The Uetliberg Tunnel in Switzerland is the longest tunnel in Zurich?s new Western Bypass Expressway, connecting the Birmensdorf bypass in the west with the existing Zurich-Chur national motorway in the east. Thus the tunnel links the Zurich-West motorway interchange with the Zurich-South interchange (shown in Figure 1). The Uetliberg Tunnel project comprises two parallel tubes, each about 4.4 km long. The two tunnel tubes are connected every 300 m by a transverse walkway and every 900 m by a transverse roadway (Figure 2). The SOS niches are spaced 150 m apart. Portal stations with machinery rooms are located at the west and east portals. The tunnel falls with a gradient of 1.6% from the west portal at Wannenboden to the east portal at Gänziloo. The Project costs are about CHF 1.12 billion. The carcass construction started in March 2001. The Opening of the Uetliberg Tunnel is planed in spring 2009.

In 2010, the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) began holding hearings on a new coal mine respirable dust rule, which proposed a 1.0 mg/m3 standard, a separate 0.1 mg/m3 quartz standard, and the use of single-shift samples for compliance. Small mines largely comprise the “hot spots” where dust diseases of the lungs increased dramatically over the past decade. This paper presents findings on the feasibility of small mines’ compliance with the proposed new 1.0 mg/m3 standard. It gives probabilities of noncompliance by MSHA district, average mining height and selected “hot spot” counties. Because silicosis and respirable quartz dust appear to be the primary issues related to a recent doubling of the prevalence of dust diseases of the lungs, multiple regression models for prediction of the average total quartz content of compliance samples are given. These findings have significant implications for the need for better dust control methods.

In mid-April 1992, MINING ENGINEERING mailed a survey questionnaire relating to mining shovels and hydraulic excavators to 125 SME members working at surface mines or at the headquarters of companies that operate surface mines. The mailing was directed to individuals whose titles indicate that they have management or mine planning responsibilities for surface mining operations. A total of 56 usable surveys returned by June 17 are the basis of this report. Precious metals mines Eighteen precious metals mines or mining companies returned completed surveys in time to be included in this report. Of these, 14 use hydraulic shovels only for both ore and waste, I uses both hydraulic and rope shovels, and 2 use Caterpillar 988 front-end loaders for both ore and waste. (Of the latter 2, neither expects to be in the market for a shovel in the next three years. I of these 2 placed Harnischfeger P&H number one and O&K number two in response to the question, "Based on your current knowledge of their machines, which manufacturer would you likely chose to supply new shovels or excavators to a mine or mines operating under your responsibility, if you were in the market?") Another uses front-end loaders, make not designated. The latter does not expect to be in the market for mining shovels or excavators within the next three years. Of the final total of 14 precious metals mines using only hydraulic excavators to load ore and waste, 8 use Hitachi excavators only, 1 uses Demag excavators only, 1 uses Liebherr excavators only, 1 uses O&K excavators only, 1 uses Harnischfeger P&H and O&K excavators, 1 uses Harnischfeger P&H and Hitachi excavators, and 1 uses Hitachi and Demag excavators. Of the 14 precious metals mines using only hydraulic excavators, 7 use excavators in the 7.6 to 11.5 m; (10 to 15 cu yd) size range. Of these 7, 5 use only excavators in this size range, and they are used to load both ore and waste. 1 of the 7 also uses 11.5 to 17 m' (15 to 22 cu yd) excavators, and I also uses a 17 to 23 m3 (22 to 30 cu yd) excavator. Of the 7 remaining of these 14 precious metals mines that use only hydraulic excavators, 3 use 11.5 to 17 m' (15 to 22 cu yd), 2 use 17 to 23 m3 (22 to 30 cu yd), and 2 use less than 7.6 m' (10 cu yd) units.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION Since the beginning of operations, with the exception of a small tonnage mined by slushing, ore extraction has been by full gravity caving. Formerly, a checkerboard sequence of block undercutting was followed with the even-numbered blocks in one panel and the odd¬numbered blocks in the adjacent panel being mined. As these blocks were depleted, the intermediate or pillar blocks were mined (Fig. 1). Following this checker¬board, the mining sequence went through a number of changes, finally evolving into diagonal retreat panel cav¬ing by blocks (Fig. 2). The numbers in Fig. 2 indicate the sequence in which blocks were undercut. Gaps in the numbering sequence indicate undercutting on the level outside the illustrated area. Geology The ore body is a low-grade deposit of chalcopyrite mineralization disseminated throughout structurally weak, highly fractured, strongly altered granitic host rocks. It takes the shape of a gently dipping elliptical cylinder consisting of an ore shell of variable thickness surrounding an interior waste core. Major and minor axes of the mineralized cylinder are 1524 m (5000 ft) and 762 m (2500 ft), respectively, and length approximates 2438 m (8000 ft). Ore is sufficiently fractured to break readily into medium-coarse size. The igneous rock complex containing the ore body is covered by a wedge-shaped blanket of Tertiary con¬glomerate which was brought into place by faulting along the major regional structure of the San Manuel fault. Thickness of the conglomerate cap varies from only 9 m (30 ft) at the east end of the ore body to more than 610 m (2000 ft) at the west. Structurally, the con¬glomerate is much more competent than the igneous host rocks and, when caving, it breaks into massive chunks. Conglomerate boulders seen in drawpoints underground are very coarse. The total rock column over the initial mining area of the 1415 grizzly level was 354 m (1160 ft) of which 122 m (400 ft) was ore, 79 m (260 ft) was leached igneous capping, and 152 m (500 ft) was conglomerate above the San Manuel fault. Diamond Drilling: From 4572 to 7620 m (15,000 to 25,000 ft) are drilled annually from underground workings to delineate the ore body. MINE DEVELOPMENT Haulage Level In the south or main ore body (see Figs. 3-6), with the exception of the draw and transfer raises, all the extraction openings are concreted (Seaney and Tobie, 1965). The haulage panel drifts, which are 18 m (60 ft) below the grizzly drifts, are first driven with pre¬concrete ground support. The drift, which has an arched section, then is concreted using mobile collapsible steel tunnel forms. The haulage drifts leading from the pan¬els to the hoisting shafts are not concreted. After the panel drifts have been concreted, the raise stations from which transfer raises will be driven are constructed and the raise-station ore-drawing chute is installed. The chute is prefabricated of A-36 steel with undercut guillo¬tine gates made of abrasion-resistant 2.5-cm (1-in.) steel plate powered by 20-cm (8-in.) air cylinder installed on each side of the raise station. Transfer Raises The transfer raises are lined with 15 x 20-cm (6 x 8-in.) cribbing and are 1.22 m (4 ft) in the clear. Each cribbing is protected from wear by a high carbon steel angle which is nailed onto the cribbing. The transfer raises are driven from each side of the raise station on an angle of 1.1 rad (63°). Each raise con¬sists of a main and a backover branch. The transfer¬raise driving crew consists of two men working one shift only. Grizzly Drifts After the transfer raise reaches the grizzly level, the grizzly drift can be driven. The grizzly drifts are spaced at 10.6-m (35-ft) centers and are driven parallel to the long axis of the ore body (see Fig. 2). This drift is driven by a two-man crew working on one or more drifts at a time using feed-leg machines. The eight grizzlies in the 42.7-m (140-ft) long drift are spaced at 5.3-m

"The Cityringen project in Copenhagen, Denmark will form a new circular line in the city center and will consist of 21 new stations (17 + four transfer stations) and approximately 31 km (19 miles) of earth pressure balance (EPB) twin-bored tunnels.The new tunnels passed under the historical building of Magasin du Nord, McDonald’s and two pubs in the heart of the city with a minimum cover of about 4 m (13 ft).To minimize the movements, a complex system of compensation grouting and jet grouting soil treatment was performed. A detailed action plan between the parties involved allowed coping with the critical tunnel boring machine’s (TBM) successful passage.The Cityringen is an extension of the existing metro line underground Copenhagen and will include the City Circle Line, 15 km (9.5 miles) of twin tunnels looping around the city. The City Circle Line will form a new circular track inside the city center and will intersect the existing M1 and M2 lines at Kongens Nytorv and Frederiksberg stations, as well as suburban train services at København H, Østerport and Nørrebro. It will extend the Metro network to the Nørrebro, Østerbro areas and the central station at København H (Fig.1). The two new lines M3 and M4 will run on the same tracks, but the M3 will be a circle route running around the entire line, whereas the M4 will drive from the station to the north side of the city.The €1.5 billion design-build contract was awarded by Metroselskabet in January 2011 to the Copenhagen Metro Team (CMT), a joint venture (JV) between the Italian companies Salini, Tecnimont Civil construction and Seli SpA. Since the bankruptcy of Seli SpA and Tecnimont, Salini Impregilo now owns 100 percent of the JV shares. Seli Tunneling Denmark ApS, a subcontractor to CMT, was initially constituted as a Seli SpA subsidiary and, following the economic difficulties of Seli SpA, was acquired in 2015 by Salini Impregilo. Seli Denmark is in charge of the tunnels excavation and lining and owns the four 5.84-m (19-ft) diameter Seli/Kawasaki earth pressure balance machines."

The FMC Westvaco Trona Mine is located near Green River, Wyoming and has an annual production of 4.5M tons. Trona is an evaporite mineral that is processed into several products, mostly soda ash. The underground mine has two active development panels and one longwall (LW) panel. The mining horizon is about 500m below surface and the surrounding strata liberates methane. Three surface-based, blowing fans provide ventilation air as a positive pressure system. The mine operates a 225m long LW face, built by Joy Mining Machinery. Headgate and Tailgate developments are driven with four entries. The recovery room, at the end of each panel, is 8m wide with three access chutes. Additional recovery room support comes for concrete blocks used with a center to center spacing of 1.5m. As the LW enters this pre-driven recovery room there are notable responses and shifting ground stresses. This study was undertaken to measure the ground response using seven vibrating wire displacement transducers. These devices were used to monitor the convergence as the LW approached the recovery room. The methane concentration in the air ventilating the recovery room was also monitored. The correlation between convergence and gas liberation was then studied. The results show that the convergence varies from 0.1m to 0.25m along the length of the recovery room. Ventilating the recovery room becomes critical as methane is liberated from oil shale as the more plastic floor material is disrupted. Appropriate methods are employed to ventilate the recovery room.

Bond International Gold's Colosseum gold mine was discovered in 1865. No recorded production occurred, however, until the 1930s, with production of about 19 kg (615 oz) of gold. The mine was closed in 1942 as a nonessential industry during World War II. The property was acquired by Dallhold Resources in mid-1986. Construction of a 1.1-million Mt (1.2-million st), carbon-in-pulp (CIP), cyanide mill began in November 1986 and was completed in September 1987. Minable reserves are estimated to be 9.5 Mt (10.5 million st), with an average grade of 2.1 g/t (0.061 oz per st). This article describes the general process flow and plant equipment. And it looks at the maintenance and operational problems encountered in the first six months of operation. Process description Ore is direct hauled from the open-pit mine 1.5 km (1 mile) to the crushing facility. There it is crushed to -152 mm (-6 in.) with a single- stage, 1.5-m x 1.2-m (60-in. x 48-in.), 186.5-kW (250-hp), Fuller-Traylor jaw crusher. The ore is then stockpiled in a 31.7-kt (35,000-st) reclaim ore pile. Lime is added to the crushed product as it is conveyed to a single 6.4-m x 4-m (21-ft x 13-ft), Hardinge semiautogenous grinding (SAG) mill, followed by a single 4.3-m x 7.3-m (14-ft x 24-ft) Hardinge overflow ball mill. After grinding, the slurry is thickened and then preaereated for three hours. Following preaereation, the pulp is leached with NaCN at a pH of 11, also for three hours. The slurry then goes through a seven-stage CIP circuit for 21 hours. Then the tailings slurry is preaereated for three hours before cyanide destruction using the Inco process. Loaded carbon is eluted using an Anglo American strip, followed by electrowinning on stainless steel wire. The stainless steel wire is transferred to refinery cells where the gold and silver is plated on stainless steel plates. Following electrore-fining, the gold-silver foil is removed, melted, and poured into dore bars for shipment. The crushing, milling, refining, and maintenance processes require 37 people. Crushing The crushing area required changes and modifications following start-up. Several areas are of specific note. Structural failures Rubber support cushion blocks located under the coarse ore bin failed. These were replaced with heavier, more durable blocks and have since appeared to be satisfactory. A severe structural vibration was encountered in the entire crushing facility. A mechanical engineer, brought in by the contractor, determined the structure needed more support and cross-bracing.

The Blue Ridge Low Level Outlet (LLO) was a design/build contract to provide a secondary means of discharging water from the Blue Ridge Reservoir. The project involved driving a 3.25 m (11 ft) modified horseshoe tunnel by 293.5 m (963 ft) long utilizing conventional drill and blast methodology. The intake shaft and structure were constructed inside of a sheet pile cofferdam surrounded by a maximum of 20.1 m (66 ft) of water. The shaft was excavated 4.87 m(16 ft) diameter to a depth of 12.8 m (42 ft) below the tremie slab elevation. Steel lining, including a transition from 3.66 m to 2.74 m (12 to 9 ft) diameter and a90 degree elbow were installed in the inlet shaft and then backfilled with concrete. This paper will describe the RFP phase, the design phase, challenges of the underground construction and contractual challenges.

"GENERAL PROJECT DATAThe Sparvo Tunnel is part of the “Variante di Valico” project, a new 65km (40mi) highway link between Bologna and Florence, designed to renew the existing A1 route which connects Bologna and Florence. It is composed of 2 x 2,5km (1,55mi) twin tunnels excavated inside a complex geological context, characterized by the presence of a series of surface landslides and methane gas.The inclination is 2,6 % and the minimum radius is 1.400m (4.600ft). The two tunnel tubes were excavated by a 15,6m (51ft) diameter EPB-TBM from summer 2011 to summer 2013. The internal diameter of the concrete lining is 13,6m (44,5ft), made up of precast concrete segments 2m (6,5ft) long and 70cm (28”) thick, being the largest and heaviest segments ever produced. Excavation went smooth apart from initial problems concerning clogging problems and a main bearing damage of the TBM, which are discussed in a further paper during the congress. No structural damage was observed until the end of the TBM drives.SITE OBSERVATIONS DURING THE POST-EXCAVATION PHASEThe first evidence of the stress state of the segmental lining appeared on November 20, 2013 inside the northern tube (1st drive). Ring No. 884 showed obvious signs of overstress, resulting in spalling and crushing of the concrete, and the subsequent bending of the reinforcement, as visible in figure 1.At this time the tunnel invert was already partially backfilled, and construction traffic was running through the tunnel. First safety measures included closing of the tunnel, and initial measurements of the displacements."

Introduction The US Bureau of Mines has designed and evaluated total mill ventilation systems (TMVS) at two mineral-processing operations. Both systems have proven proficient at cost-effectively reducing respirable dust levels throughout the mills. An 11.8-m3/sec (25,000-cfm) system installed at a clay-processing mill provided about 10 air changes per hour (acph). This system reduced respirable dust concentrations by about 40% throughout the mill building. The second evaluation was performed at a silica sand operation. Tests were performed with 23.6 and 47.2 m3/sec (50,000 and 100,000 cfm) of ventilation to the mill building, corresponding to 17 and 34 acph. Average millwide respirable dust reductions were 36% and 64%, respectively. This work was done to determine general guidelines and design criteria for operations that may be interested in implementing TMVS. TMVS should be designed to draw clean make-up air in near the base of the mill. This air provides general purging and may clear some dust-laden areas throughout the mill structure. It is discharged at or near the top of the structure. Without the TMVS, dust can exit the building through open doors, windows, etc. and contaminate outside plant workers. This dust can also be recirculated back into the mill building causing additional contamination problems. TMVS is not a stand-alone system. It is a supplemental technique to assist other localized dust control systems (Mody et al., 1987). Testing Total mill ventilation systems were evaluated at two processing operations. For both tests, the primary goal was to determine the reduction in respirable dust throughout the structure. Test site No. 1. The first evaluation was performed at a clay-crushing and screening mill in New York. The mill's base dimensions were 39.6 x 9.8 m (130 x 32 ft), giving a volumetric capacity of 4250 m3 (150,000 cu ft). The TMVS was designed to provide 12 m3/sec (25,430 cfm) of ventilation air to the mill, representing about 10 acph. This was accomplished by three 4 m3/sec (8475 cfm) roof-powered exhaustors that were evenly spaced across the roof. Three wall louvers provided inlets for make-up air at the mill's base. Two evaluations were performed at this mill. The first occurred for two days in December when outside air temperatures ranged from -12.2° to 4.4° C (10° to 40° F). Temperatures with the wind chill factor dropped as low as -34° to -40° C (-29 to -40° F) during the early morning. The second evaluation was in April when outside air temperatures ranged between 10° to 26.7° C (50° to 80° F). These two evaluations verified the effectiveness of TMVS in lowering respirable-dust concentrations throughout the mill. Gravimetric-sampler respirable-dust concentrations in December ranged from 0.22 to 2.39 mg/m3 under normal conditions, compared to 0.13 to 1.55 mg/m3 with TMVS. In April, respirable dust concentrations ranged from 0.29 to 4.84 mg/m3 under normal conditions compared to 0.21 to 2.37 mg/m3 with the system on. TMVS also increased visibility throughout the mill building. Dust reductions for gravimetric and RAM-I instruments are listed in Table 1. Each value was determined by comparing the average concentration for the entire day of testing for normal and TMVS values. The mean/standard deviation values for gravimetric and RAM-1 results were 42.5/17.6 and 37.1/16.8, respectively.

INTRODUCTION This contract is the most northerly portion of the Metropolitan Sanitary District of Greater Chicago's Tunnel and Reservoir Plan. (TARP) The project begins at Addison Street in Chicago and proceeds northerly approximately ten miles to end at Wilmette Harbor and Lake Michigan. The project which consists of 2 work shafts, 32 drop shafts, 7.322 km (24,020 ft.) of 6.7 m (22 ft.) diameter circular rock tunnel, 8.458 km (27,750 ft.) of 9.2 m (30 ft.) diameter circular rock tunnel and miscellaneous rock bolting and grouting, was bid for a total cost of $63,140,480. The tunnel invert elevation varies from 65.5 m (215 ft.) to 77.4 m (254 ft.) below the ground surface, which places the tunnel in a rock formation of dolomite limestone. At the tunnel invert, the unconfined compressive strength of the limestone varies from 96 MPa (14,000 psi) to 152 MPa (22,000 psi). The 6.7 (22 ft.) diameter tunnel required the mining of 10.9 cu m. (14.2 cu yd.) of rock per lineal foot of tunnel while the 9.2 m (30 ft.) diameter tunnel required the mining of 20.1 cu m (26.3 cu yd.) of rock per lineal foot of tunnel. The total cubic meters of rock required to be excavated from both tunnels was 818,821 cu m (1,070,978 cu yd.). All of this will be mined by tunnel boring machines (TBM). These tunnels were not to be lined with concrete. The thirty two drop shafts have upper portions that are cylindrical in the overburden and rock sections. The Gualcamayo Mine is located in the Andes Mountains north of San Juan, Argentina (Figure 1). A property of Yamana Gold Inc, it declared commercial production in July 2009 and has a total mineral reserve and resource base of approximately 88,000 kg of gold. Crushing operations for the open-pit mine are located in a 13,500 m3 underground cavern with a ceiling height of 22 m. More than 3,600 m of tunnels are used to access the cavern and convey the ore. The Project as described in this paper relates to the design and construction of the Main Cavern, Conveyor System Exit Tunnel, the Mechanical System Access Tunnels, and two 4.20 m diameter shafts (Ore Pass #1 and Ore Pass #2) as shown in Figure 2. [ ] Preliminary engineering for the Project was performed by Hatch Chile. Rizzo Associates Argentina, S.A., a division of Paul C. Rizzo Associates, Inc (Rizzo) was contracted to provide geomechanical and geotechnical support for the construction of the access tunnel system and geomechanical design and construction supervision for the cavern and shafts.

Kushk lead-zinc mine is located in central part of IRAN. The mine is owned by Bafgh Mines Co., which is a nationalized company. Exploration results show that ore occurs in the area that extends for 800m length and 180m depth. The approved, probable and possible reserves of the mine is 900,000 tons, 1,120,000, tons and 1,450,000 tons respectively with average grade of 17.7% zinc and 4.3% lead. The total annual output of the mine all was by underground mining, is in the order of 100. 000 tons. The main entry to the mine is via an inclined shaft with a cross-sectional arp of 8 m2, length of 263m which dips at 20°. The ore is mined mostly by sublevel stopinq method. The major difficulty in ventilating the mine was that related to spontaneous combustion of pyrite, which was more serious in some parts of the mine than others. In order to reduce this risk, a new ventilation system for the mine was designed, using 4 exhusting fans.

GEOLOGICAL NOTES The area under discussion is situated approximately 150 m north of Loraine No. 3 shaft at ± 1500 m below surface. The block being mined extends from about halfway between 50 and 52 levels to just below 48 level (see Fig. 1). The EB reefs form the lower portion of the EB zone of the Elsburg series and in the 81 line area the various conglomerate bands show the best development. Up to 18 separate reef bands are developed and the distance from the bottom conglomerate band to the top is ± 26 m. The thickness of the quartzite which forms the middling between the various reef bands varies from 0.1 to 2 m. The strike is roughly north-¬south. The reef bands are payable individually. However, owing to the steepness of the reefs and their close prox¬imity, conventional mining would prove very difficult. The nonpayable reef bands all carry varying amounts of gold and the whole area is a massive payable reef body approximately 26 m wide and 60 m high at 300 to 400 m on strike. The major structure of the area consists of a north¬-south trending syncline. The western flank of the syncline has a steep easterly dip, in places approaching the vertical. This flank cuts out against the overlying rocks of the EA zone. The latter forms a noncon¬formity with the underlying EB zone. The eastern flank of the syncline dips to the west at an average dip of 0.17 rad (10°). The 0.1 rad (6°) north-plunging syncline was sub¬jected to severe faulting. The most important are the Nos. 4 and 10 faults, both of which have a roughly north-south strike. The No. 4 fault dips to the west at an angle of 1.04 rad (60°) with a downthrow of approximately 150 m to the west. The dip of the No. 10 fault is 0.69 to 0.81 rad (40° to 50°) west, with the western block having moved 150 m updip relative to the eastern block. The EB reefs are being mined by the sublevel stoping method down from the sub-outcrop position to the cutoff against the No. 4 fault. On the downthrow side of the No. 10 fault, that is just above the 54 level, two reef bands are payable and will be mined conven¬tionally. ROCK MECHANICS From the section in Fig. 1, it can be seen that the area under consideration is surrounded by stoped-out areas. This will naturally change the stress distribution extensively. The only way to calculate the stress field for such a geometry is to use the finite element method. It was established that this method worked for the present geometry and so the method was applied to predict the stress behavior of the final geometry. From the results, it appeared that the effect of the old stopes was to destress the area. There are, however, some areas-such as the 50 and 48 north footwall haulages-which will require continuous attention. The integrated grouting method, as developed in the USSR, can be applied to multi-purpose operations that in¬clude the construction of shafts, drifts, and tunnels. In the USSR it has been used extensively for primary and final grouting of underground excavations in mining engineering and civil engineering projects. It has been applied in projects where the primary objective was waste contain¬ment. It has also been used to control subsidence beneath buildings located over mined out openings and to eliminate the flow of ground water beneath and around dams. This chapter considers several industrial applications in the form of case histories. The word integrated means that grouting activities were integrated with other activities. 9.1 CASE HISTORIES OF GROUTING FRACTURED ROCK WHEN SINKING VERTICAL SHAFTS The integrated grouting method has been applied most widely in the sinking of vertical shafts in fractured, satu¬rated rock. As explained previously herein, grouting oper¬ations preferably are carried out from the ground surface where they are integrated into the schedule of the setting up of the shaft excavation and construction equipment. Such integration reduces significantly the length of time required for preparation of shaft construction and the time required to sink the shaft. The increased efficiency is achieved by the elimination of cementing operations from the working face upon the penetration of each aquifer. Concomitantly, labor and energy consumption during shaft sinking are minimized because the more complicated and labor-intensive work is carried out at the surface section. Table 9.1 presents the essential parameters for the pri¬mary grouting of saturated fractured rock carried out by the integrated method when sinking vertical shafts. 9.1.1 NAGOL'CHANSK MINE NO. 1-2, VENTILATION SHAFT NO. 1 The integrated method of grouting saturated fractured rock through holes drilled from the surface was employed for the first time during the sinking of vertical shaft No. 1 at the Nagol'chansk mine No. 1-2 in the Don Basin. The shaft had an inside diameter of 6 m. The grouting operations commenced by using cement grout with a density of 1.7 to 1.8 g/cm3. Clay-based grout with cement and other addi¬tives was used only for grouting the aquifers where cement grout proved to be ineffective. By the time of the grouting of ventilation shaft No. 1, hydrodynamic analytical methods were well in hand and a preliminary method for designing isolation curtains had been developed. A method for designing and drilling ori¬ented directional drillholes whose natural curvature re¬flected the characteristics of the fracturing had been devel¬oped. The majority of the necessary equipment had been developed. Clay-based grouts were considered ready for the first industrial application. The hydrogeologic environment at the Nagol'chansk mine No. 1-2 contained many prolific aquifers. According to monitored drillhole data, the total expected inflow into ventilation shaft No. 1 without grouting was 425 m3/hr. This large ground water inflow rate was supported by in¬formation obtained during the sinking of the main shaft and from the auxiliary shaft of the "Nagol'chansk" mine No. 1-2. The construction contractor at the site began sinking ventilation shaft No. 1 to a depth of 217 m by cement grouting from the working face of the shaft. As a result of the cement grouting operations, the inflow of water was reduced from 105.4 to 40 m3/hr over this 217 m interval. However the residual inflow rate caused the shaft to become functional at the depth of 217 m. At this point all grouting operations were transferred to SPETSTAMPONAZHGEOLOGIA (STG) in an effort to improve the operation. In order to carry out preliminary grouting from the sur¬face, seven drillholes were installed and designed for re¬ceiving grout. Drilling was implemented by the ZIF-1200A rig to the design depth of the shaft. The geometry of the principal fracture system that would be encountered by the shaft was estimated while breaking ground using informa¬tion from other shafts. The drillholes were arranged so that they cut through the aquifers uniformly around the shaft. Some preference was given to intercepting the aquifers that were located along the rock dip above the shaft bottom because it was established that the ground water in the aqui¬fers flowed downward along the dip into the cone of de¬pression of the shaft. Investigations in the drillholes using the DAU-3M flowmeter described in Chapter 3 showed that all of the nine aquifers were penetrated by the time a depth of 690 m had been reached. The flowmetric information showed that aquifer numbers [1 and 2], [4, 5, and 6], and [7 and 8] had practically identical hydrogeologic characteristics; so it was decided to connect them into combined stopes and inject the grout using five stopes instead of nine. Table 9.2 shows the results of the grout injection into the aquifers. The volume of grout pumped into the separate intervals through single holes varied from 204 to 15 m3. Early experiences The first double shield hard rock tunnel boring machine, manufactured in 1973, belonged to the generation of machines that were equipped with 12" dia. cutters. The experiences made with the 4.3 m diameter prototype ROBBINS mod 144-151 have been reported at the 1976 R.E.T.C. of Las Vegas (1): it might be worth recalling here that, with a specific cutter load not exceeding 10 to 12 metric ton and a 4.8 r.p.m. cutterhead speed, the average advance rate was of 350 meters per month of 21 working days with a peak production of 1,050 m of advance in 40 working days, in widely weathered and fractured granitic rocks of generally precarious stability, where a precast segmental lining was routinely installed as tunnel support. Over the 8.2 km of the Sila Tunnels, several badly crushed or sheared rock zones were bored through without major problems, even with water inflows of up to 30 1/sec. The same machine, with an improved design of the telescopic-and-floating shield area and equipped with flameproof drive motors, was taken to Colombia where, from September, 1979 to March, 1982 it drove 7.5 km of the Rio Negro-Chivor Tunnel in competent siliceous shales of up to 130 MPa at an average rate of 20 m/day.

A recent analysis of 145 TBM tunnels of more than 1000km total length has helped to quantify the time dependence of utilization (U). In fact U = Tm, where T is time in hours and m is a negative gradient of deceleration. In poor quality ground, gradient m has a strong dependence on rock mass quality Q, for example m ˜ -0.5when Q = 0.1. Good investigation is critical for ensuring faster TBM tunneling then drill-and-blasting, which tends not to slow down (in m/hr) as the tunnel length increases. Anew design model called QTBM allows more reliable prognoses be made, and occasionally will disqualify the TBM solution.

Islais Creek Contract E, a transport/storage tunnel in San Francisco, was visited on a fieldtrip during construction by delegates to the 1995 RETC. This paper is a follow-up to that fieldtrip. The project’s two tunnels are 3.7 m and 3.2 m finished diameter, 155 m and 77 m long, respectively. The contractor used 1,000 overlapping jet grout columns to pre-treat the weak Bay Mud along the tunnel alignments, then mined them with an open faced tunnel shield, eliminating the need for compressed air tunneling. This paper documents the jet grouting program and the tunneling operation used on the project.

The Pachuca-Real Del Monte district, Hidalgo, Mexico (Figure 1) has produced roughly 1,500,000,000 oz Ag., 6,000,000 oz Au. and minor Pb., Zn, and Cu from about 100,000,000 tons of ore since discovery early in the 16th century. Production has come from epithermal vein deposits that have been up to 8 km in length, 650 m in vertical extent and 45 m in width but which averaged 200-400 m in length and vertical extent and 2-4 m in width. Ore deposits occur through-out an area about 12 km E-W by 10 km N-S (Figure 2) and between the elevations of 2000 and 2800 m above sea level. The deposits occur as shoots in the veins and terminate laterally where the veins narrow, upward where the veins pinch out and downward where the veins decrease in silver con-tent to below the cut-off grade; the veins are known to extend 500 m below the bottoms of the ore bodies and probably extend to much greater depths. The district lies wholly within a mid-to-late Tertiary volcanic rock sequence that is made up principally of andesite and dacite lava flows and flow-breccias. Although the bottom of the sequence is not exposed in the district, stratigraphic constructions indicate the volcanic rocks to have an aggregate thickness of 2000 to 2500 m. Structurally, the area is characterized by gentil warping and normal faulting of the volcanic rocks. Pre-ore modifications to the volcanic rock sequence consisted mainly of faulting along west-trending, south-dipping normal faults and north-trending high-angle faults.

Quartz has been of interest in occupational health for years because it can cause silicosis after prolonged exposure. New OSHA regulations (Air Contaminant; Final Rule) list perlite as a nuisance dust. They conclude that perlite is nontoxic when air-borne total particulate concentrations are 15 mg/m3 or below and when quartz content is less than 1% crystalline silica. OSHA has established an 8-hour PEL of 15 mg/m TWA for total perlite dust containing less than 1% quartz. OSHA has established a 5 mg/m3 TWA PEL for respirable perlite. These limits will protect workers from significant risk of eye, skin, or other physical irritation. This regulation is based on a Group 2A classification as a probable carcinogen in humans, at the 0.1% crystalline silica level, by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC 1987a, b). IARC found sufficient evidence for carcinogenicity of crystalline silica in animals and limited evidence in humans. Perlite is not listed as a carcinogen by OSHA or the National Toxicology Program.
