THE structure of cast A1-Si alloys is altered profoundly by modifying agents. Sodium, in particular, reduces the size of the silicon particles in the eutectic and tends to change their shapes from plates to nearly rounded grains. This refinement is accompanied by a shift of the eutectic to higher silicon concentrations and lower temperatures. Similar effects can be attained by rapid solidification. Hypotheses advanced to explain modification have involved the formation of a ternary eutectic,1 the removal of oxides by fluxing,' and even a presumed allotropic transformation of silicon. Other hypotheses assume that the modifying agent causes an envelopment of the silicon particles by the aluminum-rich solid solution, but attribute this envelopment to different mechanisms. According to various explanations, the growth of the silicon particles is obstructed by an immiscible sodium-rich liquid," an adsorbed layer of sodium,' or a ternary compound;5 his obstruction has been conceived as purely mechanical or as a colloidal action.' It has also been proposed that sodium reduces the surface tension on the Al-Si interface, thus permitting the aluminum-rich solid to grow faster and to envelop the silicon particles.? Still other hypotheses stress undercooling and the attendant change in the rate of nucleation of silicon, but fail to ascribe any definite function to the sodium addition." '" Procedure High-purity alloys of aluminum and 3 or 7 pct Si were treated with modifying agents containing radioactive sodium tracers. The experiments were intended to investigate the partition of sodium between the primary aluminum-rich solution and the eutectic, and, if possible, to determine whether sodium is concentrated in or around the silicon particles in the eutectic. Radioactive sodium fluoride, alone or mixed with stable sodium chloride, was allowed to react with the alloy for 5 min immediately before solidification in the crucible. Modification could not be attained with additions of less than the equivalent of approximately 0.1 pct Na. Some alloys were not completely modified, but comparison of the structures of treated and untreated specimens indicated a very considerable reduction in particle size of the silicon in all of the former. A treated alloy is shown in Fig. 1. Radioactive sodium fluoride was prepared by bombardment with deuterons having an energy of 14 mev. This bombardment (totaling, for example, 6 microampere-hours in one run) produced radioactive Na24 (half-life 14.8 hr) by the reaction 11Na23 (d,p) 11Na24. The radioisotopes of fluorine also produced have short half-lives and were not detected. A half-life determination by counting confirmed that the measured activity was due to Na24. The distribution of the sodium in the solidified alloys was determined by an autoradiographic technique by which a suitable stripping film is attached to a very thin metallographic specimen. After exposure and development, this emulsion remains superimposed on the specimen and may be examined microscopically or photographed by reflected light. The emulsion of the autoradiograph can be correlated directly with the underlying surface by simple adjustment in focus. The details of this technique have been described elsewhere." Results Fig. 2 is a micrograph of the autoradiographic emulsion ("autoradiograph") lying directly above the area of eutectic in Fig. 1. First attempts to apply computers for the modeling, simulation and analysis of mineral processing unit operations date back to almost twenty years. Since then substantial efforts have been directed to the development of computer software for mineral processing. Current literature indicates considerable activities in the development of computer packages for interactive and batch simulation of individual unit operations and integrated plant operations. This paper presents a comprehensive review of various simulation systems that have been described in the literature along with a discussion of present trends in the development of mineral processing simulation software. Finally, the paper includes a detailed discussion of the desirable features in future simulation packages.

PURPOSE OF UPDATED ESTIMATE FOR MINERAL INVENTORY BLOCKS During the production stage of an open pit porphyry copper mine it was observed that the expected production grade, as determined from the block inventory estimates, often differed greatly from the head grade of ore delivered to the mill. It was determined that, for purposes of production scheduling and monthly forecasting, better in situ grade estimates for mining blocks were necessary. Because all of the bench blastholes were being sampled, and periodic holes were being drilled into the next underlying bench, much more sample data existed than was being used for estimating the grade of nearby mining blocks. It was reasoned that, by periodically updating the mineral inventory block file over the benches scheduled for mining in the next time period using all existing data, better estimates and forecasts for production grade could be made. BLASTHOLE SAMPLE DATA MANAGEMENT The collars of all blastholes in each mined bench were surveyed and assays run on the cuttings representing the full 12-m (40-ft) bench height. The blastholes range from about 5 to 6 m (16 to 19 ft) apart along the front of the bench as well as perpendicular to the front. Overbreakage often left larger spacings between successive blasts. Fig. 17-1 is a plan map of blastholes on a typical mine bench. All blasthole data were keypunched to a format resembling that of the 12-m (40-ft) composite assay data file as follows: [Collar Coordinates Compite Assoy Hole ID Northing East Elewotion Total Copper Oxide Copper] Because of the many blasthole samples available, and in order not to use excessive computer time for running kriged estimates for 30.5 X 30.5 X 12-m (100 X 100 X 40 ft) blocks adjacent to and beneath the mined area, the decision was made to average all the blastholes falling with each 15.2 X 15.2-m (50 X 50-ft) mined block, and use the mean value of the samples as a regionalized variable for purposes of assigning kriged estimates and estimation variance to adjacent unmined blocks. In other words, instead of using individual blasthole samples for making kriged estimates, the holes were grouped by blocks and assay values were averaged and assigned to the centroid of the holes within the block, which was then treated as a single regional variable for purposes of kriging. See Fig. 17-2. VARIOGRAM COMPUTATIONS AND KRlGlNG RESULTS With the many blasthole samples it was possible to compute directional and vertical experimental variograms for both sulfide and nonsulfide copper assays falling within the enriched mineral zone for the full 12-m (40-ft) sample support. Due to the close spaced drilling, excellent definition of the experimental variograms was possible, and the spherical model exhibited good fits. A three-dimensional kriging program was then run over the two or three mine benches involved in the inventory update, and estimated grades reassigned to all mining blocks falling within the range of the new blasthole assay data according to the anisotropisms of the deposit. Better confidence limits could then be assigned to scheduled mining blocks and better short- range forecasts made. An interactive kriging computer program was also applied for the purpose of determining the kriging variance or estimation of error for larger, irregular mining blocks representing the monthly production from a particular bench. The interactive program permitted the operator to enter the limits of the irregular block onto the screen of a cathode ray tube (CRT) as a series of points around the perimeter of individual gridded blocks making up the larger irregular block. The computer then was programmed to calculate the kriging variance of the larger block using all samples fall- ing within range. Thus the limits of estimated grade could be established at any confidence level. Fig. 17-3 illustrates the output from the interactive kriging program showing the sample points entering into the grade and kriging variance computations, and also the kriging coefficient assigned by the computer to each sample.

THE apparent dependency of the electrical characteristics of hexagonal crystalline selenium on microstructure has aroused much interest in microscopical studies of selenium. Microscopic observations on the crystallization of selenium have been made by Escoffery and Halperin,' P. H. Keck,' and other investigators. It is the purpose of this paper to discuss the microstructural changes observed on polished cross-sections of single layers of selenium after various heat treatments. Observations were also made on crystallization of the free-surface layer of these deposits. In general, all of the transformations studied were either transformations of the vitreous selenium to hexagonal selenium or micro-structural transformation of the hexagonal selenium itself. Procedure The selenium used in this work was obtained from the American Smelting and Refining Co. and was approximately 99.96 pct pure. An intentional impurity of 1 part per 2,000 of bromine was added to the material prior to evaporation. A thickness of approximately 0.002 in. of this selenium was vapor deposited on an aluminum base plate. The maximum plate temperature during the vacuum vapor deposition was 140°C. Mounting of the cross-sectional specimens for metallographic study could not be done in plastic mounting media, as is customary, since temperatures in excess of 50°C would cause unwanted transformations. Consequently, a simple clamp-type device was used to mount the specimens for preparation. All grinding operations were then done carefully by hand in order that the specimen not become heated during this operation. Wet polishing was done on the conventional metallographic polishing laps, using successively finer grinding powders. An extremely careful polish is necessary, since observation and micrography of the specimens are done in the unetched condition under polarized light. The two observations of crystallization made on the free surface of vitreous selenium deposits (Figs. 4 and 5) were made on surfaces which were perpendicular to the cross-sections studied. These free-surface layers were examined directly, i.e., no pre- vious metallographic preparation, as obtained from the vacuum vapor deposition. Microscopic Observations A study was made of polished cross-sections of the vitreous selenium as-deposited. It was noted that in all cases there was columnar crystallization adjacent to the base plate, which appeared to occur during the vacuum deposition process. This observation has also been made by Keck? It also was observed that vagrant spherulitic crystallization occurred in the vitreous selenium. The term "vagrant" is used, since these spherulitic grains appear to crystallize at random throughout the vitreous selenium during the vacuum deposition process. Columnar crystallization at the A1-Se interface and a typical spherulite observed in a polished cross-section of "as-deposited" vitreous selenium may be seen in Fig. 1. Cross-sectional samples of vitreous selenium studied after heat treating individual samples for 20 min in 10" steps from 80" to 220°C revealed that crystallization—in this case, columnar crystal growth —proceeds from the aluminum base plate to the surface of the specimen (Fig. 2). Crystallization was microscopically observed to be complete after the 130°C heat treatment. Visual examination of the free surface of the specimen after the 130 °C heat treatment revealed the readily recognizable grey appearance of the completely crystallized selenium, in corroboration of the microstructural observations. No microstructural transformations then appeared to take place between 130" and 190°C. At 190°C the beginning of recrystallization appeared and proceeded until the columnar grain structure had been completely transformed to equiaxed grains between 210" and 220°C (Fig. 3). Naturally, the grain size of the recrystallized grains at the lower temperatures (190" to 210°C) was smaller than is illustrated in Fig. 3. In addition, polished cross-sections of deposits heat treated at 140°C for 10 min to cause complete crystallization and, subsequently, heat treated in 10" steps from 80" to 220°C for 20 min were studied. As expected, no microstructural transformations took place until the beginning of recrystallization was observed at 190°C. A comparison with the previously studied specimens revealed that recrystallization proceeded almost identically in the two experiments although in the first case the deposits were vitreous prior to the series of heat treatments and in the second case they had been crystallized by a previous heat treatment. THIS paper is written primarily for those who are familiar with the processes mentioned but who desire a further insight into some of the fundamental principles. It does not give a complete description of the various practices employed in the working of aluminum and its alloys, but presents a few illustrations of the essential respects in which aluminum differs from other common metals, and emphasizes the controlling factors of the processes under consideration. HEAT TREATING Certain aluminum alloys are capable of having their mechanical properties greatly altered by a heat-treatment process. The degree of this improvement may be illustrated by some typical properties of duralumin (Table 1). It is essential that the material be in the wrought condition in order to obtain maximum heat-treatment effects. [ ] In the case of duralumin, the process consists of heating the metal to a prescribed temperature and then quenching it. Immediately after quenching, the material is relatively soft though not as soft as in the annealed state. If allowed to stand at room temperature, the material changes, increasing in hardness and strength without loss of elongation, but at the expense of the plasticity. This action is very rapid at first, gradually diminishing in intensity and to all practical purposes being completed in about four days. This process of hardening is termed

A study was made of indexed penetrations by a single dull bit tooth under statically applied loads into rock subjected to confining pressures from atmospheric to 5,000 p.si and atmospheric pore pressure. Experimental results obtained with a 45" wedge tooth over the above range of pressures are presented for two limestones and a sandstone, a variely of indexing distances and two degrees of tooth dullness. The optimum distance between successive bit-tooth penetrations required for maximum rock damage and chip formation decreases substantially with increa.sing confining pressure above the brittle-to-ductile transition pressure of a particular rock. However, the distance remains approximately constant for a variation in confining pressure below the transition pressure. At a given confining pressure, the bit-tooth force required lor chip formation is constant for indexing distances greater than optimum, but generally decreases linearly with decreasing indexing distance for distances less than optimum. The chip-formation force data obtained at confining pressures for which the chip-generation mechanism is macroscopic-ally of a pseudoplastic nature compare favorably with previous theoretical results for indexed dull hit-tooth penetrntion into an idealized, rigid, perfectly plastic rock. INTRODUCTION To study the cutting action of a roller-cone bit, the interaction of a penetrating bit tooth with craters formed in a rock surfacc by the passage of previous bit teeth must be considered. Current knowledge of the basic mechanics of bit tooth-rock intcract:on under simulated borehole environmental conditions has been extensively reviewed.',' Particularly of current interest are the effects of bit-tooth shape, distance between successive penetrations and differential pressure at the rock surface on the extent of the interaction. Pertinent to this paper are results of an experimental investigationb f the interaction between successive penetrations by sharp, wedge-shaped bit teeth. It was demonstrated that both bit-tooth angle and differential pressure influence the extent of rock damage between successive bit-tooth penetrations. Specifically, the optimum or minimum distance between successive penetrations required for maximum interact'on or chip generation tends to decrease with decreasing bit-tooth angle and increasing differential pressure. In addition, at differential pressures on the order of 2,000 psi for four va- rieties of limestones and sandstones, the macroscopic mechanism of chip formation exhibits a transition from brittle to ductile. In this paper, experimental consideration is given to successive or indexed penetrat ons by wedge-shaped bit teeth. Since pore pressure in a rock sample is maintained at atmospheric pressure, the differential pressure at the fluid-rock interface is equal to the confining pressure. The degrees of bit-tooth dullness include teeth with flat and round apexes (Fig. 1). Of primary concern in this paper are the bit-tooth forces required for chip formation, the macroscopic mechanism of chip formation and the minimum distance between successive penetrations, i.e., optimum indexing distance required for maximum rock damage, as functions of differential pressure. Of further interest is a comparison of actual bit-tooth chip formation forces at elevated differential pressures with calculated forces from previous theoretical results4 for indexed dull bit tooth penetration into a rigid-plastic rock. EXPERIMENTAL APPARATUS AND PROCEDURE The experimental apparatus consists of a pressure vessel equipped with a piston through the side of the vessel (Fig. 2). A single bit tooth inserted in the lower end of the piston is forced at a desired rate into the rock when the ram pressure chamber is pressurized. Electrical instrumentation incorporated into the apparatus yields a graphical plot of force on the piston as a function of bit-tooth penetration or displacement into the rock. Since the piston and ram assembly are in force equilibrium for a constant confining pressure in the main vessel, the fluid volume in the vessel remains constant during bit-tooth penetration. The anodic treatment of aluminum presents problems of scientific as well as of commercial interest.l-3 Of particular interest is the fact that, during the anodic oxidation process, the oxide continues to form at the metal-oxide interface under any oxide previously formed. This has led to speculation as to the mechanism involved in the formation of the relatively thick oxide coatings that are used commercially for decorative or protective purposes. Furthermore, the ability of certain types of oxide coatings to adsorb dyes and other substances has stimulated research to determine the actual structure of these adsorptive coatings. It has been found that anodic oxide coatings on aluminum are composed essentially of aluminum oxide. They are formed by the action of oxygen ions penetrating to the metal surface during the electrolytic oxidation treatment. These coatings can be formed in a number of different electrolytes, as for example, those which contain sulphuric acid, chromic acid, oxalic acid, or boric acid. These are the commonest and most useful electrolytes employed commercially. Except for certain specific conditions of formation, the coatings in general have been found to be amorphous alumina, as far as can be determined by X-ray or electron-diffraction methods. Anodic oxidation processes can be arranged in three rather general classes if they are grouped in relation to the solvent action of the electrolyte on the coating.4 In the first class, the electrolyte has little or no solvent action on the coating that is formed. In general, coatings produced under such circumstances are nonporous and non-adsorptive. In the second class, the electrolyte exerts an appreciable solvent action on the coating. These coatings are porous and adsorptive. Finally, for the third class, the electrolyte tends to dissolve the coating about as rapidly as it is formed. This action produces electrolytic brightening or anodic polishing of the aluminum surface and at most leaves only a very thin film of oxide. The nonporous and nonadsorptive type of oxide film is represented by the coatings that are formed when solutions of boric acid are employed as the electrolyte. It is especially significant that these impervious films are formed in electrolytes that exert little or no solvent action on the coating. Where a boric acid electrolyte is used, the coating tends to form rapidly, with the result that the flow of current is soon reduced to substantially zero. This indicates that the growth of the coating has stopped. As a rule, the thickness of the coating is roughly proportional to the voltage employed for formation and the coatings of this type are exceedingly thin. In an electrolyte of this type, the coating has a high resistance when the aluminum is made anode; consequently, any current that may flow (leakage current) is very

The modern flotation machine is the result of decades of adaptation to a changing environment. In response to falling ore grades, and rising demands, tonnages, and costs, attempts are now underway to expand machine capacity by about an order of magnitude, while at the same time maintaining metallurgical performance and if possible reducing power requirements per unit throughput. Empiricism and rule-of-thumb have guided flotation machine design and scale-up, and a current need is for the development of a fundamental understanding of the subject. Design features of current and some obsolete machines are discussed in an attempt to outline those principles of flotation machine design which are known, and to delineate topics needing investigation. Attempts are made to distinguish between essential machine features required by the physics of the process, those features resulting from speculative theories on the flotation mechanisms, and features which are essentially styling variations. Topics discussed include: flotation mechanisms; tank and impeller/ stator design and dimensions; impeller speed; aeration; power consumption; particle suspension and dispersion; capacity; correlation of design parameters and operating variables; scale-up and scale-down; materials flow; problems in machine design. Design details and operating data for several current machine families are provided in Appendices.

WALLACE E. PRATT, Wichita Falls, Tex. (written discussion *).-The age of the oil in the southern Oklahoma fields, Mr. Powers concludes, is Pennsylvanian, or in part, possibly, pre-Pennsylvanian. In a later paper,1 he recognizes the Ordovician age of the small production from the Bullhead A. Daney, No. 14, in the Healdton field. But nowhere does Mr. Powers admit the possibility of oil of Permian age in southern Oklahoma. Yet shallow oil in the adjacent north Texas fields. (Electra, Burkburnett, and Petrolia), which are generally conceded to be closely related to the fields of southern Oklahoma in geological aspect, may very well be of Permian age. Dr. Udden has already discussed this question,2 noting the organic nature of the limestone, outcropping near Electra, together with other evidence that organic material was present if not abundant, originally, in Permian rocks: The Permian rocks in north

CHARLES H. RICH, Conshohocken, Pa. (communication to the Secretary*).-Mr. Wysor has certainly covered his subject in the most thorough and able manner and his paper will no doubt result in enlarged effort toward the conservation of this important byproduct. Not all furnace burdens are as rich in alkalies as those noted by Mr. Wysor. In our own experience we have never gone into any extended examination of the materials entering the furnace burdens, but have made a number of determinations of the water-soluble alkalies of our flue and boiler dust and found maximum of about 4 1/2 per cent. K20-too small for profitable reclamation. We have, however, frequently encountered the smoky gas described by Mr. Wysor. Such gas carries heavy fume, and buds with a fitful flame difficult to maintain. So pronounced was the inhibitory effect of the fume that, in extreme cases, the flame of a lighted match was extinguished by the current of gas and it was found impossible to conduct calorimeter tests without preliminary washing of the gas. When the gas was led through a washer filled with distilled water and pieces of coke, the fume was absorbed and the gas burned without difficulty. Careful analyses conducted on the water solution from the washer showed cyanides in increasing amounts in proportion to the difficulty experienced in burning the gas. We, note Mr. Wysor's statement that he has never found evidence of cyanides in their gas, ascribing the difficulty of burning such gas to the presence of chlorides. Our determinations were conducted in such manner as to preclude possibility of interference by chlorine.

IRON oxide .(Fe0) plays an extremely important part in the manufacture of steel. In the open-hearth furnace and the Bessemer converter it is the chemically predominant compound and controls to a large extent both the operation of the furnaces and the composition and quality of their products. Almost all of the refining action is carried out through the medium of FeO, which oxidizes carbon, manganese, silicon, and phosphorus. At the end of any open-hearth or Bessemer heat the steel contains dissolved iron oxide, which must be wholly or partly eliminated. The type of deoxidation product depends on the amount of dissolved iron oxide and on the deoxidizer used. After the heat has been deoxidized and while it is being teemed, iron oxide diffuses from the ladle slag into the metal, causing losses of deoxidizer and increase in iron oxide content of the steel. It is generally believed that non-metallic inclusions are responsible for a great many failures of steel in service and for decreased yield of steel during rolling. The basis of most non-metallic inclusions is dissolved iron oxide. This investigation was undertaken in order to determine the amount of iron oxide that will dissolve in iron under various conditions. Steel-making slags are complex and it has been thought best to determine solubility under simple slags as a first step. The study is being continued under slags whose compositions approach those of operating. slags.

An elaborate series of experiments has been conducted during the past three years at Irvington, N. J., which has resulted in the perfection of a process for the manufacture of smokeless fuel from high-volatile coals, and for the recovery and refinement of the coal-tar products derived therefrom. These experiments have been financed by Messrs. Blair & Co., of New York, and were conducted under the direction of Charles H. Smith, a member of this Institute, and the inventor of the process. The low-temperature distillation of coal has interested investigators for many years. Sporadic attempts have been made to solve the mechanical problems, but until the Smith process was developed, they were not carried to conclusions of economic value. The present coal shortage and the increasing demand for smokeless fuels make this subject one of timely interest. DescRiption of Plant The following equipment was installed and operated during the experimental period: Four horizontal and two vertical units of commercial size for the low-temperature distillation of the coal; two vertical, two horizontal, and two inclined benches for distillation of the briquets at medium and higher temperatures; presses and auxiliary equipment necessary for making briquets; and a complete byproduct recovery and tar-refining plant. This commercial equipment is provided with gas and electric meters, pyrometers and other apparatus for recording accurately the results of all experiments. There is, in addition to the commercial equipment, a complete chemical laboratory with distillation and recovery apparatus, including facilities far refining and cracking the tar and measuring the yields and calorific value of the gas. This apparatus makes possible a study on a small scale, of the various problems involved in the process. Description of Process Mr. Smith's experiments have resulted in the production on a commercial scale of: 1. A fuel, called Carbocoal, which, for convenience in handling, is prepared in briquet form.

FOLLOWING the passage of resolutions by a num-ber of the western local sections, which have beer printed in previous issues, the Board of Directors appointed a committee consisting of Messrs. Reynders, DeGolyer, Taylor and Merica, to call on the Director of the Budget, and to bring these resolutions to his attention. In response to a request to the committee Mr. Reynders has addressed the following letter to General Lord. In response to a suggestion made in the course of the conference held between you and President DeGolyer of this Institute at Washington on Oct. 6, I present herewith a brief statement of the reasons that have led the mining engineers and metallurgists of this country to urge upon the Government a policy of increasing support from year to year to the United States Geological Survey and the Bureau of Mines. While these are not the only technical bureaus to which we look for data and guidance in our work of winning and rendering useful the mineral re-sources of the country, they are the ones on which we chiefly rely and the usefulness of which extends over all the industries which are based on mines and mining. In calling this matter to your attention and to that of the departments in which these bureaus are situated, I am acting on behalf of a special committee appointed by the Board of Directors and which includes men in close and intimate contact with the iron, coal, petroleum, metals and metallurgical industries; men well qualified by experience and position to voice the real feeling of these industries. The subject is not a new one to our Board, which has long kept a watchful eye on the work of the two bureaus as would be natural in that the American Institute of Mining Engineers, represents the largest group of technical men and executives and the one of most wide-spread interest in the American mineral industries. With 9000 members and. 27 local chapters scattered among the mining states, the Institute is in a peculiarly favorable position to know and to set out the feeling among mining men and metal-lurgists as to the proper scope of activities of these Federal bureaus, the quality of their work, and the gaps in knowl-edge that most need filling.

In reviewing the history of the metallurgy of zinc, I shall pass hastily over what is only of antiquarian interest. That has been excellently treated by Dr. Bernhard Neumann in "Die Metalle" (1904) and has been described briefly in my "Production and Properties of Zinc" (1902), in my "Lead and Zinc in the United States " (1908), and in other metallurgical works of more or less the same date. In this present monograph, I have it in mind to confine myself mainly to technical practice, especially to that of the last 75 years, prior to which period advance was slow and of no great moment. The ancients made brass by the cementation process, i.e., embedding copper in a mixture of calamine and carbon and heating, whereby zinc oxide was reduced and zinc was vaporized and combined with the copper. Zinc was isolated by some of the alchemists, who named it and knew something of its properties, but made no use of it. Long before then, however, zinc was produced in India. Later it was produced in southern China. Possibly the Chinese obtained their knowledge from India. The Chinese in remote places still produce small quantities of zinc. I have seen photographs of their furnaces; or pots, for they hardly deserve the dignity of being called furnaces. I imagine that they are the same that were used centuries ago, for I cannot conceive of anything more primitive. Anyway, it is certain that the idea of a commercial production of zinc in Europe was imported from the Orient, where the metal was known in commerce as Speauter and Spiauter, whence speltrum and finally our term spelter. Tutanego and Tuteneague are other old names. Dr. Isaac Lawson went to China about 1730, expressly to discover the method of its production. What connection there was between Isaac Lawson and John Champion we do not know, but the latter obtained in 1739 a patent for a process of distillation downward and at some time between 1740 and 1743 erected a works at Bristol and actually began the manufacture of spelter. A production of 200 tons per annum is mentioned. In about the year 1766, Rishop Watson visited the Champion works and saw the process in operation, which previously had been

THE Tom Reed Extension and Big Jim mines of United Eastern Mining Co. are situated in the Oatman district, Mohave County, Ariz., about 28 miles southwest of Kingman, the nearest railway point. Articles descriptive of the mine surface plant, mill construction, and plant operations have been written by Otto Wartenweiler1, the designing engineer; Wheeler 0. North,2 when he was assistant general manager for the company, and Earle M. Bagley, mill superintendent.3 The last article covers average costs for the full time the mill was operated. The geology of the mines is described by F. L. Ransome4 of the United States Geological Survey. Production was started in January,. 1917, and the known orebodies were exhausted in May, 1925, showing a life of seven years and five months. On account of the comparatively short life and the fact that stoping operations were confined to two orebodies, little experimenting was done with mining methods. The two orebodies were in what is generally called the Tom Reed-United Eastern vein, which occupies a fault fissure having a normal displacement of several hundred feet. Seven or eight very productive ore shoots were mined along this vein in a distance of 1 ½ miles, the two worked by the United Eastern being 1 mile apart. The maximum dimensions of the Tom Reed Extension ore shoot were height, 750. ft.; length, 950 ft.; thickness, 48 ft. The vein structure varied from a solid quartz-calcite filling to a series of parallel stringers separated by andesite. From this body, 511,976 tons of ore were mined. (Fig. 1.)

During the latter part of the Civil War an income tax was placed upon coal and the production of coal in the various collection districts during the life of this tax is shown in the tabulation that follows. The counties that include coal deposits are shown for each district. No record exists now of the production by counties, but it is calculated here on the basis of tax collected. The table, of course, does not include any territory not under the control of the northern armies, and not all of that in some cases.

A wire-feed mechanism has been employed to fabricute metal alloy film resistors to various sheet resistivities on oxidized silicon substrates. The effect of several thousand hours storage in air at elevated temperatures on the resistance and temperature coefficient of resistance is presented. Unprotected films of- sheet resistivity between 100 and 500 ohms per sq fabricated at 300°C substrate tenzperatures were unstable when stored at 150°Cfor extended periods. The higher sheet resistivity films exhibited the greatest instability; however, even the 100 ohms per sq films drijted excessively for device application. When stored at still higher temperatures, the normalized resistance increases to maximum, then decreases until a minimum value is obtained, then finally increases in resistance until open. The use of a protective overcoating of SiO has had considerable benejicial effects on the film stability, so that 250 ohms per sq films deposited on 300°C substrates are now stable after 1000 hr storage at 250°C and possess a temperature coefficient of resistance less than 200 ppm per C. The use of a low substrate temperature during depositon (100°C) enables the preparation oj resistors with very low tenperature coefficients of resistance (10 to 20 ppnl per 'C). However, these films are less stable than their higher substrate temperatuve counterparts. During extended storage, the resistance of the protected films always decreases with lower substrate films exhibiting larger normalized resistance decreases. This resistance decrease is accompanied by a linearly related increase in the temperature coefficient of resistance. The electrical behavior of these films may be explained by postulating That the structure of the films is in the transition region between thick continuous films and ultrathin island structure films so that the conductivity is the restlt of both electron scattering and tunneling-activated charge carrier creation between neighboring grains. The annealing behavior when thermally aged is the result of defect anneal, grain growth, and selective oxidation. TheRE is a considerable interest in thin metallic films for use as resistor elements in microelectronic circuits.1,2 These resistor films must be stable when exposed to elevated-temperature storage or operating ambient, possess low temperature coefficients of resistance (hereafter referred to as T.C.R.), and be of a high enough sheet resistivity to be useful. The resistivity and T.C.R. of a thin metallic film are determined by the structure and thickness of the film. Hence the stability of the film when exposed to stress would depend on the stability of the structure. The resistivity of a thin film is the result of the electrons' interaction with the lattice vibrations (electron-phonon scattering), scattering of electrons due to impurities, defects, and grain boundaries and specula reflection from the film surfaces.3' All of these effects serve to reduce the electron mean free path and result in a resistivity higher than the ideal bulk. In ultrathin films possessing essentially an island structure consisting of a planar array of aggregates separated by a few to a few tens of angstroms, conduction is dominated by a combination of tunneling and activated charge carrier reation. Thin films would be characterized by relatively low resistivity, positive T.C.R., and reasonable structure stability whereas ultrathin films possess unstable structures, negative T.C.R., and exhibit high resistivity. Feldman6 has investigated films intermediate between the two regions and postulates that the resistivity of a film in the transition region is composed of two linearly additive parts: that due to the resistance of the grains and that due to the gaps. The grain resistivity would represent the scattering of the conduction electrons by defects, surfaces, and phonon interaction while the gap term represents the tunneling contribution. For gold and platinum films, he found as the film structure becomes progressively less continuous, corresponding to thinner films, the absolute value of the T.C.R. becomes progressively smaller until negative values are observed with respective zero T.C.R.'s at about 35 and 150 ohm per sq, respectively. Recently the author7 investigated the behavior of a multicomponent alloy of nickel, chromium, and iron and found the T.C.R.'s of these films decrease with decreasing substrate temperature during deposition. The lower T.C.A. associated with lower substrate temperatures was attributed to an increased contribution to the total resistivity from the negatively temperature-dependent gap tunneling since it is well-known that thin films deposited on low-temperature substrates consist of a higher density of smaller grains than the same sheet resistivity films deposited on higher-temperature substrates. Under conditions of thermal anneal, the author found that, when various sheet resistivity films fabricated at 300°C substrate temperature are exposed to extended storage in air at 300°C, the thinner films increase in resistance until open, while the thicker films

THE volume of hydrogen released from electrolytic manganese at various temperatures and pressures was determined in a previous investigation1 as part of a study to determine the most practical procedure for removing the hydrogen from electrolytic manganese metal. No attempt was made to determine the absolute volume of gas in the metal at any temperature and pressure; the volume of gas released showed only the variation in solubility with temperature and pressure. The results were very similar to those obtained by Sieverts and Moritz.2 Both sets of data show a minimum solubility between 500° and 700°C., but they differ in certain respects; on cooling from 500°C., our results showed an increase in solubility of about 7 C.C. as compared with an increase of 34 C.C. per 100 grams shown by Sieverts. Furthermore, the transition temperatures, as indicated by sharp breaks in the solubility curves, did not agree well with Sieverts' data. This information was of secondary importance in the earlier investigations, and the solubility at low temperatures and the transition temperatures were subject to considerable error. There- fore, a subsequent investigation, reported in this paper, was made to measure the absolute solubility at temperatures from room temperature through the melting point and make more accurate observations of the transition temperatures. APPARATUS AND METHOD The apparatus and method were essentially the same as those described in the previous work,1 as shown in Fig, I. At high temperatures, the small tube containing the thermocouple in the sample container A frequently broke off, so for some of this work the thermocouple was placed outside the sample container and protected by a quartz tube of about the same wall thickness as the sample container. No significant difference was found in the transition temperatures obtained in the two ways. The automatic temperature controller was used in these tests in the regions where there was little change in solubility with temperature. In the neighborhood of the transition points a continuously variable autotransformer was used instead of the automatic controller, and the power input to the furnace was adjusted so that the temperature increased or decreased at a very slow, uniform rate through the transition range. This procedure was followed because the temperature oscillations produced by the controller were too great compared with the transition range, and the transition points determined under such conditions were less accurate.
