prepared by evaporation of four 9's pure selenium shot supplied by Canadian Copper Refiners. Spectrographic analysis showed about 1 ppm of Te and Fe, 5 ppm of C1, and 0.05 ppm

IT is likely that among most races, owing to the ease of finding and working clay, the making of clay utensils was learned earlier than the molding of metal implements. The ancients made good pottery and durable brick in kilns that wasted fully one-half the heat and spoiled fully one-fourth of the ware; and, taking the clayworking industry as a whole, we are doing the same today. The chemical and physical changes involved in the burning of clay are so many and vary so much with the composition of the clay that it is not surprising that the rule-of-thumb methods so commonly employed fail to give uniform results. In its passage from plastic clay to the vitreous or stonelike character the mingled minerals and accidental organic impurities of which the clay is blended must pass through four stages, the second and third usually overlapping, and the fourth often beginning before the third is complete. These stages in their order with the rising temperature are drying, dehydration, oxidation, vitrification. In the first part of the drying stage, usually accomplished in part outside the kiln, the water mixed with clay is dried out at temperatures not much exceeding the boiling point of water. In the later part of this stage, within the kiln, the hygroscopic water, absorbed from the air is expelled at somewhat higher temperatures, this stage being known as watersmoking. Some clays are very sensitive to temperature during the drying stage and if the temperature exceeds 100°, the ware becomes checked. Other clays may be dried more rapidly without danger. In down-draft kilns, the draft is slight during the watersmoking stage and the water driven off from the top rows condenses on the ware in the bottom of the kiln, with the result that high temperatures are likely to be reached at the top of the kiln before the bottom is fully dry. The lag in temperature of the bottom persists to the second stage in spite of the better draft then prevailing.

THIS paper deals primarily with an investigation of ball-mill liners that was conducted by the writer over a period of six years at the Mammoth mill in Arizona. The investigation covered a wide variety of designs of liners in both primary and secondary mills. The comparative results are presented herein as evidence of the extent to which design influenced liner life and mill performance. FLOWSHEET The feed to the Mammoth mill was a complex, oxidized, gold-silver-lead-molybdenum-vanadium ore with rhyolite, andesite and granite as gangue. Although the ore varied between stopes, the long-term average in character remained substantially the same. Capacity was 560 tons per day. [t] Fig. I shows an abbreviated flowsheet of the grinding section of the mill. PRIMARY BALL MILL A 3-ft. Symons shorthead crusher in open circuit crushed to ¼ -in. maximum one-way dimension the feed to the 5 by 10-ft. Marcy open-end ball mill. The mill rotated at 80 per cent of critical speed and was charged with 4-in. forged steel balls. Cast balls were used for a few months at a slight reduction in ball cost, but breakage of the large balls reduced the ball size and grinding capacity to a point where the over-all costs suffered out of proportion to the saving in cost of balls. For metallurgical reasons, the finished product of the mill was maintained at minus 8-mesh. This coarse product, plus the very abrasive ore and the absence of fines in the feed, caused abnormally rapid wear of the mill liners. The resultant high operating cost led to the most extensive phase of the investigation. [ ] In order to clarify the difference in design of the various types of liners used, Fig. 2 shows the profiles with the arrangement in which grinding balls of maximum size would lie on the face of the liners. The results with each type of shell liner in the primary mill are shown in Table I.

THE property of Eureka Corp. Ltd. is located in the approximate geographic center of Nevada, 2 miles from Eureka, the county seat. The great sources of power, the Colorado, Snake, and Salmon Rivers and the rivers of northern California, are 300 to 500 miles distant, and no lines serve areas closer than 150 miles. Fuel for diesel and steam generation is available in Utah, 300 to 400 miles to the east. Eureka's railhead is 80 miles north where two trunk lines cross the county. A spur line serves Ely, 77 miles east. Good highways connect Eureka to the railheads. Activity in the Eureka mining district began in the early 1870's. The oxidized high grade lead-sil-ver-gold ore terminated against the footwall of the Ruby Hill fault, and in 1890 the main operations ceased. In 1938 Eureka Corp. Ltd. discovered ore in the hanging wall of the fault by diamond drilling. The history of Eureka in the late 1800's indicates that there was some water at 600 to 800 ft in the old workings, probably accumulations above the water table which did not seriously interfere with mining operations. Both the Locan and Richmond shafts were sunk to a level below the table, but apparently the only serious difficulty with water occurred in the Locan. The steam pump used when the last work was done on the 1200 level in 1923, many years after exhaustion of the main orebodies, is still installed on the Locan 900 level. The capacity was about 500 gpm, lifting 750 ft to the 100 level, which connected with the surface. In addition to this. bailers were used to keep the 1200 level free of water. It is said that pumping in 1923 lowered the water in the Holly shaft, about a mile and a half away, but this seems doubtful. The pumping was of short duration because no ore was found. When work at the new Fad shaft was started in 1941 Eureka Corp. Ltd. engineers were fully aware of the probability of encountering water in large volume. Their primary exploration and development had to be carried on at the 2250 level. The first water was encountered at 300 ft. This was undoubtedly surface drainage in the bedding of the Pogonip limestone and was less than 100 gpm. The fractured, loose Hamburg dolomite at the water table was not well cemented, and relatively little water, 300 gpm, percolated through it with difficulty. At 1350 ft well-cemented dolomite containing some open fractures was encountered. These fractures produced the first water of consequence, 750 gpm. At 1700 ft the volume was 1000 gpm increasing to the maximum during shaft sinking, 1600 gpm, at the 2000 level. Secret Canyon shale, a dry formation, was entered at 2100 ft, where a concrete water ring was placed to catch all of the water. The volume decreased rapidly to a constant flow of 1200 gpm. Below 2100 ft the shaft and stations remained in the shale and water was not a problem. Several faults of moderate displacement, including the reverse Martin fault, had been intersected during the traversing of 1000 ft of wet Hamburg, but no undue quantities of water were encountered. Observations in the diamond drill holes in the ore zone area showed a rapid lowering of the water table. The shaft was flooded when it left the dry shale and entered the water-bearing Eldorado dolomite on the 2250 level, crossing a fissure which paralleled the Martin fault. High pressure water doubled the volume then being pumped. Pipe failure through a water door bulkhead was a contributing factor. Immediately following this flooding in March 1948 preparations were made to recover the shaft as rapidly as possible by increasing power and pump capacities as needed. Measurements before flooding indicated the water could be lowered at a fast rate. However, the water table did not recede as rapidly as expected and volumes required to lower the water in the shaft were higher. Obviously the size of the main water channel on the 2250 level was increasing because of erosion, allowing greater volumes to enter the workings and draining beyond the cone originally being drained during shaft sinking. Eroded material was being deposited in the shaft below the 2250 level in serious proportions. In December 1948 a second flooding of the Fad shaft was allowed for the purpose of reassessing existing conditions and studying alternate methods of attack. The detailed geology of the Eureka mining district, see Fig. 1, has been described during the past 75 years by many geologists.' Only the general features and those which seem to affect the drainage problem will be discussed. The old ore zone, mined between 1870 and 1890, is located in a wedge-shaped block of Eldorado dolomite between the footwall of the Ruby Hill fault and the underlying Prospect Mountain quartzite, see Fig. 2. Production of high grade oxidized lead ore containing high values in gold and silver has been variously estimated at $50 to $90 million. The tonnage mined was probably close to 1,500,000, nearly all of which was found above the water table. Background The annual awards, which have been given by the US National Committee for Rock Mechanics since its inception in 1969, recognize out- standing research in rock mechanics. Such recognition has always been accompanied by a plaque or certificate for the winners and a presentation at the symposium awards banquet. Starting this year, the US National Committee will give the winners even more recognition and allow the rock mechanics community to benefit from the papers by publishing abstracts of the work in the proceedings of the 25th US Symposium on Rock Mechanics and in various society journals and news letters. "We hope this will stimulate the production of more research papers," said William R. Judd, former chairman on the subpanel of awards. "It's beneficial for researchers to have their work published as an award paper." There are four categories of awards: Basic Research, Applied Research, Case History, and Student Masters' Thesis. Approximately ten papers are nominated annually for each category; however, in some years awards are not made in all four categories. For instance, there were not enough case history nominations in 1983 for an award, but there were two equally outstanding recipients of the award for applied research. The winners of the 1983 research awards reflect the wide variety of professions involved with rock mechanics. They are introduced on the following pages by category, and accompanied by an abstract of the paper

The year 1941 was uneventful in oil and gas development in Missouri. No new pools were opened and several areas with promising structures, in the northwestern part of the state, were disappointing when drilled. In looking for an explanation of these failures, it is suggested that it will be necessary to find areas in which the lower beds of the Mississippian are upfolded, in order to obtain production in northwestern Missouri. To do this, geophysical exploration or test drilling far enough into the Mississippian beds to get cores or cuttings of definitely established age appear to be the best methods. The total footage drilled by rotary rigs of various types was 31,135 ft. and that by cable tools, 29,166 feet. The total number of completions was 85, of which 18 were gas wells with an initial open-flow capacity of 12,528,000 cu. ft., and 67 were dry holes. Of the latter, 19 were drilled into Mississippian or older formations. Table I gives a summary of activities by counties.

The year 1941 was uneventful in oil and gas development in Missouri. No new pools were opened and several areas with promising structures, in the northwestern part of the state, were disappointing when drilled. In looking for an explanation of these failures, it is suggested that it will be necessary to find areas in which the lower beds of the Mississippian are upfolded, in order to obtain production in northwestern Missouri. To do this, geophysical exploration or test drilling far enough into the Mississippian beds to get cores or cuttings of definitely established age appear to be the best methods. A general treatment of the broadening of X-ray double-crystal spectrometer rocking curves due to distributions of tilts and strains has been carried out. The results of this treatment have been applied to the case where dislocations in a crystal give rise to both tilts and strains. On this basis it is found that the rocking-curve halfwidth due to imperfections in the crystal, ßC , increases with increasing Bragg angle, 8. These considerations predict linear relationships between & and tan2 , and ßCand tan 8, for Gaussian and Cauchy distributions of dislocations, respectively. The zero intercept of the ßC us 8 curve, which is a measure of the degree of imperfection of the crystal, is found to depend directly on the distribution rather than the number of dislocations. In addition, the slope-intercept ratio for the ßc - ? curve has been calculated for both the Gaussian and Cauchy distributions. Experimental determination of the - 8 curves for a series of copper single crystals prepared by the Bridgeman and Czochralski methods yields results in agreement with the calculated slope-intercept ratio for a Cauchy distribution of dislocations. CERTAIN X-ray techniques have been used to study the perfection of single crystals. Gay, Hirsch, and Kelly have considered the spreading of spots into arcs on Debye-Sherrer rings due to imperfections. The Double-Crystal Spectrometer has also been applied to this problem.2 The characteristics of Double-Crystal Spectrometer Rocking Curves have been described in the literature by various workers.2-4 By assuming a random spacing of dislocations which give rise to a Gaussian distribution of misorientations relative to some mean orientation in a crystal Gay, et al.,1 arrive at the conclu- sion that the most probable misorientation is given by where h is the spacing between dislocations, and 8 and are the relative misorientations of neighboring regions.
