The subject of this lecture, a late century perspective on porphyry copper geology, is one of current interest and importance as the search for these ores remains intense. It is presented in the belief that an appreciation of our present understanding of the subject requires it to be viewed historically, thus providing a basis for evaluating appropriate directions for con¬tinued study. At the outset, it is important to note that the technology of mining and extractive metallurgy has developed ore from these low grade orebodies, starting with D. C. Jackling, and has continued to create them as copper grade and price have diminished. But the continued search for them is a geological problem that responds to growing expectations of people and societies; exploration based upon ever increasing knowledge of the habits of the ores has been very successful. This is the story of evolution of geological thought and practice in porphyry ore search across an interval of time beginning with the bulk mining of "low grade copper ores at Bingham and ending with late Century concepts. "How did we get here?" The lecture concerns the ideas of many different people. The ideas and events discussed reflect a bias on North American thought, where the great low grade orebodies were first recognized as such and where many of the basic geological ideas were developed. A very great number of geologists have contributed to this understanding. In no sense is it meant to minimize the contributions to the story that have evolved in the study and mining of ores of the Andes, whose development and expansion has been nearly synchronous with that in North America - nor to minimized comparable contributions made in the late century from studies of the newer discoveries of deposits in other regions, especially the southwestern Pacific regions. In expansion of this topic, I have found that many important concepts are marked by appropriate publication but some are not, or I have not been able to discover documentation. Many notions appear to have become conventional knowledge without publication, mostly being geological viewpoints developed synchronously from similar observation. Thus, apologies are extended in advance to those whose work I have might have missed and to those unknown to me whose unpublished ideas may have seeped into the pool of common knowledge without appropriate recognition. . The analysis here addresses events of two time segments, an older one extending from the developments at Bingham in the early 1900s through the Second World War, ending about 1950; the second period extends from that time to the present. This separation is seen in Figure 1, which traces numbers of publications through the period as extracted from some 700 publications, again with a North American bias, from an annotated bibliography of porphyry copper geology in preparation. During the early period, exploration was "immature" in North America, that is, geologists looked for new districts and sites of the deposits. Outcrops were sought that carried the signatures of former mineralization and regional controls related to structural geology were closely studied. In the later period, North American exploration had "matured" into a study of districts, rather than a search for them. As the studies of these ores intensified during the younger period concommitant with increasing demands for the metal, they did so with a broadened understanding of some habits of occurrence, of hydrothermal alteration, mineral zoning, petrology, and geochemical and geophysical signatures. Meramec Mining Company, a joint venture by Bethlehem Steel Corporation and St. Joe Minerals Corporation, is engaged in the mining, concentrating, and pelletizing of iron ore from the Pea Ridge Mine located near Sullivan, Missouri, about 70 miles southwest of St. Louis. The orebody was delineated in the mid-1950's by St. Joe during an exploration program to discover new lead orebodies. An airborne magnetometer survey which was run by the U. S. Geological Survey, the Missouri Geological Survey, and several min¬ing companies was published in 1950 and showed an anomaly in the Pea Ridge area. Test holes drilled in 1953 and 1954 revealed the presence of a large orebody of probable commercial significance; additional drilling in 1956 and 1957 provided confirmation of this. Meramec Mining Company was incorporated in 1957 and shaft sinking began in the latter part of that year. The Pea Ridge orebody lies under about 1300 feet of sediments. It is tabular, about 2600 feet long and up to 600 feet thick, and lies in an approximate east-west delineation. The orebody dips about 800S and is of unknown depth. The ore is primarily high grade magnetite with smaller zones of specular hematite, The Pre-cambrian wall rock is rhyolite porphyry. The close integration of mine planning and mine operation continues to be the goal of mine operators. Depending upon the complexity, size and sophistication of the mine, limited success has been achieved in this area. Despite tremendous strides in the development of computer-aided mine planning, digital plans must usually be converted to error-prone paper maps and physical ground surveys for actual excavation and reclamation. However, advances in global positioning systems (GPSs), operator displays and mobile computers now enable equipment operators to work directly from on-board digital plans. A computer-aided earthmoving system (CAES) offers reduced survey costs, faster field transition time and improved excavation accuracy, coupled with faster, more informed decision making regarding key mining operations.

A study was conducted to assess the feaeibility of increasing the heap height above one lift at the Alligator Ridge Mine. This study concentrated on the physical aspects of the heap and liner performance. Two principle aspects were addressed during this investigation: (a) the adequacy of heap permeability under present and future loading conditions; and (b) the adequacy of the liner to limit seepage losses. Field and laboratory test a were performed and their details and results are presented. It was concluded that the permeability of the heap would remain adequate for higher heap. The geometry of the heap will be the major constraint. It was also concluded that the liner would perform satisfactorily beneath higher heap.

A novel methodology for estimating gold recoveries in gravity-separation circuits is presented. The methodology makes use of a population-balance model. The model represents gold liberation, breakage and classification behavior and applies preconcentration and recovery performance curves to gravity-recoverable gold. The derivation of the necessary parameters is explained and demonstrated using data from an actual gravity circuit and from a projected application. The methodology makes it possible to estimate the performance of a gravity circuit having a large gold circulating load and a relatively-low unit recovery (e.g., a jig) or having a high recovery on a bleed of the circulating load (e.g., a Knelson Concentrator).

A brief study of the history of gas caverns in salt formations enables us to consider creep mechanism in a cavity as a phenomenon of dissymmetrical deformation. Among different parameters affecting such a phenomenon, gravity forces, especially in large caverns, seem to be responsible for important bottom heaves as compared to roof releases. This fact is demonstrated here by means of certain theoretical considerations concerning elasto-viscoplastic constitutive laws relevant to rocksalt rheological behavior.

Consolidation Coal Co. (Consol) supports an active research and development effort to improve the safe, productive mining of coal and to use coal in an environmentally acceptable manner: Attention will be focused on degasification of coal seams, continuous coal transport systems, earth sciences activities, and coal combustion. Brief mention will be made regarding the SO2 emissions control programs. The research program constitutes about 1 % of Consol coal sales, which positions Consol as the preeminent coal company supporting broad-based research addressing the full spectrum of the various problems associated with using the nation's abundant reserves of economical, readily available fuel.

Sandsloot open pit is situated on the northern limb of the Bushveld Complex, 250 km north east of Johannesburg, South Africa. Sandsloot is currently the largest open pit platinum mine in the world and is one of six potential open pits in the area. The geotechnical strength properties of the Platreef have posed significant mining and processing challenges to the PPRust operation since inception in 1992. In order to optimise the whole business as opposed to isolated cost centres a mine to mill initiative was embarked upon in 1997. Initial work focussed on ore characterisation and an entire suite of data was collected for each rock type. This included mineralogy, geochemistry, geotechnical, blastability indices as well as metallurgical strength data. The second phase involved the clear definition of customer requirements, namely the optimum performance criteria for the plant and mining departments. This involved extensive field trials and data capture to measure the interaction and influence of the mine to mill value chain. Once the design targets were defined a 3D geotechnical model was constructed to ensure that the targets were consistently achieved. The model is very similar to an ore reserve model however it is populated with geotechnical, metallurgical and blast index data. Through software queries the appropriate blast powder factor for each mining block can be obtained thereby ensuring the correct fragmentation is blasted for the plant and mining operation. The initiative has delivered significant results showing improvements across the mine to mill value chain. These include increased loading rates, reduced electricity and crushing consumables as well as higher plant throughput. Additionally, the initiative has benefited both Brownfield and Greenfield projects on the PPRust operation.

United Nations (UN) has been leading an international committee to define the guidelines in reporting resources and reserves. The system proposed by UN is very similar to the guidelines currently in use in Australia known as JORC guidelines (Joint Organisation Reserves Committee). The JORC guidelines show major differences in relation to the Brazilian system current in practice. The important aspects differing JORC from the current Brazilian guidelines for reporting reserves is the required sampling spacing. The JORC system requires the points of observation to be closer spaced than the Brazilian system for any class of resources. All classification systems share some common aspects in terms of defining the classes of resources based on distance separating samples and on the degree of confidence or accuracy associated with the results reported. Despite of being very clear in terms of stating sample distances, all the systems of classification do not provide clear definitions on how confidence limits should be calculated. This paper proposes a geostatistical framework to measure the uncertainty associated with the reported tonnages and grades. Results demonstrate that the error associated with an estimate can be approximated using multiple simulated deposits to define confidence limits. The methodology is illustrated in a large Brazilian coal deposit and proved to be appropriate to address the issue of quantifying the uncertainty necessary to be incorporated in the systems of reserves classification.

The tremendous growth in grinding mill size and horsepower during the 70s demanded advancements in gear cutting technology and equipment for the 80s. A new standard in gear cutting machines is now used to generate-cut large open gear sets to over 12.2 m (40 ft) in diameter at an AGMA quality level much higher than the accepted levels a short five years ago. The precision of the resulting gear set assures maximum tooth contact with the resultant longer gear set life.

What is the most economical way of tunneling in mixed ground that may experience high pressures? Non-continuously pressurized, mixed ground Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs) are being utilized to deal with a wide range of geology. Continuous improvements in these mixed ground machines allow for ever-increasing efficiency and reduction of project risk due to unexpected conditions. We will explore the performance of recent mixed ground machines throughout the world and then look at how new improvements to mixed ground machines will enable excavation of an expanded range of ground conditions. These conditions include mixed ground with low fines, mixed face rock, and fracture/fault zones with high pressures where in the past a Slurry TBM may have been utilized.

For at least five decades, a plume containing acidic metal-bearing water has been moving through the shallow alluvial aquifer along Pinal Creek in the Globe-Miami area. Two chemical facies of water are distinguished in the alluvial aquifer: (1) a metal-rich acidic plume with gram per liter concentrations of metals (primarily iron) and pH values between 3 and 5 and (2) neutralized water with a pH greater than 5, low concentrations of metals, and high concentrations of sulfate and manganese. Historically, the acid plume has moved through the aquifer at an average velocity of 0.6 m/day, ten times slower than the average pore velocity of groundwater in the aquifer calculated using the Darcy equation. The rate of migration of the metal-rich plume is retarded by pH-dependent chemical reactions between acid water and the aquifer matrix. As acid water is neutralized by reaction with calcite, rising pH conditions in- crease the oxidation rate of iron and decrease its solubility resulting in the precipitation of ferric hydroxides. The formation of ferric hydroxides is a proton releasing reaction which main- tains acidic conditions. The acidit of the plume and the neutralization capacity of tKe aquifer are best assessed in terms of the iron content of the water and not the hydrogen ion activity computed from pH measurements. The parameters controlling plume migration are: (1) the calcite content of the aquifer (2) the iron acidity of plume water, and (3) the rates of acid neutralization and ferrous iron oxidation. A numerical solute transport and reaction model based on the concept of iron acidity effectively simulates the historical development of acidic conditions, predicts the behavior of the plume, and was used as a management tool to identify the most efficient and cost effective remedial strategy.

INTRODUCTION Some of the most famous and graphic environmental incidents have arisen from mineral extraction, including oil spills, the Reserve Mining asbestos tailings case, Kaiparowitts surface mining and coal combustion, and other environmental causes celebre. The remote location of much of the mining industry to some extent reduces the human health hazards from pollution, but often times the pristine locale in which mining is conducted provides a sharp contrast to the impacting industry. This prompts questions as to what the research literature says about the true costs and benefits of environmental compliance. We survey the state of this knowledge. Where possible, we discuss studies focused on mining and related industries, such as primary metals production. In many cases, how- ever, the studies pertain to the economy as a whole. For present purposes, the mining industry is defined as companies engaged in the production and refinement of minerals, including metals, fuels, and nonmetallics (e.g., phosphate, sand and gravel). There are several stages in mining, with environmental effects occuring at every stage. The exploration stage comprises the period from initial prospecting to the point where the deposit has been located and delineated in sufficient detail to permit development decisions to be made. Geophysical and geochemical surveys, diamond drilling programs, and exploratory stripping and excavation are activities that may be employed during this stage. Some forms of prospecting are relatively benign, al- though even airborne surveys and motor vehicles generate noise pollution. Roads and the passage of vehicles and equipment affect land surfaces and vegetation, and attract heavier backcountry use. Clearings, stream crossings, and borrow pits can lead to increased erosion and sedimentation of streams. Geological survey grids disrupt vegetation and appearance. Moreover, prospecting can involve the excavation and stripping of overburden, resulting in soil and vegetation disruption as well as in- creased sedimentation of streams and lakes. The effects of exploration are often temporary, and frequently less severe than for other activities. Nevertheless, exploration-related impacts vary with the intensity and type of exploration effort, and can be significant. During the development stage of mining, shafts are sunk, pits excavated, buildings erected, and transportation facilities established. Dust, noise, and other socioeconomic and environmental impacts are generated by the relatively large and sudden influx of people, equipment, and activity. Surface disturbance and solid waste are generated by development, and liquid wastes form when mines are dewatered. The extraction phase is associated with a variety of environmental impacts. These impacts may differ for surface and underground mines. In surface mining, surface disturbance is obviously a major consequence. Piles of overburden and waste accumulation mar land surfaces. Emphasis is placed on novel devices or improvements that offer better control or improved performance.

"Double Shield TBMs can be used in fast track projects for accelerated completion where there is limited information available on ground conditions and there are possibilities of encountering weak ground and shear zones. As such, the shielded TBMs are the primary choice of the machines in long tunnels, but face the possibility of entrapment in squeezing ground, which entails long delays and major risks. This paper examines the possibility of using ground improvement methods to increase ground strength, and thus, increase the capability of the machines to cope with squeezing ground conditions. In this study, 3D finite difference simulation of a shielded TBM in squeezing ground was performed to estimate the operational parameters including required thrust to get a machine out of an entrapment. This analysis was also used to evaluate the possibility of preventing machine jamming by the implementation of pre-excavation ground improvement to increase the strength of the ground. INTRODUCTION In order to face adverse tunneling conditions especially using a shielded TBM in squeezing ground, new shield designs, with extra thrust and torque, step shield geometry with reduced shield diameter from front to the back, and conical shape shields have been used. In addition, many of the new machines have the capability to implement ground improvement at distances up to 50 m ahead of the face in order to reinforce the ground and further increase in their chances to cope with squeezing ground conditions. While these features have been added to the machine, there has not been a thorough evaluation of their impact on improving the chances to avoid machine jamming in weak rocks at high depth, which is conducive to rapid convergence of the ground."

The restoration of surface mining landscapes requires the (re)creation of ecosystems. In Lusatia (eastern Germany), large-scale open-cast lignite mining operations generated spoil dumps widely consisting of acidified, phytotoxic substrates. Amelioration and rehabilitation measures have been developed and applied to these substrates since the 1950s. However, it is still not clear whether these approaches are sustainable. This paper reports on collaborative research work into the ecological potential of forest ecosystem development on typical minesites in the Lusatian lignite district. At first sight, pine stands on minesites along a chronosequence comprising about 35 years did not show differences when compared with stands on non-mined sites of the general region. Furthermore, with some modification, conceptual models for flora and fauna succession in forest stands on non-mined sites seem to be applicable, at least for the early stages of forest ecosystem development. For example, soil organism abundance and activity at minesites had already reached levels typical of non-mined sites after about 20-30 years. In contrast, mine soils are very different from non-mined soils of the test region. Chemically, mine soil development is dominated by processes originating from pyrite oxidation. Geogenic, i.e. lignitic, soil organic carbon was shown to substitute for some functions of pedogenic soil organic matter. Rooting was hampered but not completely impeded in strongly acidified soil compartments. Roots and mycorrhizae are apparently able to make use of the characteristic heterogeneity of young mine soils. Considering these recent results and the knowledge accumulated during more than 30 years of research on minesite rehabilitation internationally, it can be stated that minesite restoration might be used as an ideal case study for forest ecosystem development starting at "point zero" on "terra nova".

The “Teaching Kids” project is an educational initiative for young people and children from elementary schools. It is carried out by Mining, Geological, and Environmental Engineering students from the SME Student Chapter of the Universidad Nacional de Colombia, Medellin. The primary purpose of the Teaching Kids project is to share knowledge about geosciences and mineral resources in a didactic and attractive way, emphasizing the importance of identifying the use of minerals in daily life and responsible and sustainable mining in our society. Furthermore, this project aims to promote the importance of pursuing geoscience majors in the new generations and improve the mining industry’s public perception. Different methodologies related to early childhood education are implemented, such as gamification, in which the dynamics of games are adapted during the development of workshops to teach and learn in an active and motivated environment. Furthermore, the Montessori Method is used. It implements textbooks, sensory mineral boxes, and presentations to allow learning through experimentation itself (Montessori 2003). The implementation of this methodology has been successful; it has shown high engagement, participation, and retention of the basic concept of geoscience and mining.

"The objective of this work is to validate a methodology for spatially predicting the fracture intensity, defined as the average fracture area per unit volume. First, using the observations from drill holes, the fracture intensity is directly inferred at the support of drill-hole composites based on a Terzaghi correction. Subsequently, the composite values are interpolated to larger blocks. The methodology is tested on sets of simulated fracture networks, in which each fracture consists of a disc with a random diameter, random position and random orientation. For each of these simulated networks, one can calculate the actual fracture intensity within any region of space, based on geometric considerations. A regular sampling mesh is then defined to emulate a set of vertical drill holes and the proposed methodology is applied to predict the fracture intensity, both globally and locally. The actual and predicted fracture intensities are finally compared, showing that predictions are unbiased, insofar as, on average, the prediction error is always close to zero. Also, the error dispersion increases when the support of the prediction decreases, which is consistent with the well-known support effect. In practice, the proposed methodology allows predicting fracture intensity based exclusively on drill-hole information, without the need for simulating fracture networks in space, hence its interest. INTRODUCTION The characterization of fractures in rock masses is an important part in the evaluation of mechanical and hydraulic properties of rocks. Fractures have a large impact in disciplines such as reservoir engineering, safety of underground storage of CO2 or of nuclear waste, assessment of high-enthalpy geothermal installations, safety of mining exploitations, efficiency of in-situ leaching operations or of extraction by block-caving. As a rock mass property, fractures must be characterized in the three-dimensional space, whereas observations are limited to 1D (drill holes) and 2D (outcrops, drift walls), moreover very often to rather short stations, so that the available data are subject to geometric bias, truncation and censoring. Fracture characteristics includes the number of fracture sets and, for each set, the number, orientation, spacing, location, shape and size of the fractures must be inferred from data sampling. Some important parameters that are considered nearly in all models are fracture intensity and fracture size."

Stratabound uranium deposits consist generally of two comingled geologic and statistical populations. Barren zones, usually having radiometric assays too low for recording on digitized logs, comprise a large portion of a mineralized stratum. In between are mineralized zones; where the grades are distributed essentially lognormally. Estimation of open-pit ore reserves requires the prediction of the tonnages of selective mining units (the smallest mined volume which may be segregated as ore or waste) and their grades within panels of convenient size for open pit planning and economic analysis. The proportionate tonnage of mineralized selective mining units within each panel can be predicted by kriging an an indicator function assigned to each composite (1 if mineralized, 0 if barren). Next, using logarithms of mineralized assays, the conditional lognormal distribution of grades of mineralized selective mining units can be found. Using this distribution and the krigedestimate of the probability a selective mining unit is mineralized, the grade and tonnage of selective- mining units above any cutoff can be predicted. A case study illustrating this two- step procedure is presented for the Imouraren uranium deposit located in the Republic of Niger. Using cross validation, the estimation procedures were checked and were shown to be adequately accurate for mine planning purposes.

Magnetic, electromagnetic, and radiometric airborne survey data have been used in regional and local (drainage basin) scales. In a regional geoenvironmental assessment of the state of Montana, magnetic and radiometric data compiled from airborne surveys were used along with other digital geologic and geochemical data to prioritize mining districts for potential acid water generation. Probability ratio mapping was done in order to integrate the interpretation of many different digital data sets. On a more local scale, the Animas (CO) and Boulder Basin (MT) watersheds have been studied using helicopter geophysical surveys. The airborne geophysical surveys show many more structural features than the geologic maps. Combined interpretation of the geophysical data sets using the probability ratio method has resulted in identification of areas of alteration. Airborne radiometric data in the Boulder Basin area suggests that rocks with high potassium and thorium also have a high acid water buffering capacity.
