Creating technology, securing patent rights, and managing a patent portfolio are time-sensitive and dynamic activities. Agreements should be in place with technology partners (employees, contractors, joint venture partners), prior to embarking on research and development projects, so as to mitigate future disputes over patent rights. Technology partners should be educated on patent law basics so as to be mindful of patent bar triggering events. Accurate records must be maintained to capture information relevant for preparation and filing of patent application, including subject matter, names of inventors, and invention date. Developed inventions should be evaluated for whether to file for patent protection, delay patenting until technology is further developed, maintain trade secrecy, or effect deliberate public disclosure. Once decision is made to file for patent protection, time is of the essence, and application for patent protection should be filed as soon as possible, as many countries award patents on a "first-to file" basis. Decisions on where to file are made having regard to potential competitive advantages versus cost considerations, and can be delayed by taking advantage of priority rights recognized in patent legislation of most countries. Once patents are granted, competitors must be policed for potential patent infringement, and legal action may be necessary to prevent patent infringement.

Bacterial leaching tests have been carried out on Portugese pyritic ores containing zinc, copper, lead and silver as valuable elements. Both indigenous and isolated strains of Thiobacillus ferrooxidans were used. During the tests the factors pH, Eh and dissolved oxygen were measured and related to the leaching activity of the bacteria. Different means to estimate or determine the real bacteria concentration were examined. The influence of nutrient media and particle size has been evaluated. The role of galvanic couples was studied by electrical linking of mineralogical samples of pyrite, sphalerite and chalcopyrite. Leach residues were examined by optical microscopy to follow the mineralogical alterations during the leaching. The results show a rather good leaching of the sphalerite. However, the dissolution of copper from chalcopyrite is much more difficult, 50 % recovery never being obtained.

Commissioned in September 1987, the Phelps Dodge Morenci, Inc. (PDMI) Central Electrowinning (EW) Tankhouse bas undergone two major expansions in its eleven-year history. A third tankhouse renovation, which began in November 1998, entails complete conversion of the 548-cell facility from a copper starter sheet based operation to Mt. Isa Process stainless steel mother blank technology. This paper outlines the operating history of the Central EW Tankhouse and reviews the conversion process, the rationale that led PDMI to undertake this project, and describes various design optimizations which have been implemented during the conversion.

Microwave processing has been under continuous development as an advanced heating method in modern industries. However, problems with uneven heating still remain. Although heating uniformity is highly dependant on the properties of the materials being heated, proper furnace design to prevent uneven field distribution is another important factor. As an alternative to experimental measurements and adjustments to find appropriate furnace parameters, computer simulation is a convenient method for modeling, understanding, and improving the uniformity of microwave heating. This paper discusses current modeling technologies as well as applicable techniques for improving microwave heating uniformity. The purpose is to give a basic understanding on how to find, analyze, and minimize the problems associated with uneven heating in microwave processing.

In recent years the CollaMat process has been used successfully worldwide in a number of copper electrorefining tankhouses as an instrument for measuring the glue concentration and optimizing cathode quality. Owing to its measuring principles the CollaMat can be used not just for measuring the concentration of active glue but also the activity of other substances, which have an impact similar to glue on the copper deposition. In SX-EW plants guar is frequently used instead of glue as a levelling additive. In our laboratory the effect (activity) and the decomposition rate of guar in copper electrolyte was examined. As expected, the results show that guar has an effect similar to glue on the copper deposition. However, at the same temperature, a greater quantity of guar is required to achieve the same results. As with glue, the decomposition rate (due to hydrolysis) of guar is strongly dependent on the temperature. Therefore, in practice, its on-line monitoring is necessary to guarantee the same guar activity at any time.

Nitride capacity is usually employed as the measure of slag?s ability to remove nitrogen from liquid metal, since nitrogen distribution ratio between slag and metal can be calculated from nitride capacity provided that the value of oxygen activity in liquid metal is available. However, during liquid metal refining processes, oxygen activity in liquid metal is usually unknown and thus it is impossible to get nitrogen distribution ratio from nitride capacity under this usual condition. In this paper, thermodynamic analysis indicates that the activity coefficient of nitride in slag can be used to measure slag?s ability to remove nitrogen from liquid metal, because nitrogen distribution ratio between slag and metal can be calculated from the activity coefficient of nitride in slag provided that the content of oxygen potential controlling element like Al in liquid metal is available. Review of reported nitrogen removal studies and our recent study has verified that for a given Al content in metal, the lower the AlN activity coefficient in slag is, the higher the nitrogen distribution ratio. Titanium monoxide based slag has been found to be much more effective to remove nitrogen than other slags. Since Al content in liquid metal is usually available during liquid metal refining processes, AlN seems to be a better measure of slag?s ability to remove nitrogen from liquid metal.

Mineral processing plants typically procure a range of industrial services from contractors. Their satisfaction and value received is directly affected by how the services are procured, rationalized and delivered. Conventional purchasing strategies often focus on price rather than on optimizing the service relationship between supplier and customer. The nature of this relationship may have the greatest potential to reduce costs and enhance production. It has been documented that a service involves simultaneous production and consumption. A high degree of customer involvement is often necessary for a successful outcome and the expectations and attitudes of the customer can positively or negatively affect delivery of the service. This indicates that the customer can enhance or diminish their own satisfaction and value received and the supplier cannot act alone for best results. The Optimax? Program for industrial services is a service delivery framework whereby a customer and supplier work together to raise the efficiency of the service exchange. The Optimax? Program is intended to help the customer optimize costs and maximize production by connecting the customer and supplier through shared information and objectives. This paper will review the basic nature of services, provide a couple of examples of conventional procurement strategies for services and outline the features of the Optimax? Program. A Case Study showing recent results from implementing the Optimax? Program will be included.

PT. Smelting Co. was established in February, 1996 to construct and operate the Gresik Smelter and Refinery. The construction work of first Copper Smelter and Refinery in Indonesia was completed in the end of August, 1998 and it was put into the integrated test operation in December, 1998. Gresik Smelter and Refinery is designed to produce 200,000 tpy of copper cathode from copper concentrate supplied from Grasberg Mine of PT. Freeport Indonesia Company in Irian Jaya, Indonesia. As by product 592,000 tpy of sulfuric acid, 382,000 tpy of slag, 31,000 tpy of gypsum and 480 tpy of slime will be produced in the full operation. The enlarged Mitsubishi process in Naoshima has been in steady operation since. May 1991. However, the sulfuric acid plants have been in operation for more than 30 years. The acid plants were modernized between 1999 and 2001 by renewing some of main equipment such as the drying tower and gas heat exchangers, and introducing new technology. At the same time, as an electric energy saving measure, the electric power consumption in the sulfuric acid plant was vastly improved by decreasing the volume of gas treated the installation of low temperature activity catalyst in the 1st pass of the converter and optimization of main gas blower runner. Furthermore, last year, the oxygen plant was replaced and enlarged, and anode production increased from 240,000 to 280,000 tonnes per year with an associated increase of sulfuric acid from 550,000 to 660,000 tonnes per year. This paper describes these recent improvements in the acid plant at Naoshima smelter.

The global copper industry faces a technological challenge to develop processing schemes for more complex and impure ores and concentrates. Group 15 elements (As, Sb, and Bi) represent impurities that are troublesome both in terms of environmental impact and metallurgical processing. The so-call "dirty" copper concentrates are either unacceptable for smelting and refining or incur high penalties. The behavior of the Group 15 elements is of critical importance in maintaining product quality and process performance. During copper electrorefining, these impurities are released to the electrolyte by electrochemical dissolution of the anode. Depending mainly on temperature, concentration, and oxidation state these elements can spontaneously coprecipitate from the electrolyte. Some of these precipitates are referred to as floating slimes and their formation can have extremely detrimental effects on cathode purity. In this paper, the mechanism of floating slimes formation will be discussed and the fundamental thermochemistry will be reviewed and analyzed in relation to solubility properties.

Most recent developments made in the Gintsvetmet Institute in the field of technologies and equipment for single-stage autogenous smelting of copper sulfide raw materials to produce white metal and blister copper on the basis of oxygen-flame smelting process and separation of highly basic calcium-containing slags have been discussed. This technology includes the oxygen-flame smelting process (KFP Process) to produce highly basic self-disintegrating ferrite-calcium slags with their subsequent flotation to recover copper and a basically new sparging smelting process (FBP Process) to produce combined slags subjected to decopperizing inside the same furnace. Results of special investigations of the slag structure obtained in the KFP and FBP processes and substantiating selection of their chemical and phase composition have been presented. It has been demonstrated that the above processes meet the stringent world-level requirements to advanced technologies with respect to energy conservation and environmental safety with different scales of production and within a wide range of specific conditions of particular operations.

Thiocyanate was evaluated for gold recovery from low-grade refractory gold ores following biooxidation for an acidic heap leaching approach. One of the important features in using thiocyanate is that the leaching can be performed in acidic media, thus avoiding problems related to neutralization and material handling as leaching with alkaline cyanide. Also, the acidic leaching enables the use of ferric ion or bioleach solution as oxidants. In this study, Newmont-Nevada low-grade refractory sulfidic ore was biooxidized in columns at a particle size of 100% passing 102 mm. Thiocyanate leach on the biooxidized ore sample was performed on both ground samples in pulps and coarse material in columns using ferric ion as an oxidant. The variables of thiocyanate and ferric ion concentrations were compared for effect on leaching. Thiocyanate leach results are encouraging and indicate potential for development of a practical process. Gold extractions by thiocyanate are comparable to cyanide leach. Thiocyanate consumption was higher than cyanide, but was in an acceptable level.

Low temperature X-ray diffraction and thermal property studies of the solid-solid state phase transition for the polyalcohols (pentaerythritol (PE), pentaglycerine (PG) and neopentylglycol (NPG)) thermal energy storage solid solutions have been investigated by using X-ray diffractometry and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) methods. X-ray diffraction studies on polyalcohols solid solutions, PE-NPG and PG-NPG, are from ?10oC to 50oC. XRD results shows the + mixed phase at the related low temperature (?10oC) for both PE-NPG and PG-NPG solid solutions. At high temperature range, XRD results show phase for PG-NPG solid solution and + mixed phase for PE-NPG solid solution. There are only two Bragg peaks, (111) and (200), shown in phase XRD patterns. The polyalcohols solid solutions have been cycled 5 times between -20oC to 100oC at different DSC scan rates to study the phase transition properties. DSC results of both PE-NPG and PG-NPG solid solutions show that the solid-solid state phase transition is near room temperature. One of the key factors of stabilized blast furnace operation under the conditions of high productivity and high pulverized coal rate is to enlarge the raceway to reduce the dead man area. With a reduced dead man area, the descent area is enlarged and the central gas flow is maintained at the same time. In this study, raceway furnace experiments were conducted with tuyere velocity and coke strength changed both in hot and cold conditions to measure the coke degradation rate. Using the coke degradation rate measurements, we examined the equivalent relation between the coke strength and tuyere velocity for coke degradation in the raceway. In addition, in this paper, we discuss the increase in tuyere velocity in relation to an increase in coke strength.

Ongoing operations at the Cyprus Miami Smelter involve the use of an electric furnace for settling of copper matte from discard slag. Proper operation of the electric settling furnace is a major factor in minimizing losses of copper to the discard slag. Recent test work at the smelter has shown improvement in the operation of the electric furnace with a subsequent improvement with regard to the copper losses. This paper presents a general discussion of the Cyprus Miami Smelter operation, past results with respect to copper losses, recent operational changes and test work, and the subsequent results.

Cleanness of steel is justified, measured and estimated in steelmaking process through different concepts which are mainly based on operational, empirical or semiempirical parameters and describe ?cleanness as a state?. In this work a theoretical concept is developed, considering ?cleanness as a process? and introducing a dynamic aspect into the quantification of cleanness of a steel melt, linking operational parameters with physicochemical variables, which are based on first principles. This concept and the here derived and developed variables and parameters are based on the earlier defined agglomeration index (AI) of a steel melt, the ratio of the mean inclusions diameter (MID) to the mean inter-particle distance (MIPD), which is shown to be a measure of the agglomeration tendency of the melt after deoxidation, and can serve both, to monitoring cleanness during steelmaking operation and to be useful as a basis for mathematical modelling of cleanness and of the metallurgical measures in plant, associated with production of clean steels.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines recently identified a significant new source of scandium in an Oklahoma tantalum waste residue (approximately 0.24 pct Sc). Because scandium is a strategic and critical metal which the Department of Defense has classified for special consideration, the Bureau is researching methods of recovering scandium and associated metals from this and other process residues. A variety of operating parameters were evaluated to determine the best technique for recovering scandium. Testing showed that by sulfating the residue at temperatures as low as 150' C for reaction times as short as 0.5 hr, over 94 pct of the scandium converted to a water soluble form. Solvent extraction using DEHPA selectively recovered 100 pct of the scandium from the water leach solution.

The distributions of impurities in the copper melt, the slag and the gas phase in copper flash smelting process were under study in the Guixi smelter, particularly during operating conditions of high oxygen enrichment with production of high grade matte. Several methods for the removal of impurities such as As, Sb and Bi in the copper smelting process were developed and implemented at the Guixi smelter. This paper described the effects of high oxygen enrichment, elevated matte grade, high temperature and high production rate on the distribution of impurities, methods adopted at the smelter for the removal of impurities, and the associated benefits in the utilization of these removal techniques which include the mathematical model for material blending, high thermal intensity operation at the flash furnace, extended converter blowing, and injection of slag modifiers consisting of Na2CO3 and CaO powder mixture to the converters and anode furnaces.

"India’s present annual marine fish catch is 2.9 million tonnes and its low value fishes such as sardines, sciaenids, goat fishes and leiognathids amount to 60%. The fish meal obtained from these resources is mainly used presently as an ingredient in live stock and aquaculture feeds. These fishes offer vast scope in the production of pet foods. Pet foods prepared with leiognathid fish meal (60%), maize flour (10%), wheat flour (5%), vitamin and mineral mixture (5%) and water (20%) and experimented with 50 cats and 50 dogs were found to be ideal. Depending on protein level, feeds are being formulated for experimenting with more number of pet animals. Environmental problem is the major concern for any industry and there is a great need to that along green lines. Sangam Dairy being one of the most famous and wide spread Dairies in India, produces wide spectrum of milk products. The BOD levels of effluent water of this industry with MIF treatment were found to be around 100 ppm. Lot of research has been expended in the past to bring down the BOD levels to bare minimum. The main objective of the present study is to minimize the BOD level to the required level stipulated by environmental standards by employing various seeding materials. For this purpose microbes like Bacillus Subtiles, Pseudomonas, Aspergillas, Staphylococcus, and Pencilium have been employed and BOD levels were analyzed. Various Reagents, solutions with different dilution levels have been successfully prepared. Initial and final Dissolved Oxygen levels were determined before and after incubation. From the DO data, BOD was evaluated for all samples and comparison analysis of various seeding material was carried to suggest the efficient seeding material for the ETP plant. In the process, solutions of different dilutions have been prepared using difficult reagents. These samples are treated with above mentioned microbes and BOD levels are estimated. It has been observed that staphylococcus and Pseudomonas proved to be the best seeding materials. When there microbes have employed BOD levels fall to less than 10 and 20 ppm respectively
