(Visitor) Picklers and galvanizers in and around Johannesburg are encountering an ever-increasing problem in disposing of spent liquors from their hydrochloric acid pickling baths. Particularly troublesome is the zinc-contaminated liquor that is produced as a result of the clean-up of rejects from the galvanizing operation. Because of the volatility of zinc chloride. this liquor presents difficulties when processed in a conventional pyrohydrolysis acid-recovery unit. The paper describes the Metsep Process. developed by the National Institute for Metallurgy and Woodall-Duckham S.A. (Pty) Ltd. which involves the use of continuous ion exchange for the separation of the zinc from the pickle liquor. and the use of liquid-liquid extraction for the conversion of zinc chloride eluate to salable zinc sulphate. A description of laboratory and pilot-plant tests is given. and the approach used in the design of a full-scale continuous- ionexchange plant is outlined.

"A mathematical simulation model has been devised to guide the layout of surface or underground mine workings, drill stations, and drill holes that are established in order to search for tabular ore bodies. The ore bodies may be contained within veins, sedimentary beds (including reefs), or other tabular structures.Programmed for a time-shared digital computer, the model contains both stochastic and deterministic variables. Stochastic or natural variables include the number of ore shoots and their sizes, orientations, locations and values. Deterministic or controllable variables include (i) locations and costs of workings (for underground exploration); (ii) drill station locations and costs; and (iii) drill hole azimuths, inclinations, lengths and deflections (if any).For various assumptions about the natural variables, the model is run while the controllable variables arc changed deliberately. Thus, layouts are devised to determine the percentages of the total number of assumed ore shoots found at different costs. In order to choose among the various layouts, cost-effectiveness measures are calculated."

In most auriferous hydrothermal deposits, gold is preferentially associated with pyrite and arsenopyrite minerals, with higher economic gold values noted for the latter and arsenian pyrite minerals. In this paper, surface (Cryo-XPS) and solution (EDTA extraction) analysis were used to characterise pyrite and arsenopyrite minerals under different aqueous conditions involving electrokinetic study and collector interactions to better understand ways of improving the separation of pyrite and arsenopyrite. The evidence showed higher surface oxidation at solution pulp pH values in the range of 4-11 for arsenopyrite relative to pyrite. The observed highest ratio of pyrite to arsenopyrite selectivity was 1.7 at collector concentration of 50 g/t and decreased with an increase in collector concentration. This study explores the use of backfill in hard rock bord-and-pillar mines to increase the pillar strength and extraction ratio at depth. The use of backfill will also minimize the requirement for tailings storage on surface and the risk of environmental damage. A literature survey indicated that backfill is extensively used in coal mines, but rarely in hard rock bord-and-pillar mines. To simulate the effect of backfill confinement on pillar strength, an extension of the limit equilibrium model is proposed. Numerical modelling of an actual platinum mine layout is used to illustrate the beneficial effect of backfill on pillar stability at greater depths. The magnitude of confinement exerted by the backfill on the pillar sidewalls is unknown, however, and this needs to be quantified using experimental backfill mining sections equipped with suitable instrumentation.

Traditional fire assay dates back over 3000 years and has changed very little over that time. The only improvement is to replace the gravimetric finish with dissolution of the Precious Metal bead followed by AA or ICP analysis of the solution. The newly developed FIP A (Fast In-line Fire Assay) method allows full automation of the fire assay process from sample preparation to spark analysis of the Pb button. This results in fully quantitative analyses for Pt, Pd, Rh, Ru, lr, Au and Ag in typically less than an hour after a sample is entered into the system. Detection limits are theoretically Pt 0.08 ppm, Pd 0.002 ppm, Rh 0.002 ppm, Au 0.08 ppm and Ag 0.002 ppm but in practice the lower measurable limits are about double these figures. Few opportunities have been available to present data obtained using the FIFA system as all FIFA laboratories have been in the domain of a Pt mining company which prefers to keep all Pt analytical matters confidential. However, IMP has recently participated in the round robin exercise to establish recommended values for a new series of Merensky Reef and UO-2 Layer reference materials produced by African Mineral Standards. The precision of the results was excellent being on average Pt 2.05%, Pd 1.25%, Rh 4.08% and Ru 4.94% being expressed as Relative Standard Deviation. The excellent precision is a reflection of the efficient collection of POEs in the Pb buttons and the homogeneity of the Pb buttons. However, the accuracy was not as good. The poorer accuracy is interpreted as the calibration of the spectrometer not being as good as desired due to the difficulty in acquiring a suitable range of standards with reliable recommended values for the PGEs. The most recent spectrometer was calibrated with the greatest care and produced slightly better results for Pt, Pd and Rh and slightly worse for Ru.

Typical depressants for selective reverse flotation of iron oxides from complex silicates do not generally show high levels of efficiency. Therefore, as a hot topic, there are several ongoing investigations in this area. The main aim of this paper is exploring the potential of using humic acid (HA) as a depressant in reverse cationic flotation of hematite from complex silicates. For such a process, the wettability and flotation behaviour of pure minerals (hematite and silicates) was investigated at pH 10 in the presence of HA and cationic collector. Adsorption mechanism of HA on these minerals was measured by zeta-potential and FTIR. Results of flotation tests showed that at the lower concentrations of HA, selective separation of silicates from hematite is beneficial, where the floatability of amphibole was higher than pyroxene. A higher separation efficiency of hematite through reverse flotation was observed in the presence of amphibole, in comparison with the presence of pyroxene. Wettability studies showed that HA has a significant effect on reducing the hydrophobicity of treated minerals with the collector. The adsorption, ZPC and FTIR test results indicated that HA was adsorbed on both silicates and hematite. However, the absorption intensity onto hematite was much higher than silicates. It was found that the adsorption mechanism of HA on hematite takes place through both strong H-bonding and ligand exchange. "Currently, the matted-based collection process is most widely used for platinum group metal (PGM) recovery. However, because PGM-containing concentrates are becoming more enriched with UG2 (Upper Group 2) low-grade concentrates, this is expected to be integrated or replaced with an alloy collection process.The reduction LG (low-grade) concentrates with silicon carbide (SiC) was investigated. The purpose of the study was to ascertain the feasibility of using SiC as reductant with regard to metal fall, PGM grade in the alloy, slag composition, and overall PGM recovery, and if possible, the integration of such a process in the current matte-based collection process. Rowland and Easterns LG concentrate samples from Lonmin were analysed by Xray diffraction (XRD), X-ray fluorescence (XRF), and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). It was found that SiO2 and MgO are the most abundant oxides and Pd is the most abundant of the PGMs. Sulphide-bearing minerals such as chalcopyrite were detected in low concentrations (below 1%), and Cr2O3 concentrations are between 2-4%. SiC reduction of Rowland and Easterns concentrate were conducted at 1600°C with reductant to concentrate ratios ranging from 2.5 to 3.5 kg SiC per 100 kg concentrate.The reduction experiments revealed that PGM recoveries from Rowland concentrate were poor. SEM images showed entrained metal prills in the slag phase. The slag viscosity at the end of the melt was calculated by using FactSage, and the results indicated that the viscosity was higher than 4 poise, which is above that of Easterns slag. PGM recoveries for Easterns concentrate were significantly better. More than 85% of the Ir and Pd and almost 60% of the Pt were recovered in a test with a reductant to concentrate ratio of 3.5 kg SiC per 100 kg Easterns concentrate. At this reductant to concentrate ratio, Fe recovery was also the highest, at 66%. SEM imaging of a slag sample revealed few or no metal prills entrained. The FeO content in the initial concentrate charge was then increased by adding Peirce-Smith converter slag in order to decrease the slag viscosity and further increase PGM recovery. A test was conducted with the addition of 10 kg converter slag per 100 kg Easterns concentrate. The reductant to concentrate ratio was kept at 3.5 kg SiC per 100 kg Easterns concentrate. The Ir and Pd recoveries were more than 95%, while Pt recovery was almost 70%. Fe recovery increased to 76%. On the basis of these results an optimum feed ratio between Easterns and Rowland concentrates and Peirce-Smith converter slag were calculated. FactSage predicted that the concentrate charge should consist of 70-80% Easterns concentrate with 20-30 kg converter slag per 100 kg LG concentrate. SiC reduction of this optimum LG concentrate charge is expected to recover more than 90% of all PGMs. Cr and Si concentrations in the alloy will be below 1% in total.The effectiveness of SiC as reductant was also compared to carbon reduction. Carbon reduction of an optimum concentrate charge at the same reductant to concentrate ratio resulted in a marginally higher metal fall than SiC reduction. However, gas emissions and energy requirements are higher for carbon reduction.The study has shown that base metals and PGMs can be recovered in an iron alloy by SiC reduction of LG concentrate with converter slag additions. Integration of such a process into the matte-based collection process could be considered as a future alternative for smelting UG2 LG concentrates."

With the removal of the majority of the shallow mineral reserves there has been an increase in the mining depths in the South African mining industry. This has, in turn, changed the industry?s and stakeholders? perceptions of risk associated with mining-induced instability. In recent years the increased mining depth, particularly in open pits, has led to an increase in pit slope failures, which has highlighted the need for appropriate and effective pit slope management programmes. Such a programme comprises many facets, including mine hazard plans, regular slope inspections, cleaning of interim and final pit faces, blasting practices, histories of failures, pit depressurization, stormwater control and evacuation procedures. However, it is arguably in the field of slope monitoring that the most significant strides have been made in terms of new technologies and best practice in open pit mining geotechnics, with the introduction of technologies such as laser scanners and slope stability radar. This paper seeks to illustrate the operational benefits associated with the implementation of new technologies into open pit mining, using AngloGold Ashanti?s Geita Gold Mine in Tanzania as an example.

Open-pit mine planning includes the determination of a long-term open-pit mine production scheduling (OMPS) plan. The OMPS plan is generally a three-dimensional (3D) block extraction sequence that seeks to maximise the net present value (NPV) of future cash flows, while complying with technical and operational constraints. The OMPS problem is computationally complex because it involves the analysis of large datasets, while simultaneously incorporating both multiple hard and soft constraints. The OMPS problem has been solved using deterministic or exact approaches, heuristic, and metaheuristic models. When compared to heuristic and metaheuristic models, deterministic approaches tend to take much longer to solve the OMPS problem when the number of constraints increases. Therefore, this paper presents a metaheuristic model which utilises a genetic algorithm (GA) framework to solve the OMPS problem. The GA-based model was applied to the Newman1 and Zuck Small mining instances, which are publicly available from the online MineLib database. The NPVs for the OMPS plan generated using the GA-based model for the two case studies were compared to the best-known published MineLib solutions obtained using the TopoSort heuristic model at the time of this study. For the Newman1 instance the equivalent annual NPVs were approximately US$6.6 million for the GA-based solution and US$5.1 million for the TopoSort solution. For the Zuck Small mining instance, the equivalent annual NPVs were approximately US$99.8 million for the GA-based solution and US$102.5 mil for the TopoSort solution. These results show that the GA-based model produced comparable solutions to some of the best-known solutions, thus, indicating strong potential application of GA-based models to solve OMPS problems.

In order to add value to South Africa?s gold reserves AuTEK, a joint venture between Mintek and Anglogold-Ashanti, was started in 2000 with the aim of developing new industrial uses for gold. Accordingly gold catalysts are being made in kilogram quantities by Project AuTEK and sold toend users and other interested parties under the trade name AUROliteTM. Although these materials are optimized for use in CO oxidation applications, demonstration of appropriate activity, selectivity and durability in both liquid- and other gas-phase reactions has been shown1. The review below highlights the recent use of these materials, and other gold catalysts, in reactions of commercial interest.

INTRODUCTION To prepare the reader adequately, reference should be made to the paper 'The Pioneering of Fully Mechanized Longwall Coal Mining in South Africa' by R. T. Naude and M. J. Deats, published in the February, 1967, edition of the Journal. At the time mechanized longwalling had been proved operationally feasible with encouraging results since its inception in South Africa in mid 1965. Subsequently, further top seam panels were successfully extracted with improved productivity and with some modification to equipment. In 1968, after an overseas visit by mine officials, equipment specific to suit local conditions was acquired and lower seam trials commenced. Despite initial obstacles and difficulties the first panel was successfully mined. Modification and improvements to equipment and techniques resulted in the second lower seam panel being extracted economically during 1969-1970 and with productivity exceeding even that of top seam faces. During extraction of the second lower seam panel, gradual and complete surface subsidence occurred over the panel without affecting face operations. Rock mechanics investigations had originally indicated some uncertainty regarding adverse dolerite sill behaviour which could have caused longwall mining to be hazardous. All such doubts have now been removed. RESUMÉ AS AT FEBRUARY, 1967 Mechanized longwalling was introduced in 1965 on an experimental basis in an effort to improve productivity in the newer area of the mine and to increase the quality of the comparatively dirty run of mine feed to the washing plant. In addition advantages could be predicted in the long term by better utilizing reserves of straight coking coal and increasing the life of the mine. The top seam unit was obtained on a rental basis and by the beginning of 1967, two panels, the first having a face length of 215 m, a panel length of 345 m, seam section of 1 219 mm, and the second the same face length, a panel length of 453 m and a seam section of 1 067 mm had been successfully longwalled. At this stage a best month of 24 602 metric tons with an average of 17 364 metric tons per full working month could be reported. Results were sufficiently encouraging for the company to exercise its right to acquire the equipment as its own asset and from 1967 onward, the unit has operated on this basis. From the point of view of rock mechanics, the dolerite sill over the first two panels was known to have 'bridged', only the material below the base of the sill having truly 'goafed'. No adverse pressure effects had significantly affected face operations except for two 'bumps' towards the end of operations in each panel. Gate road maintenance presented no problem. The strong inflows of water experienced on the first face were now known to be associated with an isolated water bearing fault plane and were not experienced on the second face. TOP SEAM EXPERIENCE - MAY, 1966, TO DATE Panel 2 (February, 1966, to November, 1966) The operations in panel 2 (see Fig. 1 for location of panels) continued uneventfully until the final month in this panel. At this stage, the chocks behaved most inconsistently often lowering under the weight of the canopies alone. Roof trouble became so severe that the unit was unable to produce adequately and blasting of chocks became a daily occurrence. Finally 24 m short of the planned limit it was decided that a complete overhaul was the only solution and the extraction operations commenced. At this time, the only fatal accident associated with longwalling occurred when a Non-White inadvertently fell into the panzer conveyor transfer point at the main gate. Some gate road difficulties in this panel were overcome by bolting tapes to the roof as decking and allowing them to pass over the gate chocks and collapse into the goaf. Two cribbed roof falls were also negotiated by the gate chocks at the face ends without undue difficulties. It was decided in the light of maintenance problems encountered on this face that the best solution would be to appoint a foreman solely in charge of face maintenance crews. This step has to a large extent contributed to success achieved subsequently. Panel 2-face length 213 m panel length 456 m cutting height 1 092 mm average monthly output 16 443 t best month 19 130 t Panel 3 (December, 1966, to June, 1967) By the end of 1966 results were sufficiently encouraging for the company to exercise its right to acquire the equipment. This was negotiated and the unit has operated as such to the present date. Prior to installation in panel 3, all face equipment was thoroughly overhauled underground and the chocks boost-tested to yield-load. The costs of overhauling, including almost complete hose replacement, were much higher than anticipated. Advice had been received that complete hose replacement was common practice after +/- 18 months' operation. Shortly after commencement of operations in panel 3 the chocks again failed as they had towards the end of panel 2. At this stage, the suppliers advised that the valve gear should have been repaired during the overhaul as the needle and seat seals could no longer be relied upon. This operation was impossible to carry out on the face and would have been e1ttremely time consuming. Fortunately a new type of valve gear was then available from the suppliers, termed the capsule-type valve, and a complete change over could be made on the face. This study deals with the development of some new theory concerning the bias which will result from the employment of the t-estimator if in fact the underlying distribution of ore values is not lognormal. It is found that the t-estimator is robust as long as the logarithmic variance is small and the shape factors of the transformed distribution are not unduly large. The choice of the threshold parameter [t] for the t-estimator is important, and some hints are given how to estimate it if the sample size is small, as en- countered in borehole valuation problems.

Deciding on plant-scale reagent dosage regimes and air rates is a topic of ongoing investigation and high importance. The current work explains some techniques that have proven useful in deciding on plant-scale flotation operating regimes. Specific focus has been placed on the reagents: frother and depressant, as well as some discussion around the control of air rate and froth depth. Air rate has been selected based on its effects on the froth phase. Froth velocity and froth height above the cell lip are the two variables measured and used to select the operating air rate. Pulp level is then adjusted to increase or decrease mass pull. A technique has been developed using the Anglo Platinum Bubble Sizer on an industrial flotation cell to determine the relationship between bubble size and frother concentration. This technique has been extended to measure the equivalent frother concentration or frothabilities of various streams on a rougher bank. A mass balance for frother was performed successfully, and this provided a better understanding of the way frother moved in the rougher bank. With this knowledge, more informed decisions can be made about frother addition required in subsequent flotation stages. For depressant, a new protocol for deciding on dosage rate has been developed. The depressant dosage should be based on the amount of fresh feed material reporting to a bank. Currently 400 g/t of fresh feed has been assumed a reasonable starting point with promising results. Improved froth stability and grades were observed. There is scope for more accurately defining the optimal dosage rate. Importantly, the combined effect of changing the chemistry and the hydrodynamics together has been demonstrated. A significant upward shift in the grade-recovery relationship for a cleaner bank was observed.

"Since it was first identified in 1817, selenium has received considerable interest. Native selenium and a few selenium minerals were discovered several decades later. With the increasing number of selenium minerals, the occurrence of selenium minerals became the focus of much research. A great number of selenium deposits were reported all over the world, although few independent selenium deposits were discovered. Selenium is obtained mainly as a byproduct of other metals, and is produced primarily from the anode mud of copper refineries. This paper presents a comprehensive review of selenium minerals, as well as the treatment of copper refinery anode slimes for the recovery of selenium. Our focus is on the selenium minerals, including their discovery and occurrence, and the distribution of selenium resources. In addition, the main methods of recovering selenium from copper anode slimes are summarized. IntroductionSelenium (Se) was first observed in 1817 in a laboratory (Greenwood et al., 1984). The discovery of selenium was made by the Swedish chemist J.J. Berzelius and J.G. Gahn, who isolated selenium from a red residue in sulphuric acid from pyrite mined at Fahlun, Sweden. Selenium was named from the Greek word selene (moon), since it resembled tellurium, which had been discovered a few years earlier and named from the Latin word tellus (Earth).After the first observation of selenium in the laboratory, selenium received considerable interest. In 1954, E.P. Kaiser pointed out that Se is enriched in sulphide ores and often associated with Bi, Co, Sn etc. (Kaiser 1954). In 1959, Hawley and Nichol investigated selenium in Canadian sulphide minerals, and presented the content of selenium in sulphide from several deposits of different types. They also proposed that Se is enriched in lowtemperature hydrothermal pyrite (Hawley and Nichol, 1959). The thermodynamic conditions for forming native selenium and selenium minerals in sedimentary rocks were discussed, as well as geochemical behaviour of selenium near the oxidation zones of sulphides in the 1970s (Howard III, 1977; Zhu et al., 2003). Zhu et al. examined the morphology, features, and genesis of native selenium from Yutangba, Enshi City, Hubei Province, China in 2004, and pointed out, from the different forms of native Se, that selenium can be activated,transformed, remobilized, and enriched at sites such as in the unsaturated subsurface zone or in the saturated zone (Zhu et al., 2005). The transport and deposition of selenium in felsic volcanic-hosted massive sulphide deposits of the Yukon Territory, Canada was studied and reported by Layton- Matthews et al. (2005)."

One of the main tasks in exploitation of mines is to select a method suitable for the deposits, specific features including geometric, geo-mechanical and geological features. The purpose of selecting a mining method at this stage is to choose one or more method(s) having the most coordination with the deposit?s conditions and external factors, including the allocated budget and local technology for detailed feasibility studies. Several methods have been developed in the past to evaluate suitable mining methods for an ore deposit, based on its physical characteristics. These approaches can be classified into three groups: (1) profile and checklist methods, (2) numerical ranking (scoring) methods, and (3) decision-making models. Most of these methods have shortcomings. Considering the fact that most of the specifications of mineral deposits, such as dip and depth, are linguistic variables, absoluteness of the explaining parameters by previous methods can be mentioned as the most important disadvantage of these methods. This paper discusses the Fuzzy technique for order performance by similarity to ideal solution (Fuzzy TOPSIS) to determine the mining method. The fuzzy decision making (FDM) software tool is employed to develop a Fuzzy TOPSIS based model. Application of this model with various values (crisp, linguistic and fuzzy) of the deposit eliminated the existing disadvantages of other methods. Two empirical illustrations demonstrate the effectiveness and feasibility of the evaluation procedure. These show that the proposed model performs better than its alternatives. One of the consequences of large-scale opencast mining for coal is the disposal of an enormous volume of overburden material that needs to be removed. With the enlargement of opencast mines and associated high stripping ratios, the volume of overburden extraction is rising. Overburden from the initial mine cut has to be necessarily dumped outside the mining area until enough void is created inside the mine for back-filling operations. The quantity of overburden placed outside the mining area normally varies from 10% to 30% of the total overburden removal. The stability of these dumps placed outside the mining area is of prime importance from the point of view of smooth operations of the mines and safety of persons in and around the dumping area. Owing to increasing pressure on land use, mine operators do not have any other option other than to place the waste dumps very near to the surface edge of the pit, which may lead to failure of the topsoil benches of the working pit. This study identified major controlling parameters that influence a stable but economic combination of height and slope angle of external dumps located close to the edge of an open coal pit.

Because of its superior properties, stainless steel has been widely used for many applications. Nonmetallic inclusions can influence the quality of stainless steel products. A set of samples was used to track the response of inclusion composition during processing of a heat of titanium-bearing 18% chromium steel, from deoxidation after decarburization, to the solidified slab. The oxide inclusions responded as expected to additions of deoxidizers and calcium treatment, changing from silica to alumina and spinels, and then to calcium aluminates. The samples confirmed that titanium nitride can nucleate on liquid calcium aluminate during steel solidification.

Waste printed circuit boards (WPCBs) are excellent metal resources. Mineralogical characteristics of different components in WPCBs were analysed in this study. Organic-enriched particles, fibreglass-enriched particles, associated particles and metal-enriched particles were obtained by density gradient method. Subsequently, the elemental composition, morphology, dissociation characteristics, functional group composition and phase composition of different components were analysed by X-ray fluorescence spectrometer (XRF), scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive spectrometer (SEM+EDS), infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). Elemental analysis results show that Cu is mainly contained in metal-enriched particles. SEM+EDS analysis results demonstrate that ideal dissociation can be achieved when the WPCBs are broken to -1 mm. Organic matter particles are enriched with carbon and oxygen elements, while fibreglass particles and associated particles mainly contain Al and Si elements, verified by XRD analysis. FT-IR results show that hydrophilic and hydrophobic groups exist widely in all components, caused by widespread organic matter. This study reveals the important properties of different components in WPCBs, which is of great significance for the subsequent separation process.
