Data obtained from mine ventilation pressure and quantity surveys are required to accurately diagnose ventilation problems, project future air quantity needs, and to locate conditions adversely affecting the efficiency of a mine ventilation system. A method for making mine ventilation pressure surveys with aneroid altimeters was presented in Bureau of Mines Information Circular 7809, and a description of field calculation technique is presented. This report supplements Information Circular 7809 by developing the information obtained during a mine ventilation pressure survey into a single equation suitable, with appropriate modification, for use with desk-top calculators and digital computers. The equation can be used to calculate the ventilation pres sure from the base station to any underground station, or between any two underground stations, and can be programed for semiautomatic sequential calculation using a desk-top calculator. An example of application to a programed desk-top calculator is provided in the appendix.

A common practice in the mining industry is to decompose the planning process into different tasks, so the overall process and specific schedules can be constructed easily. Nevertheless, currently there are some adverse effects, such as not capturing the real value of a project by not taking into account the construction of several underground drifts and general infrastructure. Then the common practice is to compute mining sequence and cut-off grade profiles over the life of the mine without constitutively integrating the development schedule as a means to measure the constructability of a given mine design and sequence. Thus, the investigation summarised in this paper shows a novel, integrative way of treating an underground mine sequence and production schedule while considering drift development scheduling. Moreover, it is thought that, because of this original model, the whole underground production scheduling exercise must concentrate on combining the development and the production scheduling to compute a robust and a feasible production schedule.In order to quantify the effect of the conventional way of viewing the planning, the concept of the building information model (BIM) needs to be used, which was postulated by Charles Eastman and has been used extensively since the late 1970s. BIM takes other aspects of a project into account, considering at the same time the spatial relationships, quantities and properties of building components, but especially some kind of model visualisation, which is the advantage to be incorporated. This paper presents the basis for an optimisation model that allows for defining the sequence of the mining development so that the production plan can be achieved. For this, the model considers the space dimensions, time, pattern or strategy, cost or benefit, precedence and resources available. Tests were performed considering a block caving and sublevel open stoping method. Finally these tests showed the main conclusion, that production sequence changes when the building capacity is considered.

The past several decades have seen the rapid expansion of multinational mining companies? exploration and production activities around the globe. This trend has resulted from a number of factors, including increased demand for resources as a result of worldwide economic growth, the diminishment of known and proven reserves, rising commodity prices, technology improvements, and the liberalization of investment regimes in developing countries with significant natural resources. With those opportunities, however, come associated risks and significantly increased legal compliance obligations that may be imposed by various bodies. That includes domestic regulations, as well as foreign civil and criminal laws with extraterritorial reach. A failure to adhere to those laws can have dire consequences, including substantial monetary fines and penalties, severe damage to a company?s reputation, and even jail time for individual company employees.

Debswana, owned by the Government of the Republic of Botswana (GRB) and De Beers in a 50:50 joint venture partnership, operates the Jwaneng diamond mine in Botswana - the most valuable diamond mine in the world. The mine provides between 60 - 70 per cent of DebswanaÆs earnings, and about 30 - 40 per cent of the GRBÆs income. In 2008, the company embarked on the Cut 8 Project - an open pit waste cut-back to expose more diamond bearing ore to sustain mine life by another six to seven years. This undertaking was much larger than previous cut-backs; it increased the waste stripping ratio threefold, increasing significantly the waste handling fleet of trucks, shovels and infrastructure, and impacted a large part of the materials handling plant which required replacement with new facilities. The project coincided with the beginning of the Global Financial Crisis (GFC) and a slowdown in the economy. Its $4 billion total life cost was billed as æthe largest private investment project in BotswanaÆ which produced heightened expectations amongst stakeholders that it would redress some of the issues brought about by the GFC and leave behind a legacy of jobs, increased opportunities for citizen owned business and improved social infrastructure.Most of the big project challenges were non-technical and ranged from dealing with various stakeholders?at?all levels, a 25 per cent currency depreciation of the Botswana Pula against the South African Rand, obtaining work permits for non-citizens in a job starved environment, managing construction to world class safety standards, managing the low productivity of construction workers and producing a viable legacy program that satisfied the GRB and stakeholders. Whilst most of these risks were identified in front end studies, the magnitudes were in many instances underestimated. Managing this uncertainty on Cut 8 can provide valuable lessons to other projects in a similar environment, or at least provide the information to indicate that these factors should be adequately provided for in the financial evaluation of a project in the form of budget, schedule, contingency or risk mitigation.CITATION:Jones, G M and J Rademan, 2012. This report is a compilation of results of preliminary concentration tests of seven manganese-ore samples. Six of the seven samples were submitted through the Mining Division, and 1 from Mexico was submitted by H. A. Doerner, formerly chief metallurgist, Region III. These investigations were made to assist development of mineral resources and particularly to aid economical exploitation of marginal or complex ores, from which strategic or critical minerals may be recovered.

The former Gwynfynydd gold mine is located within the heart of the Snowdonia National Park, North Wales, United Kingdom. The black shale-hosted quartz reefs have intermittently produced more than 50 000 ounces of gold since 1863. Its most recent period of operation by Welsh Gold PLC was between 1992 and 1999 when it extracted 10 000 tonnes annually from a total resource base of 180 000 tonnes. A historical mining grade of 15 grammes/tonne was recovered from the Chidlaw Reef on which all production was based. Erratically distributed gold pockets hosted in the footwall zone of a 3 - 6 m wide quartz reef characterise the mineralisation. The gold exhibits a high-nugget effect and as a consequence the accurate determination of tonnage and grade was difficult. Production was undertaken by overhand shrinkage stoping. Due to its location within a National Park certain environmental constraints were placed on the operators. The principal requirement of planning permission was that processing should take place above ground and not involve chemicals. As a result, an underground mill based on physical separation methods was constructed in response to these environmental constraints. Much of the mine discharge is related to the flow of rainwater through the workings from surface openings on the reefs. Discharge from the underground milling facility was enhanced in various metals, particularly zinc, though was reduced to legally acceptable levels using liming tanks prior to discharge into the River Mawddach. The company was required to monitor and treat all water discharged from the mine before it reached the river. The mine closed in 1999, since which time a tip re-processing has continued as part of an environmental remediation and gold supply program.

The business of heap leaching requires accurate forecasting of metal production from the heaps. Business forecasts typically follow a format that project periodic (monthly, quarterly, or annual) product shipments based on anticipated operating results, e. g., tons of ore placed, grade of ore, and rate of leach extraction. Since revenue and cash flow are dependent on the metal production stream, forecasts of metal production are very important for project evaluation and business planning purposes. Nevertheless, production forecasts, particularly for new heap leach projects, have been prone to errors. The present paper identifies some of the pitfalls that would be encountered in preparing production forecasts for new heap leach operations and provides a checklist of considerations to assist in preparing a forecast. Also, the paper presents a case study of copper production forecasting used for the Sanchez Project, a heap leach operation located near Safford, Arizona, that is presently under development by AZCO Mining, Inc.

This paper is the second report of the results of the United States Bureau of Mines twenty-third semiannual survey of motor fuel marketed in the United States. The first paper, reporting data relating to gravity, vapor pressure, and distillation range of the samples, was published as Report of Investigations 31293. A third and concluding paper giving the results of other tests will be published as soon as these tests have been completed. The present paper deals with the data of the twenty-third semiannual survey presented in accordance with the revised specifications for United States Government motor gasoline. The sample numbers used are identical with those used in Report of Investigations 3129, with additional data included for copper strip corrosion (method 530.22).4 and sulphur content by the lamp method.5 Three hundred and twelve samples were collected and analyzed in this survey. Two hundred and seven samples were competitive-price gasolines and one hundred and five samples were premium-price motor fuels.6

The Cadia Valley Operations currently hosts a large operational open pit, a large operational sublevel caving underground mine and two other underground projects at the study stage. This scenario creates an unusual situation for the evaluation and planning of a fifth major open pit project. The Cadia East Open Pit is a large gold-copper development located adjacent to the operational open pit and above one of the underground projects. A study team is conducting a comprehensive and robust analysis of the target orebody. Two key factors for this project include the existing and planned projects within the valley and the wide range of available mining methods. The aim for the study team is to present an optimal and practical case which suits the entire Cadia Valley Operation. A rigorous and robust analysis of the situation requires that each factor be properly evaluated. A modular system has been developed which allows the wide range of scenarios to be quickly and meaningfully considered. Sensitivities for each module drive the further development of that particular module. As each scenario progresses, an assessment is made evaluating its value, strategic value and practicality. In such a way, the number of scenarios is gradually reduced at each stage to produce a final short list of feasible cases. Each scenario on the shortlist is then assessed with regard to the existing operations and other projects. A qualitative and quantitative analysis is made. This ranking is used to provide the recommended case.

One of the steps in the extractive metallurgy of lead is a refining process called drossing. Hot dross is mixture of impurity compounds that form on the surface during the cooling of lead blast furnace bullion, and in Missouri, the main impurities are copper and sulfur. The slow cooling of bullion throws out of solution all other minor impurity elements (or their compounds) which are much less soluble at lower temperatures (mainly nickel, arsenic, iron, and zinc). The transfer of bullion from the blast furnace to the refinery and the subsequent hot drossing step cause fugitive emission of lead-containing fume and dust, which creates a plant hygiene problem. One cause of the emissions is the high vapor pressure of lead and its compounds during transmission of = 1000 °C bullion to the drossing kettle. Another cause is the lifting of dross dust during manual skimming of dross. The environmental problems associated with the traditional hot drossing process provided an incentive to investigate a new drossing process that avoids contact between plant air and hot bullion or dross. A key aspect of the process development was a detailed mineralogical examination of dross from two different bullions. The bullion samples were cooled at different rates, and the dross filtered out and examined. The morphology, phase identification, and composition of the dross was examined by optical and SEM microscopy. The principal dross phases were copper and cuprous sulfide, galena, a complex sulfide containing copper, nickel and lead, and speiss (containing nickel, cobalt, iron, copper, lead, and arsenic compounds). The copper was acicular, with nickel and arsenic in solid solution. The cuprous sulfide was largely digenite in a granular or dendritic form. A substantial part of the dross was solidified matte with a eutectic microstructure, consisting mainly of CU2S and PbS. Small particles (some of which had a eutectic microstructure) never floated to the surface of the lead during the slowest cooling rate, thus indicating that flotation of tiny matte droplets and dross crystals is exceedingly slow. The success in separating dross and lead by centrifugal filtration suggests its application in industry as a replacement for traditional hot drossing.

This report summarizes all relevant findings and conclusions regarding capabillty of high-energy projectile impact to operate effectively in an open pit mining environment and to successfully handle secondary breakage and bench scaling problems. A silenced, aimable, mobile projectile launcher was designed and fabricated, utilizing a Government-furnished smooth-bore, 90 mm cannon. The silenced launcher was tested at the contractor's test site prior to shipment to ANAMAX Mining Company's Twin Buttes Mine near Tucson, Arizona. Demonstration tests were conducted at an inactive waste dump in the mine on 39 oversize boulders to determine the relationship between boulder size and projectile energy required for secondary breakage. The high energy projectile impact method (known by the acronym REAM -Rapid Excavation and Mining) was tested on an additional 23 boulders in the working mine and on 31 areas of potentially loose rock high on the pit walls. Most of the secondary breakage tests were successful and acceptable for open-pit mining purposes without producing large amounts of fly rock. Five of the 31 scaling tests were successful with one shot, but most of the remainder required two or more shots, and a few could not be dislodged because they were not as loose as they appeared to be, based on visual examination from a distance. Cost comparisons between the REAM method and conventional methods of secondary breakage and bench scaling are discussed. A film documentary, REAM--Mining Applications of High Energy Projectile Impact, has been produced by the contractor depicting the applications of the silenced cannon.

Computer-related accidents have caused injuries and fatalities in mining as well as other industries. Normal accident theory (NAT) explains that some accidents are inevitable because of system complexity. NAT is a classic argument in organizational sociology although it has been criticized as having imprecise definitions and lacking criteria for quantifying complexity. These limitations are addressed by a unique approach that recasts this organizational theory into an engineering-based methodology to quantify NAT complexities of computer-based systems. In this approach complexity is categorized as external or internal. External complexity is defined by the external behavior of a system, and is quantified by these dependent variables: system predictability, observability, and usability. Dependent variable data contain the perceptions of 32 subjects running simulations of a system. The system?s internal complexity is characterized by modeling system-level requirements with the software cost reduction (SCR) formal method. Model attributes are quantified using 15 graph-theoretical metrics?the independent variables. Five of 15 metrics are correlated with the dependent variables as evidenced by structure correlations exceeding 0.25, with standard errors <0.10 and a 95% confidence interval. The results also show that the system predictability, observability, and usability decreased as NAT complexities increased. This research takes a step forward in operationalizing NAT for computerized systems. The research benefits mining and other industries as well.

In order to patent an industrial mineral placer mining claim, it must incorporate an economic deposit. Each ten acre parcel is evaluated for its mineral -in -character nature. Nonmineral -in -character parcels cannot be patented. Economic concerns include: claim locations, dummy locators, common variety nature, "excess reserves," and environmental constraints. Also, geologic and mineralogic studies, sampling and testing procedures are vital. Mining, milling, processing cost, and taxes must be evaluated. Product marketability analysis is necessary before starting any cash flow or discounted cash flow study. Valid data is essential to evaluate an economic industrial mineral deposit.

Minerals contribute to U.S. gross domestic product (GDP) at several levels ? from mining and processing to the manufacturing of Anished products. In 2009, the estimated real GDP of the United States decreased by 2.4 percent compared with, and the estimated nominal GDP was about $14.2 trillion (Table 1). Trends in various sectors of the domestic economy are often reflected in mineral production and consumption rates. In 2009, the continued decline of the housing market was reflected in reductions in the production and consumption of cement, clays, construction sand and gravel, and crushed stone (those mineral commodities that are used almost exclusively in construction). Production of mineral commodities associated with the manufacture of goods for the housing market, such as ceramic tile, heating and air conditioning equipment, paint, plumbing and sanitaryware, roofing, wiring and wallboard also decreased. "IntroductionThe Yellowknife greenstone belt lies along the west side of Yellowknife bay on the north shore of Great Slave lake, some 600 miles north of Edmonton, Alberta. The producing gold mines along the belt include the Con-Rycon and Negus which came into production in 1938 and 1939, and the Giant Yellowknife, which followed in 1948. In addition to these, the Akaitcho and Crestaurum mines are potential producers and there are several promising prospects.Early geological work along the belt was done by A. W. Jolliffe who first recognized a number of great faults, the largest of which is the West Bay fault with a horizontal movement of more than 3 miles. In 1943, A. S. Dadson, following an examination of the Giant-Yellowknife property, advanced the hypothesis that Baker Creek valley was underlain by a series of major gold-bearing shear zones. Subsequent diamond drilling in 1944 bore out the correctness of this view and outlined the great ore-bearing shear zones that are now being developed and mined by Giant Yellowknife Gold Mines. Near the south boundary of the Giant property, the shear zones are cut off by the West Bay fault. This prompted Neil Campbell, District Geologist for the Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company, to make a detailed study of the geology along the West Bay fault in the hope of finding the faulted extension of the Giant shear-zone system on the west side of this fault. In this he was entirely successful. By careful geological mapping he matched several faulted diabase dykes on both sides of the fault and, knowing their dip, determined the horizontal and vertical components of movement along the fault. Subsequent •diamond drilling based on Campbell's work located the presumed correlative of the Giant shear-zone system on the Con-Rycon and Negus properties, where it has been named the Campbell zone or system. At the present time, all production at the Negus Mines property is coming from orebodies along the Campbell zone."

"The parameters of airborne minerallic particulates which create industrial dustiness, together with the physiological hazards caused by their inhalation, are reviewed. Various techniques of dust sampling are discussed and analysed, and the parameters referred to above are classified as the basis for methods of assessing the physical, chemical and mineralogical characteristics of dust-particle suspensions. The paper surveys those methods of assessment currently accepted by various statutory authorities, and reviews other methods that warrant attention and newer techniques that are being developed."

Line One, installed in 1963, was built by Lurgi as a downdraft process furnace utilizing a furnace fan for the recuperation of hot gases from the cooling zone. This line was modified in 1966 to include both updraft drying and downdraft drying, and the original roof burners were converted to side-wall burners. Line Two, a Dravo-Lurgi furnace with an annual capacity of 2.4 million long tons, was built in 1966. These data show 30 per cent lower fuel oil consumption and 10 per cent higher capacity per unit grate area for the Dravo-Lurgi furnace, which also averages higher availability due to greater operating flexibility."

Mineral economics, as one of the foundations of mineral policy research, has grown accordingly. Policy research and analysis has been carried out within governments, university departments and the private sector. Each of these institutional environments has characteristics which influence the topics of study, the approach, the methodology and the output of the research. A brief survey of recent research activities provides illustrations of trends and developments occurring within this organizational framework.A radically different organization, the independent research institute, has begun to make an impact on policy research in recent years, and will have an increasing importance in the future. Combining certain features of the traditional research organizations, it nevertheless has important differences which are essential to its effective functioning. An overview of the formation, goals, organization and operation of one such institute is presented."
