"Methane hydrate is of interest as an alternative energy resource in Japan and the R&D program has been ongoing for ten years (MH21: http://www.mh21japan.gr.jp/english/). Rare-earth element-rich deep-sea mud (REE Mud) is also of interest as an alternative resource in Japan and an exploration program has been launched in 2013.For methane recovery from the hydrate, a depressurization method pumps up water in a production well and has been successfully applied in field production tests (MH21: http://www.mh21japan.gr.jp/english/). However, micro-bubbles, which appear in the hydrate dissociation and water recovery processes may present an environmental issue. It may stick on clay and silt particles that accompany the recovered water, and may disturb settling of the particles in the water separation tank. For exploitation of REE Mud, an air-lift system has been proposed in the feasibility study (Abe et al., 2012). The same micro-bubble issue is expected during the air, water, and mud particle separation processes. In this research, the authors conducted a preliminary tank experiment for clarifying the effect of micro-bubbles on settling behavior of fine kaolinite particles. The behavior was continuously recorded by a still camera and the images were analyzed by the gray scale intensity. From the results the authors found a suspension effect for the settling of fine particles as the result of micro-bubbles. The effect should be studied in detail for preventing some serious environmental impacts during deep-sea mining."

Once every three years the eyes of the construction and mining industry?s turn to Munich, Germany for the bauma trade fair and exhibition. From April 19-25, Messe München International (MMI) will host the 29th edition of this massive show that, despite the recent recession and global financial struggles, has grown yet again. The show, which is completely booked, will take place on a record 555,000 m2 (5.9 million sq ft) of indoor and outdoor exhibition space at the New Munich Trade Fair Centre. More than 3,000 exhibitors are expected to make use of this event. To prepare for the show that highlights some of the largest and most impressive construction and mining equipment in the world, Messe München began working months in advance on getting the infrastructure on the open-air site ready, in time for the arrival of the gigantic machinery exhibits, which started to arrive in March. Part of the preparations include a new entrance at the northwest corner of the exhibition center that was built to regulate visitor flow better. This should help with bauma considering that in 2007 more than 500,000 visitors passed through the gates. ?Although in 2010 the construction machinery sector in many markets worldwide will be recovering only slowly from the recession, we are pleased to report that we are seeing strong demand for exhibition space. This shows that exhibitors regard participation in the world?s leading trade fair bauma as a must, although many are at present having to make cuts in their advertising and trade-fair budgets. We have been particularly surprised by the strong demand for space from exhibitors from markets like China, India and Turkey. The fair is fully booked and many more companies are on the waiting list,? said Eugen Egetenmeir, managing director of Messe München. More than 50 percent of the exhibitors at bauma 2010 come from countries outside of Germany. While the show?s primary focus is on the construction section, it is not as if the mining sector will be difficult to find. With some of the largest equipment in world on display in section C2 (Fig. 1), the mining industry is sure to be well-represented.

Mr. Garrett brings up several interesting points with respect to the proposed API specification for "nontreated bentonite." However, although not explicitly stated, these specifications are being written based strictly on bentonites from the Wyoming/South Dakota area. Other sodium bentonites may be suitable for use as drill mud but will be unacceptable since the specifications are designed for Wyoming bentonites. Regardless of the API's intent that its specifications are intended only as guidelines, they are generally adhered to on an international basis and, for practical purposes, might as well be chiseled in stone. Estes (1986) notes that the quality of bentonite available from Wyoming producers has steadily declined since the early 1960's. The plastic viscosity: yield point (PV:YP) ratio was included in the current API 13A specification primarily to prevent excessive polymer treatment of lower quality bentonites to make drill mud. However, with development of polymers designed to control YP, this specification cannot ensure that only high-quality bentonites are used for drill mud. Nor will the new specifications for untreated bentonites. Other sodium bentonites are available. Bentonite produced in southeast Oregon demonstrates superior performance characteristics without addition of polymer or other chemicals. However, the exceptionally high purity of these deposits leads to a relatively high YP:PV ratio since the naturally high YP probably results from the higher purity and smaller particle size of this bentonite (Rath, 1986 and personal communication). These bentonites typically have a smectite component exceeding 90% (Rath, 1985), compared with 70% to 75% smectite for typical Wyoming bentonites, as determined by X¬ray diffraction and tests for colloid content. As evident from the accompanying table, the untreated Oregon bentonite has excellent rheological properties, though different from Wyoming bentonites due to the high purity. Additionally, this bentonite reacts well with polymers typically used in the oil industry, making it eminently suitable for use in a low-solids mud system. The extremely low grit content, less that 0.5% on a 75 mm (200-mesh) wet sieve, greatly exceeds the standards set for Wyoming bentonite. Optimum rheological properties are obtained at a higher moisture content than Wyoming bentonites. At 10% moisture, API 13A maximum, the clay is overdried, again reflecting the high smectite content. Introduction The Energy Metals Corporation (EMC) holds numerous mineral properties in the northern portion of the Great Divide Basin including the JAB Property, one of several potential properties being planned for development as a satellite facility to the greater Antelope Uranium Project. A National Instrument 43-101 Technical Report has been completed for the JAB property. This report estimates total measured and indicated mineral resources on the property totaling 3,555,022 pounds U3O8 contained in 2,400,875 tons at an average grade of 0.073 % U3O8 at a .25 GT cutoff in accordance with CIM Standards on Mineral Resources and Reserves. The JAB Property is located in Sections 13, 14, 15, 16, 21, 22, and 23, Township 26 North, Range 94 West, approximately Latitude 42o 14’ North and Longitude 108o 00’ West (Figure 1, Location Map). This property consists of unpatented mining lode claims and Wyoming State mineral leases comprising approximately 2,100 acres.

Increasingly new interceptors or new Combined Sewer Overflow (CSO) projects require connections to existing tunnels. More often than not, the existing facilities are old, in poor or questionable conditions, without proper construction records or as-built drawings. Many cannot be easily inspected unless major construction effort provides flow by-pass for safe access. This paper provides general guidelines on how to approach the problem of assessing the condition of old tunnels, how to plan and design the connection with limited physical assessment, how to develop the scope of work for the bid documents and how to provide geotechnical guidelines and designs for the bid documents.

In this paper, a mixed integer linear programming (MILP) model for the short-term scheduling of open pit mines is formulated. The proposed model aims at sequencing the blocks extraction over multiple short-term periods. The model takes into account multiple processes, waste dumps, and multiple stockpiles. The short-term scheduler makes a decision on the period, destination, and route that ore and waste are supposed to take to minimize costs while meeting all the mining and processing constraints. The destinations of the extracted materials are also controlled by their rock types. A monthly short-term production scheduling case study of an iron ore deposit is carried out over a year to validate the model.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION Block caving is a distinct caving method applied mostly to large, massive, ore bodies because of its in¬herent low cost and high production capabilities. Areas of sufficient size are removed by undercutting so that the mass above will cave naturally. Drawing of the caved ore at the bottom of the ore column causes the caving action to continue upward until all of the ore above the undercut level is broken into sizes suitable for handling. When properly applied, block caving results in a lower mining cost per ton than any other under¬ground method. There are three distinct forms: (1) dividing the horizontal area into rectangular or preferably square or nearly square blocks, drawing evenly over the entire area to maintain an approximately horizontal plane of con¬tact between broken ore and caved capping; (2) divid¬ing the horizontal area into panels across the ore body, retreating by undercutting manageable areas from one end of the panel to the other and maintaining an in¬clined plane of contact between the broken ore and caved capping (thus the name panel caving); and (3) no division of horizontal area of the ore body into defi¬nite blocks or panels (this is termed mass caving). Undercutting may be from wall to wall, retreating from one end of the ore body to the other, maintaining an inclined plane of contact between the broken ore and caved capping. The total active caved area is deter¬mined by the size of block that will not produce undue stress on workings below the undercutting level and by total production requirements. This type of operation is also referred to as panel caving at some properties. SUITABLE ORE BODIES Block caving in its various forms is applicable to deposits of various shapes and ores of various strengths. Its success is governed by rigid requirements and limi¬tations. In unsuitable deposits or where improperly em¬ployed, the loss of ore may exceed that of any other mining method. Good planning, systematic work pro¬cedures, careful supervision, and good judgment con¬tribute to its success. Ore Characteristics Included as a necessary characteristic in an ore body suited to a successful block-caving operation is a proper fracture pattern. Ore hardness should be another gov¬erning factor, and the toughness or softness of the ore should be considered. There must be sufficient horizon¬tal area available for expansion of the undercut, if neces¬sary, to start the caving process. Large, massive, ore bodies usually meet these conditions. Veinlike deposits must be wide and dip rather steeply to conform to the block-caving limitations. The capping must be of such a nature as to cave when the underlying ore is being removed since the weight of the overburden aids in crushing the ore. The most favorable capping character¬istic is that it breaks into coarse pieces and resists attrition as the block is drawn. Soft capping, by breaking into fine pieces and sifting into the ore or channeling through the ore to the drawpoints, can seriously dilute the ore and hinder the extraction of clean ore from the blocks. Types of Ore In block caving, a fairly uniform distribution of val¬ues in the ore is necessary. Grade values may range from low grade to high grade, but most often the sys¬tem is applied to low-grade ores. Wide veins, thick beds, or massive deposits of homogeneous ore overlain by ground which will cave constitute suitable ore bodies. The ore must be such that it can be supported while blocks are being developed and undercut but breaks up readily when caved. Some applications include porphyry copper, disseminated molybdenite, hematite in the Lake Superior iron district, limonite deposits in northern Spain, the diamond mines of South Africa, asbestos and nickel in Canada, and massive magnetite in Pennsylvania. Size and Shape Outline of the ore body should be fairly regular, and the sides of the ore body should dip steeply. It may not be economical to mine small portions of ore extending into the walls of the deposit, and low-grade inclusions in the ore cannot be left unmined. Some dilution of the ore, as mining progresses, by low-grade or barren cap¬ping is inevitable and, unavoidably, some clean ore is left between drawpoints. Determining Cavability The use of rock mechanics is sometimes advantageous in helping to determine the cavability of an ore deposit. The US Bureau of Mines has information and testing ability which can assist in determining the cavability of ore types. Several competent consulting orga¬nizations knowledgeable in rock mechanics can also as¬sist in evaluating the cavability of an ore body. Some recent work has been done to better define the cavability index of various ore bodies; an example of how this was determined is discussed by McMahon and Kendrick (1969). The intensity of the fracture pattern is a critical parameter to be analyzed. The question to be answered is, "How intense must the fracture pattern be?" Table 1 is a tabulation of the size of rock fragments that appear at the drawpoint of various block-cave mines around the world. These are indicative of the fracture-pattern spac¬ing and, as can be seen, they vary substantially from the almost sandy material at the Mather mine to fairly sizable blocks at the Grace mine. Several sets of fractures are essential to promote good caving. Ideally, two vertical sets at nearly right angles to each other and a third set nearly horizontal are required to insure a good caving ore body. A study has been undertaken on two 1.12 m diameter industrial booster fans operating under different blade settings powered by a 1200 rpm motor at the Missouri University of Science and Technology. The fans total pressure varies up to 1kPa forcingup to 25 m3/s through the workings. A pressure-quantity survey has been conducted inby and outby the booster fans with different blade settings. The study uses a variable speed drive (VFD) to determine the effect of rotational frequency on the system. The pressure drop across the bulkheads has been monitored during the experiments. The fans were operated with various blade settings to determine the optimal scenario that maintains the maximum airflow quantity and the lowest power demand at a particular ventilation station. Five scenarios were conducted with different blade setting and mostly with two different speeds. The experimental results show that alteration of fans? speeds by use of a VFD unit can reduce power consumption while maintaining airflow requirements. With the flow rate forced through the mine by the surface fan the blade settings 4 and 5 were determined as possible alternative for the mine ventilation system. In scenario 4, the airflow at the particular ventilation station for a number of speeds is over 20m3/s. The power consumption at 1080 rpm was measured to be 20.1 kW compared to 25.5 kW at 1200 rpm. The operating cost would be significantly less at lower speeds. Scenario 5 is the alternative making use of both booster fans and the main fan in series that meets the minimum airflow requirement at the particular ventilation station along with minimum power consumption. Reducing both booster fans speeds to 1054 rpm results in power consumption of both together dropping to 11.8 kW. Therefore blade setting 5 using two booster fans was determined to be the optimal setting. Separately it was determined that the combination with use of only one booster fan, the West booster fan, running in series with the main fan is the overall optimal scenario. The power consumption of the West booster fan was calculated to be 8.8 kW at 860 rpm with the minimum airflow requirement being met. Computational fluid dynamics is used for analyzing three dimensional flow structures in time domain and calculating the corresponding unsteady pressure fluctuations. The sliding and dynamic mesh techniques were used to study the unsteady flow interaction arising due to the rotation of the fan blades. The numerical predictions of the variables in the form of velocity vectors and contour plots detailing the flow characteristics are then analyzed according to the known physical situation and existing experimental data.

Mechanical mining holds great promise for the mining industry. Realizing this promise depends on developing the tools needed to mechanize a mining operation with a reasonable expectation of success. Mechanical mining entered the 1990s with new machines, new operating methods and new ideas for the future. Mechanical mining can provide higher production, increase safety, reduce roof support requirements, create smoother openings for better ventilation, substitute continuous production for cyclical drill-and-blast procedures, and create opportunities for automatic and teleoperated control. The full promise of this important technology still lies ahead. Obstacles include: • Long-term production prediction: Mechanical systems have a high capital cost. Although recouped by lower operating costs, the tradeoffs are not always clear to mine operators. • Cutting tools for hard rock: Rock of more than 103.4 MPa (15,000 psi) cannot be cut by flexible mining machines. • Machine designs: Many machines cannot convert the required power into rock cutting capability. • Engineering: Better use of the machines in the mine is needed.

The University Link project extends Seattle?s light rail from downtown to University of Washington (UW). It includes 5.0 kilometers (3.15 miles) of twin-bored, 6.4 meters (21 feet) excavated diameter tunnels, and two cut-and-cover stations. The Capitol Hill Station (CHS) requires an excavation 170.7 meters (560 feet) long, 22.6 meters (74 feet) wide, and 22.9 meters (75 feet) deep. The University of Washington Station (UWS) requires an excavation of about 238.4 meters (782 feet) long, 21.3 meters (70 feet) wide, and 33.5 meters (110 feet) deep. The project is within the glacially diverse soils of the Puget Sound region, below groundwater. This paper highlights major station and tunnel design elements, including the approach to support of excavation at both station boxes, and the site staging requirements.

Many conventional structural analysis and design methods in current use are not appropriate for the mining industry. Two major reasons for this are that: • The economic life of a particular mine is limited, and • Much of the equipment and machinery used by the mining industry operates at relatively low speeds. Both of these factors can have significant cost implications if they are not properly accounted for during plant design. In particular, the often used practice of mitigating excessive vibration by adding mass to machinery supports is not only expensive but may worsen the vibration effects. Some of these problems, such as increased wear and tear, are not always easy to trace back to inappropriate design. This article focuses on vibration related issues and demonstrates that the mining sector has unique problems requiring unique solutions. Vibration: the basics Historic developments leading to current vibration design practices provide the key to why such practices are often inappropriate for the mining industry. To understand this, it is necessary to introduce some basic vibration theory. Consider a simply supported beam or foundation on which a vibrating machine is mounted. For analysis of the system's dynamic response, it may be viewed as a mass attached to a spring and a damper, such as the shock absorber of a car.

Haile Gold Mine is located near Kershaw, South Carolina, approximately 50 miles south of Charlotte, North Carolina. Gold was first discovered at the site in 1827, and the property has been through several operating periods since. The relatively low grade and refractory nature of the deposit has been a challenge for efficient processing since the start of mining on the property. Early processing techniques included gravity separation and barrel chlorination. The last operation employed heap leaching in 1985 through 1992. After being closed and reclaimed for over 20 years, the property is poised to re-open and produce once again. In this chapter of the Mine?s legacy, flotation and ultra-fine grinding will be employed to achieve economic extraction of gold and silver from the pyrite. This paper briefly reviews some of the mine?s history, the metallurgical testing, the flowsheet and discusses design considerations. South Coast Water District (District) operates the Beach Interceptor Sewer Tunnel (BIST) in South Laguna, Orange County, California between Mon-arch Beach and Aliso Beach (Figure 1). The 10,424-foot long BIST houses a 24-inch Techite gravity sewer pipeline critical to the District Sanitary Sewer Collection System that conveys 1 MGD of raw sewage to a wastewater treatment plant. The original tunnel was constructed in 1954 and the sewer line replaced in 1974. Periodic inspections by sewer pipeline maintenance crews have documented deterioration of specific intervals of the tunnel within the past few years (Sancon 2003). Rotting timber supports and rock falls in the tunnel as a result of the deterioration were endangering the sewer pipeline. A 50-foot section of the tunnel was determined to be in need of immediate repairs, which were carried out from January to August in 2007. This section was enlarged to a horseshoe shape and lined with shotcrete. The pipe was encased in concrete in the invert of the new enlarged cross section. Hatch Mott Mac-Donald (HMM) designed the emergency repairs, carried out an assessment of the rest of the tunnel alignment, and is currently developing a work plan for rehabilitating the entire tunnel.

Partners In Economic Reform, Inc., established a Polish-American Mine Center in Katowice, Poland, in 1996 to improve working conditions in the minerals industry. The program was based on the experience of mining companies, government, and labor in the United States, and was executed by a Coordinating Committee headed by the Center Director and Polish leaders from industry, State, labor, and academia. The cooperation among all parties has enabled safety and health issues to become part of industry restructuring with impressive initial reductions in coal mine fatalities. Existing work practices and attitudes of labor and management were assessed in coal mines throughout the country. Promotion, Rules, and Job and Task Analysis were identified as the areas requiring the most improvement, and are part of a post-graduate Safety Management program. Demonstration projects included measuring dust levels, using safety glasses, and promoting hazard awareness. Improved labor-management relations increased cooperation allowing for effective transfer of technology. Results can also be applied to improve the working environment of the manufacturing sector also undergoing restructuring.

The Spokane Research Laboratory of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health has demonstrated a prototype hydrogen-fueled mining vehicle as an alternative to diesel equipment in underground mines. Safety and control systems were added to allow a 70-kW rubber-tired hydrogen vehicle, originally developed by the U. S. Bureau of Mines and Hydrogen Consultants, Inc. (now Hydrogen Components, Inc., of Littleton, CO), to be tested. This work began in late 2000 and culminated with a Mine Safety and Health Administration fire safety review and field tests at the Stillwater Mine in Nye, MT, in 2004.

In response to the FY2008 Consolidated Appropriations Act (H.R. 2764; Public Law 110?161), the United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) issued the final Mandatory Reporting of Greenhouse Gases Rule (MRR). The rule, signed by the USEPA Administrator, Lisa Jackson, on September 22, 2009, requires reporting of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from large sources and suppliers in the United States, and is intended to collect accurate and timely emissions data to inform future policy decisions. The MRR will go into effect on January 1, 2010, and a report of the total emissions for calendar year 2010 will be due to the USEPA by March 31, 2011. Under the final MRR, suppliers of fossil fuels or industrial greenhouse gases, manufacturers of vehicles and engines, and certain facilities that emit 25,000 metric tons or more per year of GHG emissions are required to submit annual reports to the USEPA. The gases covered by the rule are carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), nitrous oxide (N2O), hydrofluorocarbons (HFC), perfluorocarbons (PFC), sulfur hexafluoride (SF6), and other fluorinated gases as outlined in Table A-1 of Subpart A of the MRR, which is also provided in Appendix A of this report.

Since 2007, a number of Multivariable Predictive Control (MPC) Applications have been implemented on SAG mills, among others, within the Kairos Mining Concentrator Automation Program using ?Profit Controller?? and other tools comprising the ?Profit Suite??. Along this journey, several interesting and challenging issues related to SAG mill operation and control have been faced, which are relevant to be shared with the Mineral Processing community. These advanced control applications have an operational objective whose goal is to increase marginal profit on the concentrator, together with increasing mill stability. In regard to this objective, the issues to be presented and described are in direct relationship with ?Profit Controller? features and the SAG role; they are also stated and linked to get the most of the mill. Some conclusions and findings are also presented, leading to recommended practices on how to use the controller. These findings have also lead us to decide further actions to be taken on new applications to deploy and also on devising and implementing some complementary components to increase robustness of the overall automation solution, as well as reducing the need for operator intervention.

Rock joint stiffness is not only a poorly known parameter, but also has no established laboratory measurement procedure. This paper presents methods used to determine the normal and shear stiffnesses of healed joints filled with vapor-altered minerals obtained from the Yucca Mountain site in Nevada. Results show that these joints behave linearly up to 85% of their loading history and are stiff with strengths very close to the strength of the intact rock. Factors that might have contributed to the linear behavior of these joints are discussed and areas requiring further investigation are provided. Joint normal stiffness ranges from 7.16 to 64.77 GPa/mm with an average value of 26.93 GPa/mm, while joint shear stiffness averages 11.41 GPa/mm and ranges from 3.09 to 28.41 GPa/mm. Young?s modulus of the vapor-altered joint infilling was calculated from the stiffness of the healed joint. Young?s modulus of the vapor-altered joint filling material averages 7.89 GPa and ranges from 2.15 to 19.43 GPa. Given the pervasive presence of such altered rock, usually in the form of sub-spheroidal 3-D pockets, this property should be of value in any numerical modeling attempting to describe the mechanical behavior of these tuff formations at the level of detail where inclusions might be a factor.

Preface The intention of this paper is to provide the reader with knowledge gained here at Memorial University regarding the practical use of the Bruker SDD x-ray detector for applications in image analysis. Included below are descriptions of the detector’s characteristics and observations regarding precautionary use. What is described below is relevant to the XFlash® model 3001 detector only, whereas the model 4010 is the new and currently available detector. The manufacturer has provided up-to-date information and a figure that presents very different behaviour relative to the characteristics described in this paper. That information and figure is also included here as an addendum (see figure 9). Introduction It has been more than two decades since an image analyzer has been proposed based on the unique imaging characteristics and spatial resolution provided by the scanning electron microscope (SEM) together with energy discriminating x-ray (EDX) acquisition (Reid et al, 1984). From the inception of technique, technology of the day has played the major role for making applications increasingly more practical. Computers, digital imaging, and softwares together with computer automation of modern digital SEMs have all played their part in advancing the technique to where it is today.
