The current Automatic Data Acquisition system developed by some support manufacturers make it possible to monitor and record changes in leg pressure, DA RAM stroke in every shield and shearer position at any moment during mining operation. But how can these massive data (more than 1 MB for every 3 hrs for the current scanning option) be effectively used for improving production and maintenance management as well as providing better roof control at a longwall face? The research currently conducted jointly by WWU and Cyprus Amax Minerals at Emerald Mine and Twentymile Mine attempts to answer this question and make the data, especially leg pressure, more meaningful. A computer software package has been being developed to (1) determine mining cycles, cycle time, face advance rate, production rates, machinery delays, and production delays for each shift; (2) identify defective sensors, check valves, yield valves, by-passing leg and DA RAM cylinders, and other hydraulic and electrical abnormalities; (3) determine the roof weighting period; (4) evaluate the performance of the current shield support design - demand relationships; and (5) predict and overcome ensuing encroaching problems and roof conditions ahead of the face.

THE particular field of application of machines utilizing air currents as the primary separating medium is in the cleaning of the fine sizes of bituminous coal. Approximately 12,000,000 tons of bituminous coal were cleaned by air machines during 1940.They have not found any application for cleaning anthracite. Since the development and introduction of the first successful commercial pneumatic oscillating machine for cleaning bituminous coal in 1916, by the Sutton, Steele and Steele Co., Dallas, Texas, and the American Coal Cleaning Corporation, formerly of Welch, W. Va., four other successful pneumatic coal-cleaning machines have been developed and introduced to the American coal-mining industry: 1. Peale Davis: "Pneumo-Gravity" machine, 1924. 2. Arms "Concentrator," oscillating table, 1924. 3. Hey1 and Patterson oscillating table, 1927. 4. "Stump Air-Flow," pulsating air jig, 1932. Out of these five developments only the Sutton, Steele and Steele, or American Oscillating, and the Stump Air-Flow Jig remain on the market. They are the predominating pneumatic coal-cleaning machines in use in the United States. HISTORY OF AMERICAX TYPE SEPARATOR The first successful American machine, the CJ table (Fig. 1) was developed by the Sutton, Steele and Steele Co. The SJ table was the first standard model designed specifically for the cleaning of coal. It was installed in the original Crane Creek plant, owned and operated by the American Coal Co. at McComas, West Virginia. This plant was designed by The Roberts and Schaefer Co., Chicago, Ill., working in cooperation with the American Coal Cleaning Corporation, which had taken over the patent rights and sale of the pneumatic separators. This paper, embodying information acquired by the writer in his work in connection with the Geological Survey of Minnesota, is presented by permission of the State Geologist. Historical.—On November 16, 1890, the workmen of Captain J. A. Nichols, of Duluth, Minn., encountered in a test-pit on the northwest quarter of section 3, township 58, range 18, west of the fourth principal meridian, the body of soft ore now called the Mountain Iron mine. Hard ore, chiefly magnetic, had been known for many years on the Mesabi range, and explorations made by Mr. E. W. Griffin, of Minneapolis, near the falls of Prairie river in T. 56-24 and T. 56-25, and by John Mallmann, at the Mallmann explorations, T. 59-14, had revealed some hard hematite interbedded with quartzite and low-grade soft ore; but this was the first discovery of merchantable hematite on the range. Captain Nichols had been exploring more or less along the range for some two years. To him and to the Merritt brothers, of Duluth and Oneota, who, unshaken in Faith by the discouraging reports of explorers, miners, experts, and geologists, had persevered in the search for ore, great credit is due for the final success, and large rewards have accrued to them already.

"The detection and quantification of the degree of weathering is an important aspect of coal exploration and mining. Tests for weathering which are suitable for the exploration camp should be fast, simple, and require minimal equipment and operator expertise. In this study, two tests which fulfill these requirements were evaluated using samples of Western Canadian coals. These tests, one based on the pH of a coal slurry and the other on the flotation of coal in a water/diesel oil mixture, do not appear to give consistent results and are not recommended as ideal weathering parameters.IntroductionThe weathering of coal results in a deterioration of those properties which render it suitable for use in industrial processes. Consequently, the detection and quantification of the degree of weathering is an important aspect of exploration and mining. Frequently, decisions related to the depth of the weathered zone must be made at the exploration camp and, therefore, tests for weathering which are fast, and require relatively inexpensive and portable equipment and minimal operator experience, would be very useful. The aim of the study reported here was to evaluate two tests used by U. S. Steel Corp. to detect coal weathering and which satisfy the requirements for use in an exploration camp. The study is a continuation of a more extensive examination of the detection of coal weathering by various methods, reported elsewhere (Marchioni, in press)."

Northwest Alloys, a wholly owned subsidiary of Alcoa, produces magnesium from dolomite by reduction with ferrosilicon and aluminum. This process produces alkaline by-products in quantities that allow their consideration for use as commercial by-products. Two such products are dicalcium silicate slag, Di-Cal, and magnesium oxide condensate, MgO. The alkaline properties of these materials offer acid neutralizing capability comparable to the traditionally used lime, therefore, warranting a study for their use in applications where the neutralization of acidic waters or process solutions is required, such as treatment of mine waters. In this ongoing study, three mine waters (Bunker HillMine, Berkeley Pit, and Blackbird Mine) were selected for treatment with Di-Cal and MgO. Lime was used as the background control. The solid precipitates were subsequently contacted with pure water at four different pH conditions for stability testing of prepared metal precipitates (expanded TCLP). It was found that neutralization with Di-Cal results in precipitates which are of equivalent to superior stability than those from lime treatment.

Australia is the Western world's largest producer of alumina, supplying one third of total needs. Western Australia's South-West has the greatest concentration of alumina production in the world, with a current annual production rate in the region of 6.8 million tonnes per annum, over 20 per cent of the total supplied to market economies. The value of this production in 1989-90 was 2.34 billion dollars, a very significant contribution to the economy of the State (1). This is despite the fact that the bauxite from the Darling Range is the lowest grade that has ever been commercially exploited, and despite the geographical isolation of the region. It is therefore of great importance to the National and State economies that this industry retain its competitive edge, particularly in the current times of economic downturn. One essential ingredient of this competetiveness is technology and innovation, which can be assured by the committment of the industry to an active program of Research and Development, with support from the public sector as Appropriate.

"As a part of the FUME research programme being done by the Norwegian Ferroalloy Research Association (FFF), the SINTEF Group and NTNU, several measurements towards quantifying the gaseous and solid emissions from the draining of the silicon furnaces for metal have been carried out.Based on the measured size distribution of the formed fume particles and known particle growth theory, an estimate of the growth time for the given particles has been calculated. The formation time for the measured NO amount has also been calculated based on the fume measurements and a thermodynamic model of the furnace gases combusting with air. The two “formation” times are in the same order of magnitude and they are therefore used as parameters in a CFD model, modelling that the formed fume particles are heating up the surrounding air and thereby forming NO according to the Zeldovich mechanism. The measurements show an approximately equal constant NO formation per fume particle. The CFD model shows results in the same order of magnitude, supporting that the particle growth and NO formation happen under near stoichiometric conditions and are controlled by the formation of SiO2 fume.IntroductionNOx is the common notion for the two gases nitric oxide (NO) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2) formed during combustion of fuels. A new class of ternary Mg-Sn-Ca alloys is being developed to address the dual demands of corrosion and creep resistance at service temperatures. While tin has proven to enhance the corrosion resistance, calcium is expected to significantly increase their creep resistance of binary magnesium alloys. Their effects in ternary magnesium alloys are not yet known. The series of alloys studied has Sn and Ca in the ranges 3-6% and 1¬2%, respectively. The results indicate that these alloys have two-phase structures with CaMgSn phase dispersed in a matrix that is predominantly a solid solution of magnesium. The corrosion behavior of these alloys has been investigated by means of salt spray tests and potentio-dynamic measurements. Creep behavior of these alloys was measured at a temperature of 135 C under an applied compressive stress of 85 MPa. Scanning Electron Microscopy with Energy Dispersive X-ray facility and X-ray Diffraction techniques were used to characterize the microstructures. The results indicate the prospect of designing alloys that can provide optimum combinations of corrosion and creep resistance by adjusting the relative compositions of Sn and Ca in the system.

The recent development of galvanic cell-type hydrogen sensor for molten copper was outlined. The principle of the sensing mechanism, the fundamental structure of the sensor, and its performance as a process control device are discussed based on experimental work undertaken by the authors. Besides sensors based on usual perovskite-type proton conducting oxide, those using magnesium-doped alpha alumina, which was recently known as a proton conductor, were investigated and the results at the laboratory scale are reported. Considering the excellent sensitivity at high temperature and the stability to the disturbance from the attendant oxygen activity, magnesium-doped alpha alumina was regarded to be a superior material for the sensors used for such purposes.

This study summarizes the ventilation requirements for a highly mechanized P.T.Freeport Indonesia's underground mine operation in Irian Jaya, Indonesia. The Deep Ore Zone (DOZ) is a copper-gold deposit being developed underneath the current Intermediate Ore Zone (IOZ) mine. One of company's current plans is to prepare this mine for a steady oreflow of 25,000 tpd by year 2003. This study includes the estimation of airflow requirements for various mining activities, the design of major intakes and returns, the determination of airway resistances and specifications of fan duties. It also includes the results of air pressure/quantity measurements in existing airways and the standards stated by the current Indonesian mining law.

Traditionally, 16"/50 caliber projectile shells have been fabricated from forged steel. The Naval Surface Warfare Center (NAVSWC) has determined that cost savings of approximately 60% (-$4.7M/year) as well as improved shell fragmentation can be achieved by casting these shells from austempered ductile iron. One of the technical concerns arising out of this material substitution is the role of the casting process in controlling the quality of the cast shells. Optimizing the process through proper orientation of the mold, placement of chills, superheat, etc., can minimize shrinkage porosity and, consequently, flaw size. For this purpose, the mold filling and subsequent solidification of the projectiles was simulated using a 3-D, fully transient, coupled fluid flow and heat transfer model based on finite differences. Several casting orientations were investigated and the casting parameters were varied to optimize the process and minimize casting defects. A comprehensive software tool, which was developed using state-of- the-art visualization techniques, has been used to analyze the process of casting. Emphasis is placed on the use of this visualization tool as an aid to the foundry engineer for process optimization.

"A thermodynamic model is developed to simulate nickel flash smelting process. In the nickel flash furnace, oxidation of concentrate occurs at one end, and reduction of slag occurs at the other. The model makes use two zones, namely the reaction shaft/settler zone and the appendage zone and accounts for 6 phases (matte, slag, silica, magnetite, Cu-Ni alloy and gaseous phase), 13 elements (Ni, Co, Cu, Fe, S, 0, N, C, H, Si, Al, Mg and Ca) and 33 chemical components in nickel flash smelting system. The compositions of matte, slag and gaseous phases in equilibrium are calculated by using the data of free energies of formation and activity coefficients of components. Two nickel sulfide species are used to allow for the modeling of sulfur-deficient mattes. The model predictions are compared with the known industrail data from Kalgoorlie Nickel Smelter, and excellent agreement is obtained. The model can be a very useful tool for monitoring and optimizing the actual industrial operations of nickel smelting process. The distribution behaviors of Ni, Co, Cu, Fe, S and 0 in the nickel smelting furnace depend on the process parameters such as smelting temperature, volumes of air, the content of the elements~ charge and oil.1. IntroductionThe nickel flash smelting furnace essentially consists of a reaction shaft where nickel sulfide concentrate is partially oxidized with air, a settle zone where matte and slag are allowed to separate, and a slag cleaning end where coke is added to provide for the reduction of the oxidized nickel from slag, and electrodes are used to provide heat.The theoretical model to consider a mass balance for copper flash furnace is developed by S. Goto and R. Shimpo[1][2J. However, this can not be true for nickel flash furnace as a whole since oxidation of concentrate occurs at one end (in the reaction shaft/settler), and reduction of slag occurs at the other (in the appendage). Despite these limitations, an acceptable pseudo-thermodynamic description of the furnace can be achieved using essentially two zones, namely the reaction shaft/settler zone and the appendage zone. Compositions of gas, slag and matte in two zones are calculated."

In this paper, a model for the resin anchor bolt system is developed in which the smooth bar is modeled by using one-dimensional truss elements and the resin annulus is modeled by using axisymmetric elements. These two submodels are combined together and then incorporated into the' existing computer code ROOFBOLT. After this development, all of the components in the resin anchor bolt system including smooth bar, bearing plate and resin annulus can be correctly modeled.

Uniform needle-like and spherical nickel oxalate particles were prepared by the chelating precipitation process, which was based on the reaction of oxalate acid and the solution of ammonia nickel chloride. The molar ratio of ammonia to nickel ion in the mixed solution is essential to determine whether the spherical or needle-like particles are formed, which means actually the concentration of ammonia is the key to determine the growth mechanism. When oxalate acid is added in the form of solid, it may act as the nucleation interface for the eariy-precipitated substance and so induce the formation of spherical particles. The PVP agent can improve the dispersing degree of the needle-like particles and higher reacting temperature leads to larger particles. The composition of the needle-like particle consists of ammonium and nickel oxalate instead of the pure nickel oxalate.

The size of rock fragments depends on the nature of the loading applied the strength of the minerals and the texture of the rock. Research in the literature demonstrates that there is a distinct difference in the rock fracturing process for static and cyclic loading. The tensile strength of brittle rocks is also one of the most significant parameters influencing the rock fracturing process and the propagation of micro-fractures on the crushing, blasting and cutting of rock. The Brazilian indirect tensile test, one of the methods approved by the International Society for Rock Mechanics (ISRM), has been used to determine rock fracture behaviour under different cyclic loading modes. In this study, the dimensions of Brisbane Tuff specimens have been selected according to the method outlined by the ISRM. The main aim of this study is to evaluate the effect of cyclic loading amplitude and frequency on the Fracture Process Zone (FPZ) at the micro-, meso- and macro-scales. The post-failure behaviour of the Brisbane Tuff specimens was obtained under cyclic loading with frequencies varied from 1 to 10 Hz. The amplitude was varied from 10% of Ultimate Tensile Strength (UTS) up to 80% UTS. Laboratory investigations of rock fragment size revealed that different loading frequencies and amplitudes produce different FPZ dimensions. Multivariate Analysis of Variance (MANOVA) results demonstrated that the FPZ dimension is relatively sensitive to the frequency change. Fragment size analysis showed that the FPZ is a consequence of the initiation, propagation and coalescence of micro-fractures and depends on the nature of the loading. Laboratory evidence showed that the FPZ dimension, for the cyclic tests performed on Brisbane tuff, is ranged from 0.07 to 20 mm. The achievement of this study highlights a key finding in the understanding of fracture patterns and propagation models in the FPZ under cyclic loading, which is the dominate mechanical action in the oscillator disc cutter (ODC).

"Nowadays, long periods of relatively low iron ore prices have made the steel industry get the greater pressure. To develop appropriate processing technology based on characteristics of the iron ore, so as to reduce the beneficiation costs, is crucial to the improvement of iron and steel enterprise competition. For a typical low-grade iron ore from northeast China, beneficiation process research was conducted based on the in-depth studies of ore characteristics. Results show that the iron grade of the ore was 31.56%, the content of FeO was 6.59%, the main iron minerals were hematite and magnetite with fine dissemination sizes and partly scattering in gangue; With the grinding fineness of 65% passing 0.074mm, and regrinding fineness of 90% passing 0.074mm, the concentrate with 66.80% iron and recovery of 82.90% was obtained via the combined flowsheet of stage grinding – classification – gravity concentration – low and high intensity magnetic separation – reverse flotation. Ratios of gravity concentration and low intensity magnetic separation were 70.21% and 7.57% respectively in 40.42% of total concentrate yield; The loss of micro-size fractions can be reduced by feeding spiral tailings into magnetic separation and flotation; It’s helpful in reducing the dosage of reagents and beneficiation costs by increasing the throughput of gravity concentration and outputting concentrate of low intensity magnetic separation.INTRODUCTION Iron and steel industries are facing the increasing pressures in the continued falling iron ore prices. In order to improve the competitiveness, it is extremely urgent for them to develop more appropriate separation process for the reduction in iron ore beneficiation cost. As a typical low-grade iron ore, Anshan-type iron ore is one of the most important iron ore resources in China [1-3]. The flowsheet of stage grinding and separation contained the classification of the coarse particles and the fine particles, the gravity concentration, the magnetic separation and the anionic reverse flotation has been widely applied for Anshan-type iron ore. With the appropriate separation progress as well as equipment, satisfactory separation results had been obtained, and mineral particles with different size were recovered separately [4-7]. However, the low recovery of fine mineral particles and the relatively high beneficiation costs still prevented the efficient application of the process [8]. For a Anshan-type low-grade iron ore, a typical process flowsheet, as mentioned earlier, with stage grading, classification of the coarse particles and the fine particles, gravity concentration, magnetic separation, anionic reverse flotation was adopted currently. And the concentrate with 67.10% iron and recovery of 75.50% was obtained and the gravity concentrate accounted for 39% of the total concentrate. However, a large amount of fine liberated iron ore particles were lost in the tailings."

"This article summarises the efforts to reduce the energy consumption in grinding in a magnetite ore beneficiation plant. ArcelorMittal Kryvyi Rih ore beneficiation plant produces magnetite concentrate at 65% Fe and 8% SiO2, of which the D80 is approximately 44µm after three stages of grinding with ball mills and magnetic separation. Characterisation and laboratory scale bench tests performed on samples from the beneficiation plant indicate that the industrial flowsheet could be simplified. After the first stage of grinding and magnetic separation, a significant size fraction of the intermediate concentrate is already well liberated. Therefore, it can be directly concentrated in a second stage magnetic separation without further grinding. If a screen of 150µm size can be implemented after the first stage of grinding-magnetic separation, only the oversize of screening, representing 35% of the material, requires secondary and tertiary grinding and magnetic separation. The combined concentrate from the two fractions already meets the industrial specifications. This new route can provide the same final product, with fewer mills; it saves around 30% in energy consumption only in the grinding step without changing the main structures of the processing plant.INTRODUCTION Comminution, including crushing and grinding, is responsible for at least 40% of total energy usage in mining and mineral processing. This paper shows an example to reduce grinding cost, by changing the flow sheet design strategy in ArcelorMittal Kryvyi Rih (AMKR).AMKR is one of the most important mining and steel complexes in Krivoy Rog basin in Ukraine, which has been studied over 100 years because of mining of iron ores. The iron ores are associated to Banded Iron Formation of the Saksagan suite, with an average iron grade of around 36 percent Fe. The total thickness of the Krivoy Rog Supergroup reaches 5-6 km, whereas that of the iron-ore Saksagan Group comprises up to 1400 m. High-grade iron ore extends to more than 2,000 m below present surface"

The impingement onto the surface of bath by top-blown jets is a significant process characteristic in BOF and EAF steelmaking process. The cavity is one of the most important outcomes of the interaction and plays an important role on reaction kinetics and reactors performance. But to date, the understanding to cavity is still so limited. In present study, a water model for a BOF converter is established and the dimension of cavity profile is investigated. The effects of lance height, gas flow rate, nozzle inclination angle and the amounts of slag are discussed. The results show that penetration depth increases with the increase of gas flow rate and the amount of slag, and the decrease of lance height and nozzle inclination angle. Furthermore, a theoretical model of cavity dimension is proposed for multiply jets impinging liquid bath on the basis of energy balance at the stagnation point of cavity.
