THREE GENERAL REASONS exist for applying metallic coatings to steel: to improve its appearance, to resist corrosion, and to resist wear and abrasion. Coating steel with other metals to improve the appearance and to resist corrosion is an old practice; coating for resistance to wear is one of the newer development's' that has become of importance with the development of chromium plating. Coating for improvement in appearance is practically confined to electroplating. Metals like copper, nickel, silver, chromium, cadmium, zinc and tin, because of their pleasing color, are used for this purpose. But these metals are never quite corrosion-proof, except cadmium and zinc, when applied directly to steel. Improvement in color or appearance must be permanent and therefore corrosion-resistant and tarnish-proof. For this reason, with the exception of cadmium, zinc and tin, the above metals are used in combination to obtain appearance and resistance to corrosion. Resistance to tarnish is dependent on the property of the particular metal. Chromium, being nontarnishable, has made it possible to obtain combination coatings of copper, nickel and chromium, copper and chromium, or nickel and chromium, which improve the appearance and also resist corrosion and tarnish. Such coatings find a wide field in decorative work particularly the copper-nickel-chromium combinations, and when properly applied are very satisfactory.

W. 0. Philbrook (Cairiegie Institute of Technologyogv—Mr. Slatosky has presented an interesting and constructive paper that represents another step along the way of converting steelmaking from an art to a science. I am confident that his computer will be practical and successful and that with a very few months of experience it will provide a significantly better degree of control than his record of 65 pct of heats within range obtained with the slide-rule calculator . A paper such as this, with a lot of symbols and condensed mathematics, is difficult to comprehend quickly. Since I have had an opportunity to study it carefully, perhaps my evaluation of its validity and accomplishments will save time for others. Mr. Slatosky has correctly used standard principles of stoichiometry and heat balances, which are available to anybody, but he has also brought to them two original contributions: 1) He has developed from operating data some empirical relations for predicting the final FeO content of the slag (at 0.5 pct C end-point) as a function of slag basicity, lance height, and scrap, ore, and scale in the charge. This improves the accuracy of prediction of temperature or scrap requirement compared with assuming an arbitrary, constant FeO content at the end of each heat. There is no assurance yet that exactly the same relations will hold for other furnaces or practices, but similar correlations can be expected. 2) He has combined calculations that are ordinarily carried out laboriously as a number of individual steps into a single, simple linear equation that can readily be fed into a machine. This involved a tremendous amount of painstaking detail work as well as the imagination to see the possibility and work out the steps. While his particular Eqs. [3] and [6] are valid only for the furnace design, charge weight, and blowing time used at Aliquippa Works, only a few numerical values have to be changed to adapt it for other conditions. In order to arrive at a useable solution, Mr. Slatosky had to make some basic assumptions about the process that are similar to those used by others. He neglected variation in some process variables and assumed an arbitrary average value for waste gas analysis and temperature for want of more exact information at the present time. All of these judgments are clearly stated. In addition, some thermody-namic data presently available are not adequate for the job, notably in relation to heats of formation and sensible heat in slag, and some expedient has to be adopted to get around the difficulty. Other people might prefer slightly different judgments about these details and hence obtain somewhat different numerical solutions. This is not of serious importance, however, because the errors accumulate in the "heat loss" term and are largely self-compensating for a constant heat time. Although the extended Eq. l(a) in Appendix I was set up as a rate equation originally, for convenience in using an analogue computer as stated in the paper, the time dependence was removed by later mathematical manipulations and assumptions about the process. The final result is an integration of element and energy balances from initial to final states; this procedure is as legitimate here as in any other form of heat-balance calculation. The formal handling of stoichiometry and thermochemistry appears to be correct, and it is assumed that any arithmetical errors would have come to light in applying the calculations to furnace practice. Mr. Slatosky's approach is not necessarily unique, in that other people might start with apparently different equations or prefer another form of final equation for another type of computer. However, he has presented an accomplished result that appears to be a theoretically sound and practically useful way of applying scientific principles and rapid computation for better control of steelmaking. His success will undoubtedly encourage himself and others to improve on the mathematical model and its use as better informatioq becomes available. John F. Elliott (Massachusetts Institute of Teck-t2ology)-The last comment by Mr. Richards that a calculator is quite unnecessary for an L-D operation ?-equi??es a rebuttal. The L-D furnace is a very high capacity process which places a premium on close control. When one is making steel at rates between 100 and 200 tons per hr, one cannot afford the luxury of an extra 5 or 10 min at the end of a heat correcting for an error that should never have been made in the first place. Mr. Slatosky's paper is a very sound application of the simple principles of stoichiometry and the energy balance. It is a satisfactory and valuable start, but only the start of the development of methods of control for this process. An analysis of the process shows that it should be very suitable to control by a computer. This is especially the case when various grades of steel are to be made. In fact, it would seem that the organizations who are planning new and bigger installations of L-D vessels should consider carefully the advantages that would stem from computer control of a vessel with the operator present to do little more

MANY of the factors influencing the creep behavior of ferrous alloys have been investigated and reported upon in the literature, including such variables as grain size, steelmaking practice, nature and stability of the microstructure, and the effect of alloying elements in steels. However, with respect to the latter, the microstructures involved are usually heterogeneous and as a result the effect of the addition is related to its effects on the various phases present in the microstructure. In the instances where this structure consists of ferrite and carbide, the behavior of the alloy addition will be related to its action in strengthening ferrite and in opposing temperature softening of ferrite as well as coalescence of carbide. The present paper is the third in a series comprising a comprehensive review of investigations on the properties of iron binary alloys. 1.2 Its purpose is to describe the results of isolating one microstructural phase, namely ferrite, and studying its creep characteristics in both the unalloyed and alloyed conditions. This should aid in establishing to a large degree the importance of ferrite in the creep behavior of steels consisting of the previously mentioned ferrite-carbide aggregate. REVIEW OF PREVIOUS WORK In view of the fact that the present investigation deals only with the effects of silicon, manganese, chromium, molybdenum, nickel, and cobalt, and to a certain extent with the effects of carbon, the review of previous literature will be confined to these elements. Practically no references were encountered dealing with the influence of these elements on the creep characteristics of the isolated phase. However, various contributions have dealt with the creep behavior of low-carbon steels alloyed with the elements under consideration. A particularly concise review in this respect is given by Bullens (Battelle)3 and much of this material has been drawn upon. The definite improvement in creep resistance and high-temperature strength conferred by molybdenum is well known. Published suggestions by the A.S.M.E.4 permit of an increase of some 2000 to 5000 lb. per sq. in. in permissible design loads over a temperature range from 650° to 1000°F. as a consequence of additions of 0.40 to o.60 per cent of this element in carbon steels of the order of o.25 to o.35 per cent carbon content. Babcock and Wilcox Tube Co.5 has published data showing the pronounced increase in stress necessary to cause one per cent creep per 10,000 hr. when additions of 0.5 or 1 per cent molybdenum are made to a plain carbon steel. These data apply to temperatures over a range from 800° to 1000°F.

There are in this country some 20 or 30 societies for engineers and engineering scientists. Most of these organizations are autonomous, and there is little or no cooperation among them. Many do not touch the lives of our Institute members. However, during the course of the years several societies closely associated with the AIME have banded together to handle specific situations where cooperation was necessary. It is believed by many engineers that the functions of these cooperative societies should be analyzed and a plan set up to unify the engineering profession into an organization similar to the American Medical Association and the American Bar Association. The preliminary study of the AIME Committee for Inter-Engineering Society Cooperation has indicated that the following organizations bear upon the professional lives of our members. Some of these are federated groups, such as EJC and ECPD; others are individual-member participation groups, such as the Founder Societies and NSPE.

Reliable and detailed statistical data available for Kentucky, Ohio and West Virginia are the most meager and unsatisfactory of any of the producing states. Detailed histories and statistics are available for only a few pools. The antiquity of these pools, loose nomenclature, particularly where several names are applied to the same pool or various parts of the pool or a new namsed when the pool was rediscovered, made the collection of accurat historical and statistical data almost impossible. So many of the data reported are unreliable that a breakdown by pools or even by counties, until more accurate information is available, would lead to gross errors. Rather than perpetuate inaccuracies, we have endeavored to go to original sources wherever possible, sift these and provide data that may serve as an incentive and basis for future work. The necessity for accurate information is thoroughly recognized by the operators, particularly because of the effect of recent government regulations and request? for data in connection with the preparation of the various codes a pending legislation. Producers, both major operating companies and individuals, . freely given their time and assistance in the compilation of these data. Valuable information was obtained from tax records, rate cases, statistics published by the oil and gas publications and the Bureau of Mines. So many individuals cooperated in the preparation of these data that individual credit cannot be given. Undoubtedly many errors will be found. Some of the data are open to controversy, and many have been omitted in the hope that new information of a more reliable character may become available. Other omissions are due to an inability to contact the proper individuals, many of whom are no longer connected with this industry. Pennsylvania grade crude sold in 1933 for the lowest price since 1895. Gas production could not find sufficient new markets to fill the void left by industrial stagnation. In the gas industry, where the market price is fixed by contract, uncertainty persisted because of impending legislative action affecting both taxes and utility rates. By an extension of drilling activities in 1938, the Polish oil industry succeeded not only in maintaining production but even in increasing it slightly. This increase, however, was from present oil reserves and not due to the discovery of any new fields. Most of the new wells were drilled in the Jaslo district, particularly in the Lipinki-Libuszal oil field, because of the shallow depth of the producing sands. At the Boryslaw field the 12,332 meters drilled could not compensate for the steady drop in production. A drilling campaign similar to that of the previous year in the Stanislawow district resulted in a slight decline of production. A number of the new wells have been subsidized by the Fund for the Advancement of Drilling2 in Poland. As the present sums at the disposal of this fund are insufficient for a great exploration program, they are chiefly used for the maintenance of the actual production. New wells on known folds, but more than 1000 m. outside the present productive areas, are entitled to a subsidy. Applications for wildcats outside the known productive areas have not been received in 1938. Even when the Polish oil industry was prosperous, wildcatting was not frequent and in their present impoverished condition the oil companies are no longer able to bear such financial burdens. The only way to start a large-scale drilling campaign on the still existing promising areas seems to depend on the granting of new substantial subsidies from the Treasury. Such measures are being considered by the Polish Government. It has been suggested that a fund for wildcatting might be raised by a small increase in the price of benzine. An advance of one grosz per liter of benzine would raise, on present home consumption of 108,000 kilogram-tons, about 1.3 million zloty, an advance of 5 grosze more than 6 million zloty.3 This small increase in price would hardly be felt by the motor-car owners, as it would mean an extra expense of 80 to 400 zloty in a year.

The apparent activation energy, U, JOY plastic deformation of aluminium, copper, and gold single crystals and polycrystalline aluminum was found to he dependent upon surface condition. At low strains, the value for U for aluminum single crystals was 4200 cal per mole ; however, this value decreased to 920 cal per mole when the specimens were polished during the test at a rate of 50 X 10-5 win-1 The activated volume also was found to increase with the rate of metal removal. That the surface plays an important role in plastic-deformation processes has been adequately demonstrated.1-4 Of particular interest at this time are the observations4 that the creep rate of single crystals of fee metals is increased markedly when specimens are polished during the deformation process. These observations were interpreted in terms of a dislocation debris layer at the surface regions of the crystal. This layer, which appears to be a region containing a high concentration of dislocations or segments of dislocations, not only will impede the egress of dislocations on the primary slip system, but will also provide a barrier against which dislocations may pile up. By this means, a stress which opposes the motion of dislocations will be generated. It is considered that this stress must be taken into account in any theory which describes the plastic-deformation process. Although a detailed dislocation model cannot be given at this time, it may be stated that the stresses opposing the motion of dislocations arise from the dislocations in the debris layer, Ts, and ti due to the resistance to motion imposed by internal obstacles such as Lomer-Cottrell barriers, subgrain and grain boundaries, forest dislocations, and so forth, as well as the resistance due to the presence of jogs on dislocations and the interaction of the stress fields of dislocations, and so forth. In essence, we have added an additional term, ts, to the usual form of the equation T = Ta- Tb, where Tb is the back stress due to the various types of obstacles which impede the motion of dislocation. Accordingly, the net stress, t, acting on a dislocation may be written as where Ta is the applied shear stress. For deformation which occurs by a thermally activated process5,8 ?=Ae-u/kT = A e(u,-VT)/kT [2] and U = Uo- Vt PI where U = activation energy for plastic flow, y = shear strain rate, Uo = activated energy for plastic deformation in the absence of stress and depends upon the particular deformation process, V = activated volume, k = Boltzmann constant, T = temperature, OK, and A = frequency factor. From Eqs. [I] and [3], U = Uo- V(Ta - Ti - TS) [4] and it is seen that if Ts decreases, the activation energy, U, must decrease if V remains constant. However, as will be shown, V is a function of the surface conditions. In their work on aluminum, Lytton and coworkers7 reported that at low strains the activation energy was 3400 cal per mole and at high strains it was 28,000 cal per mole. The lower value was interpreted in terms of the energy necessary to overcome the Peierls force, while the higher value was associated with the energy necessary for dislocations to move by a cross-slip process. It will be shown that the lower activation energy is associated with the surface debris layer rather than with the Peierls force. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Single crystals having a nominal cross section of 1/8 in. and a 3-in. gage length were prepared by a modified Bridgman technique using a multiple-cavity graphite mold. The initial purity of the metals was 99.997, 99.999, and 99.999 pet for aluminum, copper, and gold, respectively. The orientation of the specimens is given in Fig. 1. At their last meeting, the Directors of the Institute passed the following resolution regarding Robert W. Hunt, who was president of the Institute in 1883 and 1906. This resolution was engrossed and presented to Captain Hunt at a dinner given to him in Chicago, December 9, on the occasion of his eightieth birthday. Resolution At that time it was announced that $5000 had been guaranteed as the nucleous of a fund, the income of which will be used for prizes to be awarded each year, under the supervision of the American Institute of Mining Engineers, for the best papers on iron and steel subjects. The Board of Directors of the American Institute of Mining Engineers extend to their distinguished colleague, Robert W. Hunt, a hearty greeting upon his eightieth birthday anniversary. They congratulate him upon his notable achievements as a pioneer in ,the manufacture of iron and steel, and his long and admirable service both as a practical director and as a wise critic and counselor in that art. They remember with gratitude his successful administration, for two separate periods, of the Presidency of the Institute, and they recall with pride the honor conferred upon it through the award to him of the John Fritz Gold Medal. Not least is their satisfaction in the retrospect of forty-four years of his membership in the Institute, with its unbroken record of loyal friendship acid delightful companionship; and they pray, that this record may be continued for happy years to come. In witness whereof, they have ordered this minute to be entered upon the records of the Board, and a copy duly attested to be sent to Captain Hunt.

The purpose of the present study was to arrive at a better understanding of the stress fields developed within drill bits under dynamic loading and the influence that these stress fields could have on the failure of the drill bits. Particular emphasis has been given to the influence that bit shape has on the establishment of highly localized, potentially destructive stress inhomogeneities within the bit. This paper covers one phase of a broad study involving three velocity regimes: impacts at very low velocities, 0 to 20 ft/sec, a velocity range in which dynamic effects are just beginning to be found; impacts at velocities ranging from 20 to several hundred ft/sec, arange commonly encountered in practical drilling operations; and impulsive loading through the detonation of explosives, a velocity range in which the dynamic effects are greatly exaggerated and made more identifiable. Specifically, fracturing which develops at the end of a cylindrical bar undergoing a shock produced by impact was experimentally investigated, the impacted area being the face of a truncated cone terminating the cylindrical bar. Fracture characteristics were looked at as a function of impact velocity, area of impacted face and cone angle — parameters of considerable importance in the design of drill bit. EXPERIMENTS The specimens were made of Plexiglas, which enabled the fracture pattern to be easily observed. In Plexiglas, the velocity of a longitudinal wave is about 8,700 ft/sec, and the velocity of the transverse wave about 4,200 ft/sec. The specimens were impacted by a steel cylinder whose lower face was parallel to the terminal face of the experimental bit, as shown in Fig. 1. The impacting mass was shifted up and down on two steel rods, dropping from a maximum height of 11 ft, with the velocity varied between 0 and 6.5 m/sec. The initial mass of the cylinder was 4.1 kg, which could be increased by steps up to 8.8 kg by addition of steel plates. The velocity of the steel cylinder was determined by using an electric circuit; as the cylinder dropped, it contacted two steel wires, the first one starting and the second one stopping an electronic counter. Two similar counters connected in parallel were used to corroborate each other. The velocity was checked at each drop as it had been observed to vary somewhat from drop to drop. The two contact wires were located just above the top of the specimen so as to give a value of the instantaneous velocity of the steel cylinder at impact. The distance between the wires was 40 ± 0.5 mm and the discrepancy between the counters was never more than 0.1 m/sec. Thus the velocity was known to within 3.25 per cent. This precision was sufficient with respect to the precision of the machining of the specimens. A very small lack of parallelism between the face of a specimen and that of the impacting hammer resulted in an oblique impact which required a much lower velocity to break the specimen. Twenty years ago, the northern Oquirrh Mountains overlooking Salt Lake City were bare. Heavy logging and overgrazing combined with erosion and uncontrolled forest fires had severely denuded the mountains by the turn of the century. As a final coup de grace, a copper smelter was built there in 1906, and for the next 50 years its sulfurous fumes killed off what little vegetation remained. In 1956, Paul Rokich, a biology student at the Univer¬sity of Utah, started to surreptitiously restore the mountains. For the next 17 years, Rokich devoted his spare time and money to replanting the Oquirrhs, with the result that several thousand acres of the mountains are green again, and animals have returned: deer, elk, and rabbits thrive among olive, maple, and fruit trees, wheat grass, and sunflowers.

From variation in Young's modulus and Vicker's hardness during GPl zone formation in A1-2 at. pct Cu the following was observed: 1) the presence of grain boundaries does not have any perceptible? effect on the aging reaction; 2) the modulus charge is orientation dependent; 3) the activation energy for zone growth is confirmed to be 11 * 1 kcal per mole; 4) reaging after reversion is preceded by an incubation time that varies with temperature. An analysis is applied to the present data and to data of other workers and kinetic laws dependent on the quenching rate are determined. In Al-base Cu alloys the decomposition product of a supersaturated solid solution at low temperatures (for example 25°C) and the first product at moderate temperatures (for example 150oC) are Guinier-Preston zones of the first kind (GPI).' The effect of fluid-flow rate and fluid viscosity on oil-water relative permeability determinations was studied using the "dynamic flow technique." In this work relative per-nleability curves were obtained for homogeneous small core .samples from several sandstorle outcrop form-utions. Radio-tracers were used for the determination of fluid saturation and for the detection of saturation gradients. Cobalt-60 in the form of cobaltous chloride was used as a water-phase tracer in some of the experiments. Iodine-131 in the form of iodobenzene and Mercury-20-3 in the form of mercury diphenyl were used as oil-phase tracers in other experiments. Flow rates for each phase were varied within a range of 2.5 to 140.6 ml/hr. Oil-phase vis-cosities under flowing condition,> were varied from 0.398 to 1.683 cp. The relative permbilities ob-tained were found to he solely a function of saturation and independent of flow rare, provided there was no .Saturation gradient induced in the core sample by "boundary effect." Even though equilibrium with re-sped to flowing conditions was obtained at the lower flow rates, where a saturation gradient exists, this equilibrium is of a "contingent"-type rather than the "steady-state" equi-librium implicit in the relative per-meability concept. The only effect of increasing the oil or non-wetting phase viscosity was to decrease the flow rate required for the elimina-tion of the boundary effect. Fairly good agreement between experimentally determined and calculated values of the boundary effect was obtained when the non-wet-ring oil phase was the only Flowing phase. INTRODUCTION In the characterization of reservoir rock, as well as in the solution of reservoir production problems, it is most desirable to have reliablc rela-tive permeability measurements for the rock and fluids of interest. Many techniques have been developed for the laboratory determination of the relative permeability of both large and small core samples. In varying degree, difficulties attend the use of all of the methods. Each of the methods requires the metered flow of fluids of known viscosity through the core sample under conditions wherein the pressure drop in the individual flowing phases can be measured or closely approximated. Since the relative permeability is a function of the saturation and distribution of the flowing fluids, some means of obtaining such information is also required. The laboratory determination of the relative permeability of a sample should give the same relative permeability saturation relationship that would exist if the sample were in place in the oil reservoir. The attainment of this objective is complicated by the fact that the use of small core samples for laboratory measurements is usually necessary. As a result, errors in measuring the relative permeability arise from boundary effects at either the fluid input or output ends of the sample; no significant boundary effect is anticipated at the sides of the sample normal to direction of fluid flow. At the input end of the sample a boundary effect exists if the flow fluids are not com- mingled as they would be in the reservoir. At the output end of the sample a boundary effect exists as a result of discontinuity of the capillary properties of the system. Here the flowing fluids leave the small flow channels and enter a collecting system having much enlarged flow channels. Thus, there is a tendency for the wetting phase to be retained by the core sample because of the attraction of the core sample for the wetting fluid. No reference is made to these boundary effects in either Darcy's equation or in the relative permeability concept. As a consequence the saturation effect peculiar to the input end of the core sample may cause an error in the effective permeability measurement, since some portion of the core sample must be utilized for commingling of the flow fluids. At the output portion of the core sample a saturation gradient or a saturation change along the axis of flow results. Since relative permeability is a function of fluid saturation, this saturation gradient may cause a variable permeability measurement, especially since extent and character of the saturation gradient can vary with fluid-flow rate. The most convenient method of minimizing the boundary effect, especially at the output end of the sample, is to flow the fluids of interest through the core sample at such high rates that the capillary forces arc insignificant as compared to the viscous forces involved in the fluid flow. Since recent work of a preliminary nature has indicated that fluid dispersion in the porous medium increases with the flow rate, the high flow minimizes the boundary effect at the input end of the core sample by enhancing the mixing of the fluids.

IN this day of steady progress in the mining industry, especially along mechanical lines, the question of whether to discard present equipment for that of a new type often engages the minds of many officials of mining companies. The rapid strides made from year to year sometimes cause this question to be brought up within a year after new equipment has been purchased and installed. It is a moot question whether a machine that has been purchased last year should be replaced by a new one put on the market this year. As I see it, the reasons for the replacement of present equipment may be summed up as follows: (1) because of increased safety; (2) because of legal regulations; (3) because of increased profits. I think all of us, as engineers, will endeavor to put in as safe equipment as it is possible to devise. The tendency of mining companies in that direction is very gratifying.

Vapor-solid diffusion couples were employed in a study of ternary diffusion in the single-phase copper-rich corner of the Cu-Zn-Mn system Interdiffusion coefficients were measured at three different compositions corresponding to the intersections of diffusion paths determined at 850°C. Intrinsic diffusion coefficients were determined at two compositions by the Philibert-Guy method. New relations between the various intrinsic diffusion coefficients are also presented. MOST of the investigations of ternary diffusion have been made with "sandwich" couples formed by welding together two homogeneous solid solutions with or without markers placed at the interface. With such couples Kirkaldy and his coworkers1,2 have determined interdiffusion coefficients which describe ternary diffusion in the substitutional alloy systems, Cu-Mn-A1 and Zn-Cu-Al. Guy and Leroy3 have reported intrinsic diffusion coefficients for Co-Ni-Cr alloys as a function of composition using the analysis of Philibert and Guy.4 The use of semi-infinite diffusion couples, for example, vapor-solid couples, where the diffusing species are supplied from a vapor source in contact with a diffusion disk, has so far been confined to studies of binary diffusion. Balluffi et a1.5,6 have successfully determined the interdiffusion as well as the intrinsic diffusion coefficients in several binary metallic systems employing vapor-solid couples with markers initially placed at the vapor-solid interface. They have also discussed the general advantages and limitations of such couples. Vapor-solid diffusion couples can successfully be employed in ternary diffusion studies. The importance of such couples in ternary diffusion lies in the fact that inert markers lie close to the vapor-solid interface, and the composition of the marker plane is virtually known before experimentation begins. Another minor advantage is that the method of Philibert and Guy4 may be used with three alloys instead of four. Lastly, the diffusion paths need not be S-shaped, as pointed out by Meijering7 for "sandwich" couples. The Cu-Zn-Mn system is convenient for ternary diffusion studies because of the large single-phase field in the copper-rich corner. The vapor pressure of zinc above such alloys is known, and X-ray measurements indicate that the molar volume is nearly constant over a wide range of compositions.8,9 It is the purpose of this paper a) to extend the analysis of Balluffi and seigle5 to permit an evaluation of interdiffusion coefficients in ternary vapor-solid couples, b) to use the method of Philibert and Guy to determine intrinsic diffusion coefficients with such couples, and c) to present experimental data on both interdiffusion and intrinsic diffusion coefficients for the Cu-Zn-Mn system at 850°C. INTERDIFFUSION IN TERNARY VAPOR-SOLID COUPLES The analysis of Balluffi and seigle5 is extended in this section to a vapor-solid couple where two solutes diffuse from a vapor source into a ternary solid solution. To take into account the expansion of the diffusion disk caused by the absorption of mass from the vapor phase, the total fluxes are expressed on the basis of a coordinate system that moves with the velocity of the vapor-solid interface; thus. where D3ij are the intrinsic diffusion coefficients,4 v(x, t) is the local Kirkendall velocity of mass flow, and F(t) is the negative velocity of the vapor-solid interface (x = 0). Both these velocities are based on a fixed coordinate system far removed from the diffusion zone. Using the continuity relations and Darken's method1' for a ternary system in which components 1 and 2 diffuse from the vapor phase into a solid of negligible vapor pressure, one obtains

EARLY in 1946 the Shen-Penn Production CO., a subsidiary of the Philadelphia and Reading Coal and Iron Co., was organized to operate the Shenan-doah Stripping, one of the largest open-pit anthracite mines in the world. This mine is located in the Western Middle Field near Shenandoah, Schuylkill County, Pa., and involves the removal of approximately 60,400,000 cu yd of overburden to permit the recovery of 9,200,000 gross tons of rough cleaned coal from an area 8000 ft long and 2700 ft wide, with a maximum depth of 400 ft. Operations began in August 1946, and within the next few years 31,811,-000 cu yd of overburden and 2,994,000 gross tons of rough cleaned coal had been removed. During the early days of open-pit mining operations, steam was the primary motive power. However, as the size of the equipment increased, so did the problems of fuel, water, labor, and maintenance. Because of its efficiency and convenience, electric power rapidly replaced steam. Later the modern diesel engine was developed, and today practically all stripping equipment is either electric, diesel-electric, or diesel-powered. In locations where electric power is not readily available or where operations are scattered over a large area, diesel power is favored. At Shenandoah operations are highly concentrated in a relatively small area, and this fact, coupled with the availability of ample electric energy, indicated the selection of electric-powered equipment. Since this was a new company, it was necessary to purchase every item, from the smallest tools to stripping shovels. Although the organization period was hampered by the postwar scarcity of materials, an excellent opportunity was afforded to set up a thoroughly modern plant. This paper will describe the power facilities, with particular emphasis on the more unusual features. The substation is a major item in a power distribution system, and a simple arrangement utilizing high quality equipment is an excellent investment. With this in mind, a 3000-kva unit type substation was selected and installed. This unit is made up of three sections, which are assembled simply by bolting together the various sections and connecting the power leads, see Fig. 1. The transformer proper, rated at 3000 kva, is oil-filled and nitrogen-sealed, having a 66,000-v Delta primary and 4160-v Wye secondary with a grounded neutral and 46-ohm ground resistor. The function of this resistor will be described later. Electrical energy is purchased from a public utility and is delivered to the main substation at 66,000 v over one or the other of two incoming lines. These lines terminate on a high voltage switching section on which high voltage fuses and Thyrite lightning arresters are installed. The outgoing feeder switching unit is made up of the following: 1—An auxiliary compartment consisting of potential and current transformers with necessary terminal blocks for connecting to power company metering equipment. 2—Another auxiliary compartment containing a control transformer, battery, and battery charger for the furnishing of power for tripping and reclosing of power circuit breakers. The assemblies in these auxiliary compartments are mounted on carriages that can be rolled in and out with ease. Potential transformers are readily accessible for inspection and fuse replacement. When withdrawn from the operating position they are completely de-energized and grounded. 3—Two feeder breaker compartments, each with a 1200-amp, 5000-v, solenoid-operated magneblast air circuit breaker, voltmeter, ammeter, overcurrent relays, and a ground relay. These power circuit breakers can be quickly and safely withdrawn or repaired. A built-in isolating mechanism is used for lowering the breaker to a transfer truck for repair or inspection or as a means of disconnecting the breaker from the source of power as an added precaution when working on power lines.
