A large-scale development in exploration and production of uranium ores in the Czech Republic was done in the 2nd half of the 20th century. Many uranium deposits were discovered in the territory of the Czech Republic. Over a period of 50 years approximately, 110 000 tons of uranium in concentrate were produced. Different mining methods were developed and used. One of the most considerable deposits in the Czech Republic is the site Hamr na Jezere ? Straz pod Ralskem where both mining methods ? the underground mining and the acidic in-situ leaching ? were used. The extensive production of uranium led to widespread environmental impacts and contamination of groundwaters. Over the period of ?chemical? leaching of uranium (ca. 32 years), a total of more than 4 million tons of sulphuric acid and other chemicals have been injected into the ground. Most of the products (approximately 99.5 %) of the acids reactions with the rocks are located in the Cenomanian aquifer. The contamination of Cenomanian aquifer covers an area larger than 27 km2. The influenced volume of groundwater is more than 380 million m3. The total amount of dissolved SO4 2- is about 3.6 million tons. Approximately 0.5 % of the contamination is located in the Turonian aquifer. After 1990, a large-scale environmental program was established and the Czech government decided to liquidate the ISL Mine and start the remediation in 1996. The remediation consists of contaminated groundwater pumping, removing of the contaminants and discharging or reinjection of treated water. The objectives of the remedial activities are the followings : to restore the aquifer to a condition guaranteeing continuing usability of Turonian water of Northern Bohemia Cretaceous, to decommission boreholes and surface installations and to incorporate the surface of leaching fields into the ecosystems taking into account regional systems of ecological stability and urban plans. Nowadays four main remedial technological installations for reaching of these aims are used - the ?Station for Acid Solutions Liquidation No. One?, the ?Mother liquor reprocessing? station, the ?Neutralization and Decontamination Station NDS 6? and the ?Neutralization and Decontamination Station NDS 10?. Total capacity of this complex is sufficient to reach the target values of remedial parameters in 2037. The remediation action consists of: pumping of residual solution to the surface, separating uranium from the solution and reprocessing contaminants into commercially usable or ecologically storable products. It is expected that the amount of withdrawn contaminants will vary from 80 000 to 120 000 tons per year. Total costs of all remediation activities are expected to be in excess of 1.5 billion EUR.

"The characterization of the failure process of induced fractures by hydraulic stimulation is fundamental to understanding the generation and evolution of the discrete fracture network within the reservoir. A more detailed analysis of the fracture mechanism can be a powerful tool for identifying fluid flow paths and proppant placement within the reservoir. For example, during the rupture process the energy release is partitioned into different physical processes for which the relative ratio is changed by the presence of fluids or rotations in the local stress field with relation to the frictional resistance in the fracture plane. Fractures occurring in the same host rock under the same stress conditions are expected to rupture similarly, independent of their size (self-similarity). Changes in the scaling relationships of fractures are indicative of a change in the failure process, host rock or in-situ stress. Correlation of failure process data with reservoir rock properties and the in-situ stress field will help identify regions within the reservoir with characteristic types of failures. Further correlation with hydrocarbon production data can be used to develop efficient treatment plans and production diagnostic tools.In this study we investigate the failure process of ~27,000 microseismic (M < -1) fractures induced during a hydraulic fracturing shale completion program in NE British Columbia, Canada by estimating static and dynamic source parameters, such as dynamic and static stress drop, radiated energy, seismic efficiency, moment tensor, fracture plane orientation, slip direction and rupture velocity. On average, the microseismic events have low radiated energy, low dynamic stress and low seismic efficiency, consistent with the obtained slow rupture velocities. Events fail in overshoot mode (slip weakening failure model), with fluids lubricating faults and decreasing friction resistance. Events occurring in deeper formations tend to have faster rupture velocities and are more efficient in radiating energy. Variations in rupture velocity tend to correlate with variation in depth, fault azimuth and elapsed time, reflecting a dominance of the local stress field over other factors.Further identification of spatial and temporal distribution of families of events with similar characteristic rupture behaviors, based on either rock formation, depth, source type, fracture plane orientation, stress drop, pad or proppant stage, may be used as a proxy for specific fracture network development and hydrocarbon production. This information may be used to determine reservoir properties, constrain reservoir geo-mechanical models with measured physical parameters, classify dynamic rupture processes for fracture models and improve fracture treatment designs. These will be the focus of future studies."

"The removal of iron asgoethite from the high iron bearing solutions generated in zinc hydrometallurgy using a strong airflow device was investigated. The influence of oxygen flow, copper ion concentration, temperature and reaction time on iron precipitation as goethite was studied. The optimum conditions were: oxygen flow 0.2-0.35m3/h, copper ion concentration 0.25-0.5g/L, temperature 80-90oC, zinc oxide powder neutralizing agent and a reaction time of5to 7hours. Under the optimal conditions, the Fe2+concentration was reduced to 0.025g/L after iron precipitation, and the goethite residue contained 38.7wt.%Fe. The SEM and XRD analyses showed that the iron was present as well formed FeOOH crystals in the iron residue, and the amount of iron sulphate was very low. Production practice shows that, when the average iron concentration in the feed solution was 11.61g/L and 4.08g/L after precipitation, the weight of iron removed was 1,439kg/day. When the average iron concentration in the feed solution was 14.51g/L and 2.73g/L after precipitation, the weight of iron removed was 2,454kg/day. This represents a ~70 percent increase in iron removal.INTRODUCTIONThe objective of iron removal is to produce a small volume of iron residue, and our industrial goethite process meets this requirement. The high Fe(II) solution in our reactor isoxidized/hydrolyzed to precipitate goethite and the precipitate is sent to a pyro metallurgical furnace for final residue treatment. Some literature discusses (DengYong-guiet al., 2008;Meiguang-guiet al., 2001;Zhongzhu-qianet al., 1980) research on iron hydrolysis; one of the reported rate limiting parameters was the low availability of the oxidant when using air and another was the inhomogeneous air distribution. There are two iron hydrolysis-goethite precipitation methods; the Electrolytic Zinc process (EZ) and the Vieille Montagne process (VM) (Lei Xiang, 2006; Xuguo-qiang, 2007;ZhaoYonget al.,2005). The EZ method hydrolyzes the Fe3+directly to FeOOH. The weakness of the EZ process is the low recovery rate of the associated minor metals. The VM method reduces the iron to the ferrous state and then oxidizes the Fe(II)to Fe(III),with simultaneous hydrolysis/precipitation of the Fe(III) as FeOOH. Before iron hydrolysis, the minor metals, such as indium, could be selectively precipitated, because Fe(II)requires a high pH for hydrolysis. A Deep Geologic Repository (DGR) for Low and Intermediate Level radioactive waste has been proposed by Ontario Power Generation for the Bruce Nuclear site in Ontario, Canada. The DGR is to be constructed at a depth of about 680m below ground surface within the argillaceous Ordovician limestone of the Cobourg Formation. The objective of this paper is to apply paleoclimate boundary conditions to a regional-scale groundwater flow model for the DGR site and to describe the influence of glacial loading and unloading on flow system evolution using the FRAC3DVS-OPG flow and transport model. The regional-scale domain encompasses an area of 18,775km2 extending from Lake Huron to Georgian Bay in southwestern Ontario, Canada. From a hydrogeologic perspective, the domain can be subdivided into a shallow zone, an intermediate zone, and a deep zone comprised of the low-permeability units of Ordovician and the more permeable Cambrian where present. The deep groundwater zone is characterized by units containing stagnant water having high concentrations of total dissolved solids (TDS) that can exceed 300g=L. The high TDS values at depth require density-dependent coupled flow and transport calculations within FRAC3DVS-OPG. The computational sequence involves the calculation of steady-state density independent flow that is used as the initial condition for the determination of pseudo-equilibrium for a density-dependent flow system that has an initial TDS distribution. The 1,000,000 year pseudo-equilibrium heads and brine concentrations are used as the initial condition for the paleoclimate simulations. Over the past 900,000 years, the Canadian Shield has experienced approximately nine episodes of complete glaciation. During the glaciation cycles, the entire Canadian land mass has been covered by a series of continental ice-sheets whose maximum thickness reached 4 km and whose southern extents reached, in some cases, beyond the present-day Canada-U.S. border. The glaciation phase of a single glaciation-deglaciation episode is typically 90,000 years in duration, while the deglaciation portion proceeds relatively rapidly and has an average duration of approximately 10,000 years. Output from the University of Toronto Glacial Systems Model, a continental scale North American glacial reconstruction of the most recent 120,000 year glaciation event developed by W. R. Peltier, is used to supply the paleoclimate boundary conditions used in this paper. Permeabilty reductions due to the presence of permafrost are also considered in the paleoclimate simulations. This paper will demonstrate that the choice of rock properties can significantly affect residual pore water pressures within the rock matrix, as well as the migration of glacial meltwater.

"The cost of deep underground mine cooling depends on a number of geological, environmental and economic factors such as the temperature gradient in the mine, the outside air temperature, and the local price of energy. While geological factors, being static, can be controlled to some extent during the mine design, the environmental and economic factors dynamically change and therefore can only be controlled through a flexible mine ventilation system.With an average temperature gradient of 20–25°C/km, the virgin rock temperature at 2,000 m can reach 45–60°C. Conventional cooling at such depths could lead to exorbitantly high costs. In-mine geothermal heat pumps can considerably reduce the cost of cooling through energy communication with the centralized absorption chillers, which service the mine from the surface.It is shown that in-mine heat pump systems can be a viable option for reducing operating expenses and providing some degree of flexibility to cope with fluctuating energy costs. The price of Natural gas and electrify are the most important variables for optimizing the level of interaction between the surface and inmine cooling systems. Deep mine waters can be used to carry a portion of the mine heat to the surface, where the heat from mine can be used as a supplementary energy source for absorption chillers. As an extra benefit, the heat output of the chillers can be used for district heating and or greenhouse growing.The case of cooling deep levels of deep mines in Sudbury Canada (e.g. Creighton Mine) has been discussed. It is shown that an initial 1MW in-mine geothermal heat pump system can save significantly on the cost of cooling. Such a demonstration project will allow R&D on viability of larger similar systems to be incrementally added in the future.INTRODUCTIONThe amount of heat generated in deep and ultra-deep mines depend primarily on the regional temperature gradient and the thermal conductivity of mine rocks. The conductive heat flow is quantifiable and can be minimized or optimized in the process of mine design. Another important heat source can be related to underground equipment such as diesel machinery which often have low efficiencies (approximately 25–35%). This heat source can be controlled and reduced though improving efficiencies or using electrical equipment, which offer a much better efficiency (approximately 80–90%). Mine waters can also be a significant heat source (convectively bringing large amounts of heat into the mine workings)."

"Water availability is one of the principal parameters in determining the feasibility of mining projects in arid and semi-arid regions. The volumetric water footprint (VWF) of a conceptual model of a copper flotation plant was found to be 2.45 kL/t Cu ore, compared with an actual measurement reported in the literature of 2.72 kL/t Cu ore. The flowsheet considered included mineral processing stages such as crushing, screening, grinding, classification, separation, flotation, thickening and filtration. The effect of a number of variables on the VWF was evaluated, including solid/liquid ratio, feed mass flowrate, ore loss, water loss, moisture content of ore, ore grade and water recycling. The use of seawater with recycling provided the most environmental and economic advantage among several scenarios evaluated. The study assumed a price of $1/kL freshwater, $4/kL for transport over a 200 km distance at 2,000 m altitude and $4/kL for water treatment. The water related cost of the desalinated seawater use scenario was A$493/t Cu concentrate, while the water related costs of fresh water and blended water scenarios were A$308/t and A$268/t Cu concentrate, respectively. The water related cost (fresh water scenario) accounted for 44% to 49% of the entire mining and processing costs that included drilling, blasting, loading, hauling, crushing, grinding and concentrating. The total overall cost was A$435/t Cu concentrate for the seawater with recycling, compared to A$451/t Cu concentrate for the fresh water with recycling case.INTRODUCTIONReducing the water footprint (WFP) by utilising alternative water sources has been a focus of mining projects due to increasing concerns about water scarcity and growing energy costs. The global mining industry can expect to experience fresh water shortages in the future, and saline or hyper-saline water may be the only available water source to process minerals in arid regions. Extensive studies on alternative water sources (e.g. seawater, desalinated seawater, blended water) and the reuse of process water have recently been conducted (Moreno, Aral, Cuevas, Monardes, Adaro, Norgate & Bruckard, 2011; Aral, Mead, Cuevas, Davey & Bruckard, 2010). Such studies provide sustainable and economic strategies for mines and concentrators in the arid or semi-arid regions of the world such as in Chile, Peru, Indonesia, and Portugal. More work, however, is needed to confirm water consumption data for different base metal flowsheets and use this data to develop water models that can lead to reduced WFPs and more sustainable water usage in the mining industry."

"Edward Haycock, Engineer and Public Contractor Edward Haycock was born in Shrewsbury, England, June 14, 1813. His father was John Haycock, a timber merchant and soap manufacturer, residing at Swan Hill Court, Shrewsbury, and his mother Esther was the daughter of William Hilton of Hempstead, Hertfordshire. Edward&apos;s paternal grandfather, John Hiram Haycock, was the first of a line of architects that ""changed the face of Shrewsbury"" and ""provided some of the best examples of typical Victorian architecture in Shropshire""(1). Nothing is known of Edward&apos;s early life or education, although it appears that he made no attempt to follow this artistic trend. In 1833, Edward immigrated to Canada. The following year, he married Mary Butler, daughter of Johnson Butler, a Lieutenant-Colonel in the Lincoln Militia during the War of 1812. Mrs. Haycock, as co-heiress of Johnson Butler&apos;s estate, was assigned 600 choice acres of farmland in Brooke Township near present-day Sarnia. This alone would have guaranteed a tidy income, but the Haycocks soon disposed of this land, the last lots being sold in May 1840. Instead, Haycock turned his hand to engineering and, for a number of years, was employed by the Great Western Railway first in Woodstock and later in Hamilton. He then moved to Port Hope, tried farming, worked in the engineering office of the Port Hope, Lindsay and Beaverton Railway Company, and later constructed a portion of this railway(2). During his stay in Port Hope, Haycock met his future partners Ralph Jones, a contractor, and Thomas Curtis Clarke, chief engineer with the P.H.L. and B. Railway Company. The alliance was styled Jones, Haycock and Company and their most successful venture was the construction of the Government Buildings in Ottawa. This work was the crowning achievement of Haycock&apos;s career and, no doubt, his proudest moment was at 11:30 a.m., April 2, 1860, when his daughter Mary Emily, then a little girl of 4, with a special silver trowel ceremoniously laid the first stone. Of special interest in this project were the quarrying operations, which introduced Haycock to the art and difficulties of mining as well as to the potential returns of mines. Sandstone, for facing, was drawn from four quarries, 10 to 12 miles from the Departmental Buildings. Haycock seems to have been in charge of these operations, which in the early stages involved an average labour force of 86 men and 43 teams. However, by 1861, quarrying had declined in importance and the contractors were able to concentrate whole-heartedly on the construction site."

"Threshold limit values (TLVs) for NO and NO2 have been reduced drastically in 2016. Emissions of diesel engines have been reduced in the last decades. In many cases this is not enough to stay under required TLVs. Remaining gas in the blasted rock is set free during loading and transport. At the end, only a combination of measures with a further reduction of diesel motor emission, replacement of diesel driven vehicles by electric equipment, new explosives with reduced NO and NO2 production, changes in the organization and effective ventilation measures can ensure that the TLVs are not exceeded. KEYWORDS Blasting fumes, Gas measurement, Gases, Threshold Limit Value (TLV) SHORT HISTORY OF EXTRACTION OF RAW MATERIALS The extraction of raw materials—besides haulage and transport—is one of the main processes in mining and tunneling. The principal objective is the creation of a material which can be transported from the place of extraction (face) to another place for further processing or direct use. Furthermore, recently a desired grain size distribution has become more important. A revolutionary development took place in the course of centuries. With the use of primitive tools like shovels, chisel and iron in the 12th/13th century in Freiberg, ore mines performances of 12 16 cm per man and week could be reached in cross section of 1 m2. Recalculated with an assumed average density, this is a performance of 0.006 t/h. With the introduction of black powder into the subsurface in 1627 by Caspar Weindl in the city of Schemnitz (nowadays Banska Stiavniza), performances increased. A part of the hard extraction work was now done by the explosives. But first in 1767, it was recognized in a mine in Freiberg that more than 1 hole could be drilled (hand-drilling) and blasted. This discovery was so important that a plate with an inscription describes this event. The performance was increased more than 10 times compared to the extraction with chisel and iron. Since this time, drilling and blasting has been the most important innovation force for the increase of the performance. Problems with noxious blasting fumes led to the construction of the first tunneling machine by Henry Joseph Mouse in 1846 (beside shield machines from 1825) (Stack, 1982)). The triumph of mining machines started only interrupted by the two world wars. The development of hard rock boring machines (including roadheaders) was enforced after 1945. An almost complete extraction by hard rock boring machines was predicted for the turn of the millennium. And, indeed, one could find powerful machines in Canadian potash mines which were able to mine 1000 t of potash in 1 hour. That was an increase in the performance by several powers of ten. But already in the 1980s, it was recognized that the ambiguous goal could not be reached. Problems with wear of the tools, radius of curves, minimal length of openings, size and costs of the machines led to a more or less parity between drilling and blasting on one side and machines on the other side, of course depending on the field of use. For this reason, drilling and blasting is still the dominant extraction technology for raw materials. In the development of drilling and blasting technologies, the focus was mainly on the improvement of the safety but also on the increase of the blasting power and performance. Examples are tests for the increase of the power of ANFO explosives which were carried out in the 1970s and 1980s, in the former teaching mine “Reiche Zeche”. In the 1980s vehicles for loading and mixing of ANFO explosives have been developed, the blasting cab sensitivity of ANFO has been increased, emulsion explosives have been developed and up to now further developments like PMMA LOX EX explosives are on the way. At the turn of the millennium, 6 million t/a explosives have been used worldwide. Annual rates of increase of 2% have been predicted (Weyer, 1999). "A novel methodology was developed to obtain a 3D porous layer with a high aspect ratio of porosity on a titanium electrode. The porous structure allowed more active material such as hydrous ruthenium oxide to be accommodated during the fabrication of the supercapacitor, resulting in an exceptionally high capacitance per surface area. The electrode demonstrated a remarkably high capacitance of 4,800 mF/cm2. The porous layer was composed of functionalized nanoparticles of TiO2 organized in a perfect 3D hexagonal close-packed array that resulted in a highly porous 3D structure. The layer was used as a template to electrolessly deposit a thin layer of silver prior to the electrodeposition of active material. La structure poreuse permet d’utiliser une matière plus active telle que l’oxyde de ruthénium hydraté durant la fabrication du supercondensateur, ce qui se traduit par une capacité exceptionnellement élevée par surface active. L’électrode affichait une capacité remarquablement élevée de 4 800 mF/cm2. La couche poreuse était composée de nanoparticules fonctionnalisées de dioxyde de titane (TiO2) organisées dans un arrangement regroupé parfaitement hexagonal en 3D, qui a engendré une structure en 3D hautement poreuse. Cette couche a servi de modèle pour le dépôt autocatalytique d’une fine couche d’argent avant l’électrodéposition de la matière active. The manufacturing of compact energy storage elements needs to be compatible with the electronic circuit microfabrication processes. Recently, interest in integrating miniaturized supercapacitors into electronic circuits has increased due to their high charge–discharge rate and long operating life; however, ultra-high power miniaturized supercapacitors suffer from low energy density, hence requiring significant enhancement in their energy density for various applications (Deng et al., 2011; Beidaghi & Wang, 2012; Chen et al., 2014)."

In a leach pile, the drainage layer or commonly known as the cover layer has been a matter of discussion due to the multiple phenomena or events that occur within it which impacts negatively the leaching process. All these events are directly related to the loss of draining capacity and irregular flow net due to an excessive compaction and entrapment of fines reducing the flow velocity which in turn cause more fines to get trapped. Over time the problem will continue to worsen rapidly and accelerating continuously like a geometric progression. When the cover layer gets to a certain level of deterioration, the only alternative to continue operating safely is to replace the entire cover material, a huge cost for any mining operation. TESRA has developed a solution to counteract the accelerated advance of the deterioration of the drainage layer. The solution consists of using large agricultural tractors coupled to a proprietary design of a heavy- duty subsoiler-ripper for deep tillage for loosening and breaking up the ground at various depth and with different legs spacing from 0.4 m or above. Also, if the ground still requires additional breaking, TESRA proposes the use of a rototiller that breaks any lumps to homogenize the ground to a certain particle size. With the subsoiler-ripper/rototiller combination equipment a layer of 0.5 m deep is properly treated to match closely the original conditions of the ground thus regaining the flow net as close as to the original seepage condition. Once the ripping is completed the subsoiler-ripper tool is replaced with another that is similar to a plow and thus continue with the installation of drainage pipes. The tool digs a Y-type profile trench allowing the pipe to sit precisely at the bottom of the trench, contributing additional lateral and lower support. This tool controls the installation depth of the drainage pipe at different inclination grades and also eliminating any irregularities that may block the flow of the leaching solution. Sometimes the obstructions block completely the flow of the solution. The main result of this methodology is the reduction of groundwater levels and at least 2% less humidity in the leaching gravel due to an increase in the draining capacity of cover. The methodology developed by TESRA applied during a couple of cycles of a dynamic leach pile has proven to be a real alternative to remedy and recuperate the cover close to its original conditions. The methodology requires only one large tractor and two accessories operated in different stages while replacing the more traditional and less efficient machinery such as the Bulldozer, Motor-grader, and backhoes.

Geological mapping on the Canadian Shield in northeastern Alberta outlined severalgranitoid rock massespotentially suitable as building stone. A particularly attractive prospect, the Chipewyan Red Granite, was subjected to an aerial survey and ground check. The petrologic and fracture characteristics critical for quarrying and use as a building stone were assessed in the course of detailed mapping at two of the most favourable sites. The extension of good rock was tested to shallow depths at one site by shallow diamond-drill coring. , The Chipewyan Red Granite displays a warm red colour, medium grain size and fairly massive texture, and takes a good polish. Deleterious geologic features studied in outcrop and subjected to structural analysis included regular joint systems, quartz veins, pegmatite dykes, basic shear zones and fault zones. Many of these key geologic features are systematic and hence predictable for stone quarrying purposes; other features, such as irregular fracelM tures, are non-systematic and arefar less predictable. The megascopic structural features studied show similar preferred orientations which appear to be collectively related to the tectonic history.

Corrosion is a major operational problem in amine-treating plants causing significant expenditures each year, Corrosion may become more severe when the amine plants contain process contaminants ? namely heat-stable salts. The heat-stable salts enter the plants with feed-gas streams and makeup-solution, and/or are produced within the plants by reactions of alkanolamine and available carboxylic-acid anions, This work investigated interaction corrosion effects that may exist in amine-treating plants containing a mixture of heat-stable salts, The investigation was experimentally carried out in a 5 kmol/m3 monoethanolamine (MEA) solution containing 0,20 mol/mol carbon dioxide (CO2) loading at 80°C under atmospheric pressure using carbon steel 1018, Six heat-stable salts, including formate, oxalate, bicine, acetate, thiosulfate and chloride, were tested with a series of salt combinations, Potentiodynamic Polarization, Tafel Extrapolation, and Cyclic Polarization were used for revealing corrosion behavior, determining corrosion rate, and examining the pitting tendency, respectively, Results show that thiosulfate induces the most corrosive environment when present either individually or in the form of salt mixtures.

"THE copper smelting operation of the Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting Company, Limited, at Flin Flon, Manitoba, generates a gas flow of 350,000 c.f.m. at n.t.p. This gas stream passes to atmosphere through a 20-foot diameter by 250-foot brick stack, carrying with it an appreciable dust burden in the form of metallic oxide fumes. The flow constituents during the period 1952 and 1953 and •before gas filtration was included in the treatment scheme are shown in Table I. This paper describes the gas filtration treatment which was installed in 1957, using glass cloth media to recover this dust burden, and discusses the associated problem as its treatment for recovery of zinc and cadmium.The metallurgical details associated with the problem are illustrated by a description of the material flow sequence of the Company's hydrometallurgical zinc plant and copper smelter. In this ore processing complex, the zinc plant and copper smelter form an integrated unit within which intermediate zincrich products of each operation enter the treatment circuit of the other."

The results presented in this paper show that the gold solution dilution is a key parameter to control the dispersion of gold on ?-Al2O3 the selected support. The variation of concentration leads to changes in pH which modify the nature of gold complexes from HAuCl4 formed in the solution. These complexes are presented. Some of them (AuCl3(OH)- and AuCl2(OH)2 -) react with the surface of alumina and give interesting interaction. AuCl2(OH)2 complex has been considered as an ideal complex because of the strong anchorage of a bidentate species on the alumina. This complex is formed mainly in a solution of gold with a concentration of 10-4 M giving a pH of 3.5-4.5. The nature of the anchorage and the amount of chlorine, has an influence upon the formation of Au-Cl bridges which modify the dispersion of the gold on alumina of the final catalyst as shown by TEM.

Gold present in arsenopyrite matrices is refractory and requires highly oxidative pretreatments in order to obtain acceptable degrees of extraction. However, these release many byproducts that are harmful to the environment. In the present work, a high-grade arsenopyritic ore was pretreated with different solutions, containing hydroxide ion, EDTA, oxalic, tartaric, or citric acids, to improve gold extractions in a posterior leaching step. The pretreatments were carried out at room temperature for 24 hours with a respective ligand concentration of 0.25 M. Once completed, the residue was leached in a thiosulfate solution to quantify the effect of the pretreatment on gold extraction. Only 29% of the gold content was leached, with very slow kinetics, in the untreated mineral. However, after pretreatment with tartaric or citric acid, the kinetics improved, although the percentage of gold extraction only reached 42-45%. The highest gold recovery, with very rapid kinetics, was found with the oxalic acid or the hydroxyl ion pretreatment (70 and 62%), respectively, but also corresponded to the most arsenic co-dissolution.

Despite the claims of energy efficiency and the considerable development that has gone into dramatically extending rolls? life and facilitating rolls? change-out, in the six years since the last SAG conference, only a few HPGR operations have entered the realm of mineral processing. Risk barriers to the take-up of new equipment or processes are: a massive increase in materials handling issues as well as in the number of pieces of equipment required, low total circuit potential energy savings, and similar or higher capital costs. An alternative route is to make use of the complementary strengths of the HPGR and SAG in hybrid circuits. Minimising materials handling issues, providing an ideal balanced feed to the AG or SAG mill, and improving controllability through shifting grinding load as the RoM feed changes, are all potential major advantages to this approach. Conceptual circuit layouts, based on real measured ore and equipment data, are presented here to illustrate the potential production upside, the reduction in operating costs and the reduction in the physical and energy footprints.

The Cargill deposit, located 32 km south west of Kapuskasing, Ontario, was discovered by International Minerals and Chemical Corporation in 1975 and has been evaluated through an extensive program of drilling, chemical analyses, metallurgical tests and engineering and economic studies. The Cargill alkalic complex, comprising mainly carbonatite and pyroxenite-amphibolite rocks, was intruded into the rift system of the Kapuskasing magnetic-gravity high. Weathering and leaching under assumed temperate to cool climatic conditions plus faulting, shearing and/ or initial petrographic variations within the carbonatite developed a small, locally confined karst system. This resulted in a thick enriched leached carbonatite zone capped by troughs and sinks, and filled with a residuum of apatite, goethite, clay and other minerals. Residuum thickness ranges from nonexistent on ridges to 170 m in troughs and sinks. Apatite values are 5 to 15% in fresh carbonatite, 20 to 40% in leached carbonatite and 20 to 98% in residuum. A tentative open-pit mine designed for preliminary feasibility studies is estimated to contain 62.5 million tonnes averaging 19.6% P20 5.

Measurements made with high precision GPS landmarks and geotechnical radar Reutech MSR- 300 associated with the observed movements in the north face of Assarel Mine, where on a horizontal distance of 50 m, 2 groups of landmarks indicated different deformation behavior. Measurements are made in order to confirm the applicability of the radar system in regions of complex geotechnical conditions. The standard deviation of each landmark is used as an accuracy standard between the separate measurements of the deformation vectors made by the high-precision GPS system for each landmark. A very good correlation between the displacement vectors can be seen based on the measurements made with the high-precision GPS system and the measurements made by the radar system MSR-300. Geological, engineering geological and hydro-geological conditions of the area of concern are discussed in this paper. The measured deformations and the FLAC/SLOPE analysis show similar results. In the paper is discussed their local character and their sensitivity to other geotechnical and hydro geological conditions.

"Nuclear energy is an established and proven energy source. Today, CANDU-PHW nuclear-electric generating stations produce over one third of Ontario&apos;s total electrical supply: safely and economically. In many parts of Canada, where economic hydro resources do not exist or are fully developed, coal and nuclear energy are the only alternatives for future large-scale electrical generating capacity.Recent analyses have suggested that, in the f ace of increasing energy demands and decreasing reserves of hydrocarbon fuels, Canada must depend on electricity to provide an expanded fraction of its energy budget. Nuclear energy is likely to play an increasing role in the generation of electricity; there are also potential applications as a supplier of process heat in industry and in the in-situ recovery of bitumen fro m tar sands.The future supply of nuclear fuel, reactor safety and radioactive waste management are briefly discussed. In each case, the benefits to be gained from a controlled expansion in the use of nuclear energy outweigh any uncertainties which may exist."

"After producing some 50 million tonnes of crude steel the two BOF vessels at Dillinger Hüitte steel plant had to be replaced in 2000/01 due to large deformations. The new vessel design was optimised after a number of theoretical evaluations.Refractory investigations were carried out as well as temperature measurements of the shell to provide a basis for selecting a suitable steel grade. This was found in a DH-GTS development - P420M HT - with high strength at elevated temperatures and excellent weldability and made it also possible to build the vessel without any cooling system.After putting the first vessel into operation the metallurgical results showed no remarkable improvement compared to the old vessel, and were therefore not satisfying. With the help of cold model investigations the arrangement of the tuyeres was modified to improve the flow conditions and the interactions between oxygen jet and the heterogeneous plume of the bottom stirring gas. Further optimisations were obtained by a variation of lance tips and a newly developed lime addition model."
