The stability of access tunnels is one of the main engineering challenges in deep underground mine construction. Many underground hard rock mining operations are now reaching depths where the induced stresses are such that sudden and violent failure of the excavations can occur very soon after construction. The loading conditions on the installed ground support schemes are often underestimated by conventional engineering design methods. Therefore, the actual loading conditions often exceed the installed ground support capacity. This can result in failure of the excavations and, in extreme cases, potentially closure of mining operations amounting to hundreds of millions of dollars in lost production. More frequently, violent excavation instability at great depth causes operational delays, costly and unplanned rehabilitation, as well as risks to worker safety. In order to address this challenge, this paper briefly summarises a modern, innovative approach to the design and construction of mine development at great depth. The process follows seven main steps. The first step is to characterise the rock mass strength, structure and stress. The second step is a stability assessment, which identifies the plausible modes of excavation failure, based on the rock mass characterisation. The third step is the definition of an excavation geometry which is harmonic to the high stress conditions. The fourth step is to prepare a site-specific face destressing drill and blast design which will reduce the potential for rock mass instability during the development construction cycle. The fifth step is to accurately quantify the expected loading conditions on the installed ground support. The method of doing so is uniquely analytical and probabilistic. It is based on the natural mechanical relationships between rock strength, structure, induced stress and the physical characteristics of the instability, including its mass and ejection velocity. The sixth step of the design process is to specify a ground support scheme arrangement with sufficient strength and displacement capacity to exceed the rock mass demand by a safe margin. The final stage is to install the complete ground support scheme using mechanised technologies which minimise the exposure of the equipment operators to unsupported ground at the tunnel face.

The swelling process is an impor- tant problem causing damages to the structures in or on swelling rocks, both during construction and operating life. To understand swelling problem, a number of testing methods have been developed by many researchers. In these studies, the swelling parameters, in most cases, are derived from oedometer tests. The swelling parameters determined from oedometer type tests represent one-dimensional behaviour (one-dimensional swelling law) therefore, it is quite difficult to extrapolate the oedometer type test results to the three-dimensional in-situ conditions. To overcome these problems, a three-dimensional approach is suggested for clay bearing rocks. Results of triaxial swelling tests conducted on marl from Dodurga Lignite Coal Mine are presented. Triaxial swelling characteristics of the marl are presented and design approach for tunnels is described.

Size fractions of each composite sample were analysed for lead and zinc values and a comparison made of the behaviour of the lead, zinc and gangue minerals, size by size throughout the whole circuit. Analysis of the breakage behaviour using dynamic mathematical models gave the rates of breakage of each size fraction of each main component. Simulated grinding experiments shaved that the main grinding circuit had some reserve capacity. In the lead flotation circuit all lead values between 150 mesh (Tyler) and 5 ¦m had excellent flotation characteristics, and a major proportion had a high rate of flotation which was practically the same for all sizes. Increase in overall lead recovery would require improvement of the flotation behaviour of ultra-fine lead minerals. These were slav floating and were responsible for approximately half the lead losses in the final zinc concentrate and one thiro of the lead losses in the final tails. All sizes of zinc values between 150 mesh and 7 ¦m floated well and the performance of the zinc flotation circuit was mainly limited by the relatively poor flotation of the very fine zinc values. Approximately 60 per cent of the zinc lost to the final tails lay within the -7 ¦m fraction. The overall flotation conditions were conducive to very good selective flotation of the major proportion of the values and limitations in metallurgical performance were mainly due to the properties of the ultra-fines.

The Charters Towers 1:250 000 Gravity Data Set represents a new initiative of the Department of Resource Industries (DRI, formerly Queensland Department of Mines) to provide high quality regional gravity data over areas of the State that have high potential for new mineral discoveries. The Department has adopted a strategy to upgrade geophysical data to complement the ongoing Regional Geological Mapping Program (RGMP) of this Department and in areas where the data would be of most benefit to the mineral exploration industry. Part of this strategy is to ensure that these data are released within 6 months of data collection.The 1989 Charters Towers survey was completed as a joint project with the Bureau of Mineral Resources, Geology and Geophysics (BMR), and is the first regional geophysical data acquisition project undertaken by the DRI. Prior to this survey, the only gravity data in this area dates from the B MR regional surveys carried out between 1960 and 1967.

The Mathews et al (1981) stability graph was developed to provide guidance in the determination of stope sizes to control dilution in bulk mining of large orebodies. Longhole and sublevel open stoping (LHOS and SLOS) are the lower end in scale of underground mass mining with panel and block caving (PBC) at the higher end. Currently, the stability states of stopes in the stability graph are described qualitatively as stable, unstable or cave. The alternative quantitative option to the qualitative stability graph is the Equivalent Linear Overbreak Slough (ELOS) stability graph. The ELOS stability graph only applies to narrow vein orebodies. It is easy for the Mathews et al (1981) and the ELOS stability graphs to be applied outside the limits of their databases. What is currently referred to as ‘stable’ in the present stability graphs has diverse interpretations at different mines depending on their acceptable dilution values. In 2014, a research program was conceptually conceived at the UNSW Australia School of Mining Engineering to develop a quantitative dilution-based stability graph independent of orebody width to address some industry concerns on the use of the stability graphs. A dilution-based stability graph provides the mining engineer the flexibility to determine open stope sizes based on what dilution amounts are acceptable. The graph also unifies both the Mathews et al (1981) and ELOS stability graphs for wide and narrow vein orebodies, thus, eliminating their potential misapplications. To date, the concept is proven with case studies from metalliferous underground mining operations located across Australia. Electrostatic separation of non-conductive materials can be accomplished by triboelectric charging. The efficiency of convential separators becomes worse in the size range below about 100 ¦m. These problems are solved by developing a new double-drum-separator. The investigations have shown the possibility of separating very fine mineral mixtures (eg quartz/calcite) in a strong electric field after tribo-charging in a special dust-feeder. The paper reports about the influence of particle size and field intensity on the separation and deals furthermore with the problem of desagglomeration.

Magnetic field studies provide remote sensing of magnetisation distributions and a means to investigate moderately- to strongly-magnetised ore deposits that may be partially or totally buried. However, above-surface magnetic field surveys have limited capability to resolve the detail of magnetisation distributions because of the large separation between the magnetisation and the magnetic sensor. While some of this detail is available from magnetic susceptibility logging within boreholes or from magnetisation studies on recovered core, these measurements are limited to the exact trace of the boreholes. The large disconnect between ground or aeromagnetic surveys and highly-localised borehole sampling can cause problems in developing robust source models from magnetic survey data. The measurement of magnetic field in boreholes has the capacity to at least partially bridge that gap by measuring the magnetic field due to magnetisations proximal to, but not intersected by, the boreholes.CSIRO has developed the world’s first downhole magnetic tensor gradiometer. This instrument measures magnetic field gradients in all directions within a borehole. A prototype instrument has been built and tested as part of phase 1 of the Deep Exploration Technologies Cooperative Research Centre (DET CRC). The prototype performed well with magnetic pyrrhotite at the DET CRC test site in the Adelaide Hills and at Carpentaria’s Hawsons magnetite deposit south of Broken Hill. Further work is required to reduce the diameter of the probe so that it can operate in NQ holes (it is currently limited to HQ or wider) and to transform it to a continuous logging tool. The borehole tensor gradiometer can be used to investigate the continuity of magnetisation over a distance of several metres to tens of metres away from a borehole intersection and the structural dip of the magnetic body. It can be used to either replace or augment downhole magnetic susceptibility logging. Investors, government, media and special interest groups expect to see business environmental and social performance respond and deliver increasing corporate responsibility and sustainability.   Thorough interrogation of business performance using a multi-disciplinary due diligence approach presents a more sophisticated review and benefits beyond the traditional compliance/conformance 'audit' style assessment.   Using a due diligence approach allows assessment through a comprehensive lens which examines potential short- and long-term risks including sometimes less tangible environmental and social liabilities, and informs management, investors and regulators of broader business performance. This approach provides information in a form that business can measure performance in a repeatable and enterprise wide sense.   This paper provides an outline of the due diligence process applied in this way, drawing from lessons learnt and industry based experiences in the due diligence process and the benefits and tools that can  be applied in an environmental and social due diligence business performance assessment

Rio Tinto Alcan has undertaken feasibility level assessments into the expansion of its bauxite mining operation in an area south of the Embley River in far north Queensland. The project has the potential to extend their Weipa operations by approximately 40 years.The construction and operation of two additional mineral ore processing plants are proposed for the South of Embley project. Golder Associates was engaged to develop and conduct modelling assessments of potential sources of water supply required by mineral ore processing.Two models were developed using GoldSim: a dam yield model and a water balance model. GoldSim is a graphical object-oriented modelling environment with a capacity to carry out dynamic probabilistic simulations. Originally developed by Golder, GoldSim has been applied successfully in a decision support role to a range of mine water management operations.The dam yield model was used to provide estimates of reliability and volume of annual water supply of several potential surface water dams. This information was then used to determine a hierarchy of water supply options for processing plant operations. The water balance model dynamically simulated the water demands of the two production plants and the consequential response in water supply, with respect to the timing and discharges provided by the various source options.Use of the model provided a preliminary operational tool to assist with water supply management decisions. Water quality issues required a blending of water from separate sources and attention paid to scheduling to ensure water supply through the dry season. The model also helped identify risks to water supply in the event of underperformance of one or more water supply sources. This allowed the operational rules to be refined to minimise those risks.The dynamic and stochastic modelling approach provided a method for identification of water supply issues susceptible to seasonal climate variability.CITATION:Weeks, S W, Hart, M and Fergus, G, 2013. The breakage and flow characteristics of quartz, ground as a minor constituent with calcite in a continuous wet ball mill, have been determined by carefully controlled grinding tests.A mathematical model, combining the simple functions which describe these characteristics, has been used to predict both steady state and non steady state results.The calculated results are compared with experimental data.

The Tailings Leach Plant at Chingola employs a Leach/Solvent Extraction/Electro- winning process and contains the largest solvent extraction plant in the world, with design liquor flow rates of 55 m3/min. A pilot plant constructed to provide design data also indi- cated areas of uncertain operating and control performance and led to a decision to model the whole circuit to determine the overall dynamic behaviour and basic operating characteristics. Details of the plant flowsheet are given and the basic physical and chemical' equations required for the simulation defined. Each unit operation is considered separately and details of the mathematical models used for their simulation presented.

The lower orebody (LOB) at Chingola Divi- sion of Nchanga Consolidated Copper Mines Limited (NCCM) accounts for approximately 30 per cent of the total copper production for the company. The uniformity of the geology of the orebody lends itself readily to a computer based ore reserve calculation and accounting system. The mining units are physically defined such that a hierarchical type of com- puter file organisation can reflect the existing physical interdependencies. In 1972, a project team consisting of one representative from each of the mine planning, operational research, and computer services departments was formed to investigate and to define the technical mining requirements of the dynamic ore reserve system (DORS). The system was finally implemented in 1975ò

Environmental regulators are increasingly adopting risk-based approaches to protect aquatic ecosystems. The Australian and New Zealand Environment and Conservation Council (ANZECC) and the Agriculture and Resource Management Council of Australia and New Zealand (ARMCANZ) (2000) introduced a risk-based approach to water quality guidelines that use decision frameworks to adapt water quality guidelines to local environmental conditions. Environmental quality objectives are no longer a simple ‘pass or fail’ number such as restricting total suspended solids (TSS) concentration to a specified limit for a particular rainfall event. This approach ignores spatial and temporal variability and the complexity of aquatic ecosystems. The risk-based approach establishes levels where adverse effects may occur. If these objectives are not met, further risk-based investigation is undertaken to assess the potential impact to the ecosystem. Klohn Crippen Berger (KCB) developed a dynamic simulation to predict the variability of sediment discharges, which is applicable for risk-based impact assessment of aquatic ecosystems. The application of the methodology over the life of a mine site is illustrated using a proposed South Pacific mine.The site location is in extremely rugged terrain with a high annual rainfall of approximately 4.7 m. There were two major sediment ponds proposed to reduce sediment discharges. A sediment and hydrology model was developed in Goldsim to provide daily estimates of run-off flows and sediment concentrations. A modified algorithm based on the Australian water balance model was created and incorporated into the Goldsim model and calibrated using recorded field data.The sediment module was developed based on a Revised Universal Soil Loss Equation (RUSLE) assessment, an annual prediction of soil loss over a catchment. A land-use type erosion vector was developed for different land-use types and for each of the subcatchments, a subcatchment erodibility vector was calculated. This vector and the daily rainfall erosivity factor were used to estimate the daily soil loss. The estimated soil loss and the modelled run-off yielded predictions of daily sediment concentrations. Finally, a sediment settling module was used to predict the daily efficiency of the sediment ponds and hence discharged sediment concentrations.The results of this modelling form the first part of a quantitative risk-based assessment into suspended solids impacts. The second part is the assessment of the effects of these predicted TSS concentrations on aquatic ecology. As part of the feedback-loop required in a risk management framework, if the environmental quality objectives are not met then further management decisions and actions may be required to reduce the risks presented by suspended solids. This may include modifications to: the mine-development plan; construction techniques and scheduling; processing techniques; rehabilitation strategies; or hard-engineering solutions such as sediment basins or flocculation.The Goldsim water-balance model provides a quick and efficient method of testing potential remedial actions on predicted sediment loads and concentrations. In combination with a cost-benefit assessment, options for reducing sediment releases from the mine site can be effectively and quantitatively compared thereby providing mine operators with a basis for decision-making. Regulators can also be satisfied that potential impacts to aquatic ecology have been comprehensively assessed and the necessary management decisions have been initiated to limit risk to the environment.CITATION:Ind, M and Usher, B, ?2014. Ruapehu is an extremely active andesitic composite volcano, built in at least four cone- building episodes over the last 250 ka. The volcano was constructed by a variety of extrusive and subplinian, strombolian, phreatomagmatic and dome-related explosive eruptions from summit, flank, and satellite vents. The volcano may be subdivided into the cone itself, of volume 110 km3, and a surround- ing epiclastic ring plain of similar size. Four facies associations can be recognised at Ruapehu,-two each on the cone and on the ring plain. Neither cone nor ring plain provides a complete record of the history of the volcano. The cone is dominated by the products of extrusive eruption, as primary pyroclastic deposits are seldom preserved, being rapidly removed by erosion from the steep water- saturated and/or snow-covered flanks of the cone. The ring plain consists of the products of mostly explosive activity forming an alter- nation of primary pyroclastic fall deposits and material transported from the cone by lahars, floods and debris avalanches and then rapidly reworked in sediment-choked hyperconcentrated Streams.

A methodology for the fatigue life estimation of load haul dumpers, employed in underground platinum mines, has been developed and applied. This method entails the quantification of operating conditions by means of stress measurements. The measurements are then translated into a fatigue loading factor for a finite element model. The results of this analysis are then used to compare all the critical connections in the structure to detail categories in relevant fatigue codes, and predict a life in operating hours for the vehicle structure. The method was applied on a specific model and the results of this analysis were compared to actual failure occurrences with reasonable accuracy. It is intended that the methodology be embedded into performance specifications and purchasing contracts and that technology transfer to OEMs be achieved. Based on the experience of this project and other similar exercises it is estimated that structural life expectancies may be increased across a typical fleet of trackless mining vehicles (LHDs, drill rigs, utility vehicles, dump trucks) by at least 20 per cent.

A BRIEF account of the water-power potentialities of Tasmania is given, together with possible applications of the power commercially. A short history of the Waddamana development is then given, and the main works are described.WATER POWER POTENTIALITIESTasmania is an island of approximately 24,500 sq. miles area (exclusive of small islands). An area of 12,000 sq. miles is at an elevation of over 1000 ft. above sea-level, and of 2300 sq. miles at over 3000 ft. above sea-level. Average annual rainfall varies from' over 140 in. on West Coast to 20 in. on East Coast, and for the whole island averages 48.5 in. The total water-power available, based on conservative figures for run off and efficiency, is 6,000,000 b.h.p. Only a small percentage of this total will, under present conditions, and under likely conditions in the immediate future, be capable of being developed commercially.An extensive hydro-metric and water-power survey is at present being carried out in order to collect information concerning the most promising water-power schemes. Already 400,000 b.h.p. has been located in different proposals, and there is still a large area of very likely country along the West Coast which has not been investigated yet. Tasmania thus has very vast power potentialities, which, combined with good ports and communications and wonderful mineral and timber resources, should augur well for the establishment of the great key industries, particularly chemical and metallurgical.

The principles of geometry and trigonometry are so continuously used by mining engineers for the purpose of accurately and intelligibly recording their measurements, that the writer is prompted to lay the following cursory remarks upon mine surveying before the members of this Institution in the hope of eliciting a free interchange of opinion upon details of this interesting branch of the profession. He proposes to deal with surveying only so far as it concerns the mining engineer, not to intrude upon the domain of the professional surveyor, and, in this instance, to discuss more especially that which may be termed the mechanical, rather than the mathematical side of surveying.In the latter part of the eighteenth century and the beginning of the present one, the usual underground surveying equipment in the English metalliferous mines, consisted of a magnetic needle in a fiat square wooden box of about 9-inch sides, a two-foot rule, a long cord, aud a stool, upon which to place the needle and box. The operator took his bearing by sending his assistant with the end of the cord as far in a straight line as the length of the cord would admit.On its being drawn that he held its end in one hand and placed the side of the compass-box against it with the other, and noted the bearing thus found either by a book entry, or by ticking it off with a piece of chalk on the board the compass lay in. He then measured the cord with a two-foot rule. It is needles to say that with these appliances the accuracy of the results were open to question, and mining surveying was not unduly popular.In the present day, engineers have the advantage of using instruments brought to such a state of perfection, and of employing such an exact system of underground surveying, that inaccurate work must usually be attributed either to lack of care, or lack of ability in the operator.

A commercial wet scrubber was used in the SIU-Joy dust control laboratory to test several concepts for improving the dust control efficiency of a wet scrubber. The concepts tested included two filter-two-spray systems, hollow and full-cone sprays, horizontal and vertical sprays, different layer filters and addition of surfactant. The optimised scrubber configuration had water-only vertical sprays for pre-wetting coarse dust, and vertical surfactant-laden water sprays for wetting ultrafine particles. This scrubber configuration reduced dust concentrations from 250 mg/m3 to 1.8 mg/m3. In comparison, the conventional scrubber configuration in the feed provides an outlet dust concentration of 3 - 4 mg/m3 in field operation. Upon successful testing and optimisation of parameters in the laboratory, field demonstration of the concepts was conducted at an Illinois coal mine. The optimised scrubber configuration was tested in the field with good results in terms of improved visibility in the face area and reduced respirable and quartz dust concentrations. Additional modifications in the field involved relocation of the scrubber suction inlets from the bottom to the side and changing the water spray configuration on the miner head. These additional changes were based on a conceptualised spatial dust distribution profile in the face area. The results of these laboratory development and field demonstration studies are presented in this paper.
