Central Texas added 76 producing oil and gas wells during the year, abandoned 378 wells in the same period, and produced 10,359,905 bbl. of oil in the 12 months under consideration. The oil production represents a decline of only 3 per cent as compared to 1934, but it must be remembered that much new production was added during the year. The activity in new work centered in Frio, Bexar, Williamson and Cald-well counties, with development in the Pearsall, Von Ormy and Byersville fields taking first importance. New discoveries in 1935 were confined to Pearsall area of Frio County and an extension to the Darst Creek field in Guadalupe County. The Red Lake field, in eastern Freestone County, proved itself of importance from the standpoint of a gas reserve but no oil production has yet been obtained. In Bexar County, the Von Ormy field, in which the discovery well was drilled early in 1934, completed 22 oil producers during the year. New Fields Pearsal1.—The Amerada Petroleum Corporation, in developing its 60,000-acre block in Frio County, has definitely proved the existence of commercial oil production in four separate horizons; namely, the Navarro, the Austin Chalk, the Buda and the Georgetown. The discovery well, a two million cubic foot gas well, was tompleted in 1934. A test of the Trinity sand at 10,050 ft. found salt water but later was plugged back and finished as an oil well in the Navarro sand. Most recent of their discoveries has been in the Austin Chalk at a depth of 5666 ft., where a 24-hr. gage through 1-in. choke showed 2640 bbl. of pipe line oil. The oil has a gravity of 28.0" A.P.I. and is brownish in color. Because of lack of pipe lines in the area, the wells are produced only for short periods of time, and it is predicted that development will be slow until the district is entered by pipe line purchasing companies. The paper describes a machine developed for the purpose of concentrating clear optical grade fluorspar crystal from a feed material containing less than 1 pct impurities. The principle of concentration is based on the fact that in a liquid having an index of refraction equal to that of fluorite (n — 1.434) clear crystals are invisible, whereas crystals containing occluded impurities absorb a part of the light. As the crystals pass through a light beam, undesired crystals give themselves away by creating a shadow on a photoelectric receiver. .The shadow is converted by the photoelectric cell into an electric pulse. An electronic circuit amplifies this pulse and commands the operation of a mechanical concentrator. A search of the known fluorspar deposits did not indicate that any quantity of optical spar could be obtained. Even the best material had to be sorted by hand to remove impurities. The process for growing CaF, crystals developed by Professor D. C. Stockbarger of the Dept. of Physics, M.I.T., necessitates very pure feed materials. Exclusion of impurities is required, even in amounts detectable only spectrographically. The impurities occurred as minute inclusions of SiO,, BaSO,, CaCO,, FeS2, water or air. Crystals up to 4 in. in diam and weighing several pounds are made by the Harshaw Chemical Co. in Cleveland. Since the time required to grow a 4-in. crystal is about one week, and since the cost of manufacture is high, removal of impurities by any concentration method appeared practical. The mineral engineering section of the Dept. of Metallurgy undertook to investigate the possibility of concentrating clear optical fluorspar, —4 mesh + 10 mesh, from a feed containing over 99 pct CaF,. Various innovations of the known methods of concentration were considered, but in each case the minute amount of impurities associated with the crystal produced such extremely small differences

IN making gold alloys possessing certain physical properties, such important factors as corrosion resistance, color, hardness and melting points must be considered. All of these requirements depend directly upon the composition. It is possible to obtain the same colored gold alloy by using different compositions, but in doing so one may bring in some undesirable property. Other investigations have been carried on in this field by F. E. Carter,1 E. M. Wise,2 and L. Sterner-Rainer.3 To make a complete study of the effect of composition upon these properties, a systematic investigation was carried on involving a range of copper content from 85 to 65 per cent. Elements such as zinc, silver and nickel were used to replace in part the copper content. The gold content in all the alloys remained constant. Only 10-karat gold alloys of those containing 41.6 per cent gold will be considered. All of the alloys were made in an induction furnace. Each alloy was cast in a 3 by ¼ by ¾ -in. ingot. The method of obtaining the melting points and making color determinations was described in a previous paper.4 The Rockwell B scale with the ball and 100-kg. weight was used for all hardness determinations. The submersion of test pieces in concentrated nitric acid is one of the standard corrosion tests used in the optical trade. A test piece in the 50 per cent cold-worked condition, ½ by 2 by 0.043 in., is blanked from a strip using a. die, and the weight, loss per square inch of surface is taken as a means of comparison. The time for this test is 2 ½ hr. of actual sub-mersion of the test piece in the acid. This standard test was applied to all of the 10-karat gold alloys discussed in this paper. The tensile tests were made upon strips of the dimensions shown in Fig. 1. The test pieces after blanking were annealed at 1300° F. for 20 min. and cooled in air. The "drop of the beam" method was used in determining the yield point, as there was a very marked "drop" when the yield point was reached.

DuRing the year of 1937, the East Texas district produced 211,194,467 hbl. of oil and marketed more than 22,329 million cu. ft. of gas; 3377 oil and gas wells were completed. During this same period 106 exploratory wells were drilled, discovering three new oil fields and one gas-distillate field. Fields East Texas Field.—The East Texas field again led the district as to production and number of wells completed. During the year, 2420 oil wells were completed, making a total of 24,382 producing wells, which produced 171,336,854 bbl. of oil, for a total of 1,156,352,834 bbl. since the beginning. During the year the average bottom-hole pressure dropped 49 lb., making the average bottom-hole pressure 1119 lb. Approximately 3500 wells are making salt water, 20 per cent of them making over 80 per cent of the water. During the month of December, the daily average production of salt water was 119,000 barrels. Talco Field, Titus and Franklin Counties.—The Talco field produced 9,780,948 bbl. of oil during the year, from 637 wells. During the year 472 wells were completed. All of the wells are pumping and 241 are making salt water. This field has followed a normal development and did not exceed the estimated number of acres reported last year. Rodessa Field, Cuss and Marion Counties.—The Rodessa field was extended about 13 miles southwest into Marion County, which added approximately 4000 acres to the field. During the year 260 wells were completed, making a total of 416 producing wells, which produced 12,646,-970 bbl. of oil. The author was unable to obtain figures for the amount of gas produced. The field has two gasoline plants, which had a daily average of 16,558,000 cu. ft. of gas during December, averaging 0.83 gal. per M cu. ft. As of Jan. 1, 31 wells were making salt water. R. E. Hoffman and D. Turnbull—The authors have presented evidence which they have interpreted as indicating that the rate of self diffusion is not intrinsically more rapid at grain boundaries than within the grain. Grain-size effects which apparently exist are attributed rather to impurities concentrated at the grain boundaries. In view of our own experiments and the existing evidence, we believe that the support for this hypothesis is not convincing. We have in progress an investigation in which the rate of self diffusion of silver is being measured over an extended temperature range in both single-crystal and polycrystalline specimens. The results of the single-crystal experiments and some preliminary data on fine-grained polycrystalline specimens have already been reported:' and it is anticipated that a complete report will be published in the near future. The self-diffusion coefficient of large-grained polycrystalline silver (1 grain per sq mm) has previously been measured by Johnson" between 730" and 940°C. The diffusion coefficients which we have measured in single crystals (210 plane normal to diffusion direction) agree within experimental error with values calculated from an extrapolation of Johnson's curve down to temperatures as low as 500 °C. However, it has been demonstrated that the overall self-diffusion rate in fine-grained polycrystalline specimens (initial grain size of 0.003 cm) becomes measurably larger than the overall rate in a single crystal at a temperature of 600°C, and the discrepancy between the two rates becomes greater as the temperature is further decreased. In fact, it has been possible to obtain satisfactory penetration curves for polycrystalline specimens using the sectioning technique at temperatures as low as 400°C. At this temperature, the penetration is 50 to 100 times greater in the polycrystalline specimens than in a single crystal. Fisher" has developed an analysis whereby the ratio of the rate of the unit diffusion process at the grain boundary to the corresponding rate within the grain can be calculated from the penetration curves and an assumption as to the width of a grain boundary. This analysis applied to our data indicates that the unit process at the grain boundary is faster by a factor of 10' at 475°C when the grain boundary width is taken to be 5. The silver used in most of these experiments was obtained from the Handy and Harmon Co. and listed as 99.97 pct pure. Preliminary experiments on 99.999 pct silver from the Jarrel-Asch Co. indicate a grain-size effect of the same order of magnitude as in the less pure silver. Nominally, these purities are as good, at least, as that of the carbonyl iron used by the authors, but of course if an impurity effect does exist its magnitude might be very dependent upon the nature of both major and minor constituents. The authors have cited the work of other investigators who have found no grain-size effects. Neither Steigman, Shockley and Nix" nor Maier and Nelson8 were able to correlate self-diffusion coefficients of copper with grain size. However, all their measurements were performed at or above 750°C; and on the basis of our work with silver, no grain-size effect would be expected at temperatures above about 0.7 of the absolute melting temperature unless the grain size were exceedingly small. Likewise, in the investigation of the self diffusion of lead by Seith and Keil,14 the lowest temperature at which the diffusion coefficient was measured in polycrystalline specimens was 207°C, which is still sufficiently high so that the lack of a grain-size effect is not surprising. Finally, in those experiments on iron from which they concluded that there was no grain size effect, Drs. Birchenall and Mehl seem to have no information as to the actual grain sizes immediately prior to and following the diffusion anneal. Without this information, we believe that their own experiments offer little support for their hypothesis. F. S. Buffington, I. D. Bakalar, and M. Cohen—The results given in this paper agree in order of magnitude with those tentatively reported by us.27 However, significant differences exist in the two sets of data, and it may be well to make an explicit comparison. The diffusion studies at M.I.T. were conducted on somewhat higher purity iron (99.98 pct Fe) than the grades used by the authors, but this is undoubtedly not the answer. Fig. 4 shows the diffusion results of both laboratories for the gamma phase, omitting the authors' data on the commercial steels, while fig. 5 presents a similar comparison for the alpha phase. The divergence is much more marked in the latter case than in the former. In connection with the M.I.T. determinations, all of the runs in the gamma range and those above 800 °C in the alpha range were conducted with specimens having a relatively thick (0.002 cm) electrodeposit of radioactive iron. This practice minimizes any possible error due to extraneous diffusion that may occur during the heating to and cooling from the operating temperature. An exact solution of Fick's law for these boundary conditions was used in calculating the diffusion coefficients. At a later time, three runs were made below 800°C, using very thin electrodeposits similar to those of the authors, and the points fell considerably below the values expected from the extrapolation of the results based on the specimens with the thick deposits (compare dash-dot line in fig. 5). However, in the runs with the thin deposits, deviations of 100 pct were found between the individual specimens, whereas the maximum deviation with the thick deposits was less than 25 pct. Accordingly, it is not known at the moment whether the M.I.T. points below 800 °C should be given as much weight as those above 800°C. If this were done, the frequency factor would be of the order of 400 cm2 per sec, which is quite high. In other metals, the frequency factor for self diffusion lies between about 0.1 and 10 cm2 per sec. As the points below

Fused alumina or silica crucibles were used as the containing vessel. X-ray powder photographs were taken with CrKcll radiation and the use of Straumanis type Norelco cameras of 114.6 mm diam. Crystallographic data for these compounds are shown in Table I. These results are in agreement with others of this series reported previousiy by Wernick and Geller.l The abnormally large atomic volume of Eu and Yb metal3 is manifested in EuAl2, and YbAl2, when one compares them with the compounds reported in Ref. 1. However, the behavior of Yb in the Ni compound is the same as that observed in Ni5Yb having the Cu5Ca structure.4 Thus, it appears that Yb has a valence closer to 3 only in the Ni compounds; i.e.. the 2s and Id electrons are lost to the conduction band.1,4 Europium in EuAl2 appears to have a valence closer to 2. In previous work.' X-ray patterns of ingots of NdCo2 indicated a multiphase material with faint indication of the presence of a phase having the MgCu2 structure. It was thought that NdCo2 formed peri-tectically from the melt, resulting in a multiphase system when cooled under nonequilibrium conditions. An X-ray pattern of a sample from a melt cooled more slowly than in past work showed that the major phase was NdCo2. The lattice constant, Table 1, is in excellent agreement with the value one can predict from the data of Ref. 1. One of the other phases was identified as Co5Nd. The author wishes to thank J. H. A reinvestigation of the lattice parameters of Ti-Sn alloys by the present authors has revealed consistently hiher c and a values than those obtained by Worrier. The difference is most pronounced in the c-parameters which are, therefore, used as a basis of comparison. This discrepancy was not due to air contamination, since precautions were taken to exclude this possibility. Specimens for Debye-Scherrer photograms were prepared by arc-melting 15-g buttons of Bureau of Mines titanium and 99.99 pct Sn, with compositions of 6, 8, 10, and 12 at. pct Sn. These buttons were forged under an oxygen-acetylene torch to 1/8-in. sq rods to produce relatively fine grained material. Scale and some surface were ground off, and the rods, after wrapping in molybdenum and titanium sheet, were vacuum annealed 15 min at 800 °C to remove hydrogen. Heat treatment of one of the samples at 875°C to produce ß and reveal a at the surface showed no surface contamination. Following the vacuum treatment, the specimens were wrapped in molybdenum and annealed for 1 week at 800°C under two atmospheres of argon. After water-quenching, the rods were ground so that the thickness tapered to 0.1 mm at the tips. The ground specimens were then recapsuled as previously and reannealed 1 hr at 800°C to remove cold work. The

Originally round tensile specimens of a eutectic Zn-A1 alloy develop elliptical cross sections during superplastic deformation. This observation, coupled with a detailed study of the microstructure and preferred orieniation, suggests that crystallographic slip and continuous grain boundary migration or re-crystallization are important processes during super-plastic deformation. In spite of the extensive activity in superplasticity1-15 and the numerous explanations proposed, no single model has had universal acceptance. It has been established, however, that the general requirements for superplastic extension of two-phase alloys include an extremely fine, stabilized grain size of the order of a few microns, a temperature about equal to or greater than one-half the melting point, a critical range of strain rate, and a similarity in the mechanical strength of the major phases. The proposed models can perhaps best be characterized in terms of the important phenomena associated with them. These phenomena include: phase instability,1 diffusional creep by volume diffusion3 or grain boundary diffusion4,5 slip and continuous grain boundary migration or recrystalliza-tion,= grain boundary Sliding,7-9,13,14 and dislocation glide.'5 In this paper, experimental observations will be reported which support a model involving slip and continuous grain boundary migration or recrystalliza-tion. Specifically, a correlation will be made between this model and the development of elliptical cross sections as originally round specimens are superplas-tically deformed. For the most part, superplasticity studies have been conducted with eutectic or eutectoid alloys. Probably the most thoroughly studied material has been the monotectoid Zn-A1 alloy.1,2,6,12,13,15 No attention to the eutectic Zn-A1 alloy has previously been reported, and the results discussed in this paper represent part of a general study of the superplastic properties of this alloy. MATERIALS The alloys used in this investigation were prepared by melting appropriate quantities of 99.99+ pct A1 and 99.999 pct Zn in air, mixing, and pouring into a water- cooled stainless-steel mold. Wet-chemical analysis was conducted with each heat of alloy prepared, using the procedure of Fish and smith.16 The composition of the eutectic alloy was 95.1 wt pct Zn. Ingots about 2 in. thick were rolled to 0.4-in. plate at about 300°C with a reduction of 5 to 10 pct per pass. Specimens were machined from the plate with the tensile axis parallel to the rolling direction. The specimens were round, with 0.150-in.-diam, 1.25-in.-long gage length, and 0.25-in.-diam threaded grip sections. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Specimens were mounted inside a uniform-temperature quartz tube which was surrounded by a double elliptical radiant furnace with a 12-in.-long uniform-temperature hot zone and a low thermal capacity. The tube extended through the top and bottom of the furnace and permitted rapid quenching of the loaded specimens when quickly filled with cold water at the conclusion of the test. The quench precluded any effects on specimen microstructure from a normal, slow cool. Constant stress was applied to test specimens by suspending a load on a constant stress cam of the type described by Hopkin.17 The design of this cam permitted application of a constant stress for elongations up to 200 pct. For greater elongation, approximately constant stress conditions were maintained by systematically reducing the load manually. RESULTS As part of an investigation of the superplastic properties of the eutectic Zn-A1 alloy, evidence was obtained for the development of elliptically shaped cross sections as originally round specimens were extended. For example, after an elongation of about 100 pct, a round specimen with an initial diameter of 0.150 in. became elliptical with major and minor axis of 0.128 and 0.88 in., respectively. Photographs are presented to illustrate the ellipticity developed during superplastic deformation, Fig. 1. The specimen shown was deformed at a stress of 500 psi, at a temperature of 285°C, and a strain rate of 2.28 x 10-2 min-1. THE petroleum engineers have the conference habit. They drop in, thresh things over, and drop out. No time is wasted. So it was at the Fort Worth meeting of the Petroleum Division, Thursday and Friday, Oct. 8 and 9; headquarters, Blackstone Hotel. Associate Chairman Albertson arrived the morning of the 7th, to tie in any loose ends of the technical program. S. M. Greenidge, chairman of the local committee, checked the arrangements with his committeemen at a luncheon that noon. By mid-afternoon the next day's attendance was anybody's guess-there were no noses to count. But when the gavel sounded Thursday morning 175 members and guests were present, also the official A.I.M.E. party consisting of President Lovejoy, Secretary Parsons, and George Otis Smith. Shortly after adjournment Friday afternoon all but a handful had vamoosed, lit out, disap¬peared. But, in the meantime, it was a grand conference, attendance maximum every session, and the discussion fast and furious. The discussion came from all over the floor, sometimes as good-natured sniping, sometimes in long volleys that were almost fatal to the reporter. Everyone knew his subject and few there were who had nothing to say.

THE Fall Meetings of the Institute of Metals Division and of the Iron and Steel Division were held in Cleveland from Tuesday, Oct. 20, to Thursday, Oct. 22, as a part of the National Metal Congress. The registration at the technical sessions was something over 450 and the attendance at the joint dinner of the two Divisions on Wednesday evening taxed the capacity of the dining room. The president of the British Institute of Metals, W. R. Barclay, consulting metallurgist to the Mond Nickel Co., Ltd.; of London, was in attendance at several of the technical sessions and was one of the after-dinner speakers at the banquet. He commented on the desirability of greater international amity and cooperation in these troubled times and of the role that technical societies, such as the A. I. M. E. and his own British Institute of Metals, can and indeed are playing in bringing this to pass, with their membership and contacts reaching to all parts of the world. He also referred to the new reciprocal membership arrangements in effect between the A.I.M.E. and the British Institute of Metals.
