Although the physical characteristics of ANFO made from porous prilled ammonium nitrate (PPAN) have been altered by the addition of crystal modifiers, the optimisation of prilling processes and the admixture of waterproofing agents, the sensitivity of this explosive has not been modified on a commercial scale in the 40 years since its accidental discovery.

The Kaiser Aluminum and Chemical Corp. announced plans to raise June ingot prices by 4 cents to 57 cents per pound. Producers? April value for 99.5 percent unalloyed aluminum ingot was at 53 cents per pound. Domestic merchants last month were quoting the metal at 48-49 cents per pound. Primary aluminum producers began restarting production facilities following the settlement of the coal strike. Noranda Aluminum Inc. recalled workers to prepare potlines for production at its plant at New Madrid, Mo., which had closed February 14, 1978 due to the shortage of coal. Eastalco Aluminum Co. resumed full capacity production at its Frederick, Md. smelter where production had been cut by 30 percent. Anaconda Aluminum Co. resumed full capacity production at its Sebree, Ky. smelter.

"INTRODUCTION Reinforced Concrete (RC) members such as beams and columns are usually required to include stirrups to maintain post-crack shear capacity, and some may include stirrups that act as confining steel to maintain structural integrity during a seismic event (eg. NZS3101, ACI 318). To achieve seismic resistance, the spacing between stirrups is usually required to be much closer than is ordinarily prescribed for non-seismically resistant structures. Each stirrup must also fully enclose the longitudinal reinforcement with long end-hooks to ensure that the contained concrete is sufficiently restrained during reverse-cycle loading and the reinforcing bars are confined to prevent buckling. The close spacing between stirrups can lead to congestion of reinforcement within members, and can also be expensive to construct due to the labor-intensive nature of steel fixing. A possible alternative to closely-spaced stirrups is the use of fibers to provide restraint and confinement during a seismic event, although this is not yet recognized in codes. Previous experimental research (Jiuru et al, 1992; Filiatrault et al, 1995; Bayasi and Gebman, 2002; Billington and Yoon, 2004) has demonstrated that steel fibers are relatively effective in this application, but suffer the problem that their stiffness can make them difficult to consolidate within an already tight reinforcement cage, especially if they are relatively long (>40 mm). Moreover, steel fiber reinforced concrete (SFRC) is subject to embrittlement with the passage of time, leading to a steady loss of ductility beyond crack widths of 1-2 mm (Banthia and Trottier, 1994; Bernard and Hanke, 2002; Bernard, 2014; Bjontegaard et al, 2014; Bernard, 2015). Since cracks during seismic events are generally much larger than this, embrittlement may present a challenge to the long-term efficacy of SFRC during seismic events. An alternative to steel fibers for enhancement of seismic resistance is the use of macro-synthetic fibers. This type of fiber usually offers the advantage of being flexible so that consolidation is easier between reinforcing bars. They also offer superior durability compared to steel fibers and can reduce flexural crack widths (Bernard, 2016). Several recent small-scale investigations (Ma et al, 2012; Carnovale, 2012; Osorio et al, 2014) have indicated that macro-synthetic fibers can produce meaningful improvements in seismic resistance if used in combination with conventional steel reinforcing bars. The present investigation has extended research in this field by examining whether embossed macro-synthetic fibers can be used to increase the spacing between stirrups while maintaining seismic resistance."

More gold is being produced now than ever before in recorded history. All over the world huge quantities of ore are being mined and processed, thanks to historically high prices for gold and the use of processing techniques demonstrated as cost efficient in the last 20 years. Over the past 10-15 years prices for many other metals have been depressed, and gold has accounted for a significant proportion of worldwide exploration and development expenditures(l)1. The revenues generated from gold mining are providing greater return on investment, more jobs, and more tax revenues to national governments than ever before. Emerging nations are using the gold industry as a springboard for development; developed nations are continuing to fuel their economies with gold industry revenues; and China and countries of the former Soviet Union are using the gold industry to generate foreign exchange, modernize their mining industries, and take the first tentative steps toward private sector participation in their economies.

"Due to the increase of automotive vehicles, available parking spaces become a new type of limited resource in central cities of China, especially in those old districts without visionary urban planning. Additional mechanical parking in underground space is an efficient solution to provide parking spaces under the situation where the urban space is constrained. Shichahai district is an old protected zone in Beijing which is close to the Forbidden City and there are many Hutong (alleyway) and Quadrangles (courtyard house). No spaces are available for car parking on the ground and all vehicles are parking in Hutong without order currently. The local government plan to do renovation work for this district and improve the residential environment. Several innovative solutions are studied including parking in deep shafts, parking under existing buildings by under-pinned method, parking under buildings by covered excavation method, parking under roads built together with utility tunnel etc. 5000 difference types underground parking spaces are planned to be constructed in the following three years. Project examples are also introduced in this paper. INTRODUCTIONCar parking resources are very limited in central cities, especially in old districts without planning for increasing automotive vehicle volume. Traffic get worse when cars park on the side of the roads or move slowly to find parking spaces. Investigation shows the normal (parking space/ automotive vehicle volume) ratio is about 1.2 in most big cities such as New York, Tokyo and Hong Kong, while this ratio is only 0.5 in Beijing. One solution is to move cars out of central cities. But there are still huge parking requirements for the citizens living in central cities. Shichahai district is an historic protected zone in Beijing which is close to the Forbidden City and there are many Hutong and Quadrangles (refer to Figure 1 for project location). No spaces are available for car parking on ground and all vehicles are parked in Hutong without order currently. The local government had a plan to do renovation work of this district and improve the residence environment. 5000 different types of underground parking spaces are planned to be constructed in the following three years. One project designed and to be constructed by Zhongyan Technology will be introduced in this paper. Other innovative solutions will be introduced briefly as well."

The thermodynamic activity of MnO was measured in MnO-CaO-MgO-SiO2 slags that are typically encountered in the production of manganese-containing stainless steels. A gas equilibration-quenching technique was employed in measuring the activities. Activities of Mn in Pt-Mn alloys were redetermined at 1600ºC, which reconfirmed earlier results of strong negative deviations. MnO activities were then measured by equilibrating slags of various compositions based on a statistical experimental design procedure with Pt-Mn alloys under controlled partial pressure of oxygen in MnO saturated platinum crucibles at 1600ºC. Activities of MnO were found to increase with increasing concentration of MnO, basicity and CaO to MgO ratio. Most coal deposits in Western Canada involve steeply dipping multiple seams. An efficient way to recover coal seams would be to drill through the seams and blast both the overlying and underlying waste material in one shot without disrupting the coal seams while fragmenting the waste rock for easy removal. This requires special blasting techniques as reported by Chung and Jorgenson in 1985.

Abstract Hydraulic fracturing is a technology that has been utilized for more than 50 years in the oil industry. It was originally used for stimulating hard, brittle formations which typically exhibit low permeabilities and roughly linear elastic behavior. Nonetheless, an increasingly important segment of the industry is currently stimulating very soft and poorly consolidated formations; where the assumptions of ideal elasticity and relatively small fluid leakoff fail to hold (e.g. Gulf of Mexico, West Africa, Alaska, East China). In these rocks, hydraulic fracturing stimulation has been used for several years to control and solve critical production problems such as sanding and formation damage (caused during completion and drilling operations). Although successful1, the application of this method has not been accompanied by robust fracturing modeling techniques. In addition, long term production increases were often not materialized. In other words, engineers have been able, via trial-and-error, to avoid major ‘operational’ problems but with no optimization of such treatments. Thus, most hydraulic fracturing projects carried out in poorly consolidated rocks render unexpected results. A recent worldwide survey on net pressures by the Delft Fracturing Consortium (Papanastasiou, 1997) indicated that net pressures encountered in the field are 50% to 100% higher than the net pressures predicted by conventional fracturing simulators. The difference is yet higher for the case of poorly consolidated formations (Pak, 1997). The theory for the construction of a fully coupled elastoplastic three-dimensional hydrofrac simulator, specifically conceived for unconsolidated rocks, is presented in this paper. This novel model calculates the dimensions and changes in shape of the fracture(s) being created during hydraulic fracturing operations. No assumptions are made regarding either shape or geometry of the crack(s). Three main failure criteria are used simultaneously in this model: tensile and shear stresses, and volumetric strain. Incremental forms of the governing equations of equilibrium and fluid flow are presented. The scheme chosen for solving this problem is the finite elements method, which allows both equations to be solved simultaneously at any instant in time. Résumé La fracturation hydraulique est une technologie qu’a été utilisé pour plus que 50 ans dans l'industrie pétrolière. Elle a été utilisée au début pour stimuler les formations dure et fragile que typiquement ont des perméabilités basses et un comportement élastique à peu près linéaire. Néanmoins, un segment plus important de l'industrie stimule actuellement des formations mal consolidées; où les suppositions d'élasticité idéale et de relativement petite fuite de fluide ne se tiennent pas raison (par exemple le Golfe de Mexique, l'Afrique d'ouest, Alaska, la Chine de l'est). Dans ces roches, la stimulation avec fracturation hydraulique a été utilisée pour plusieurs années pour contrôler et résoudre les problèmes critiques de production comme les dommages de formation et d’ensablement (causé pendant les opérations de l'accomplissement et forage). Bien que prospère, l'application de cette méthode n'a pas été accompagnée de techniques robustes pour le modelage de fractures. En outre, les augmentations à long terme de production n'ont pas été souvent concrétisées. En d'autre termes, les ingénieurs ont pu, via le procès et l’erreur, éviter les majeur problèmes ‘opérationnel’ mais avec aucune optimisation de tels traitements. Ainsi, la plupart des projets de fracturation hydraulique ont été exécuté dans des roches mal consolidées et ont rendu résultat totalement inattendu. On July 24, 2002, a nonfatal entrapment accident occurred at the Quecreek #1 Mine, Black Wolf Coal Company, when an active mining section inadvertently cut into a flooded abandoned mine. This incident, and the dramatic rescue which ensued, brought national attention to a common problem in the coal mining industry. Since 1995, there have been more than 100 inundations at coal mines in the United States. Unavailable, inaccurate, or incomplete mapping of older abandoned mines is typically responsible. Serious problems associated with accidental discharges of fluid mine waste material (slurry) and water from coal refuse disposal facilities have resulted from similar causes. Recent problems related to the inaccurate location of old abandoned mine works have increased the interest in the use of conventional and emerging drilling and geophysical techniques for detection of air-filled and water-filled cavities. The United States Congress has committed significant funding toward investigating the applicability of these technologies. MSHA actively promotes the use of the best available technology to minimize the significant adverse safety and environmental consequences associated with unplanned breakthroughs and inundations. This paper provides background information and a general summary of the MSHA-sponsored field demonstration projects which are currently in progress. Potential benefits and limitations are discussed. The need for field verification/ground-truthing is emphasized. Under appropriate conditions, geophysical methods can be effectively integrated into a comprehensive field exploration program.

A general description of the activities and results of bauxite investigation by the Bureau of Mines at its bauxite project in Saline and Pulaski Counties, Ark., has been given in Report of Investigations No. 4251. The factual data obtained during the project are reported in a series of Reports of Investigation beginning with No. 4251, of which this is the seventeenth. The data are accompanied by maps showing the location of holes drilled and the deposits developed. Each area upon which work was done is reported by half townships. Each bauxite deposit investigated was assigned a name and a number for ready reference and identification, and its location and name are shown on the appropriate half-township map. The description of each half township is followed by a description of each deposit developed in that half township. The 14 half-township maps and 77 detail maps of the bauxite deposits in this series of reports give the locations and numbers of all the holes drilled on the project, except the deep holes drilled to test the geophysical anomalies. The locations of those holes show on figure 13 in volume 1. The descriptions of the deposits developed are followed by complete detailed logs of the drill holes.

U.S. feldspar output sold or used in 2005 was an estimated 760 kt (838,000 st), valued at $44 million free-on-board plant. This was below the 2004 volume and was the second year of decline in a row. Output included flotation concentrates, feldspar content in feldspar-silica mixtures, potash feldspar and aplite. The strong housing market in the United States maintained demand for ceramic tiles, plumbing fixtures and fiberglass insulation requiring feldspar. Shipments of glass containers were about the same as in 2004. Imports of ceramic tiles and plumbing fixtures continued to increase, taking the place of U.S.-produced goods and the feldspar required to make them. For 2005, 80 percent of the ceramic tiles sold and 50 percent of the plumbing fixtures sold in the United States were imported. Since 2000, manufacturing plant closures in the plumbing fixtures industry have reduced the demand for feldspar and feldspar-silica mixtures by 100 kt (110,000 st). Increased demand from the ceramic tile industry has partially offset the lost volume.

Frothers may be classified as weak or strong depending on their ability to produce stable froths, which is related to the amount of water that they transfer from the pulp to the froth. They can also have an effect on the non-selective mechanism of recovery by entrainment, implying that both selectivity and froth stability are, at least to some extent, frother dependent. Solids, on the other hand, also have an effect on froth behaviour. Clays, which are characterized by their small particle size, laminar shape, and high specific surface, tend to report to the froth phase and have an enormous impact on both froth stability and the overall performance of the flotation process. The purpose of this work is to shed light on the effect that different frothers have on the froth behaviour when clays are present. In order to do that, two sets of experiments were conducted using frothers from the families of alcohols and polyglycols. For each test, the equilibrium froth height was measured at different frother concentrations in an agitated machine with an acrylic square-base cell that was 11 cm wide and 25 cm high. The cell was designed in such a way that froth was able to grow without concentrate discharge. In the first set of tests, pure clays such as kaolinite and montmorillonite were used. In the second set, an actual copper sulphide ore with a high content of clays was used as solid phase. The results, expressed as curves of equilibrium froth height against frother dosage, showed a coupled effect of frother-clay on froth behaviour for both sets of experiments. In some cases, the froth grew up until the border of the cell with only a few parts per million of frother. In other cases, the equilibrium froth height varied smoothly with frother dosage. The results suggest that choosing the right frother can be of use for controlling the froth behaviour when dealing with clay-rich froths, using frother dosage as the control variable. The application of these findings at industrial scale are discussed and some recommendations are given.

Management of information systems for data collection is essential to maintain data integrity and continuity, and manage loss control on a large world-class mine such as Telfer Gold Mine. This paper aims to describe the individual systems and protocols of geological data capture at Telfer, then focus on Quality Assurance Quality Control data as an example of loss control in practice. Loss control systems are required to provide capacity, flexibility, structure and management tools to enhance data interrogation. The data that have been collected can then provide geological, financial, environmental, and contractual information to optimise management of business best practice. Telfer Gold Mine is a wholly owned and operated subsidiary of Newcrest Mining Limited. The mine is located in a remote area of NW Western Australia, and has been operating for 20 years. Geological data have been collected at Telfer since 1973. The data include drilling, assay, geological, survey, structural and geophysical data. Data management has evolved through many systems with data stored on many different hardware and software platforms. Commencing in 1995, collation, standardisation and validation of the historic data was completed. This has resulted in the first Access based drill hole database incorporating all available drilling data. This drill hole database, now hosted in SQL Server, is the hub for all geology related data management systems. The Telfer Gold Mine Geology Department has developed a series of inter-related database systems in order to manage the core geology business issues. Databases relating to drill hole planning, drill contract management, geological logging, accounting (standard costing, forecasting, invoice reconciliation), quality control (QAQC), and environment rehabilitation have all been developed to manage loss control. Management effort to provide adequate data systems and protocols has driven the system from concept to utilisation. The improved productivity, data integrity and data analysis capabilities provided by the new database systems at Telfer have allowed for greater confidence in decision making. Systems such as the drill hole and QAQC databases, when utilised in the proper manner provide up-to-date data analysis for resource audits and contract negotiations. The loss control systems are essential to maintain confidence in data integrity and hence directly effect the future of mining at Telfer.

Thermal stress relief by means of a typical heat treatment cycle (660oC for one hr) is compared with the one achieved through vibratory stress relief at resonant and multiple resonant frequencies for the D-406 HSLA material. Our analysis of the data is based on the microhardness profiles measured for the entire length of scales, namely, base metal, heat affected zone (HAZ) and the weld bead itself. The profiles obtained using the two techniques mimic each other, for an equivalent 70% stress relief level. The data are further qualified by impact testing wherein the zone of interest is projected in the retention groove to provide impact by the pendulum striker in the Charpy mode. Higher equivalent energy absorption in the treated specimens confirms the efficacy of the vibratory method. The present work rectifies earlier anomaly where heat treatment has been reported at 310oC for the same material.

"The Carboniferous coal measures, mined across Europe including the major European underground coal mining countries of Poland, UK, Germany, and Czech Republic, suffer from increasing extraction depth. This results in major geomechanics problems associated with ground control and support design.With production being concentrated into ever fewer high performance longwalls, located at greater and greater depth, pressure to ensure the roadways’ functionality (required dimensions) continues to increase. Mining in deeper and more highly stressed mining environments creates several problems. The high stress and deterioration in geological and mining conditions in many cases causes problems with gateroads maintenance (due to excess convergence). That leads to costly production gaps, longwall slowing, transport problems, an increase in the methane hazard and in the general health and safety of the workforce, and deterioration in climatic conditions with major economic risk associated with interruption of the revenue stream. Time—and thus production—delays due to maintenance often result from insufficient geological and geotechnical data acquisition and misinterpretation combined with inadequate support for the type of rock mass.longwall face on the gateroad stability (described by the gateroad convergence, support load, and shape and height of the fractured zone around the longwall gateroad) are presented. The investigations were carried out in the longwall panel with roof caving located at the great depth, in conditions of the Upper Silesian Coal Basin in Poland.The measurement results showed that the gateroad fractures in roof strata began to occur at the distance of about 1000 m ahead of the face. Additionally, the load on support and gateroad convergence increased as the longwall face got closer.It is very important for coal mining research institutes and mine operators to investigate and develop practical solutions and apply innovative support technologies at a great depth (particularly for reinforcement and stabilization of roadways and other openings).Underground measurements of stability conditions around the gateroad is of great importance to mining practice, especially in planning and designing supports for longwall gateroads.The influence of the front abutment pressure results in an increase of support load, gateroad convergence, and shape of fractured rock zone."

For many years the concept of life cycle costing (LCC) was promoted for decision making in corrosion protection systems. Nevertheless, the application of LCC was limited. Input data was often sourced from suppliers and met with scepticism. As a result final analysis was often insufficiently rigorous to meet the needs of Project Managers in sound decision making. The need for expediency often resulted in non-optimal corrosion protection system specifications. With improved communications and the global reach of industries, case history data, based upon actual performance has been able to provide input to substantiate decision making. However, today?s focus upon sustainability whereby environmental, economic and even social aspects enter into decision making has extended LCC into Life Cost Analysis (LCA). In an LCA analysis energy and environmental inputs into systems are compared as part of an overall assessment. The development of Agenda 21 at the Rio summit of 1992 has challenged the countries of the world to look at sustainable development in every economic activity. This ranges from construction to mining to electricity production to automotive production, use and disposal. The protection of buildings, infrastructure and transport systems is part of the needs of sustainable development. Zinc based corrosion protection has been an important part of the arsenal of the corrosion protection industry. This paper will highlight the use of LCC and the development of LCA with reference to the use of zinc based protection systems in a number of important industries.

This work was done to develop methods for increasing the yields and purity of vanadium prepared by bomb reduction of vanadium compounds . Compounds reduced were V₂ 05 , V203 , VC , and VC13 . Sodium , calcium , and magnesium were used as reductants . Variables considered included reductant form , bomb size , pressure during reaction , method of ignition , and the use of slag fluidizing additives . It was concluded that yields of 85 to 90 percent can be effected by the calcium reduction of V205 in reactors measuring as much as 14 inches in diameter and 60 inches in height . Optimum charge composition included V₂05 , 65 percent excess calcium , and 0.4 moles sulfur per mole vanadium . Purity of the vanadium produced in large reactors varied from 99.5 to 99.8 percent . The higher purity metal , depending upon the amounts of interstitial impurities present , was usually cold ductile . Although high yields of up to 99.5 percent can be effected by bomb reduction of VC1 , the high pressures developed in the bombs and attack of the reactor walls by the byproduct chloride slags discourages this method of preparing vanadium . It was found that significant purification of impure regulus metal occurred when it was hydrided , crushed , acid leached , and vacuum dehydrided . Metal so treated can readily be converted to ductile sheet . A cost estimate based on the production of 100 tons of vanadium per year was prepared . It was concluded that pure ductile vanadium could be produced for approximately $ 20.00 per pound .

The South African base metals industry has been one mainly focused on the production of metals or metal compounds from primary ores. This is true for metals such as titanium, vanadium, chrome, manganese, cobalt, nickel, copper, zinc and aluminium. The steel making industry has traditionally used a substantial portion of scrap steel, and could thus be considered to be somewhat of an exception. Secondary sources have played much less of a role, possibly due to at least some of the following factors. Scrap material is often of unknown composition, and thus it requires additional chemical analysis, and possibly special treatment. Tonnages are relatively small, and the incorporation of secondary materials is possibly seen to carry undue risk and inadequate benefit. South African consumers are still not very conservation and recycling conscious, which limits the amount of scrap made available. This attitude might also be expected to influence decision makers in these industries. Finally, pressure from environmentally motivated activists locally has not been unduly large. This landscape has been changing, and is continuing to do so. Various municipal authorities such as those of Pretoria, Johannesburg and Cape Town are reporting increasingly limited landspace for waste (Bondolfi, 2007). There are increasing concerns regarding the leaching of hazardous metals such as chromium, mercury and cadmium from landfill waste, especially electronic and electric wastes ? the so-called eWastes. In more developed countries such as the United States of America and Western Europe the problem of eWaste has grown to the extent where legislation has been enacted, such as the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) legislation of the EU (European Union Directive 2002/96/EC). The 19th and 20th centuries have seen major technological advances. Relevant to this paper is the availability of centrally generated electrical power, telecommunication, entertainment through recorded and transmitted music and images, the growth and pervasive influence of electronics, and the handling of digital data by computers and microprocessors. These developments have placed ever increasing demands on resources for the manufacture of electrical and electronic equipment, as well as on the generation of electrical power. "Solvent extraction followed by electrowinning (SXEW) is an economical option for the processing of low grade and oxidized copper ore. Phenomenological models were developed to simulate the copper solvent extraction and the electrowinning processes. The two models were linked together to make a SX/EW simulator. The simulator is used to predict the operation of the mines Gaspe pilot plant put in operation in 1996. Results confirm the potential of the simulation that would subsequently be used for student training, process optimization and to assess the performances of control strategies.INTRODUCTIONSolvent extraction followed by electrowinning (SXEW) has become in the last two decades a key process for the recovery of copper from solution obtained by leaching low grade copper ore. Several operations have been commissioned in North and South Americas in the last decade (Arbiter, 1994). In Canada, Gibraltar Mine (Scott, 1991) operates a SX plant followed by electrowinning (EW) to produce copper cathode from leached low-grade ore dumps. From 1996 to 1997 Mines Gaspe operated a pilot plant to test the economical feasibility of leaching an oxidized copper ore, followed by solvent extraction and electrowinning of copper. Despite copper SX/EW processes have the reputation of being low cost operations, plant engineers should always look at way to make the plant more efficient. Process models provide an economic platform to learn, control and ultimately optimize the operation of a plant.Several models have been independently proposed to simulate the SX process (Cadman and Hsu, 1970; Medina Gomez, 1980; Wilkinson and Ingham, 1983; Garcia et al., 1988; Aminian et al., 1997) and the EW process (Bryson, 1981; Barton and Scott, 1992; Barton and Scott, 1993). However few papers, if any, deal with the integration of the two process models into a single simulator of a SX-EW plant. This paper describes the development of an integrated simulator for the SX-EW process and shows some steady-state simulation runs of an actual SX-EW pilot plant. The paper consists of four sections. The first section shows the general layout and principles of operation of a SX-EW plant.The second section describes the SX model while the third section deals with the process model used for the copper electrowinning process. The last section shows how the two process models are linked to simulate the operation of the Gaspe pilot plant."
