Commencing with early experiences in iron ore beneficiation made at Beeshoek Mine, the paper follows through the process of extensive mineralogical and metallurgical investigations carried out during feasibility study. The paper will discuss the design process and logic followed over the last years, the challenges and decisions the design team faced in order to draw the conclusions that ultimately resulted in today’s value add approach at Assmang’s Khumani Operations.As integral part of the benefi ciation concept, a focus is set on the jigs, explaining the plant concepts, planned expansions and their contribution to the overall value add approach at the mine.The case study is intended to describe the outcomes of the design versus the actual achieved and the further value add projects to be implemented. As for future prospect, the incorporation of Wet High Intensity Magnetic Separation (WHIMS) demonstrates Assmang Khumani’s pursuit to maximise productivity and overall recovery.DMS was evaluated as an alternative to jigging within a comparative test work study, but in conclusion the option had to be excluded due to its inability to achieve the high density cut point required to achieve the sales specifi cations. In contrast, the investigation on producing an additional middlings fraction on the lumpy ore jigs prove to be an adequate option for further improvements of overall mass yield. With further liberation, a saleable product will be achieved by secondary beneficiation on Fines Jigs and WHIMS.Concluding, jigs are considered the most viable and cost effective benefi ciation process for off-grade ore +0.8 - 32 mm at Beeshoek as well as at Khumani, while WHIMS is the process under consideration for super fines recovery.

The Trident Gold Deposit is centred on the historical Higginsville Mining Centre, between the world class gold centres of St Ives (+15 Moz) and Norseman (+6.5 Moz) in Western AustraliaÆs productive eastern goldfields. It lies towards the southern end of the Norseman-Wiluna Greenstone belt in the Archaean Yilgarn Craton. The current in situ resource for Trident is estimated at 840 000 ounces, with production to date in excess of 500 000 ounces.Trident is hosted primarily within a thick, weakly differentiated gabbro with subordinate mafic and ultramafic lithologies and comprises a series of north-northeast trending, shallowly north plunging ore zones. The deposit comprises two main mineralisation styles; thin, lode-style, nuggety laminated quartz veins (Athena and Artemis) that formed along major shear zones primarily at the contacts between the various mafic and ultramafic lithologies; and large wallrock-hosted ore-zones comprising sigmoidal quartz tensional vein arrays and associated metasomatic wall rock alteration (eastern zone, western zone and Apollo) hosted exclusively within the gabbro.The thin laminated quartz vein lodes are important to the Trident Gold Deposits production profile as they constitute 33 per cent of the metal from only 14 per cent of the tonnes. The delineation, grade estimation and extraction of these lodes require a disproportionate amount of geological and engineering input due to the small scale variability in width, grade and direction. The Certificate in Mining Studies program at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada is a collaborative initiative between mining schools and industry to provide accessible, cost-effective, accredited continuing education and training, designed to address the future needs of the global mining community. Content is provided by industry specialists and delivered through an integration of online learning, short courses and interactive webcasts. Accreditation is provided by a network of mining schools. In 2011, the program will deliver close to 100 short courses and interactive webcasts and provide 24/7 access to more than 130 online courses in six mining streams, to participants from as far afield as Tanzania, Argentina and Mongolia. The program is proving adaptable to corporate and mine site engineer-in-training and graduate-development programs, as well as providing accessible professional development opportunities for individuals. It also provides opportunities for cross-training from other disciplines and integration with mining school curricula.

A model for column bioleaching is investigated to identify and understand aspects of bacteria in bioleaching applications, which have implications in heap bioleaching operations. The model is used to simulate scenarios that would otherwise be time consuming to perform experimentally. This study uses a model of bacterial transport and attachment/detachment to ore particles, with a bioleaching model for the depletion of a copper-sulfide, also accounting for liquid and gas flow and gas/liquid oxygen mass transfer. The model includes aspects such as oxygen and ferrous ion consumption, coupled with leaching of a copper-sulfide via the shrinking core model. The model is used to investigate how the rate of leaching is affected by the bacterial concentration in the columns, by the bacterial regeneration of the leaching oxidant ferric ions. The model is also used to assess the impact of oxygen limitation and inoculation method on the copper leaching. Some comparison of the model with experimental data will be shown.

A theoretical model has been developed to predict the probability of particle collection by air bubbles in a quiescent flotation pulp. The model considers the effects of both hydrodynamic and surface chemistry forces acting during the bubble-particle interaction. Hydrodynamic forces considered include the gravitational, buoyancy, streamline and film thinning resistance forces. The surface chemistry forces considered include the electrostatic, dispersion and hydrophobic forces. The hydrophobic force has been estimated from extended DLVO theory. The model is capable of predicting hydrodynamic and surface chemistry conditions under which bubble-particle adhesion is possible. Validity of the model has been verified experimentally.

A viable flow sheet of the sorption-flotation technology for gold recovery from low-grade ores and concentrates using powdered activated carbon modified by organic compounds as the sorbent-bearer has been developed. The powdered activated carbon, with high kinetic ability and sufficient specific area, was selected as the all-purpose gold cyanide complex-bearing sorbent which is active during flotation. To improve carbon adsorption capacity and to provide the required floatability its porous structure was filled with a quaternary ammonium compound which can extract gold cyanide complexes and render additional flotation properties to the carbon. To optimise the process and to simplify the layout, adsorption and flotation processes were carried out simultaneously in a mechanical flotation cell. The proposed technology was used for extended and pilot-plant tests of sorption-flotation gold recovery from 0.6 g/t Au final tailings and 2.0 g/t Au gravity tailings. The extended tests were carried out on Taseevskaya (Chita Region) flotation tailings, whereas pilot-plant tests were conducted on Kommunarovskaya (Krasnoyarsk Region) gravity tailings passing to cyanidation, followed by processing with filtration technology. Additional gold recovery from Taseevskaya final flotation tailings was 50.8 per cent. Gold recovery from Kommunarovskaya final gravity tailings was 92.5 per cent. Compared to the complete sludge process conventionally used at the plant, gold recovery was increased by 7.5 per cent due to lower gold losses in the liquid phase and conversion of the refractory non-cyanided metal into a carbon concentrate. This paper presents the experimental results of gold adsorption onto powdered activated carbon modified with quaternary ammonium compounds (sorbent-bearer) as well as sorbent-bearer flotation with various collectors from cyanide solutions and pulps.

Being inclined to metaphors, one could be forgiven to think that politicians act this verb and captain the Nation's ship into some definite course. In the case of at least the mineral resources industry, it seems that there are not many James Cook followers in our parliaments: Australia's approach to mineral and energy policy is often chaotic - witness the 1935 to 1961 ban on iron ore export-ing which prevented the development of a significant steel industry at time when the World was hungry for this metal, just to mention one amongst many other examples.The follies of Australia's mineral policies are well il-lustrated in the case of uranium mining. Although Australia had the Western World's largest economic reserves of uranium, it is onlythefifth producing nation and its uranium potential is largely unrealised. At the root of this situation are the interventionist attitudes and policies of successive Federal Governments which for more than four decades distorted the Investment decision and, in more recent times. discouraaed investment.

Obvious differences in mineral deposit types occurring in Outer Melanesia and Northern Chile can be related to the sub- marine-dominated nature of volcanism in the' former area and the subaerial-dominated nature in the latter area. Subtle variations in subvolcanic epithermal-porphyry ore systems between the two areas probably result from differing ore fluid compositions. Hydrother- mal convection cells in Outer Melanesia will be seawater-dominated, consequently rela- tively high salinities and chlorine contents will characterise the ore solutions. Trans- portation of metals as chloride complexes is likely and the ease of seawater sulphate reduction to sulphide in the ore systems will lead to widespread, sparse dissemination of sulphide minerals. Relatively low grade por- phyry copper deposits will typify these ore systems. In Northern Chile hydrothermal convection cells will usually be dominated by meteoric waters. Consequently ore fluid salinities are likely to be lower and chlorine will be less abundant. Under these circum- stances transport of ore metals as bisulphide complexes could be important. Boiling and loss of H2S gas from these fluids would lead to rapid precipitation of metals and higher grade deposits. Erosion rate is a very important factor in the preservation of ore deposits and this may be the major control on the richness of a metallogenic province. The abundance of mineral deposits in the El Salvador region of Northern Chile compared to Fiji is probably a function of the much lower rates of erosion in the former area.

Partitioning behaviour studies for -particles in the 250 to 1,000 micron size range at. the Curragh coal preparation plant are presented. Plant surveys were conducted to compare the partitioning efficiencies of dense medium cyclones and froth flotation. The aim was to assess the potential for improving yield of coal by directing more of the top size of flotation feed material to dense medium cyclones. ovel mass balancing and model fitting NI procedures were used. While flotation offers high yield of low ash particles smaller than 500 microns, dense medium cyclone rejection .of high ash particles larger than 250 microns is superior. These strengths of the two processes are turned to good advantage by the use or desliming sieve bends which tend to perform some density separation on the'size fractions of interest, directing lower ash material to froth flotation than to the dense medium cyclones.

The majority of the powerplants in India are fed with non-coking coals, with the coals dispatched from their respective mines via wagons loaded by a rapid loading system or pay loader. The usual top size of coal is 200 mm and sampling is carried out manually from wagons. The manual method of wagon top sampling of large size raw coal is not only difficult, but also violates some of the fundamental principles of sampling. As per sampling requirements, samples are to be drawn from the full depth of the wagons, which is impossible to be done manually. Since the ash distribution in the different size fractions is not homogeneous, the results from the samples, which do not reflect the true size distribution of the lot, are likely to be biased. More importantly, sample collection by shovel from the top is a function of human discretion and not governed by the equiprobability rule. In another case, the sample has been collected by a cross belt-type auto mechanical sampler for 200 mm size coal at one of the super thermal power stations. Test analysis shows that coal collected using a cross belt-type mechanical sampler also has significant deviations from stopped belt coal samples of 200 mm size due to size segregation. Studies carried out on wagon top sampling through specially designed experiments reveal some interesting features. The presence of bias in wagon top sampling is apparent when compared with the ‘stopped belt’ sample. In this paper, a comparative study between manual wagon top sampling/auto mechanical sampling with respect to stopped belt sampling has been conducted for coal of size 200 mm. The application of biogeochemical methods in mineral exploration in the semi-arid to and environment of Western Australia was investiga- ted in an area near Norseman. The reliability of these methods was evaluated by comparing trace element characteristics of rock, soil and plants in the vicinity of the Pioneer BB pros- pect. The prospect is located in the south- western part of the Pioneer Dome, where granite gneiss core is surrounded by a 'greenstone' sequence of ultrabasic, basic and sedimentary rocks. Nickel-iron sulphide mineralization occurs discontinuously along one of the basic- ultrabasic contacts. Analyses of unweathered and partly weath- ered rock from diamond drill cores show the ultrabasic rock to be highly variable with re- spect to nickel, copper, cobalt, zinc and manga- nese. Samples of weathered bedrock and over- lying soil were analysed both for total trace element contents and for the trace elements associated with secondary iron and manganese oxides. Approximately 30 per cent of the total nickel content of the weathered basic rock is associated with secondary iron and manganese oxides, compared to approximately 15 per cent in the weathered ultrabasic rock. The soil is partly transported but has a residual component sufficient to provide a reli- able indication of the underlying rock chemistry, although the trace element content of the soil is less variable than that of the rock. Important amounts of nickel, cobalt and, to a lesser extent, copper are apparently associated with secondary iron and manganese oxides in the soil.Melaleuca sheathiana (tea tree) has been used to study the relationship between soil and plant chemistry. No strong relationship between plant and rock type was observed. Analyses were made of leaves, twigs, wood, bark and roots, and all plant organs were found to have anomalous nickel and copper contents near the mineralized zone. Leaves were found to give the best contrast in the anomalous area and to show fewer erratic values than other organs. It is concluded that the uptake of trace elements by tea tree is low in the semi-arid to arid environment of Western Australia, but that analyses of the plants do reflect the presence of mineralization.

It is estimated that in less than a decade, high-grade iron ore reserves in South Africa will be depleted, leaving only low-grade ores with a dominant lithology of banded iron formation (BIF) hematite. BIF is a complex ore reserve as it is typically liberated below 1 mm, resulting in high energy costs. However, due to its abundance, its beneficiation potential should be evaluated to maximise recovery at an acceptable product grade. To develop a beneficiation program for BIF hematite, the first step is to determine the effect of two laboratory crushing techniques on mineralogical characteristics, specifically liberation and shape. For this study, the cone crusher and high pressure grinding rolls (HPGR) were used. The Electron MicroProbe Analysis (EMPA) and Mineral Liberation Analyser (MLA) were used to compare the mineralogical characteristics. The liberation characteristics for hematite are similar for both crushing techniques; however, HPGR preferentially liberates quartz. HPGR achieved 8– 12 per cent additional quartz liberation in the greater than 80 per cent and 100 per cent liberation classes respectively and specifically in +75 μm size range. Improved quartz liberation is associated with lower energy requirements for downstream milling and improved separation efficiencies for beneficiation units that operate in this size range. Both samples displayed similar shape characteristics; most particles were elongated smooth and the rest were elongated angular. Good hematite liberation is expected at grinds of 212 μm to 150 μm. Further consideration should be given to throughputs, energy efficiency and downstream equipment selection prior to selecting a crushing technique.

Zeolites are potential carriers of slow release fertilisers due to their unique phenomenon for salt occlusion. A comparative study was performed on the capacities of potassium nitrate (KNO3) occlusion in molten KNO3 treated synthetic 4A and 13X zeolite molecular sieves with main channel sizes of 0.41 x 0.41 nm and 0.74 x 0.74 nm respectively. The results show that in a laboratory setting, the treated zeolite 4A contained 13.57 per cent of occluded KNO3 and the treated zeolite 13X did not contain any. This was confirmed by the regular release of K+ and NO3- during washing both treated mixed samples with water and by their IR spectra and TG analysis. There are also changes of the relative intensities of peaks in X-ray diffractograms of both treated zeolite samples. K+ release from molten-KNO3 treated zeolites in deionised water and simulated soil solution shows that release of K+ from KNO3 occluded in zeolite 4A are slow and steady. Proper size fit between the channel size of zeolites pore and the size of K+-NO3- ion pair of KNO3 is the decisive factor for zeolites to occlude KNO3.

In 1999, the Mineral Development Centre of CVRD (CDM) acquired a flotation device referred to as Mini Pilot Plant (MPP), which is able to run continuous flotation tests with drill core samples. Since then this equipment has been used to define the flotation circuit and process conditions during the pre-feasibility phase of CVRDÆs copper sulfide projects. Until now, the MPP results had not been validated for an industrial flotation operation. The present work consists of a comparison and correlation of the results from a flotation MPP and an industrial plant. In order to make this comparison, an industrial plant was completely sampled and the feed ore was tested on bench scale and on a MPP. The metallurgical and mass balances of each test were used for the comparison.

The applicability of Bieniawski and Hoek-Brown empirical strength criteria has been assessed for different groups of coal and various types of intact rocks by using a vast number of published triaxial test data from various places. Analysis of individual data sets revealed that the traditional forms of the criteria do not have a perfect agreement with the data. A strong negative correlation has been observed between B in Bieniawski's criterion and m in Hoek and Brown's criterion with uniaxial compressive strength of materials. Both criteria have been modified and empirical relationships have been introduced for coal as follows:m = 62.903 - 34.213 (log pc) 0.9772B = 10.152 - 4.709 (log pc )0.8889Similar relationships have been developed for different rock types as well.A comparison between the applicability of each of the above approaches with the conventional criteria reveals a very significant advantage for new approaches and a supremacy for the Bieniawski criterion in all cases particularly in the case of coal.The modified Bieniawski criterion fits coal as well as different types of rocks with excellent accuracy.The modified Hoek-Brown criterion gives a good result for rocks but does not fit coal data quite well. In other words, Hoek-Brown criterion is not an suitable one for coal.

The objective of this paper is to examine some modern forms of auxiliary ventilation fabric ducting with streamline design fittings and the efficiency of construction practices. The most dynamic form of auxiliary ventilation is a moveable fan and ducting, which is easy to install and uses light weight fabric. The porous nature of some ducting construction results in leakage and loss of efficiency. Flexible fabric ducting is primarily associated with metalliferous mining and industrial material quarrying. Some applications are found in coal in stone/rock development and with use of dust scrubbers.Forcing auxiliary ventilation systems employing circular fabric ducting have been examined. Leakage of air from ducting is affected by ducting material and construction methodology (such as welded or sewn), quality of installation, number of joints, total length, pressure differences between the inside and outside and diameter. The best ducting system with welded construction can have up to four times less leakage as compared with some systems with sewn construction. It is also evident that the sewn type ducting will deliver less air to working faces and require more fan power, hence higher operating costs to run when connected to the same fan.A case study has also been undertaken to compare predicted operating costs of auxiliary ventilation systems connecting various types of ventilation duct fittings. The study also assesses the technical importance of streamline design with low aerodynamic resistance to reduce the shock losses of the duct fittings. It was found that the system connected with streamline designed fittings is able to provide some power cost savings and deliver more air compared with the system fitted with conventional fitting pieces.Using a ventilation ducting system with a lower leakage and frictional characteristic represents a sound solution to new challenges faced by the industry for increasing demand for better quantities and quality of air delivered to working faces; this is due to higher production schedules and stricter mine health and safety regulations within the Australian mining industry.CITATION:Wu, H W and Gillies, A D S, 2017. This paper presents the results of state parameter estimates in an active coal boiler ash storage facility using the most recent methods currently in use for cone penetrometer interpretation. State parameters estimates are also compared with the critical yield stress ratio approach, which is proposed as an additional liquefaction potential screening method. Recommendations are provided regarding additional in situ tests and laboratory tests that may be undertaken to improve the state parameter assessment and data produced for use in subsequent stability or liquefaction studies.

The dissolution of gold from various ore-bodies is discussed in terms of extraction rates and reagent consumptions during leaching. Gold dissolves slowly in cyanide but reagent consumptions are usually satisfactory. In almost all cases where excessive cyanide consumptions occur, similar high consumptions result with other lixiviants. Recovery of gold from cyanide solution is well established and comparatively simple technology.Gold dissolution in thiourea is faster than cyanide but significant consumptions of thiourea, due to both adsorption and oxidation, occur. Gold recovery from thiourea solutions is likely to be more difficult than from cyanide.Chlorination of gold is very fast in acidic conditions but excessive consumption of chlorine occurs for ores containing greater than 0.5% S. Reprecipitation of gold and handling of acidic chlorine solutions are both significant problems. The mechanism of gold reduction onto activated carbon creates difficulties in the carbon in pulp process for recovery of gold but means a simplification in the production of bullion from loaded carbon.

Diamonds have been known in Australia for many years, especially in association with alluvial gold and tin occurrences. Exploration for primary sources in the Kimberely area of Western Australia has been carried out since 1968, culminating in the discovery, in 1979, of the Argyle Kimberlite No 1 (AK1) kimberlite pipe. Various techniques have been used in the search for diamonds such as geologic interpretation, aerial photography and Landsat, soil geochenical techniques, geophysics, and stream sediment sampling. Stream sediment sampling, a method developed in South Africa, using the detection of indicator minerals derived from kimberlites in gravel samples, has had wide application and success in Australia. Nevertheless, although Australian diamond bearing kimberlite and lamproite rocks contain some of the classic indicator minerals, their concentrations are generally much lower than in South Africa and Russia. Despite this paucity of indicators, stream sediment sampling is still the best known and most commonly used method of diamond prospecting in Australia. Small samples are treated by hand but larger samples require the use of diamond pans, jigs or heavy media separation plants. Each of these methods has advantages and disadvantages. The final concentrate is passed over a grease table or subjected to x-ray sorting.
